Things have started to heat up as we get into summer, literally and figuratively. We can expect new model launches and the entry of new brands into the Philippines, making life for car buyers even more exciting, albeit just a bit more confusing with more to choose from. But that’s the best thing, finding that vehicle that’s just for you. Car makers are also standing behind their offerings with solid warranties to give you peace of mind, no matter which side of the world your choice of brand comes from.
In this month ’s Fresh Off the Boat, GAC levels up their MPV game with the M6 Pro, Hyundai ’s much-awaited All-new Sta Fe is sure to get your attention, craving a little luxury? Lexus introduced us to the LBX, the smallest hybrid crossover in their lineup. Mazda adds two variants to their premium crossover, the CX-5, and there’s the MINI Clubman Final Edition. NissanPH revamps their Urvan lineup and the Suzuki XL7 is now available in hybrid form.
As always, we update you on the local industry news which includes the entry of Seekr and Lynk & Co into the market. The BMW X6 is reviewed and we have an interesting bit you’d like about microcars in the UK, because before the tiny Smart car was a thing.
Our cover story is as usual in depth look at the one of the more desireable brands and models in the market, the BMW 5 Series.
In motorsports, we get a wrap up of the gruelling, yet immensely fun Petron Philippine Overland Expedition and an overview of the coming MSCC Mazda Miata Spec Series for 2024.
We’re up to our necks in events and previews and launches, and we at AutocarPH can imagine how much more difficult it probably is to decide on which brand, model etc.to get what with the multitude of choices that are suddenly available here in the Philippines. Well, while you decide, we’ll continue to make sure we inform you on what’s out there and what’s coming.
Remember, hydrate… its hot out there!
Binky P. Siddayao ROLLIN’ WITH THE HEAT
y the time this is published the El Nino phenomenon may have passed or may still be lingering.
The heat the past months have been unpleasant and stingy to both the human flesh and our other worthwhile “friend,” our cars. With the heat comes one’s pecuniary choices. And one of these choices is getting and making a right decision when searching for a proper car tint.
But before making your final decision on what one can only afford you may need to learn more of what you may be purchasing and using for the next 4 to 5 years.
The important words are VLT, IR, TSER, & UV mean something. There are differences, in terminology and may get overwhelming. It would be best to understand before swiping your credit cards.
To understand more go search for an Encyclopedia Britannica!
Science says Ultraviolet is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength from 10 nm to 400 nm. UV radiation is present in sunlight, and this is what causes the most damage to our eyes, skin, and furnitures.
So UVR (Ultraviolet Rejection) would be the percentage of UV that is rejected. In the window film market nowadays, it can go as high as 99%. This is important and one of the main points that
everyone needs to look for while purchasing window films/tints. Visible light transmitted (VLT) is the ratio of visible solar energy (380 – 750nm) that passes through the glazing system. VLT value is the percentage of visible light the film/tint allows through from the exterior of a vehicle, building or home to the interior. Based on your preference, this determines how much light you want to enter. Meaning light, medium, dark (warning: A super dark black may be hard to drive at night).
The lower the VLT percentage, the darker the tint is and the more outside light it blocks. For example, a window film/tint that has a VLT value of 5% indicates that the window film only permits 5% of the exterior light to pass through and enter while a film with a 50% VLT value allows 50% of the light from outside to pass through.
In the local market, when “professionals” (there are and they are rare) are referring to a
film/tint, they typically identify it by the film/tint’s color and VLT value (percentage). For example, a charcoal-colored tint with a VLT of 5% is known as charcoal 5%. Likewise, a green colored tint film with a VLT of 50% is called green 50%. This will give you a gist of how window film/tint suppliers and retail shops name their product range. So, if you hear someone says charcoal 5%, you will automatically know the color is charcoal and the VLT is 5%, which means it is dark inside as only 5% of light is allowed in.
Infrared radiation (IR) is electromagnetic radiation with longer wavelengths than those of visible light and is therefore generally invisible to the human eye. It is sometimes called infrared light. To sum it up, we cannot see it with our eyes, but we can feel it. It is heat!
IRR is the total infrared light being rejected.
The Total Solar Energy Rejected (TSER) is the percentage of the total solar
energy that is rejected. TSER includes all three: visible light, infrared and ultraviolet. The higher the percentage, the higher the percentage of solar energy deflected. Most window film/tinting shops use Infrared Rejection (IRR) as a guide to the level of heat rejection, but IRR only covers one-third of TSER. Internationally, TSER is used as a guide as it is a more accurate way of measuring heat rejection as it includes all three (visible light, infrared and ultraviolet).
Ply is used to display the number of separate layers of polyester film that are used in the manufacturing process to make a particular window film product. Example: A 1-ply product would consist of one single layer of polyester film where a 3-ply product would be made with three separate layers of distinct types of polyester film.
Lastly and rarely cared is Mil (The Thickness). It would be the unit of measurement equal to one thousandth of an inch (.001”). To know how thick or thin a film/ tint is, you will need to refer to Mil. 1 MIL = 25 micron. There are many options in the market, ranging from 2mil, 5mil all the way to 12mil.
Rarely do film/tint installers discuss this but with this basic know-how, you can now easily understand the features of window tint/films better when choosing the suitable ones based on what you are looking for and afford.
The important words are VLT, IR, TSER, & UV mean something. There are differences, in terminology and may get overwhelming. It would be best to understand before swiping your credit cards.
MONDAY
One of the most delicious feelings in motoring is getting back into a car you’ve loved and realising that it’s as great as you remember. This has just happened in odd circumstances, when Matt Prior and I set out with an Ariel team to test an Atom 4 in the Catesby aerodynamic tunnel (see p40).
We didn’t drive much: just a dozen acceleration runs each way in the 1.7-mile tunnel and a bit of manoeuvring at either end. But it was more than enough to remind me of the wonders of the Atom 3.5 that I owned for four years and to make me add my name to the list of hopeful hacks bidding to borrow a car when the weather improves.
The Steering Committee and I once had a sunny Atom weekend on the Isle of Wight with our luggage squashed into a bag in her footwell. I’m desperate to do it again.
TUESDAY
The fact that our 2021 Alpine A110 will soon need its first MOT test makes me glad the authorities decided not to extend the pre-inspection term for new cars from three years to four. Even a garage queen like our car deserves regular inspection. And it will be nice to renew acquaintance with our much-valued local garage man.
WEDNESDAY
In the local Costa before work, my inbox pings with a fascinating essay from Car Design Research, the Cambridge-based agency that works for a third of the world’s car companies.
Founder Sam Livingstone discusses an elusive phenomenon that I’ve always known but never articulated: just-rightness in car design. It’s fairly easy to find in sports cars and classics, says Livingstone, but more elusive in ordinary cars. He cites the Peugeot 205, Alfa Romeo 156, Volvo V70 and Porsche Macan as examples.
❝
London is depressing. Want to feel better? Stay away
Everyone has a candidate for just-rightness, I suppose. I thought instantly of my first-ever long-termer, a 1979 Citroën Visa Club. I used to study its profile out of my kitchen window; the rear wheel arches and the curve of the pillars between its bonnet and screen were perfect.
I would love to see a Mk1 Visa today, but iron lace disease has killed ’em all.
THURSDAY
It seems to me there’s always a ghoulish exhilaration in the way that Europe’s city leaders introduce curbs on cars (Paris has just trebled its parking charges for heavier ones; London watches with envy). Such announcements always carry a sanctimonious tone, as if
AND ANOTHER THING
Talking of stolen cars, I see the Ford Fiesta maintains its status as Britain’s most-nicked model. I suppose ruthless people who can’t buy a Fiesta (production stopped last June) swipe one instead. Continuing supermini interest must help sales of survivors like Peugeot’s pretty 208 and Renault’s refreshed Clio – as long as a Krooklok goes along for the ride.
they’re doing good and there’s no argument. But I reckon they run a serious risk of deterring people who help keep inner cities healthy.
I’m one: we have a small inner London roost and we make an issue of visiting nearby shops, restaurants, galleries and theatres when we can. I use public transport, and when a car is needed, I try to take a small one. But my bottom line, for the first time in a London life of 40-odd years, is that visiting the capital is depressing. Want to feel better? Stay away. When I say this in copy, many people criticise – but even more agree.
SATURDAY
Interesting reading on Autocar’s website and in the national press that JLR CEO Adrian Mardell wants the government to delay proposed tax cuts so it can spend more on preventing the flow of stolen Range Rovers through ports to nefarious foreign destinations. JLR’s problem is well documented (as is the fact that the company is now doing plenty to prevent it), but I still wonder how the Ford- and Toyota-driving masses would feel about missing a tax perk to help Range Rover owners. Mardell is a money man who never expected to be his company’s principal spokesman. It strikes me that his media team could have given him better advice.

OMODA E5 EV passes two crucial Electric Vehicle Battery Safety Tests
Water Wading
The electric motor is the “heart” of an electric vehicle, and for such vehicles, electrical safety is indeed “true safety.” Recently, OMODA’s first purely electric model, the OMODA E5, undertook two critical electric vehicle battery safety tests: water wading and underbody scraping. It successfully withstood these challenges, demonstrating the vehicle’s reliable safety capabilities.
The water wading test primarily aimed to verify the OMODA E5’s sealed waterproof performance. During the test, the OMODA E5 drove through a pool
with water levels covering the front grille. Due to surging waves, the highest water level reached threequarters of the vehicle’s front face during the testing process. Despite this, the OMODA E5 navigated the entire pool steadily. It successfully passed the test without any signs of water leakage or electrical faults, nor did it trigger any insulation data anomaly alarms.
Underbody Scraping
The underbody scraping test was equally stringent, simulating “accidental” scenarios in real driving conditions where the vehicle encounters
obstacles protruding above the road surface. In this test, the OMODA E5 drove over a 210mm high metal post, posing a significant challenge to the vehicle’s structural strength. After scraping its lowest point, 30mm above the obstacle, the underbody battery pack remained undamaged, and
effectively protected. This demonstrated that even after an underbody scraping incident, the vehicle’s structure could maintain its safety and stability.
Safety has always been the foundational principle of OMODA’s vehicle manufacturing. The
OMODA E5’s satisfactory performance in both the water wading and underbody scraping tests is a testament to OMODA’s utmost pursuit of safety. This not only significantly assures users of their future travel but also showcases how OMODA, through its advancements in safety technology, continues to elevate industry standards.
The Omoda 5 EV’s first public unveiling will be at this year’s MANILA INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW 2024. Catch the Omoda 5, Omoda 5 EV and Jaecoo vehicles at the Omoda and Jaecoo booth at the SMX Convention Center.

TESTER’S NOTE
The M Sport Pro Package adds a sports exhaust, sport brakes, M Sport seatbelts and a glowing grille. At £2400, it’s well worth considering. JW TESTED 29.1.24, WEST SUSSEX ON SALE NOW
Love them or hate them, it’s clear that SUV-coupés are here to stay. And BMW has played a big part in that, as in 2008 it launched what is widely considered to be the world’s first such car. The X6 pioneered sloping rooflines on high hatchbacks and, despite this making it less practical yet also more expensive than the conventional X5, earned enough sales to warrant a second generation – followed in short order by rival cars from Mercedes-Benz, Land Rover, Audi and Porsche.
A third-generation X6 then arrived four years ago, which in such a competitive class means it’s time for a refresh.
Like its X5 sibling, then, the X6 has been given some exterior design changes, including a new front grille, tweaked bumpers and M Sport elements as standard, further emphasising its aggressive look.
Other big changes come inside, with the addition of BMW’s eighthgeneration iDrive system, which comprises a 12.3in digital driver
M Sport spec is standard, so air suspension may be a wise addition
display and a new, curved 14.9in infotainment touchscreen.
Step aboard and it’s hard not to be impressed, with comfortable seats, pixels in every direction and well-integrated, easily accessible buttons and dials for controlling the major functions.
All have an eight-speed automatic gearbox, a four-wheel drive system and 48V mild-hybrid assistance to improve economy and emissions. Here, we are testing the 40i. Its Enhanced powertrains and next-generation interior tech for new-look
powertrain with up to 68 miles of electric-only range, but no such thing is offered here: the X6 uses only big petrol and diesel engines.
(up from 335bhp); and the M60i (née M50i) and M Competition have 4.4-litre twin-turbo petrol V8s with 523bhp and 591bhp.
The X5 offers a plug-in hybrid
The 30d and 40d have 3.0-litre turbo diesel straight sixes with 294bhp (up from 261bhp before) and 335bhp; the 40i has a 3.0-litre turbo petrol straight six with 375bhp
engine propels the 2240kg of kerb weight well, dispatching 0-62mph in 5.4sec, while spitting out a pleasing exhaust note. It can feel slightly laboured at higher revs, though, and it’s not the most economical, returning just 26.5mpg during our week-long test. A diesel would be the more logical option if this is a concern, offering up to 38.7mpg.
Drivers who want a large SUV that can hold its own in the corners should be pleased with the X6. Its handling is far more elegant than its brutish exterior might suggest, and BMW has managed to rein in the body roll even on more challenging roads. Despite measuring 4935mm long by 2004mm wide, the X6 40i is genuinely fun and involving to drive, and such a dynamic character
means you soon forget just how large it really is. The steering does weight up at lower speeds, but makes navigating your way through towns no more difficult.
As for the ride, the X6 is generally composed and compliant; on its optional air suspension, our test car was rarely unsettled. It comes close to feeling excessively firm on slower city streets, however, where larger potholes become more pronounced. This is doubtless not helped by the car’s standard 21in wheels, which also emphasise road noise (wind noise is similarly noticeable at higher speeds).
The X6 inevitably doesn’t give its rear passengers quite as much room as the X5 does, but there is more than in the previous-generation car
Its handling is far more elegant than its brutish exterior design might suggest
and only those over 6ft 2in will be wanting for head room (leg room for taller occupants is fine). The sloping roofline also slashes boot space from the X5’s 650 litres to 580 litres –less than both the Audi Q8 (605) and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé (655).
As has always been the way with the X6, this reduction in practicality prevents a truly rational argument being formed in its favour when it is pricier than the X5. Our £77,535 X6 test car costs around £4000 more than its closest X5 equivalent.
With options – including air suspension, acoustic glass, a panoramic sunroof, the M Sport Pro Package and the Technology Plus Package (featuring advanced driver assistance systems, a premium stereo and Live Cockpit Pro with a head-up display) – its total price shoots up to £94,379. That’s a big bump – the equivalent of a new VW Polo – but brings it in line with rivals such as the entry-level GLE Coupé, which starts at £92,810 and comes with similar equipment.
Ultimately, the X6 is involving to drive (indeed, a little more than its square-backed sibling), it packs
a real punch, it has a pleasing soundtrack and on the whole it’s a very comfortable place to be.
If you love the look of SUVcoupés, the X6 is still a top option. Just bear in mind that a diesel might be the smarter buy.

Louise Barrett not only collects microcars but also plans to drive one around the UK. John Evans meets her and goes for a spin
PHOTOGRAPHY JACK HARRISON
t a Sunday morning car meet recently, I was about to tuck into a bacon sandwich when a small yellow box purred by, doing around 15mph. Turning in to the car park, it came to a stop in front of the assorted Stags, Esprits, Mustangs and other relics drawing the usual crowd. One side of it then opened to reveal the driver, who, unfolding herself into a standing position, effortlessly pushed what I now realised was a three-wheeled microcar backwards to join the other vehicles, where it quickly attracted the curious and amused.
AOnly very small cars can inspire these reactions. Mention Jeremy Clarkson and an elevator and everyone knows you’re talking about a Peel P50, the microcar that the presenter toured BBC Television Centre in. Cue much chortling, followed by general agreement that, in the right conditions, such cars have much to commend them.
Louise Barrett, the owner and driver of the Willam Cyclo that arrived that Sunday, agrees. If you count the Sinclair C5 she also owns, it’s her fourth microcar (there’s a question as to whether, with their 50cc engines and three or four wheels, such vehicles are tricycles or quadricycles, but in Barrett’s case, the DVLA has answered it by registering hers as saloon cars) – and she loves them all. “They’re little adventures on three or four wheels,” says Barrett, whose daily motor is a Fiat 500.
Her microcar adventure began during Covid when, working in A&E in a local hospital, she sadly witnessed the death of a patient.
“It reminded me how short life can be,” says Barrett. “I’ve always been drawn to the peculiar and offbeat [her home is filled with 1960s and 1970s memorabilia] and saw the Willam on eBay. I won it with a bid of £2000. The following day I drove to Essex to collect it.”
No, Barrett didn’t then drive it back to her home in Surrey. For all its charms, the Cyclo – designed by MH Willam, president of Lambretta France, who unveiled it at the 1966 Paris show, and powered by a single-cylinder 47cc Lambretta scooter engine driving the front wheel – is a temperamental creature. Although she has had the Willam refurbished – work that included overhauling the engine and reinforcing the glassfibre body –breakdowns are common and the most spectacular occurred on a drive to the summer car show at Brooklands in 2022.
“Things were going well and then it conked out on the A3 dual carriageway near Ripley,” recalls Barrett. “I pushed it onto the verge just as a fire engine was approaching. The fire crew closed part of the lane and then told me I must abandon it. I refused and instead called out the AA, who discovered a fuel line had become detached. Once it was running, the AA and the fire brigade shadowed me to Brooklands.”
No stranger to the unexpected – when not working as a senior
…but
Flipper interior is microcar-typical for its simplicity
lecturer in paediatric nursing, she is a bingo caller – Barrett admits that driving the Willam requires nerves of steel: “The top speed is less than 20mph and some drivers shout at me and honk their horns. Fortunately, most people seem to love it, and if it runs out of petrol, I can always pedal it.”
Barrett has invited me to her home to try the Willam as well as see her other microcars: a 1974 Mini Comtesse single-seater, which looks similar but has a gullwing door and which she bought from a chap in a pub car park for £500; and a 1970 SEAB Flipper, a four-wheeler whose front axle and drivetrain can turn through 360deg. She bought it for £1200 last October from the estate of a recently deceased collector. But the Willam beckons. Registered in 1976, it is, claims Barrett, the only road-legal Willam Cyclo in the world – which might explain why she was recently

offered £20,000 for it, an offer she declined. I squeeze in behind the steering wheel, pull a knob, press a button and push the accelerator.
Off we go, slowly at first, but we’re soon trundling along at around 15mph. The first thing to notice is how smooth and quiet the engine is and how quickly the car gains speed. The next thing is the directness of the steering and the hilariously small turning circle and the third is how the little car nearly tips me out on a speed hump. “Forgot to mention that,” says Barrett, when I return.
Still, it’s a hoot, and if Barrett’s plans come good, her Cyclo has a great future. “I work for a homeless charity at weekends and plan to drive the Willam around the UK to raise funds,” she says. “Because it’s about the size of a doorway, I’ll be sleeping in it.” I’d like to see Clarkson try that in his P50.

BMW 5 Series
Has the plug-in hybrid sporting executive saloon finally come of age?
MODEL TESTED
550E X DRIVE M SPORT PRO
We like
Sonorous and capable six-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain really does work seamlessly
Has not only the chassis balance you would expect but also superb road manners
Exhibits i7-esque isolation in EV mode but costs much less than BMW’s flagship electric saloon
We don’t like
Tech-heavy cabin has taken a step backwards in both ergonomics and charm
Personality drift into 7 Series territory diminishes the 5 Series’ driving experience
Electric range can suffer dramatically on slower, more congested routes
espite the prosaic remit, the BMW 5 Series has always been championed at Autocar. For one thing, the concept itself hardly lacks breadth. Our preferred executive saloon sets out not simply to convey occupants down motorways in superb comfort, but also to reward its driver on decent roads, to purvey a sense of subtle luxury through both its interior quality and exterior design, and to offer plenty of practicality to boot. Over the decades, the 5 Series has often delivered on all these fronts.
The outgoing car, codenamed G30, was no different. Sheer scope meant it was arguably a greater achievement than any of its forebears. It could nudge 50mpg in no-nonsense 520d guise, or play up to its rich heritage as a blueblooded performance saloon in six-cylinder 540i M Sport form. At the top of the tree, the M5 CS was such an extraordinarily talented family supercar that Ferrari was decidedly lukewarm about the idea of us putting one up against the Purosangue. But no matter the flavour, the G30’s baseline credibility concerning everything from dynamic polish to cabin ergonomics was often class-leading.
So, the eighth-generation car has plenty to live up to. What’s more, the G60 enters a world less fussed with traditional saloons than ever, and one where slipping a big, unhybridised engine under the bonnet isn’t an option. Interior tech is also evolving at a frightening rate, as is the notion among car makers that even discreet saloons should now stand out. Physical size, striking looks, pixel count and low on-paper emissions are today’s priorities.
It all contrives to send the 5 Series into uncharted waters. So, while you might have made up your mind about the styling of the new generation, does the same rich substance – that old 5 Series magic –still reside within? Let’s find out.
DESIGN AND ENGINEERING
With its pinched face and leering grille, the G60 takes inspiration from the iX SUV. This seems a questionable approach for a car many still expect to embody a certain elegance. That said, this isn’t the first time BMW has challenged the status quo. The E39 5 Series killed off BMW’s muchloved shark nose aesthetic and the ‘Bangle’ E60 that succeeded it caused outrage in some circles with its flame surfacing. Like those cars, the G60 is not instantly lovable, though the sloping boot does hark back to the Paul Bracq-penned E12
5 Series, with its neat Italianate aesthetic and superb proportions. On that subject, this is the biggest
5 Series yet. You would expect as much, but the fact that the G60 has more or less the same footprint as the old-shape 7 Series feels notable.

Shorn of its predecessors’ diesel engines, the eighth-generation 5 Series range consists of two plug-in hybrids, two electric i5s and the entry-level 520i mild-hybrid petrol.
There are three de facto trims for UK buyers: M Sport, M Sport Pro (tested here) and M Performance (as represented by the range-topping i5 M60). The last two are distinguished by exterior styling elements (eg an illuminated grille) and gain extra kit.
At 2995mm, the wheelbase has grown 24mm. This elongation of the CLAR platform, along with the 5 Series’ monolithic-looking body, pushes length beyond five metres – until now the preserve of full-size limos. Weight is also up. The entrylevel 520i M Sport tips the scales at 1725kg, versus 1610kg before. The addition of a 48V mild-hybrid set-up accounts for some of the gain.
The flexible CLAR platform has been in service since 2015 but, to accommodate both the electric innards of the new i5 and the plug-in hybrid arrangement in the 5 Series, it has been updated. The mechanical make-up of the 5 Series is otherwise unchanged. Aluminium suspension (wishbones at the front, multiple links at the back) is marshalled by springs and electronically controlled dampers. ICE models use BMW’s trusty ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox, integrated into which is the electric motor that gives the PHEV derivatives extraordinary claimed economy and a good deal of EV driving range. Four-wheel drive is available but now deployed only on the flagship 550e xDrive.
M Sport trim (standard on all 5 Series in the UK except the i5 eDrive40) brings firmer springs and dampers and places the body 8mm closer to the ground. EV and PHEV models, no matter the trim, also get self-levelling air springs at the rear. The 550e comes as standard with Adaptive Suspension Professional, with its adaptive, stroke-dependent dampers and rear-wheel steering. The i5 M60 is the only model that
‘550’ designation historically meant a big V8 up front and unrepentant exhaust outlets at the back. However, for the 550e, exhaust gases from the 3.0 straight six are dealt with in a more clandestine, almost apologetic fashion.
Charge port for the floor-mounted battery sits on the front off-side flank. The latest gen of BMW PHEVs accepts up to 7.4kW, for a full charge in less than 10 hours. Note also that you have to press a button in the cabin to open the fuel filler cap – it’s a sealed system.
Wheel and tyre package is sensible at 20in with 275-section tyres at the back. Don’t expect Pirelli P Zeros, though. The 550e wears comparatively low-friction Michelins, but doesn’t seem to suffer much for that in terms of grip or traction.
You can’t see it here, but the grille is fringed with LED lighting. Elsewhere there’s no doubting this is an M Sport model. The front bumper is quite complex in terms of aero and wants nothing for visual punch.

WHEEL AND PEDAL ALIGNMENT
Pedals are placed and spaced well in a fairly roomy footwell. Manual steering column adjustment is fairly generous.
HEADLIGHTS
BMW’s latest adaptive LED headlights are standard. They are powerful and fairly quick to dip but don’t always respond quite fast enough to avoid dazzling.
can be specified with Adaptive M Suspension Professional, which adds active anti-roll bars.
The engine line-up itself is less varied than it once was, at least for the UK. Diesels are out. Moreover, to have a juicy twin-turbo V8, as the old M550i was furnished with, you will need to opt for the upcoming M5.
So don’t let the nomenclature fool you: the 550e xDrive tested here uses a 308bhp version of the 3.0-litre B58 six-cylinder petrol engine, plus a 194bhp electric motor. Total output is a healthy 483bhp, and electrically operated Vanos camshaft phasing is said to have lowered emissions.
The only other engine is the B48 2.0-litre four-pot petrol, either in 205bhp mild-hybrid 520i guise or 295bhp 530e PHEV form. Of
course, you could also go down the i5 path, though this comes with a considerable premium, especially if you opt for the range-topping M60.
INTERIOR
If you like the interior of the new 7 Series, you will like that of this 5 Series. Of course, the opposite is also true. Whatever your view, it is undeniable that this represents the greatest generational shift for the 5 Series’ cabin since the iDrive system’s debut 23 years ago. Yes, BMW’s slide into the world of touch-sensitive screen-based controls and expansive highresolution displays continues apace here. While the infotainment remains characteristically angled
towards the driver, the only other tangible vestige of the old 5 Series is the rotary iDrive controller on the transmission tunnel, though even this is now rendered for visual impact, being in the style of cut glass, with angular facets if you ticked the box for ‘Crafted Clarity’. Crystalline influence is also found on the convex dashboard. A strip of backlit plastic, which extends along the door cards, is from the 7 Series. On acquaintance it is quite arresting, and its colourconfigurability results in a nice night-time ambience. However, in direct sunlight the smudges from any prodding of controls (for the door locks, air vents and headlights) are unsightly. The commands themselves are also not responsive
enough. Even firing up the hazard lights often requires a second go. BMW is not alone when it comes to this sort of frustration, mind. In terms of digital integration of common controls, thankfully the 5 Series doesn’t go as far as some. Wing mirrors, volume, gear selector – all remain in the realm of things you can twist or push. However, climate controls are almost entirely digital, and while the useful shortcuts that surround the iDrive rotary remain, they are harder to press at a glance. Indeed, all testers found they had to look away from the road more than was desirable. Another observation was that while build quality remains undeniably high in the 5 Series, materials quality isn’t what it was. There is
Multimedia system
We are now onto BMW’s iDrive Operating System 8.5 infotainment generation. Just as it does in the iX and i7, the system incorporates the heater controls, seat adjustment controls, interior lighting controls and many other functions you might expect to find physical switchgear for. BMW tries to provide shortcut functions around the margins of the screen to make it easier to reach particular controls quickly, but they are small and fiddly to hit while driving.
The system’s saving grace for drivers is that there’s still an iDrive-style cursor controller on the centre console. However, there’s no cursor controller on the steering wheel (like Mercedes provides), and going through the main menu screen to find a particular function to adjust can be slow and distracting.
The navigation system is easy to program via voice command and it routes sensibly and is easy to follow. Equally, integration for both Apple
and Android Auto is

too much gloss black, and a few too many uninspiring plastics. Driving ergonomics are good, however. The hip point feels a touch high, but the relationship between ankle, hip and hands is pedigree, with 20mm improved adjustability in the steering column and seat. This is also a vast cabin, at least in the context of a mid-size saloon (which arguably the 5 Series no longer is). Up front, elbow room is 7 Series-esque, and oddment storage excellent, though rear leg room and boot space could better reflect the 5 Series’ dimensions.
PERFORMANCE
Since the designation made its debut in 2005, the presence of ‘550’ on the backside of a petrol 5 Series has always meant one thing: a thumping V8 up front. This, of course, changes for the latest generation, but the loss
of two cylinders hardly portends a shortfall in performance.
A recorded 0-60mph of 4.4sec makes the 550e 0.2sec quicker than the V10-hearted E60-gen M5, and we suspect this is also the first nonM-badged BMW to sprint to 100mph in less than 10sec. Of course, the hottest PHEV 5 Series barely hints at this sort of pace when you first slide aboard. Defaulting into EV mode, it pulls off the mark with barely a ripple, the straight six igniting only once battery charge is depleted, when a serious bout of acceleration is called for, or when you put the gearbox into ‘S’ mode, for snappier upshifts programmed to slot home closer to the 7400rpm redline.
The nature of the performance is familiar – as a non-M model with a torque converter, gearchanges aren’t whip-crack fast, but this ZF unit (now with an upgraded oil pump and improved vibration
damping) continues to ensure there’s no meaningful break in the considerable flow of torque.
The linear B58 motor is as sweet as ever, too. It develops peak torque at 1750rpm, sustaining it until nearly 5000rpm. Does this motor justify the £17k premium the 550e asks over the four-cylinder (and purely RWD) 530e? Rationally, no, but any 550-badged 5 Series has always been more about ‘want’ than ‘need’.
As for the lack of a V8, it is a shame, but the 550e has one trick up its sleeve beyond its ability to unobtrusively slip between electric and combustion propulsion (and, if you so choose, return long-term economy stats of which owners of the old 550i could only have dreamed). In Sport mode, hybrid assistance means tip-in throttle response is outrageous. The 1.9sec taken for the 20-40mph dash in third gear actually beats that of
the M5 CS we tested in 2021. However, gut-punch speed is a quirk of the 550e, not a hallmark. It’s mostly a relaxed, tourer-type personality, capable of wild pace at the drop of a hat but never much encouraging you to overindulge in it, as an M5 does. Happily, the 550e’s Q-car credentials remain intact.
HANDLING AND STABILITY
The 550e cuts an unflustered figure. Given the old-shape car was already impressive in its allround composure, and the new one has a longer wheelbase, wider tracks and, says BMW, even better weight distribution, this is hardly surprising. In 550e guise, the new 5 Series also benefits from rear-wheel steering as part of the standard-fit, 5mm-lowered Adaptive Suspension Professional. This not only shaves half a metre off the turning circle
Track notes
Given the plug-in 5 Series’ mass and the scale of its new-found footprint, it would be tempting to chalk it up as a limousine with better than average handling and a good degree of pedigree feel – much like how we regard the 7 Series. However, when driven to its limits, the G60 5 Series reveals an additional layer of composure and dynamism beyond that of its bigger sibling.
Get the suspension loaded up and this is a five-metre saloon that will tighten its cornering line with a lifted throttle, and one in which the tail can be prompted to neatly arc around, then caught with ease using the accurate steering. This sort of ingrained poise bodes well for the upcoming M5, which will be no smaller than the 550e and, in all likelihood, will be heavier still.
Performance, of course, is more than adequate. Even on the steep Hill Route at Millbrook, this near-500bhp powertrain effectively stripped 500kg from the chassis.
but increases directional stability at higher speeds, when the hubs on both axles turn the same way. When it comes to carrying speed, the 550e is mighty. The grip from its efficiency-minded Michelins is, if not outright superb, then more than good enough. However, it’s the quiet control of the chassis that leaves a lasting impression. Mid-corner crests, crenellations in the road and unexpectedly tight bends elicit pitch and roll, sure, but these are deft movements, neatly cushioned at the variable extremities of the suspension’s travel (Sport mode is tightly controlled but leaves plenty of head room for the M5). Brakepedal feel is also good, instilling confidence. It adds to the intuitive drivability of this 483bhp 5 Series. However, you can’t ever quite escape the feeling you’re driving rather a large car – certainly one more so than before. The 5 Series
Trough after T4 can catch more softly suspended cars out, but the big BMW has vertical control in spades and firmly cushions the body in this compression.
The 550e gets into the tight T2 hairpin reasonably well, but it’s the mid-corner rotation and traction on the way out that leave an impression.
no longer feels ‘right-sized’. In fact, many of the sensory cues during driving – the width of the bonnet, the well-managed but palpable heft of the body, the nicely weighted but manifestly ‘electric’ steering feel –are now more suggestive of 7 Series than 5. The 550e is an accurate, assured and, when pushed, throttleadjustable saloon, but all the chassis tuning in the world can’t disguise such stature.
COMFORT AND ISOLATION
When we road tested the i5, its rolling refinement was hamstrung by a reactive ride. But that was a passively suspended i5 eDrive40, and the 550e xDrive is a different proposition. For a car of its ilk, it provides wonderfully refined company both on the motorway and on more tortuous commuting routes alike, where it slips into EV mode
whenever possible. Its gait is fluid but never sickly in its movements, and the chassis’ isolation of vicious potholes and road-surface corrugations proved a thoroughly pleasant surprise, especially in light of those striking 20in rims.
Noise recordings of 66dBA at 70mph and 62dBA at 50mph are also excellent, and you can deduct 2dBA from each figure when in EV mode. Less beloved by testers were the substantial A- and B-pillars, which inhibit visibility at junctions, and the fact that the bolster adjustment for the Comfort front seats is now accessed only via the touchscreen.
BUYING AND OWNING
The 550e xDrive M Sport starts at £76,605, but the better-equipped £79,605 M Sport Pro offers superior value for money. Neither model is inexpensive, but it’s difficult to
contextualise them as the 550e xDrive is unique – no rival offers a six-pot PHEV saloon. So, while we generally would not bring used cars into the equation, in this case we will point out that low-mileage examples of the old V8-engined, and still very modern-feeling, M550i can be had for less than £50,000. Those who want EV capability and a great engine will still need the 550e. And, in electric matters, the 550e is commendable. On winding roads, our test efficiency of 2.5mpkWh suggests a real-world range of 47 miles. This drops to less than 30 miles in congested urban drudgery. Touring economy is also strong, our test car returning 40.1mpg with the drive battery depleted. With a full tank, and a full battery, you might claw 600 miles. Note also that for this generation of 5 Series PHEV, maximum charging speed has increased to 7.4kW.
TECHNICAL LAYOUT
As far as the PHEVs go, the major change from the G30 to the G60 generation is the relocation of the battery pack from the boot area to underneath the floor of the car. Elsewhere, it’s business as usual: a longitudinal engine natively drives the rear wheels. The electric motor is integrated into the gearbox, which sits just downstream of the engine. On our scales, the car’s weight was distributed 53% front, 47% rear.
Extra cylinders mean the BMW costs more than rivals, but depreciates just a little faster over four years, says CAP.
Undeniably capable and a fine plug-in hybrid sports saloon
hether the G60 5 Series has heightened or diminished the appeal of this storied model line will depend on your criteria for an exec saloon. On one hand, the 550e xDrive, tested here on the most capable suspension offered for the new 5 Series, has limousine qualities in abundance. We found it to be quieter even than an E-Class, and it rides with an unexpected grace that becomes even more remarkable as you discover just how composed this chassis remains when fired down a tricky B-road with almost 500bhp.
WHowever, a little of the ‘Goldilocks’ magic of the 5 Series has been lost along the way. The dimensions have increased – palpably so from the driver’s seat – and yet cabin ergonomics don’t take full advantage of this development. A slight over-reliance on touch-sensitive tech and some questionable materials also undermine the warmth and intuitiveness of the cabin. Overall, the 5 Series can feel a touch synthetic and more coldly capable than before.
All of that said, with its fine pure-EV attributes, this plug-in hybrid is still immensely versatile, with company car drivers getting a particularly sweet deal. But as a concept, the 5 Series is now less neatly defined than before, and less lovable for it.
RICHARD
LANE
One reason the 550e is so savage when it comes to roll-on acceleration in second and third gear could be to do with BMW’s patented pretransmission ratio, which multiplies torque from 184lb ft to an effective 332lb ft, negating the need for a bigger motor. It really pins you back.
MATT
SAUNDERS
BMW’s PHEV-specific, stroke-dependent new damper control makes a difference. This is the best-riding 5 Series I’ve experienced, and it sets a new class benchmark.
Our test car came with £20k of options, but you needn’t spend quite that much. At £3300, the Technology Plus Pack feels surplus to requirements. The Comfort Plus Pack is more worthwhile, as is the B&W sound system.
Continue to improve the electric driving range – 50 miles in all real-world conditions would be stellar.
Rethink some of the interior switchgear, which could be easier to use.
For the 550e, think about offering a different tyre that generates better steering feel.

PHLOX2024: CONQUERING THE UNCHARTED WITH A SPIRIT OF CAMARADERIE
Last February 21, 2024, 14 competitor teams from all over the Philippines immediately battled it out on Day 1 of the Petron Philippine Overland Expedition 2024 (PHLOX), each tasked to complete four (4) timed stages designed to test their technical driving and recovery skills. After a brief respite in the afternoon, three (3) timed segments made from natural tracks were staged the following day, Feb. 22 in Submarine Bay, Masanga Point in General Nakar, Quezon. After completing the Day 2 stages, competitors were given the go signal
(and 40 hours) to cross the jungles of General Nakar from Masanga Point to Dingalan, Aurora, approximately 50 kilometers away.
The first team to complete the challenge was Team Siga 4×4 from Nueva Ecija, followed by Team Ironman Pampanga, with the Binangonan Eagles Off-road Team as the third to complete the jungle crossing. Throughout the whole day of February 23, and just before dawn of the 24th, competitor teams slowly emerged from the jungle oneby-one enroute to the campsite/checkpoint. Unfortunately, four teams failed to complete the crossing on time due
to critical damages to some of their vehicles.
The final three (3) timed stages were then conducted in Dingalan, Aurora on February 24; this time along the riverbed beside the campsite during the last day of the competition.
In the end, it was just a difference of 12 points that separated the winning team from the second placer. Bringing home the honors as PHLOX 2024 Champions along with P500,000 in cash prize, Team MYTTires x FredGarage x GibaPH (119) rose victorious, led by drivers Jassoren Flores, Kap. Jess Mendoza, and Niko
Soria, and ably assisted by co-drivers Carl Sabariaga, Joel Reyes, Fred Garcia, and support crew Jayson Mendoza. Finishing 2nd with a total score of 958 points was Team Ironman Pampanga who received P200,000 in cash prize, and Team Siga 4×4 from Nueva Ecija in 3rd with a total score of 852 points, receiving P100,000 in cash prize.
In the end, though the jungles of General Nakar did live up to its reputation as one of the most difficult trails in the country, it was the reputation of the Filipino off-roader whose unofficial motto of “walang iwanan” was what prevailed, as the spirit of friendship and camaraderie saw several competitors going the extra mile not just for their team mates but for their fellow competitors as well.
Most notable was Jassoren “Sonjay” Flores of Team 119 who, after completing the crossing, went back to the dreaded mud pit thrice to help other competitor teams cross going to the checkpoint/campsite. Another notable mention was Team GenSan x CDO who, because of a logistical dilemma, decided to return to General Nakar via the reverse route, and by doing so, helped rescue and recover another participant vehicle they encountered on their
way back.
As the dust settled, and the winners declared, PHLOX 2024 was a triumph for the Filipino off-road racing community.
The Petron Philippine Overland Expedition is co-organized by Mototesto Overland
Equipment and All Traction Performance, made possible with the support of Petron Corporation, in association with Motolite, and technical partner Gears Banawe, the local distributor of ARB 4×4 Accessories, Bushranger, Second Air.

2024 MSCC MAZDA MIATA SPEC SERIES SEASON STARTS MAY 25
The 2024 season of the MSCC Mazda Miata Spec Series starts on May 25. Organized jointly by Mazda Philippines and the Manila Sports Car Club (MSCC), the MSCC Miata Spec Series is the country’s only one-make sportscar racing series.
As a racing platform, the MX-5 needs little introduction as it is the most raced car in the world. It has proven to be both fast and reliable,
winning four-, eight-, and 12-hour endurance races no less than five times in the Philippines. In the past two seasons of the MSCC Miata Spec Series, there have been no mechanical breakdowns. Driven properly, the MX-5 Spec Series race car will go through an entire season only requiring consumables such as brake rotors and discs, and filters.
Inspired by the largest one-make grassroots race series in the world,
the Mazda Spec Miata, the MSCC Miata Spec Series cars are all built from showroom standard Mazda MX-5 Soft Top units. The race cars feature the stock Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter and 6-speed Skyactiv-Drive manual transmission.
“What sets the MX-5 Spec Series cars apart from the others is that it remains road legal. It comes with a license plate, and with the climate control and infotainment system
intact, it is not just good for the track, but for the road as well,” shares Steven Tan, President and CEO of Mazda Philippines.
For the MSCC Miata Spec Series, the MX-5 has been developed further to ensure safe, fun, and exciting racing. The sportscar’s platform has been made stiffer with the use of a Mazdaspeed upper stress bar and front lower arm power brace. Each suspension component
has been upgraded too with CUSCO Sport S 24-way adjustable coil overs and sway bars (24 mm at the front, 14 mm at the rear) to maximize handling and performance on the track, while ensuring drivability on the road. All MX-5 Spec Series cars race with GT Radial Champiro SX2 tires mounted on custom 17 x 8.0 J Rota Strike wheels. Repeated hard braking on the circuit also meant upgrading the brakes
using Autoexe stainless steel braided hose lines and Winmax brake pads.
A custom stainless steel exhaust system, developed by local company Drift Xaust, maximizes air flow and enhances the racing note emanating from the MX-5’s 181-horsepower engine. A Sparco R345 competition steering wheel, Grid-Q racing seat, and four-point harness, as well as CUSCO 6-point roll cage and safety net are installed to secure the drivers’ control and safety on and off the track.
Due to popular demand, the grid is expanding with a handful of MX-5 Spec Series race cars being made available to the public for the first time since the series’
inception in 2022.
“The MSCC Miata Spec Series draws people of various skill levels, and this has proven to be one of the main reasons for its continued success,” says Tan.
Being a grassroots sportscar racing series, the MSCC Miata Spec Series only has two requirements: owning a MX-5 Spec Series race car and membership to
the Manila Sports Car Club. Since the MX-5 Spec Series race car is a recognized sportscar by the MSCC, all the racer needs is an endorsement letter from a current MSCC member.
For P 2,830,000, the MX-5 Spec Series race car comes inclusive with all related track fees for the entire four-round, eight-race season. Each weekend, racers also
receive 65 liters of Shell V-Power Racing, Shell Helix Ultra engine oil, and a set of new GT Radial Champiro SX2 tires.
Like 2023, the MSCC Miata Spec Series will race at two venues this year: the Clark International Speedway (CIS) and the Batangas Racing Circuit (BRC) in an alternating manner. All races this year will be held on Saturdays, with
the first round kicking off on May 25 at the BRC, followed the second round on July 13 at the CIS, the third round on September 25 at the BRC, and finally, the fourth round on November 16 at the CIS.
