Lorna Cordeiro The Nightingale of Goa.
Lorna Cordeiro The Nightingale of Goa.
The legendary singer Lorna Cordeiro on why she took that long sabbatical, stage fright and singing with Mohammad Rafi. Just before our interview, Konkani singer Lorna Cordeiro announces, “I am very scared of answering questions by reporters. I’m not a very effective speaker, you see.” Reassured that she won’t be allowed to feel nervous, she smiles, displaying a tiny bit of confidence.
“I’m a completely different person on stage. I don’t even rehearse before a show. The band keeps practising and I don’t interfere. I just go up and sing,” she says, adding that this wasn’t always the case. “When I was young, I did have a bit of stage fright, but that disappeared,” she recalls. The singer, who goes by the stage name Lorna, has been described as

the Nightingale of Goa. She turned 75 last August, and is ready to do as many shows as possible. After receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award and performing at the World Konkani Music Awards in Goa last week, she is ready to take Mumbai
by storm, at the Music of Goa show organised by Goan Outreach Association this Saturday. VDO.AI On favourites and comebacks “I will play all my hits, including the crowd favourites ‘ Nachom-ia

For someone who totally gave up singing for 25 years, Lorna’s

comeback in 1995 was seen as remarkable. She stopped because her mentor, saxophonist, trumpeter and composer Chris Perry, didn't allow her to sing with anyone else. “Early in my career, Chris Perry really encouraged me and I am what I am
because of him. But in my contract,

I had agreed not to sing with anyone else. It was tough to quit singing, but once I decided, I stuck
to it,” she explains. Lorna says she has no regrets about that period. “What’s the point? Forget about live music, I didn’t even practise or hum my songs. It’s not easy but I did it,” she beams. Familial talent

Hailing from Saligao in Goa, Lorna was encouraged to sing by her father, Teofilo Cordeiro. She reminisces, “My father’s family was full of crooners. All my siblings got into singing. My sister Jean sang in restaurants.” Lorna began as a jazz
vocalist, and was promoted by Perry. After Goa, she performed a lot in Mumbai, in hotels and nightspots like the Taj, Ritz, Ambassador, Talk Of The Town, Venice and Blue Nile. In Delhi, she was a regular at

Everybody loved them, and a new journey began.” ‘ Bebdo ’, ‘ Tuzo Mog ’, ‘ Pavsachea Tempar ’, ‘ Nachom-ia Kumpassar ’, ‘ Red Rose ’, ‘Lisboa’, ‘ Sorga Rajeant ’ and ‘Calangute’ became hot favourites. “Initially, HMV only promoted singer Alfred Rose, but once I clicked, they came to me.” Milestones Lorna says one of her career highlights was to record Konkani songs, including the hit ‘Maria’, with ace playback singer Mohammed Rafi. She explains, “It was Chris’s idea. Rafi believed in knowing the meaning of each word in order to get the perfect expression. So he
Once she became used to staying away from the glory, Lorna never wanted to return. She says, “Pianist Ronnie Monsorate was very keen that I come back but I refused. He approached my mother who told him to keep persisting till I relented. That’s what I did eventually.” Her 1995 comeback concert at Goa’s Miramar Beach received a rousing response. “I initially thought I’d do only one show and stop. But seeing the response I decided to continue. Today I am happy singing. After the Mumbai show I head to Mangalore,” she says. Lorna has been the subject of two films. The heroine’s role in Anurag Kashyap’s Hindi movie Bombay Velvet was inspired by her. “I haven’t seen it. I was scared to see what Anushka Sharma would do,” she quips. Regarding the Konkani film Nachom-ia Kumpassar , directed by Bardroy Barretto and based on the lives of Perry and Lorna, she says, “The director says he has paid me

₹10 lakh but that is wrong. He didn’t even ask me before making it. My friends told me to go to court but who has the time? People are enjoying the film, so it’s fine. Who am I to stop them?” Though she visits Goa often, Lorna spends most of her time in Mumbai, at her home in Dhobi Talao or her sister’s house in Mazagon. She listens to music regularly but wishes young Konkani musicians come up with something new, instead of using tried and tested sounds. She adds, “I like singers Sonia Shirsat and Nephie Rod. They are good. As for jazz, you tell me, is there any jazz today?” When asked whether she spends her time reading, praying, watching television or cooking, Lorna laughs, “I don’t have any plus points. If I had, I’d have been a different person.” It’s a far cry from the start of our interview when she talked about being nervous.third generation kids who grew up listening to their parents play her songs — pack concert venues. In a country with a rich heritage of music, aspiring singers are a dime a dozen. Most of them eventually realise that they are not cut out to make it a profession, while some of them excel after honing their skills through years of practice. But a few special ones, among them, realise that they are born to sing and go on to become legends. Lorna Cordeiro was one such legend who went on to reach dizzying heights in her career. Early days Lorna Cordeiro hailed from a religious Goan Catholic family. She was the third born child in a family of six children. Lorna's budding singing talent was first recognized by friends and neighbours who heard her sing Konkani hymns after the daily family prayers. These appreciations helped her family to firmly believe in her talent and they encouraged her to fully explore it. Finding a Mentor cum guru Most great achievers have a mentor

who takes them under their tutelage — Lorna Cordeiro was no different. In her teens, she was taken under the wings of Chris Perry — a prominent musician, song writer and composer. Under his guidance, the extraordinary range of Lorna's talent began to flourish. She began a journey that would make her an icon of Goan music by singing in his band for the next nine years. Lorna has no qualms in admitting Chris Perry's contribution towards bringing her talent to the fore and she calls him — her guru. Bombay's Venice The glorious heydays of Jazz music in India were in the 60s and 70s. Old timers often reminisce about the most prominent exponents of this art — the magical duo of Lorna Cordeiro and Chris Perry. Venice, a night club in Hotel Astoria of Bombay, was the stage for Lorna to unleash her sizzling talent along with Chris Perry who led the band with his mesmerizing saxophonic skills. They were an instant hit. Apart from being a mesmerizing singer, she was an electrifying performer who had several
signature moves in her repertoire. She would begin her gig by stretching her arms out wide towards the crowd, tilt her head, in her inimitable style, and exclaim "I am Lorna". Patrons of Venice would go into raptures as she proceeded to belt out jazz and pop numbers by Ella Fitzgerald and Connie Francis. Lorna would customarily whip the audience into a frenzy as she gracefully swayed to the tune after nailing every high note. The performance of the band would reach a crescendo as she threw a glance at Chris Perry who would end the final moments of his piece by going down on his knees as he raised his sax to the sky. She was the pulse of the audience and her creative on-stage chemistry with Chris was the talk of the town. Together, they made people come in droves to watch them perform. Their popularity led them to perform in star hotels and nightclubs of Bombay, Delhi, Bangalore, Calcutta, Shimla, Ooty and other cities. Icon of Goa

The vocals of Lorna and the musical genius of Chris wasn't just confined to live performances. They wanted their talent to reach a wider audience, so the composition skills of Chris Perry came into full effect as he began creating Konkani albums with Lorna. Together they churned out a factory of chart-busters. Their songs were distinctly unique — heavy Jazzy elements peppered with a dash of Goan folksy influence. Lorna had this special ability to raise every high note just that bit higher. Pretty soon the radio began playing her songs every afternoon and she became a house hold name in Goan communities in India and abroad. Lorna's biggest hit songs were Bebdo, Red Rose, Pisso, Calangute, Adeus, Lisboa, and many others. Her ardent fans bestowed many monikers on her, the most notable ones being 'Bessie Smith' of India and the moniker that everyone identifies with her — Goa's Nightingale. This endearing fairy tale came to an abrupt halt in 1973, due to a variety of reasons, and Lorna Cordeiro stopped singing.
The Nightingale's return from a long sabbatical Fans, critics and the general public wondered and speculated about Lorna's disappearance from the public eye for decades, but no one seemed to exactly know why she stopped singing. In 1995, Lorna returned from her prolonged sabbatical by releasing an album titled 'Hello Lorna' — after her former band mate Ronnie Monserrate and her mother convinced her to make a comeback. A show commemorating her return was organised in Miramar beach, Goa. It was a sell-out. Goans, young and old thronged the place to catch a glimpse of the elusive legend. The roads leading up to the venue were jammed with traffic for kilometers. Many of her fans had believed rumours of her death, and were sceptical if it was the real Lorna Cordeiro. They didn't have to wonder for long. Lorna clambered up to the stage and let her magical voice take over the crowd as they went delirious with a delightful mix of joy, happiness, nostalgia, and tears. 300,000 people that evening realised that time may steal your

ICYM CELEBRATES PLATINUM JUBILEE
My 14 years in CYM years of my life. At the outset, I state that I am not going to present the history or its activities in detail in this article.
The Mangalore Diocesan Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) will celebrate Platinum Jubilee of its existence on 12th June 2022 at Vamanjoor Church Hall, Mangalore. On this occasion, this is a small attempt to narrate my association with this 75 years old organization for a period of 14 long and youthful 17 Veez Illustrated Weekly
CYM - Commencement significant developments:
and
Year 1947 was memorable in the history of India. On August 15th India was liberated from the British rule and gained its freedom. A few months before that great event, April 13th was a landmark day in the history of the Diocese of Mangalore. On that significant day the Bishop of Mangalore Bishop Victor R. Fernandes founded the Catholic Youth Movement (CYM) by an official decree and by forming a diocesan youth committee. Initially CYM units were officially started in Mangalore city parishes like Bejai, Milagres, Bendur, Derebail and elsewhere. Gradually units were started in the length and breadth of the entire Mangalore diocese comprising the then entire district of South Canara and Kasargod Taluk of Kerala state. There were separate units of boys and girls in some parishes especially in Mangalore city parishes. In the later years say during 1970s the units were combined and formed as a single CYM unit. Again, the year 1999 is significant in the history of CYM. Catholic Bishops’ Conference of
India (CBCI) had added ‘Indian’ prefix to CYM on 14th September and since then it has been recognized as Indian Catholic Youth Movement (acronym ICYM). One more memorable year in the history of CYM / ICYM of the Diocese of Mangalore is 2012. The erstwhile Mangalore Diocese was divided, and the new Diocese of Udupi was formed. Based on this, a separate ICYM central council was formed in the new diocese. Before this recent phenomenon the units under the area of the Udupi diocese were served by the CYM / ICYM central council of the undivided Diocese of Mangalore for 65 long years. In my present article as majority of the topics covered are related to the
18 Veez Illustrated Weekly
era before 1990, I am using the acronym CYM to represent the association. Also, as division of Mangalore and Udupi Dioceses happened only 10 years ago CYM / ICYM wherever used refers the undivided Diocese. Instilled leadership qualities: Since 1947 a few thousands of youngsters have walked through the portals of CYM / ICYM. It has molded young and energetic youth as the community leaders. Those who were the charter members of this organization may now be above the age of 90. For many years the entry age was 15 and the exit was 35. That time one could remain in the CYM for 20 long years. Then the upper age was reduced to 30. Present entry and exit age is 18 and 28 years respectively, the serving period being 10 years only. Past members of CYM / ICYM of the Diocese of Mangalore spread across the globe may be grateful to the organization for shaping them as good leaders. Office bearers of CYM / ICYM, still recall that they acquired leadership qualities through their service while leading activities at
their parishes, denary or diocesan level. Not only office bearers, but even ordinary members of the organization may also say that CYM / ICYM had instilled the leadership qualities in them because of the opportunities provided by the platform. CYM gave me a boost: In my case, until tenth standard I was little hesitant, and was not coming forward to participate in group activities. I hadn’t joined the altar server sodality at the primary school level or the N. C. C. unit during high school studies. Academically I was a brilliant student but far behind in other activities which required leadership qualities. In 1976, after the 10th standard results, the parish priest of Pangala Fr. Victor Saldanha had announced that all 10th standard completed students should join the CYM unit of the parish. Respecting his words and out of no choice I joined CYM unit in Pangala Parish. Afterwards, I got involved in almost every activity of the unit. Recited prayer during meetings, sang songs and hymns,

delivered speech, took part in elocution, singing, quiz, sports, wrote minutes and read, conducted meetings, participated in programs, and organized several events in the parish, participated in dramas, camps, organized stalls for parish feast etc. We also helped families within the parish during wedding celebrations and other occasions at their houses to prepare food and helped in serving food to the guests.Took part in youth rallies, picnics and tours near and far.
In that sense, during those years
there were several activities in CYM since there were not many organizations in the parish unlike today and we had several occasions to participate and work in groups. Now also I recall such activities and cherish the memories. Nowadays there are arrangers in each field, no dearth of funds and one can get everything from the providers. Olden days it was very difficult to
20 Veez Illustrated Weekly
conduct programs and events. Proper thought process, planning and hard work was needed. I narrate here a few things about our games and recreation stall during the Parish Annual feast. For constructing the stall structure, we had to bring areca trees, bamboo poles and woven coconut leaves from distant places either on head or shoulders. We had to dig holes manually to erect poles. The experience of active CYM members of those days was great and entirely different. Nowadays the country has progressed, technology is improved. Monetary wise also there are no such difficulties as in the past.
attention to studies I had failed in 2nd PUC Mathematics just by 2 marks. Because of this I joined the Diploma course (Chemical Engineering) at the Karnataka Polytechnic (better known as KPT) Mangalore in 1978 with the help of my 10th standard marks which were too good for a seat in any branch.
CYM - Part and parcel of my life for 14 years: CYM renewed my spirit and showed me the way to climb the leadership ladder. From the age of 16 to 30, I was involved in parish, denary (Varado) and diocesan leadership. My PUC (12th standard) result helped me to involve in CYM activities in a bigger way. My wish was to study Engineering at MIT, Manipal after my PU (12th standard). But as I had not given proper
That was a turning point of my life. The saying ‘Man proposes, and God disposes’ was true in my case. It helped me to take active part in

CYM activities in Mangalore at the Diocesan level. In 1979, I was elected as the editor of Yuvak, the bulletin of CYM Central Council. In 1980 got elected as the General Secretary and had the opportunity to become the President of the CYM central council from 1981 to 1984 for continuous 3 years though there were elections every year to choose the new President and the committee. The usual practice was to become the President for one year. But members had reposed their faith in me and re-elected in the elections held for 2 subsequent years.
As far as my knowledge goes to Austin D’Souza Prabhu (Bendur) had held the President’s post for 6 years and one year as Honorary President, Alban Castelino (Bendur) and Richard DSouza (Bendur) for 4 years each. Though the Mangalore city parishes had dominated the CYM Central council during those years and I was from a village parish (Pangala – 55 kilometers away from Mangalore city) I held the
President’s post for 3 years at a stretch. When I was active in CYM Central Council of the Diocese of Mangalore, I had the opportunity to visit France (Taize and Lourdes) and Italy (Turin and Rome) to participate in youth activities for about 2 months. Diamond Jubilee of ICYM in 2007: On the occasion of Diamond Jubilee of ICYM in 2007, I was one of the honorary Vice Presidents of the organizing Committee (honorary President was Ivan D’Souza, the past president of diocesan CYM, a renowned political leader and former member of the Karnataka Legislative Council MLC).
There was a two wheeler rally in the city on the first day of the diamond jubilee celebrations. During the second day program held at Rosario Cathedral

Minister and Governor of Rajasthan was the Chief Guest. I had brought out a book ‘Moje CYM Dees’ containing details of my activities in the CYM which ranged for 14 long years. This was released by Ronald Colaco, the prominent NRI entrepreneur who was the guest of honor. Victor Saldanha, Fr. Gabriel B. D’Souza and Fr. J.P. Tauro supported me a lot in all my activities. I cannot forget their goodwill towards me. I am sure that members of CYM / ICYM have such regards towards their Directors at different levels and in different points of time. During my tenure (1976 – 1990) as member / office bearer of CYM, the Diocesan Bishop was Bishop Basil S. D’Souza, who encouraged and

At the time of registration it was needed to change the title of the monthly as ‘AmchoYuvak’ had started publishing its bulletin ‘Bhavadthi Yuvak’ from the

I had edited the monthly magazine for 3 years till 1986. I was honored during ‘AmchoYuvak’ Decennial celebrations in 1993 for establishing the monthly by the chief guest of the program Judith Mascarenhas, Deputy Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation. The monthly was published in the print form for about 25 years providing opportunities for the talents of many youngsters. Through this media many CYM / ICYM members developed their writing skills and made a name in literature. Now it continues in e-version containing news – views etc.

There was a common Saying – "Oorige upakaari manege maari": It was a common fact that many members of CYM got scolding from their parents for their absence at household chores due to their CYM activities. There was a common saying at that time which went as "Oorige upakaari manege maari" (Always ready to help others but not doing anything at home). Several CYM members have undergone one or other bitter - sweet experiences either within CYM or outside. But by
following the motto ‘Leadership through Service’ many members had displayed true leadership. On this auspicious occasion of the Platinum Jubilee, I wish the very best to ICYM. May Platinum turn into Century and grow further in leaps and bounds. - H. R. Alva

Fr. Edwin L. D’Souza SJ: A Jesuit for All Seasons and Regions (06 November 1925 – 08 June 2022)
Fr. Edwin D’Souza the senior most Jesuit (96 years) of Goa Province left this world on 08th June 2022 morning at Xavier Residence, Alto Porvorim, Goa. He lived 76 years as a Jesuit and 63 years as a Jesuit Priest. Fr. Edwin was born in Kampala, Uganda on 06th November 1925 but was brought up in Moira, Goa.
The people of Moira are known for their intellectual capabilities as well as their eccentricities. Folklore of Goa is replete with plenty of amusing anecdotes about the Moidekars characterising their daily life and work. Irrespective of what others said, he always spoke fondly about his ancestral house and surrounding in Moira. His early schooling was done in Mater Dei High School, Saligão and the last two years of his schooling were at Moira. This was followed by four years in the Rachol Seminary. He joined the Society of Jesus on 27th September 1945 at Vinayalaya, Mumbai. His Philosophy studies (1949-52) were at Sacred Heart College, Shembaganur. After his Regency at Loyola, Margão (195254) and St. Paul’s, Belgavi (1954-55) he was sent to the Colegio Maximo, at Comillas, Spain for his Theology studies (1955-59). He had fond
40 Veez Illustrated Weekly
memories of his travel and his stay in Spain and was always more than willing to talk about his years in Spain, of course with a few phrases of Spanish here and there. He loved to talk in Spanish and he also showed his wiliness to teach it to others. In general, he was linguistically gifted and was able to converse comfortably in Konknni, Marathi, Portuguese, Spanish, Latin and of course English. Returning from Spain after his Theology and Ordination, as a young priest Fr. Edwin was sent to do Tertianship at Sitagarha (196061) and then he worked as a missionary in the Ahmednagar District of Maharashtra for 20 years from 1962-82. On 02nd February 1963 at Ahmednagar he took his Final Vows. In Ahmednagar District, he was immersed in a completely new region, culture, and language. Yet, he learnt Marathi and went about his work with zeal and determination, without complaining. He loved pastoral work and was self-sacrificing in his service in various mission stations of
Ahmednagar District. His concern for the poor was exemplary. Later, he served as the Parish Priest (198386) of St. Xavier’s Church, Pune. During this time, he was also the Rector of St. Vincent’s, Pune and therefore, after the sudden death of the Provincial, he was called upon to lead the Goa-Pune Province as Provincial (1986-92). As a Provincial he was spiritual, approachable, friendly, methodical, just and fair in his dealings. He was balanced in his judgements, calm and patient with individual and was an efficient facilitator. After his term as the Provincial, he served in the leadership role as the Superior at St. Britto’s, Mapusa, at St. Paul’s, Belgavi and at Pedro Arrupe Institute (PAI), Raia. He loved PAI, Raia and always showed interest in its activities and programmes. During his sabbatical he opted to attend short courses in Christology, new trends in Theology and Ignatian Spirituality. His desire to continue reading and be up to date with new ideas and tends in Theology always remained with him.
41 Veez Illustrated Weekly
During his retirement years at PAI, Raia, Fr. Edwin was delved deeper into the sources of Ignatian spirituality through extensive reading and regularly sharing his insights and reflections of Sunday Liturgy on the Bulletin of PAI. Whether as Rector of a variety of Jesuit Institutions, the District Superior of the Ahmednagar Mission, Parish Priest of St. Xavier's in Pune or the Provincial of the GoaPune province he has served with charm, dedication and commitment. As Provincial or Superior, he displayed a humility that is hard to beat. He always took the advice of his consultors before he made decisions and steadfastly held on to them, despite the fact that he knew there would be adverse reactions to them. And adverse reactions he did get, yet he displayed the same calmness and humility and held no grudge. He took the reactions humbly and quietly, never blaming someone else for the mistakes, but taking them on himself. No doubt the Provincialship was the heaviest cross he had to carry, and he carried
it with great endurance and patience. It reminds one the words of St. Paul to Timothy, “Share in suffering as a soldier of Christ Jesus (2 Tim 2:3).” Truly Fr. Edwin has been that good soldier of Christ. His native wisdom of Moira and his rustic charm of rural Ahmednagar district never failed him in his long journey as a Jesuit. Many admirable qualities and a simple, disciplined lifestyle enabled Fr Edwin to be an exemplary figure in the community in spite of his advanced age. He was a gentleman, kind, and considerate in all his dealings, a committed religious, faithful to all his spiritual obligations and a lovable community member. Among his many qualities, his obedience and his humility were outstanding. In the context of shifting rooms, he once mentioned “Father in this context and in any other matter you do not have to request me, it is sufficient to simply order me to do what is required”. This was not just an empty statement but he valued and practiced obedience perfectly. On
42 Veez Illustrated Weekly
many occasions Jesuits were deeply touched by his humility in spite of his seniority and advanced age. Whenever he realised that his way of going about had caused some irritation or unease, he would return after a while and humbly seek forgiveness. His colleagues have great admiration for him precisely because of his ability to come and seek pardon. His willingness to be of some help, even in his old age, was exemplary. In the community he was concerned about everyone and always had a word of appreciation and gratitude for all. His ability to relate and mix with the old and the young made him an affable member of the
community. He loved all and hated none. His regular and supportive presence at all community activities will be greatly missed. Jesuits and others who knew him will miss his serene smile and warm personality.

CGS had a close and emotional bond with Qatar where in first came in the early 80s in search of greener pastures and then again spent over a decade before retiring and leaving Qatar for good in 2009. Seminar on "Mental Health Matters"
The Department of Political Science and the Center for Extension Services at St. Aloysius College (Autonomous) Mangaluru organised the seminar titled, "Mental Health Matters". Dr. Srinivas Bhat U, Department of Psychiatry, KS Hegde Medical Academy, Derlakatte, Mangaluru
laid down the context to the students that makes the knowledge of mental health and its enjoyment a necessity for the students and the youngsters in general. The ecosystem at present offers us with comforts and choices. There are times when learning from life becomes so less that he explained

through an illustrated through a case that involved hasty decisions and high emotions. He pointed out that most persons manage with life wherein 8 to 10 out of 100 have problems of management. He explained the challenges and issues faced by adolescents and the youngsters above the age of 19 by simplifying the German American developmental psychologist and psychoanalyst Erik Homburger Erikson’s theory on identity. Dr. Bhat said that mental illnesses are largely to do with genes or acquired through heredity. These get triggered when such people undergo massive stress like loss of a loved one, love failure, job failure etc and further aggravates when substance abuse is involved. The second major theme that Dr Bhat addressed in terms of mental health involved relationship,
friendship, love, affairs, and marriage by giving three illustrations to the effect. Through these interesting examples, he emphasised that a person needs to focus on being self-independent and in a position to perform actions with responsibility before committing to a relationship; friendship and love related affairs including marriage will have to wait! Here he laid stress on the involvement of substance abuse and how it alters one’s perception on relationships and job and thus impairs once decision-making. Hence, the need to approach counsellors who enable you to put “your inside out” with confidentiality. He assured that counsellors merely allow you to pour out in such a manner that you find your own solutions. In short, talking out helps you to think! Thoughts of depression and suicide can invade any mind, but how its addressed makes a difference. There is a need to improve one’s lifestyle that relates to patterns of sleeping and eating. There is a greater need to be in harmony with inner self.
