part of Belle known as Padubelle at Pajaka. The Papanashini river running through Belle divides the village into Moodubelle and Padubelle. The famous painter K.K. Hebbar was born at Kattingeri, which is part of Moodubelle. Another illustrious living personality Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan Dr. Belle Monappa Hegde was the Vice Chancellor of MAHE University, Manipal. Belle is also the home for many temples, the most famous being Shri Mahalingeshwara temples at

Kattingeri, Devaragudde and Padubelle. The St. Lawrence Church is 122 years old. The Belle Church Aided Higher Primary School is 110 years old. Moodubelle also Has St. Lawrence KannadaMedium and English Medium High Schools and St.Lawrence PUCollege. The population of Moodubelle is around17,000. Agriculturehasbeen one of the chief sources of livelihood of the people of the village. Manyfamilies havebeen

engaged in jasmine cultivation. However,sincethelastfourdecades many youngsters have been pursuing their livelihood in Gulf countries and other parts of the world as well as in major cities of India such as Mumbai and Bangalore.

Establishment oftheLions Club: The temples, church and schools were the chief centres of religious, social, and cultural activities. There was no other secular organization whichcouldrespondtotheneedsof the people of the village. Under these circumstances, Commodore

Jerome Castelino who had by then retired from service in the Indian Navyandhadreturned tohisnative place, Moodubelle, felt that an organization suchastheLions Club, aninternational organization would beanidealserviceplatform toserve the various needs of the people, especially those who are poor and marginalized.

In 1997, Professor Wilfred D’Souza hailing from Moodubelle who a lecturer intheMilagres College was, Kallianpur was the president of the Lions Club, Udupi, the senior most club in the Udupi District with over

hundred members. Commodore Jerome Castelino approached Prof. Wilfred D’Souza and requested him to help in starting a Lions Club in Moodubelle. Prof. Wilfred D’Souza readily agreed and contacted service minded persons from Moodubelle. He conducted two brainstorming meetings of likeminded people of Moodubelle following which 32 persons including the parish priest of St. Lawrence Church, Rev. Fr. Charles Lewis agreed to be themembers of theLionsClub. Commodore Jerome Castelino was unanimously elected as the Charter President of the proposed Lions Club,Moodubelle. After completing the necessary formalities of starting a new Lions Club at Moodubelle sponsored by the Lions Club, Udupi with Ln. Prof. Wilfred D’Souza as the Extension Chairman, the Lions Club, Moodubelle was inaugurated on 15 December 1997 in St. Lawrence PU College Hall,Moodubelle. The inauguration of the Lions Club, Moodubelle was conducted by the then District Governor of District 324 D4,late Ln. G.Naganur. On the same day, Ln. Commodore Jerome Castelino and Ln. Devadas Hebbar

were installed as the Charter President and Charter Secretary respectively. The Charter issued by the President of the International Association of Lions Club having headquarters at Chicago, USA was presented to the Lions Club, Moodubelle on17 May1998 by the District Governor late Ln. G. Naganur. Sincetheestablishment oftheLions Club, Moodubelle, its members have been actively involved in various service activities-both long term and short term benefiting the people ofthevillage. Major Service Activities: A. DentalClinic:

One of the first long-term service activities undertaken by the Lions Club, Moodubelle was the Dental Clinic.Whilethereweretwomedical clinics that catered to the basic health issues of the villagers, there was no dental clinic and as such

people withdental problems hadto travel all the way either to Manipal, Udupi or Karkala to solve their dental problems. Under these circumstances, Ln. Commodore Jerome Castelino approached the College of Dental Science, Manipal and requested the Dean of the College late Dr. K.S. Bhat MDS to help the Lions Club, Moodubelle to start a Dental Clinic in Moodubelle. He readily agreed and installed one dental chair with necessary equipment in a hired room in Moodubelle town. This was inaugurated on 26 January 1999. This was a long-awaited need and facility that was welcomed by the people. As more and more people with dental problems frequented the Dental Clinic, one dental chair was inadequate, anda second chair was installed some time later. When the LionsClub,Moodubelle constructed its own building on the 20 cents land donated by Prof. Wilfred D’Souza, the Dental Clinic was shifted to the new building on 19 February 2002. A third dental chair wasadded foreseeing theincreased demand of dental patients. Hundreds of dental patients took

advantage of the free dental treatment. The dental clinic run by the Lions Club, Moodubelle was a model for other Lions Clubs in the Lionistic District spread acrossUdupi, Davanagere, Shivmoga and Chitradurga. Padmashri Dr. R.K.Bali-President of the Dental Council of India along with Dr. Shobha Tandon-Dean of the Dental College of Science in Manipal and 23 Deans from various Dental Colleges in India visited the Dental Clinic in the Lions Club, Moodubelle in February 2002. They were highly appreciative of the functioning of the DentalClinic ina most hygienic condition. They were impressed so much that one of the Deans from Bihar commented, “Leave alone in rural even in urban cities such a clinic is hard to find”. The Dental Clinic has received several district and international awards.

The Dental Clinic of the Lions Club, Moodubelle arranged weekly cleaning of teeth, extraction of decayed teeth andfilling ofteeth of the neighbouring school children andvillagers onceinafortnight and provided required treatment.

B. Construction ofthe Lions Seva Bhavan:

The Lions Club, Moodubelle was inaugurated on 15 December 1997 in the premises of St. Lawrence Composite PU College. Thereafter the monthly meetings and other Lionisticfunctionsusedtobeheldin thesamepremises. Gradually, itwas feltthattheLionsClub,Moodubelle should have its own building and members came forward to contribute to this project. On the dayoftheinauguration oftheLions Club,theExtension Chairman ofthe Lions Club, Moodubelle, Ln. Prof. Wilfred D’Souza had donated 20 centsoflandfortheconstruction of abuilding forthe Club. The foundation stone of the Lions Seva Bhavan was blessed on 5 February 2001 by the representatives of three religionsHinduism (Shri Ganapathy Bhat), Christianity (Fr. Anil Cornelio), and

Islam (Qazi Abdul Qadar) and laid by Ln.Prof.Wilfred D’Souza. The inauguration of the Lions Seva Bhavan constructed at the cost of Rs.12,58,000 washeldon20January 2002. Swami Poornakamanandaji, President of the Ramakrishna Matt, Mangalore inaugurated the newly built Lions Seva Bhavan. Incidentally, Commodore Jerome Castelino and Swami Poornakamanandaji were serving together as sailors in the Indian Navy way back 1955-56 on board IndiaNavalShip Delhi.

As the space in the Lions Seva Bhavan was not sufficient to conduct various service activities and functions, it was extended with the financial grant of Rs. 16,50,000 from Lions Clubs International Foundation. The extended Lions Seva Bhavan was inaugurated by PMJF Ln. Vinod KhannaInternational Director on 13 April 2008.

In 2017, the Lions Seva Bhavan was renovated with tiles flooring, false ceiling, and expansion of the stage. The side metallic doors and windows were replaced with sliding doors. This provided additional spaceand gaveanew look to the

auditorium. Later, the front metallic collapsible door was replaced by a wooden designed door.

C. Construction ofToilets:

Following the preliminary discussion among the members, thistask wasaccepted and required infrastructure was arranged in the St. Lawrence Composite PU College premises by the Lions Club. The subsidised Mid-day Meal scheme for the students at theSt. Lawrence Composite PU College was launched on1September 2003.

E. Approach Road to Kongibail: In October 2005 about 20 families residing in Kongibail approached the Lions Club through Ln. Commodore Jerome Castelino to helpthem inproviding anapproach road. This involved convincing abouttenfamiliestopartwithsome

portion of their land for the construction of the road. the Lions Club, Moodubelle conducted a meeting with the stakeholders and was able to convince the families. They agreed to part away the required portion of land and the Lions Club constructed the road at the cost of Rs. 65,000. It was inaugurated by the then Lion District Governor Late Prof. Ln. Wilfred D’Souza.

F. EyeCamps:

Lions Club Moodubelle has been in the forefront in the conduct of health care camps in particular Eye Camps keeping in view the ideal of the Lions Clubs International “Sight First”. These camps have been regularly conducted for the last twenty years in the month of September in association with prominent Krishna Prasad Eye Hospital Udupi. Besides testing of eyes,thebeneficiaries who required cataract operation and related treatment have been provided free of cost by the Krishna Prasad Eye Hospital. Moreover, those who needed spectacles were provided with thesameatconcessional rates. The Eye Camps organized by the Lions Club, Moodubelle have been

quitepopular amongthevillagers in andaround Moodubelle. Besides regular annual eye camps, other health related camps such as general health checkups by various specialists have been conducted on aregular basis.

G. Honouring ofEx-Servicemen:

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Goa Liberation War (1961) and Bangaldesh Liberation War (1971) Commodore Jerome Castelino built a War Memorial in thecourtyard of hisresidence ‘Vana Sourabha’ to commemorate the martyrs in both wars. The War Memorial was inaugurated on 16 December 2011 by the then Governor Ln. Jayakar Shetty Indrali. OnthisdayalltheEx-Servicemen of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada Districts who had participated in these wars were felicitated by the Lions Club,Moodubelle.

Other Service Activities:

A. ‘Home For Homeless”

Under the scheme of providing ‘Home for Homeless” the Lions Club, Moodubelle had helped around 14 BPL families in constructing, renovating, and repairing houses in the village locality.

B. BusStands and TrafficMirror

For theconvenience and comfort of the people travelling by buses, the Lions Club, Moodubelle erected around 6 Bus Stands on the main road connecting Udupi, Karkala and Shirva. At prominent road junctions traffic mirrors were also installed to prevent possible accidents.

C. National Festivals

The Lions Club, Moodubelle has been observing allnational festivals such as Republic Day, Independence Day, ‘ Vana Mahotsava’, Teachers’ Day, Mother Teresa Day, Gandhi Jayanthi along with ‘Swach Bharath Programme” andChildren’s Day.

D. Religious Festivals

In order to maintain and promote communal harmony among the villagers, the Lions Club, Moodubelle has been conducting important religious festivals suchas Deepavali, EidandChristmas.

E. Honouring Meritorious Students

The Lions Club, Moodubelle has beenencouraging thestudentswho excelintheiracademicperformance by honouring and providing financialincentives every year.

Donation ofVehicles to Educational Institutions

In 2010 when the Lions Club, Moodubelle came to know that the St. Lawrence Educational Institutions needed school bus, it provided aMaruti Van to transport students from home to school and back.ThecostoftheMarutiVanwas Rs. 3 lakhs. In the same year Ln. Commodore Jerome Castelino donated a 20-seater school bus to St. Lawrence English Medium School in commemoration of his Golden Jubilee of his marriage. The cost of thebus was Rs.9 lakhs. This bus is still in service. Today, on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee celebration of the Lions Club, Moodubelle, a40-seater school bus was donated andwasinaugurated. Conduct ofDistrict Level Events The Lions Club, Moodubelle had hosted five Regional Conferences

since its inception in 1997. Out of these five, three Regional Chairmen belonged to the Lions Club, Moodubelle. The other two belonged to Udupi and Subahshsnagar LionsClubs. Besides three Lions District Cabinet Meetings and PST Seminars were conducted inthisclub.

TheLions Club ofShirva-Manchakal was sponsored by the Lions Club, Moodubelle in2007.

The members of the Lions Club, Moodubelle metthe expenditure of the renovation to the Lions Seva Bhavan. They also generously contribute to major service activities.

TheLionsClub,Moodubelle sinceits inception has been conducting a number of major service activities, the most important being the Free Weekly Dental Camps conducted with the support of the Dental College of KMC,Manipal. The other ongoing medical related camps include annual Free Eye Checkup camps conducted with the support of Prasad Netralaya, Udupi under the able guidance of Dr. Krishna Prasad; general health checkup camps; bone density checkup camps; blood donation, etc. The Lions Club, Moodubelle had provided 120 toilets to the needy families in and around Moodubelle village with the financial support of Rs. 6 lakhs through Padmabhushan Dr.BMHegde while hewastheVice Chancellor of MAHE. Under the schemeof‘HomeforHomeless’, the Lions Club, Moodubelle hadhelped in constructing and repairing 14

houses. For the convenience of the travelling public, the Lions Club, Moodubelle had provided about ten Bus Stands and Traffic Mirrors. Financial help hasbeen provided to the poor students and sick people. In2010, one vanand one 25-seater schoolbus,bothcostingRs.12lakhs were donated to St. Lawrence Educational Institutions.

It is a matter of great honour and pride totheLionsClub,Moodubelle that the Charter President Commodore Jerome Castelino and Charter Secretary Ln. Devadas Hebbar have been elected as the President andSecretary respectively in the year of the Silver Jubilee of the Club. This is a rare occasion in thehistory ofLionism.

delivered the inaugural address. Sr Dr M Venissa A C., the Principal addressed the gathering on this occasion. The first session was conducted by Gp Capt KK Bhaduri Psych Technique Head. During the session Gp Capt Bhaduri addressed the participants on 'why defence' and stressed on, how prestigious, exciting and challenging is a career in defence. He briefed the participants on the criteria for entrance, types of entries, UPSC, AFCAT, MET,NCC special entry and

SEC and also entrance process and qualifications for Indian Army and Indian Navy.The session concluded with a brief introduction to Agnipath Scheme - which allows recruitment of soldiers into noncommissioned rankforaperiod of4 years.

The second session was conducted by Ms Nischitha Barke - Scientist, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Ms Nischita’s session focussed on the ample career opportunities available for a Psychology Major graduate. The participants were apprised of the innumerable career opportunities available the under two categories viz. DRDO and Defence. The internship and entrance qualifications required for the various posts at the Defence Institute of Psychological Research (DIPR) were also discussed. The session concluded with a detailing of the temporary and contract jobs available in Defencefor Psychology graduates and those with other higherqualification inPsychology in the field ofCounselling and Clinical

On 8/12/2022 votes of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh elections were counted. Arvind Kejriwal hadtalked of AAP winning in Gujarat. Isudan GadhviwasCMcandidate. AAPwon

AAPcontested 67 seatsout of68 in HimachalPradesh and lost themall. It had trouble with CM candidates. Two left and joined BJP. AAP leaders thought it was a hopeless case and abandoned it. AAP’s vote share was 1.10%. Congress won 40 out of 68, BJP25 and Independents 3. However, AAP had a consolation prize. Itbecame anational party. It was a state party in Delhi, Punjab,

andGoa. Getting 6%or more votes made it a stateparty in Gujarat and by being astate party in four states itbecameanationalparty. Itjoined the list of BJPS, BSP, Congress, CPI, CPI(M), NCP,NNPand TMC. Same day Election Commission approved name change of Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) and it became Bharat RashtraSamiti (BRS).

AAP has no members in Lok Sabha andhas10membersinRajyaSabha. Ithadwon4seatsin2014 and1seat in 2019 in Punjab. Bhagwant Mann was the winner in 2019. When he became CM he resigned from the Lok Sabha seat. In the ensuing election AAPlost.

For a party that began on 26/11/2012 AAP has made good progress in10 years. To remain the nationalparty, itwillhavetocontest elections in many states and have a 6% vote share. It does not have great leaders in the states. Many whowereinAAPin2012 orlaterare out of it. It will have to win Lok Sabha seats. To be PM one should havethesupport of272members in Lok Sabha. Arvind Kejriwal has competition from KCR, Mamata Banerjee and many others.

Arvind Kejriwal, Bhagwant Mann, and other AAP leaders had campaigned extensively in Gujarat. They were regularly in the news. They talked of the Delhi model and promised freebies. The majority of voters did notwant freebies.

Olympian and India’s 1970 Asian Games 4x100m relay bronzewinning team member Kenneth Powell died on Sunday December 11,2022, inBengaluru, theAthletics Federation ofIndiasaid. Hewas82. An Arjuna awardee of 1965.

Powell was one of the top sprinters of the country in the 1960s. He overcame the disappointment of failing to make it to the 1962 Asian Games and played a key role in the Indian 4x100m relay team reaching the semifinal of the 1964 Olympic GamesinTokyo.Similarly, leftoutof

the Asian Games in Bangkok in 1966, he remained motivated and helped India get the 4x100m relay bronze in 1970 in Bangkok. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) condoled the death of Powell. AFI President Adille Sumariwalla saidthesporthaslosta gentleman sprinter in Powell’s passing. “Indian athletics grew in stature back in the 60s because of the efforts of athletes like Kenny Powell who won 19 titles in sprint events in the National Open Championships and National InterState Championships,” he said.

It was not until he was 19 when he moved to Bangalore to work with the Indian Telephone Industries that he took upathleticsseriously undertheeyes of Rangers Club coach Krishna. Powell rose to claim the sprint double in the inaugural National Inter-State Athletics Championships in Allahabad in February 1963, winning the 100m race in 10.8 seconds and the 200m in 22.0 seconds. Five years after he quit competitive athletics at the senior level in 1970, Powell represented Karnataka in the National Handball Championships. He returned to the

track and won the 40-44 age group 100m silver in the Asian Masters Athletics meet in Singapore in 1981. Later, he also made it to the final of the 45-49 age group in World Masters Championships in Melbourne. Traditional Mangy, mouth-watering chicken curry prepared with aromatic ingredients. This curry is one of my favourites specially served after delivery for mothers & they used to prepare this only with NatiKole |Gavnti chicken��

This curry is normally prepared without added coconut, but I have included littleto balancespiciness.

INGREDIENTS:

1/2 - 1kg chicken

CHICKEN CUMIN PEPPER CURRY KOMBI
74 Veez Illustrated Weekly FOR MASALA: 3Kashmiri Chilli 3Bedgi Chilli 2tsp Cumin 15 - 20 pepper corns or more as required 1tsp poppy seeds 2onions 1tbsp coriander 3- 4garlic cloves 1/4 tsp turmeric powder 2tbsp coconut Small ball of tamarind

Take kadai with oil & ghee. Once hot add onion & fry until golden brown. Retain little fried onion for garnish.

FOR MASALA FRYING: 1tbsp coconut oil 2tsp ghee 1onion METHOD:
Take cleaned, washed chicken pieces with bones.
Dryroast allseeds,chillies,onion& garlic. Grind all ingredients under masalainto finepaste.

Add ground masala paste & keep stirring until colour changes into little darker, brighter & oil seperates.

grinder washed masala water. Adjustsalt&consistency.Cookuntil done.Simmer verywell&takeitoff.

TIPS:

Adjust all ingredients as per your taste & spice control. Increase or decrease����.

This curry canbe prepared without adding coconut.Ihaveadded little to adjustspiciness.
