(Autonomous) College, Mangaluru. We are currently residing in Premnagar, Bajjodi, Mangaluru. During the course of my profession of transporting school children, I

would notice the traffic congestion in the city roads and the hardship the school children and the elderly had to face while crossing the roads, especially near the school premises. This provoked me to render my service to the people. I’ve been rendering my service to the school children to cross the road near St. Agnes and St. Theresa School from the past 18 years. From 2015-17, I have been giving my service as a traffic warden at Nanthoor Junction between 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the evenings. Currently from the last three years, I have been rendering my service in the evenings from 5:30 to 8:00pm in front of Padua aHigh School. The service which am rendering is free of remuneration., purely selfless and honorary, and is a small contribution from my side towards the society. I am satisfied with this work, and I have determined myself that I would continue this as long as I have the strength to do it. I had never expected that my service would be noticed and appreciated by the society. ‘SEDITION’ MUST GO!

-*Fr. Cedric Prakash SJ

The ‘sedition’ law in India is repressive and regressive, archaic and obsolete, draconian in nature and blatantly violative of the freedoms guaranteed to every citizen of the country in the Constitution. It specifically goes against Articles 19 1 (A), 14 and 21 of the Constitution dealing with the Right to Equality, Freedom of Speech and Expression and Protection of Life and Personal

Liberty. Framed under Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the sedition law states, “Whoever, by words, either spoken or written, or by signs, or by visible representation, or otherwise, brings or attempts to bring into hatred or contempt, or excites or attempts to excite disaffection towards, the government established by law in India, shall be punished with imprisonment which may extend to three years, to which a fine may be added; or, with fine.”

This draconian law was first drafted in 1837 by the British historian and politician Thomas Macaulay. It was mysteriously deleted when the IPC was implemented in 1860. Sedition laws were enacted in 17th century England when MPs believed that only positive government beliefs

23 Veez Illustrated Weekly

should be allowed to exist, as negative opinions were harmful to the government and monarchy. The British administration in India, were wary at that time of movements brewing to challenge their domination. So, in 1870, they felt the necessity for a separate section to deal with the offence, an amendment offered by Sir James Stephen which was inserted as Section 124A of the IPC. The law was obviously challenged by several thinking and eminent citizens of the country

May 11, 2022, was a historic day indeed for the Constitution of India and for “we the people”! In a landmark order, the Supreme Court put on hold Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code, known as the sedition law. The 152-year-old colonial era law, said the order, should be kept in abeyance till the Central Government reconsiders the provision. The order was pronounced by a three-member bench comprising Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, Justice Surya Kant

and Justice Hima Kohli while hearing a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the sedition offence.

The three-page order of the Supreme Court states among other things, “This Court is cognizant of security interests and integrity of the State on one hand, and the civil liberties of citizens on the other. There is a requirement to balance both sets of considerations, which is a difficult exercise. The case of the petitioners is that this provision of law dates back to 1898, and predates the Constitution itself, and is being misused”. The Apex Court in its concluding directive says, “8. In view of the clear stand taken by the Union of India, we deem it appropriate to pass the following order in the interest of justice: a. The interim stay granted in W.P.(Crl.) No.217/2021 along with W.P.(Crl.) No.216/2021 vide order dated 31.05.2021 shall continue to operate till further orders. b. We hope and expect that the

24 Veez Illustrated Weekly

State and Central Governments will restrain from registering any FIR, continuing any investigation or taking any coercive measures by invoking Section 124A of IPC while the aforesaid provision of law is under consideration. c. If any fresh case is registered under Section 124A of IPC, the affected parties are at liberty to approach the concerned Courts for appropriate relief. The Courts are requested to examine the reliefs sought, taking into account the present order passed as well as the clear stand taken by the Union of India. d. All pending trials, appeals and proceedings with respect to the charge framed under Section 124A of IPC be kept in abeyance. Adjudication with respect to other Sections, if any, could proceed if the Courts are of the opinion that no prejudice would be caused to the accused. e. In addition to the above, the Union of India shall be at liberty to issue the Directive as proposed and placed before us, to the State

Governments/Union Territories to prevent any misuse of Section 124A of IPC. f. The above directions may continue till further orders are passed. 9. List these petitions in the third week of July, 2022.” Article 14, an online portal joint effort between lawyers, journalists, and academics to address threats to and failures of justice and deficiencies in the legal system, tracks successes that can be built upon and discerns trends and patterns that require to be brought to the widest public attention. It takes its name from arguably the most important fundamental right conferred by the Constitution of India: "The State shall not deny to any person equality before the law or the equal protection of the laws within the territory of India."

On 2 February 2021 Article 14 launched its sedition database; a count and analysis of all sedition cases since 2010, revealed: •

65% of nearly 11,000

25 Veez Illustrated Weekly

individuals in 816 sedition cases since 2010 were implicated after 2014 when Modi took office. Among those charged with sedition: opposition politicians, students, journalists, authors and academics. • 96% of sedition cases filed against 405 Indians for criticising politicians and governments over the last decade were registered after 2014, with 149 accused of making “critical” and/or “derogatory” remarks against Modi, 144 against Uttar Pradesh (UP) chief minister Yogi Adityanath. • A 28% increase in the number of sedition cases filed each year between 2014 and 2020, Modi’s time in office, compared to the yearly average between 2010 and 2014, the second term of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) administration. • Much of this increase is due to a surge in sedition cases after protest movements, such as those against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019 and the rape of a Dalit teen at Hathras in UP

During the anti-CAA protests,

22 of 25 sedition cases involving 3,700 people were filed in BJP-ruled states. After the Pulwama attack, 26 of 27 sedition cases involving 42 persons were filed in BJP-ruled states. • Of the five states with the highest number of sedition cases, a majority were registered during the BJP’s time in power in four of them—Bihar, UP, Karnataka and Jharkhand. • In UP, 77% of 115 sedition cases since 2010 were registered over the last four years, since Yogi Adityanath became the chief minister. More than half of these were around issues of “nationalism”: against those who protested the CAA, for shouting “Hindustan Murdabad”, allegedly celebrating Pulwama attack and India’s loss in 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. • In Bihar, between 2010-2014, the majority of sedition cases related to Maoism and counterfeit currency. After 2014, 23% of sedition cases were against those

26 Veez Illustrated Weekly

who protested the CAA, against celebrities who spoke up against lynching and intolerance and those who allegedly raised “pro-Pakistan” slogans.

The data was startlingly clear enough: the Government particularly since 2014, had become vindicative and used(abused) the sedition law and other draconian laws very selectively to crush dissent and to throttle the voices of anyone who took a stand against it or criticised its anti-people policies. Thousands are actually still languishing in jails because of this law!

One of the petitioners, Major General Sudhir Vombatkere (retired), in an interview to NDTV said he turned to the court when the Constitution that he swore to protect was being challenged. “Every soldier takes an oath to defend the Constitution, they defend the Constitution even at the risk of their lives. And the country's

borders are defended by the Armed Forces in order that the people within the country can sleep safely and enjoy the freedoms and rights that the Constitution gives. That is the reason for my taking up this case," said the General credited with stalling a 162-year-old colonial relic. He added “I had noticed that a lot of things go wrong. I believe if there is injustice in one place, there is injustice everywhere. Injustices have to be opposed; they have to be resisted. I took to activism as I believe there have been injustices by all governments, state and central, regardless of their political colour… There are 800 cases and 13,000 are in jail, all citizens of India, my brothers and sisters. Only in the last eight years, nearly 400 of those 800 cases were registered. It has always been used as a political tool, just that it is more in recent years.” In a powerful statement welcoming the Supreme Court order, the panIndia ‘Peoples Union for Civil Liberties’(PUCL) states, “The order of the Supreme Court is a significant landmark in the struggle against

27 Veez Illustrated Weekly

sedition law which began with the arrest of freedom fighters like Gandhi and Tilak in colonial times to the arrest and conviction for life of PUCL Vice President Binayak Sen, the conviction of PUCL UP office bearer and journalist Seema Azad, as well as the filing of cases against PUCL national secretary Sudha Bharadwaj and PUCL Jharkhand member the late Fr. Stan Swamy and many others under the draconian laws such as sedition and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The use of this repressive provision led to the PUCL initiating a campaign to repeal the sedition law which garnered over 1,00,000 signatures. While the campaign did lead to the release of Binayak Sen, the petitions committee of the Rajya Sabha was also seized with the issue. But the law continued to be used by all governments to target their opponents… Much as the PUCL welcomes this order of the Supreme Court, it is also constrained to point out that inspite of this order, a larger number of human rights activists, journalists, Muslims, Dalits, Adivasis and students will continue

to languish in jail for exercising their constitutional right to freedom of speech and expression”.

In the next couple of months, the Supreme Court’s major legal challenge is whether the 1962 judgement in Kedar Nath Singh v Union of India was correctly decided. Speech that is likely to provoke disruption of public order is considered sedition, according to the Kedar Nath Singh judgement, which affirmed the constitutional validity of Section 124A. A sevenjudge panel will have to assess if that verdict was correct, and whether a statute against sedition may be considered an exception to free speech. In the end, unless Parliament rescinds the sedition legislation, the court will have to decide the fundamental issue. Even if the provision is weakened or replaced with a new legislation, it must pass the constitutionality test before the court.

Writing an analytical op-ed in the

28 Veez Illustrated Weekly

Indian Express (12 May 2022) ‘Supreme Court’s verdict on sedition is a small win’ Chitranshul Sinha says, “This order appears to be a small win but left a lot to be desired. Also, its implementation at the ground level remains to be seen. Lessons should have been taken from the fact that police across the country continued filing FIRs under section 66A of the Information Technology Act, 2000 which was declared to be unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 2015. The purported reason is that even though the provision was declared to be unconstitutional, it continued to remain on the statute book. The lack of awareness of local police is to blame here……Till the time safeguards are built to prevent misapplication of the UAPA, or even laws like the National Security Act, the law of sedition will keep rearing its head under different names despite the orders passed by the Supreme Court”.

In 1908, when Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak was being tried for

sedition in the Bombay High Court, he courageously stated, “Swaraj is my birth right, and I shall have it.” Justice Davar, the presiding judge, then asked him if he had anything to say before the sentence was pronounced, he audaciously replied, “All I wish to say is that in spite of the verdict of the jury, I maintain my innocence. There are higher powers that rule the destiny of men and nations. It may be the will of Providence that the cause I represent may prosper by suffering than by remaining free.” These immortal and inspiring words of Tilak can be read even today; they are etched on a marble plaque outside Court Room 46 in the Bombay High Court. Tilak’s biographer N.G.Jog has described this historic moment profoundly, “These words delivered on the spur of the moment have a spontaneous dignity and almost a Socratic sublimity. They breathe the spirit of dedication to freedom and of defiance against the might of the British Raj. And, they could have been uttered by only one man in

come out in top gear and demand that this draconian law be repealed totally, immediately and unconditionally. Joining Tilak and saying in one voice, “Swaraj is my birth right, and I shall have it!” The sedition law should go immediately!

In the final analysis, one has to be painfully aware, that this recent interim order is directional but not conclusive. It is just a ‘pause’! 16 May 2022 Though a major break -through, which has seriously rattled the *(Fr. First Indian layman Saint

On Sunday May 15, 2022, Canonisations in the Vatican have given a lot of fresh blood for the saint watchers in India and Asia - the Canaonosation of ‘Lazarus’ or ‘Devasahayam Pillai ’ in Tamil/Malayalam, meaning ‘God is my help', the very first lay person in India to be declared a saint. In the church there are countless saints from Europe and other areas, but from India and Central Asia very few can be counted. There are many

factors for this and only in the last couple of decades we note that more candidates are surfacing and the church is taking a better view of these. Devasagayam Pillai, ‘Lazarus’ or ‘Devasahayam Pillai ’ in Tamil/malayalam, meaning ‘God is my help'. Though he has been on the path to saint to sainthood since decades is hardly known even in India outside his territory. In fact perhaps very few are aware that 'Servant of God Mgr Raymond F C

Mascarenhas ( 1875-1960) a diocesan priest of Mangalore, first Parish Priest of Bendur (1914) and founder of the indigenous order of Nuns the Berthany Sisters (1921) is the very first person among Konkani Catholics , on the path to sainthood. The Vatican has a stringent and strict process even before a candidate is declared 'Blessed' and can take years generally. At present there are many causes, estimated

around 34, in different stages

(Servant of God, Venerable, Blessed) for sainthood, alive from India. Indeed the canonisation of the little known martyr now Saint of the church St. Devasahayam or Lazarus of Kottara will go a long way to bring fresh interest and action from our own communities and church officials. St. Devasahayam or Lazarus of Kottara : The new saint Devasahayam, who

was tortured and martyred after he converted to Catholicism in the 18th century, belongs to the Latin rite church. He suffered martyrdom in 1752, in what is southern India’s Kottara Diocese, near Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu. Born on April 23, 1712, as Neelakanda Pillai, in the village of Nattalam, Devasahayam served in the palace of southern India’s Hindu kingdom of Travancore, which stretched from what is Tamil Nadu’s Kanyakumari district, right up to

Capt. De Lenoy. St.Devasagayam's wife from a Nair family was Bargaviamma, she too soon received Baptism and took the name of Gnanappu, Tamil for Theresa. False charges of treason and espionage were brought against him and he was divested of his post in the royal administration. He was imprisoned and subjected to harsh persecution. A Catholic for only seven years, he was shot dead in the Aralvaimozhy forest on January 14, 1752. He was 39 at the time of his death.

Kochi in Kerala state. At baptism in 1745, he assumed the name ‘Lazarus’ or ‘Devasahayam’ in the Tamil language, meaning ‘God is my help.’ However, his conversion did not go well with the leaders of his native religion. He was an official in the court of Travancore’s Maharaja Marthanda Varma when he was instructed into the Catholic faith by a Dutch naval commander,

Devasahayam was recommended for the process of Beatification by the Vatican in 2004, at the request of the Kottar diocese, Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council and the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India. Pope Francis canonised Blessed Devasahayam Pillai along with nine others during a Canonisation Mass in St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican on Sunday May 15, 2022. A miracle attributed to Devasahayam Pillai was recognised by Pope Francis in 2014, clearing the path to his canonisation

in 2022. There are many holy spots in the Kottar diocese sacred to the memory of the new saint. "While preaching, he particularly insisted on the equality of all people, despite caste differences. This aroused the hatred of the higher classes, and he was arrested in 1749. After enduring increasing hardships, he received the crown of martyrdom when he was shot on 14 January 1752," a note prepared by the Vatican earlier had said. Sites linked with his life and death are in Kottar Diocese, in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. Devasahayam was declared Blessed on December 2, 2012, in Kottar's Nagercoil , 300 years after his birth. The Vatican cleared him for sainthood in 2020, this was the first Canonisation since 2019. His mortal remains were interred near the altar inside St Xavier's Church, Kottar, Nagercoil which is a diocesan Cathedral now. A rock on which the Saint is said to have been martyred in the area and possesses his knee and elbow marks is preserved here and visited by many

on pilgrimage. Special prayers were conducted at churches that are linked to his life in the Kottar diocese. At Thiruvananthapuram, Bishop Thomas J Netto led prayers at the St Joseph's Cathedral, Palayam and Neyyatinkara Bishop Vincent Samuel led the Pontifical mass at the St. Devasahayam Church in Chavallorpatta near Parassala under the Neyattinkara diocese. A vehicle rally was held from St Joseph's Cathedral, Palayam, Thiruvananthapuram to the St Antony's Pilgrim Church at Kamukincode on Saturday. This was to commemorate the visit of Devasahayam Pillai when he called on those who sought refuge in the locality after fleeing from being persecuted for having converted to Christianity. Catholic Bishop Conference of India (CBCI) laity secretary, V.C. Sebastian stated "conferment of sainthood to Devasahayam Pillai will rejuvenate the Christian community in the country, in particular the Catholic laity. present times". Others prominently canonised on May 15, 2022 at the Vatican : 1. Titus Brandsma, a member of the Carmelite religious order who served as president of the Catholic university at Nijmegen. He spoke out against anti-Jewish laws of the Nazi government and denounced Nazi ideology even before Second World War and the German invasion of the Netherlands in 1940. During the Nazi occupation, he urged Dutch Catholic newspapers not to print Nazi propaganda. He was arrested in 1942 and held in Dutch jails before being taken to Dachau, near Munich, where he was subjected to biological experimentation and killed by lethal injection the same year. He was 61 then. He was declared a martyr. 2. Father Charles de Foucauld, a 19th century French nobleman, soldier, explorer, and geographer who became a priest after experiencing personal conversion. He lived as a hermit among the poor Berbers in North Africa. He published the first Tuareg-French

dictionary and translated Tuareg poems into French. De Foucauld was killed during a kidnapping attempt by Bedouin tribal raiders in Algeria in 1916. 3. Cesar de Bus, a French Catholic priest who founded two religious congregations in the 16th century. He was a zealous preacher and catechist, who performed many works of charity. 4. Marie Rivier, a Frenchwoman who founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Presentation in 1796, at the age of 28, during the Reign of Terror. 5. Maria Domenica Mantovani, the first general superior of the Institute of the Little Sisters of the Holy Family, which she co-founded to serve the poor, orphaned, and the sick in Italy in 1892. 6. Maria Francesca of Jesus, a 19thcentury missionary founder, crossed the Atlantic Ocean seven times by boat to establish an order of Capuchin sisters in Uruguay, Argentina, and Brazil. 7. Luigi Maria Palazzolo, an Italian

priest known for having established the Sisters of the Poor, opened an orphanage, and worked for the poor. 8. Giustino Maria Russolillo, founded the religious congregations of the Vocationist Fathers, the Vocationist Sisters and of the Secular Institute of the Apostles of Universal Sanctification in Italy. The priest was devoted to educating young people and cultivating their vocations. The Vatican Scenario 2022 :

Canonisation

The raising to the altars of the Latin rite Roman Catholic Church , ten saints from five countries, the acceptance of the people was bubbling full of cheers as the names of the saints were read out. The South Indian, Italian and French presence were conspicuous by the presence of people from the respective countries. There are 10,000 plus officially declared saints in the Catholic Church. Some of their histories are spiked with myths and have been a challenge. However, the Catholic Church goes

on with their all important ritual to raise men and women of saintly nature to be official saints, the latest of which was the ceremony last Sunday May 15, 2022. Recent efforts to regularize the process of canonisation were the one by Pope Paul VI in 1969, the revision of the process in 1983 and the efforts by Pope John Paul II. It is stated that Pope John Paul II canonised more saints than the popes from the previous 500 years combined. Pope Francis too has been quick and generous in canonizing saints. From 2013 when he became Pope head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis has canonized 909 saints, which included 813 martyrs of Otranto as a group. Thus, he has already superseded John Paul II. The concept of sainthood is a riddle, while thousands of truly holy persons are ignored and people with clout get ahead. Saints as a concept are models who are for most mortals held up on altars for mediation and intercession. Holiness seemed reserved for a few. Pope Francis' practice of making

37 Veez Illustrated Weekly

saintliness and holiness a simple down to earth accessible virtue of earthly men and women is noteworthy. At the May 15 Canonisation he said, ‘Often, by over-emphasizing our efforts to do good works, we have created an ideal of holiness excessively based on ourselves, our personal heroics images, neglected our capacity for renunciation, our readiness of self-sacrifice in achieving a reward. In this way, we have turned holiness into a trade. The relevant reminder from Pope Francis remains this: “Holiness does not consist of a few heroic gestures, but of many small acts of daily love…Be holy by laboring with integrity and skill in the service of your brothers and sisters.” Saintliness has become more reachable and more down to earth. Everyone is called to be a saint, much like the days of early Christianity where every believer was called a saint. An invitation : The huge crowds that gathered in St. Peter’s Square on May 15 heard a call to saintliness

for every believer. You become a saint by being loved and loving. God has a dream for each one of the saints and each one of us, living our dreams to become saints. Pope Francis’ call is so simple, appealing and solidly challenging. “Are you called to the consecrated life? Be holy by living out your commitment with joy. Are you married? Be holy by loving and caring for your husband or wife, as Christ does for the Church. Do you work for a living? Be holy by laboring with integrity and skill in the service of your brothers and sisters. Are you a parent or grandparent? Be holy by patiently teaching the little ones how to follow Jesus. Are you in a position of authority? Be holy by working for the common good and renouncing personal gain..” The ceremonies of May 15 left two clear memorandums for people of the world : The call to holiness is for everyone. Holiness and saintliness are marked not in heroic activities only, but much more in the daily grind of loving each other, even our

enemies. It is in serving and striving for justice that saintliness is realized. May it become a people’s choice in this difficult world of today. Mangalore awaits cause of 'Servant of God Mgr Raymond F C Mascarenhas' (1875-1960) :

Challenge to Catholic Communicators

-*Fr. Cedric Prakash SJ On 15 May 2022, Pope Francis proclaimed ten outstanding women and men as Saints of the Catholic Church. Among them was Blessed Titus Brandsma, a Dutch Carmelite priest and journalist.Fr. Brandsma was named spiritual adviser to the Dutch Association of Catholic Journalists in 1935 and became its president after the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands. He worked with the Dutch bishops’ in crafting their message opposing Nazi ideology and the forced publication of propaganda in Catholic newspapers.

Following Germany’s invasion of the Netherlands in 1940, Brandsma defended the freedom of Catholic education and the Catholic press against Nazi pressure. In the face of great risk, he visited the offices of Catholic media outlets around the country over the course of ten days, encouraging editors to resist pressure to publish Nazi propaganda. His actions drew the ire of the Nazi regime who arrested him in 1942. Several months later, he was transported to the Dachau concentration camp where he was killed by a lethal injection of carbolic acid. He had to pay the ultimate price for his visible and vocal stand against Nazim. St. John Paul II, who beatified the Dutch priest on 3 November 1985, regarded him as a “valiant journalist” and a “martyr of freedom of expression against the tyranny of the dictatorship.” A few days before the canonization of Brandsma, hundreds of

40 Veez Illustrated Weekly

journalists from all over the world, wrote an open letter requesting the Holy Father to name the Dutch Carmelite as the patron saint of journalists. The letter is significant on several counts; the key aspects, relevant for all Catholic communicators today include, “In 2018 you asked us, journalists, loud and clear, ‘to promote a journalism of peace’, a ‘journalism that is truthful and opposed to falsehoods, rhetorical slogans, and sensational headlines. A journalism created by people for people, one that is at the service of all… a journalism committed to pointing out alternatives to the escalation of shouting matches and verbal violence’ (‘The truth will set you free’ (Jn. 8:32), Fake news and journalism for peace. Message of His Holiness Pope Francis for World Communications Day,24 Jan 2018). We wholeheartedly endorse your call to action and in it we recognize a mission statement for the whole of the journalistic enterprise: for old and new media, for editors of newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations, and internet platforms - and not only for

journalists of Catholic origin, but for all journalists of good will. On 15 May, in Rome, you will canonize a man who embodied these crucial journalistic values until his dying day: the Dutch Carmelite Father Titus Brandsma (1881 - 1942). Titus Brandsma has meant a lot to the Catholic community in the Low Countries, but his journalistic work stands out among all his other activities. He was editor-inchief of a newspaper, devoted himself to the modernization and professionalization of the Catholic daily press in the Netherlands, and strove for better working conditions and the establishment of a professional training for journalists. Father Brandsma did his work in the context of the rise of fascism and Nazism in Europe. In word and deed, he opposed the language of hatred and division that was becoming common at the time. In his view, what we now describe as ‘fake news’ was not to be tolerated in the Catholic press; he successfully argued for an episcopal ban on the printing of

41 Veez Illustrated Weekly

National Socialist propaganda in Catholic newspapers. He paid with his life for his courageous actions: in early 1942 Father Titus was arrested by the occupying forces and consequently sent to the Dachau concentration camp. There, on July 26 of the same year, he was killed by an injection, on the Sunday that the Dutch bishops had their courageous protest against the deportations of Jews read out in all the churches. We, Catholic journalists, recognize in Titus Brandsma a professional peer and fellow believer of considerable standing. Someone who shared the deeper mission that should drive journalism in modern times: a search for truth and veracity, the promotion of peace and dialogue between people. We therefore see him as a friend and advocate for our entire profession, indeed a patron saint of journalism. We would therefore like to boldly ask you to make this patron saint’s office official. The current patron saint of journalism is Francis de Sales. He is undoubtedly a holy man of faith

and of great merit, but he was not a journalist in the modern sense of the word. Titus Brandsma was. And as we said, he gave his life for it. In our view, this makes him particularly suitable for this patronage. According to UNESCO, in 2021, no less than 55 journalists died worldwide while carrying out their work. Many more had to deal with violence, threats, repression, censorship and persecution. The commitment to truth and humanity is extremely dangerous in these times of disinformation and polarization. This urgently requires a holy intercessor who has experienced this personally - and passed the ordeal with flying colours. “ The letter says it all: what Catholic Communications should be today; the fact that St. Brandsma courageously embodied its totality. It was certainly not easy for him; he had to face much hostility from the all-powerful fascists; he did not relent and had to pay with his life for his prophetic stand. There is plenty that Catholic Communicators all over – and particularly in India- need to learn from St Brandsma and also from

42 Veez Illustrated Weekly

the letter written by some renowned Catholic journalists to the Pope. More so, because on 29 May 2022, the Church all over the globe observes the 56th World Day of Social Communications (In India, it coincides with the Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord). The theme of Pope Francis’ powerful message is ‘Listening with the Ear of the Heart’. The theme is rooted in the Gospel of St. Luke ‘Take care, then, how you listen.’ (Lk8:18). The theme complements the 2021 message ‘Come and See’. Pope Francis in his opening statement says, “Last year we reflected on the need to “Come and See” in order to discover reality and be able to recount it beginning with experiencing events and meeting people. Continuing in this vein, I would now like to draw attention to another word, “listen”, which is decisive in the grammar of communication and a condition for genuine dialogue”. For Pope Francis, ‘listen’ is not something theoretical; it is the sine qua non for any catholic communicator who is interested in

authentic communications, through searching and arriving at nothing but the truth, just like the Master Communicator Jesus! One hears a common complaint today “nobody is listening!” Many experience this feeling – there is a painful story to share, a cry that needs to be heard – but nobody cares! That story, that cry becomes a voice crying in the wilderness! Is there someone listening? Does anybody care? In his message, Pope Francis throws a direct challenge to communicators: to listen and when you listen, to do so with the ear of your heart! In October 2021, Pope Francis launched the Synodal process with the theme “For a synodal Church: communion, participation and mission. The process will culminate with the 2023 Synod in Rome. Pope Francis has been insisting that the synodal journey is about listening, learning and loving. His Communications Day message reiterates this when he says, “A synodal process has just been launched. Let us pray that it will be a great opportunity to listen to one another. Communion, in fact, is not the result of strategies

43 Veez Illustrated Weekly

and programmes, but is built in mutual listening between brothers and sisters.” The question one needs to ask oneself: is there serious listening? Or is it lipservice: a tiresome formality without change? The painful reality is that, in several Dioceses the first phase has been sheer tokenism: an attitude of ‘it is a process which ‘had to be done’ – so let’s get over it as soon as possible!’ Are we listening to the cries of the poor and the vulnerable, the excluded and the exploited, the minorities and the other marginalised? When we listen with the heart, we are called to do something about it – we need to make a paradigm shift, to change; to ensure a better quality of life for all. Pope Francis says it rather strongly “human beings tend to flee the relationship, to turn their back and ‘close their ears’ so they do not have to listen. The refusal to listen often ends up turning into aggression towards the other, as happened to those listening to the deacon Stephen who, covering their ears, all turned on him at once.”

In this context, he once again highlights the plight of the migrants and their cries. We often treat them as outsiders: they are not like us, they do not ‘belong’ here! These suffer because of man’s inhumanity to man. They are the ‘other’! To this Pope Francis says, “The reality of forced migration is also a complex issue, and no one has a ready-made prescription for solving it. I repeat that, in order to overcome prejudices about migrants and to melt the hardness of our hearts, we should try to listen to their stories. Give each of them a name and a story. Many good journalists already do this. And many others would like to do it, if only they could. Let us encourage them! Let us listen to these stories! Everyone would then be free to support the migration policies they deem most appropriate for their own country. But in any case, we would have before our eyes not numbers, not dangerous invaders, but the faces and stories, gazes, expectations and sufferings of real men and women to listen to”. The reality of forced migrants is a key concern of Pope Francis’ papacy! Once again,

44 Veez Illustrated Weekly

we need to ask ourselves: are we listening to them with our hearts? In his message, Pope Francis does not spare Church. He calls for a Church that has the heart to listen. He says, “It is sad when, even in the Church, ideological alignments are formed and listening disappears, leaving sterile opposition in its wake.” In the final segment of his message, he emphasises the need and importance of ‘Listening to one another in the Church’ He says, “In the Church, too, there is a great need to listen to and to hear one another. It is the most precious and life-giving gift we can offer each other. Christians have forgotten that the ministry of listening has been committed to them by him who is himself the great listener and whose work they should share. We should listen with the ears of God that we may speak the word of God” He reserves his choicest words to so-called Catholic communicators, many of whom are frightened to be visible and vocal in standing up for truth and justice. Pope Francis urges them to develop their listening capacities. “Communication does

not take place if listening has not taken place, and there is no good journalism without the ability to listen…. In order to provide solid, balanced, and complete information, it is necessary to listen for a long time. To recount an event or describe an experience in news reporting, it is essential to know how to listen, to be ready to change one’s mind, to modify one’s initial assumptions.” He quotes the German Lutheran theologian Bonhoeffer, who like St Brandsma, was executed by the Nazis in 1945, “Thus, the Protestant theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer reminds us that the first service we owe to others in communion consists in listening to them. Whoever does not know how to listen to his brother or sister will soon no longer be able to listen to God either”. Strong words indeed if we have the courage to listen with the heart! On 1 May, Pope Francis paid tribute to journalists who have died or been jailed in the line of duty, defending a free press and praising those in the media “who courageously report on humanity’s wounds…I render

45 Veez Illustrated Weekly

homage to journalists who pay in person for this right”

nation? It is time then for introspection! It is time to change!

It is important then, for all catholic communicators to do an honest and objective evaluation of their writings, productions and other forms of communications. How many of these have genuinely responded to the cries of the poor and the vulnerable, the excluded and exploited, the marginalised and the minorities of the country? How many have written/done productions against the sedition, the UAPA and other draconian laws? the illegal incarceration of human rights defenders? the demonising of the Muslims? the anti-conversion laws? the three farm bills and the labour codes? The monstrous and extravagant Central Vista project? the denial of the legitimate rights of the Adivasis, Dalits, LGBTI? growing unemployment and spiralling prices? and much more? Do Catholic Communicators have the prophetic courage to take on the fascist and fundamentalist forces which are working overtime to destroy the sanctity of the Constitution and the secular, pluralistic fabric of our beloved

Meaningful communication is not about sophisticated centres, glossy publications or ‘projects’ to be run – but the ability to stand for and communicate the truth with prophetic courage. Pope Francis has been consistently challenging catholic communicators to live up to this call. His message this year is all about that. Besides, from this year, one has a saint in Titus Brandsma who lived his vocation to the fullest. Will catholic communicators in India then have the audacity to listen with ear of the heart, to stand up and be counted, to be witnesses for justice and truth today? A tough challenge indeed, but which must be responded to, because World Social Communications Day is also the Feast of the Ascension, when one is sent out to be his disciples, to witness to the good news, in the world today! 20 May 2022 *(Fr. What Modi should learn from Biden. Tops Friendly Markets grocery store is situated on Jefferson Avenue in one of Buffalo's most concentrated Black neighborhoods. 78% of the residents are people of color, according to a 2019 economic development report. American Community Survey data shows that the median household income in the neighborhood is less than $25,000. (Philip Mudartha) Armed with an assault-style rifle and tactical gear, an 18-year-old suspect arrived last Saturday afternoon at a Tops Friendly Markets grocery store in Buffalo, N.Y and shot people, ten of whom died and three injured. Of them 11 were Black. The suspect, who is white, is accused of being inspired by a racist theory that fueled the carnage. He wore a webcamera on his helmet and livestreamed the violent rampage on a social media platform.

'WHITE SUPREMACY IS A POISON':

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden traveled to Buffalo on Tuesday to visit a memorial for the victims before meeting with families, first responders and law enforcement officials. There, they placed a bouquet of white flowers at a memorial outside Tops supermarket. President Joe Biden said "white supremacy is a poison" and vowed "hate will not prevail". "What happened here is simple, straightforward terrorism," the

President said. "Domestic terrorism inflicted in the service of hate and a vicious thirst for power that defines one group of people being inherently inferior." Biden condemned the attack as a "murderous, racist rampage" and an act of "terrorism" as he called for the nation to unite against white supremacy. Biden also called on

Congress to act on gun reform to "keep assault weapons off our streets." "Hate will not prevail, and white supremacy will not have the last word," Biden said. "But evil did come to Buffalo. It's come to all too many places, manifested in young men who massacred innocent people in the name of hateful and perverse ideology rooted in fear and racism." "White supremacy is a poison," he added. "It's a poison running through our body politic that's been allowed to fester and grow right in front of our eyes." The president called out those who have pushed the "Great Replacement Theory" – the belief that white Americans are being systematically "replaced" by immigrants and minorities. He said that "through the media and politics," the Internet has "radicalized angry, lost and isolated individuals" into believing the theory. "I call on all Americans to reject the lie and I condemn those who spread

the lie for power, political gain and for profit," Biden said, "We've now seen too many times the deadly, destructive violence this ideology unleashes." Biden further said that those who fail to call out white supremacy are complicit as well: "Silence is complicity. We cannot remain silent." PM Modi, complicity:

over rumors and fake news, for food preferences and allegedly hurting religious sentiments. The recent incidents of targeted violence against Muslims have explicit majoritarian approval and implicit support of the middle class, judging by their silence, despite the Supreme Court describing lynchings

is

PM Modi has been silent even as the hateful and perverse ideology that Muslims and other minorities would outnumber the Hindus has spread like cancer into the body politic. In fact, Modi’s own hate speeches like “Hum, paanch, hamaare pacchis” (referring to a Muslim man, his four wives and five children per wife) have spawned newer hate speeches and delivered by his Hindutva propagandists. The spectre of mob lynching continues under relentless hate speeches and Hindu supremacy rallies. In recent years, India has witnessed people getting assaulted and killed

as a “sweeping phenomenon of mob violence". It is never late. PM Modi can borrow a leaf from President Biden. Biden is white and yet knows where truth and justice lie. The victims in India, the minorities, Dalits and other tribals do not expect Modi to visit the families of victims of the hate speech let loose by his followers. But least he could do is outright condemn the hatemongers!

Mankuthimma Kagga, teaching deep spiritual mythology in plain language, is one of the great literature of this world - Fr. Onil D'Souza.

Written by DV Gundappa, Mankuthimma Kagha presents various philosophies and deep spiritual principles in a simple language. This work fosters humanist thought, respecting the views of different peoples and promoting the notion that the human race is one and united. Although it may seem superficially worthy of rationalism, it is in fact spreading a noble theological idea that the goal of all thought is ultimately to unite in that strange power which is managing the whole

creation. We should use this work again and again in our daily lives and lead our minds to the deeper truths of the world, said Rev Fr Onil D'Souza, Parish Priest of the Corpus Christi Church, Moodabidri. He was speaking at the event Book release program held at St Aloysius College Mangalore. Mankutimmana Kagga, Kannada work of eminent Kannada poet DVG is translated by Prof Stephen Quadros Permude. The book ‘Mankutimmchen Kavyen is published by Kuvempu Bhasha Bharati Pradhikara. Registrar of the College Dr Alwyn D’Sa introduced the book. He opined that the presentation and the language used in the book is lucid. Poet uses the language which is contextual and at the same time universal. The elegance of this poem

is in its meaningful use of words, as in its wealth of meanings. The book is full of references from the Vedas, Upanishads, Epics and even from various scriptures. Great knowledge from all these is stored in this single work, in the mantle of Mankumtimana Kagga. Translating the poetry of this kind is a very challenging job, Stephen Quadros Permude has put in great responsibility in translating this masterpiece, he said. Chief Guest Dr Girish Bhat Ajakkala, President of Kuvempu Bhasha Bharati Pradhikara introduced the plans and missions of the Pradhikara. He, with examples, explained the life of DVG who lived up to the noble values that he has portrayed in his poetry. We come across the references from Kagga at least once a day; many have given testimony to the fact that their life has undergone a change for better because of reading this book. He told that it will be good for us to make use of this book and get light in the path of our daily life.

Principal Fr Praveen Martis SJ presided over the program. He appreciated the students for taking active part in the Konkani programs and asked them to take to reading Konkani works and attempt to create literature in Konkani. Mankutimmana Kagga is a great work and by bringing it into Konkani Prof. Stephen Quadros Permude has done a great service to our Mother Tongue. Translating any literature is a very tough and responsible work, especially while you translate poetry one has to try hard to maintain the meter, cultural meanings, theme, motif and other frameworks, Stephen Quadros has done good work by doing justice to all these. He also said that Stephen Quadros being an alumnus of St. Aloysius' College is a matter of goodwill for the institution. Mrs. Sevrine Pinto delivered the welcome speech. Prof. Stephen Quadros proposed the Vote of Thanks and Shri Rahul Noronha compeered the program.

UNLEASHING MAJORITARIANISM greater polarisation of the majority community in a country which prided itself for its pluralism and diversity.

-

*Fr. Cedric Prakash SJ

Fascists use manipulative strategies aimed at whipping up sympathy and support from the majority community, to which they normally ‘belong’. They do so in a variety of insidious and subtle ways. In the past few months, they have gone overboard in their efforts to denigrate and demonize minorities in India- particularly Muslims and Christians. They have spewed hate and divisiveness through their venomous speeches; incited people to violence and have effectively used officialdom to further their vested interests. The results are there for all to see:

Their meticulously planned agenda is in order to gain absolute power of the country in the 2024 National Elections. More so it is also a roadmap towards 2025 when the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) will complete one hundred years of its existence. The fascist ideology of the RSS is antiConstitution with the primary objective of declaring India as a ‘Hindu Rashtra’ as soon as possible; several of them speak about 2025! Whether the vast majority of the people of India, will actually allow them to make this wish come true, is at the moment, anyone’s guess. ‘Majoritarianism’ in the country though is alive and kicking! The latest conflict to hog national headlines is that of the Gyanvapi

mosque-Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi, which is a long-drawn dispute and goes as far back as 1991.According to reports, a Shivling was discovered within the disputed Gyanvapi premise’s Wuzukhana (the place where ablutions are performed). Reports claim that the Shivling was discovered after the water inside a pond like well, which is used as Wuzukhana by Muslims, was pumped out of it. After the Shivling was unearthed during the survey, on 16 May, a Civil Judge ordered the sealing of the disputed Gyanvapi structure. In its order, the court stated that the Shivling discovery is substantial evidence and asked the CRPF commandant to secure the premises and prevent Muslims from entering. However, on 17 May, the Supreme Court, issued notice on pleas challenging the orders of the District Court regarding the Gyanvapi Mosque and passed an interim order that while the area within the mosque where an alleged 'Shivling' was said to be found should be protected, Muslims must not be restricted from entering and praying in the

mosque. The Committee of Management of Anjuman Intezamia Masjid has been contending this order arguing that the court's directions are contrary to the provisions of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991, which specifically states that except for the Ram Janmabhoomi– Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, the nature of all places of worship shall be maintained as it was on 15 August 1947.The next hearing by the Apex Court is scheduled for 19 May. In a detailed and well researched article in the well-known news portal scroll.in, (18 May 2022) Umang Poddar writes, “Rather than dismissing them under the Places of Worship Act, 1991, courts often allow petitions against mosques to fester, thus helping Hindutva politics.” This is a worrisome trend that is taking place particularly in the lower courts when small -time judges to ensure their place in the sun and for their career promotions – bend over to cater to the whims and fancies of their political masters, giving no importance to impartiality and the future of the country.

Already since the past couple of years Hindutva elements have been disrupting the communal harmony in and around the archaeological site of the 416 years old, Our Lady of Health Church in Sancoale, in Goa and tried to perform some religious rituals in front of the Church. They have some preposterous claims, that the Church was built on the ruins of a Laxmi Narasimha temple; this, like several other temples which were apparently razed to the ground and Churches were built, some five hundred years earlier need to be rebuilt. In Karnataka, Pramod Muthalik, the founder and chief of the rightwing organisation ‘Sri Ram Sene’ continues with his vicious attacks on the Muslims and Christians. On 13 May addressing a gathering in Mysore he claimed that thousands of Hindus were being converted forcibly to Christianity stating, “Every day, thousands of Hindus are being converted into Christianity. The conversion is being done through deceit and force. The only way to deal this issue is by bringing a stringent law against conversion and by also

demolishing illegal churches by bulldozing them" A few days earlier members of his organisation were detained for playing Hindu devotional songs using loudspeakers to demand a ban on the azan. Fascists are also goebbelsian in their modus operandi. “Tell a lie a thousand times and people will believe it is the truth” was the axiom of Joseph Goebbels, the Minister for Propaganda in Hitler’s Reich(regime) from 1933 to 1945. Goebbels, at that time controlled every means of communication: from radio to cinema, from publishing to oral communications. Exactly what is happening in India today with godified media. It paid rich dividends for those in power – but with disastrous consequences for the ordinary people. The bogey of ‘conversion’ is clear example of a goebbelsian strategy being effectively used today. Lies, half-truths and divisive politics by the ruling regime have made anticonversion laws centre stage. The regime is proving to the world that they do not have the capacity or the competency to deal with serious

problems affecting the country today: from an economy which is on a downward spiral to growing impoverishment of the masses, from rising unemployment to a pathetic ranking in the social sector. The Karnataka Government recently took the ordinance route to give effect to the controversial and anti-Constitutional ‘Karnataka Right to Freedom of Religion Bill 2021.’ The law is violative of Article 25 of the Constitution. people eat and wear; the targeting of minorities when they worship – are all intricate pieces of a carefully planned agenda to rouse the sentiments of the majority community.

There is much more. The writing is on the wall! The key question at this moment is, if the members from the majority community have the vision and the sagacity to deal with this ‘majoritarianism,’ stop it at this juncture and ensure a better and more harmonious future for all? The directives from the Supreme Court on 19 May, regarding the Gyanvapi mosque imbroglio will hopefully be a new dawn towards this!
