2017-18 Annual Report
Dear Friends of Adelphi Athletics, Once again, this past year brought many moments, which made us all proud to be associated with Adelphi Athletics. Our student-athletes had another outstanding year on the fields of play while also performing in the classroom and standing out in the community. It was a great year to be a Panther! It is often said that at Adelphi, the people make the place. Well, in the athletics department this year, we were fortunate to have some truly wonderful people representing the Brown and Gold. Adelphi won NE10 Conference championships in men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s tennis, women’s lacrosse and softball. In addition, we had a number of individuals stand out among their peers by earning individual honors from their conference. Those individuals include Toni Soler – men’s soccer Player of the Year; Rececca Fakas – women’s tennis Player of the Year; Isabel Sandstrom – women’s soccer Goalkeeper of the Year; Mia York – women’s soccer Rookie of the Year; Rebecca Gotterbarn – bowling Player of the Year; Alison Johnson - women’s lacrosse Player of the Year; Brenna Martini - softball Player of the Year; Dennis Kearney – bowling Coach of the Year and Carlo Acquista – men’s soccer Coach of the Year. In the classroom this spring, over 80% of our student-athletes earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher. This figure led the NE10 Conference. Included in this group were 33 student-athletes who achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA. Additionally, this year Adelphi had four students earn Academic All-American honors: Michael Coffey - men’s basketball, Rebecca Fakas - women’s tennis, Brendan McDougal – men’s lacrosse and Brenna Martini – softball. In addition to these accomplishments, our students also found time to give back to the community around them as they volunteered to read in the Hempstead Public Schools and spent time with the children at the Hempstead Boys & Girls Club among many other community initiatives. This year the LGBT SportSafe Foundation awarded Adelphi Athletics Gold Medallion status for its efforts in creating an LGBTQ-inclusive environment for studentathletes. We are proud of the recognition and more proud of the open minds and hearts of our students and staff to create an environment where everyone is welcome to compete to their fullest on the Adelphi fields and courts of play. I hope you enjoy reading about our many accomplishments and milestones from the past academic year. I hope to see you on campus soon and thank you for your support of Panther Athletics! Sincerely,
Danny McCabe Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation

Northeast-10 Conference Woman of the Year Over four years at Adelphi, Brenna Martini was named All-Conference, All-Region and All-American - and now, she can also call herself a Woman of the Year. The Fairfield, Conn. native was named the NE10 Woman of the Year on Monday night at the Northeast-10 Conference’s season-ending banquet, an annual event which recognizes student-athlete and team achievements for the previous season. “Receiving the NE10 Woman of the Year award is an incredible honor,” Martini said. “I am so grateful that I am able to represent not only my team and school, but the NE10 Conference. A player does not win an award like this without the support of their team and their coaches, and I am so grateful to them for that.” The most decorated player in Adelphi softball history, Martini graduated as the program’s all-time leader in nearly all offensive categories, including batting average, home runs, RBIs, doubles, walks, runs scored and total bases. She was named the league’s Player of the Year in three straight seasons, the first in league history ever to do so, after earning Rookie of the Year laurels in her freshman year. In addition, Martini was a three-time All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association, including First Team selection in her sophomore and junior years. “When you play a team sport, awards are very seldom individual, and this award is no exception,” she added. “You also are not able to win an award like this without the support of your school and their administration, so I am very blessed to call myself a Panther.” The NE10’s Man and Woman of the Year awards honor student-athletes for their excellence in competition, in the classroom, and in community service. Martini will be forwarded to the NCAA for their National Woman of the Year award, which will be announced in October. Each of the league’s 15 member institutions nominated a student-athlete for each of these awards and the 30 total nominations were narrowed down to three finalists for each award, both of which were selected by the organization’s Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) Council. Tyler McLaren of Southern New Hampshire University’s cross country program was named the league’s Man of the Year. Martini was selected from three finalists which also included fellow softball student-athlete Alyssa WIlliamson of Merrimack, named the NE10 Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and Southern Connecticut State track and field athlete Christine Volz.

Three-peat: Women’s Tennis Wins Third Straight NE10 Title Weymouth, Mass. - She was the Northeast-10 Player of the Year, and Rebecca Fakas proved it for the Adelphi University women’s tennis team in the fall of 2017. The senior rallied from a set down to defeat Stonehill’s Victoria Barbetta, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No.1 singles to clinch the Panthers’ third straight NE10 title, 5-4. Fakas, named the most Outstanding Player of the NE10 Championship for the second year in a row due to her heroics, came from a set and a break down to clinch the top flight victory, and with it the NE10 trophy and another automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. Adelphi avenged a 6-3 defeat to Stonehill in the regular season, but the Panthers have bested the Skyhawks to win their three conference crowns - including by 5-4 scores in each of the past two years. The Panthers led 2-1 after doubles, winning at No.1 and No.3 to go into singles play in the lead. Stonehill took the first point of the match as Barbetta and Kate Cunningham defeated Samantha Perri and Elizabeth Kallenberg, 8-4, at No.2, but Adelphi quickly responded as Fakas and Karen Serina won 8-3 at top flight. The deciding match came down to No.3, in which Vanja Savic and Nicole Kielan flipped their result against Stonehill from the regular season meeting, as the senior and freshman teamed for an 8-4 win over Colleen O’Donnell and Isabelle Porter. The Skyhawks looked to make a push in singles, winning the first set at four of the six spots, but Perri and Kallenberg held firm for Adelphi with straight set victories which put the Brown and Gold on the precipice of the win. Perri cruised in her No.4 singles match over Nicole Downey, 6-1, 6-1 to give Adelphi a 3-1 lead, and Cunningham took a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Serina seconds later to make it 3-2. A 7-5, 6-1 victory for Kallenberg over Stonehill’s Alexandra Vo - her first career defeat to an NE10 conference opponent - put Adelphi one point away from the win, but the Skyhawks ensured that the match would be decided at the top spot after victories at No.3 and No.6. In a battle of two of the league’s best freshmen, Porter edged Kielan at No.3, 6-4, 7-5, winning the last four games of the match; while O’Donnell got a singles scalp over Savic, 7-5, 6-3 While the action was going on around her, Fakas was putting together a mammoth comeback against an in-form Barbetta over the course of three sets. From 6-3, 2-0 down, Fakas worked her way back into the match, eventually sending No.1 to a decider by breaking in the 10th game of the set. The senior set the tone early in the deciding set, breaking in Barbetta’s first service game and digging out of a 15-40 hole to lead 3-0 at the change of ends. Fakas built a 5-1 lead in the decider and had a match point on serve at that juncture, but withstood a comeback effort from Barbetta to clinch the match and championship victory. “These are the matches you want to be a part of, and the feeling of clinching for my team is something I will cherish forever,” Fakas said. “I’ve been honored to be a part of a team like this for the past four years.” Fakas’ decorated career came to an end in the spring, as she was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American, and one of the three finalists for the NE10 Female Scholar Athlete of the Year award.

For the first time, the championship provided for a 12-team tournament, with selections from the East, Atlantic, Midwest, and South Regions. Adelphi survived a 1310 decision to face top-seeded and hosts Le Moyne. Despite defeating the Dolphins to earn the NE10 Regular Season crown, the Brown and Gold fell 10-14 in the Championship and lost 11-14 to end the 2018 campaign. Kole Pollock scored four goals in the Second Round matchup, en route to setting a new single season scoring record of 85. For Adelphi, this was the first season since 2012 that the program did not advance to the Final Four.
•
Women’s Soccer - The Panthers were awarded the top seed in the East Region on the back of a 15-3 campaign which saw them win the Northeast-10 Conference regular season title for the third year in a row, though their conference tournament bid came to an end in the quarterfinals at the hands of Merrimack College. A pair of goals from Kerianne Scorce wasn’t enough to overturn an early deficit, as the top-seed saw its season come to an end at the hands of the fourth-seeded LIU

They earned hosting rights and the #2 seed with which they took the program’s 17th trip to NCAAs, despite falling in the third round. Against Goldey-Beacom in the second round, a gamewinner in the 108th minute capped a stunning double-overtime rally, and put the Panthers into the East Region final for the second straight year. • Men’s Golf - For the second straight year, Nick Kelapire traveled to West Virginia to represent the Adelphi University men’s golf team at the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Golf Championships. Over the course of three days, Kelapire played three rounds of golf to finish 92nd in a field of 108 competitors. The golfer finished first for the Panthers in every tournament throughout the spring season.

The team earned the fifth seed in the NCAA Division II East Regional and faced fourth-seeded Concordia (N.Y.). Ranked 44th in Division II in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s national rankings, the Brown and Gold saw their season end in the first round in a 5-1 loss, with the lone point for the coming from junior Samantha Perri and freshman Nicole Kielan at No.2 doubles. • Softball - The Northeast-10 Conference champions received the No.1 seed in the East Region and hosted one side of the regional, for the program’s seventh consecutive berth. Despite losing in the first round, the Panthers won twice the following day to advance to the final. The top-seeded Panthers fell to the hot bats of the fourth-seeded LIU Post Pioneers in the final game of the NCAA Division II East 1 Regional, 8-0.

Adelphi Athletics Recognized for Diversity & Inclusion Efforts in 2017-18 The Adelphi University athletic department has been awarded gold medallion status, the highest honor by the organization, by LGBT SportSafe for its efforts in creating an LGBTQ-inclusive athletic community. As a Founders’ Club member of LGBT SportSafe, Adelphi joins an elite group of institutions recognized as early adopters of inclusion. Founders Club status is awarded to the first two institutions from an NCAA-affiliated conference to complete join the program. Adelphi joins Pace University from the Northeast-10 Conference, and other athletic programs including the University of Oregon, the University of Nebraska, UCLA, North Carolina, Temple and Northwestern have earned this distinction. LGBT SportSafe works to make inclusion efforts sustainable by educating coaches and administrators on how they can lay an inclusive foundation to support student-athletes. The goal is to make every college and university in the United States LGBT SportSafe, so coaches and athletes alike can compete in welcoming, respectful and inclusive athletic communities. “We are excited to be recognized by LGBT SportSafe and are thrilled to be one of the early champions of this great program in the NE10,” said Athletic Director Danny McCabe. “One of the pillars of Momentum, the

Adelphi’s road to certification began in February, as the athletic department welcomed the organization’s co-founder Nevin Caple, pictured above with the softball team, to campus to speak to student-athletes and athletic department staff about the importance of inclusion. “We are thrilled to welcome Adelphi University to the LGBT SportSafe Inclusion Program as a Founders Club member. Academic Success for the Panthers The Adelphi University athletic department once again led the way in the Northeast-10 Conference in the classroom in the 2018-19 academic year. Adelphi had the highest percentage of student-athletes earn at least a 3.0 GPA in both semesters, ranking the department as the league-leader in that category five times in the past six semesters. In total, 285 of the 356 Adelphi student-athletes (80.1%) were named to the honor roll in the spring, and Adelphi also led the NE10 in student-athletes registering a 4.0. Overall, 33 Panthers achieved that benchmark this past semester. “Our student-athletes continue to succeed at extremely high levels in the classroom, and once again, I am so proud of their accomplishments.” said NE10 Commissioner Julie Ruppert. “Our membership’s commitment to academic success is unparalleled nationally, and this release proves that once again.” A remarkable 13 of the conference’s 15 institutions - 87% of the league’s membership - had at least 50% of their total student-athlete population claim NE10 Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll laurels. Bentley had the most student-athletes earn CHR honors among the 15 NE10 schools with 369 in total, while Franklin Pierce (28), and Merrimack (27) finished among the top three in in total 4.0s. Fairly remarkably, Adelphi, Bentley, Merrimack, Pace, Saint Michael’s, and Southern New Hampshire each had at least 50% of their overall student-athlete population post at least a 3.5 this past spring. Assumption had the second most honorees with 297, while Adelphi was third with 285. Adelphi University’s traditional “Family Weekend” received a facelift in the fall of 2017, and was relaunched as Adelphi Spirit Weekend, “All together for the first time ever.” In addition to the usual slate of alumni gatherings and a carnival, the university focused on creating events that brought alumni, current students and their families, supporters and community members to the Garden City campus for a weekend of fun. The men’s and women’s lacrosse programs hosted their annual alumni contests Friday evening, under the lights at Motamed Field and then continued the reunion off-campus. The weekend wrapped up with a baseball alumni game on William J. Bonomo Field on Sunday, followed by a team barbeque put together by the families of the current team.
The $270,000 project, funded exclusively by the generosity of donors and through team fundraising was completed in the fall of 2017.
