Speakers pitch ideas for low-cost housing Symposium brings together several stakeholder groups BY CHRIS TRABER
ctraber@yrmg.com
Thousands of, basic, no-frill homes constructed by non-profit developers on donated land without any government financial support and owned by their residents, could be a viable solution to the lack of affordable housing in York Region. With a multi-year wait list for low-cost shelter in the region, it’s time to turn talk into action and deliver creative resolutions, presenters at the York Region Housing Symposium said Thursday at the Richmond Hill Centre For The Performing Arts. Hosted by the region’s human services planning board, whose membership includes representatives from York’s hospitals, school boards, government, social services and police department, the forum left board co-chairperson and Newmarket Regional Councillor John Taylor enthused. “There was good discussion and energy. People are excited about the innovative solutions to See MODEST, page 8.

Big developments on meeting agenda BY DAVID FLEISCHER
dfleischer@yrmg.com
After more than two years of planning and debate, the real work of developing Aurora’s last major greenfield site is set to begin. Wednesday night’s planning committee meeting at town hall gives residents a chance to hear about the applications for developing the so-called 2C lands, straddling Leslie Street from Wellington Street to north of St. John’s Sideroad. In September, the town won an Ontario Municipal Board hearing ensuring residential development takes place west of Leslie, saving the east for employment uses.

Robertson named for WWI British PM BY AMANDA PERSICO
apersico@yrmg.com
Come 11 p.m., you can find Lloyd Robertson getting ready for bed. The Newmarket resident, unlike the more famous man with the same name, never had to get ready to read the evening news. The former news anchor ended his broadcast with his 35-year-old tag line, “That’s the kind of day it’s been”. Newmarket’s Mr. Robertson also has a tag line he uses when being introduced to someone new or when making a
dinner reservation. “No, not the famous one,” he often says or, “No, not that one.” While growing up in Alberta, Mr. Robertson was the only Lloyd in town. It wasn’t until he was in elementary school that he learned of the Canadian icon who shared his name. “We were watching a movie in class and the credits rolled,” he said. “It was narrated by Lloyd Robertson. Everyone said, ‘Hey, that’s you’.” He didn’t hear that comment again until he moved to Ontario, but he got a break after
another relocation. “I was in Minnesota for six years,” he said. “That was a relief. “People down there kept asking me why it was such a big deal. I told them it was like calling me Walter Cronkite.” Sharing his name with a famous Canadian voice was not his parents’ intention, he said. Instead, his father wanted to name his sons after David Lloyd George, the British prime minister during the First World War. Mr. Robertson’s father’s name is George and one of his brothers’ name is David. “(David Lloyd George) was a
hero of my father’s,” Mr. Robertson, a history buff, said. “I guess I got the history bug.” However, the historical reference isn’t apparent when Mr. Robertson is introduced to someone new. “I always get, ‘Just like the broadcaster,’” he said. “And that’s followed by, ‘You must get that a lot.’ But that doesn’t stop them from saying it. It gets a little old and irritating, but you live with it.” Getting a reaction out of someone is his way of breaking the ice. “I don’t hate sharing the name,” he said. “He is a nice celebrity to be attached to.”

Salvation Army grows with Aurora By Chris Traber
ctraber@yrmg.com
The Salvation Army Central York Region, providing thousands of vulnerable residents with food, clothing, shelter, advocacy and social services each year, will soon have a new $8.5-million home in Aurora. Maj. Brian Bishop updated the York Region community and health services committee on Phase 1 of the 25,000-square-foot administrative and community centre, set on 5.72 acres on Leslie Street, north of Wellington Street. With construction anticipated to begin later this summer on the land purchased in 2006, the initial phase is scheduled to open in a year. The second, 7,000-sq.-ft. phase will feature a multi-purpose 600-person auditorium. When completed, the facility will house about eight full-time staff and hundreds of volunteers, Mr. Bishop said. The needs of the community are growing and the need for a larger facility to continue serving residents has grown right along with it, he said. The multi-storey facility will have a full gymnasium, offices, youth centre and meeting spaces. The Salvation Army’s public $1.5-million capital campaign is on track, with $1.1 million raised to date, the committee heard. Lead campaign donors include Brookfield Homes, TACC Developments and Newmarket Hydro. Corporate contributions have gone toward facility naming rights. As such, when the facility opens, it will feature the Magna Gym and Tim Hortons kitchen.

Additional funding has been provided by the National Salvation Army, which gave $1 million. A private citizen legacy gift represented another $1 million. To help bankroll the building, the organization’s existing Newmarket property has been sold. The balance will come from members and the community, Mr. Bishop said. The Salvation Army centre will be a community centre, he added. “It’s a lush property with trees and ponds,” he said. “It will promote health and wellness in our community.” Mr. Bishop and homelessness prevention program co-ordinator Jane Haslam also took the opportunity to apprise the committee on the Salvation Army’s tradition of social services in Canada and the region. Serving 400 communities for 125 years as the largest non-government social service organization in Canada, The Salvation Army is more than its high-profile Christmas Kettle campaign, they said. “Our branding is well known, but what we do is not,” he said, adding the organization offers a plethora of services, including housing and poverty reduction, youth support, counselling and addictions and recovery help. Most are offered in partnership with other social service agencies. “We are not here to compete with other agencies,” Mr. Bishop said. The duo delivered five key messages, explaining the Salvation Army’s mission is to be proactive, not reactive, to social issues, to empower the community, to see what others don’t and to address hidden, prevalent and emerging needs.

Don’t be afraid to use turn signals
MP Brown sending mixed message
I’ve noticed cars of all kinds don’t seem to have turn signals. Sedans, pick-up trucks, sports cars, hybrids and even the makers of some police cars and school buses all seem to be missing this piece of “optional” equipment. Back in the day, driver’s education courses included instructions on how to use turn signals. Instructors used to talk about the importance of letting other vehicles know your intentions for common courtesy and even safety. I realize sometimes there’s a good reason for not using turn signals, such as when you’re on the phone or trying to eat that burrito and drink your pop, while changing the radio station. No one could expect you to use one then. Funny thing, my car came with turn signals and I didn’t even ask for them. Must have been part of a package.
I just received, in my mail, one of those unsolicited political ads from Newmarket-Aurora MP Lois Brown with a Canada Day message. In it, Ms Brown says we should be pleased with our image as defenders of rights, supporters of diversity, advocates for freedom, democracy and the rule of law and protectors of nature. Yet, her government is gutting environmental laws, thumbing its nose at parliamentary democracy, cutting back on immigration, short-changing our aboriginal people, allowing more illegal guns, hiding its activities from scrutiny and ignoring its own laws. Happy hypocrisy day, Ms Brown.

Another day, another pipeline spill A
recent pipeline leak sent 475,000 litres of oil into Alberta’s Red Deer River. It could have been worse; nothing was being pumped at the time. The company, Plains Midstream, claims the light sour crude may smell bad, but poses no risk to humans. It happened as crews were cleaning a larger spill from last year at another of the company’s pipelines. That one dumped 4.5 million litres of oil into the surrounding forest and wetlands. The recent Red Deer River spill was also the site of a leak in 2008. Industry figures show more than 3.4 million litres of fossil fuels have been accidentally released from pipelines every year in Alberta since 2006. One litre of spilled oil can contaminate one million litres of groundwater. Enbridge, the company that wants to build a dual pipeline from the tar sands to the British Columbia coast, has had more than 800 leaks and spills on its pipelines since 1999, sending close to 27 million litres of oil into the environment. That included a 2010 spill in Michigan that dumped 3.8 million litres of diluted tar sands bitumen into the Kalamazoo River. Cleanup costs for that are
David Suzuki already $765 million and the river is still contaminated. Of course, the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline, which will carry heavy bitumen 1,200 kilometres one way and Middle Eastern condensate the other way across close to 1,000 streams and rivers, will be different, we are assured: world-class safety standards, safety control valves, 24/7 monitoring, emergency responders… Where have these world-class standards been hiding until now? Enbridge only carries enough insurance to cover $575 million in damages, far less than incurred by the Kalamazoo spill. Who pays the rest if a spill happens after the company and its Chinese stateowned backers get their way B.C.?
Bitumen is riskier than regular oil or gas. It’s heavier and sinks in water, making cleanup difficult with longer-lasting negative environmental impacts. But, thanks to changes in the federal government’s Bill C-38, we’ll no longer have to think about potential damage to the waterways and land along the pipeline route, unless they’re home to “fish that are part of a commercial, recreational or Aboriginal fisheries.” These are just issues with spills. Even the other possible catastrophic environmental impacts of Northern Gateway — such as accidents involving more than 200 supertankers a year carrying the bitumen through the narrow and hazardous Douglas Channel and across the Pacific and down the coast to China and California for refining — pale in comparison to the larger issue: exploitation of fossil fuel deposits and the associated impacts of climate change, pollution and economic short-sightedness. The goal of our government and industry leaders appears to be to dig up as much oil as possible, as quickly as possible and sell it overseas, and damn the economic and environmental consequences. If that means selling entire tar sands operations and the bitumen to com-
panies owned by a government known for human rights abuses and environmental destruction; if it means polluting water and putting people’s health at risk; if it means killing birds, caribou and wolves; if it means putting our manufacturing industry at risk and not joining the green-energy economy, all for the sake of a few short-term and even fewer longterm jobs, who cares? There’s a quick buck to be made. And the economy will appear to chug along until the next election and maybe the one after that. And that’s surely enough time to dismantle many of the laws, policies and institutions that have made Canada the great country it is. Rather than rushing headlong into this and putting our environment, health and economy at risk, it would make more sense to step back, develop a national energy plan and figure out how we can use this valuable and diminishing resource efficiently and in a way that provides long-term benefits for all Canadians rather than a few industrialists and China’s totalitarian government.

York Region’s nine municipalities have significant service gaps for homeless people, social services general manager Cordelia Abankwa-Harris told the community and health services committee. In 2011, York Region shelters served 2,444 homeless people and families, a 66-per-cent increase during six years, she said. The ratio of 21 social housing units per 1,000 households and 103 shelter beds for every 100,000 people, rank York Region among Ontario communities with the least capacity to help the homeless. The system isn’t keeping pace with growing need for homelessness services and population growth, Ms Abankwa-Harris during her update on the region’s emergency homelessness services review. York administers a range of provincial and regional programs to address homelessness.
These include services dealing with the immediate impact of homelessness, such as emergency shelters and services helping meet other needs of people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, such as eviction prevention, street outreach, drop-in programs and housing searches. The community and health services department’s multi-year plan identified the need to review these programs in the face of the growing number of at-risk households, potential service and funding gaps and changing provincial policy as a result of the Ontario long-term affordable housing strategy. Consulting Matrix, a consulting firm with experience in York Region’s emergency shelter sector, conducted the first stage of the review. Work included a comprehensive literature review, interviews with emergency shelter operators and community agencies and discussions with department staff,
councillors heard. The review’s purpose was to describe the need for homelessness services in York Region and identify the programs and services that exist and gaps and challenges that need to be addressed. Consultants were also asked to describe effective practices and approaches in other areas and provide options for addressing gaps, aligning resources and collaborating with community partners.

Resident raises concerns From page 1.
• York Region Christian Seniors Homes owns 10 acres at 15600 Leslie St., of which it wants about one-third for five apartment buildings housing 400 units. • Shimvest Investments Ltd. (H&R Homes) wants to construct 359 units on its 40 hectares at Leslie and Wellington. Getting the plan right is important to both sides. For the town, it’s the last major swath of developable land before Aurora is entirely built out. On the other side of the coin, residents don’t want to see some of the town’s last greenspace swallowed up. Resident Angela Barbetta is particularly wary, given what she saw just to the west. The Daniels Corporation is developing the southeast corner of Bayview and St. John’s and Ms Barbetta said residents were shocked when they saw many trees cut down before the building started.
Aurora planning and development director Marco Ramunno offered assurance this is a different kind of project. “What’s significant about this block is that close to 40 per cent will be kept in its natural state,” he said. Because of new guidelines in the York Region and Aurora official plans, the development will also be more compact and have a greater range of housing types than what has been seen in recent years. Similarly, new rules ensure there is a logical progression of development, instead of streets being developed in isolation. Mr. Ramunno is also aware some residents are concerned about the extension of Hartwell Way, which will be the only midblock road linking Leslie and Bayview. That extension was in the development plans dating back a decade, he pointed out. Ms Barbetta, who lives just south of the proposed developments, wants to make sure residents know what’s going on. Following the planning meeting, a report will go to council for review.

affordable housing,” he said of the pool of experts from academia, private and nonprofit enterprise and municipal government. “We pushed the boundaries and opened doors to opportunity. Everyone showed great interest in the art of possibility.” Highlights of the session included a look at the ingenuity of affordable housing across Canada. Options For Homes president Michel Labbe has been involved in the production of affordable housing for more than three decades, the first 13 years with Lantana Nonprofit Housing Corporation. Speaking about the 3,700 low cost homes he’s built in Canada, he provided an overview of a model that can provide mixed income housing to thousands of people without permanent government subsidies. Avi Friedman, a housing consultant and co-founder of the affordable homes program at the McGill School of Architecture, where he teaches, detailed how the construction of elementary, unadorned homes can apply to any forward-thinking community. “Don’t expect granite counter tops,” he quipped to the standing-room-only audience, emphasizing the austerity of the shelters. The houses, starting at a modest 500 square feet, would provide essential, allseason comfort for residents who normally couldn’t rent, let alone own, a home, he said. While sizes, models and community configurations could differ, the construction costs would be significantly less than new
residential homes with luxury options. Built on land donated for the purpose, with development charges, building costs and commissions waived, the homeowners would be allowed to defer home-ownership levies for 10 years. Similar communities have been created and proven workable in Ottawa, St. James Town in Toronto and various other Canadian municipalities. Location of the low-cost units could be in stand alone areas or part of mixed development communities. People wouldn’t be upset to have affordable housing near their neighbourhoods, Mr. Taylor said, as the affordable housing residents would also be owners. The region would need to look at the concept from the standpoint of land availability and with respect to existing taxpayers, he said. “The people who move in will eventually be new taxpayers,” Mr. Taylor said. “It’s the real deal. We’d take people who normally couldn’t afford a home into home ownership. All this would lead to better health circumstances.” Poverty Action for Change Coalition chairperson Tom Pearson, a longtime advocate and voice for the region’s marginalized citizens, applauded the initiative, claiming he originally championed the low cost housing hypothesis and offered it to the region in 2010.

Province offers energy breaks for business expansion Businesses seeking to expand in the province may be eligible for energy rate reductions. Ontario is establishing an industrial electricity incentive program for companies looking to substantially expand their operations. To help boost the province’s economy, the program encourages large corporations to create more jobs in return for a better rate on electricity usage. The government’s focus is on creating jobs and economic growth, Economic Development and Innovation Minister Brad Duguid said, adding that what this program does. The program, to which companies can apply in the new year, is broken down into
two streams: existing and new companies. Existing companies will be able to pay a reduced price for electricity on the expansion until 2020. New companies making an investment of more than $250 million in new technology, products or processes would be offered a long-term contract through the Ontario Power Authority. The government is developing the application process, company criteria and rules and regulations for the program. — Amanda Persico

As York sizzles, the cool waves of Lake Simcoe wait. And due to the warm weather this spring, York Regional Police has been on the water since March. While the season started early, the volume of traffic on the lake has been slow to this point, something Staff Sgt. Greg Williams suggested could be related to the high cost of fuel or the turbulent economy. But he expects hundreds of personal watercraft to eventually hit the waves and the force’s marine unit will be there if there is an emergency. The primary York police vessel is the Waawaatessi, a 10-metre boat that went into service in 2005. The force also uses smaller vessels for getting around the lake and waterways. Perhaps counterintuitively, emergency calls often don’t involve newbie boaters, but those who believe they have the skill to beat the weather or conditions, Const. David Flood said. Conditions on Lake Simcoe can be tricky, changing quickly and severely, he added. As early as March 3, a large portion of ice had separated in a two-kilometre stretch north of Lake Drive and Civic Centre Road in Georgina and open water could be seen from the shore. Marine officers were sent to check out a hut attached to a piece of ice floating on the water. The hut was unoccupied. “The lake never really froze,” Staff Sgt. Williams said.
STAY SAFE Wear proper clothing and flotation attire and always be prepare for the unexpected. Never venture onto the lake alone. Ensure you have a cellphone with a fully charged battery in the event of an emergency. Tell someone your plans, including where, when and with whom you will be. — source: York Regional Police
Marine officers deem all incidents serious because the people in trouble can’t simply get out and walk back to the shore, Staff Sgt. Williams noted. The marine unit responded to 532 calls last year, 17 of which were to help other police forces. More than 1,080 boats were stopped and more than 180 provincial and federal charges laid during the boating season. Five arrests were made. The officers said they have noticed a drop in the number of impaired boat operators they have had to deal with in the last few years. That said, the officers have the ability to radio cars on the shore to meet them if they need to make an arrest and will tow the boat of an impaired operator, Const. Flood said.

You can find out more about the proposed Upper York Sewage Solutions project in East Gwillimbury during a presentation Thursday at the East Gwillimbury Sports Complex, 1914 Mount Albert Rd., Sharon. Following the presentation, there will be a question and answer period. Fill bylaw goes before committee East Gwillimbury’s engineering and environmental services staff will present the town’s new fill bylaw and operational guidelines tomorrow. The town has compiled months of deputations, resident comments and presentations from members of the East Gwillimbury Citizens for Clean Water and Air. The new bylaw seeks to regulate dumping of commercial fill to ensure groundwater is protected. The bylaw and guidelines will be presented to committee of the whole at 1 p.m. Following the meeting and bylaw approval, the bylaw is subject to a 45-day public review, where comments will, once again, be collected and presented to town council in the fall. Monday’s committee of the whole meeting will also see a deputation from mem-
bers of the East Gwillimbury Environmental Group about the town’s official plan as it relates to the Upper York Sewage Solution. At 7 p.m., council will consider a resolution on the proposed water reclamation centre, calling for the region to give additional consideration to other site locations prior to a decision and including public comments about the four shortlisted sites in the environmental assessment process. For more information, visit eastgwillimbury.ca
Share thoughts on culture Share your vision for East Gwillimbury’s cultural plan, which will be an overall vision and set of strategies to guide cultural development over the next decade. You are asked to help shape a cultural vision for the town. “Culture in a community defines who we are,” Mayor Virginia Hackson said. “This plan will help us articulate our identity and it is also an important piece of our economic development strategy.” The project also includes a community survey and forum to discuss the town’s cultural vision. The forum is Tuesday, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Civic Centre. To complete the survey, visit surveymonkey.com/s/2CW239V For more information, visit eastgwillimbury.ca — Amanda Persico

Behind every long-lasting air conditioner stands a good contractor BY JUSTIN BAUER In the midst of stifling summer heat, most homeowners can take comfort in knowing salvation lies just a button-push away. But without the right air conditioner and a reliable maintenance contractor, you may not be getting all the relief or efficiency you expected. “Life expectancy on air conditioning is typically somewhere in the 10 to 15-year range, says Canco ClimateCare’s Nancy McKeraghan. Homeowners should be mindful of any change in cooling capacity and consider calling a service technician to diagnose the decline in performance, she says. It could be the unit needs a new part or a repair to address leaking refrigerant, two potentially costly fixes that might not be worthwhile if the air conditioner is already 10 years old, adds Ms McKeraghan. Hossein Forouzan of Aire One Heating & Cooling cautions that while a well-maintained air conditioner can cool satisfactorily for over a decade, their efficiency is a lot lower than models available today. “It might not be cost-effective to keep running that air conditioner, he says. A breath of fresh air Both Mr. Forouzan and Ms McKeraghan point out that the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) is continuing to offer until Dec. 31 an incentive of $250 to $400 for replacing an existing central air conditioner with a new Energy Star-qualified model. Several factors deserve attention when shopping for a new air conditioner. One is noise level, says Mr. Forouzan, especially for units situated near a backyard patio or pool. Another is warranty.
Michael Campagnolo, with Summers and Smith Cooling & Heating Ltd., recommends homeowners read the fine print on warranties: While 10-year warranties on parts are common today, those that also include labour should be viewed as a red flag by consumers. In this case a company may be less inclined to address concerns in a timely manner, especially if it isn’t located nearby. For Ms McKeraghan, the Number 1 concern is the capacity of the unit. “An in-house visit must be done and a calculation called the heat gain performed, she explains. “And that is really crucial because if it’s oversized by half a tonne, you’ve lost three efficiency points. And the indoor and the outdoor coil must match in order to get the stated efficiency. Oliver Heating & Cooling’s Steve Desjardins points out that a number of other cooling options exist, including ductless, in-wall, inceiling, portable and window air conditioners, which have “come a long way in performance. But, he says, central air, where possible, is usually the best option because it works efficiently and unobtrusively. The “who more important than the “what All four experts emphasise the importance of using a reputable contractor to size, install and service an air conditioner. Mr. Campagnolo says that, while people often fixate on price, “sometimes the sweet taste of a good deal is really soured by the poor service, so consumers should do their homework on contractors as much as equipment. Ms McKeraghan recommends HRAI’s (Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada) website, hrai.ca, as a reliable source of information and as a database of certified contractors.
Maintain and outlast While most service should be done by a qualified technician. homeowners can take a few small steps as well. You should clean the condenser coil regularly with a light hosing off after turning it off at the disconnect switch, he says, otherwise dust and dirt will build up and cause the unit to work harder than necessary. You should also keep their furnace filter clean, says Mr. Desjardins, to ensure more efficient operation and a longer life for the unit.

It’s It t’s so hot outside and my air conditioning in my ve vehicle isn’t blowing out any cold air. o W What should I do? It’s terrible when your air condition conditioning isn’t working inn the hot summer heat heat. The best approach is to have an air conditioning performance test done to your vehicle. This test allows us to check the pressure in your air conditioning system. With this test, we put in an additive that is activated by ultra violet light which allows us to trace it through your A/C system which in turn will show us if there are any leaks or possibly if one of the parts in your A/C system is no longer working. We can diagnose & repair A/C systems on most foreign & domestic vehicles. With A/C systems it is hard to say what is malfunctioning or leaking until the performance test is done. It could be anything from having your A/C compressor replaced to having your air conditioning system evacuated & recharged with Freon. The A/C performance test generally takes about 1/2 hour to 45 mins. & is well worth it in the summer heat we’ll be having! Book your appointment today.

Plumbing Services MIKE RIZZI
Why would I want a water softener to so soften my water?? There are various reasons why you would want to soften your home’s water. For instance it will protect your biggest investment, your home! It also greatly reduces scaling of pipes, faucets, pots and glasses. As well, if you have a tankless hot water system, most manufacturers will void the warranty if you don’t run soft water through the unit. When you wash your skin with hard water there is a layer of soap and minerals that is left on your skin. This is what causes the supposed “squeaky-clean” feeling, with soft water the soap is completely rinsed away, leaving the natural oils your skin produces. www.js-services | erabanner@js-services.ca | 289-319-0403

I’ve heard that there are vinyl tiles that can be grouted. Is this a gro good option? It is an excellent option if you are talking about luxury vinyl tiles with optional grouting ( stay clear of the low quality/ peel and stick types). Luxury vinyl tiles allow for a warm, comfortable, high performance, easy care floor that can be grouted to capture a true natural stone or ceramic tile look. These tiles are glued in place, then grouted with premixed, stain and crack resistant specialty grouts. Heating & Air NANCY Conditioning McKERAGHAN What is inverter technology?
A convictionn can result in the increase of your automobile insurance rates. Insurance companies determine your rates based on a number of factors. One of those factors is the quantity and the severity of any convictions on your driving record. In order to preserve a good driving record and thus cheaper insurance, you should fight ALL of your traffic tickets. Call us for a free consultation.
Inverter technology hnology is foun found in some air conditioner and heatpump compressors. Typically a compressor has a fixed speed, operating at 100% capacity to maintain the desired temperature. An inverter compressor can vary its capacity. This allows for a wider range of temperature modes, even to operate at low outdoor temperatures. An inverter compressor can operate faster allowing the air conditioner to reach desired temperatures faster, thereby bringing comfort sooner. Because the inverter’s capacity can fluctuate, it can be more energy efficient than a fixed speed compressor as it does not stop and start its motor continually.

Why does the dentist need to do X-rays when I go for my cleaning and check up?
Dental x-rays provide valuable information that helps the dentist evaluate a patient’s oral health. With the help of X-rays (also called a radiograph), the dentist can see what is happening beneath the surface of your teeth and gums. Many diseases cannot be seen by the dentist with just a visual exam of the mouth. An X-ray can therefore aid the dentist in finding areas of decay in between teeth, cavities under existing fillings, infections in the bone, gum disease and some types of tumours. Finding and treating these problems early, with the help of X-rays, can save time, money, and unnecessary discomfort.

Did you kknow the D h lilinkk bbetween diabetes and hearing loss has been known since the early 1960’s? Hearing loss iss more than twic twice as common in people with diabetes than in people without the condition, according to an analysis of 13 studies, including one conducted by the National Institute of Health. The high blood sugar levels may lead to hearing loss by damaging the nerves and blood vessels of the inner ear, making it harder to hear. Diabetics should be screened routinely for hearing loss, just as they are for eye and kidney problems. Hearing loss due to diabetes is typically a high frequency sensory-neural hearing loss which can be treated successfully with hearing aids. To learn how to act like a pro, you need to know how a pro acts. That’s the message behind a camp for 42 of Canada’s brightest bantam-aged hockey prospects invited to attend the second Allstate All-Canadians Mentorship Camp next month in Mississauga. Among the young players attending the five-day camp July 17 to 21 at the Hershey Centre is Newmarket’s Connor McDavid, the first overall pick in the Ontario Hockey League draft this spring. The intense five-day camp is hosted by the NHL Players’ Association under the leadership of retired NHLer Gary Roberts, who, along with several NHLers and experts in off-ice fields, will school the youngsters on topics ranging from hockey skills development, physical fitness, nutrition habits, sports psychology and life and mental skills. Last year’s inaugural camp included 28 first-round draft picks from the WHL and OHL. McDavid, who played for the Toronto Marlies minor midgets last season and was granted exceptional player status for the OHL draft this spring, can’t wait. “I knew of it last year and hoped to go with the kids a year up,” said the 15-year-old, who has played with players one year his senior throughout minor hockey. “It’s a learning experience ... I’m really excited for it. The guys that went last year said it was such a fun time. “It’s something I really wanted to do and I had a few butterflies until it was official.”

McDavid invited to NHLPA program McDavid is training under Roberts, a noted physical fitness advocate during his 21-year NHL career, as he prepares to launch his OHL career. The young players are to be divided into two teams for a scrimmage on the final day, which will be broadcast on TSN. “These young players and their families will learn what is required of them to get to the next level in their careers,” Roberts said. “Through personal experience, I look forward to sharing my story, emphasizing the impact that off-ice skills like fitness and nutrition had on my career. Last year’s camp had and everlasting impact on the 42 players we worked with and I look forward to continuing the tradition.” The feedback from the inaugural camp was enlightening, NHLPA licencing director Adam Larry said. “When this was put together, it was to provide information about everything it takes, right across the board, what is important and integral to becoming an NHL player,” Larry said. The camp attracted about 20 NHL players in its inaugural year. “Time and time again, those players said the first time they met an NHL player was when they walked into their first camp,” Larry said. “For these kids to meet Jason Spezza or have lunch with Luke Schenn and talking with these players about their on and off-ice experiences is something.” Parents are also included in the camp, having provided with an opportunity to meet other prospects’ parents and learn tips for their own children.

Brooks heads to second Olympics BY JOHN CUDMORE
jcudmore@yrmg.com
As a schoolgirl, Mount Albert’s Jacqueline Brooks undertook a yearlong project suggesting an early passion for the Olympics Games. “It was about what I love about the Olympics, although my parents referred to it as everything you didn’t want to know about the Olympics,” recalled Brooks, 44. These days, she is experiencing what it is like to be part of the action, perhaps to one day be part of another young student’s project. Brooks was confirmed Wednesday as a member of the Canadian dressage team that will compete at the 2012 Games in London starting July 27. Dressage is Aug. 2 to 8. Perhaps the school project was an inkling of things to come for Brooks, who competed in the Beijing Olympics in 2008 aboard Gran Gesto, helping Canada to a ninthplace showing in the team competition. The tandem also notched a silver medal at the 2003 Pan American Games. This time, Brooks will be aboard D-Niro after the tandem clinched team berths by winning the grand prix and grand prix special events at the final qualifying event in Blainville, Que. earlier this month. “To go to two consecutive Games on two different horses, I’m pretty proud of that,” Brooks said. “D-Niro wasn’t ready and I had to bring him along. “The speed is that much quicker and the skills are much more difficult. It’s like the difference between the minor and major leagues in any other sport.” Brooks, who rides out of the family-owned Brookhaven Farm in Cedar Valley, departs for England today for a pre-Olympic competition and Canadian team training

camp. D-Niro left yesterday. The tandem has been together for only 15 months. D-Niro was purchased from a friend in Florida who suggested the now 13-year-old Swedish warmblood gelding might be a good fit for Brooks. “He just said he had a horse that would suit me,” she said. “I tried him. There was just something about him that convinced me I could take the risk. “It’s been a whirlwind. He was at a Pan Am level, but not an Olympic level and had to learn at that level. “Horses are very intuitive. At competitions, they are so very aware of the change in their routine and that they are on display for six minutes. “That will be the challenge. The venue will be electric and the crowds large because England is so supportive of its equestrian sports, but I really trust this horse.” Because equestrian events were staged in Hong Kong in 2008, Brooks
missed out on the chance to participate in the opening ceremonies in Beijing. This time, equestrian competition is slated for London’s Greenwich Park and in close proximity to many venues. She looks forward to marching into the Olympic stadium with her Canadian teammates. “In 2008, our events were done in time for closing ceremonies,” she said. “It was amazing. The energy in the building was crazy. I think I’m anticipating the same thing and the energy.” Brooks is a late-comer to the sport. She took up dressage riding after graduating from the University of Western Ontario. She served as a groom for Canadian Olympic teammate Ashley Holzer at the 1999 Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba. She is counting on her 2008 Olympic experience to be a positive factor this time. “It was a life-long goal to get to the Olympics, so the excitement was greater than the results,” Brooks said, recalling Beijing. “I had one of my best rides, but not nearly as competitive as four years later. If we all have a great day, we can probably get the best results for Canada.” Canada’s only medal in the European-dominated sport of dressage is a bronze in the 1988 Games in South Korea.

sincerely from the bottom of my heart! I was rushed to SRHC by EMS Saturday, June 16th, 2012 around 4:20pm from the Tim Horton's Drive Thru in Bradford. Joe, what you did for me this past Saturday not only was the most heartfelt thing anyone has ever done for me but you saved my life sir! You didnt have to take the time for me that day, I trusted a complete stranger with my life, my new car and my beloved pet! I have never been so grateful in my life! You know where I live, please allow me to thank you personally for what you did for me that day. You will always be in my thoughts and prayers. If you kept my business card sir, please call me!
