Achieving a healthy lifespan
DinkarrayMapndaliya
One may be surprised to know that life expectancy in India was only 35 years, just 75 years ago, and has doubledto68yearsbynow. Thisis achieved by advances in medical research, bettercontrolofinfectious diseases like smallpox and tuberculosis, improved sanitation, better control over famines and malnutrition, declining infant and child mortality, safe drinking water, and better access to medical treatments and medications. Much needstobedone. However, asfaras life span is concerned, India is not farbehinddevelopednations.
Although life expectancy has increased and people live longer, this is not necessarily a healthy life. Along witha longlifespan, diseases
like cancer, stroke, diabetes, and arthritis have increased. A significant number of people of higher ages require help with daily activities. With the advancement of technology, the requirement for manual work has decreased, and there is a shift from an active life to a sedentary lifestyle. In cities, many people work in the office on chairs. They do not compensate by exercise, running, or walking. Time spent on the phone and TV has increased.Obesityisnotconsidered evil. On the contrary, such people are considered healthier in India. People are becoming lazy; they eat and sit watching TV or the Internet. Thisisasortofaddiction, likeadrug addiction. Dancy and Harold D’Souza invited as Keynote Speakers to IWC’s International Women’s Day:
“WhenWomenRise,MenShine, and the World Thrives!” These words from Harold D’Souza, a globally renowned inspirational speaker, set the tone for an unforgettable evening at the Indian Women Collaboration (IWC) International Women’s Day celebration in Columbus,Ohio,onMarch16,2025. In a historic first, IWC broke
tradition by inviting a male keynote speaker—Harold D’Souza— alongside his wife, Dancy D’Souza, to address a jam-packed audience of 200 incredible women on the critical issue of human trafficking awareness, prevention, and empowerment.
A Story of Strength, Survival & FamilyBonding
“WhencoupleslikeHarold &Dancy D’Souza STAND together, no storm, tsunami, struggles, stigma,
suffering, sorrows, or sadness can suppress their kids’ lives.” These words carried deep meaning as the D’Souza’s recounted their painful past of being trafficked while their sons, Bradly and Rohan, were just 7 and 4 years old. Their journey from victims to victors moved the audiencetotears—tearsoftragedy, trauma, andultimately, triumph.

Harold D’Souza expanded on this theme by introducing his book, “Frog in a Well – Turning Obstacles into Opportunities”, available on Amazon, which narrates his personal journey from slavery to success. He emphasized four key takeaways from their family’s story:Be happy, think positive, never quit andbelieve in yourself.
A Groundbreaking Moment for IWC
Founded by Sheetal Patel Parikh, IWC’s vision is to Care, Share & Connect, providing a platform for Indian-origin women to uplift one another and celebrate their achievements. This year’s focus on humantraffickingwasmonumental, and by welcoming Harold D’Souza as their first-ever male keynote speaker, IWC underscored that empowermentknowsnogender.
“Empowering women is not just about uplifting them; it’s about educating and engaging men as allies in the fight for justice,” said Sheetal Patel Parikh. “Harold’s presence at this event shattered
barriers and proved that when men stand alongside women, the world trulythrives.”
Empowering the Audience with Knowledge&Faith
Harold D’Souza shared critical insights on recognizing red flags, identifying problems, finding solutions, and accessing resources. He urged attendees to save the Ohio State Human Trafficking Hotline (844-363-6448) and the National Hotline (1-888-3737888) a crucial step in protecting thevulnerable.
Dancy D’Souza spoke about Eyes Open International, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit she and Harold founded to empower victims to become survivors. Gratitude
What is Gratitude to you, take a moment to evaluate
Does it begin with your breath and the moment you awake
Or with the clothes you wear and the bed you left so warm
Did you count how safe you were from the elements and the wild
No doubt these thoughts hardly come to mind if all you do is despair
Take a breath and stop a moment to evaluate your day
Remember those who long to have the opportunities you enjoy
And get off your pity pot and change your attitude
What is Gratitude to you, wake up before you it slips away
Don't wait to retire and enjoy the views, your vision may not be there
Start from the moment you get in your car, and thank this amazing machine
Don't sweat the traffic, it's a choice you made when you started out this late
Stop whining and swearing as that's what the universe will return
You know this much that we're energy so how hard it is that to understand
Even if maths is not your subject, common sense is cheap
So, take a cup of kindness and share it as you go, it's promised to return to you before your day is through

In the Bible there are two versions of the creation of humankind. I have taken the quotations from the New Revised Standard Version Catholic Bible.
Version1:
So, God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he createdthem.(Genesis1:27).Thisis thepriestlyversion.
Version2:
Then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathedintohisnostrilsthebreath oflife;andthemanbecamealiving being. The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. Then the Lord God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make himahelperashispartner."So,the LordGodcausedadeepsleeptofall upontheman, andheslept;thenhe took one of his ribs and closed its placewithflesh.Andtheribthatthe
Lord God had taken from the man hemadeintoawomanandbrought hertotheman.(Genesis2:7,15,18, 21-22).ThisistheYahwistversion.
Inversion 1,it is crystal clear that
God created man and woman simultaneously in his own image. Hence, men and women are equal partners.
In the version 2, God creates man firstandthencreatesawomanfrom the rib of the man. My interpretation of this story is as follows. God could have taken a bone from the head of the man to create a woman. He didn't do it because then the woman would be superior to man and the crown of
man.Goddidnottakeabonefrom the feet of the man. He didn't do it because then the woman would havebeeninferiortomanandslave of man. Instead, God took one of the ribs to create the woman to symbolize that the woman is the equalpartnerofman. The second version is a story to teach the ultimate truth. It cannot betakenliterally.Becauseifwetake itliterally, menshouldhaveoneless rib.Butthisisnottrue.Theaverage human male has 12 pairsof ribs, or 24 ribs in total. This is the same number of ribs that the average human female has. The idea that menhavefewerribsthanwomenis acommonmisconception. Somepeoplearebornwithmoreor fewerthanthetypical24ribs.
As we celebratethe International
Women's Day, men and women mustrespectallwomen.Attimes,in the Indian context, women are the worst enemies of women due to jealousy, hatred, inferioritycomplex, and other factors. For example, in SouthIndiaIhaveobserved, whena woman boards a crowded bus with ababy, usuallyamanwillgetupand offer her his seat. But so far, I have notseengirlsandwomendoingthe same!?Apointtoponder.
Let us celebrate Women’s Day by respectingthem.
