Rok Ružič, History enthusiast

Why doesn't Ukraine just surrender to Russia since they can't win? Ukraine has been under Russian slavery for a very very long time. Centuries! Through all this time, Ukrainian people have learned, that Russian slavery and oppression is the most horrible thing, that can happen to a people. Nowadays you can hear Russians talking about how Ukrainians have no culture, while the Russians have Tolstoy and Pushkin and whatever. The reality of it is, that Russians have persecuted and suppressed Ukrainian culture for so long, and have murdered so many prospective Ukrainian artists, writers, intellectuals, and other prominent society figures, that it's a veritable wonder, and a great testament to Ukrainian people's resilience and love of their nation,

that Ukrainian language and culture still exist. This needs to be said. Of all the people in central and eastern Europe, who had suffered the horrors of Russian oppression and subjugation, the Ukrainians suffered the absolute worst. They suffered endless Russian oppression, the bountiful fruits of black Ukrainian soil were taken to Russia at bayonet point repeatedly, leaving Ukrainians to starve repeatedly. There were three big bouts of Russian induced famine. The infamous Holodomor of 1932–33 is well known, upper estimates of the number of victims reach beyond 10 million people. But there were two other bouts of Russian-organized famine, that killed many Ukrainians, one was in

19 Veez Illustrated Weekly

1922–23, and another one in 1946. The story was always the same, Ukrainin farmers produced ample food, but Russians came and took the food at bayonet point. In some cases they didn't even take the food to feed the Russians, they just dumped it on a pile and left it to rot, making starving victims watch their food rot, as they were dying of hunger. The point of food confiscation wasn't to feed the Russians or anyone else for that matter, the point was to torture and murder Ukrainians with hunger.

Ukrainians suffered under tsarism and stalinism all the way to 1991, when they finally got their freedom. For a while, they were under a Russian puppet, but in 2014 they got real democracy, free elections, where people elect their leadership. They also got a taste for how life is like, when you live free, and that is why they are now fighting so hard. Once you have tasted freedom, returning to slavery, and suffering and deprivation under Russians is unthinkable. That is why the Ukrainians are fighting so hard. They know Russian oppression, they know very well the horrors, that Russian subjugation brings (remember 45000 body bags? That was just for start). And that is why

they deserve all the support we can possibly give them.

For Ukrainians surrender doesn't mean end of war and back to business as usual, as Russian propaganda would like you to believe. For many Ukrainians, surrender means death! For some of those it's horrible torture and then death. Remember 45000 body bags and large numbers of mobile crematoria? Russians learned from Katyn, they knew that if you leave mass graves after you mass murder, those mass graves can be discovered, and then you must deal with them in your foreign policy. That is why they wanted to avoid that, and they planned to incinerate the corpses of the victims, so they can never be found. That's what awaits many hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians if they surrender. For those few lucky enough to survive, they would suffer endless Russian oppression, robbery, exploitation, periodic mass murder, they wouldn't be allowed to speak Ukrainian any longer, they wouldn't be allowed to call themselves Ukrainian any longer, they wouldn't have free elections any longer, they would be governed by Kremlin appointees (as we can plainly see on

20 Veez Illustrated Weekly

the occupied territories), there would be no free speech (as we can plainly see on occupied territories), there would be no freedom of expression (as we can plainly see on the occupied territories), there would be no freedom of religion, (this is little known, because all the attrocities take all the news space, but as we can see on the occupied territories, Ukrainian Orthodox church is being eradicated and Kremlin appointed clerics of the Russian church are forced upon the Ukrainians). Ukraine would be unable to join the EU and participate in European prosperity, they would be exploited by the Russians, forced to live at the edge of existence, without any kind of prospects whatsoever, and without any kind of power to change anything.

Victims of Ukrainian genocide organized and perpetrated by Russians

Ukrainians are fully aware of the horrific fate that awaits them if they fall under Russian domination. That is why they are fighting so hard, with such vigor and tenacity. They know that the horrors of war, as bad as they are, are still a lot better than life in slavery under Russian oppression and exploitation. Ukrainians are defending themselves. We must help them any way we can. EDIT: You don’t have to believe me, or Ukrainians for that matter. Russians have told us themselves, what they intended to do with Ukraine once they occupied it. Soursop: The Thorny Graviola Fruit-Is it natural ‘miracle’ remedy for cancer? By Dr. Eugne Dsouza, Moodubelle Some years back, when I had to go to Bangalore to attend my late brother’s first death anniversary memorial mass, my sister-in-law on phone asked me to get the Soursop also known as the fruit from the Graviola tree, called ‘Vodamba’ in the local language here. When asked the reason, she said that one of her acquaintances who has been the victim of cancer had requested her to get the Soursop fruit and also leaves of the plant if possible as it is believed that the Soursop is 10,000 times more effective cancer killer than the chemotherapy. Before, proceeding to Bangalore, I plucked the largest of the Soursop fruits from one of our two medium sized Graviola plants and also a plastic bagful of leaves. On reaching Bangalore, I handed over the ‘miracle medicine’ to my sister-in-law and in turn she gave the same to her acquaintance

who received with gratitude and immense satisfaction. Later, I received another phone call from a lady requesting to give at least one Soursop fruit to treat one of her cancer-affected relative in Bangalore. Though the few Soursop fruits that are dangling from the thin branches of the plants had not yet been matured, I agreed to hand over one of the medium sized fruits to someone who collected and delivered it to be taken to Bangalore. Having heard about the importance and sudden demand for this humble Soursop fruit in the treatment of cancer, I decided to understand about the Graviola tree and the Soursop fruit in detail and surfed the internet and collected considerable amount of information out of which I have compiled this article.

23 Veez Illustrated Weekly

About Graviola: The scientific name of Soursop is Annona muricata. It is a small evergreen tree that generally grows in the rain forests of Africa, South America and Southeast Asia. It is called by different names in different regions. It is known as Graviola in Portuguese, Corossol in Frecnh, Guyabano in Spanish, Mullatha in Malayalam, Mulluramphal in Kannada and Vodamba as I have known this fruit since it had been addressed as such in my neighbourhood. The bark, leaves, roots, and fruits are used for traditional remedies in many countries. Graviola extracts are used for treating infections of viruses or parasites, rheumatism, arthritis, diarrhea, dysentery, etc. The flesh of the fruit consists of an edible, white pulp, some fiber and a core of indigestible black seeds. The species is the only member of its kind suitable for processing and preservation. The pulp is also used to make fruit nectar, smoothies, fruit juice drinks, as well as candies and ice cream flavorings. The raw

Soursop fruit can be used as vegetable. When it is ripe, its taste is aa mixture of sweet and sour. The fruit contains significant amounts of vitamin C, vitamin B1 and vitamin B2.

Graviola as ‘Cancer-buster’-A Hoax? It has been believed that Soursop is a miraculous natural cancer killer which is 10,000 times stronger than chemotherapy. However, there are 25 Veez Illustrated Weekly

chemotherapeutic potential, especially with regard to multi-drug resistant cancer cells. In certain laboratory studies it has been found that, Graviola extracts can kill some types of liver and breast cancer cells that are resistant to particular chemotherapy drugs. But these tests were only confined to test tubes and no large scale clinical tests were conducted on humans to determine the safety and efficacy for treating cancer. Thus, there is no significant evidence to show that Soursop or Graviola extracts work as a cure for cancer. Adverse Effects of Graviola: different opinions regarding this claim. Some of the medical experts call this tall claim as ‘hoax’. According to one account, the idea that Soursop can fight cancer effectively started after a research at Purdue University’s School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The research concluded that the active components of the tree are unique phytochemical substances known as annonaceous acetogenins which may have

Those who underplay the importance of Soursop in the cure of cancer also claim that the use of the fruit and other parts of the Graviola trees may have certain adverse effects in some people especially movement disorders and nerve damage that is similar to Parkinson’s disease which is due to the very high concentration of annonacin. Graviola also has few other side effects like lowering of blood pressure so it should not be

26 Veez Illustrated Weekly

taken by people with low blood pressure or heart complications. Was the Truth about Graviola Hidden by Drug Companies? It is quite interesting that there are quite a number of claims that vouch for the amazing anti-cancer properties of Graviola tree and Soursop. It is said that there have been extensive research on the therapeutic nature of the Graviola extracts. According to an account one of America’s biggest billion dollar drug manufacturing companies began a search for cancer cure and their research centered on Graviola, a legendary healing tree from the Amazon Rainforest. Various parts of the Graviola treeincluding the bark, leaves, roots, fruit and fruit-seeds have been used for centuries by medicine men and native Indians in South America to treat heart disease, asthma, liver problems and arthritis. Going on very little documented scientific evidence, the company

spent huge amount of money and resources in testing Graviola’s anticancerous properties and were shocked by the results as Graviola proved itself to be a cancer-killing dynamo. However, the company had a big problem with the Graviola tree. Being completely natural resource, under federal law, it could not be patented and hence there was no way to make huge profits from it. In order to avoid this problem, the drug company spent nearly seven years and poured millions of dollars in trying to synthesize two of the Graviola tree’s most powerful anticancer ingredients. If they could isolate and produce man-made clones of what makes the Graviola so potent, they would be able to patent it and make big money. However, in spite of all their efforts they did not succeed in replicating those ant-cancer ingredients of the Graviola tree. As there was no way the company could protect its profits or even make good the millions of dollars that it had spent on research, its dream of huge profits ended, it

27 Veez Illustrated Weekly

practically gave up research on Graviola. The drug company not only shelved the entire research project but also chose not to publish the findings of its research. However, one scientist from the Graviola research team, realizing the importance of the findings, risking his career contacted a company that has been dedicated in harvesting medical plants from the Amazon Rainforest and blew the whistle. When researchers at the Health Sciences Institute were alerted to the news of Graviola, they began tracking the research done on the cancer-killing tree and the National Cancer Institute performed the first scientific research in 1976. The results showed that Graviola’s ‘leaves and stems were found effective in attacking and destroying malignant cells.’ However, the results were published in an internal report but never released to the public. Since 1976, Graviola has proven to be an immensely potent cancer killer in 20 independent laboratory tests. In spite of this, no clinical

trials, the typical benchmark that the mainstream doctors and journals use to judge a treatment’s value, were ever initiated. A study published in the Journal of Natural Products, following a recent study conducted at the Catholic University of South Korea stated that one chemical in Graviola was found to selectively kill colon cancer cells. The most significant part of the Catholic University of South Korea report is that Graviola was shown to selectively target the cancer cells, leaving healthy cells untouched. Unlike chemotherapy which indiscriminately targets all actively reproducing cells causing the often devastating side effects of nausea and hair loss in cancer patients. A study at Purdue University recently found that leaves from the Graviola tree killed cancer cells among six human cell lines and were especially effective against prostate, pancreatic and lung cancers. Laboratory and field research suggest that Soursop and derived

28 Veez Illustrated Weekly

substances from the Graviola tree may have potential for various future applications such as antiinflammatory, anti-diabetic and anticancer effects in laboratory experiments. However, large-scale studies in humans have not yet been done. The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center list cancer treatment as one of the "purported uses" of Soursop. According to Cancer Research UK, "Many sites on the internet advertise and promote Graviola capsules as a cancer cure, but none of them are supported by any reputable scientific cancer organizations" and "there is no evidence to show that Graviola works as a cure for cancer" and consequently they do not support its use as a treatment for cancer. In 2008, a court case relating to the sale in the UK of Triamazon, a Soursop product, resulted in the criminal conviction of a man under the terms of the UK Cancer Act for offering to treat people for cancer. A spokesman for the council that initiated the action stated, "it is as important now as it ever was that

people are protected from those peddling unproven products with spurious claims as to their effects." The Federal Trade Commission in the United States determined that there was "no credible scientific evidence" that the extract of Soursop sold by a drug company "can prevent, cure or treat cancer of any kind." Considering the above arguments and counterarguments regarding the role of Soursop and Graviola extracts in the cure of cancer, it would be difficult to depend entirely on these natural remedies to fight cancer. There may be some element of truth in the arguments both for and against the efficacy of Graviola as a ‘miracle’ natural anti-cancer therapy. However, since recently, there has been increasing demand for the Soursop and Graviola leaves for the treatment of cancer. Cancer being a dreaded disease, victims of cancer and their family members and friends would go to any extent to find any kind of remedy that is being suggested or believed to have been effective in certain cases.

29 Veez Illustrated Weekly

It is quite important to understand that in all the research that is being done in cancer or the work done with patients it has been found that there is no single diet or nutritional remedy that can ’cure’ cancer. It has been increasingly found that by modifying one’s diet combined with change in lifestyle, self awareness, support from family members and friends and positive attitude one can develop confidence to face the situation and

even conquer the dreaded disease as is being evident from the examples of many cancer survivors. (Compiled from various sources)

Pioneer Super Merchant of Kodial - Martin Pais

Kanara/Mangalore Konkani Community belonging to most genealogical categories are thought to have similar DNA and their known roots are the ancient "Saraswats". They are marked for business acumen, even before MBA came to exist they had a very high caliber mixed with a deep leaning towards integrity and honesty. Thus they were greatly valued by the early Tuluva dynasties, the Mysore

rulers, the Portuguese, the British and a whole range of rulers and were given plum positions. It may be noted that in the 21st century now, all recognised Nations of the world have this great community as citizens, and they are contributing in very admirable levels and are recognised for many achievements with appreciation. Let us take a look at one very early business house very well known and renowned in Mangalore for long and still managed by the descendants of the pioneer businessman Martin Pais, well known in commercial circles in South India and a legend of his time. Martin Pais (1852-1921) : One renowned member of the Mangalore Konkani Community who bore great admired super qualities of commerce and management was Martin Pais (1852-1921), who set up one of

Mangalore's oldest premier departmental stores, even today being run by his great grandson. The premier community genealogist of Mangalore in his valuable publications indicates : Marcel Pais (c1780) Grandfather of our protagonist Martin Pais, would have lived in Urva, after he married Felipa Lobo, sister of Lawrence Lobo Prabhu, donor of the site that is now St.Aloysius College some descendants still live in Urva now. Marcel Pais' youngest son, John Marcel Pais (1872) is Martin Pais' father. Martin Pais is the eldest in his family. He in 1880, founded 'M.Pais & Sons' now near the Lady Goshen

Govt. Hospital in the heart of the

city, which is now run by his greatgrandson, Keith Pais, more than 140 years it's been on. Martin's first wife was Margaret Menezes by whom he had nine children: Juliana, Rose, Lily, Basil, Frederick, Edward and three others who died young. After Margaret's passing away in a freak accident, Martin married her younger sister Anna Maria Menezes, as his young children knew and loved her and needed a substitute mother. They had two daughters Mary Margaret and Lucy, see a bit about Lucy here below.

Martin was born in Mangalore on June 10, 1852. Astute in business

32 Veez Illustrated Weekly

and far-sighted, he set up his first store in the Old Port or Bunder area of Mangalore. In those years, goods were transported along the coast by sail boats, which can be seen even now. All these had to be loaded and unloaded and stored close at hand so Martin cleverly bought up several vacant lots and godowns which could be used for this. As he now owned a large amount of real estate in the area, he acquired a name and fame as a sharp honest businessman. Several British officials and coffee planters were based in and around Mangalore, and Martin began stocking supplies he knew they would require. He traded

directly with famous companies in England and Scotland like Huntley & Palmer, Crosse & Blackwell, C. & F. Morton, John Haig, Johnny Walker and others, importing confectionery, tinned provisions, dried fruit, champagnes, wines and spirits and other delicacies which the British and Kodialgars enjoyed. M.Pais & Sons, always renowned for its uncompromising high quality merchandise famous for its ginger preserve which was made in his own home to his high and exacting standards and quality. Today, it must be a complex modern operation to say the least. 'M.Pais & Sons' grows :

He moved his shop from Bunder to a much larger premise on Maidan Road in 1880, where it still operates today. In 1908, Martin's eldest daughter Juliana joined him to run

to run his business with his son Frederick taking over from her. Frederick's sons Phillip and Patrick managed the business and stores now being run by Phillip's son Keith Pais. Salt, a precious commodity of that time, was a special product that Martin took pride in, and was brought in by country boats (manji) from Bombay and Gujarat. Several

his business. She was as sharp, astute and honest as he was, and an able administrator. She corresponded with all the British firms they were dealing with, sending letters in beautiful classic handwriting and impeccable English as many were known to use in Mangalore. It astounded many to find out she had never had a formal education but was home schooled. She remained a spinster to devote all her efforts and energies to running the business and was a formidable presence still remembered with awe and reverence. After Martin passed away on March 4, 1921, Juliana continued

times Martin personally went with the boats himself to insure the salt was properly purchased and stored. On one such trip, just as they were nearing Mangalore Bundar, the boat capsized and Martin was thrown into the sea and nearly drowned. Moplah (Muslim) fishermen rescued him; it is a popular belief Martin was covered in raw rice believed to be a very good means to warm up the body. Martin always

remembered that he owed his life to them and always treated the Moplah's with gratitude. As his business prospered, he purchased coffee estates in Coorg and set up shops at different places. He spent his riches in good and useful ways for all, he built a grand three story mansion at Kodialbail. In 1911. Martin hosted many grand celebrations and community occasions. His wife Anna Maria was gifted with green fingers as they say and delicately grafted roses of various hues in such a way that one single bush could have roses of 5 or more colours growing on it. When the dignitaries arrived, they were amazed to see the slopes of the garden covered in these amazing multi-coloured rose bushes. They suggested that Martin name his

magnificent palatial home “Coronation Gardens” and that was the name it was known by till it was sold to make way for high rise buildings. Martin was well known as an empathetic prominent philanthropist. He gave generously in charity and usually invited the poor, and have-nots of the city to attend lavish feasts on various occasions. In those British times, the Coronation of King Edward, the visit of the Prince of Wales to India in 1906, the visit of the Apostolic Delegate in 1908, and the Coronation Durbar of 1911 were prominent occasions. During these charity meals, he first served the Moplahs and then the rest of the people, gifts in cash and kind were also his favorite considerations for distribution.

A look at LUCY's now : The place called "LUCY's", founded by Cecilia Shresta nee' Mascarenhas (the grand daughter of Martin Pais, i.e: his youngest child Lucy's daughter), it stated small simple in 2018 as all great things, soon after Cecilia ( better known as Leela) and her husband Harry generously came home to their roots from the USA . The Shrestas lived in different places in the US, first in Philadelphia, Arkansas and Texas. In Mangalore now settled down among her ancestral roots in this part of the city; located opposite

the gate of the historical Rosario Cathedral on the road to Hoige Bazar, Passers by would generally not notice it - the sign board loudly says "LUCY's - Knitting, Crochet & Quilting - Classes and Sales ," within a couple of years it has really sprung into a multifaceted interest zone for many women students,

house wives, social activists and a solace to many even during the times of the Pandemic. Now, woolies are not what one would really look for in a humid warm coastal city of this hot west coast. But, the potential created out of it was a service to the most heroic people of the nation, the military men. The fact that gradually many institutions and individuals came in to see and understand the "knit and pearl" concept 's popularity has taken an upward trajectory and promises to be a gradual launching pad for many good ideas and actions. It will help people to know and contribute, even in small ways. Cecilia's dear mother "Lucy Mascarenhas", brought up a large family in Bangalore in times that were difficult. It seems her mainstay and deep interest was in Needle work, Crochet and Knitting to a very large extent. Lucy never shied away from passing on her ideas and skills not only to her children, but to many youngsters she took care of in the 1950s and 60s. She is a well known personality in the Konkani Catholic Community in Bangalore and Mangalore. Cecilia is now

spreading her mother's skills for posterity here, indeed a mission unique. Mangalore/Kanara of those early times even as of now had people of great nobility and humane considerations, may the community not forget and be considerate to their fellowmen. Time and tide are the controllers of all things and change is universal. Times have

changed for all to lean towards humanity and not be shackled to old religious fads and rituals and break free to serve God in a more direct and pleasing way long live our Konkani roots and ethos.

The Ukraine Genocide

Cultural Heritage & Ancient Treasures in Ruins - By: Dr. Mona Mendonca Nikolai Gogol, the great 19thcentury Ukrainian writer has said.. ‘You can't imagine how stupid the whole world has grown nowadays. In the wake of the Russia-Ukraine conflict', I am amazed at his statement which has demonstrated the meanness and cruelty testifying how mindless can the big nations get to harm a civilization leaving in great misery. We all believe that it is only a war that can end the war and the Russian invasion of Ukraine which resulted in the death of millions of its people also showcased the greatest cultural catastrophe of recent times resulting in the unpredictable damage to priceless historical artifacts and monuments. Ukraine the historic country in Europe is well known not just for its beautiful

landscapes but also for its wellpreserved cultural heritage. Home to more than 130 nationalities Ukraine represents a multicultural and multilingual identity, in short a model of a multi-state nation.

UNESCO identifies at least 6 among the 7 world heritage sites to be damaged by the Russian military force. Kyiv, the capital, and the parts of the Chernihiv region of northern Ukraine which is the center of a cluster of historic sites are seen as the main target and testimony of violence on Culture and heritage that resulted in an irreplaceable loss of both tangible and intangible resources. .

Pope Francis and Russia-Ukraine War

(Philip Mudartha) Pope Francis is increasingly vocal: Since Russian troops invaded on Feb. 24, Pope Francis has been vocal but he has not specifically named Russia as the aggressor. Probably, he wants to keep dialogue open between Russia and the Holy See. The pope has offered the Vatican as a mediator in the conflict, which Ukraine has welcomed, and Russia has not. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has invited Pope Francis to visit Ukraine and deliver a message of peace and solidarity. Pope Francis has signaled his

openness to visiting and admitted, that the possibility “is on the table.” But there are important points to consider: How would such a gesture affect Vatican-Russia and Catholic-Orthodox relations? Is a papal visit even possible or advisable given the pope’s recent knee problems? Above all, what would such a papal visit achieve? There are two wars in Ukraine: First is the physical invasion of Ukraine by Russian Armed Forces to grab land and annex Ukrainian territory. The second is the tense relationship between two rival factions of Orthodox Christian Church. Pope Francis enjoys cordial relations with Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, who is regarded as spiritual head Orthodox Christians. But his ecumenical efforts to unite all Christian Churches, particularly the Orthodox and the Catholics, have not found support with Patriarch

primate Church

of Russian (ROC) of

Bartholomew (left) and Kirill (right), the rivals in Ukraine. Patriarch Kirill sees Moscow Patriarchate as “true seat of Orthodoxy” and accuses the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Constantinople as schismatic leader. The relationship between the two primates worsened due to the 2018 Schism in Ukraine. Ukrainian Orthodox Church- Kiev Patriarchate (UOC-KP) broke from ROC in 2018. Its application for autocephaly (complete canonical independence) with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Constantinople, endorsed by prowest Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko as “nationalist church” like other such churches in other countries was approved by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in early 2019. Thus, Orthodox Church in Ukraine (OCU) split into

nationalist faction UOC-KP with about 8,000 parishes of total 20,000 under its canonical jurisdiction. The original OCU continued to be administered by ROC of Moscow and reported to Patriarch Kirill as its spiritual leader. The on-going invasion of Ukraine by Russia has further caused anguish among the Russian Orthodox Church. Many in Ukraine have switched their loyalty to UOCKP. Not only in Ukraine, but the Ukrainian and Russian diaspora are switching their allegiance to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople.

President Poroshenko with Bartholomew and UOC primate Is a papal visit to Ukraine stop the war? The new Ukrainian ambassador to the Holy See believes that it would. But most political observers think it is not going to stop the war in any way. But a papal visit will send a very powerful message to the

48 Veez Illustrated Weekly

world Catholic community and the world community that is observing what is going on in Ukraine. Pope Francis carries a tremendous public relation’s soft power. A papal visit will be globally symbolic, and all television channels in free democratic world would like to telecast the proceedings ‘live’. If he goes to Kyiv, how does he get there? Where does he go in Kyiv? He probably stays at the nunciature. When, where and how he will meet with Zelensky? Would he concelebrate a public Mass? The Russians are bombing anywhere and everywhere in Ukraine. How could the security arrangements for such a VVIP visit managed? Would Russia co-operate and order a temporary pause in its war effort? There was criticism of pope for not naming Russia as the aggressor. But he went ahead and unfurled the Ukrainian flag from Bucha in a symbolic gesture of holding Russia responsible for genocide. He also drove to the Russian Embassy and talked to the ambassador. Certainly, that was unprecedented! After all the pope is a head of state and his visit is sure to turn several

heads.

But Putin does not care! Yes, Putin does not care. In the past, Putin has visited the pope twice and each time, kept the pope “waiting” for 45 minutes. If he cared, he would not arrive 45 minutes late. Pope Francis has sent messages to Putin seeking to meet him in Moscow in person. His request and repeated reminders have gone unanswered. Putin is not willing to meet the pope for whom he does not have much respect. Even so, the pope has been praying for peace in Ukraine and would like to be a mediator between the warring parties in the conflict. Does Patriarch Kirill care? Since Pope Francis was inaugurated in March 2013, ecumenical unity among churches has been his focus. Patriarch Kirill had refused to meet him on European soil and the

49 Veez Illustrated Weekly

pope made a concession by meeting him in Cuba for a few hours while in transit at the Havana airport. Since that meeting six years ago, Pope Francis has tried on many occasions to foster a deeper relationship with the Moscow patriarch. They have been invited numerous times to attend events at the Vatican. But Patriarch Kirill to does not care. The pope is not getting anywhere. The pope is probably convinced that attempts to hold dialogue with Russia are not going to go anywhere with this patriarch. Patriarch Kirill and Putin have a symbiotic relationship. They are just intertwined, like Siamese twins: Putin uses Kirill, and Kirill probably uses Putin. They are in a marriage of convenience. Pope Francis also warned Patriarch Kirill, “not to become Putin's altar boy". NATO is “barking up” at Russia’s door: The pope has repeatedly called for peace in Ukraine and denounced a "cruel and senseless war". The pope also said he would not be travelling to Ukraine anytime soon. "I'm not going to Kyiv for now. I

feel I shouldn't go. I have to go to Moscow first, I have to meet Putin first," the pope has said. Pope Francis also said he understands the need of Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill to be involved with the state but instead of becoming Putin's altar boy, “he should speak like a brother in Christ”. But since Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February, the pope's calls for peace have contrasted with Kirill's defense of Putin's fight against Russia's "external and internal enemies". Kirill has described the military action as a “holy war” against western scourges of excess consumption, gay pride parades and other western “immoral” values. In a balancing act, Pope Francis has recently publicly stated his views on NATO expansionism towards the east since 1997. The pope said that NATO was “barking” at Russia’s door.

US Goan gives Mai Bhas a Google boost Efforts of Goan Sanjeet Hegde Desai, Senior Manager Business Systems in Google, US and Konkani activist Chetan Acharya in Goa, bear fruit as Konkani is included in Google Translate services

MARCOS GONSALVES marcos@herald-goa.com MARGAO: The dream to see Konkani in the Google Translate Service has been realised, and a major part of the credit goes to Sanjeet Hegde Desai, son of the soil, working in Google, as Senior Manager Business Systems, who pushed this to the Google managerial board. Desai was earlier

with Oracle and Accenture before moving to Google in 2013. Simultaneously, the initiative started in 2019 by Chetan Acharya, then president of the Konkani Bhasha Mandal and a Konkani activist, who was repeatedly in contact with Desai to push the project forward, cannot be ignored. “The process was initiated in December 2019 when I was president of Konkani Bhasha Mandal, Goa. One of my friends, Sanjeet Hegde Desai, son of the soil, working with Google in the US pushed this thought to the managerial board,” Acharya told Herald. He said that it is a lesson to those who always try to demean Konkani. “We always try to defend ourselves by our work. This initiative will help translators, language learners and also the common people. Since the mobile has its space in every hand, I would say Konkani has reached every hand, what is needed is everyone must start using it. It is a great pride for Konkani lovers that Konkani has appeared on Google Translate,” Acharya said.

52 Veez Illustrated Weekly

In reply to queries from Herald, Desai said, “It is personally exciting to see Konkani being available on Google Translate. It was more than a yearlong process, from the moment of having logged a request, to it finally being available. All credit to the incredibly talented team of software engineers at Google.” He added, “It was a learning experience for me personally, to see the sheer number of Konkani dialects spoken across various States and realise how they represent our cultural evolution and history.” Anwesha Singbal, president of Konkani Bhasha Mandal said it is immensely satisfying news that Google has added Konkani to the list of Google Translate features. “It is important that a language like Konkani that has comparatively less speakers hold its fort in the technological world. The addition of Konkani in Google is therefore a welcome step, and I am sure it will help people the world over to communicate better in the language,” she said. She said Konkani people across the world have always strived to

preserve their language and this feature will assist them in their endeavours. “We are also making rigorous efforts to promote Konkani in Wikipedia and Wiki-Source so that our language does not lag behind in any manner,” she added. Gulab editor Fausto V Da Costa, said will be a very big boost to Konkani and its writers irrespective of their script. “The Konkani language will have a very wide reach in this digital era. But writers will also need to work hard to create rich and quality literature that will match national and international levels. This is a boost to the Konkani literature and writers because their work will be read by varied readers Indian languages as well as foreign languages. Thus, a quality writer of Konkani will be recognised nationally as well as internationally,” Da Costa said. He added that with this Google Konkani translator, writers as well as readers, will be able to freely access literature of famed national and international writers of their choice and read it in Konkani. In his homily Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha invited the five ordained ministers to achieve holiness through the order of priesthood. Bishop said, “Every ordained priest is called for holiness. A priest becomes holy by celebrating the sacraments. The holiness of a priest doesn't take away his weaknesses. Hence, he needs to find strength in his weaknesses by surrendering

himself to God and totally depending on Him. This becomes the personal mission of every priest in the path of Holiness”. At the end of the Eucharistic Mass, Rev. Fr Rockwin Pinto, Professor, St Joseph Seminary, Jeppu introduced the newly ordained priests. He said, "Today the Church rejoices with heartfelt gratitude for the immense gift which priests represent through their hidden and tireless service. The Diocese of Mangalore which has grown in leaps and bounds through the dedication of innumerable priests exalts in the Lord today with adding of five more priests with a prayer that they remain faithful to their vocation as “friends of Christ”, whom he has called by name, chosen and sent as witnessed in the rite of Ordination." Rev. Johnson Vincent Periera, one among the ordained said, "I am extremely glad to witness this great day of my life. I have been waiting and preparing for this day. A trillion thanks to God Almighty who made it possible." Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha thanked their parents, parish priests, formators, ministry guides and all those involved in their formation.

The programme was jointly organised by Sahabalve Udupi and Karnataka Progressive Associations Federation

on Saturday May 14, at Christian School ground here. Yogendra Yadav further said, “It is not important whether we will win or lose, but how and when we will be win is important. If we fail to win, we are not eligible to live here. We will fight until we secure a victory. “We will start spreading harmony

right from Udupi, where some creatures are trying to disturbharmony. Some people are trying to divide this country, but we will unite them. They are trying to create two classes of citizens like owner and tenants. But all are equal according to the Constitution. “Hindi is not a national language. It is not mentioned in the Constitution. Kannada is as old as thousands of years. “Secularism means 'Sarva Dharma Samabhav', treating all religion equally. Right to equality, right to culture and right to religion. Respect each other’s religion. Secularism is not a gift of British, but a gift of our Constitution. “Someone is trying to portray himself as God, but God considers all together with no discrimination. nationalists. The country has existed since 5,000 years. It will be there even after us. Secularism is nothing but religion of this country. “Those who are creating spreading hatred among people in the society are anti- nationalists. Those who respect each other’s religion and believe in unity, are the true patriots. “We have the legacy of Basavanna and Gouthama Buddha and we have the Constitution with us,” he said. Sasikanth Senthil, a retired IAS officer, in his presidential address, said, “We should celebrate the 'idea of Indian' and brotherhood. Samarasya Nadige is the foundation for that celebration. We were keeping quiet by seeing these developments and that is the main problem. “There are people with two mind sets in the society. Some people do want any discrimination, and some want to create terror and hatred among public. But we should live in brotherhood. People who create differences exist in every religion. “As much as 70% of the population does not raise its voice against injustice. We should create a good

environment for our future generations. We should raise our voice and speak for future. We protect the soul of India. “Udupi is going to be very strong. Udupi has started responding against injustice. This work should be done through youths and help reach these ideas to the villages,” he said.
