Reviewing 1947 and life Family memories - Ivan Saldanha-Shet. Reliving old times and Family memories, it occurred to me, was a fruitful and welcome exercise in the wake of admired Dr. Mohan Prabhu's and Naveen Frank's recent articles in VEEZ Weekly. So here are some old memories at the back of my mind which often fascinate me. Many families who have lived through early times of Independence will have similar memories and life which have impacted and inspired them, many of them perhaps are now living and between the ages of 70 -80 years or thereabouts. It seems that hardly 10 percent of the population alive is above 65 years. This is dedicated to that 10 percent on this special occasion ! Now, with the 75th Indian Indepence Day on us it really enthuses people like me, for our
family, the times were in the first few years after Independence and the first 10 years of my parents' married life. My parents - Dad were married on May 8, 1944, at St.Sebastian's Church Bendur, Mangalore . I was born before independence in 1947 in Mangalore (my late elder brother in 1945) at what was then known as Dr.Lucy Saldanha's (nee' Lobo) Nursing Home (It was later named 'Glenview NursingHome) on the slope leading up to Lighthouse Hill just past 'Jyothi Theater' of recent memory, now gone. Fifty days after I was born, my mother and my elder brother with me, returned to Madras (now Chennai), where my father worked at the Railway HQ . Just a few months later August 15, 1947, the Independence Day was a grand celebration in Madras and my parents told us how they, with us two kids, could tour the city in a tram and enjoyed the special food

outlets around, they always were enthusiastic in recalling the first Independence Day celebrations. In late 1948, they were transferred to a small Andhra town Railway head at Bhimavaram some distance from Bezwada (now Vijayawada). Two of my siblings were born there, my sister eventfully in 1949 and brother at home in 1954 and one sister was buried there in October 1952 (though she was born in Fr.Muller's Kankanady), the family again in late 1954 relocated to Madras. Back in Madras, two more siblings were added to the family, a sister in 1956 and a brother 1958. Thus, life in
Just before the Corona Lockdown my younger brother born in (1954) Bhimavaram and myself made a long thought of a trip by train from Bangalore to that memorable place. The first day we spent there was to locate our then home, church and cemetery and so on which was a thrilling experience to say the least. The second day we went to the Railway station and such connected places and our successes in this Telugu town was superb. I for one could recall a lot of places and persons of the old times when I was just into school, with my grasp of Telugu still good. We also made acquaintance with a Konkani Catholic family from Chikmagalur, now they aren't there anymore. On the second day we spent a bit of time at the Bhimavaram Junction Railway Station (Now the city

railway station is on the trunk route). At the Refreshment Stall we decided to have some tea and the owner who was there who was curious to see two aliens here was talkative, he was almost my age. I told him my
brother (was born here) and I were here after more than 60 years and how our family lived nearby and there used to be a small canal along the Station Road. He was surprised, he said his family too lived in the same area and he was born here 65 yrs ago in 1950, his father was a tea vendor in this Railway platform. He still lived in the area, not far from the church. He confirmed that the canal (Calava) was filled up some time in the 1970s, the old buildings nearby, two row houses demolished about the same time. He said that ‘Narasayya’s’ descendants still lived in the place, and it is now named 'Narasayya agraharam'. Two things we asked him surprised and convinced him about our old connection, about a grocery shop (Kovanti Kottu) – he told us a lot about the shop owner and his family and said the family were in the vicinity and small hotel ‘Panthulu’s’

where we in those times, got idlis with chili powder/sugar and ghee, vadas (gari), upma and Pessarattu, he confirmed it, it was all simply amazing. Then I told him how my elder brother and I and some other neighbours used to go to a School near this station. His eyes opened wide, and he became alive, he said his name was MURALI KRISHNA, and he too attended the same school which is now no more (we also spoke of Kesava Rao High School, in town, now near the Main bus stand, which we then envied). The old Railway colony school, he
said, was run by a philanthropist and was not of the Railway as many thoughts. He explained about some who were there, but we could not relate. He explained the old topography of the area and the present and could trace the route we took to the school, across paddy fields. Indeed, this chance meeting with Murali Krishna, was no chance and as have always maintained “all is a design, nothing is mere chance”. He also knew about my father's close family friend Dr.Chapapathi Raju and his children and that they now have a nursing home as we had come to know, for they visited us in Madras in the 1960s. He mentioned that Dr.Chalapathi’s brother was a railway driver, which we had no idea at all. So, meeting this school mate was no accident, unfortunately we did not have more time to follow his leads, we said we should come back again. Graveyard: We explored the approach to the railway station and found that the area had changed a lot over the last 60 plus years. We walked through the railway colony and crossed over the rail line at the railway gate, heading for the
32 Veez Illustrated Weekly
Christian Cemetery at Gunipudi. It took us a bit of walking in the noon sun to get to the spot. Catholics had acquired a new plot for their use there which was yet to be put into shape. We never expected to find any signs of my sister's grave, we were there just as a mark of remembrance and family sentimentality. We then cut across the now famous 'Someshwara Swamy Temple' complex with a pond and made our way back to the town in a shared auto and a traditional Andhra lunch.
The St. Mary's School: We went down again to the area around the church, surely sixty plus years ago our lives and my parents' lives were marked around that area. We headed for St. Mary’s High School, a very reputed English medium school with around 1500 students
now. Our aim was to meet the nuns running the school, one of them Sr. Daisy. Lasrado, hailed from Pangala near Udupi. We had a good meeting with them all, but they were not around in that area in those times, and some were born much later too, it was good to know them. Then we went diagonally across the road to
the St.Mary’s Hospital. We met one nun who was a doctor and Medical Superintendent of the hospital, she was from Mangalore too, Sr.Dr. Gracia Lobo. Our family always recalled an Italian priest Rev Fr. Pagano (also Fr.Korti) who spent a lifetime serving the people there, my parents were in touch with him even in 1980, after that he returned to Italy at a ripe old age. The then Bishop of the Diocese, Vijayawada I believe Bishop Battista, had visited us too. Even though this place was quite out of the way and far off, I can

recollect many people coming from Mangalore, Madras and so on. My grandparents came there multiple times. A place, town, city is not just roads, streets, and buildings..... It has unfathomable, underlying, unseen layers of history, memories, heritage, and meanings. Most people‘s lives are deeply entangled and intertwined with the people, soil, homes, buildings, trees, 34 Veez Illustrated Weekly
that have attracted them from time to time, since their early years......always changing. ‘Urban Renewal’ or plans of demolition, rebuilding, rejuvenation can never be barriers to nostalgia and sentiments. Our identities, loves, hates need not be shackled to anything like “region” “religion” and so on. Knowing, approaching, and accepting all kinds and levels of life, culture and even spiritual forms are possible within and without. Barriers are our own creation often unnecessary, our joy at this nostalgic renewal was deeply redeeming a lifetime of memories. -------------------------------------ip98surroundings, smells and more

Is Colonial Goa Medieval?
Philomena Lawrence Gilbert Lawrence Authors: Insights into Colonial Goa (Published by Amazon) For details about the book and authors click: Insights into Colonial Goa. Goa currently promotes itself as an art historian’s destination-ofchoice. From an art and architectural perspective, the colony is aligned with Europe. Hence it
would be worth evaluating the status of Europe during colonial Goa’s heyday. In the 14th century, Europe was in the grip of a severe economic depression and struggled to deal with the Black Death caused by the Bubonic Plague (1348-1350), which devastated the population. The end of the 14th century concluded the medieval period (Middle Ages) and ushered in a revival. The 15th century (period of Quattrocento) experienced a new
36 Veez Illustrated Weekly
dawn, especially in the Italian citystates, and was referred to as the Renaissance in Europe. By the 16th century, Europe basked in its “High Renaissance” (termed Cinquecento in the art world) a time of eastern colonization and settlement. During this period, connoisseurs and art critics preferred refined rather than grandiose styles in painting and sculpture. Graceful, natural, and delicate details were the hallmarks of this period. A work of art was judged by the degree to which it imitated life and realistically projected the mood, movement, and emotions of the characters portrayed. The period is renowned for military men, bureaucrats, clergymen such as Francis Xavier (1506-1552), and linguist Thomas (Stephens) Estevao (1549-1619). Their Italian contemporaries were honored artists such as Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), Raphael Santi (1483-1520), Titian Vecelli (1490-1576), Correggio and Giorgione, to name a few, as well as northern European masters of
Renaissance art, architecture.
sculpture,
and
The Renaissance was a period when painting and sculpture were not considered an occupation (practiced by an artisan); instead, they were viewed as a special “Artistic Calling,” a way for the gifted to express individuality. The ultimate aspiration of a Renaissance architect was to “design a building for beauty of its proportion, the spaciousness of its interior and the imposing grandeur of its interior ensemble. They carved a perfect symmetry and regularity.” The period also fostered the lofty ambitions of illustrious Pope Julius II – a man with the will and means to carry out the boldest building plan. In 1506, he decided to raze the existing Basilica of St. Peter and in its place build a new structure, one designed by Donato Bramante (1444-1514), an ardent champion of the new architectural style. Two years later, Michelangelo began painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling, an arduous project which took him four years to complete. The original design of St. Peter’s Cathedral was
37 Veez Illustrated Weekly
both complex and expensive to execute. In fact, it is considered the primary cause of the Reformation, which led to the split in the Catholic Church and prompted drastic modifications in the original plans. A small-scale replica of St. Peter’s was built in Old Goa, where most of the other church buildings were designed as structures of splendor. In keeping with the artistry of the time, the purpose of a church’s design (or religious building) was to create an ambience of heaven with the creator in all His pomp and glory. Hence the stucco decorations, the brightly colored paintings, and gold trimmings were to bring down to earth the dazzling pageantry of heaven. Religious art served to spread the message of salvation to the faithful, who often could not read or write. It could also strongly influence those who read too much, were wayward, or too powerful. The churches presented various delights for the senses -- stunning visual Biblical scenes, pipe-organ music accompanying a choral group, wafting blends of incense, and lighted candles adorning the altar.
The rationale for the fresco (paintings) on the ceilings is to make it appear as if the vault has opened and the parishioners can observe the glory of heaven. Truthbe-told, as I grew up in Goa and visited several village churches, I failed to appreciate the grandeur of the façades and the delicate work of the interior, especially the embellished main altars and pulpits which used the power of art to impress and overwhelm. These are in marked contrast to modern American churches, which have spacious interiors and starkly simple altars. With the annual Carreira da India, Manuel I of Portugal soon became the richest king in Europe. Little wonder! His wealth represented income from the sale of spices from Asia; gold and ivory from Africa, and the increased tax collected from his prosperous citizens. There was a surge of optimism and visions of grandeur. Iberian affluence and influence nurtured an even more embellished form of architecture called Manueline art, evident in places of worship, and in the
38 Veez Illustrated Weekly
residencies of the elite, scattered across in towns and villages. While the 16th century was distinguished as the era of palaces, the 17th century was the era of Baroquestyle churches. The artists and architects were also show-offs, who aimed at displaying their creativity and guaranteeing their own legacy as did their prior masters, who were the unrivaled exemplars of true art. The ancient masters with skill and talent had laid down the “rules of taste” and the “importance of authority in art.” A place of worship was not merely a place in which mortals worshipped. It was a place for God, saints, and angles to make their abode along with their acolytes (nuns and priests). As an art historian put it, “Nothing is natural … it is not meant to be. It is intended to give a foretaste of the glory of Paradise.” In the 17th century, the capital of art and architecture moved from Florence to Rome. In keeping with political power, the capital shifted to Holland in the 18th century, and again to Paris in the 19th century. In the Orient, Goa was recognized as the center of
western art and architecture. The colony’s influence spread to churches in Mangalore, the Bombay-Bassein region, Cochin, and other outlying posts like Ceylon, Macau, and Timor. A superbly kept fresco is at the St. Aloysius chapel in Mangalore, painted in 1899 and known as the Sistine Chapel of India. The artist, Italian-Jesuit Antonio Moscheni, also has his works in Agra (Church of the Most Holy Savior), Mumbai (Cathedral) and Cochin (Cathedral); once again reflecting the transmission of Renaissance art across India. Unfortunately, the artist died at a youthful age in Cochin. Today several Indian artists have also taken to fresco painting of both European and Indian motifs. As Iberia’s invasion of India occurred during Europe’s postMedieval period, the colonies were spared the scourges of medievalism. However, Goa suffered from the frequent BijapurIberian skirmishes and other conflicts with the Marathas and European powers. Portuguese caravels and increased international

stained-glass windows. Paintings, too, in places of worship, schools, and residences as well as portraitpainting and frescos (wall painting) reflected the European form of art.
The nuns and priests who came to the orient in the 16th and 17th century were brimming with “High Renaissance” ideas, talents, and energy. For the artists and the architects of this period, nothing seemed impossible, and some even “achieved the apparently impossible.” Artistic ideas were freely shared, and intriguing innovations were always welcomed. Free-wheeling concepts in art, science, technology, languages, and scholarship flourished first in Goa and later in other colonial outposts. Educational institutions were built and organized along European patterns as were other buildings – churches, monasteries, and priories. Also similarly influenced were sculptures, furniture, designs and contents of the sanctuary, altars, reliquary, and tombs. The most elaborate were the accessories inside the sanctuary -- statues, monstrance, candelabras, and

The trophy discipline, commitment, and love for studies. I never believed in topping the class but had an intention to always excel in whatever I took up. One thing I always wanted in my school was trophies. The main drawback for me was that I was not into sports; I almost hated sports and never tried my hand at it, except for a little bit of basketball and occasional short put sessions. Being good at cultural activities I managed to bag lots of certificates but never a trophy. -Sonal Lobo, Bengaluru I am sure, all of you will agree when I say childhood days are the best in one’s life. Irrespective of which school we studied, or how we studied every memory is cherished. Having studied in a convent school, everything was well organized for me. The school environment inculcated in me a sense of
I so badly wanted to get a trophy as I was tired of certificates and medals, and I very well knew that my chances of getting one had literally come to an end because I was in the last phase of my school studies. When I was planning how I could get some trophies in my college days, just then I was informed that I had received the 8th rank in the Bangalore Diocese catechism Exams. This was an exam conducted
41 Veez Illustrated Weekly
for catholic students all over Bangalore. I was happy about my achievement, but I was even happier because I had seen my seniors who had passed these exams with rank were given a trophy by the school. I was extremely happy; finally, I would get a trophy. I was waiting eagerly for this day. I informed my parents and cousins. I had cleared the showcase; I had made space between all my medals and a few small cups to place my beautiful trophy.
Sonal Lobo is a budding author and an entrepreneur who resides with her husband in Bengaluru. Two of her books, ‘Whistling Words’ and ‘Thoughts Sublime’ already got published. She loves Chocolates and runs a business – “De-Gratia “ My happiness and excitement were soaring as the days passed. I was eagerly waiting for the management to announce the felicitation day. After a lot of waiting, one fine day it was announced in the assembly that the following week there would be a function and all the winners and rank holders would be felicitated.
My happiness knew no bounds. I was elated. The days that followed were difficult to pass and nights were sleepless. Finally, the day arrived, and I saw that my uniform was perfectly ironed; I was dressed for the occasion. I sat in the auditorium in the front row (we were asked to) with pride and waited eagerly for all the speeches to get over. Finally, the moment I was waiting for arrived, names were announced and each one who excelled in different fields was gifted a beautiful trophy. I could not take my eyes off the trophy. It was a glass trophy with the name of the school etched on it. Everyone received the trophy, and at the end, they announced that the students who received the rank in catechism would be felicitated. When my name was called first, I proudly marched to the dais, but I was shaken to receive a gift wrapped in golden paper rather than a trophy. I was shocked and sad. This could not happen, all the years they had given them trophies why had they given a gift this year, I was in tears. I was disappointed.
42 Veez Illustrated Weekly
Taking the gift, I sadly walked towards my class after the ceremony, all were busy congratulating me, but I did not reciprocate them and decided to go and sit in my place, holding back the tears in my eyes. Just then the Sister who had taught us catechism came forward and wished me and told me that there was a beautiful present inside and she told me that I would keep that present forever. I was fuming with anger; I knew it was some book and I dint want to open it. I had planned to throw it and keep only the certificate. I was not even interested to open it. I kept it in my bag and the entire day I was crying without letting others notice it. I came home and took the gift to throw it when my mom enquired what the gift was. I did not want to open it but still, I did not want to show how desperate I was about the trophy. I reluctantly opened the gift and was taken aback to see a Holy Bible. I was in dilemma I did not know what to do. I knew I had to respect it since we already had a Bible, so I placed it inside. For many
days I was angry. I was angry with the school, the management, and everyone for gifting me a Bible rather than a trophy. Years passed, and I graduated and started my post-graduation, I had not completely forgotten the trophy incident, but I had matured enough to understand that cribbing about it was silly. On one fine day when I sat quietly and pulled my drawer to remove my dairy just then my eyes fell on this bible, it was neat and clean almost untouched for 7 years. Something in me urged me to take it out. I was passing through teenage confusions, identity crises, and self-worth battles, just then this Bible caught my attention and when I opened it, I was happy to read a paragraph congratulating me for securing the rank. After 7 years I had read the message, I was happy. I was motivated. Slowly every day I began to read my Bible, it became my personal Bible. I began underlining the words that touched me. It became my best friend over the years. Today almost after 15 years I still have the Bible. I read it. Whenever I am down,
43 Veez Illustrated Weekly
demotivated, frustrated, and angry. The gift which once I hated has become my greatest pillar of support. Even today when I think about the incident, I realize how foolish I was to run behind something so materialistic. After that, I went on to win many trophies including a Gold Medal, but nothing gives me comfort as much as the Bible does. All the medals and certificates lie behind. Today I realized the importance of
the Gift I received if then I would have gotten a trophy it would be in the showcase with not much significance. But the Bible made a lot of difference to my life. Most of us fume when we receive what we never wanted, but maybe we should remember God gives us what we need and deserve. Whatever we receive will help us in the future without our knowledge. No gift is Useless. Let us cherish the gifts we get and preserve them with pride and love.

When does life begin? At conception or?
Preface:
conservative majority leaning towards the Republican Party’s worldview on matters of public policy. In an opinion verdict in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health issued on June 24 by a 5-4 majority, Justice Samuel Alito wrote that it was time to "return the issue of abortion to the people's elected representatives."
In June, the US Supreme Court overturned its 1973 landmark Roe v. Wade ruling and ended the constitutional right to an abortion nationwide and instead leaving it up to the states to decide on laws to govern this aspect of health care. Roe established abortion as a constitutionally protected right and effectively barred states from banning or severely restricting abortion for nearly 50 years.
As the nation grapples with the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the court's decision gave states the power to make their own laws on abortion. Many states, mostly with Republican Governors, have banned or plan to ban or severely restrict access to abortion. At least eight states have bans that are now effective, with around a dozen others set to implement bans or near-total bans soon.

Even as Pro-Choice groups have hit the streets in protests the SC ruling, prominent Democrat leaders have voiced their disapproval. Former First Lady and former secretary of state, Hillary Clinton tweeted: "Most Americans believe the decision to have a child is one of the most sacred decisions there is, and that such decisions should remain between patients and their doctors." Clinton added that the Supreme Court decision will "live in infamy as a step backward for women's rights and human rights." Former First Lady Michelle Obama said in a statement posted to social media that she was "heartbroken for people around this country who just lost the fundamental right to make informed decisions about their own bodies." She called the decision "horrifying" and "devastating" but encouraged
On Friday, July 15th, the house of representatives passed a sweeping abortion bill that would undo state restrictions on the procedure nationwide. The Democrat-led House also voted to approve legislation that would bar states where abortion is banned from making it a crime for women to obtain abortions in other states. The votes were largely symbolic taken with an eye toward pivotal mid-term elections in November. With Democrats in the Senate currently 10 votes short of the 60 votes needed to overcome a Republican filibuster, the proabortion measure approved Friday is unlikely to gain final passage into law. “We must ensure that the American people remember in November because with two more Democratic senators, we will be able to

eliminate the filibuster when it comes to a woman’s right to choose and to make reproductive freedom the law of the land,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said. Democratic leaders, including President Joe Biden and Pelosi, both Catholics, have vowed to negate the Dobbs decision’s impact by “codifying” or enshrining Roe’s provisions into federal law through passage of the Women’s Health Protection Act. However, for Republican opponents of the bill and Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas, the only Democrat and a devout Catholic, the debate goes beyond Roe v. Wade. The Pro-Life Vs debate continues:
term abortion. Another survey showed that a large majority of Catholic voters (82%) support restriction on abortion. Also, a majority of Catholic voters say they are less likely to back a political candidate who supports abortion at any time during pregnancy. This shows that pro-abortion Democrats like Biden and Pelosi are out of touch with most Americans.
Pro-Choice
Ahead of Friday’s vote, Pro-Life America released new national polling showing that 70% of voters oppose abortion without restrictions, including majorities of both pro-choice and pro-life voters. 63% of voters disapprove of legislation that would overturn nearly all state-level prohibitions on abortion and even limits on late-
The Pro-Life advocates are against the federal abortion bill because “it would force Americans to pay for abortions with their tax dollars. It would violate the conscience rights of some health care professionals by forcing them to perform abortions against their deepestheld beliefs.” The legislation would make the U.S. stand out in its support of abortion. It would place

the papal plane returning from his “penitential pilgrimage” to indigenous lands in Canada asked Pope Francis if the teaching of the Church on contraception could change?
Meanwhile, President Biden signed an executive order on Wednesday that would allow states to use Medicaid to pay for abortion services for women traveling from other states. The executive order directed the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to “consider action to advance access to reproductive healthcare services” for women, particularly those who travel out of state to have abortions. The order called traveling across state lines for abortions a “bedrock right.” Pro-life groups have already criticized the order with Pro-Life America calling it an illegal effort to “force taxpayers to fund abortion on demand until birth in Democrat-led states.” Pope Francis on birth control: While the US is caught up in a debate on abortion, reporters on
“This is very timely. But know that dogma, morality, is always in a path of development, but development in the same direction,” Pope Francis responded without giving a direct reply. The pope went on to say that he thinks that the development of Catholic moral doctrine, in general, is fine but recommended that it follows well-established theological rules. About birth control, the Catechism of the Catholic Church states that “legitimate intentions on the part of the spouses do not justify recourse to morally unacceptable means (for

The catechism is based on St. Pope Paul VI the landmark encyclical Humanae Vitae, reaffirming Church teaching against contraception, issued on July 25, 1968. In the encyclical, Paul VI warned of serious social consequences if the widespread use of contraceptives became accepted. He predicted that it would lead to infidelity, the lowering of morality, a loss of respect for women, and the belief that humans have “unlimited dominion” over the body. Little has changed since then. Pope Francis is unlikely to change the doctrine set out by Humanae Vitae.
The anti-abortion laws in Catholic Poland:
Poland is extensively Catholic. With the fall of Communism, legislation protecting the right to life for the unborn was passed in Poland in 1990. Poland’s Parliament passed a law in 1996 which allowed abortion in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy in cases of personal or financial difficulties. It also made exceptions to cases for fetal defects such as Down’s syndrome. On Oct. 22, 2020, the Constitutional Court ruled the law’s exception for fetal defects violated the constitutionally protected right to life. The exception had permitted physicians to recommend and perform abortions in cases with a "high probability of severe and irreversible impairment of the fetus or an incurable disease threatening its life." The court ruling left in place exceptions in cases of rape and incest and when the life and health of the mother are at risk. The number of legal abortions taking place in Poland decreased by 90% in 2021, following a court ruling that banned abortion in the case of a fetal medical diagnosis such as Down syndrome. Data from the Ministry of Health showed that
52 Veez Illustrated Weekly
the number of legal abortions in the country decreased from 1,076 in 2020 to 107 in 2021 following changes to the country’s abortion law. While legal abortions have been dramatically reduced in Poland, it is not clear how many illegal abortions are taking place in Poland. Abortion advocates estimate the number is in the thousands, but that claim cannot be independently verified. Women seeking abortions resort to purchasing abortion pills online. Under Polish law, women who have an abortion are not subject to criminal penalties, but those who assist them in terminating pregnancies can be prosecuted.
Pope John Paul II, the Polish Pope,
had condemned the 1996 law, saying that “A nation which kills its own children is a nation without hope.” The court struck that exception down in 1997. India: The Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971: In India, causing a miscarriage is an offence under Section 312 of the Indian Penal Code. The Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971 makes an exception allowing terminations through medical and surgical methods on specific grounds. The 1971 Act was not a response to a call of women’s rights movements; it instead was intended to cover medico-legal concerns, supported by the proponents of population control and public health. The law was amended in 2020 extending the legal period to 24 weeks of the pregnancy. The 5th National Family Health Survey, 2022, reveals that most abortions (48%) are sought due to unplanned pregnancies. A quarter of abortions are performed by women at home, increasing the risk of post-abortion

available to these basic questions in the public domain. However, the Catholics may have found a way out of it by becoming “Catholics of Convenience” or Cafeteria Catholics. They exhibit “pick and choose” behavior in matters of their faith. Which means, follow the catechism which suits them and discard the rest of the teaching. This behavior is starkly visible in the case of “confessions” where very few penitent Catholics are seen heading for mandatory Confessions in the Holy Week.

Starting on 20 May 2021, 500 years after Ignatius’ cannonball incident, the Jesuits and their companions around the world began spending the whole year celebrating that cannonball moment and the Ignatian year.

The year drew to a close on Ignatius’s feast day on July 31, 2022. The Ignatian year commemorates the 500 th anniversary of the historic day, Ignatius the soldier was injured seriously by a cannon ball in the battle of Pamplona when he was fighting against the French army which triggered the journey of his conversion from soldier to saint. The

theme of the Ignatian year is: “To see all things in Christ''. The Jesuit Superior General, Fr Arthuro Soza SJ in his letter announcing the Ignatian year wrote, “For Ignatius, a life of poverty was an expression of intimacy with Jesus, the Lord. More than words, his poverty was a sign of his interior transformation, of his growing vulnerability before the Lord, of his radical indifference to preparing himself to follow God’s will, of his sense that everything came down from above as a gift”
The Ignatian Year was celebrated in Jesuit Institutions all over the world. This book highlights the youthful days of the soldier and knight Ignatius Loyola, his worldly ambitions, the dreadful canon ball strike he suffered as he was defending the town of Pamplona against the French army, his convalescence at his Loyola home where his spiritual conversion began after reading books on Jesus Christ and other saints, his journey as a pilgrim from Loyola to the Montserrat Monastery of the Black Madonna, culminating in his ten month long spiritual conversion at the Manresa cave where he wrote the Spiritual Exercises culminating in his founding of the Society of Jesus. The book also has a chapter on Ignatian Spirituality, the miracles attributed to St Ignatius, the Examen prayer of St Ignatius, the Spiritual Exercises and the Gesu Church which contains the Chapel with the altar of St Francis Xavier with a silver reliquary containing the right arm of St Francis Xavier
