Mangaluru, Jun 30: Heavy rains have been lashing in the district of Dakshina Kannada for the past two days including the city of Mangaluru. Some private educational institutions have declared holiday on Thursday, June 30. The route from Adyar to Kannur in city was blocked due to waterlogging and people were seen pushing their two-wheeler through
the submerged roads. Water also gushed into premises of a private hospital in Kannur. The road from Mangaluru to Moodbidri is completely submerged in water causing a traffic jam. The commuters were having a time moving past the national

An overview of your Gallbladder... Some groups have been having various discussions on Gallbladder and its ills, in order to provide an overview of the matter. Basic information purely from a nonmedical standpoint is here. At all times even for the simplest ailment a properly qualified medical practitioner in a hospital must be consulted before any treatment is considered. The gallbladder, also known as the cholecyst, is a small hollow organ where bile is stored and concentrated before it is released into the small intestine. In humans, the pear-shaped gallbladder lies beneath the liver. It receives and stores bile, produced by the liver, via the common hepatic duct, and releases it via the common bile duct into the duodenum, where the bile helps in the digestion of fats. The gallbladder can be affected by gallstones, formed by material that cannot be dissolved – usually cholesterol or bilirubin, a
product of hemoglobin breakdown. These may cause significant pain, particularly in the upper-right corner of the abdomen and are often treated with removal of the gallbladder (called a cholecystectomy). Cholecystitis, inflammation of the gallbladder, has a wide range of causes, including result from the impaction of gallstones, infection, and autoimmune disease. Gallbladder

The gallbladder sits beneath the liver. Going back to History : Historically, the gallbladder and biliary tree are found in Babylonian models from 2000 BCE, and in ancient Etruscan model from 200 BCE, with models associated with divine worship. Diseases of the gallbladder are known to have existed in humans since antiquity, with gallstones found in mummies. Historians believe the death of Alexander the Great may have been associated with an acute episode of cholecystitis. Early descriptions of gallstones appear to have been in the Renaissance, perhaps because of the low incidence of gallstones in earlier times owing to a diet with more cereals and vegetables and less meat. The first surgical removal of a
gallstone (cholecystolithotomy) was in 1676 by physician Joenisius, who removed the stones from a spontaneously occurring biliary fistula. Stough Hobbs in 1867 performed the first recorded cholecystostomy, German surgeon Carl Langenbuch performed the first cholecystectomy in 1882 for a sufferer of cholelithiasis, of gallstones. Langenbuch reasoned that given several other species of mammal have no gallbladder, humans could survive without one. The debate whether surgical removal of the gallbladder or simply gallstones was preferred was settled in the 1920s, with the consensus that removal of the gallbladder was preferred. The first laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed by Erich Mühe of Germany in 1985, although French surgeons Phillipe Mouret and Francois Dubois are often credited for their operations in 1987 and 1988 respectively. To have "gall" is associated with bold behavior, whereas to have "bile" is associated with bitterness. In the Chinese language, the gallbladder is associated with courage and a myriad of related
12 Veez Illustrated Weekly
idioms, including using terms such as "a body completely [of] gall" to describe a brave person, and "single gallbladder hero" to describe a lone hero. In the Zangfu theory of Chinese medicine, the gallbladder not only has a digestive role, but is seen as the seat of decision-making. How it basically works : The main function of the gallbladder is to store bile, also called gall, needed for the digestion of fats in food. Produced by the liver, bile flows through small vessels into the larger hepatic ducts and ultimately through the cystic duct , parts of the biliary into the gallbladder, where it is stored. At any one time, 30 to 60 millilitres of bile is stored within the gallbladder. When food containing fat enters the digestive tract, it stimulates the secretion of cholecystokinin. In response to cholecystokinin, the gallbladder rhythmically contracts and releases its contents into the common bile duct, eventually draining into the duodenum. The bile emulsifies fats in partly digested food, thereby assisting their absorption. Bile consists primarily of water and bile salts, and also acts as a means of
eliminating bilirubin, a product of hemoglobin metabolism, from the body. The bile that is secreted by the liver and stored in the gallbladder is not the same as the bile that is secreted by the gallbladder. During gallbladder storage of bile, it is concentrated 310-fold [16] by removal of some water and electrolytes. This is through the active transport of sodium and chloride ions] across the epithelium of the gallbladder, which creates an osmotic pressure that also causes water and other electrolytes to be reabsorbed. Gallstones : Gallstones form when the bile is saturated, usually with either cholesterol or bilirubin. Most gallstones do not cause symptoms, with stones either remaining in the gallbladder or passed along the biliary system. When symptoms occur, severe "colicky" pain in the upper right part of the abdomen is often felt. If the stone blocks the gallbladder, inflammation known as cholecystitis may result. If the stone lodges in the biliary system, jaundice may occur; if the stone blocks the pancreatic duct, pancreatitis may occur. Gallstones
13 Veez Illustrated Weekly
are diagnosed using ultrasound. When a symptomatic gallstone occurs, it is often managed by waiting for it to be passed naturally. Given the likelihood of recurrent gallstones, surgery to remove the gallbladder is often considered. Some medication may be given, lithography, a procedure used to break down the stones, may also be used.
Gallbladder removal : A cholecystectomy is a procedure in which the gallbladder is removed. It may be removed because of recurrent gallstones and is considered an elective procedure. A cholecystectomy may be an open procedure, or a laparoscopic one. In the surgery, the gallbladder is removed from the neck to the fundus, and so bile will drain directly from the liver into the biliary tree.
About 30 percent of patients may experience some degree of indigestion following the procedure, although severe complications are much rarer. About 10 percent of surgeries lead to a chronic condition of post cholecystectomy syndrome. Possible Complication : Biliary injury (bile duct injury) is the traumatic damage of the bile ducts. It is most commonly an iatrogenic complication of cholecystectomy — surgical removal of gallbladder but can also be caused by other operations or by major trauma. The risk of biliary injury is more during laparoscopic cholecystectomy than during open cholecystectomy. Biliary injury may lead to several complications and may even cause death if not diagnosed in time and managed properly. Ideally biliary injury should be managed at a center with facilities and expertise in endoscopy, radiology, and surgery. Biloma is a collection of bile within the abdominal cavity. It happens when there is a bile leak, for example after surgery for removing the gallbladder (laparoscopic cholecystectomy), with an incidence

of 0.3–2%. Other causes are biliary together here for VEEZ readers. surgery, liver biopsy, abdominal trauma, and, rarely, spontaneous perforation. In Defence of the Unborn
U.S. Supreme Court overturns 1973 Roe vs. Wade Ruling Why I hail this decision and Church’s Moral Stance on Abortion. On 24 June 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a 50 years old verdict in Roe vs. Wade case that had legalized abortions. The Church and Pro-life groups have welcomed the decision. U.S. Bishops’ Conference praised the decision. Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, President of the Pontifical Academy
for Life, praised the ruling and exhorted all to defend life from the moment of conception. Jeanne Mancini of March for Life expressed “Joy and gratitude” for this decision of the Supreme Court. I add my own humble voice to the chorus of those who hail this landmark decision which should invite all to re-think their stand on abortion and respect life as a gift from God and protect it from the moment of conception. However, the U.S. Press reacted strongly even as anti-abortion and pro-life activists welcomed and celebrated the ruling of the Supreme Court. Washington Post said: “It is hard to exaggerate how wrongheaded, radical and dangerous this ruling is….” New York Times stated: “For the first time in history, the Supreme Court
15 Veez Illustrated Weekly
has eliminated an established constitutional right involving the most fundamental of human concerns: the dignity and autonomy to decide what happens to your body”. Chicago Tribune: “We lament Friday’s decision on the grounds that it diminishes freedom and choice, and we do so as a consequence of our longstanding belief that government should not interfere with our individual bodies.” Los Angelus Times, The Boston Globe, Miami Herald etc also had similar strong reactions. Many celebrities and politicians including President Joe Biden himself have reacted strongly, Biden calling it a “terrible” ruling, “Jill and I know how painful the devastating decision is for so many Americans” he said.
P.M. Justin Trudeau of Canada wrote on Twitter: “The news coming
out of the U.S. is horrific. My heart goes out to the millions of American women who are now set to lose their legal right to an abortion”. All the above and thousands of more similar reactions only focus on the woman’s right over her body. None of the pro-abortionist, nor the millions of women who go for abortions and the doctors who perform them think of the right of the innocent, defenceless, voiceless child in the womb. That unborn babe also has a right to live. Who will defend it if not the courts? It is sad that the Supreme Court took 50 long years to overturn that decision and allowed hundreds of millions of abortions in the past 50 years. In India, on the other hand, instead of banning or restricting abortion, our Parliament extended legalization of abortion upto 24 weeks last year. We must note here that abortion is not merely a legal issue; more important it is a moral issue. It concerns the fundamental right of an innocent unborn human person. Right to life is the first and the most fundamental of all rights. All other rights depend on that one. In fact, the State, Judiciary, the Church and women themselves should come
16 Veez Illustrated Weekly
forward to defend the life of the innocent child in the womb. I would like to reiterate here briefly the Church’s teaching on abortion and why it is intrinsically evil and therefore sinful if done deliberately. While explaining the meaning of the fifth Commandment of the Decalogue, “You shall not kill” (Ex.20:13; Dt.5:17), the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) underscores the sanctity of human life. “Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative act of God and it remains forever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the Lord of Life from the beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstances claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being.” (CCC 2258) The Church has always, from the first century itself, affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. In the Didache´ it is clearly said: “You shall not kill by abortion the fruit of the womb and you shall not murder the infant already born.” This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion
willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to moral law (cf. CCC 2271) The Vatican II Constitution Gaudium et Spes teaches with very clear and unequivocal terms that human life must be respected and protected: “Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes.” (G.S.51) The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in its Declaration on Procured Abortion (1974) states that the human person has certain rights which are known as “human rights” and the first right of the human person is right to life. This is fundamental, the condition of all the others. Hence it must be protected above all others. (No.11) It further teaches: “From the time that the ovum is fertilized, a life is begun which is neither that of the father nor of the mother; it is rather the life of a new human being with his own growth. It will never be made human if it were not human already” (No.12). Furthermore, “The child itself, when grown up, will never have the right to choose suicide; no more may his parents
17 Veez Illustrated Weekly
choose death for the child while it is not of an age to decide for itself. Life is too fundamental a value to be weighed against even very serious disadvantages”. (No.14)
St. Pope John Paul the Great, in his Encyclical Letter, Evangelium Vitae (1995) on the Value and Inviolability of Human Life, defines procured abortion as “the deliberate and direct killing, by whatever means it is carried out, of a human being in the initial phase of his or her existence, extending from conception to birth” (E.V.58). The Popes and the Church are well aware that sometimes the tragic and painful decision to abort the fruit of her own womb is made not for purely selfish reasons but out of a desire to protect certain important values such as her own health or a decent standard of living for the other members of the family.
Sometimes it is feared that the child to be born would live in such conditions that it would be better if the birth did not take place (e.g., extreme poverty, genetic disorders, victim of rape etc.) But St. Pope John Paul affirms: “Nevertheless, these reasons and others like them, however serious and tragic, can never justify the deliberate killing of an innocent human being” (Ibid.) Many people use ambiguous terminology or euphemisms to refer to abortion, such as “interruption of pregnancy”, “Medical Termination of Pregnancy”, पेट सफाई करना, बचचा गिराना, etc. which in fact, hide the seriousness of abortion as a grave moral evil. But that does not change the reality of things. We have to call a spade a spade. Abortion is the deliberate and direct killing of an innocent human being in the womb. It is tantamount to murder; it is terrorism in the womb; it is a veritable war on life. The fact that millions of abortions take place every year (a conservative estimate is 150 million annually) does not justify it. “Moral principles do not depend on a majority vote. Wrong is wrong, even if everybody
18 Veez Illustrated Weekly
is wrong. Right is right, even if nobody is right.” Fulton J. Sheen. St. John Paul II, the great defender of life, describes the pitiable plight of the innocent, weak and defenceless child in the womb: “The one eliminated is a human being at the very beginning of life. No one more absolutely innocent could be imagined. In no way could this human being ever be considered an aggressor, much less an unjust aggressor! He or she is weak, defenceless, even to the point of lacking that minimal form of defence consisting in the poignant power of a new-born baby’s cries and tears. The unborn child is totally entrusted to the protection and care of the woman carrying him or her in the womb. And yet sometimes it is precisely the mother herself who makes the decision and asks for the child to be eliminated, and who then goes about having it done.” (Ibid.) Often others, like boyfriend, parents, doctors etc. advise the woman to go for abortion. In India, of course, the husband or more often the mother-in-law would pressurize the wife/daughter-in-law to abort, if it is a female foetus. The
obsession for male child and antifemale mentality due to the prevalent dowry system are closely linked to this mind-set and behaviour. Pope St. John Paul II strongly condemned abortion as a grave moral disorder: “Therefore, by the authority which Christ conferred upon Peter and his Successors, in communion with Bishops…… I declare that direct abortion, that is abortion willed as an end or as a means, always constitutes a grave moral disorder, since it is the deliberate killing of an innocent human being. This doctrine is based on the natural law and upon the written Word of God, is transmitted by the Church’s Tradition and taught by the ordinary and universal Magisterium” (E.V.62) The Code of Canon Law punishes abortion with excommunication: “A person who actually procures an abortion incurs automatic (latae sententiae) excommunication” (C. 1398). The excommunication affects all those who commit this crime with knowledge of the penalty attached, and thus includes those accomplices without whose help the crime would not have been
19 Veez Illustrated Weekly
committed. (cf. C. 1329, E.V.62) We should also note here that many of the contraceptive pills are not just contraceptive but abortifacient. They do not merely prevent conception but prevent implantation of the fertilized egg on the wall of the uterus, hence causing abortion of the zygote. It is reported that in the U.S. because of the present Ruling and the consequent ban on abortions in many States, the demand for Abortion Pills have increased considerably. Furthermore, any experimentation which involves killing or destruction of embryos is equal to abortion. “The use of human embryos or foetuses as an object of experimentation constitutes a crime against their dignity as human beings who have a right to the same respect owed to a child once born, just as to every person” (E.V.63). In the case of in vitro fertilization many embryos are produced either to be used as “biological material” or as providers of organs or tissue for transplants in the treatment of certain diseases. Some are used, others are frozen and kept for later use or eventually destroyed. “The killing of innocent human creatures,
even if carried out to help others, constitutes an absolutely unacceptable act.” (Ibid) Human life is sacred. It is a precious gift from God, the Author of life. It begins with conception and, therefore, must be respected and protected from the moment of conception to natural death. It is hoped this brief presentation will help the readers understand the sacredness and inviolability of human life and the gravity of the unspeakable crime of abortion. Let us unite to respect and defend the life of the innocent, defenceless and voiceless child in the womb.

Fr. Stan Swamy: his legacy lives forever!
-*Fr. Cedric Prakash SJ A year ago, on 5 July 2021, when Father Stan Swamy left us, the world mourned the death of a great human being who epitomised compassion, courage, collaboration, and commitment! ‘Stan’, as he was lovingly called by those close to him, died whilst he was still incarcerated. From the time he was illegally arrested on 8 October 2020, he languished in the Taloja jail; his deteriorating health conditions prompted the Special Court to direct the jail authorities to admit him to a private hospital in Bombay where he finally succumbed, despite
the best possible medical treatment given to him at that time! It was indeed too little too late. For one, Stan should never have been arrested; secondly, the frail 84-yearold Jesuit priest was already suffering from severe health ailments. His death was universally regarded as an ‘institutional murder’. It was nothing short of that! Till today, Stan has not yet been exonerated of the trumped-up charges in the Bhima- Koregaon conspiracy case; fifteen others remain in jail (though a couple are on bail) in the same case.
There is no doubt that Stan has left behind a rich legacy worthy of emulation! He had a legion of friends- mainly the Adivasis and the
27 Veez Illustrated Weekly
sub-altern groups. He identified with them; walked the talk and accompanied them in their struggle for jal, jungle aur jameen. He left no stone unturned, in the defense of their legitimate Constitutional rights. His collaborators were women and men from all walks of life who were convinced that Stan lived his life totally for a more humane and just society. In the realisation of his vision, Stan made many enemies – the rich and powerful, the mafia who were plundering the area for natural resources, the corrupt politicians and their corporate honchos, and other vested interests. Prophets, like Stan are inconvenient; it was so obvious that Stan was a sheer nuisance to these vested interests. He thwarted some of their plans of destroying the lives of Adivasis, their livelihood and their environment. They wanted him out of the way, and they succeeded! Stan was an inspiration to many all through his life and one year after his death, he continues to be so. His was a life of selfless service for the poor and the marginalised, the excluded and the exploited and the
other sub-alterns of a dehumanized society. During his incarceration and on his death last year, there were hundreds of thousands who came out on the streets, both in India and abroad- first, condemning his illegal arrest and then his murder. His death was news all over the globe: in the print and electronic media; social media went viral extolling his significant contribution to the subaltern groups. Like a true Jesuit and a worthy son of St Ignatius, Stan did all he could to “set the world on fire” through the many values he epitomized, among them Compassion, Courage, Collaboration and Commitment. Compassion: Stan’s heart bled for the excluded and exploited; his life was focused on the reality and the cries of the poor. He did all he could to alleviate their suffering by identifying with them, being immersed in their joys, griefs, and anxieties; walking with them and addressing the systemic unjust issues which caused their impoverishment Courage: Stan lived the dictum of Jesus: “fear no one”, as he spoke truth to power and took on vested
28 Veez Illustrated Weekly
interests who denied the Adivasis of their legitimate rights for their identity and culture, land and other natural resources. He fought tenaciously for the youth who were imprisoned without justification. He was not afraid to risk his own life for justice for others. Collaboration: Stan always believed in collaboration with all women and men of goodwill. He realised that people from every segment of society have to come together in order that Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity are internalised and belong to “we the people of India”. He forged and belonged to networks and alliances which moved towards that goal. Commitment: Above all, Stan was unflinching in his commitment to God and in the service of his people. At great risk, he gave without counting the cost. He lived the Gospel without compromise and like his Master Jesus he was onesided in a total commitment to the service of faith and the promotion of justice, for the poor and the excluded Stan has left the country with an unparalleled legacy. Even in his
death, Stan challenges one and all to do much more, in the face of the deteriorating situation The situation in the country is bad in every sphere: political, economic and social. Global surveys on significant indicators puts India either rockbottom or among the worst. Divisiveness, discrimination, demonization and denigration of minorities hold sway; hate and violence is mainstreamed. Constitutional bodies which are meant to be impartial and objective are pathetically compromised and even destroyed to become pawns of the political masters, The less said about paid ‘godified’ media the better! Human rights defenders and those who take a visible and vocal stand for truth and justice are intimidated and harassed, subject to heavy police interrogations and even incarcerated (as we see in the case of the BK-19, those detained under the UAPA and other draconian laws). Mohammed Zubair and Teesta Setalvad who brought to the nation the plain truth, are in custody today on baseless fabricated charges; so
29 Veez Illustrated Weekly
also, are former IPS officers R. B. Sreekumar and Sanjiv Bhatt. On the other hand, those who revel in hate speech, venom and unconstitutional language, like Nupur Sharma, get away with impunity and are provided with State immunity. The regime is absolutely corrupt: they blackmail and buy up opposition legislators to destroy Governments which were elected with a people’s mandate. Just a few days ago this was also witnessed as the Government of Maharashtra was so brutally toppled! Democracy is being bulldozed; the pluralistic fabric of a nation based on a visionary and pathbreaking Constitution, is slowly being dismantled! A few days before his arrest in October 2020, in a video-message which went viral, Stan said, “What is
happening to me is not something unique happening to me alone. It is a broader process that is taking place all over the country. We are all aware how prominent intellectuals,
lawyers’ writers, poets, activists, students, leaders, they are all put into jail because they have expressed their dissent or raised questions about the ruling powers of India. We are part of the process. In a way I am happy to be part of this process. I am not a silent spectator, but part of the game, and ready to pay the price whatever be it.” Stan was not a silent spectator and has certainly paid the price; in doing so, he has left us with a rich legacy of compassion, courage, collaboration and commitment. Stan is no longer in our midst at a time, when the nation desperately needs the likes of him. One thing however, is certain Stan will never die and whatever the consequences, his legacy lives forever! 2 July 2022 *(Fr Cedric Prakash (GUJ) is a human rights, reconciliation and peace activist/writer. normal condition and became transgender at their teenage which is unconditional. This is hard to accept by their family members due to the disrespect they receive from their peers. Rev. Dr Praveen Martis in his address shared his experience at St Joseph’s College, Bengaluru on an experiment he and some of the students conducted during his tenure at St Joseph’s College, Bengaluru which included making the faculty dress up as transgenders and arrive to the college and this turned out to be disastrous due to the assumptions and comments we make in our daily life. He highlighted the importance of not

Andrea Lopes, III BA compered the programme. Savitha D’Souza welcomed the gathering. Dezma Fernandes rendered the vote of thanks. There were 3 sessions during the programme. The first session was conducted by Ms. Arundathi G. Heggade. She spoke on the topic “Transphobia and Rights of the Transgender Individuals”. She started off the discussion with a little introduction about herself and the backstory. She was born as a male and eventually began showing female attributes as she was growing up. She later became a transwoman. She gave us an insight into the various incidents she had to experience or face as a transwoman. She was raped by a passenger for begging at the traffic signal. The public representatives sent the transwoman to jail. Later, as a result of her continuous efforts as a part of the community, she was
respected by her own family. She tried to commit suicide twice in her life. She spoke about the difference between sex and gender and also gave us further details about the ‘Hijra’ culture. She further stated that there are also fake Mangalamuki’s which eventually takes away the respect that the community deserves. Ms.Hemangi Mhaprolkar was the resource person for the second session. She spoke on the topic “Role of Social Work in the Life of Sexual Minorities. She began her session with a quick activity which included all of us having to speak for about 3 minutes as our opposite genders. She then questioned about how we expect people to live like this daily when we can barely do it for 3 whole minutes. She gave a brief introduction about some of the basic topics such as Gender, Sex and Sexuality. She then “spoke about various terms such as Gender expression and Gender behaviour which was an eye-opening session to many of us who didn’t know the complete meaning of the same. She went on to talk about homosexuality and how homosexuals often face mental

issues because of the derogatory treatment they receive and how they also constitute a major part of the minorities. Her next subtopic for the day was about the LGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY. This was followed by a brief introduction of the all the communities that come under this umbrella which included the Lesbians, Gays, Transgenders, Queer, Intersex and Asexual people. She then displayed a slide of what showed the MSM circle and spoke about how this circle encompassed of the entire community of sexual minorities. On the right side, we had the hijra construct and on the left was all the others who identified as sexual minorities. She brought her focus to the transgender community and spoke about how the hijra construct was a phenomenon only seen in India and neighboring countries, the Gharana system, about how the transgender community must fight for acceptance today only because the visibility is miniscule, how the transitions can happen both ways (male to female and female to male) and both need to be given equal recognition and respect. Lastly, she
spoke about the role of social work in the life of the sexual minorities, the Humsafar Trust, changing the discriminatory behavior against transgenders and using basic tools such as speaking, allying with the community, authority, and advocacy as a social worker to work for the cause. The third session was conducted by RJ KAJAL. She spoke on the topic “Life Perspective of a Transgender Individual”. She was born a boy, began thinking about whether she was different after the age of 6 when she figured that she likes to dance, wear sarees, and dress up like women. She was humiliated by many of her brother’s friends who called her chakka, hijra and many such derogatory terms. She saw a transgender woman in her village for the first time and there was a general assumption among people that transgenders used to take children and make them change genders. She highlighted how the social constructs like religion and caste don’t matter in the transgender community, how she became a woman and was eventually accepted by her own family but not the society.
