Contents Early and personal life Sunil Furtado hails from Barkur in Udupi Diocese. Barkur is a serene and beautiful small town located in a picturesque setting on the bank of the Seetha river and at a close proximity to the Arabian Sea and Western Ghats. only reasons for Barkur being well known. Barkur was the ancient capital of the Alupa kingdom known as Tuluva rulers. It was a flourishing port in the 15th and 16th centuries. Barkur was also the Provincial Capital of Hoysalas. It reached its peak during Vijayanagara dynasty (1336 – 1664) rule being the gate way of business to Africa, Afghanistan, Asia Minor, Greek and Roman Empire and Egypt. It is also called ‘Temple town’ as it housed 365 temples within its periphery at one time and many of them still exist in their full glory.

Sunil Furtado was born on May 9, 1968 and is the last among nine children of Joseph and Josephine Furtado. He had seven older brothers and a sister. Both his parents hailed from well-known families in Barkur. His father was from Nagarmutt Furtado family, while his mother belonged to Kalmargi Sequeiras. Sunil’s paternal grandfather, Gasper Furtado, was a farmer cum tailor, while his maternal grandfather, Thomas Sequeira, was a postmaster. Sunil’s father Joseph Furtado left Barkur at the age of 17 and reached Mumbai searching for greener pastures. His bold and enterprising ability saw him owning two tailoring shops in Mumbai’s most prominent areas at that time, Fort and Colaba, within a matter of a few years. His mastery in his craft saw people flocking to his shops and he was considered a successful entrepreneur of his time. In turn he could support his family well from Mumbai while his wife, Josephine, took care of their children in Barkur. 3 Veez Illustrated Weekly


Sunil’s Parents : Joseph & Josephine Furtado

Sunil did his primary schooling in Barkur from Maryknoll Higher Primary School. This initial phase of his life spent in the rural setting of Mangalore shaped the rest of his life. It is here that he got closely involved with the church and church activities like altar serving, performing skits on stage, dances, etc. Bishop Henry D’Souza, the current Bishop of Bellary Diocese still recalls Sunil as an alter server during his term as Asst. Parish Priest in Barkur Parish as Sunil would accompany him whenever he would visit the parishioners for house blessing or for Sacrament of anointing the sick, etc. 4 Veez Illustrated Weekly


Sunil and Politics Sunil developed a strong interest in politics in the year 1977 when he was only 9 years old as the whole country was blazing with the impeding political change after the Emergency. The highly charged up political scenario, Lok Sabha elections, emergence of Janata Party and oratory skills of leaders like George Fernandes influenced Sunil and made him attend several election rallies at the age of 9 itself. He imagined himself to be a political leader and would reel out speeches even when no one was around to listen to him. From then on, he kept himself abreast with all political developments by reading various newspapers and magazines. He contested the school elections in grade 6 but lost by a whisker. Nevertheless, he continued to pursue his goals and was elected as School President in grade 10 of a much bigger school in Mumbai. He served as a Welfare Secretary in his Management College. His political ambitions remain an enigma. After Sunil completed grade 7, the family decided to shift base to Mumbai and he continued his studies in Mulund, a suburb in Mumbai. He graduated majoring in Physics from University of Mumbai. He went on to pursue his master’s in business administration (MBA) in Marketing & Systems from the prestigious management school T A Pai Management Institute, Manipal (1989-91).

St Peter’s Association (Barkur) Mumbai Sunil kept his zeal to serve the community burning even in Mumbai. Several youngsters who came from Barkur to make a living in Mumbai joined together and formed an Association called St. Peter’s Catholic 5 Veez Illustrated Weekly


Youth Association (Barkur) Mumbai in the year 1985 with the intention of fulfilling various needs of the youth coming to Mumbai without a proper support system. Sunil was probably the youngest founder member of this Association, which was later renamed as St Peter’s Association (Barkur) Mumbai. It is now in the forefront of many social activities and is one of the most active Mangalorean Catholic Associations of Mumbai.

His major breakthrough came about when he was selected as a Management Trainee by the renowned Raymonds Limited, Mumbai. A training covering all the facets of business activities of the group and then working as an Asst. Manager-Exports gave a solid foundation to his career. Thanks to Raymonds, his international exposure started very early in his career. With such a solid background, it was not a surprise that the prestigious group of Oman, Suhail & Saud Bahwan picked him up for a key role in their Toyota operations in 1995. 6 Veez Illustrated Weekly


Sunita Furtado Sunil married Sunita Rodrigues in the year 2003. Sunita hails from a Mangalorean Catholic family based in Orlem, Mumbai. Her Father John Rodrigues is from Gurupur and mother Olivia Fernandes though originally from Kulshekar, was born and brought up in Bombay. Sunita is a Science graduate from the prestigeous St Xavier’s College. She also holds Post Graduate degree in English. She is working at The American International School of Muscat (TAISM) for the past 12 years. Sunita is a multi-faceted personality herself with talents in painting, dancing, and singing. By nature she is a shy and introverted person and tried her best to avoid being in the limelight. However, things changed subsequent to Sunil taking up leadership roles in the community as she has lent her support at different levels during various 7 Veez Illustrated Weekly


events, and also performed on stage during the cultural events of MCCP and GMCC. During the pandemic lock-down she joined her good friend and wellknown talented dancer and choreographer, Anu Gokul, to put up several dance videos for the latter’s YouTube channel. She is also an active in the Ghala Parish. She is a well-known catechist in the parish for the last 8 years. She has also lent her voice occasionally to the choir ministry. She has always been a strong support to Sunil and helped him in every possible way to serve the community. With her valuable input, and suggestions, she has been able to offer a broader perspective and guidance to Sunil in many ways to enhance his contribution towards the community.

For the last 27 years, Sunil has served the prestigious Saud Bahwan Automotive Group in Muscat in various capacities and currently holds the post of Senior Manager. Professionally, he specialises in Product 8 Veez Illustrated Weekly


Management, Sales & Marketing, Franchise Management, Overseas Customer Relationship Management etc. Sunil’s work has taken him to many parts of the world which according to him has fine-tuned his personality. Particularly his frequent visits to Japan and close association with the Japanese have had the maximum influence on Sunil. Their respect for human beings, humility, meticulous and hardworking nature has left a deep impression on Sunil which he has tried to imbibe to the best of his ability.

Johan and Zephan Furtado Sunil and Sunita have two children, Johan and Zephan, aged 15 and 17 years respectively. They study in grades 12 and 10 at the Indian School Muscat. They are bright youngsters standing on the threshold of their lives. As their parents have instilled good values in them, they appear to have imbibed the goodness and gentle nature of their parents, and are slated to achieve greater heights in their life. While, being a high profile executive in a demanding profession and a competitive environment helped Sunil to scale the corporate ladder swiftly, it had its own pitfalls. He could hardly focus on any social causes or pursue any activities of his interest. This disturbed him for a long time. The opportunity to change the track came in the year 2015, after about 20 years being in the thick of action and Sunil grabbed the chance. 9 Veez Illustrated Weekly


As if it was God’s providence, Sunil’s change of job profile and offer to become the Honorary Treasurer in MCCP came together. He served under the Presidentship of John Gonsalves for the term 2015-16 and imbibed the first lessons of community management. Sunil worked closely with John and was instrumental in conducting innovative programmes like Quiz Contest conducted by a professional Quiz Master and Talents Day. As this term at MCCP finished, Edward Mendonca who took as President of Ghala Mangalorean Catholic Community (GMCC) approached Sunil to become his deputy and offered him the Post of Vice President. Sunil being very passionate about Ghala parish had no hesitation in joining the team. This team under the leadership of Edward and Sunil completely changed the outlook of GMCC and made it a vibrant Community body. For the first time, GMCC looked beyond Monthi Fest and started having certain community based programmes/ events to meet the aspirations of the community. Three main influencers in Sunil’s initiation into Community Service It all started in the year 2012, when Fr Albert D’Souza being the Parish Priest of Ghala initiated a Holy Land trip for the faithful. As they were running short of people for this trip, John Gonsalves contacted Sunil to know whether he is interested to join. Sunil’s joining this trip without any hesitation despite children being small (7 yrs & 5 yrs each) was the beginning of Sunil’s initiation into Parish as well Community Service. Close interaction with Fr Albert during the trip helped Sunil to develop positive vibes towards Church and its Activities. When Fr Albert asked him to get into some Church related matters, Sunil readily offered his services as a Catechism Teacher as he had some experience as a teacher and was confident that he can do a decent job. When Sunil was continuing as a Catechism Teacher, Michael Goveas a wellknown community leader of Ghala Mangalorean Community approached him to become the Eucharistic Minister in the year 2014.

In the year 2015, John Gonsalves took over as President of MCCP (Mangalorean Catholic Community of the Parish) and he called upon Sunil to join his Executive Committee team (Team-24) as a Treasurer. Coincidently, it was only a month back Sunil had changed his field of work and envisaged some time for himself/ pursuing his hobbies. He took the post though he had no knowledge about MCCP and its working. This was the beginning of a long journey for Sunil Furtado. Sunil’s strong presence and visible contribution to both Ruwi and Ghala Parish reached the ears of the MCCP elders (Core committee) and when they started looking for the next MCCP President, Sunil’s name cropped up as one of the probable candidates. MCCP having completed 25 years of existence, Team25 under the President Dilip Correa along with Silver Jubilee Committee had put up a grand show befitting to the occasion. Taking over reins of the MCCP after such mega events and difficult economic situation prevailing in Oman at that time, was considered as a difficult task by many. That drove away several aspirants from taking over MCCP Presidentship in the year 2017-18 and the onus fell on Sunil. was very confident about Sunil‘s ability and was very keen that Sunil becomes the President of MCCP. Sunil could not say no to such a strong request and very warily agreed to take over the President ship of MCCP 2017-018 It was a roller coaster ride for Sunil from then on. It was the first time for Sunil to shoulder such a big responsibility of running a community and with very little background knowledge of working of MCCP. The Executive Committee Team-26 that he assembled was mostly consisted of persons whom he hardly had any interaction before but we went ahead relying on his own goodness and goodness of the community. His team though consisted of some wellknown personalities; had very little experience in community / event management. Realising the strengths as well as weaknesses of the team made Sunil even stronger and taught him to not to get bogged down by any adverse persons/ situations. Sunil will remain highly grateful to all those who stood by him in these difficult times particularly from within the Executive Committee.

only managed to conduct all possible events that are normally done but also added special programmes/ initiatives as below, ➢ Wilson Olivera Musical show ➢ Academic and Career success Work shop ➢ Mega Quiz Show ➢ Completely revamped interactive MCCP website ➢ On-line registration of members The Wilson Olivera Musical show was a phenomenally successful event with audience more than 800. The show was conducted on May 11th 2018 at Al Falaj Hotel Auditorium. The LED backdrop stage, high resolution sound and lighting system made the show one of the top quality shows in Oman. Wilson and Ronald Olivera and their entire team of Singers, musicians, comedy skit performers etc together put up an excellent show. The quality of Konkani shows was never been so high. The local musicians, dancers etc also did a commendable job and made everyone proud. Some of the comments received in the Daijiworld were, •

Roy Rodrigues, Ruwi - Muscat / Kavoor, Mangalore Fantastic Show. I can say this was one of the best show I have every seen for past couple of years in muscat. Hatts off to you Sangeeth Sardhar Wilson Olivera. You made konkani proud. All songs were too good Ek Se Bad Kar Ek. Comedy was excellent. MC was outstanding. All the singers, musicians and Dancers gave their best. Overall I can say this was Entertainment! Entertainment! Entertainment! We expect same kind of quality programs in Muscat in future as well. Totally, it was a wonderful and memorable event. During this entire tenure of Sunil’s Presidentship of MCCP, he was still continuing as Vice President of Ghala Mangalorean Catholic Community (GMCC) as Edward Mendonca, the President and EC team did not allow him to resign. So when the MCCP term ended in May 2018, he was back into the thick of action in Ghala Parish. The Monthi Fest celebration, Food Festival, Konkani Diwas were some of the programmes conducted by GMCC in 201819. It was then time for change of guard in GMCC and a new person was to be identified to take over from Edward, who had a successful term. Again Edward, Community leaders as well Parish priest were unanimous in their conviction that Sunil must now become President of GMCC for the year 201921. Considering everyone’s request Sunil took over the Presidentship of GMCC in Feb, 2019 and formed an Executive Committee.

Sunil by now had become well versed with running a community Association, took lot of care to ensure that lessons learnt from MCCP experience are not lost.

Sunil increased the strength of Executive

committee and assembled a fantastic team of persons. The Executive committee members were Prem Colaco (Vice presidentfinance), Nirmala Goveas (Vice president-cultural), Ophelia Lazarus (General secretary), Helen Sequeira (Spiritual secretary), Alwin Fernandes (Finance secretary), Linda D’Souza (Cultural secretary), Naveen Mathias (Choir secretary), Ajay Barboza (Techno-support secretary), Joel D’Souza (Sports secretary), Roshan Saldanha (Community Services secretary) and Prakash D’Sa (Internal auditor). The enthusiasm in the team was very high and all of them wanted to take the GMCC to a higher level. Sunil had to direct that energy level in the right direction and get the best out of them. The first programme was Easter Joy (Paskafestacho Dabajo) which was held in the month of April, 2019. This event planned by Nirmala Goveas and was well supported by all. The event was well received. GMCC then had enactment of Passion of Christ in English on the main stage of the parish, which brought out the Lent season’s prayerfulness among all the parishioners. Then in the month of September, Monthi fest celebration again created history with its massive scale, LED backdrop, huge amount of entertainment not seen 16 Veez Illustrated Weekly

Each of these programmes set a bench marks for future

events and more programmes were in the offing for the year 2020. Unfortunately no major activities could be conducted with the onset of Corona.

Hence during the years 2020 and 2021, the committee

concentrated more on charitable works and helped a large number of people in distress. A significant amount was spent on medical / funeral expenses and grocery provision to the needy.

Their term too got

extended by a year and woouls last till April 2022 instead of Feb 2021. In 2022, in view of pandemic getting subsided, Sunil decided to have an event to help the Community members come out of lock-down mode to normal life once again. Easter eve provided the right backdrop for the same and Easter Joy event was planned. It also provided a platform for handing over the reins of the community to the new committee under the new leader Prem Colaco. The organizers had left no stone unturned to make this event a memorable one. True to their efforts, the much awaited “Easter Joy” created history for being one of its kind and exceeding the expectations of the attendees by far.

The energy, verve and spirit among the

participants soared incredibly high in Sohar Ball room of Safeer Plaza Al Khuwair. Its success proved that the community spirit is still burning bright.

Kudos to GMCC committee headed by Sunil Furtado for meticulously planning and arranging it. I missed it personally since on vacation. GMCC for the last four years under the able leader ship of Sunil and very enthusiastic committe members has conducted many programmes, has helped the needy specially during Covid 19 pandemic and has been a very strong supporter in church activities. Congratulations to the entire committee. Now that the baten has handed over to Prem Colaco, an able and experienced leader who has worked for the community last many years, we are confident he and his new team will take the community affairs to new heights. Sunil and his foray into public speaking, teaching and Acting He has been actively involved in various forums that promote growth and development of individuals as well as the community at large. He believes that this ability has come because of his interest in teaching, public speaking, acting and other such areas. In Mumbai, immediately after graduation in Science, he has called by one of the best Tuition classes of that time in Mumbai to teach Mathematics and Physics to 10th std students. He had a great rapport with the students and children taught by him achieved good results. Alas, he had to select between MBA and continuing as Teacher. As he decided to pursue MBA, his teaching remained his unfulfilled passion till be joined catechism Ministry in Muscat. He presently teaches Catechism to Teenagers (called LIFETEEN series) and hailed as a new age teacher who can keep the interest of the students in Catechism even after they have received Confirmation. Children just love to attend his Sessions.

Being an excellent orator himself, he has been able to make his presence felt and drive home the point that he intends to make. No doubt that he has held various posts in the Toastmasters Club. He last served as VP (Public Relations) in the Saud Bahwan Toast Masters club. He also won several contests in the Muscat region. He forayed into acting as well and his enactment of Jesus in the Passion of Christ tableau at Ghala parish was highly appreciated and considered as a powerful and extremely moving on-stage performance.

Sunil’s extraordinary contribution to Ghala Parish: Besides his role in the community, he has been a whole hearted and devoted member of the Ghala Parish. He plays many roles in the Holy Spirit Church. He is a Catechism teacher for High school students for the last 10 Years. He is deeply involved in faith formation of children and teenagers. For six years, Sunil served the Parish as a Eucharistic Minister. He also served in the Lector ministry. He has been Parish council member for the last 3 years. It is quite possible that his close involvement in the Church activities has led to his pious demeanour, humility, patience and pleasant disposition even in trying situations.

Thoughts of Sunil Furtado when he took over the Presidentship of MCCP Sunil Victor Furtado, the president for the year 2017-18 is the man at the helm of affairs. He is very upbeat and expressed satisfaction at the progress of the preparations for the function. We met Sunil Furtado ahead of the inaugural day to understand his thoughts and bring out the charming flavours of ideas

that would shape the new era through Team-26. He was honest with his views but robust in his conviction. Here are the excerpts from an interview with him. 1. What is it about this position that is of interest to you? Ans: The call to serve the community prompted me to take up the post of MCCP president, although I was sceptical in the beginning. The role of being MCCP’s president is challenging and carries a lot of responsibility with it. Most importantly, he/she has to live up to the expectations of the community members. Being an energetic person with a positive outlook, I have always thrived on challenges. As a president, one needs to understand people, their sentiments, their inhibitions, and bring them all together under one umbrella. Fortunately, there have been many individuals who have bolstered my confidence by promising to support me and my team throughout the year. I also have a highly motivated and energetic team which gives me further assurance and boosts to my morale. I personally feel that MCCP is a medium that God has chosen for me to serve the society. I am confident that as president, I will be able to do justice to the faith that the people have in me and I will carry out my responsibilities with complete honesty, sincerity and dedication. 2. What challenges are you looking for in this association as a president of Team-26? Ans: As I have stated earlier, I welcome challenges. We are up against many odds to run the show. As president, I will strive to maintain the high standards that have been set by previous committees and endeavour to take it a few levels higher despite various constraints that prevail in Oman at present. We need to have a vision of looking beyond the present and work towards achieving a better tomorrow. 26 Veez Illustrated Weekly


At the same time, I want to shift the focus of MCCP from being a cultural and entertainment provider to involve the members in activities such as life skill development, social responsibility and also spiritual growth. To bring about this change will be my biggest challenge as the new president of MCCP. 3. What are your development areas – things you are trying to improve? Ans: It is my thinking that the feeling of being a Mangalurean does not come purely because of our common language, common native place or common culture. It is much deeper and that it is our values and ethos that have got inculcated in us being Mangalureans. A large number Mangalureans are now scattered all over the world. Their children as well as grandchildren have now grown and they need to be brought into the community. They will participate actively only when they can be engaged and get connected with what is going on in the association. I strongly feel that if we don’t bring our next generation into the community, an association like MCCP has no future. Our youth today are very talented. To achieve their wholehearted participation, we may need to modify our programs by making them more vibrant, lively and much more interactive. We may have to simplify the language so that they can understand. We also need to encourage them and instil confidence so that they come forward and showcase their talents in various fields. I know this change will not happen overnight. But we need to make a beginning in order to carry on the legacy of MCCP for many more years to come. 4. What are the plans and preparation for the events during your tenure? Ans: A variety of programmes has been lined up by Team-26 for the year that will cover a wide range of areas. The organization aims at making the forthcoming year a memorable one by bringing more and more families to 27 Veez Illustrated Weekly


take part in the events thereby strengthening the bond within the Mangalurean community in Oman. The inaugural ceremony will feature the blend of modern and traditional culture with several dance programmes, skits, musical entertainments, etc. The 26th year of the organization will be celebrated with the theme 'Share our similarities, celebrate our differences', which is a thought provoking statement and aims to bring the entire community together. It is clear that the new president, who spoke passionately about simplicity, humility and spirituality during the last annual day has some ground breaking plans for MCCP, which would change the course of this quarter century old association and herald a new era.

CAPT SACHIN REUBEN SEQUEIRA (04272-H) Citation Capt Sachin R Sequeira is currently appointed as the Commanding

Officer of INS Kochi. During the recent cyclonic storm Tauktae in the North Arabian Sea, INS Kochi, under his able leadership, undertook Search and Rescue Operations, in extremely challenging weather and sea conditions, resulting in saving over 125 lives from the stricken Barge P 305 at the Offshore Development Area (ODA). On 17 May 21, the ship was sailed with dispatch to render assistance to Barge P-305, which was sinking under the influence of the severe

cyclonic storm Tauktae, off the ODA. On being directed to sail with dispatch, the ship was successfully able to prepare and cast off within one hour under extremely challenging conditions of 40-45 kns winds, blinding rain and nil visibility. Displaying thorough professionalism, exemplary leadership, the officer guided the ship to close the stricken barge, giving the distressed crew reassurance of assistance by the Indian Navy. The increasing perilous conditions of 50 kns winds, swell height of above 10 mtrs, sea state 7/8 and intense spells of rains, precluded rescue by boat, Gemini divers or shore-based air ops. Faced with extremely limited options, the officer took the bold decision of maneuvering the ship to close and recover survivors directly from the sea. This demanded utmost courage, bold action, adept ship handling and astute thinking as the drift in area was over 5 kns and swell conditions resulted in violent ship motions. The survivors were closed nonetheless and were recovered onboard through various innovative ways such as use of

scramble nets jumping ladders and lines. The Officer, keeping the mission of saving lives foremost, over and above the safety of his own team and the ship, led and guided his officers and ship’s company tirelessly throughout the day & night over a period of 36 hours. His courageous action, motivation of the crew and composed decision making enabled rescue of 125 personnel, including over 65 survivors recovered in dark hours, without injury or loss of life of his crew. The successful and daring execution of the Search and Rescue Operation under unprecedented stress and extreme rough weather highlights the extraordinary leadership, professionalism, and fortitude of the officer. This brave act of leadership and courage was in keeping with the ethos of the Navy and in service of the Nation in times of peril and adversity. For his extraordinary bravery, courageous leadership, exemplary grit and determination, in the face of extremely challenging conditions, the officer is recommended for the award of Shaurya Chakra.

Their only son Ken is a multi-faceted personality and a shining great soccer player with many trophies to his credit. Canada’s Konkani music maestro Ashith Glen Pinto has carried out the music arrangement and direction for the music album. His recent arrival to the beautiful shores of Canada has given new inspiration to many Konkani-speaking people, especially Konkani singers living in Canada. A versatile musician of Konkani, worked tirelessly to furnish a new and modern dimension to Konkani music in Mangaluru. He was instrumental in organizing and presenting, of its kind marathons and a successful singing competition, ‘Mhozo Thallo Gaithalo’ involving many Konkani singers of the coastal Karnataka region and then, also the Gulf countries. My mom was a great Alto singer. During my childhood, I used to get special training from my grandparents (My mom's parents), my uncle Oswald and aunty Rita who really helped me improve in music. Singing in the church choir in Mangaluru, Dubai and Canada. I used to participate and win in various singing competitions held at school and in college days and also at various other events having singing competitions at the inter-parish level and at Don Bosco in Mangaluru as well as at Mangalore Konkans in Dubai. I should say my mom's family members are my main gurus in music who really encouraged and motivated me. Apart from that, I was also taking training in classical music from Pramesh Nandi sir at Swargunjan Music Academy in Brampton, Canada. At present my Guru is Roshan Martis from Mangaluru from whom I am getting trained in Hindustani classical music. Q. What are your major achievements both in India and abroad? A: Competing and winning in various singing competitions. It was a privilege for me to get an opportunity to sing in the re-creation of ‘Ye Ye

Jezu Mogalla’ composed by my uncle Apolinaris D'Souza. Also got a chance to sing with Mandd Sobhaan team at Mando Fest in Mangaluru, Daiji Dubai event in Dubai, getting elected as an eastern music secretary in college cabinet at St Agnes.Winning in the singing competition at Don Bosco by only 3 participants and getting a shield to Vamanjoor parish. It was an honor to sing in Canada with various singing legends like the late Wilfy Rebimbus group, Henry D'Souza, Claud D'Souza and Melwyn Peris organised by Canara World Foundation and with Eric Ozario at an event organised by Mangalorean Association of Canada. Q. You have performed with some of the best Konkani singers & composers. Who is your favorite composer? A: For me, all composers are equally good as each composer compose the music in their own unique style in a different way. So, I do not have a specific favorite composer. Q. What motivated you to lead such a video as ‘Motiyam So’r’?

A: My passion for music. 'Mothiyam So'r' video is a blessing from God, I am just an instrument who played the role. We have amazing konkani composers in Mangaluru who have composed beautiful songs/music and who have made this Konkani language rich. Many of them know these beautiful numbers but are not aware who the original composer is, so I wanted to revive some of these songs to promote our wonderful legends by giving them a tribute and honour through this musical medley, as well as I wanted to showcase the incredible talents that we have here in Canada. Q. Don’t you feel proud of your incredible achievement in music? A: I still have to learn and do lot more in music in the future. I hope my

passion for music will help me to contribute more to music. Q. What is your message for your fans, the Konkani diaspora in Canada and the rest of the world? CGS Taccode passes away at 71 Born in Taccode, Cyril did his earlier education in Taccode, Moodbidri and Bengaluru. CGS started to write in Konkani when he was 12. He was writing since the last 5 decades. He was the sub editor of Raknno weekly. Later he also worked as the editor of ‘Kannik’ and ‘Umallo’ Konkani periodicals. CGS, though has written in all forms of literature, was more known for his humorous writings.

‘Only One Earth!’

-*Fr. Cedric Prakash SJ Come 5 June, the world will once again be ‘celebrating’ ‘World Environment Day’! There will be the usual plethora of events, plenty of fanfare and with many competing for ‘photo-ops’ to show how much they are doing for the environment! There will be the ‘mad rush’ to plant saplings, for politicians to take to the broom, on streets which have already been sanitized and cleaned earlier and above all, a slew of speeches on the environment! Plenty of cosmetic activity and

tokenism! This is in no way to denigrate the significance of the day. If there is one clear message of this annual observance, it is the powerful reminder that unless we show unflinching courage to address endemic issues and take on the powerful vested interests who are destroying the environment- we will not be doing enough to save our common home! World Environment Day is the biggest international day for the environment. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and held annually since

1974, it has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach. It is ‘celebrated’ by millions of people across the world. The theme for World Environment Day 2022 is ‘Only One Earth’, and focuses on living sustainably in harmony with nature. This theme actually was the slogan for the 1972 Stockholm Conference. Fifty years down the road, this truth still holds – this planet is our only home. With nature in an emergency mode, the #OnlyOneEarth campaign advocates for transformative environmental change on a global scale. The campaign shines a spotlight on climate action, nature action and pollution action while encouraging everyone, everywhere to live sustainably. While our individual consumption choices do make a difference, it is collective action that will create the transformative environmental change we need, to advance to a more sustainable and just Earth, where everyone can flourish. Thirty years ago in 1992, the Earth Summit (UN Conference on Environment and Development) in Rio de Janeiro

sounded the alarm bells! But is anyone listening? On May 24, 2015, Pope Francis gave to the world his path-breaking and incisive Encyclical Letter ‘Laudato Si '-On Care for Our Common Home. It was the first major Papal teaching on a subject of critical importance namely ‘the environment’. ‘Laudato Si ' meaning “Praise be to you" are the first words of the celebrated ' Canticle of the Creatures' of St Francis of Assisi. The Encyclical which came months before the landmark 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, (COP 21) which was held in Paris, in fact set the tone for world leaders, to come to grips with real causes which were responsible for environmental degradation and which ultimately caused climatic changes with disastrous results everywhere. Those who take the encyclical seriously are aware of its significance in addressing key issues which destroy the environment today. Pope Francis sets the tone of the

Encyclical in his opening statement, which is “to address every person living on this planet”. He says “this sister (mother earth) now cries out to us because of the harm we have inflicted on her by our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her. We have come to see ourselves as her lords and masters, entitled to plunder her at will. The violence present in our hearts, wounded by sin, is also reflected in the symptoms of sickness evident in the soil, in the water, in the air and in all forms of life” He states, in the first Chapter that “we cannot adequately combat environmental degradation unless we attend to causes related to human and social degradation” ; he deals here with several ‘aspects of the present ecological crisis’: pollution, waste and the throwaway culture; climate as a common good; displacement and migration caused by environmental degradation; access to safe drinking water as a basic and universal human right; loss of bio-diversity;

decline in the quality of human life and break down of society; global inequality. He also denounces unequivocally the use of pesticides and the production of genetically engineered (GE) crops. Pope Francis strongly notes that “the earth’s resources are also being plundered because of short-sighted approaches to the economy, commerce and production”. In making such statements, in taking a stand for the ‘care of our common home’, Pope Francis has indeed created several enemies among the rich and powerful-who are bent on profiteering; those engaged in the extractive industry by plundering very precious and scarce natural resources. Pope Francis has been in consistent in his love for the poor and his commitment to the protection of the environment. Throughout the Encyclical, insists that we have been called to be stewards of the creation which God has entrusted to us. He ensures that ‘Laudato Si’ focuses on human rights violations and injustices. He does not mince words when he says

“in the present condition of global society, where injustices abound and growing numbers of people are deprived of basic human rights and considered expendable, committing oneself to the common good means to make choices in solidarity based on a preferential option for the poorest of our brothers and sisters” What is paramount in the final analysis, says Pope Francis, is a radical commitment to ensure positive change, which is the need of the hour. For this he says, every section of society must play a definite role in a collaborative and concerted manner. The Pope does not spare the priests of the Catholic Church and he calls upon them to engage with the faithful on environmental issues. Further, he challenges international and national Governments and mechanisms saying, “the same mindset which stands in the way of making radical decisions to reverse the trend of global warming also stands in the way of achieving the goal of eliminating poverty. A more responsible overall approach is

needed to deal with both problems: the reduction of pollution and the development of poorer countries and regions” ‘Laudato Si’ does make one uncomfortable! Therefore, there is always the danger that many would like to cosmeticize this powerful document: to tinker with bits and parts, to be selective and comfortable in its reading; to do non-threatening acts like growing trees, propagating alternative technologies, not using plastics, to indulge in acts of tokenism like environmental ‘education’, or project work. Whilst all these acts are surely good and could lead to something more sustainable, ‘Laudato Si’ is path-breaking, radical in nature, it shakes one out of one’s complacency by touching every single dimension of our human existence. The Pope invites all to an ecological conversion, to change directions so that we can truly care for our common home; not to pay heed to Pope Francis’ prophetic words; to rubbish this timely and important message or to relegate it

to mere tree-planting and other ‘feel-good’ acts would certainly be a great disservice not to the Pope, but to Planet Earth! On 22 April 2020, Earth Day Pope Francis praised the environmental movement, saying it was necessary for young people to “take to the streets to teach us what is obvious, that is, that there will be no future for us if we destroy the environment that sustains us”. Recounting a Spanish proverb that God always forgives, man sometimes forgives but nature never forgives, Francis said, “If we have deteriorated the Earth, the response will be very ugly. We see these natural tragedies, which are the Earth’s response to our maltreatment. I think that if I ask the Lord now what he thinks about this, I don’t think he would say it is a very good thing. It is we who have ruined the work of God.” Saying the Earth was not an endless deposit of resources to exploit, he said, “We have sinned against the Earth, against our neighbour and, in the end, against the Creator.”

Even a cursory survey of the State of India’s environment will make one realise how serious the situation is. Climatic changes have played havoc on the lives and livelihood of millions of people – particularly the poor and the marginalised. Heat waves have scorched parts of North India and unseasonal rains and floods have destroyed other parts. Destruction has been wanton. When death snaches away a person it is a deep pain and loss in different ways and the grief is often impossible to make good and fill the loss. On May 28, 2022 the news in our Konkani circles the world over was a shocker, a really irreparable loss and a void impossible to fill. Cyril G. Sequeira popularly known as CGS Taccode his pen name was a writer, litterateur and dramatist, organiser, editor and a multifaceted personality hard to describe, yet his

down to earth simplicity and openness, with a rare blend of humer was an asset anywhere. His contribution to and prowess in the Konkani culture of Mangalore, Kanara and further is legendary in more ways than can be counted. He was 71, and was battling cancer for a while, said a medical advisor and friend after his death, in fact his real status was unknown till the eleventh hour. Born in Taccode Mar 8, 1951, Cyril or better CGS did his early education in his birth place , then Moodbidri and Bengaluru. CGS started to write in Konkani when he was just 12 years old. He was writing regularly for the last five decades. At one point was the sub editor of 'Raknno' weekly, a prestigious publication of Mangalore diocese in Konkani. Later he also worked as the

editor of ‘Kannik’ and ‘Umallo’ Konkani periodicals. CGS, though has written all forms of literature, was admired more for his humorous writing. He had written many dramas, some of which are, 'Moinyachi Poili Tarik' and 'Mori Magdalen' 'Char Disancho Saunsar','Diana' 'Haschengi Rodchem?' 'Bhadyachi Bail' 'Gongo' 'Raan Dukor' 'Kutmacho Thers'. Some of his poems are 'Izmolachi Vattli' and 'Kulkulo'.... He was seen to participate in many ‘Kavi Sammelans’ and 'Kavitha' events in different areas. His editing work for Konkani publications can not be counted. CGS had also compared many social and musical programmes of leading Konkani composers and events. CGS was conferred several awards, to name some, Konkani Basha Mandal, Goa, Daiji Dubai, Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy, Sandesha, Konkani Kutam Bahrain, and Mangalore Cultural Association (MCA) Qatar. he had also received Konkani Sahitya Academy Honorary Award. He had worked in Doha/Qatar and Dubai UAE for

some years. He is survived by wife Sylvia and children Vijay and Vinita and their families and a host of admirers and friends, never to be forgotten. CGS's acquntaince for me was a chance one at a Konkani Natak Sabha (KNS) event at the legendary Don Bosco Hall (DBH) some years ago. I was then a member of the KNS Casia group and dramas at DBH were my forte from childhood and the times of Fr. Philip Neri OfM Cap. A mutual friend introduced me as 'Shet' a frequent writer in English in local media - he exclaimed that Ohh.. I see many of your articles and the history back up you give is rare. I too reciprocated that I have seen many of his plays and heard his talks and the mirth and we were on the same wavelength then on. Some time later I wrote about St.Anne's Friary and the capuchins of Bijey/Farangipete, Mangalore, one of our favourite holiday sites. He then called me and we met and he asked to do articles on KNS and DBH which I eventually did. Then we met a few times and he wanted

A facebook post that came to my attention from Adv Praveen Pinto reads : "His book 'Fugetyo' , a collection of humorous articles published by 'Rakkno' publication was the funniest Konkani book i have ever read in my entire childhood. I was a fan of his writing from my childhood. Anyone knowing the Konkani language and wants non-stop laughter must

definitely read several of his books. I can guarantee you that it would be the best konkani funny writing you would have ever read and enjoyed. His various articles on various subjects were very popular in the 'Rakkno' and other Konkani periodicals. He was a close associate and a friend of my father, the late Shirthady William Pinto. May his dear soul Rest in Peace." Such comments from several people from all walks of life spells out the great regard our CGS enjoys and will ever remain in fond memory. Post CGS Baab's death, this illustrious Konkani Premi CGS Taccode's many facets and deep principles and beliefs surfaced and one can find much on it in Konkani publications and the very touching 'Special Issue' of VEEZ that Editor Dr.Austin Prabhu from Chicago brought out on June 1, 2022 and will further, really a tribute to the treasures that CGS Baab has left in the Konkani Community and an indelible heritage. I was heartbroken to hear of this untimely death, having not met him in the last few

months; it was a surprise to learn that he too was treated by the same Urologist treating me for long. The circumstances of his advanced ill health due to Cancer and his choices and how he maintained his principles and beliefs right into death. CGS Baab left detailed instructions on his final journey for the family and friends. It spells out his deep humane and just thinking and high principles that were embedded in him and the true Christian spirit, not just a blind following of Churchianity but a deep faith in his Lord and God to whom he bowed totally it is clear. As per his close friend and counselor Dr. Edward Nazareth some of the salient points that reflect the loftiness and high thinking with simple life that figure are as follows. First ever India-American Bishop Consecrated in USA

Tuesday May 31, 2022 was a memorable day as the 13th bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Columbus was installed in the USA,

the first Indian-American. Ever since Pope Francis in April 2022, announced the appointment of Rev.Fr. Earl K Fernandes as the Bishop elect of Columbus Ohio USA, the Indian diaspora and people in India have been waiting with bated breath for the Consecration and installation of the new youthful Bishop. There has been a lot written about this first in the US. What is of interest to people connected to the Indian subcontinent is the fact that the new Bishop Fernandes hails from Konkani Mangalore roots on his paternal side and Goa from his maternal side. Further, his parents lived long in Mumbai / Bombay and both grandparents too having migrated from Goa and

Fernandes was ordained and installed Tuesday May 31, 2022 as the 13th bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Columbus. The almost three-hour ceremony was deeply solemn, joyful and happy, with approximately 1,500 people in attendance for the ceremonial event. Rev. Fernandes, 49, Born in Toledo to Indian immigrants, he is the first Indian-American Catholic bishop.

During the homily and remarks from the pope’s representative to the United States, Archbishop Christophe Pierre, Bishop Fernandes was appreciated and praised. The bishop-elect sat in a gold and maroon robe, a zucchetto

Archbishop Pierre noted Fernandes’ broad smile and said that he’ll need it for his new position, it’s “not at all a bad start.” Indeed, Fernandes was seen grinning, often widely, throughout the ceremony. Before reading the letter from the pope appointing Fernandes bishop, Pierre addressed the new Bishop, who was earlier an official at the Apostolic Nunciature, the offices of the pope's representative to the United States, in Washington, D.C. Hartmayer praised Bishop Fernandes' parents: his late father Sydney and his mother, Thelma, who was watching the live stream from Toledo as she was too frail to travel for the ceremony. "These two wonderful people have had the strongest influence on Father Earl's life, especially his spiritual life," Hartmayer said. "They were his mentors ... his first teachers in the way of faith." Hartmayer noted that Fernandes made history when he was ordained as a bishop, as he is the Catholic Church's first IndianAmerican bishop.

Among the invited attendees were Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and his wife Fran; Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, who was a classmate of Earl Fernandes' at St. Francis de Sales High School in Toledo; interfaith leaders; about 35 bishops and more than 200 priests. To appreciate its significance one needs to dig back to the beginning of colonialism to understand the magnitude of the achievement. For those unaware of Goan history, in 1510, Iberian admiral Afonso de Albuquerque acquired a toehold in Goa, laid the foundation of the Lusitania Empire and established a link through this small island and its port between Portugal and India; and between Europe and Asia. Later, in a naval blitzkrieg, he succeeded in securing more than 40 toeholds along the shores of the Indian Ocean -- from Africa and the Mideast to the fareastern Spice Islands. Goa was the capital of the Portuguese Eastern Empire between the 16th and19th centuries, an era when Lisbon ruled the waves. In addition to serving as the military and administrative headquarters of the eastern empire, Goa, ultimately 3,700 sq. km (1,430 sq. miles) also was the religious capital for the entire region. The archbishop of Goa, who oversaw this expansion,

was jointly appointed by the Pope, the king of Portugal, and the religious authorities in Lisbon. Over the centuries, the titular Archbishop “Patriarch of the East Indies” invariably Iberian, appointed bishops at the various dioceses in Africa and Asia. Now for the first time in world history, the imminent appointment of a native born Goan to the position of Cardinal Patriarch represents an upgrading of the “Patriarch of the East Indies” to be one of the five patriarchs of the Latin Church. Cardinal-designate Ferrao was born on January 20, 1953, in the village of Aldona and baptized Filipe Neri Antonio Sebastao di Rosario Ferrao. He was one of three siblings. In 1960, the final year of Goa’s colonization, Filipe was seven years old and I was 12. Filipe grew up in the village of his birth; at the age of 10, he joined the junior seminary in the neighboring village of Saligao, and in due course, was ordained a priest. He is fluent in eight languages – Indian (3) and international (5). In 1994, Pope John Paul II appointed Filip Neri to the position of auxiliary bishop of Goa

and Daman. A decade later, he was installed Archbishop and Patriarch “ad honorem” of the East Indies. With the appointment of Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao of Goa as India’s first Cardinal Patriarch – one of five worldwide -- India joins the exclusive club of countries with this religious dignitary of the Latin Church - Jerusalem, Italy (Venice) and Portugal (Lisbon). The Patriarchate of Constantinople was abolished in 1964. Setting the Native Scene Aldona is largest of Goa’s villages, and like all villages, the neighborhood is referred to as vado. Surely, the cardinal-designate does not remember encounters between him and me when we were growing up, and truth be told, I do not remember them either, though we both from the same vado of Santarxette, and hung around the same soccer field by the boy’s school. Yet every village Tom, Dick, and Harry, as we used to refer to fellow villagers, will fondly recall summer vacations spent without a radio, TV, or swimming pool for entertainment. Instead, the boys would gather at the village square

for friendly competitions between the vados. Our two favorite sports were soccer a.k.a. football, and gilli-dandoo, an indigenous game, which is a modified version of baseball. The bat (dandoo) was a tree branch one foot long and two inches in diameter. The ball (gilli) was a sixinch piece of wood (two inches in diameter) shaped like a spindle (think American football or British rugby ball). Striking one end of the gilli would cause it to jump in the air and twirl in the process. The ingenious native game required the player to pitch his own ball and strike it far into the horizon. The points were scored by the distance struck, measured by the number of (actual) steps it took to cover the distance. The vado’s teams were made up of boys aged five to 25. The real ‘MVPs’ (most valuable players) in soccer or gilli-dandoo were between 15 and 25 years old because they were the “big scorers.” Younger boys served as the cheerleaders and members of the “peanut gallery.”

It appears that yesterday’s “peanuts” have become the next generation of “big scorers.” Cardinal-designate Ferrao is certainly a prime example of those who rose to the pinnacle of their vocation. Like many folks from the villages across Goa, many Aldonkars, as the villagers are called, migrated to other places in India or abroad for college or to work. Some of them scored big, too. One became a high official in East Africa and highly quoted author of a book on Goans in East Africa. Other Aldonkars became doctors in Bombay. One became a top healthcare official in New York City; another studied in France and became a leading radiation oncologist in the city of Chicago, USA. Their contemporary, after graduating from Bombay studied in London was awarded the Rohan Williams medal by the Royal College of Radiology for standing first at the 1976 FRCR exam. He, too, became a leading radiation oncologist in New York State. The field of treating cancer with radiation is a comparatively rare subspecialty in medicine, and Aldona graduated two leaders in the field. We look

forward to communicating with other Goan radiation oncologists. By a strange coincidence, on May 31, 2022 the United States had its first South Asian Bishop installed in the city of Columbus, Ohio. Bishop Earl K Fernandes’ mother hails from Aldona and father from Mangalore. There must be something in the Aldona water! We congratulate you, Filipe Neri Ferrao, for your historic and prestigious appointment. May the Good Lord bless your endeavors. Aldonkars, Goans, and Indians throughout the world are proud of you! With the installation, India will have six cardinals of which five will have the honor and duty of voting to elect the next Pope (those older than 80 years are ineligible to vote).
