Dear readers:
We lost a dear and loving jovial friend Cyril G. Sequeira, CGS Taccode today. It is hard to control the pain I felt as his close friend. I wanted to write an article about Dr. Edward Nazareth and my mind is not functioning properly today. I have published article written by Ivan J. Saldanha Shet in “Mangalore Today.” Couple of pictures are not shown fully and I don’t know the reason why. Please pardon me. -Dr. Austin Prabhu, Chicago, Editor 11 Veez Illustrated Weekly

the world getting empty. I was talking to the US President, and he also raised this issue. I suggested that if WTO gives permission, India is ready to supply food stock to the world from tomorrow” he elaborated, recalling his telecon with Biden.
The man has a big and loud mouth, infamous for his attention-seeking boasts. I am referring to our PM Narendra Modi. Speaking in his home state of Gujarat on 12 April 2022, he revealed that he has promised US President Joe Biden that India could feed the world. “Food stock in different parts of the world is dwindling due to the war in Ukraine. The world is facing a new problem now, with the food stock of
Then he was in Copenhagen, Denmark where he donned his Vishvaguru hat once more on 4th May 2022. Speaking to an adoring crowd of right-wing Hindu diaspora he explained: “India has helped the world during the difficult time and sent medicines to many countries so that we do not remain behind in
22 Veez Illustrated Weekly
humanitarian work during the crisis.” Further he said, India has offered food grains to save the world from hunger. A week later, India banned wheat exports. In a notification issued on 13th May 2022, government said “it would still allow exports for letters of credit that have already been issued and on the request from countries that are trying ‘to meet their food security needs’.” The policy flipflop came just days after saying it was targeting record shipments this year, as a scorching heatwave curtailed output and local prices hit an all-time high amid strong export demand. Prior to the ban, India was targeting to ship out a record 10 million tons during FY2022-23. The knee-jerk decision: The knee-jerk decision to ban wheat exports came after the government failed to purchase enough wheat for its massive food security program. It could mop up only about 18 million tons compared with nearly 44 million tons last year. That was
largely due to buoyant exports and a lower harvest following an unusually hot March impacting yields. Rising food inflation also pushed it to take a U-turn. In April, food prices surged 8.4% year-on-year, while overall retail inflation climbed to an eight-year high. Wholesale wheat prices rose
by 10.7% in April, maintaining double-digit growth since November last year. Wheat prices in India have risen to a record high, in some spot markets to as high as 25,000 rupees per metric ton, versus the government’s fixed minimum support price of 20,150 rupees. In FY2020-21, wheat production for India was about 108 million tons. The government was expecting production of 111 million tons this year. Though the government revised its estimate to 105 million
23 Veez Illustrated Weekly
tons, experts estimate that the output might drop to 95 million tons. The rising wheat prices in the spot markets suggest that the traders have their pulse on the wheat market statistics better than the government pundits. Eat rice and not chapatis: Besides the export ban, the
families will likely purchase it from the market, driving prices higher,” say market analysts. Also, Indians do not eat wheat but buy it to grind into flour from which unleavened chapatis are cooked just in time for a family meal. According to wheat flour experts, good quality wheat to flour yield in 770 gm/Kg. Due to heat wave, wheat quality is affected and this year the yield is expected to be 720gm/Kg. On account of this, the wheat flour prices are expected to be 110% over and above the increase in wheat prices. Fiasco after another fiasco:
government also reduced the allocation of wheat under the food subsidy program and substituted a chunk of it with public stocks of rice, which are in surplus. About 11 million tons of wheat saved this way is likely to be used to cool market prices later or for government-togovernment exports which are exempted from the ban. “But it won’t be easy to tinker with diets. If subsidized wheat isn’t available,
1. The November 2016 demonetization with less than 4 hours’ notice which led to nation-wide chaos outside banks. 2. The Covid fiasco: Modi bragged about how India, the world’s pharmacy, will save humanity. But a vicious outbreak of the delta variant forced it to backtrack. By 31 March 2022, India’s share of the global vaccine trade was just 2.3%. Just as with the

Environment to Save Mother Earth”-Bishop Gerald Lobo
Quoting “Laudato Si”, the Encyclical of Pope Francis issued few years ago, Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo said that we must preserve, protect and promote environment in order to save the Mother Earth for the future generations. As we take care of our own mothers so also we should take care of the Mother Earth and save her from environmental degradation. There are various ways by which we can preserve, protect
and promote environment. Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo made these observations while speaking at the prize distribution function held by Sampada on Saturday, 28 May 2022 at 10 am at the Mother of Sorrows Church hall. Prizes were distributed to the winners who had taken part in the competition based on the

Royson Fernandes-Editor of the Diocesan Fortnightly ‘Uzwaad’. In his introductory and welcome address, Fr. Reginald Pinto narrated the background of organizing the competition on environmental issues. Since February 2021, Fr. Reginald Pinto wrote a series articles on environmental issues and making an appeal to individuals, families, institutions, associations and self-help groups to take up these issues and participate in the competition. These articles of Fr. Reginald Pinto published in “Uzwaad” were collected by Fr. Royson Fernandes in the form of a book. --------------------------------------52 Veez Illustrated Weekly
Kiran Chalawadi is one of the 3L students from his KG days. His
father is a physically challenged person and mother works as a casual labourer in her village due to
paucity of work. From KG to 7th standard Kiran studied at Goa. From 8th to 10th he studied at Don Bosco School, Navanagar, Hubli. He is good at works with his hands but not too good in theoretical concepts. Yet, he secured 73% in tenth standard examination of April 2022! I was really surprised and overwhelmed by his performance. He is determined to pursue his further studies in Automobile Engineering sector only. Seeing his interest and determination, yesterday on 23rd May on the Birthday of my late mother, I got him admitted to K.L.E. Society’s Smt. C.I. Munavalli Polytechnic for three years course in Diploma of Automobile Engineering (AE). K.L.E. is a name as far as educational
institutions are concerned in Karnataka. It runs 270 plus known institutions in every discipline in Karnataka and certain parts of South Maharashtra. Getting an admission for Kiran in K.L.E's college itself was a miracle due to the intercession of my mother. There were many official documents to be submitted to complete the process of admission. The entire formality was completed by God’s grace today (24th) by noon. Wherever I went the officials were really cooperative. The Principal, Head of the Department of AE, and office staff Of the Polytechnic College were exceptionally friendly and cooperative to the fullest. For the first time, I experienced such a friendly and total cooperation in an educational institution.
The annual fee is rupees thirty five thousand, excluding the exam fees. Though as a rule the college takes rupees twenty thousand as donation, looking at Kiran and me, the Principal asked us to pay five

Wedding is celebration, Marriage is bonding, Family is happiness
Arranged weddings sounds bizarre in this digital world. Love marriages are gaining speed, but happy family is the key to cheerful life. Dancy and Harold D’Souza are a living role model of a happy arranged marriage. True to believe, Dancy and Harold are celebrating 10,227 days which is 1,456 weeks, or
336 months, i.e. 28 years of joyful marriage journey on May 29, 2022. They were happily married on May 29, 1994. Marlene and Russ O’Brien, parishioners of Saint Saviour Church, Cincinnati, Ohio spoke, “Two special people are celebrating 28 years of marriage on May 29th,

2022. Harold and Dancy D’Souza are an inspiration and beautiful example of a loving couple to all of us in Cincinnati, Ohio USA. Our family came to know this couple and their two boys when they joined our Saint Saviour Catholic Church
parish. As our friendship grew, we learned of their faith, love and courage for each other as they struggled to be free of a work trafficker. Harold is such a devoted husband and father that he literally put his life on the line for his wife and children. Dancy is his support and champion. We have been blessed to share our culture, our faith, and our families with each other.

For my part, I truly marvel at the devotion and commitment Harold and Dancy have for each other. As a very independent thinking American woman, I am in awe of their story of an arranged marriage that has blossomed into such a beautiful love story. Then arrived the day of May 29, 1994 when Harold and Dancy were joined in matrimonial bliss. Dancy gave him greater strength, impetus and courage to scale new heights in his career. When October 1995 saw me leave the NUWUD MDF Family, there were only few team members Nationally who stood by my side – Harold D’Souza in the forefront with my secretary Rita Dhir, S. Behind every smiling man is a caring, understanding, and affectionate lady, said Harold D’Souza Sister Therese DelGenio, Sisters of Mount Notre Dame de Namur shared her personal feelings; “My first encounter with this amazing couple was a horrible, yet GRACED experience. Let me explain. When I moved to Cincinnati, my religious community and I committed ourselves to learn about and to work toward eradicating human trafficking in any form, but especially labor and sex trafficking. We enlisted the support of eight other religious orders who
met regularly for on-going education. It was to such a meeting, that a social worker brought Harold and Dancy to share their story and to give “a face to local labor trafficking.” They spoke with such honesty about the abuse they and their two little boys experienced at the hands of a ruthless trafficker who even hired someone to assassinate Harold! I was moved to tears at hearing what each suffered and was amazed at the many ways Harold and Dancy supported each other throughout the ordeal while doing their best to care for and to protect their sons. As soon as they were freed from their trafficker, Dancy and Harold volunteered their services at their parish church and inculcated the value of volunteering to help others into their sons. They have grown into such remarkable men, so gifted and generous. It came as a surprise to me later on to learn that Harold and Dancy were in an arranged marriage.
