2016-17 Annual Report
Dear Friends of Adelphi Athletics, Welcome to the 2016-17 Adelphi Athletics Annual Report! We have a lot to celebrate from this past year as our student-athletes accomplished so much on the fields of play, in the classroom and in the community. It is always hard to say goodbye to another school year and another group of seniors, but we have so much to be proud of as we look back on 2016-17. For the fourth time in the past five years, Adelphi won the NE10 Conference Presidents’ Cup for overall excellence. This has been an incredible run of success for our coaches and student-athletes. Additionally, we finished 19th in the country in the NCAA DII Learfield Cup standings (out of 262 institutions). These honors are special because they require contributions from everyone in the athletics department to achieve these results. In the classroom, our student-athletes continue to perform at record levels as every one of our 23 sports teams achieved a team GPA of 3.0 or higher in both the fall and the spring semesters. In fact, we had 79% of our student-athletes earn a 3.0 GPA in the spring semester. We also had six student-athletes recognized for their exceptional work in the classroom and on the fields of play by earning CoSIDA Academic All-American status. These six bring the total number of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in our school’s history to 33. Our student-athletes also gave back to the community by donating over 2,000 hours of their time to local causes. They raised funds and resources for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Island Harvest, organized clinics to raise awareness and funds for children with pediatric cancer and Down’s Syndrome, celebrated Reading Month in March by visiting local elementary schools in Hempstead, and participated in countless more community initiatives. Our students truly understand the support they receive from the university, their families and friends and enjoy giving back to the community around them. On campus, our recreation staff had a very busy year providing programming and opportunities for the university community. This year we sponsored 13 club sports, saw increased participation in intramurals and recreation, started new initiatives such as “Intramurals under the Lights” and began construction on a new functional training room to provide Cross-fit style training for our community. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our many friends, family members and alumni that have supported the athletics department through the Panther Club and its fundraising events. Without your support, we would not be able to provide our student-athletes such an outstanding experience. Once again, this year, we set records with our fundraising efforts and that is due to your commitment to Adelphi Athletics. I hope that you enjoy looking through these pages and reading about the many accomplishments of our student-athletes, coaches and staff. I look forward to seeing you on campus during the upcoming year! Sincerely,
Danny McCabe Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation

The Dynasty Continues - Adelphi Captures Second Straight and Fourth Presidents’ Cup For the second-consecutive year, Adelphi University has won the Northeast-10 Conference Presidents’ Cup, it was revealed at the league’s annual year-end banquet on Sunday, June 4. It is the fourth NE10 Presidents’ Cup for the Panthers in the last five years. Adelphi won the award during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons before finishing as the runner-up following the 2014-15 academic year. “Congratulations to all the student-athletes, coaches and administrators at Adelphi on winning their second straight Presidents’ Cup,” said NE10 Commissioner Julie Ruppert. “To earn this honor requires tremendous dedication and commitment from the entire campus community, and the entire Adelphi family should share in the celebration of this accomplishment. Adelphi, which garnered 187.5 total points on the year, was helped by their five NE10 titles throughout the year. Conference championships in Men’s Soccer, Softball, Women’s Basketball, Women’s Lacrosse, and Women’s Tennis helped propel the Panthers to the top spot once again. Stonehill finished as the runner-up with a total of 174 points on the year, moving up one spot following their third-place finish a year ago. Merrimack finished third with having garnered 171 points. The Presidents’ Cup is presented annually to signify overall athletic excellence in the NE10. The honor is awarded to the institution that compiles the most cumulative points based on finishes in the regular season standings from all of its programs competing in league championships. Points for men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, and men’s and women’s golf are awarded based on placement in those sports’ respective conference championships.

Women’s Lacrosse Wins Program’s Eighth National Crown The Adelphi University women’s lacrosse team brought home its eighth national championship title Sunday afternoon with a 6-4 defeat of Florida Southern at Steph Pettit Stadium, on the campus of Bloomsburg University. For the graduating class, this was the fourth appearance in the title game and third title in four years. Leading the way for Adelphi (21-1) was All-Tournament team member Kate Beier, who finished the contest with four goals on six shots. Beth Ann Pierce and Jacqueline Jahelka, named tournament MVP, also registered lone goals in the win. Beier got things started for the Panthers after five minutes of the opening frame, with a feed from Kole Pollock. The Moccasins wasted no time and commanded action for a good part of the half, rattling off three goals in that time to jump out to a two-goal advantage. Shannon Gilfedder, also an All-Tournament team selection, was responsible for two of those goals and even converted in a man-up possession. Before the half was able to expire, Beier added her second of the game to bring Adelphi within one of the Mocs courtesy of a pass from Ryley Weber. Coming out of the locker room, Adelphi was able to even the score on Beier’s hat trick goal at 28:28. Pierce was a awarded a free position attempt just over a minute later which she converted after back-to-back fouls and an assessed yellow card to Florida Southern. “I thought we would score more, but I did believe that we would give up very few [goals],” said Head Coach Pat McCabe in the post-game press conference. “I knew it was this defense that was going to carry us -- they’ve carried us since I’ve been here and certainly this year. We had the ultimate confidence in this defensive group, and Hailey Peterson in goal, that we were going to stand pretty tall. As the game wore on, when we found ourselves a little bit more offensively...we executed enough to go away with it. It was an effort that I’m very, very proud of.” “When we needed plays, again and again, it was the same -- it was Kate Beier, it was Ryley Weber, it was Jen Graham, it was Jacqueline Jahelka -- they’ve carried this program on their shoulders and they leave us in a very good place.” The defense came into play after Pierce’s goal gave AU the lead as the Panther defense caused two turnovers before adding another goal at 13:29, this time as Alison Johnson connected with Jahelka for her 72nd of the season. As the clock began to wind down, the home team moved the ball around netminder Taylor Gillis and the Moc defense. A late foul on Gillis set up an open-net free position attempt for Beier, which she buried to give her team a two-goal advantage with five minutes to play. In total, the Panthers’ defense caused 11 of Florida Southern’s 17 turnovers, and limited the Mocs to just two shots in the second half. They also forced four failed clears for the Mocs (14-18) while remaining perfect on their own attempts down the other end (15-15).

The best players always play- It does not matter that you are new, or that you are young or that you may have never done this before. Do everything you can to make yourself a go-to player and you will be rewarded.”

A New Look: Adelphi University Rolls Out New Brand, Athletics Logos Redesigned Adelphi University proudly launched a new era for the school with the reveal of an online Style Guide and Brand Center in late June. A striking, modern new Adelphi University wordmark, athletics wordmark, and new AU lettermark were introduced. The new Adelphi lettermark, formerly referred to as the “block AU,” was created for use when the entire wordmark is not possible. The new lettermark prominently displays the initials of the university, and is a modern take on the letters sewn on athletic jackets in years past. The Athletic department received a set of logo options to be used on uniforms, gear, and equipment. “We are truly excited to embrace the new logos and embody the vibrant brand that is Adelphi University,” commented Associate Athletic Director for External Relations Emily Dorko. “The new marks will complement the athletics website redesign which is slated to launch some time in the fall.” The panther logo also underwent a redesign. The result? A bold one-dimensional approach with strong outlines. The last set of athletics marks were created by Phoenix Design Works and were launched in 2008.
