INSECURITY – DEAR SOCIETY, BE KIND!
- TaaliyanaazKhan.
The word “insecurity” has security written in it only to contradictsecurity.Insecuritycanbe facedbyanybodyandinanyareaof theirlife. It doesn’t necessarilyhave
tobethesameforeverypersonnor is it necessary that every person is insecure. Some people do not feel good enough to embrace themselves completely and are insecure. That is completely okay. Insecuritymakesyouquestionevery part of who you are and laughs on your face if something in it is
improper.
We, being a part of human society, forget all the time that the first rule oflivinginhumansocietyistoshow humanity. Failing at that will not be considered a failure by society; instead, when you are rude you will be given awards of bravery for beingsoruthless.NO.Thatisonlyin yourimagination. Yougiveyourself the award of bravery for not showinghumanitywhenyouhadto show it. Laughing at someone for lacking something according to society is also inhumane. You tell me society, what is the standard of having a perfect body, living a successful life, happiness, accomplishment, love, happy marriage? What is the standard because people seem to judge everything and find faults everywhere?
Sometimes white lies are better than being “honest” and hurting someone. Yes, the truth should be toldbutwhenthesametruthmocks someone’s confidence and brings a person down then it is not worth it. We never know the courage a personhasto gatherjust tobe able
to be present at a ceremony or talk infront ofacrowd.
It shouldn’t be surprising that most attacks on insecurities are from close family and extended family. Family is supposed to be fighting against the world for you instead it becomes the World that you wish you never encountered. I suppose family functions are mostly avoided because they can get extremely judgemental and are a threat to overall mental health. Well, sometimes.
Insecurities can be of any kind. A person who is most beautiful and accomplished according to society can be insecure too. Anywhere, anyone and anything insecure can be camouflaged and covered.
Insecure people will be there pretending to live a normal life, but secretly fighting a hundred battles, sheddingathousandtears, noteven making a hiss about it. People who are insecure do not really hate themselves nor do they completely love their flaws. Whenever an insecure person’s vulnerable areas aretouchedbyanotherpersonthen that becomes an easy trigger and well, they find themselves in the loop again Feeling insecure and not wanting to face themselves or theworld.
Ifyoumustjudgesomeonethendo it in a positive way. Be kind, it will not be a loss to you, instead it will
just make the world a better place tolive. If I haveto say somethingto an insecure person, I will reassure themtotaketheirtimetoovercome it.Maybesay Youaresobrave;you fightyourownbattleseverydayand still show up like everything is fine. Letsocietysaywhatithastoandlet society be what it has been— classical judgemental, make sure to pay heed only to the things that matter. Nobody is good enough to judgeyouotherthanyourself.

Single men had to deal with an additionalandformidableforce:the matchmaker determined to find a wife for such “a fine looking young man” (the expression sounds a lot better in Konkani). Some wives considered it their duty to assume
the role of mother figure and den mother to the “unattached” men.
Regardless of whether the men were married or not, their energy was focused on achieving their goals while avoiding the unscrupulous opportunists, who preyed on the immigrants. Their English was not good, and they practiced making sure they had it right, sotheycouldexploretheirfull potential. The struggle for survival in the OTs was soon replaced by a pursuit of success in the adopted land. Many residents had arrived from other countries and were eager to meet new people. As they wereallfarfromhome, theyrealized the need to accept their differences inwaysoflifeandcustoms.Thatwas the only way to embrace the future in a country renowned for its spectacular natural beauty and serenity.
It hasbeennotedthat GEMs achieved economic success during the colonial period. The secret of that achievement has been attributedtotheirabilitytoemulate the employer be it the colonizer
or a local manager. While this trait is acceptable and even praise worthy, it appears that many GEMs crossed the line in their zeal to fit into the upper echelons of society. In their quest to secure their hardearned new identity, they distanced themselves from other GEMs; they feared that such socializing would diminish their success. The in-built hostility of some GEMs towards othershasbeenvividlydescribedas a “crab mentality." The symbolism refers to a captured crab pulling down another crab that was successfullycrawlingout ofthetrap and thereby preventing it from escaping.
Thisanti-GEMsentimentisreflected in the failure of many in the next generation of GEM expats to speak Konkani, associate with, or to even acknowledge the presence of other GEMs. The reluctance may stem from focusing on their shortcomingsandusingthosetraits (caste, religion, attire, residential neighborhood, car driven, or excessive amounts of alcohol consumed) to serve as an excuse to
dissociate from them. On occasion, one group even suggests superiority over the others, totally failing to recognize their positive attainments. After reaching the pinnacle of their careers, for example, many GEMs cautiously resist doing anything, including socializing with fellow GEMs, that might damage their hard-won prominence. Ironically, success may ultimatelybeourdownfall. In sharp contrast to that scenario, Mumbai’s ethnically mixed groups enjoyed mutual respect, as well as cordial and friendly relations with othergroups. Onapersonal note,I received more encouragement and help from non-GEMs during my medicalcareerinMumbaithanfrom GEMmanagersandpeers.
Goa was the capital of the OTs, and after settling down abroad, the Goandiaspora’shopegenerallywas to join the ranks of mid level administrators and civil servants in the Iberian and English colonies. The Iberians and English recruited GEMs to manage their strategically placed feitorias/ forts and colonies
scattered along the coast of the Indian Ocean, as well as to take command of their ships voyaging within Asia and to Europe. Besides servingassoldiersandsailors,GEMs worked as ABC, whose numbers increased after the British occupied Goa and got to know the Goans better. As would be expected, the well-educated men and women securedbetterwhite collarjobsand lived in more upscale homes. Their formal education enabled GEMs to beemployedasancillarystaffinthe civil service (customs offices, post and telegraph centers, banks, railways, and healthcare facilities) andinthemilitarybothinIndiaand overseas. Regardless of the positionstheyheld,GEMstooktheir responsibilities seriously and were admired for devising workable solutions to intolerable problems. Theywerequietandbashful, almost to the point of being shy, but enthusiastic, well mannered, and courteous. They received promotions depending on their behavior, of course, which entailed personal innovation and loyalty.
GEMsgenerallyenjoyedtoutingthe remarkable events in their lives, which helped remind them of their good fortune. They marveled at the way a poor and lowly GEM rose through the ranks without the benefit of the proverbial silver spoonintheirmouths.
The new settlers, always eager to learn, were courageous and persevering as they transitioned or oscillated between their traditional and new outlook in thought, behavior, culture, and lifestyle. Initially, they placed their feet, one ineachboat, sotospeak–intheold countryandintheiradoptedland. It has been said that on the first day on the job, GEMs had the courage ofalioneventhoughtheywerelike timid kittens when they left India.
Most of the recent arrivals succeeded in channeling their nervousness into positive energy. Theybecameaffableandconfident. GEMswerealwayswillingtotakeon a task eventhoughthey might later wonder:“WhathaveIgottenmyself into?” Before long, the clothes closet in which only basic shirts and

This adaptation was merely the first step in any immigrant’s dream to have his/her children educated and be awarded a diplomaorcollegedegree. However, the émigrés still moved intoastratifiedsocietyofglasswalls within their community and in the larger environs. Some observed religiouspracticescafeteriastyle – a way to pick and choose what was convenient and suitable in the thriving secular culture. For others, preserving traditional symbols of religion and culture (festivals, song, dress, dance, and décor) provided a sense of continuity and stability in thenewenvironment.Whetherthey werevoluntaryorinvoluntaryexiles, they tended to recreate in their adopted country the unique features of their homes in the old country. With upward mobility in sight, most migrants refused to be pigeonholed into any strata of society, and that attitude was

Today’s diaspora, like the second and third generations of diaspora are a stride removed from their original immigrant parents or grandparents Diaspora generally lean towards dwelling in two worlds even after making the painful transition to a newlife, inanewland, findinganew job, settlinginanewneighborhood, and making new friends. They developedasenseofethnicidentity and pride, where no emotions were hidden, andnosecretswerekept. In addition, they nurtured strong, close knit neighborhoods and family cohesiveness. Within that group, the members preserved the values of the homeland, its familiarity and solidarity, as well as shared and respected spiritual and communal obligations. The social club became an extension of the home and a source of comfort and conviviality, especiallyforbachelors. That institution was the Indo
Portuguese version of cafe society sophistication, and bachelors found it a comfortable place in which to spend free time -- alternatively celebrating and denouncing their celibate state. In the evening, a few seasoned men sauntered in and sat around the billiard room, watching the play and nursing their drink. It was the place to see and be seen in especially at weddings, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve events, when both men and women, young and old donned their finest attire and danced the night away doing the "the twist" or whichever dance was in style at the time. Overall, the newbie was a man in a hurry, determined to seize every opportunity that came his way –socially or career wise. He was advised that socialization and intermarriage between different groupswasstronglydiscouragedby colonialdesign.
Back in the old country, the relocation of a portion of its residentstoforeignshoresprovided the colony with a secure supply of new money, kept the economy
afloat, and provided the colonizer with valuable foreign exchange. However, the displaced people of oneregionsowtheseedsofsuccess foranotherpartoftheworld.Within oneortwogenerations, theémigrés raise their standard of living, and some even succeed in achieving a lifestyle that is luxurious. In a relatively short period of time, the émigrés represent a mosaic of
contrasts as they evolve from relative poverty to wealth; from obscurity in a village devoid of paved roads, running water, electricity or a sewage system to a high position in western high society. The GEM’s dramatic transition matched the classic Americansuccessstory. (Tobe continued)

'Kantara' New Mega Movie
A Bird'seyeview
Tulunadu in other words Coastal Karnatakaislegendaryforitsculture and folklore as the land 'Parasurama' regained from the Seas. The Dravidian language (Tulu), legends, rituals and customs are very profound and often not properly grasped by modern thought and education. The history and ethinic anthropology are deep, complex anduniquethat it isnever sufficiently documented in all its facets. It is older than most known cultures here and Tulu is an ancient language related to Tamil and Malayalam. Quite unexpectedly a rare film "Kantara" in Kannada on aspectsof"SpiritWorship" released just a few days back has made unprecedented waves and shot through the box office and caught
the unbridled imagination of not only the whole of India, but many parts of the world and today is racing towards records and an impact that isset tocreateahistory andgeographyofitsownandcarve a new level in film culture and new entertainment heights. Kantara (Kānthāra; translated."Mystical Forest") is a 2022 Kannada language action thriller film written and directed by Rishab Shetty who isalsothemainhero, andproduced by Vijay Kiragandur, under 'Hombale Films' banner. The film starsShettyasaKambalachampion, who comes to loggerheads with an
upright Forest officer, Murali (Kishore). Achyuth Kumar and Sapthami Gowda feature in supportingroles. Thereisahueand cry that the film must bag top film awardssoon.
Kantarawasreleasedtheatricallyon September 30, 2022, in more than 250 theatres across Karnataka, and simultaneously in the US, UK, Europe, Middle East and Australia amongotherplacesglobally. After the success in Kannada, the makers announced that the film will be dubbed in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam languages and released October 14, 2022 (Hindi) and 15 October 2022 (Telugu). Though the Hindi version was announced to be released in over 800 screens across thecountry, lateritwasreportedto be released in 2500 screens in the Hindiversion.
Set and filmed in Keradi, a thick forest likeareawest of Kundapurin Coastal Karnataka. Preliminary photographycommencedinAugust 2021. The cinematography was handled by Arvind S. Kashyap, with B. Ajaneesh Loknath scored music for the film and the action
sequences were choreographed by the two time National Award winning action director Vikram More. The production design was handled by debutant Dharani Gange Putra. Kantara has received unlimited critical acclaim from both the critics and audience, alike. The performances of the cast (particularly of Rishab Shetty and Kishore), direction, screenplay, production design, cinematography, proper showcasing of the Bhuta Kola, action sequences, editing, soundtrack, and musical score received high praise. The movie became the fifth highest grossing Kannada film of 2022 and one of highest grossing Kannada films of alltime.
Background : Director Rishab Shetty cited the conflict between nature and human beings as the theme of the film, while adding
specifically that the strife between forestofficersandtheinhabitantsin his hometown Keradi, Karnataka, in the 1990s, as the source of inspiration for the film. He further added, "It is a film from our land, from our roots, stories that are heard through generations, untapped and deeply rooted to our culture." Rishab Shetty conceived thestoryin2021duringtheCOVID 19 lockdown. Elaborating, he said, "Kantara is a mysterious forest, and this is a story that happens around thearea...Thefilmtitlehasatagline callingitadhantakatheoralegend.
I did not want to give the film a straight or direct title. The word is notusedoften.WhileithasSanskrit origins, it is used in Kannada too. It isusedinYakshaganatoo, wherewe call a very mysterious forest Kantara."
Thegeneralreferencesare, Bhutaof afamily(KulaDaiva),estates(Gadde / Totada Bhuta), the hills (Guddada Bhuta) or village (Grāma Daiva).
Most of them are from local fables. Many are connected to major temples like Dharmasthala or Subramanya. Panjurli is believed to be one from "Shiva Gana" of
Dharmasthala. Hence he is also called "Annappa Panjurli". Guliga (Guligan in Kerala) is the spirit of Yama Dharma and displeasing him is supposed to bring horrific death. Itmaybeoftenseenassuperstitious andblindbelief, butethiniccultures ofhumanshavenoboundaries.
More than the Gods, Tulunadu is united by the Demigods or "Bhuta" or "Daiva", these are intermediaries of the Gods. There are a number of Daivas associated with strong and fascinating local fables. Most Bhuta temples are small to medium sized structures called Bhuta Sthāna or Bhuta Gudi. Many are attached to larger temples like Dharmasthala, Subramanya, Pandavapura temple and so on. Most estates and large farms have their own Bhuta Gudi or temples. Many famous Bhuta's of Karavali and Malenadu are named and in existence. Jumadi is supposed to be the small-pox
Goddess Māri-Amma. Some of the Bhuta are aligned with different castes. Okkuballala and Dēvanajiri with Jains. Kodamanitaya and Kukkinataya with Bunts, Kalkuḍa and Kalloorti are Blacksmiths. Bobbariya is a Mogaveera. Nicha a Koraga or from Dalit community. Controversies regarding some Bhuta identities aren't new. Some sections have chronicled Bobbariya as a benevolent Muslim sailor and son of a Muslim father and Bunt / Jain mother. But the Mogaveera community strongly believes Bobbariya is Babruvahana, son of Arjuna.ManyPāddanastoosuggest such a history. Bhuta can be a protector or destroyer depending upon how we treat them. Kola is an expensive and expansive form of spirit worship that involves culture, art, festival, entertainment, faithand almost always acts as Courts. People believe the word Daiva and
followtheorderwhenDaivaspeaks.
Colorfully painted Pātri is assisted by trained men and women called Gurikara, Gurikarthi and Mukkaldi. These rituals are watched by hundreds if not thousands as the Pātriworkshimselfintoafrenzywith the help of drums, Nādaswara and other musical instruments with artificial psychedelic lights which cancauseatrance.
Oneaccount says, ifwetrytodelve deepintotheworldofBhuta, ancestors can get in touch. Reverence to ancestors turning into worship is known across the human race. We can draw parallels with Māsti Kallu and Veera Kallu traditions from other regions of Karnataka. Dargahs and Chapels dedicatedtodifferentSaintstooare similar forms. Historians have branded Bhuta Ārādhane as a
secularandDravidianphenomenon.
But they go silent when long standing references to Vishnu, Garuda, Varāha, Rakteshwari, Chāmundi and Babruvahana are mentioned. Shiva Gana connections, usageofOm,Swastika, and such "so called Aryan" symbols too goes against the "Secular Dravidian" narratives. There is male, female, and androgynous Bhuta too. Varthe, Kalloorti, Ullalthi, Chamundi, Lekkesiri, Rakteshwari and Korathi are some of the female Bhoota. Jumadi is a Bhoota with a female body and male head, including a huge handlebar mustache. Ullalthi, Bobbariya, Kalkuḍa, Kallurti, Siri, Koti and Chennayya are ancestral spirits. They were human beings of the bygonetimes elevatedasDaivaand heldingreat awe.
Deified animals like wild boarPanjurli ( Varte feminine) and the
tiger Pilichaṇḍi are there too. Though we don't know how and when it happened, Panjurli, represented by wild boar, is also connected to the Varāha Avatāra. ThefablessingthepraisesofVarāha Swamy.VishnuMurthy,Rakteshwari andChāmundiareperhapstheonly Daiva "names" with pure Purana background. Vishnu Murthy is worshipped as Dharma Daiva among Gowda communities of Kodagu district. Most Bhuta are believedtoprotectthepeople, their properties, crops, cattle, and the forests. "Bhuta Kola" is an animist form of worship. It's called "Theyyam" in North Malabar and parts of Wayanad. The nearest Kannada word is Devva which originated from Daiva. There are over 450 Theyyams in Kerala. Kuttichathan, Muthappan, Vishnu Murthy, Padamadakki Bhagavathy, KathivanoorVeeranaresomeofthe famous Theyyams. Chathan and KuttyChathanarenamesbornfrom the western word Satan. India's first 3D movie "My Dear Kutty Chathan" wasbasedonone such Theyyam.
Philosophy and Science cannot satisfactorily explain this
phenomenon. But quite a lot of problems have been solved and evencaseshavebeensettledout of court by "Daiva Vachana" during Kola. One possibility is the "Pātri" allowing his subconscious mind to take over with the help of music, drums, dance, and songs in praise. They are called Pādd dana and are elaborate rhyming songs in Tulu language passed on from generation to generation. When the subconscious mind takes over with the Pātri detached from his present, he is likely to search the past for answers to the questions posed before him. Bhuta speaks mostly in gestures and cryptic words. The assistants (Mukkaldi) decode the words and explain in detail to devotees. Believing or not doesn't matter when it comes to Kola. They are thrilling experiences. Yakshagana of Kanara and Kathakkali of Kerala have evolved from Kola. They took the animist worshipout andturnedthem intoa Nātakaformofstorytelling.Dr.Kota
Shivarama Karantha did a lot of research on all this and wrote a lot too. Rishab Shetty has worked reallyhardtomakeKāntāraareality. His presentations of both Panjurli
and Guliga during climax are as authentic as possible. The last 20 minutes of Kāntāra are elevated by thesheergeniusoftheactor.
ThePlot : Anancient TuluNad king agrees with Daiva / Bhuta local demigod, (generally accepted as not Gods but a mediator between manandtheGod's) Animistformof Spirit worshipped by locals of Tulunadu and some parts of Malenadu of Karnataka and Kasargod in Northern Kerala, India, to trade his forest land to the local tribe’s people in exchange for happinessfromDaivas. Later, inthe present era, the king's descendant wants the land back, but succumbs tothewrathofDaiva.Later, theplot gets complicated by the entry of a strict forest officer (Kishore) who wants forest land to be untouched but is challenged by protagonist Shiva (Rishab Shetty) with the backing of King's descendants in present day (Achyut Kumar). The plot twists around - Who are: all eyeing the land? Who gets the land? Whether Daiva really exists?
The sequences of Belief on Daiva, Daivaradhane / Bhootakola and Kambala are traditions of Coastal
Karnataka (Tulunadu), India are beautifully placed in the plot of the film.
Production: Thefilmhadtopresent three timelines, i.e., 1890s, 1970s and 1990s. Since information from books was sparse, the makers took the help of the tribes residing in Keradi where it was also filmed. Costume designer Pragathi Shetty stated that the makers "travelled through the entire village and met the tribal community, who gave details about their dress." She added, "We had most of the junior artists roped in from Kundapura, and it was a challenge for me to convince them to wear tribal costumes.Wealsotookreferenceto design the costume for the forest guard, played by Sapthami Gowda. We heard each year, the colour of the outfits would change, and everything, including the badges wascustomized."Filmingtookplace in four forest locations in the area which included a set being built reflecting the 1990s. Art director Darani Gangeputra said, "A lot of natural sources were used to create the setups", further adding, "apart from this, we created a school,
temple,andatreehouse.Wehad35 people from Bangalore and 15 people from the Keradi village, who helped us to study the culture." The set involved a village, including rustic homes with cowsheds, coops for hens, courtyards, areca plantations and an authentic Kambala racetrack. Rishab Shetty learned about the intricacies of Kambala and trained for four months before performing the sequenceforthefilm inearly2022. The movie received a record breaking 99% rating from more than 60,000 reviews on BookMyShow, the first time in the history of the website. Kantara received critical acclaim from critics and audience, who praised the cast performances (particularly Shetty and Kishore), direction, writing, production design, proper showcasing of the Bhuta Kola, action sequences and technical aspects (soundtrack, cinematography, editing and musicalscore).
Rishab Shetty has come with flying colours authentically converting a tale of myths, legends, and
superstition in Kannada. Most commended the acting performancesofShettyandKishore, locations are colourful and vivid, and the background music by B. Ajaneesh Loknath represents the ethos of the land. Cinematographer
