Govt, MCC urged to name road from Kadri Park to Lalbagh after George Fernandes Daijiworld Media Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, May 6: Richard Moras, convener of Konkan Lekhak Sangh, Karnataka on Friday May 6 urged the state government and the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to name the main road from Kadri Park to Lalbagh

after George Fernandes. Addressing a press meet at the press club here, Richard Moras said, “We are thankful to the central government and the Prime Minister for conferring ‘Padma Vibhushan’ on him posthumously for his monolithic achievements as national leader. There is a saying that great leaders are not rightly honoured in their native place. But let it not happen in the case of George Fernandes who was born in Bejai, Mangaluru and extended his scope of work to the

whole of India.” He also informed that a delegation will visit the MCC urging the city corporation to name the Kadri Park to Lalbagh road in the name of George Fernandes in the coming days. Titus Noronha, Konkani poet and activist, Divakar K, former mayor of MCC, Ronald Gomes, former district governor, Lions Club International, and William Pais, author and columnist were present. About George Fernandes George Fernandes was born on June 3, 1930 in Bejai, Mangaluru as the eldest son of six children of John Joseph Fernandes & Alice Martha Fernandes. He rose to prominence as a household name in India for his dedicated and committed service to downtrodden poor and weaker sections of society. Influenced by socialist ideology he moved to Mumbai and emerged as a trade union leader. His mission to organize unions for workers, and to address their problems and grievances as a leader and mentor is exemplary. He served as a member of Bombay Municipal Corporation from 1961 to 1968.

George was a hero for the poor masses, vehemently fought for their rights, leading protests, and shutdowns for which he was jailed many times. In 1974, he called the strike of 1.4 million railway workers and brought the service to a halt in whole of India which no other union leader has done. Social welfare of all was the criterion and he consistently fought for it with unwavering credibility. From 1967 to 2004 he has won 9 Lok Sabha elections which depict his immense popularity as a national leader of repute. He despised corruption & nepotism, dynasty, dictatorial acts, and communalism of any kind. He fought against the draconian emergency reflecting

18 Veez Illustrated Weekly

dictatorship which has left indelible stains on the walls of the Indian parliament. George Fernandes held prominent positions in the Union cabinet as Minister of communications, Industry, Railways & Defence and judiciously handled the responsibilities with integrity. As Industry minister in Prime Minister Morarji Desai cabinet, he forced Coca Cola and IBM out of India which is characteristic of his nationalism and patriotism. He is the architect of Konkan Railway which is the second-largest railway network in Asia. The grit, determination and visionary zeal in planning and executing the project is commendable. As defence minister he deftly handled the Kargil War. Pokhran II Nuclear test during his tenure as Defence Minister is yet another feather in his cap of credentials. He often used to visit defence forces and used to spend time with them listening to their necessities & grievances. He paid a record 32 visits to the world’s highest battlefield at Siachen glacier. He also directed bureaucrats to visit desert posts when

the temperature is very high & freezing cold in winter to understand the genuine problems which soldiers face. George provided the soldiers with snow scooters for the first time when he was the defence minister. George was a powerful orator who could convert the parliament into pindrop silence with his prolific speeches on various subjects. -----------------------------------------

Shor in Mumbai: respite from loudspeakers in religious places (Philip Mudartha) The political slugfest in Maharashtra:

The rivalry between the Thackeray cousins has resulted in an unintended result of the removal of loudspeakers from mosques and temples in Mumbai without discrimination. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray had threatened to play Hanuman Chalisa in front of mosques at double the volume of Azaan if his cousin and Chief Minister Uddav Thackeray of the Shiv Sena does not order the removal of loudspeakers from

mosques by Wednesday, 4th May 2022, a day after the Eid festival. The loud speakers on Mosque Minarets:

Stepping up his attack on the ruling Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, Raj Thackeray tweeted an old video of late Sena founder Bal Thackeray in which the latter was seen saying the day his party comes to power, praying of namaz on roads will be stopped and loudspeakers from mosques will be removed. A majority of the mosques put the loudspeakers off on 4th May onwards during the Azaan calls. However, Raj Thackeray insisted that the campaign against the loudspeakers would continue. He pointed out that as per the Supreme Court guidelines use of loudspeakers is prohibited between 10 pm to 6 am.

20 Veez Illustrated Weekly

“In Mumbai, there are 1,140 mosques of which 135 did not heed our ultimatum and broadcast Azaan over the loudspeakers on Wednesday morning.” Raj Thackeray claimed. However, Shiv Sena spokesperson asserted that only those mosques with official permission were using the loudspeakers in compliance with the laws. “Maharashtra has a Thackeray government. Even if the state has a Maha Vikas Aghadi government, it is helmed by Uddav Thackeray. He is the Sena chief, son of Hinduhriday Samrat Bal Thackeray. So, he doesn't have to take advice on praying on roads during namaz and illegal loudspeakers on masjids.” Shiv Sena editorialized. The authorized and unauthorized temples: On the other hand, loudspeakers at mosques are not the only source of noise pollution in the city. Out of 2,400 authorized temples in Mumbai, only 24 have permission to use loudspeakers on their premises, as per Mumbai police records. Then

there are thousands of “unauthorized” temples at street corners and under “Peepal Trees” along city lanes.

In addition to noise pollution, these street corner temples cause massive traffic jams when devotees gather in large numbers to pray at these unauthorized temples during local festivals. Right-wing politicians demanding ban on offering namaz on roads are silent on these “makeshift street temples”. "Law is equal for all and we have asked religious places to obtain permission to play loudspeakers," the Mumbai Police Commissioner said, “permission to use loudspeakers will be given in accordance with Noise Pollution (Regulation & Control) Rules-2000 and relevant Supreme Court Orders”.

21 Veez Illustrated Weekly

Supreme Court judgment of 2005: The Supreme Court had banned the use of loudspeakers and music systems in public places between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. (except in cases of public emergencies) in July 2005, citing the serious effects of noise pollution on the health of those who live in such areas. The apex court noted that states shall make provision for seizure and confiscation of loudspeakers, amplifiers and such other equipment as are found to be creating noise beyond the permissible limits. Various High Courts have also issued orders prohibiting the use of loudspeakers and disturb social peace. In July 2014, the Bombay High Court directed the police to remove loudspeakers from those mosques in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai that have not obtained required permissions for them from the authorities. Again, in August 2016, the Bombay High Court ruled that

the use of loudspeakers was not a fundamental right. It said that no religion or sect could claim that the right to use a loudspeaker or public address system was a fundamental right guaranteed by Article 25 of the Indian Constitution. In January 2021, the Karnataka High Court directed the state government to direct the police and Karnataka State Pollution Control Board to take action as per the Supreme Court’s directions and noise pollution rules, against the illegal use of loudspeakers at religious places. It went a step further and sought to the use of loudspeakers by political parties, public celebrations of religious festivals, weddings and other parties and also noise from horns in residential areas. Is a national policy needed? Due to the increasing political noise over the use of loudspeakers at religious institutions, especially against loudspeakers used at mosques, Shiv Sena demanded that the Union government come out

22 Veez Illustrated Weekly

with a national policy on the use of loudspeakers, and implement it in BJP-ruled states first.

In Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, public Ganesh Chaturthi celebration pandals are a common sight. Bollywood songs are blared nonstop in these pandals, besides aarti at designated hours during day and night hours. The noise pollution due to crackers during Deepavali is another major irritant. In the past two years, these Hindu festivals were not publicly celebrated thanks to the COVID protocols. The public were spared the annual ordeals. It is hoped that sooner or later the police and pollution control boards crack the whip and implement existing laws. Sound is measured by decibels. The decibel (abbreviated dB) is a unit used to measure the intensity of a

sound. On the decibel scale, silence is 0 dB. A sound 10 times more powerful is 10 dB. A sound 100 times more powerful is 20 dB. A sound 1,000 times more powerful is 30 dB and so on. A scale such as this is known as a logarithmic scale. A normal conversation is 60 - 70 db. So, 68 dB is a normal conversation level. A safe or acceptable noise level for constant exposure is 68 dB or below. Hearing damage can occur when exposed to a constant background noise of 80 - 90 dB. City traffic is typically 85 dB. Sound levels above 125 dB will cause pain in the ear and one must wear hearing protection to prevent hearing loss. It is advisable to use sound mufflers whenever sound exceeds 80dB. A jet engine at 100 feet is 140 dB. Hence, must wear protection while working in high sound environment such as airport tarmacs. Most

advanced countries prohibit night landings and taking of flights from their airports. These airports do not permit operations between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. However, a third world city like Mumbai allows almost all international flights to land and take off during the night with scant regard to the affected residential neighborhoods.

pollution; theirs is only anti-Muslim rhetoric. **** The Mumbai police said among the 2,400-odd temples, only 24 have obtained permission to use loudspeakers, while 950 out of the 1,140 mosques have received approval from authorities to use the device. As per statistics available.

Our politicians are least bothered about prevention of real noise ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Modern Popular Alternative Medical Care

HOMEOPATHY

-Compiled : Ivan Saldanha-Shet.

Homeopathy was conceived in the year 1796 by the German physician Dr Samuel Hahnemann (1755 1843). Homeopathy achieved its greatest popularity in the 19th century. Throughout the 19th century, homeopathic institutions appeared in Europe and the United

States and were popular in India and in Mangalore too . Homeopathy rose to success, as there existed a subtle feeling that other forms of treatment could be harmful to the human body. During the 1970s, homeopathy made a significant break with sales of homeopathic products increasing by leaps and bounds. The trend corresponded with the rise of the New Age movement and may be in part due to chemophobia (fear of Chemicals) and irrational preference for "natural" products, and the concern homeopathic practitioners provided with friendly interaction. Homeopathy is the longest established alternative medicine from Europe, founder Dr. Hahnemann rejected the mainstream medicine of the late 18th century as irrational, crude and harsh. He advocated the use of single drugs at low doses and

25 Veez Illustrated Weekly

promoted an immaterial, vitalistic view of how living organism’s function. The term homeopathy was coined by Hahnemann (a system of medical practice that treats a disease especially by the administration of minute doses of a remedy that would in larger amounts produce in healthy persons symptoms similar to those of the disease) and first appeared in print in 1807. He also coined the expression "allopathic medicine", which was used to pejoratively refer to traditional Western medicine. Homeopathy in India :

Homeopathy is a distinct medical specialty being practiced across the world and it is a recognized medical

system in India through the Homeopathy Central Council Act, 1973. The system has blended well into the ethos and traditions of the country that it has been recognized as one of the national systems of medicine. Homeopathy was introduced in India in the early 19th century. It flourished in Bengal at first, and then spread all over India. In the beginning, the system was extensively practiced by amateurs in the civil and military services and others. Mahendra Lal Sircar was the first Indian who became a homeopathic physician. A number of allopathic doctors started homeopathic practice following Sircar's lead. The Calcutta Homeopathic Medical College, the first homeopathic medical college was established in 1881. This institution took on a major role in popularizing homeopathy in India. In 1973, the Government of India recognized homeopathy as one of the national systems of medicine and set up the Central Council of Homeopathy (CCH) to regulate its education and practice. Now, only

26 Veez Illustrated Weekly

qualified registered homeopaths can practice homeopathy in India. At present, in India, homeopathy is the third most popular method of medical treatment after allopathy and Ayurveda. There are over 200,000 registered homeopathic doctors currently, with approximately 12,000 more being added every year. Homeopathy is popular now in at least 65 countries and recognized as the 2nd largest medical system in the world by WHO - World Health Organization. Homeopathy as a science of medical treatment has a philosophy of its own and based on certain fundamental principles which are quite unique and different from those of other forms l of modern medical sciences. Homeopathy is one of the most popular medical systems in India. It is one of the Medicine systems in the AYUSH - 'Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy. The Homeopathic system of medicine is safe and based on the individual, it is based

on holistic, total and individualistic mode and the ethical and legal basics forms the cornerstone of homeopathic practice. The World Homeopathy Day is celebrated every year on April 10 to pay tribute to Homeopathy and its contribution to the world of medicine. The day is observed on the occasion of the birth anniversary of German physician Dr Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of Homeopathy - 2022 was the 267th birth anniversary of Dr Hahnemann.

Homeopathy & Mangalore : The historicity Mangalore connects frequently with the name Rev Fr Augustus Muller, an early German Jesuit, in the year 1878, with coJesuits from Venice he landed here to start education centres, he happened to be a visionary Homeopath. Rev Fr Augustus

27 Veez Illustrated Weekly

Muller teaching in the newly started Aloysius College, dispensed Homeopathic medicines for a variety of ailments, sitting regularly under a huge banyan tree that can still be seen near the college on the famous 'Lighthouse" hill in the city center of Mangalore. The noble hearted Fr Muller had brought a chest of Homeopathic medicines from Catellan, a Homeopathic firm in Paris, (much of this historic paraphernalia can be seen in "Fr.Muller's Museum" at the now super [specialty hospital). With this he devoted himself to serve the sick people who were poverty ridden, neglected and uncared for. To accommodate the growing number of patients, he shifted to Kankanady under another banyan tree and continued his mission of healing and comforting the sick through Homoeopathy. Rev Fr Augustus Muller left to his heavenly abode in 1910 leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion that his successors at Fr Muller's Institutions nurtured while constantly upgrading facilities upholding the motto ‘Heal and

comfort’. Today one can find many Homeopathic facilities and well qualified medical practitioners in Mangalore and many cities of the area. Yet, Fr, Muller's has surfaced as the leader of the pack, with an integrated Medical College, production facilities of a high caliber and a Hospital to match.

Fr Muller Homeopathic Medical College and Hospital is well located at Deralakatte, a short distance away in Mangalore, providing health service to the suffering humanity and imparting professional education to the budding Homeopaths. A Pioneer Homeopath of Mangalore

It is a difficult matter to recall many great Homeopaths of Mangalore from decades. But, the pioneer of Fr.Muller's is one who always looms large and served the sick will into retirement, till 2020, age prompted him to take a break with his daughter in Mumbai. Many, specially of older folk will recall him

and admire and appreciate him Dr.V T (Valerian Thomas) D'Souza , 1932-2021; folk visiting Mangalore for homeopathy treatment always recall a well known name, He Dr. V T. from 1959 to 1992 was chief homeo physician at Fr.Muller's Homeopathy Hospital; until 2019, Dr VT treated patients from all over at his clinic near Bendoorwell - he is legendary. One who loved this city and the people for long, had gone to Mumbai along with his wife Irene, to spend some time with his daughter in Navi Mumbai. Age and related factors in the midst of Corona did not spare him in the metro, it has played havoc with many at this time. He was 89 years, but quite fit, his mind was agile. Sadly on the morning of June 15, 2021 he suddenly collapsed and suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away peacefully. He leaves behind his beloved wife Irene D'Souza (exSyndicate Bank), and two daughters Dr.Prema Saldanha/Dr.Julian Saldanha, Shantha Martin/Dr.Alexander Martin, granddaughter Tanya Martin; and a

host of relatives, friends and well wishers all over the world and many doctors.

Brief Life : Valerian Thomas (VT) D'Souza, was born in the heart of Mangalore in October 1932. His education at St Aloysius High School and College is always recalled enthusiastically; In 1953, in the BA degree (Maths & English) Madras University, he came off with flying colours. His prowess in speaking and writing was superb, the Rector of St Aloysius College Fr E J Jacques. SJ (1949-55) , a person who would not accept a no, made young VT a lecturer in the English

faculty. In 1955. Destiny took him to the famed Calcutta Medical College & Hospital. He heartily used to say, in reality, went into Homeopathy to escape being a college professor. In Calcutta he diligently applied himself to the study of Homeopathy, his week-ends, holidays and any spare time was spent as a 'medico volunteer' with St.Mother Teresa of Kolkata in her famous humanitarian works, this gave him added exposure and skill in a systematic manner. May 1964, he married Irene Lobo from a well known family of Mangalore, Irene, an officer of the Syndicate Bank and a graduate from St Agnes College. They have two daughters. Dr V T D'Souza is deeply missed. In 1980, Dr.VT welcomed Mother Teresa at Fr Muller's, VT was surprised that she had never forgotten him and their cordial talk was noted by many. Mother Teresa presided over the Valedictory function at Fr. Muller’s Hospital on December 28, 1980. This great function of 3 hour’s duration where

31 Veez Illustrated Weekly

an estimated crowd of 5,000 was present was compered by none other than Dr.VT. The next day when he met the saint Mother Teresa in the Hospital wards, she remembered him working in her Calcutta care hospital, as a student , the inspiration and warmth between these two great old friends is always a matter of awe.

Dr V T D’Souza in February 2006 was accorded the 'Rachana' Award for Professional excellence. The citation in part : "Relentless crusade for the Cause of Homeopathy over half a Century, unique committed service in the Clinic of Mother Teresa even during studies at Calcutta. Leadership in South Kanara Homeo Medical Association as it’s President from 1959 to 1985. Rare professional excellence and valuable papers presented. The

public benefits contributed through Rotary, Public speaking and Radio, Feature writing and as a toastmaster and more……enhancing wellness of humans with knowledge of 8 languages. Commended for years of splendid service and guiding personality". Viewing Homeopaths of today : There are today very accessible doctors around us in most places qualified and dedicated, committed Homeopaths from whom we may seek medicines and treatment help for our common day to day or chronic illness, comfortably, easily

and effectively. Let us glance at the credits of one Homeopathic MD

32 Veez Illustrated Weekly

Doctor who has been in practice for at least ten years now and has gained the trust and confidence of many people and who empathizes with sick and suffering treating them with care and concern. She is, one of many Homeopaths from whom good services, healing and relief can be expected and so you too can avail such popular medical service right in the area you live and also make sure to pass on information to the sick and your needy contacts :

Holistically service oriented, professional homeopath Dr. Sr. Saritha D'Cunha BHMS MD may not be in the headlines, but like many committed medical doctors, her services, spirit and concern to mitigate human sufferings are significantly popular and trusted at all times. People flock to her, she extends the best medical care, concern and attention. Homeopathy is a very popular system of medicine the world over as we have seen above, the history of Mangaluru is epic. Review of a pathbreaking book seriously, it challenges the reader to get out of one’s complacency, comfort zone! It is a must-read and a ‘must-act-upon-now’ book!

-*Fr Cedric Prakash SJ There are books and books: some are meant to decorate bookshelves, others are read and forgotten; then there are still others, when internalised are inspirational, motivating the reader to action. ‘If Not Now, When? Disquieting Feminist Questions clearly belongs to the last category. Edited by Astrid Lobo Gajiwala, Kochurani Abraham and Prashant Olalekar SJ the anthology raises serious questions, it discomforts, it makes demands. The title says it all: disquieting feminist questions! If taken

The book is divided into three sections, all inter-related :1. Voices from the Margins 2. The Personal is Political and 3. Patriarchy, Power and the Catholic Church. Twentyfive essays, interviews and insightful articles fill the almost threehundred pages tome. The contributors belong to the entire spectrum of society: different voices but one in heart, soul and mind! In fact, all the articles merit independent reviews. The style throughout is racy, without being superficial, raising pertinent questions and simultaneously providing possible answers, the contents are provocative yet dynamically positive. For a discerning reader, it does not make for comfortable reading – it is not

35 Veez Illustrated Weekly

meant to do so- it is meant to ‘disquiet’ and it does so with brutal questions enveloped in sensitivity and finesse! Given the way clericalism and patriarchy are steeped in church and country, there will certainly some (or many?) who will not take kindly to the book. This is perhaps on expected lines! It will only go to prove the points made by the authors!

and the free sharing of the earth’s resources.”

In her ‘Editorial’, Astrid Lobo Gajiwala gives the DNA of the book,

encourage all consecrated women to discern and choose what is best for their mission in the face of the world’s challenges that we’re experiencing…I invite them to fight when, in some cases, they are treated unfairly, even within the Church; when they serve so much that they are reduced to servitude —at times, by men of the Church”.

“this collection of essays is a chorus of feminist voices who speak truth to power, reclaim suppressed spiritualties, and dare to dream and to dissent. It brings to the centre, voices from the margins, in the form of conversations (some translated from other languages) and stories of unlettered and unknown women who have paid a heavy price for refusing to be “silent spectators”. It celebrates peoples’ movements that rise against targeted attacks on the constitutional rights of the people of India; global campaigns that fight for the rights of women in the Church; and the advocacy for earth democracy that goes beyond the concerns of humans to justice for nature, protection of livelihoods,

February 2022 was a special month dedicated to religious sisters and other consecrated women in the Catholic Church. Pope Francis in a style which has come to characterise him told religious sisters in a video message to fight back when they are treated unfairly or “reduced to servitude” by men of the Church. “I

In several ways this book addresses the Pope’s challenge! In October 2021, when Prime Minister Modi visited Pope Francis, the Holy Father presented the PM, with a bronze plaque with the incisive words of Prophet Isaiah (32:15) inscribed on it and a powerful symbol engraved. No sentence from Prophet Isaiah however, is a stand-alone; the book

36 Veez Illustrated Weekly

focuses on injustices, corruption and wicked rulers. Symbolically enough in 32:9ff the Prophet says “Rise up women who are complacent, hear my voice.” The anthology of women’s voices ‘If Not Now, when?’ is in fact prophetic like Isaiah-an indictment of patriarchy both in Church and Country; a direction for women to no longer succumb to ‘tokenism’ which men hand-down so condescendingly; but for women to take their rightful and non- negotiable place in Church and Society. Given the UAPS of the Jesuits and the Synodal process begun in the Church, the anthology is a must read and a must-act-upon immediately. The book was first released on 26 April 2022, at a programme held at ‘Bagaicha’ in Ranchi where Jesuit Fr Stan Swamy lived. The programme was organised to celebrate Stan’s 85th birth anniversary. Appropriately, “This book is

dedicated to Stan Swamy SJ and all defenders of justice, freedom, equality, inclusion and diversity, especially the Bhima Koregaon activists who have taken a stand for justice without counting the cost.”.

It also contains some excellent pictures and a range of powerful quotes from Romila Thapar (“We

have to recognise the inevitability of dissent in the events that shaped our history and that are now shaping the present.”) to Arundhati Roy (“The only thing worth globalizing is dissent.”)

Fr. Jerome Stanislaus D’ Souza SJ, the President of the Jesuit Conference of South Asia (JCSA) in the ‘Foreword’ to the book writes, “I

am confident that this book will reach many hands and touch many hearts for a radical conversion and redemptive action in all, especially in those people of good will, who are committed to a life of equality, solidarity and justice. “

Given the grim reality both in the country and in the Church today - ‘If Not Now, When? Disquieting Feminist Questions’ is timely and much-needed! A direct call to listen to those voices who have the courage to ask uncomfortable questions and to do something about them! Will it ensure radical change? Perhaps that is a tall order for now! The book however, is pregnant with hope, it is path-

37 Veez Illustrated Weekly

breaking; a step forward since it pushes one to say “it is not ‘when?’ it is now!” It is a demand to live and celebrate the feminine face of God in our world today! The only question one ultimately needs to respond to, is whether one has the prophetic courage to say an unequivocal ‘yes’ to the questions raised!

St. Joseph-a man of silence and strength.

In his apostolic letter, Entitled Patris corde (“With a Father's Heart”) Pope Francis addresses St. Joseph as a “beloved father, a loving father, an accepting father; a father who is courageous, a working father, a father in the shadows.” Pope Pius XII established May 1 as feast day in 1955 to honor St.

Joseph ,the worker and celebrate the Catholic Church’s commitment to the dignity of labor. St. Joseph cared for Mary, his wife, and Jesus, his son, through his work as a carpenter.
