make a copy and set up a “library type” system so that those who do not have email can check out the issue and read it and return it for another club member to read. There are always ways to make the necessary changes that are happening in Lionism and life.

Greetings to All! Our 2014 State Convention is now over and from the many comments that have been spoken or written it was a great and successful convention. My hat is off to PDG Judy Tapper and her committee for working so hard and giving us a great weekend in Lisle. There were some changes to formats this year and they were very well accepted.

It has been a great honor to serve this 2013-2014 year as the Council Chair for MD 1. I strived each day to represent all the Lions, Lionesses and Leos of this great state to the best of my ability and keep their best interest in mind. Yes, I had some opposition to me in this position, and at times I struggled to understand why there was such strong opposition and I thank those who were willing to let me call and talk things out with them. However, for the most part I had great encouragement from so many others that I knew that I would come out on top. I am so very thankful for the opportunity to FOLLOW MY DREAM and I thank everyone who truly supported and encouraged me during this year.

I want to say a personal THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to attend the convention. We also thank PIP Jimmy and Velda Ross for joining us for the weekend. It is always great to have them visit here in MD 1 and PIP Jimmy has some great words for us to listen to and absorb. I especially want to say THANK YOU to the First Timers who took the time to attend our convention and I look forward to seeing you all at conventions in the future.

MD 1 must continue to make necessary CHANGES and make a determined effort to increase our membership, to retain our members who are rapidly going out the back door, and to start new clubs. We will be hosting the 2017 International 100 Anniversary Convention and we must show the world why we are MD 1. We must CHANGE and update ourselves into the social media world to get the word out that Lions are here and we are staying here in MD 1. We must CHANGE to attract new and younger members. We must CHANGE and double our efforts to keep our members from leaving our clubs. We must CHANGE and move forward and stop the backwards movement here in MD 1. We must CHANGE and set a example to the world that Lions are the best service organization in the world. We must CHANGE and grow here in MD 1.I want to leave you with a quote from a unknown author “ Today will Never come again. Be a blessing. Be a friend. Encourage someone.

The 2013-2014 Council of Governors has worked hard this year and are still working to finish out their year knowing that they did the best that they could do in the running of the business affairs of MD 1. They worked hard at running our MD 1 like a business, no matter how much opposition came their way. We challenge the Council for 2014-2015 when they take office on July 8 in Toronto to continue this process and to not regress back into the past. We all must move forward and make the necessary changes that are required to maintain our MD 1 as a leader in Lionism. CHANGE - what a word and what meaning it has for our lives. Change happens to us everyday but it seems that no matter how we say it or what we do to make changes happen - there are always some who oppose the thought of changes happening in MD 1. Our State Magazine changed this year and is still being reworked and changed to help with the distribution of each issue. We thank PDG Austin D’Souza for taking on this task and doing a awesome job. So Cabinet Secretary’s need to change to make sure that all the clubs in their districts receive the magazine. Then Club Secretary’s need to change and be sure that eachclub member with a email address get each issue. I have heard the comment that “not all my members have emails” and my answer to this is to

Take time to care. Let your words heal and not wound.” Please take these words to heart and may God bless you all. Thank you for taking the time to Serve. In Lionism, CC Lydia Ellis 2013-2014

Editorial:

94th Annual Lions of Illinois State Convention

Are We Doing the Right Thing? Lions world over held their elections – in their Clubs, Districts, Multiple Districts and will be soon at International level to elect and select leaders to lead their Lionistic geographical areas. How many of us can say boldly that we did the right thing in selecting leaders?

Our Annual Convention is now history. We had over 395 attendees, including guests, Leos, Lioness and children. The comments were great, the food was great and the hotel was great!

As usual, we had our own agenda in selecting leaders; we had our own selection based on our friendship, based on our own clicks and groups; and based on NOT WHAT THE CANDIDATES KNOW; BUT WHO THEY KNOW!

The hotel staff went out of their way to be sure we had everything we needed, including coffee Saturday morning in the Silent Auction area and tea and lemonade Friday afternoon, along with cookies.

This is what spoils Lionism in this entire world; at our Club level; District level, Multiple District level and International level. Even though we are a group of Humanitarian Volunteers, we bring some selfish politics in our dealings and make things worse.

We want to thank all of you who provided items for the Silent Auction. We made over $1400. We also made over $400 at the live auction Sunday morning, both of which will go to pay for the refreshments on Friday and Saturday. It takes a lot of Lions to make a successful convention and once again you all stepped forward to make this year’s convention work.

I must say that this is one of the reasons we are losing members due to power hungry people. I know it happens everywhere in our daily lives – at work, in our churches, schools, state, local and national government level too.

I want to give a special thank you to the following people:

Hurting someone is very easy with our careless acts of selfishness; however, bringing back that enthusiasm, energy, power and volunteerism is somewhat very hard to achieve. Let us do one thing – as we brag our service to humanity, let us maintain our relationship with fellow members at any level and recognize their talent, knowledge, education, experience and energy while selecting leaders in our Clubs, Districts, Multiple Districts and International level. If we really need or hungry for power, let us climb the tallest tree in our neighborhood and place a chair on the upmost top branch and let us sit on it forever; nobody will bother us and seek more power than us to go higher. Once again I remind all lions in this beautiful world of ours – let us read ‘Lions Code of Ethics’ daily until we improve our character, behavior, attitude and friendship toward our fellow lions and give them valid recognition, Amen. -IPDG Austin D’Souza, Ph.D. My e-mail is: ILStateEditor@gmail.com.

Act for the benefit of everyone

Energize the organization

Develop themselves and others Empower others to lead Recognize Achievement When asked, What is Leadership? Many leaders respond with one word: ACTION. This ACTION can involve one or more of the following: moving forward, sharing vision, communicating ideas, making decisions, and celebrating success.

Thank you to the Council Members, a group that helped me put this convention together with their full support: CC Lydia Ellis, VCC Fred Peska, Council Treasurer Mario Gumino, Council Secretary Tawny Hall, DG Dave Hansen, DG Dave Wheeler, DG Mo Ritzel, DG Moe Johnson, DG Butch Guennewig, DG Molly Penny, DG Johnny Anderson, DG John Pajkos, DG Steve Frankenstein.

-Communicate your ideas. Others must understand your plans and project before they can act. The more they know and understand the better the outcome. -Just Do It! A leader makes good things happen for others and the organization, doing the best and the right thing for all.

This is just a few of the people who made this convention work. I apologize for anyone’s name that I have left off this list, your help was greatly appreciated.

-Set the Example. Get out among your club members or other clubs in your district. Get to know others. Solve problems with input from others. Walk the talk.

I look forward to seeing you all in Effingham for the 95th Annual State Convention.

-Manage things. Lead People. -Lion Judy Tapper, -Make decisions. Be timely. Be thoughtful. Remember not deciding is to decide.

State Convention Chairperson, 2013-2014.

MD1 Leadership Column:

-Solve problems. Look at all possible outcomes and consider the “what if” of each outcome. Make the best choice.

This is the third article in a series based on the writings of John Baldoni. In his handbook 180 Ways to Walk the Leadership Talk, he identifies six important behaviors that all leaders do. We have already considered listening and learning from others as well as energizing the organization. This month we will consider Acting for the Benefit of Everyone:

-Avoid the Blame Game. Look for solutions, not a scapegoat. -Be a champion for your team. Get them what is needed to do a good job. Address concerns quickly. -Manage crisis. If things are in chaos, take a minute to “cool down”. Assess and make the best possible decision with the information available. -Earn Loyalty. Treat people the way you want to be treated. Show respect. Share in the jobs no one else wants to do. -Solve disputes by seeking a win-win situation. Both parties need to leave feeling they have left the discussion with something, no loser.

-Be Pro-Active. Look for roadblocks to change and act upon them. Get others’ opinions. Be relevant to your club and community.

tional Convention Chairperson as two additional positions eligible for reimbursement of expenses for attending the International Convention.

-Manage your Time. There are only 24 hours in the day. Use it well.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT Section 1, paragraph 3, of Article IX of the Lions of Illinois Constitution entitled State Revenue, be amended, effective at the close of the 2014 State Convention, by adding the phrasing marked in bold below:

-Change is constant, except for ideas such as honor, truth, integrity, and love, which remain constant. -Admit your mistakes. No one can be right all of the time. Accept it, apologize sincerely, and learn from it.

One Dollar and Fifty Cents ($1.50) per capita of said fund shall be available for use for this State’s participation in the International Convention. Expenses of each out-going District Governor, incoming Council Chairperson, and out-going International Convention Chairperson, in connection with his/her attending the International Convention at or near the conclusion of his/her term of office shall be considered a proper charge against this International Convention Fund and reimbursement for said expenses of such outgoing District Governors, incoming Council Chairperson, and outgoing International Convention Chairperson, out of this fund shall be on the same basis as that allowed District Governors Elect under the Rules of Audit of and by Lions Clubs International.

-Map your Action Plan. *Establish the vision, so everyone knows where you want to go. *Articulate the strategies. Be sure people know how you will get there. *Identify the benchmarks. Demonstrate how they will know when they are there and celebrate the accomplishment of getting there. *Provide a flexible way for continuous feedback. Get input from others. -Get Personal. US$500,000. This $500,000 pledge by the Oswal family follows the largest personal donation given to LCIF (also by the Oswal family) of $6 million. Their most recent generous act resulted in the Lions of the world contributing $870,000 in April towards the Measles Initiative, allowing for their pledge of $500,000 to be added, totaling $1.37 million being raised during the month for measles. With the matching gift from the GAVI Alliance, the total money raised during the month of April for measles was $2.74 million! These donations will help save four times the number of children from the potentially devastating effects of measles. In addition, donations were eligible for Melvin Jones Fellowship credit.

Measles Initiative Takes on Another Level Through our partnership with Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) Alliance, Lions have committed to raising US$30 million by our 100th anniversary in 2017 towards the fight to eliminate measles. The funds raised by Lions will be matched through the GAVI Matching Fund, which is financially supported by the United Kingdom's Department for International Development (DFID) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, bringing the total to US$60 million. Through our joint efforts with GAVI and other partners, we will help immunize more than 114 million children and increase access to quality immunization services to benefit children throughout the world.

Please keep the Measles Initiative in mind when making your gift to LCIF. Every dollar received will help protect a child from the devastating effects of measles.

World Immunization Week was April 23-30, 2014. In celebration of World Immunization Week and the Lions efforts around the world to eliminate measles, all donations made for measles during the month of April were matched dollar for dollar by Lion Aruna Oswal of India, and her family, up to a total gift of -PID Bud Wahl, MD1 LCIF Chair

esting and informative. It is always a great experience to hear what the other districts are doing for those that we serve.

Travels With the ID Bill McKinney

In February we also were invited to the District Convention of 26M1 in Missouri and truly enjoyed our time with those hard working Lions. Then later in the month we headed to San Diego to attend the International Board of Directors meeting. We once again had our hearts touched by the activities that we as spouses and partners attended. Thevision screening event that we went to really showed me what a group of hard working Lions and volunteers can do in a day in dispensing hundreds of pairs of eyeglasses. Those who were being examined were so patient with the wait time. Upon our return home from the International Convention in Hamburg, Germany we began to visit various clubs and districts here in MD 1. In August, ID Bill went to Lions International in Oak Brook for a training session of all the newly elected ID’s. Several of them attended a Lions meeting at the invitation of PDG Jim Addington and enjoyed the evening. ID Bill traveled from Oak Brook to Rockford to attend a dinner where 1 VP Joe Preston was speaking.

In March, 2014 we attended District 1-CS district convention and enjoyed seeing our many friends there. March also found us traveling to District 43Y in Kentucky and what a great time we had with them. ID Bill and I received a very warm welcome and made many new friends. ID Bill and I were both honored by being named Kentucky Colonels in recognition of our service to Lions. We were also named honorary citizens of Hazard, Kentucky and were made a Duke and Duchess of the city of Hazard. We were touched by these great honors.

November, 2013 we attended the MD 1 Forum in Normal, Illinois and got to thank many who helped with our campaign and election in Hamburg. In November we also attended the Altamont Lions club meeting and the Governors night in Carmi. We also stayed busy with other events and meetings throughout the State.

March also found us traveling to 14 U in Pennsylvania for their district convention and again we made many new friends in Lions. We also go to meet some of the other District Governors who attended the convention. We enjoyed our time with these dedicated Lions and had a great trip - we even had to have the plane deiced before we could fly home.

December, 2013 we spent the holiday season with family and many friends. We also hosted our annual Christmas open house and enjoyed the time of fellowship with the many who attended.

It is a great honor to be representing the Lions, Lioness and Leos of the world as a part of the International Board of Directors. Thank you all once again for choosing us to serve.

January, 2014 we attended the Altamont Lions Club 75 Anniversary and enjoyed the evening with everyone. We also attended our Lions meetings and the Council of Governors meeting later in the month.

To be continued..... -ID Partner in Service, Lydia

February, 2014 we attended 1-J and 1-G district cabinet meetings and found them to be very inter-

Ashton Lions “Do The Right Thing” At the May 21, 2014 meeting of the Ashton Lions Club, our guest speaker was Dana Brosso and her student, Megan Cheatham. Dana teaches the visually impaired at the Ashton (AFC) and Amboy schools and Megan has been her student at AFC for the past 4 years. This fall Megan will be transferring to the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired in Jacksonville. Three years ago, AFC grant money was made available for Dana to purchase an Apple iPad. The Apple iPad was the choice product because it has specific built-in accessibility features which are specifically designed for users with visual impairments and can be used with a Braille device. Megan has become quite proficient using her Apple iPad. The iPad helps Megan manage and complete tasks at school and home. She uses her iPad to access Email and the Internet; to organize her appointments and homework assignments; and to dictate her notes and assignments using a dictation app. Megan can download and access textbooks and/or reading materials independently using the apps that were installed for her. The books can be read using VoiceOver or her Braille display. This method provides Megan with both an auditory and tactile media for accessing the same books as her peers. The screen provides a visual display for her peers and teachers to observe what she is doing and where she is on her document. There is a specific app called AccessNote which was created by the American Foundation for the Blind to work specifically with VoiceOver to access and create typed documents using Braille commands and a keyboard. In other words, when Megan creates the written word on her Braille display, the iPad (using a wireless connection) converts the Braille to a written display for her teachers and peers, as well as provides the word in an oral format. Thus the need to transcribe the Braille into an accessible format for others to read has been eliminated. The Apple iPad goes beyond Braille—everyone can read her written word. Once Megan has completed her education, the iPad will continue to help Megan with her day-to-day life skills and in her vocational setting. Megan told the club she wants to become a teacher for the visually impaired.

to take it with her to ISVI this fall. Dana presented an overview of the Apple iPad and gave specific details in how it has been helping Megan with her education, and then Megan demonstrated how all the programs work in conjunction with her Braille display. Without hesitation, the Ashton Lions unanimously decided to help Megan with her need for an iPad and donated the necessary funds for Megan to purchase a new Apple iPad of her own and the Apps she will need (Bookshare, AccessNote, Splashtop, and Splasm Checkbook).
