The aim of this project is to demonstrate skill acquisition in representational tools and techniques relevant to contemporary design practices. This project sets out a number of discipline specific working strategies for the investigation and representation of design ideas. Here we are asked to take three different journeys around the city and explore the different findings. Then we are asked to dismantle the findings and extract ideas from it in order to come up with different models. Then we are to chose one and resent it in cotext by the use of renders and technical drawings.

8 Journeys have been undertaken along The Terrace, Lambton Quay and Willis street in order to fulfil the breif of exploring, which is then used to create iterations of models before going on to influence the final design

Here we explore the linearity of the buildings on our journey. Study shows that there is a strong case of horizontal lines on the buildings’ facade and could be extracted and used in the model derived from this series. The large scale of the building compliments the thickness of the horizontal lines which could be used to determine the scale of the model. Materials such as metal, concrete and glass are mostly used on this series, indicating strength and durability.

In the second journey we investigate the the entrances of buildings on a medium scale. Here we see that the frames are mostly thin and again mostly follow the linear pattern that this project is investigating. Metal and glass are again materials that are found in each entrance and are used to create an enclosed space something that can be explored in the model from this series.

In this series we explore the linear formations of bike frame at a small scale. Study shows that the lines interlock with eachother, creating a delicate yet strong frame. Again, metal is mostly used in this series and can also be explored in the model that is designed from the analysis of this series.

These digital models have been designed by taking ideas from the analysis of the three journeys undertaken around Wellington city. The first three have been constructed using sketchup, with the second and third row been done in Rhinoceros and then finally being rendered in clay using the 3D Studio Max software.

This is the final model that has been chosen from the different iterations in the previous step. The first photo is a daylight clay render and the second shows materiality. The material chosen for this model is steele. The reson for this is that it best replicates the study that it was derived from and also gives the stucture a sense of elegance as well as strength. Here we can also see the scale of the model, which is quite large and hollow, allowing people to walk through the stucture and experience the feeling on linear domination.

Here we see the technical drawings for the final model, which includes the plan and different elevations, as well as the section cuts of the model. This also includes the dimentions of the stucture and the lines in the drawing that were purposly left there to show the different dents, mountains and valleys that the model has.

This is the net of the model that will be made. This net has been developed using the pepekura software and will be used to create the template for my model which will then be cut out and built.

This is the physical model of the stucture made from a thick card and using the net that was created in the previous step. Here we can see the plan of the stucture, along with its elevations and also some detail shots of the model. Miniature people have been inserted to show scale and relevance of the stucture and a brown background the clay renders done in the previous stages.
