10.00am – 1.00pm

Saturday 3 February, Sunday 4 February, Sunday 11 February 2018

Venue: King Street Arts Centre, Perth Cost: Students $22 each or $55 for all 3 sessions, Member Teachers $52.50 each or $105 for all 3 sessions, Non-Member Teachers $75 each or $150 for all three sessions (inc GST) Registrations close: Monday 29 January 2018 Registration: www.ausdancewa.org.au/workshops Recommended for: Year 11 and 12 WACE Dance students and secondary teachers Devised and presented by Phillippa Clarke, this three-part workshop series aims to combine biomechanical principles of the body with improvisation and performance skills to improve confidence and outcomes in preparation for ATAR Dance practical examinations. Teachers will have an opportunity to place themselves into the mind and body of the student and experience the rigour of thinking, responding and creativity expected of the Year 12 dance student.

These workshops will: • Develop the dancer’s kinetic and visual imagination to improve understanding and manipulation of choreographic devices and creative processes; • Create opportunities to devise and perform improvised and choreographed solos that link performance tasks with visual and spoken responses; • Investigate different ways of responding to and talking about dance making and performing to deepen involvement and understanding of their own and others’ creative processes and performances.

Workshop Themes

• Lines of Motion: A development of Motif and Space • Drawing with the Body: An exploration of Energy and Emotions • Playing with Gravity: An investigation of Momentum and Time

All workshop activities and responses will reference the dance language and concepts outlined in the WACE Year 11 and 12 Dance Syllabus. Workshops can be taken individually, but ideally should be completed as a series of three. Subject to interest, Ausdance WA will consider facilitating a second workshop series later in 2018.

She is fascinated with the moving image and this is the fundamental reason that she performs, creates movement and makes film. The influence of form, structure and mark in contemporary painting, architecture and film emerge in her work, visual references guide her choreography from the moment of inception and these visual synchronicities are evident in the final work. To date Laura’s work explores social, political and environmental concepts for theatre, gallery and site-specific spaces, she uses performance as a tool to inspire critical thought and reflection on the contemporary world. Collaboration is an integral part of these creations through the integration of live sound, installation and visuals. Working in a multidisciplinary environment enables the formation of new landscapes and constructs providing a realm for her material to sway between narrative and abstraction. As a dancer Laura has performed nationally and internationally in dance, theatre, experimental music, site-specific and opera works since graduating from LINK Dance Company in 2007. From 2009-2013 Laura performed for Buzz Dance Theatre. In 2013 she acted as Artistic Associate alongside Artistic Director Cadi McCarthy choreographing and co-directing Look the Other Way, Winner of the Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Youth and Community Dance. Laura has choreographed multiple short and full-length works and co-directed large commissions for dance companies such as LINK Dance Company, Buzz Dance Theatre, Co3 and the WA Academy of Performing Arts. In 2016 Laura was voted as Most Outstanding Dancer (Dance Australia Critics Choice) for her work Sous Vide presented at the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2015. Laura recently premiered new work Dark Matter with multidisciplinary collective PRAXIS and Performing Lines WA at the 2016 MOVEME Festival. Dark Matter was shortlisted for a 2017 Australian Dance Award for Independent Dance. Laura’s films have been shown in Reeldance, Electrofringe, (Australia) Cinedans (Amsterdam) and two of her films remain permanently in the Reeldance Moving Image Collection. P H I L L I P P A C L A R K E is a dance artist and educator with decades of experience in teaching and making dance with people of all ages and abilities. Her interest in improvisation has nurtured her choreographic and teaching practice at WAAPA, primary and secondary schools and her work as Director of Still Moves Dance Laboratory and Buzz Dance Theatre as well as her own independent work with digital technology. Phillippa believes improvisation skills are an essential component to understanding the dancing body, decision making, creativity and discovering new ways of responding to and making meaningful dance.
