GEM Sailors (Goan, EastIndian, Mangalorean)
For a seasoned Lascar reporting for duty on board his assigned ship became routine and all in a day’s work. As a tested sailor, he knew whattopack, whattoskip, andhow much his caixa (ship chest) would hold. Helookedforwardtothe“salt in my face" feeling and freedom of space. To make sure the taste of home would stay with him on the ship, he packed home made favorites. The cabins were usually small, narrow spaces equipped with bunkbedstowhichthesailorscould “retire” at the end of their shift. Sailors are prepared for life to be constantly busy on a ship. While
they are psyched up to accept the ship’s food and drink, they have to settle for a tin cup and pan; a marked step down from “Mother’s Food” both in quality and quantity. Fresh air and sea breeze were the only commodities in abundance, but that did not fill one’s stomach. Fromthedaytheshipsetssail, there is no rest for any deckhand. They work like beavers until late in the day clearing the decks, coiling down rigging, storing the anchors, washing down decks, practicing their intricate knots and splices, mending sails, working on overhauling various parts of the
rigging system, painting, assuming their rotation at watch, and of course, doing their own laundry. They had to keep things “ship shape” by polishing the brass trims and care for the on board animals meant for the captain’s table (as fresh meat), and help the engineer, cook, and carpenter. The deckhand hadtobeahandyman.Bynaptime, they are ready to tumble into the bunk, and the odds are every bone and muscle in their body ached. A perfectrecipeto fallasleepfast!
In the 17th and 18th centuries, Portugal found it harder to recruit soldiers and sailors including ex convicts who were traditionally hired who were willing to sail eastwards. Smith H.S. reported a marked deterioration in the quality – morale and physical fitness of the Iberian crew (tripulações) in the 17th century; he also stated that Portuguese shipping logs listed the names of a mix of Indian and S E Asianssailors, onlya minoritybeing Iberian. This likely was not only an Iberian preference issue, as most
academics report, but also a reflection of demographic realities that few authors discuss. The 16th and 17th century saw Portugal’s’ greatest male diaspora to the overseas territories, their high mortality rates in those territories, and the negative impact it was having onmarriagesand birth rates in Lusitania. By the 17th century, Portugal faced increasing competitionfromDutchandEnglish ships and by the 18th century lost her supremacy at sea. By the mid 18th century, Brazilian sugar and slaves replaced Asian spices and African gold as the main trading commodity for Portugal and the spice trade was firmly in Dutch hands. In addition to the economic factors involved, the Iberians were physically harassed and threatened by Dutch ships in Iberian ports, which impeded their sailing in the East. Wars with the English and Dutch when Portugal was in the IberianUnion(1580 1640)including theSpanishArmada in 1588 started Iberia’s naval decline and may have affected Lusitania more than Spain.
When Lusitania declined, so did the sailingofitsshipstoGoa.Thatslack was taken over by sailing from England to Lisbon Brazil Goa; and trade including the post mail was supplanted by British ships with theirGEMlascars.
Sunday was generally a true “day of rest”whenallunnecessaryworkwas postponed. An important asset is learning to socialize with the other sailors, who were generally a mixed lotintermsofpersonality, ethnicity, religion, and humor. They are the mates who make the ship the home away from home for the next few months. Being a good social mixer was important both for one’s own sanity and for the communalambience of thevoyage. Being able to read faces, the mood of shipmates, recite poetry and limericks, and enjoy humor were vital talents. It is entertaining to listen to a sailor’s salty language, learn from a mate’s encyclopedic knowledge, orapplaudhissparkling wit. With a good joke, a comedian could rock the house with laughter.

The Nineteenth and Twentieth Century
In 1807, Napoleon occupied Lisbon and its royal family fled to Brazil. In keeping with Anglo Portuguese treaty obligations, the British navy moved into Goa to prevent it from falling into French hands. The initial GEMrecruitswerehiredbytheBrits to serve as deckhands and cooks as they were free from religious restraints on handling beef, pork, alcohol and baked good Goan pão (bread), and a variety of European bread and cakes, played western musical instruments, and understoodEuropeanmanners, and table settings. The GEMs were developing these skills since 1510 when Lusitania landed on Indian shores and through cross fertilization of cultures, GEMs retained their eastern cultures and mores, andsomeadoptedawestern
religion and education, making them at home in any new environment of Asia or Africa with no culture shock. GEMs as fast learners and with their own basic education were getting acquainted with new employment skills with on the job trainingas deckhands, pipe fitters and machine operators, and personal attendants to ships’ officers. When Britain left Goa in 1815, they took their Goan employees with them both as company employees on land and sea and as personal domestic assistants. GEM cooks were sought afterbyallEastIndiaCompanyships and British passenger ships starting in the 18th century. This was followed by other support staffs tailors, waiters, barmen, and those who met other needs ayahs, butlers, nannies. Social interactions with recruiters and new employers polishedanyroughedges.
GEMs working for the Brits on sea andlandtook–offafter1830andso too did Goan migration to Bombay. Both were teaching and learning
from each other and more importantly liking and being dependent on each other. The interaction was enhanced by their education in English medium, in Bombayandelsewhere, whereevery parish had a school teaching the Latin script along with the 3Rs and music. The 19th century sawaburstofGEMmigrationwhich continued into the 20th century to fill the gaps in the colonial administrative structures as the economies were expanding. Lusophiles migrated to cities in Portugal and Mozambique, and Anglophiles migrated to cities in India Bombay, Karachi, Calcutta, and later to other smaller cities related to British outposts in India, Mideast, andAfrica. GEMsoccupied a unique position in the colonial social structure due to their cultural proximitytothe European including common religion, language, diet, lifestyle, and other cultural similarities.
Soon it was obvious to GEMs that their socio-economic success lay in the British dominions in Asia and Africa, andonlandandonsea. With Bombay Presidency of the Raj entrustedto protectshippingin the Arabian Sea, Red Sea and Persia

Likely Brits considered the GEMs as “half caste andmixedasLuso Indianwith their cultural shift to being European” with a patient and pleasant personality and a sunny predisposition with western social language and skill attributes. Having already encountered Europeans for two centuries, GEMs werefamiliarwiththeirmannerisms, lifestyles, tastes, andother
idiosyncrasies.
The 19th century culminated in several events – British occupation of Goa, Opening of the Suez Canal (1869), Steamship link (1870) and rail-link (1887) between Goa and Bombay, and the London Lisbon treaty of 1891. By now, London and Lisbon reached a strategic accommodation centered on Goa and GEMs. With the opening of the Suez Canal and introduction of steam ships, travel distance and timewasconsiderably reduced, and thevoyagewassaferastheshipsno longer had to sail past the Cape of Good Hope. Hence, more civilians and women were sailing from Europe and cruising in the Indian Ocean,toAsia,Africa,Australia, and New Zealand; leading to dramatic
increase in the recruitment of GEM crew because the European crew did not want to toil on steamships sailing through tropical waters, especially the hot and humid Red Sea. The English served as naval officers on Indian-owned ships, and Indian freight masters and hiring agents worked for the Indian and English lines. Shipping agents regularly visited the proliferating kudds of Bombay, recruiting the residents for jobs such as stewards, deckhands, and cooks for merchant and navy ships. At its peak, there were 450 kudds scattered across Bombay. It was around this time thatGEMsstartedusingtheEnglish derived term “shippie” for crewmen onsteamships.

Exposing the ‘Forced Conversions’ Lie!

*FrCedric PrakashSJSrinivasan Jain, the popular TV anchor with NDTV, has done a tremendous service to the ConstitutionofIndiaandthereby,to thepeopleofIndia!Inahard hitting exposé on his weekly segment ‘Truth vs Hype’, released on 19 November, Jain talks about the so called ‘Forced Conversions’ with
incontrovertible facts and the falsehoods and myths that are built aroundtheissue! Who is this Ashwin Kumar Upadhyay? He is obviously a memberoftheBJPandanadvocate in the Supreme Court. His claim to fame comes from the several Public InterestLitigations(PILs)hehasfiled – many of them are apparently frivolous and are summarily dismissedbytheCourtsandevenat one time referred to a PIL as Publicity Interest Litigation. In August 2021, he was arrested in
In April 2021, a three-judge bench ofJusticesRohintonFNariman,B.R. GavaiandHrishikeshRoy,dismissed asimilar‘forcedconversion’petition by Upadhyay and had even threatened to impose heavy costs if he persisted with the petition. The bench at that time had opined that any religious conversion law would be violative of the constitution as the constitution clearly allows joining of any religion of one’s choice and that’s why the word “propagate” is in the Constitution. The bench termed “very harmful” the petition that asked for a strict central law to check religious conversionandobservedthatadults are free to choose their faith. The
bench also cautioned senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayan, who represented Upadhyay in the matter. Upholding Article 25 that allows people to profess, practice and propagate religion, Justice Nariman asked “What kind of a petitionisthis?Thisisaveryharmful petition. If you are going to argue this, wearegoingtoimposeaheavy cost on you”, said Nariman; he added, “There is a reason why the word ‘propagate’ is there in the Constitution. You have to have some meaning for that word. There is no reason why somebody above 18 cannot choose one’s own religion or somebody else’s religion,” The petition was immediatelywithdrawn!
Some months ago in June 2022, another of Upadhyay’s petitions in the Delhi High Court received the same fate. Marking an observation on the fundamentality of Article 25 of the constitution, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva said, “(religious)conversion is not prohibited in law. Every person has a right to choose and profess any religion of his/her choice. It is a
Constitutional right. If someone is forced to convert, then it's different issue but to convert is a person's prerogative.” The bench then asked Upadhyay, “What is the basis for your prayer? There is no material basis on record. No document, no instance. You have given three Supreme Court judgments and the rest is your averment”. Clearly taking him on his lies that there are several cases of mass conversion, the bench queried, “You have said mass conversion. Where are statistics? Has any aggrieved come forward?"
Interestingly,on14November2022, the two judge bench of the Supreme Courtconsistingof Justice M.R. Shah and Justice Hima Kohli, responding to Upadhyay’s latest petition, directed the Central Government to inform the Apex Court what steps it intends to take to curb deceitful or compulsory religious conversions. The Order states,“Theissuewithrespecttothe allegedconversionofreligion, ifitis found to be correct and true, is a very serious issue which may ultimately affect the security of the
nation and violate citizens’ right to freedom of conscience and right to freely profess, practice and propogate(sic)religion. Therefore,it isbetterthattheUnionGovernment may make their stand clear and file a counter on what further steps can be taken by the Union of India and/or others to curb such forced conversion, may be, by force, allurement, or fraudulent means”.
upholding Article 25. The next hearing is scheduled for 28 November and as the Order states, “Counter, if any, on behalf of the Union of India be filed on or before 22.11.2022.”
Upadhyay demands a Central law against ‘fraudulent religious conversionandreligiousconversion by intimidation, threatening, deceivingly luringthrough giftsand monetary benefits’, as it offends Articles 14, 21, and 25. His petition states,“thereisnotevenonedistrict which is free of black magic, superstition and religious conversion... Incidents are reported every week throughout the country where conversion is done by intimidating, threatening, luring through gifts and monetary benefits.” The very fact that the Supreme Court has even agreed to entertain this recent plea is in dire contrast to its vowed position of
The track record of Justice M. R. Shahclearlyshowsthathedoesnot have a high degree of credibility in safeguarding the objectivity of the judiciary or for that matter the Constitution of India. It is certainly notprudentforanysittingjusticeof any Supreme Court to refer to the Prime Minister of one’s country as “the most popular, loved, vibrant and visionary leader” as he did so in a function in Ahmedabad in February2021! Earlierin2018,as Chief Justice of Patna High Court termed PM Narendra Modi as a “model and hero”. His closeness both to Modi and Amit Shah is the talk of the town and has also been the subject of controversy and litigation. Justice Shah is due to retireinMay2023,onecertainlywill notneedmuchofanefforttoguess the ‘suitable reward’ which awaits him!
Duringthecourseofthehearingon 14 November, Justice Shah apparently said that “people get converted for rice bags!” His statement is entirely fallacious; however, even if there is an iota of truth in it does he not have the dutytofirstpulluptheGovernment andquestionthemastowhypeople are hungry and poor in the country whentheGovernmentsplurgeson non essentials like statues and in the jaunts of the Prime Minister??? He needs to pay attention to the fact that India still has the highest numberofpoorpeople(almost229 million) in the world. Besides, India hosts the highest number of poor children. 97 million children (21.8% of Indian children) are poor in the country. The 2019 2021 data revealed that around 16.4 per cent of the Indian population is poor; of these,4.2 % live in extreme poverty since their deprivation score is above 50%. About 18.7% of the population is vulnerable and could be pushed into extreme poverty. Of these, two thirds fall into the category where one person is at
least deprived of nutrition. The 'Human DevelopmentReport2021 22 Uncertain Times, Unsettled Lives: Shaping our Future in a Transforming World', by the UNDP, India is ranked 132 among 191 countriesandterritoriesonthe2021 Human Development Index (HDI). India’s ranking in Global Hunger Index 2022, also released in October, is now a pathetic 107 out of121countries!
Upadhyay’s petition also claimed (without any fact), that if forced conversions were not checked, Hindus would soon become a minority in India. (Srinivasan Jain also challenged him on this during theexpose, forwhichUpadhyayhad no answer) There could not be a biggerliethanthis!Oneonlyhasto visittheCensusdata2011,torealise that the growth rate of minorities is on the decline! Unfortunately, we live in Goebbelsian times: tell a lie a thousand times and people will soonacceptitas thetruth!
Though there are State anticonversion laws (which are patently unconstitutional), there is no hard data, toproveanyso called‘forced’
conversions; no is there any substantial information on cases filed under these laws and convictions made by courts of law and upheld by higher courts. The argument then is that if the state laws have not succeeded, what is the guarantee that a central law would put an end to forced conversions. In January 2021, Madhya Pradesh came up with a stringent ordinance; within the first 23 days, as many as 23 cases were filed alleging forced conversions; none of them have resulted in conviction. There has been just one convictionbythelowercourtoutof sixteencasesundertheUPlaw. There have also been several incidents of conversion to Hinduism. In 2014, 57 Muslim families with more than 200 members converted to Hinduism in
Agra. In 2021, 300 Muslims in Haryana converted to Hinduism. Ironically enough the anti conversion laws do not seem to apply to them and innocuously referred to as ‘ghar wapasi’ (homecoming). On5October,more than 8,000 Dalits left Hinduism and embraced Buddhism in a mass conversionrallyinDelhi.Afewdays later on 14 October, more than 100 Dalitmenandwomendidthesame, throwing pictures of Hindu deities into the Krishna River to renounce their faith. The anti conversion laws basically perpetuate a casteist and patriarchal society because all of them had been enacted on the premise that women, SCs and STs are vulnerable, needprotection and cannot take vital decisions in their lifeontheirown.Embracinganother religion away from Hinduism is a
clear statement that they want to live a more dignified and humane lifeandthereisabsolutelyno‘force’ intheirvoluntarydecision!
The point of the matter, however, is not whether one has the right ‘to convert another’ but whether as an adult citizen of India, one has the right to choose a religion of one’s choice. Article 25 of the Constitution of India guarantees the freedom of conscience, the freedom to profess, practice and propagate religion to all citizens and Article 18 of the Universal DeclarationofHumanRightsasserts that “Everyone has the right to freedomofthought, conscienceand religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance”.
Onealsoneedstoask:iftwomature consenting adults would like to marryeachother, whatrighthasthe State to stop them from doing so?
Then, ifaDalitgirlwantstoembrace Buddhism, since it is the religion of her husband and will perhaps lead to enhancing the quality of her life, doesshehavetherighttodoso?Or for that matter, if a Christian girl wants to freely embrace Islam after marrying a Muslim, does she also havetherighttodoso?Whyshould theState(withitsbrutalmechanism and vigilantes) or anyone else, interfere in matters which are personal and private and clearly violative of Article 21: the right to privacy. On 24 August 2017, the Supreme Court of India in a historic judgement declared the right to privacy as a fundamental right, protected under the Indian Constitution. In declaring that this right stems from the fundamental right to life and liberty, the Court's decision has far-reaching consequences for every citizen. In an order that is expected to have a significant impact, the very day of the Supreme Court order 14 November, the Madhya Pradesh High Court held that the provision of the state’s anti conversion law requiring prior notice to a district
magistrate for religious conversion violated a person’s fundamental right to life and privacy and so was unconstitutional.
One also needs to take note that addressing a huge gathering of Mahars in Bombay in May 1936, Dr B.R.Ambedkaropenlyspokeouthis ideas on conversion and why he consideredittobethebestandonly route towardsemancipation saying, “I tell you all very specifically, religion is for man and not man for religion; to get human treatment, convert yourselves. Hindu society doesnotgiveequalityoftreatment, but the same is easily achieved by conversion.” Are those in power listeningtoAmbedkartoday?
The ‘forced conversion’ issue is certainly a lie, a ‘bogey’, foisted on the nation! It is clearly meant to defocus from more important and
pressing issues plaguing the nation today: which include, the growing impoverishment of the poor, rampant corruption, and the total lack of Constitutional governance by those in power! Besides, with elections coming up, a ploy like ‘conversions’ becomes an emotive andmanipulativesubject!Itisleftto be seen, that if in keeping with the rights guaranteed in the Constitution and as the nation observes ‘Constitution Week’, whetherthistwo-memberbenchof the Apex Court will have the couragetostandupforwhatisright and appropriately penalise the petitioner of such a frivolous and unsubstantiated petition?

When I was at Montfort, Vincent Choong, a wealthy Chinese Malaysian became a Catholic as did another Chinese boy from Burma. For Chinese, they are very open to Christianity and China has an estimated 80 million Christians whichmeans no countryinAsia has moreChristians!

Second Vatican Council resulted in manyCatholicsquittingtheChurch. The teaching of the Church changed. Some tried to justify changes by saying there is no change in teaching, it is better understanding. They were fooling themselves. Catholic Church had expanded till 1962. That year was the start of Second Vatican Council. Catholics were in high positions. John F. Kennedy was President of USA. NgoDinhDiemwasPresident of South Vietnam.
