he FIA announced a new set of technical regulations for an accessible, entry-level touring car class based on e isting rally regulations.
TThe new category, labelled TC Lite, will comprise of two subclasses, TCL and TCL5, utili ing e isting Rally and Rally5 regulations and therefore providing competitors with one car suitable for both rallying and circuit racing competitions.
This would be possible through an additional appendi that will enable Rally and Rally5 class cars to be used in circuit racing with only minimal modifications while leaving the rally homologation unchanged. TC Lite will therefore form the basis of the FIA touring car pyramid, with the well-established TCR class, developed by the SC roup, above it.
According to the FIA adaptations will be kept to a minimum so that the class remains cost-effective and the competitors are provided with a level playing field. The ob ective is to have the cars suitable for different motor sport competitions without the need for costly and time-consuming conversions between the cars’ rally and circuit specifications.
The minimum weight set out in the regulations will be ad usted to compensate for the removal of spare wheels, tools and handheld fire e tinguishers, which are not required for circuit racing, while the addition of FIA-homologated racing nets will be mandatory. The cars will also use full-slick racing tires.
TC Lite will be comprised of two classes TCL5 class will be for the most accessible, entry-level cars with a powerto-weight ratio of around . kg bhp, while TCL cars will offer a step up in terms of performance, with appro imately 5. kg bhp. The cars of both TC Lite classes are fitted with sequential gearbo es.
The TCL5 sub-class will also accommodate Rally5-kit cars,
empowering National Sporting Authorities to approve cars prepared and homologated by local tuners for national competitions. This will broaden the market and create space for local car manufacturers to promote certain models of cars offered in their respective domestic markets.
The TC Lite concept was presented to the FIA orld Motor Sport Council members and representatives of FIA Member Clubs from around the world during the FIA Conference held in Samarkand, bekistan.
“This category is a very good push for us to bring more people to motor sport at a low cost,” said Fabiana Ecclestone, FIA’s Vice President for Sport for South America. “For me as a woman, it’s also very important because we give an affordable possibility for women to engage in our sport. e have to make it affordable, so combining two cars of different categories as the same product is a dream,” she added.
“In North America, there is a lot of touring car racing, so this new development gives us the opportunity to better structure our touring car championships. Rally , Rally5 and Rally5-kit are what we need in most countries in the region,” stated Daniel Coen, FIA Vice President for Sport for North America and President of
Autom vil Club de Costa Rica.
Europe’s FIA Vice President for Sport, Manuel Avi , spoke about the inclusion of the Rally5-kit within the new touring car concept. “It’s good to have the Rally5kit regulations within TC Lite. It’s a good way to get an FIA homologation without having the manufacturer getting directly involved. ou can do it through your own technical team within the ASN. This is the way to have more options in the grassroots categories.” he concluded.
“Being able to easily homologate a car is the best we can offer to the ASNs,” agreed Rodrigo Rocha, Africa’s FIA Vice President for Sport and President of Automovel e Touring Clube de Mocambique. “The easy transition between circuit racing and rallying is something that reduces the cost. I find the new TC Lite concept to be innovative,” he summari ed.
“For ASNs, and particularly for emerging ASNs, finding the right balance between affordability and safety is always a challenge. The TC Lite concept is an affordable, common platform, so for us as an ASN that is trying to build its national framework for motor sport, it is a really good concept to look at,” said Michael Smith, Director of Sporting & Technical at Saudi Automobile & Motorcycle Federation.
“China is a promising and quickly developing market and TC Lite will lower the barrier for customers to get involved and put themselves into a seat of a race car,” said FIA Touring Car Commission member and representative of the Chinese Touring Car Championship promoter, Cao Shan, who is also part of the FIA’s TC Lite orking roup.
The appendi to the regulations is set for validation by the FIA orld Motor Sport Council later this year, paving the way for TCL and TCL5 cars to be used in competitions from the start of the 5 season says the FIA.

FRESH OUT THE BOX
Final Quarter Entrants
The last quarter of the year is probably the busiest month for the local automotive industry. Aside from new model launches, this year marks the 9th edition of the Philippine International Motor Show which coincides with the 2024 Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit, which directly translates to a whole lot of new car models to be launched, previewed, and teased during these two events.
Before going into the two major events in the local motoring beat, let us take a closer look at the new models to be released in the Philippine market. Most of which come from the Japanese threediamond brand. JOHN REY SAN DIEGO
BMW XM Label Red
THE ONLY non-Mitsubishi on this FOTB edition, is the BMW XM Label Red. Now made available in the country is the most powerful BMW M model ever. SMC Asia Car Distributors Corp. officially launched the limited-edition BMW crossover SUV. With only 500 samples worldwide, the XM Label Red stands out by seamlessly merging the M HYBRID system’s electrified performance together with the unique design cues that takes the dynamic design and character of a BMW X model to a whole new level.
The BMW XM Label Red is powered by a potent V8 mill that comes assisted with an electric motor. Together, the XM Label Red is rated at 748hp, or 95hp more than the standard XM. Torque figures are quite impressive at 1,000 Nm which translate to thrilling acceleration pulls. The upgraded V8 engine, featuring cutting-edge M TwinPower Turbo technology, is rated at 585 hp and 750 Nm of torque, creating a perfect harmony with the electric motor’s instant power delivery. Handling performance is also worthy of the M badge courtesy of its M xDrive drivetrain and precision-tuned chassis.
Mitsubishi Mirage G4 Black Series
MITSUBISHI Motor Philippines Corp. is making its subcompact sedan bet even more appealing with a limited release model. Meet the new Mitsubishi Mirage G4 Black Series.
Striking exterior updates made to the Mirage G4 is its new White Solid exterior that highlights its blacked out accents. The White Solid finish perfectly contrasted the black paint side door mirrors and stunning 15-inch black paint alloy wheels, giving off a captivating and commanding vibe on the road. This unit retains the model’s signature headlamps and dynamic shield fascia, with the front grille now bearing eye-catching red lines, completing its sporty appearance.
Stepping inside of the limited edition Mirage G4, it is worth noting the exclusive bits the Black Edition received. An aluminum finished scuff plate can be found by its door opening. Also, an armrest console comes standard in the limited Mirage G4 Black Series. Better cabin illumination has made its way to the Mirage G4 Black Series thanks to its center console and floor illumination features.
Mitsubishi Montero Sport Black Series RALLIART
TWO OUT of the three Mitsubishi models on this list is the Mitsubishi Montero Sport Black Series RALLIART. The Montero Black Series special variant received an even more special RALLIART treatment with not-so-subtle exterior updates.
Standing out from the rest of the Montero Sport is its White Diamond finish topped with Black Roof. Highlighting its mouthful nameplate are the RALLIART-inspired side decals which screams the brand’s rally pedigree. Exterior updates are furthered with black front and rear under garnishes with red accents. The Montero Sport Black Series RALLIART pushes its rally car vibes with its red mud flaps which not only adds style but function as well. Black wheel arch moldings tops the blacked out exterior accents. Inside, a set of RALLIART floor mats awaits you, completing the overall RALLIART vibes of the new and exclusive Montero Sport Black Series variant.
Mitsubishi Xpander Cross Outdoor Edition
THE XPANDER CROSS aims to blur the line between MPVs and SUVs. Adding a sportier flare to this vibe, Mitsubishi Motor Philippines Corp. launched a limited edition model of its sporty 7-seater MPV, the Mitsubishi Xpander Cross Outdoor Edition.
Comes with an exclusive Green Bronze Metallic color, the new Xpander Cross Outdoor Edition comes equipped with exclusive updates such as its sporty tailgate spoiler and garnish, rear bumper guard, and new mudguards.
More than just updates to the vehicle itself, the Xpander Cross Outdoor Edition also comes complete with a set of Ogawa camping gear which makes the limited edition model live up to its nameplate, allowing its passengers to be equipped for any outdoor adventure.
ToyotaPH showcases Next-Gen Tamaraw, Hydrogen-Powered Concept at Malacañang
Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP) recently went to the Malacañang Palace to showcase its upcoming Next Generation Tamaraw and a hydrogen-powered concept vehicle to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. This event underscores TMP’s commitment to bolstering local automotive manufacturing, advancing sustainable mobility solutions, and fostering economic growth.
President Marcos expressed his gratitude for Toyota’s sustained investment in the Philippines, particularly highlighting TMP’s recent PHP 5.5 billion investment in producing the Philippinemade Next Generation Tamaraw, also known regionally as the Toyota Innovative International Multi-Purpose Vehicle (IMV) 0 (Zero). This investment encompasses vehicle production, localization of parts, and the establishment of a new in-house vehicle conversion capability, thereby reinforcing TMP’s
role in supporting the viability of the automotive and parts manufacturing industries in the country. The versatile Tamaraw aims to enable “Mobility for All” through its easily convertible design.
During a courtesy call at the Palace, TMP officials displayed prototype conversion units of the Tamaraw, showcasing its adaptability to the needs of Filipinos. Returning as a light commercial vehicle, TMP aims to transform this iconic model into the next ‘national car’ by catering to the specialized conversion needs of various Micro, Small, and Medium
Enterprises (MSMEs) and individuals.
In a significant gesture, TMP presented President Marcos with a letter of intent for its planned donation of five Tamaraw units, which will be converted into ambulances and turned over to the government in 2025. These vehicles will support various mobility needs under the “Lab For All” health program spearheaded by First Lady Louise AranetaMarcos.
Reinforcing its commitment to global carbon neutrality, TMP introduced its “Beyond Zero” movement to the government. This
initiative aligns with the Philippine government’s push for a clean energy transition and supports key national policies related to the transportation sector, including the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA) and the Philippine Energy Plan.
As part of its multipathway approach to decarbonization, TMP also presented the Corolla Cross H2 Concept, developed by Toyota GAZOO Racing (TGR) in Japan. This Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine Vehicle (HICEV) utilizes hydrogen gas sourced from a local producer and is filled through a Hydrogen Refueling Station (HRS) imported from Malaysia.
“For Toyota, we aim to provide the most suitable vehicle technology aligned with the country’s energy strategy. By embracing multi-pathway approaches to energy, Toyota offers a diverse range of powertrains, both available and in development,” said Masahiko Maeda, Chief
Executive Officer of Toyota Asia Region.
Acknowledging the Philippines’ rich resources, TMP highlighted the potential of diversifying energy sources to develop related industries and complement the decarbonization goals across various sectors, including transportation. With its extensive range of xEV powertrain technologies, Toyota believes hydrogen can emerge as a leading advanced alternative energy source, with the potential for zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
Beyond its commitment to decarbonizing the vehicle life cycle—from raw materials sourcing and manufacturing to distribution and recycling— TMP is also exploring sustainable mobility solutions through xEV user services and leveraging data solutions and connected technologies to enhance travel and logistics efficiency, ultimately resulting in CO2 reduction.

Hyundai hits major milestone with 100 million vehicles produced
Hyundai Motor Company celebrated a significant milestone today, marking 100 million units of global cumulative production. This achievement was accomplished in just 57 years since the company’s foundation, making it one of the fastest in the global automotive industry. In honor of this milestone, Hyundai Motor held a ceremony at its Ulsan Plant in Korea.
As a token of gratitude for the unwavering support and trust of its customers, the company delivered its 100 millionth and first vehicle, an IONIQ 5, directly to a customer. The vehicle rolled off the final inspection conveyor belt at Ulsan Plant’s shipping center during a special handover ceremony. The event also featured a celebratory display commemorating ‘100 million and 1’, symbolizing Hyundai
Motor’s commitment to pushing one step further with its past accomplishments as the foundation.
“Reaching global cumulative production of 100 million vehicles is a meaningful milestone that was possible thanks to our customers around the world who have chosen and supported Hyundai Motor since the very beginning,” said Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company. “Taking on bold challenges and being in constant pursuit of innovation has enabled us to achieve rapid growth and will empower us to take ‘one step further’ toward another 100 million units as a mobility game changer.”
The Ulsan Plant, which began operations in 1968, holds significant historical importance as the ‘birthplace of the development of the Korean automobile industry.’
Notably, the plant produced Korea’s first mass-produced independent model, the Pony, in 1975. Currently, the Ulsan Plant is a central hub for electrification, and the company is establishing a dedicated electric vehicle (EV) facility at the site.
“Each and every employee at Hyundai Motor has contributed to the accumulation of 100 million units through their hard work and dedication,” said Dong Seock Lee, President and Head of Domestic Productions
at Hyundai Motor Company.
“This auspicious occasion is just the first step toward the future era of electrification that Hyundai Motor will lead.”
This historic achievement follows Hyundai Motor’s continuous growth, fueled by the launch of the premium brand Genesis, the highperformance brand N, and the introduction of EVs such as the IONIQ 5 based on the dedicated electric global modular platform (E-GMP).
The company’s global footprint has expanded with
production facilities in Turkey, India, the U.S., and the Czech Republic, contributing to record achievements including surpassing 50 million vehicles manufactured in 2013.
Last year, Hyundai Motor built on this momentum by establishing the Hyundai Motor Group Global Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS), a new concept of a smart urban mobility hub. The innovative manufacturing platforms and advanced technologies developed there, including artificial intelligence (AI), robots, and smart factories, are set to be introduced to future production factories, such as Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA), maximizing production efficiency. The company continues to innovate and expand, building on its success and commitment to excellence.

Mark Zuckerberg crafts a Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT Minivan for his wife
Priscilla wanted a minivan, so I’ve been designing something I’m pretty sure should exist: a Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT Minivan,” explain Zuckerberg. “Threw in a manual GT3 Touring to make it his and hers.”
Zuckerberg has pushed the boundaries of automotive design with the unveiling of his one-off Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT minivan—a brilliant fusion of highoctane performance and family-friendly practicality. This bespoke ride emerged from his desire to craft the ultimate family vehicle for his wife, Priscilla Chan, while indulging his passion for speed and luxury.
Based on the formidable Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT, this unique creation features several
custom modifications to enhance passenger capacity. The standout change? An extended body, lengthened by about three to four feet between the B- and
C-pillars. This clever design accommodates three rows of seating for six or seven passengers, all while preserving the sleek silhouette Porsche is renowned for. The
exterior flaunts a striking, glossy Arctic Grey finish, and the addition of electric sliding doors ensures easy access for everyone.
Zuckerberg’s vision
seamlessly marries family convenience with Porsche’s performance pedigree. While specific performance figures for this bespoke minivan are under wraps, the standard Cayenne Turbo GT boasts a roaring 650-horsepower twinturbo V8, delivering 626 lb-ft of torque. In other words, even as a minivan, this beast promises a driving experience that’s anything but ordinary.
This custom creation echoes Porsche’s 2019 Vision Renndienst concept, which pushed the boundaries of what a minivan could be with its focus on speed and versatility. While the Renndienst remained a dream, Zuckerberg’s masterpiece bridges the gap between practicality and high performance, redefining what a family vehicle can truly be.

WHAT AN ORIGINAL DELOREAN IS LIKE TO DRIVE
Sitting in its low, pillowy seats, the original DeLorean is a feast of plastics, leather and what went for ‘future’ tech in the latter half of the 20th century. It isn’t a sharp handler, being soft and spongy, and its three-speed automatic (a fivespeed manual was also available) doesn’t seem to enjoy being a gearbox. The PRV V6’s 130bhp isn’t really enough to bother the ’box anyway, but it is fun and grabs attention everywhere it goes.
The moment you raise its doors to reveal its all-grey interior, your inner child screams with delight. Being so low and so wide, combined with the incredible Giorgetto Giugiaro-designed exterior, it makes you feel like you’re boarding a spaceship. Wobbly springs and wheezy engine be damned: you can’t help feeling special in a DeLorean. And that’s before other people see it.
HOW ABOUT A 1929 ROLLS PHANTOM?
The DeLorean is just one example of Electrogenic’s bespoke prowess. In 2023, the team unveiled an incredible one-off created in collaboration with Aquaman actor Jason Momoa – a 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom II. Now powered by a 201bhp, 228lb ft electric motor (in place of a 40-ish-horsepower 7.7-litre six-pot), its 93kWh battery pack is partly hidden under the bonnet and clad with intricate metalwork. Of course, ripping out the motor made a lot of other things stop working, which meant Electrogenic had to get its hands very mucky to make it all work as it should. Momoa, thankfully, loves his new wheels.

THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW
Colin McRae raced a Prodriverun Ferrari at Le Mans
The legendary 1995 WRC champion for Subaru joined colleagues Darren Turner and Rickard Rydell to race a Prodrivebuilt Ferrari 550M at Le Mans in 2004. He adapted brilliantly to the new discipline and the team finished third in the GT class and ninth overall.
but insists he never had fixed goals. The priority, he reckoned, was to react quickly to opportunities. These days he is passionate about doing business ethically. “Things go full circle in life,” he says. “If you do your best and try to treat people correctly, they usually remember.”
Its WRC success gave Subaru a brighter future
cocktail bar to be mounted in the rear console of the Range Rover SV Autobiography, and even though it was an extremely expensive option, more than 7000 were built.
The Impreza was banned until the Legacy won Prodrive’s rally experts knew Subaru’s smaller, more agile Impreza would do far better in rallies than the Legacy family fourdoor, but Subaru bosses insisted that the Legacy should be first to score a WRC win. McRae did the business in New Zealand in 1993 and the Impreza arrived the following year.
It invented helicopterborne rally crews
Helicopter support is common in the WRC today, and Prodrive was the pioneer. Daunted by the sheer manpower of rivals, Richards, who had already learned to fly, decided to get two helicopters and drop small crews at every stage halt. It worked so well that every other team had to follow suit.
Its early recipe for progress was having no fixed plan Richards may have displayed an early instinct for business,
According to Richards, when their cars started winning rallies, the pride and self-respect of Subaru employees changed “almost overnight”. The journey of the brand from obscurity to world renown is the subject of a Henley Business School study. In particular, Subaru Japan found it far easier to recruit technical talent than before.
It made two false Formula 1 starts Prodrive made two attempts at launching an own-brand F1 team (Richards did have two short stints as team boss at BAR and Benetton). One was a 2006 McLaren ‘customer team’ that fell foul of the F1 constructors’ Concorde Agreement, the other a 2008 Aston Martin entry that failed to get FIA approval because of its Mercedes-Benz engine.
Range Rover cocktail cabinets are its speciality Prodrive set up a small production line to build an ultraluxurious, electrically opening
Its classic racers have made their buyers richer Some Banbury-built rally and race cars have gained enormously in price. Ex-McRae Subaru Imprezas now sell for £1 million, Aston Martin racers with provenance attract bids close to £5m and the Banbury Ferrari 550Ms, of which just 11 were made, sell for close to £7m.
It built an amphibious Jeep For a while, Richards was keen to build a Prodrive amphibious 4x4. He built a prototype based on a Jeep Wrangler and tested it extensively near St Mawes, Cornwall, where he has property. Sadly, accelerating work on the Dakar Rally cars, the Imprezainspired Subaru P25 road car and the Aston Martin line-up has led to the project being shelved.
Richards nearly joined the Royal Air Force instead Prodrive might never have happened. At 17, Richards learned to fly and had an opportunity to take his skills much further as an RAF recruit. He instead chose to train as an accountant, completing his articles at 22 and then, after success in motorsport, deciding to pursue a business career.
Hyundai Ioniq 5
Is this self-styled corner rascal’ the driver’s EV we’ve been waiting for N MODEL TESTED
We like
The Ioniq 5 N is hardly small yet handles with a free-flowing ease that belies its weight and invites drivers of all skill levels to get stuck in and have some fun
Simulated gearshifts sound like a questionable idea but Hyundai has programmed them so intuitively that at times you forget you’re driving an EV
It’s sensibly priced and has the practicality of the regular Ioniq 5, which is to say plenty
We don’t like
Body control is good but there’s something a touch rudimentary about the damping
Touring efficiency isn’t great, though perhaps this is inevitable given the big contact patch

1-spd reduction gear
With the arrival of the red-hot N, the Ioniq 5 range has the kind of breadth you would traditionally associate with German saloons. Trim levels range from Advance through Premium, N Line, Ultimate and N Line S before you get to the well-equipped N.
Charge port is on the rear, driver’s side corner of the car. As standard, the Ioniq 5 N is equipped with vehicle-toload technology, meaning the car can charge 230V electrical equipment, as well as charging at up to 239kW itself.
The Ioniq 5 N uses 275-section tyres and forged 21in rims at both ends. A smaller wheel and tyre package at the front might have yielded a more delicate poise in the corners, though the ability to switch the front and rear tyres around could come in handy regarding wear.
Rear overhang is 55mm longer than the non-N car’s owing to its diffuser. The chequered detailing is also N-specific. The standard Ioniq 5 gets horizontal stripes that aren’t so vivid, and are set within matt, not gloss, bodywork.
i30 N helped to cast Hyundai in a new light
New bumper design is more openworked than for the regular Ioniq 5 but uses the same active air flaps that can prioritise cooling or aero efficiency. The red pinstripe is an ’80s-style touch, to go with the car’s Giugiaro-esque silhouette.
Weights and measures
DIMENSIONS
PARKING
WHEEL AND PEDAL ALIGNMENT
Pedals are centrally positioned in a way that allows for left-foot braking, should you wish. We have no qualms with this arrangement, though more steering-column reach would be nice.
HEADLIGHTS
The Ioniq 5 N uses dualprojector-beam LEDs to go with its striking parametric pixel-graphic LEDs. They weren’t tested on this occasion owing to summer test conditions.
Second-row passenger space is excellent, even if the seats aren’t quite as cosseting and supportive as we would like in a car with such epic performance.
Boot floor is high-set on account of the small, cable-holding cubby beneath it and the bulk on the rear-axle drive unit beneath that. It’s still a sizeable space, mind.
Multimedia system
The Ioniq 5 N uses the regular car’s 12.3in central touchscreen. It’s paired with another 12.3in screen that functions as an instrument display. The standard car’s useful smattering of physical switchgear is also present, and makes changing the volume and adjusting the climate controls hassle-free. There is, however, no doubt that the touchscreen display itself is a little too far from the driver for comfort, and prodding icons required more of a reach than any of our testers would have liked.
The Ioniq 5 N’s brace of large displays do provide a mountain of information, mind – including tyre pressures, temperature of each motor and the battery, g-force, plus brake and throttle utilisation. You will find the settings for the N’s various dynamic toys too (see Track Notes, p51). The use of a big central speedo – or yellow rev counter, if you so choose – also adds a touch of flair to proceedings. When you are not using the native system, Android

PERFORMANCE
HANDLING
Complicated software, synthesised gears and 2235kg hardly scream ‘fun driver’s car’ but, configured just so, the Ioniq 5 N is as playful and benign as billed in the corners.
Track notes
Hyundai says the Ioniq 5 N is not really about lap times, but it still makes plenty of provision for those who want to explore the car’s full capability on a circuit. N Race mode can limit peak power to maximise range for longer stints, and there’s a similar mode for the battery. Both features helped the car set a sub-8min Nordschleife lap without overheating –still not something that many super-EVs can manage.
The dry handling circuit at MIRA was our chance to explore the Ioniq 5 N’s true limit handling, and the car didn’t disappoint. The Ioniq 5 N has an N Drift Optimiser function that helps you hold slides, and even a torque-kick function to easily instigate them, but we wouldn’t bother with either. Turn the ESC all the way off and the Ioniq 5 N will hold slides like a BMW M car, and even in higher-speed corners will rotate on a trailing brake then pivot joyfully, with World Rally Championship-esque alacrity, into big yaw angles with delicious ease.
The only thing to note is tyre wear. The Ioniq 5 N may have reinforced axles and steering-column mounting points, but rubber is harder to beef up. Too much fun and you will overheat – even delaminate – the rears with surprising ease. Come with spares, behave yourself, or wait for some precipitation.
More broadly, Hyundai is using real motorsport to underscore the credentials of its fastest EV to date.
Last year, a drift-spec version of the Ioniq 5 N slithered up the hill at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and in June this year a transmogrified version of the road car competed in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Time Attack specification (pictured). The driveline hardware was the same as that used for the road car, albeit governed by PP-specific software. Motorsport is hardly a novelty to Hyundai, of course. The firm has 29 WRC wins to its name, and in 2019 and 2020 won the manufacturers’ championship with the i20 WRC.

TECHNICAL LAYOUT
Hyundai’s determination to keep the cost of its supercar-baiting EV sensible means that the E-GMP platform is largely unchanged from other applications, save for some strengthening. On each axle sits a permanent magnet synchronous motor, the rear’s being more powerful and working through an electronically controlled limitedslip diff. Suspension is by steel springs. Weight was distributed 50:50 on our scales.
RESIDUALS
Forecasts show the Ioniq 5 N ought to do well in residual terms versus a petrol competitor. Macan remains unrivalled.
A little big and heavy, but compelling like no other EV to date
Cars that truly change the game are vanishingly rare, even in the topsy-turvy era the automotive industry is currently weathering. Yet the Ioniq 5 N is just that: a gamechanger. Reading about this hot hatch-cum-super-saloon on paper, it is perhaps difficult to imagine that all its tricks and innovations wouldn’t feel a touch gimmicky. Certainly, you wonder whether the established German performance brands simply take themselves too seriously to explore, for example, synthesised gearshifts, or throttle-adjustability that at times can seem almost cartoonishly easy to generate. And perhaps that is their loss. The first N-badged EV from the South Korean marque with the Nürburgring test base and the nous to occasionally test its prototypes on British roads, 5000 miles from home, is blindingly good fun and capable of rising to any occasion in dynamic terms. It’s a heavy beast, and complicated in software terms, but a swift and natural-feeling companion, and has clearly been conceived with the aim of entertaining, rather than mindlessly impressing with vast grip and accelerative clout. The electric driver’s car has landed, and it will slot into most of our lives with ease – and plenty of smiles.

VINFAST OFFERS FLEXIBLE EV OWNERSHIP OPTIONS IN THE PHILIPPINES WITH THE NEW VF 5 SUV
Words By Anjo Perez
inFast, the Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is making its mark in the Philippines with its new compact electric SUV, the VF 5. Breaking away from traditional car ownership, VinFast introduces a unique choice for buyers: they can either purchase the VF 5 with the battery included or subscribe to a separate battery plan. This approach allows customers to select the payment option that best aligns with their lifestyle and budget, offering a new level of flexibility in EV ownership.
Traditionally, purchasing a car meant covering the entire vehicle cost, including all major components. With VinFast’s battery subscription model, however, drivers can now reduce their initial cost by subscribing to the battery separately. Those who want full ownership can buy the VF 5 with the battery included for P1,191,000. Alternatively, they can opt for the subscription model, which lowers the vehicle’s price to P992,000— nearly a 16% reduction from the all-inclusive price. Monthly subscription rates start at P5,800 for up to 1,500 km, with VinFast expected to offer additional tiers for drivers with higher mileage needs.
The battery subscription plan offers several advantages. For those looking to transition to an EV without a large upfront payment, it lowers the initial price of the VF 5 by P200,000, making it more affordable for new EV buyers. VinFast also takes full responsibility for the battery’s health under the subscription plan, guaranteeing battery replacement if
capacity falls below 70%. This eliminates concerns about long-term battery degradation, a significant benefit for EV newcomers. Additionally, by handling battery maintenance and replacement for subscribers, VinFast helps maintain higher resale values, as potential buyers can trust the battery will be in good condition.
For drivers who prefer the traditional stability of full ownership without monthly fees, buying the VF 5 with the battery included is an attractive option. Although it requires a higher initial investment, it offers the convenience of full ownership and avoids recurring subscription costs. This approach can be especially cost-effective for drivers who charge at home and have moderate driving habits, as home charging typically offers substantial savings compared to gasoline. Over time, buying the battery upfront may result in long-term savings. For instance, drivers covering about 1,500 km per month will find that the P200,000 difference between
the purchase price and the subscription option roughly equals three years of battery subscription fees, with potential for greater savings thereafter.
To fully appreciate the cost advantages of going electric with VinFast’s VF 5, it’s helpful to compare it with gasolinepowered vehicles in the same segment. A similar gasoline vehicle consuming 6.5 liters per 100 kilometers would cost about P6,460 per month for 1,500 km of driving, at an average fuel price of P66.26 per liter. In contrast, the VF 5 with its 37.23 kWh battery and 326.4 km NEDC-tested range uses about 11.34 kWh per 100 km, translating to just P1,973 in monthly electricity costs based on a household electricity rate of P11.6/kWh.
With the battery subscription model, the VF 5’s total monthly cost rises to P7,773, which is slightly higher than a gasoline vehicle’s fuel costs but offers the advantage of a P200,000 reduction in upfront costs. This can appeal to eco-conscious drivers looking to lower their initial investment.
The battery subscription option is ideal for drivers seeking a lower initial cost or for those concerned about battery longevity. High-mileage drivers, such as ride-hailing operators or fleet drivers covering over 3,000 km monthly, may also find value in the subscription model’s fixed cost for extended mileage. On the other hand, lowmileage drivers might benefit more from buying the battery upfront, as this approach avoids recurring fees and allows for straightforward ownership.
With the VF 5, VinFast has made EV ownership more accessible in the Philippines, offering options that fit a variety of financial preferences and driving habits. The battery subscription is an excellent choice for budget-conscious consumers who prefer a lower upfront cost, while buying with the battery included appeals to those who prioritize full ownership and long-term savings.
As VinFast expands its reach in the Philippines, the VF 5 offers an affordable, eco-friendly entry into electric driving, making the EV transition more accessible to everyone. Whether you prioritize initial affordability or long-term ownership, VinFast’s flexible options make the VF 5 a compelling choice for drivers looking to join the electric revolution.
