he year 2014 has drawn to a close and leaves with memories that will be cherished in times to come. The year brought in a lot good things in the world of Konkani poetry. The poetic horizons expanded and slowly but surely the younger generation has begun understand and enjoy Konkani poetry. As the Kavita Trust is hosting the ninth edition of Kavita Fest in Barkur on January 11, 2015 a look back on the last year’s activities is but necessary. The total programmes organized by Kavita Trust have reached 98 and the year that has just passed had 13 programmes. n Kavita Fest- 2014 (12/01/2014) The eighth edition of Kavita Fest was celebrated in Town Hall Mangalore. It was held in association of Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation and Department of Kannada and Culture, Govt. of Karnataka. The inaugural ceremony in the morning had, well known Kannada writer Vivek Shanbhag as the chief guest and Basti Vaman Shenoy was the guest of honour.

and Anant Amembal as guests. A discussion was held on the subject “Poetry and Freedom of Expression” and Vivek Shanbhag, Antony Barkur and Jerry Rasquinha presented their thoughts.

Youth poetry reciting competition was held in the morning session. Amlin D’Souza, Sushmita Pai Kane, Goa and Jaison Sequeira won the first, second and third prizes respectively. In the afternoon, Maurice and Benedicta D'Souza memorial multi-lingual poetry session was held with Sanjeev Verenkar presiding the session. Prakash Parienkar, Rajashree Sail, Ronald Sequeira, M.P. Rodrigues, Balakrishna Mallya Kochi, Suvarna Gaad Honnavar, Samiullah Bermaver Bhatkal, Mohammed Baddur, Radhakrishna K. and Shamsheer Budoli recited their poems.

n Triveni Kavya Sangam (22/2/2014) Triveni Sangam an interactive poetry programme was held in Orchid Art Gallery Balmatta. Nutan Sakhardande, Nayana Adarkar and Maya Kharangate, three poetesses from Goa participated as Anwesha Singbal anchored the programme.

Suresh Baliga, Smitha Shenoy, H.M. Pernal and Flavia Albuquerque presented their poems. In the beginning of the programme an interactive session was held between Melvyn Rodrigues and Guru Baliga on poetry. The programme was held with assistance from Suresh Baliga and Tukaram Poojary of Tulu Studies Center.

n Brahmavar Poetry Session (8/6/2014) Brahmavar Poetry Session was held at the residence of Ravi Prakash and Jyothi Gonsalves. Claudy Brahmavar presided the session.

Steevan Lewis, Edwin D'Silva, Melvyn Rodrigues, Antony Barkur, Melwyn Kolalgiri, Eric Soans, Kishoo Barkur, Elston D'Souza presented their poems. Melvyn Rodrigues interacted with Antony Barkur on his poetry.

n Bangalore Poetry Session (22/6/2014) State Capital Bangalore played host to the poetry session at Sadbhavana auditorium of the Carmelite Fathers. Maxim Lobo welcomed the gathering and Melvyn Rodrigues talked about poetry. Antony Barkur conducted the poetry session and Indu Gerasappe, Olivera Flavia, Vinod Colaco, Melvyn Rodrigues and Maxim Lobo recited their poems. n James and Shobha Mendonca Endowment Lecture on Poetry (12/7/2014) Renowned poet and writer Jerry Pinto delivered the James and Shobha Mendonca Endowment Lecture on Poetry, at the SDM P.G. Centre for Management Studies Mangalore.

Nazareth,‘Gandhichem Porzollik Fuddarponn’ published by Kavita Trust was released in Mangalore on the occasion of centenary celebrations of Catholic Association South Kanara. Bishop of Mangalore Aloysius Paul D’ Souza released the book.

Eric Gonsalves, Dr Derek Lobo, Capt. John Prasad Menezes, Melvyn Rodrigues were present on the occasion. JV Carlo did the translation in Konkani.

n Poetry Reciting Competition – Udupi Round (21/9/2014) Udupi round of the poetry reciting competition was held in Udupi Don Bosco Hall in association with ‘Uzwad’ Konkani Monthly. 12 youth recited poems in the competition. Melvyn Rodrigues welcomed the participants and Fr Chetan Lobo proposed the vote of thanks.

n Poetry Reciting Competition – Karkal Round (28/9/2014) The Karkal round of the reciting competition was held in Christ King church hall in association with ‘Uzwad’ Konkani Monthly. The competition was held for children aged below 15 years. 5 children participated in the competition and 3 youth recited poems for youth competition.

The trustees of the Kavita Trust were judges in all of competitions.
