SOF TBALL

The Northeast-10 Conference The Northeast-10 Conference is an NCAA Division II conference that was established in 1979. The conference consists of 15 member institutions located throughout the Northeast in the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. With the addition of women’s golf in 2014-15, the NE10 now sponsors a total of 24 sports. The institutions that make up the Northeast-10 are Adelphi University (Garden City, N.Y.), American International College (Springfield, Mass.), Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.), Bentley University (Waltham, Mass.), Franklin Pierce University (Rindge, N.H.), Le Moyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.), Merrimack College (North Andover, Mass.), University of New Haven (West Haven, Conn.), Pace University (Pleasantville, N.Y.), Saint Anselm College (Manchester, N.H.), Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, Vt.), The College of Saint Rose (Albany, N.Y.), Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven, Conn.), Southern New Hampshire University (Manchester, N.H.), and Stonehill College (Easton, Mass.). The conference’s 15 member institutions are spread geographically from Syracuse, N.Y. to Waltham, Mass. and from Colchester, Vt. to Garden City, N.Y. Many of the members are located in or around the metropolitan areas of Albany, Boston, Manchester, New Haven, Worcester and New York City. The Northeast-10 was proud to welcome the New Haven and Adelphi in the conference’s latest expansion, adding to the powerful union of strong academic and athletic institutions. In addition, LIU Post (Brookville, N.Y.) is an associate member of the NE10 in the sports of field hockey and football. The Northeast-10 has evolved into a membership committed to competitive athletics programs that emphasize the education, both on and off the field, of more than 6,000 student-athletes. Among the many accomplishments of these institutions are NCAA Division II national championships in women’s basketball, women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s track and field, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving. The conference is coming off another successful year, collecting four national titles in 2015-16. Two champions from the NE10 were crowned at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships during the winter season. First it was American International’s Chandler Cotton, Jr., Kemani Hume, Leakey Kipkosgei and Chad Miller claiming the men’s distance medley relay title with a time of 9:48.02. Then Merrimack’s Carly Muscaro won the women’s 400-meter dash title with a time of 52.34 the following night. Muscaro wasn’t quite finished, however, as she defended her 400-meter dash crown at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship, winning her

second individual national championship of 201516 by finishing the 400 in 51.32, just .03 seconds shy of the meet record. The very next day, Le Moyne defeated Limestone, 8-4, to win its fifth NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship and cap off a perfect 20-0 season. When it came to NCAA postseason selections, the NE10 once again had another sensational year with 44 teams chosen to participate in national tournaments during the year. In addition, student-athletes from 32 different men’s and women’s golf, swimming and diving, cross country, and indoor and outdoor track & field teams competed for national titles. Of those 44 teams earning NCAA bids, 14 different Northeast-10 institutions were represented. Seven NE10 teams reached the national semifinal round, while three teams played in their respective sport’s national title game. It was a record year for the Northeast-10 academically in 2015-16 as well. Five NE10 institutions achieved a department Academic Success Rate (graduation rate) of at least 90 percent. Four achieved a score of 95 percent or better, ranking them in the top seven nationally. A record 61 percent of the league’s student-athletes were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll in the spring with 243 posting a perfect 4.0 GPA. Another new record was set this summer with the release of Team Academic Excellence awards, as 75 percent of the league’s 292 teams achieved a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. The NE10 also honored 247 student-athletes as members of its academic all-conference teams during the fall, winter and spring seasons. The Northeast-10 also remains focused on its community endeavors. The conference has built a strong partnership with Team IMPACT, a non-profit organization that matches children with life-threatening illnesses with college sports teams. In 2015, the NE10 became the first ‘fully-matched’ conference in Division II, as at least one team from each member institution has matched with a Team IMPACT child. More than 60 NE10 teams currently have matches through Team IMPACT. The conference’s fundraising efforts for Make-A-Wish are also more than any other Division II conference in the country over the past decade. Through the establishment and enforcement of regulations, the conference aims to encourage policies that enable intercollegiate athletics programs to contribute to and be considered an integral part of the total educational offerings at our member institutions. The Northeast-10 can look to a long history of success including the growth from seven original member institutions to more than double its size 36 years later, the contention for and winning of multiple national championships, and the recognition of student-athlete performances off the field and in the classroom.

Softball Team History Adelphi University’s varsity softball program began in 1972 under the direction of Janet L. Ficke, and such began an era not to be matched by any other Adelphi program. In 17 years at the helm of the softball program, Ficke amassed a 362-160-3 record, five NCAA Tournament berths and three College World Series appearances. Ficke, along with coach Kathryn Raub, led the Panthers to their first ever NCAA tournament appearance in 1982. The Panthers returned two years later to claim its first Regional title, and an eventual fifth place in the NCAA College World Series. Adelphi returned to the World Series again in 1985, finishing fifth for the second time. In 1985, coach Ficke turned over the program to Kathryn Raub, staying on as Associate Head Coach. In 1987, Raub was named Northeast Region Coach of the Year. In 1993 Kate Whalen, formerly the assistant softball and volleyball coach at Fairfield University, took over as coach of the Panthers, successfully transitioning the program from Division I to Division II. She has guided the team to ten winning season in her 11 years at Adelphi. Adelphi competed at the Division II level for the first time in 1995, finishing 13-27 overall. Although it faced some East Coast Conference (ECC) teams in the past, Adelphi officially began ECC play that same year. It did not take Adelphi long to earn conference honors. In 1996, Deanna Ivanicki and Terri Moran were named All-ECC and in 1996 coach Whalen was named the ECC Coach of the Year. The 1997 team set three milestones, finishing with 30 wins, bringing home its first-ever ECC title with a 8-2 win over C.W. Post and its first ECAC Mid-Atlantic title. In 1999, the team set a new season best, finishing 33-18, for its most successful season to-date since becoming a Division II program. The Panthers finished second at the ECC tournament. The 2000 season marked another first, claiming the program’s first ever ECC Regular season Championship. Adelphi also

made its first NCAA tournament appearance as a Division II program, and the team’s first bid in 10 years. The Panthers, 27-20, finished third at Regionals. In 2001, the Panthers again set a new school record for most wins, with a 34-21 overall record and capped with their second ECAC Mid-Atlantic title in three years. In 2002, host Adelphi finished second to Pace University in the ECAC Tournament and second in the ECC tournament with a 31-18-1 overall record. The 2003 team set a new Division II school record for wins in a season, posting a 35-17 mark. The Panthers made their second-ever NCAA DII Tournament appearance and had four players named to the Northeast region team. No. 2 Adelphi again hosted the ECAC Tournament in 2004, finishing third overall. The Panthers went 27-21 on the season and 19-5 in the ECC to a third place regular season finish. The 2005 Panthers saw their post-season dreams cut short with an early exit in the ECC Tournament to Bridgeport, 1-0. Adelphi (25-16) posted its tenth consecutive 20+ win season and received four All-ECC selection. Junior Amy Delmore was not only named ECC Player of the Year, but earned AllAmerica second team honors for her outstanding performance in 2005. She is just the third Adelphi player to receive AllAmerica recognition and the first since 1988. In October, 2005, after a successful fund-raising campaign, the softball field was renamed Janet L. Ficke Field. Adelphi returned to the NCAA DII Regional in 2006, finishing third overall. The Panthers won their last tournament game vs. UMass-Lowell, 5-1, but because of rain delays, the Regional was cut short with the winner determined by overall record. Carla Buonviaggio and Amy Delmore earned NCAA Northeast Region All-Tournament honors. Coach Whalen picked up her second ECC Coach of the Year honor for leading her team to a 16-5 league record and a second place finish. Six players

A total of six players earned all-conference honors, led by senior Julie Schaper who was named ECC Pitcher of the Year. Schaper boasted a 22-5 overall record and 1.68 ERA on the mound and led the league in strikeouts and opposing batting average. She cracked the 500 strikeouts and 50 wins mark wins, finishing her career with 570 strikeouts and 56 wins. This ranks her second and fourth in Adelphi’s all-time history, respectively.

The Panthers continued their winning tradition in 2007, but this time without the guidance of Kate Whalen who resigned her position after 12 years. Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation DANNY

McCABE After a nationwide search, Danny McCabe was appointed Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation at Adelphi in July 2013 by former Adelphi University President Dr. Robert A. Scott.

In his first two years at the helm of the athletics department, the Panthers continued to set a standard of excellence in the Northeast-10 Conference, winning the school’s second consecutive Presidents’ Cup in 2013-14 before finishing second in 2014-15. In that time, Adelphi claimed seven NE10 Championships, sent 15 teams to NCAA Tournament play and claimed two NCAA National Championships in women’s lacrosse. In 2015, the softball team reached the Women’s College World Series for the first time as a Division II program, winning the NCAA Division II East 2 Regional on Janet L. Ficke Field before sweeping the Super Regional on the campus of top-seeded Southern New Hampshire.

McCabe has been instrumental in creating several new positions in the department, beginning with the addition of a varsity women’s golf program and the hiring of Keith Ferrara as the first full-time strength and conditioning coach. In addition, the department created a new strength and conditioning center inside the Center for Recreation and Sports which features all the amenities required for a first-class program.
