Have you noticed as we get older, time seems a bit faster than when we were kids? A week seemed to take a long time and a semester seemed like forever. I could swear we just started 2024 and now it’s already our May issue. We’re well into summer, our airconditioners are running all day and our electric bills are through the roof. And that’s why we crank these out monthly so we can keep our airconditioners on. It’s been so hot schools have been cancelling classes, but the auto industry hasn’t slowed down even for summer.

In our Fresh Off the Boat section we bring you the New Ford Mustang and Mazda’s roadster gets a refresh and we love the 2024 Mx-5. There’s an environmentally friendly Porsche, the new Turbo E-Hybrid Cayenne, Toyota Motor Philippines unveiled their new Corolla Cross Hybrid and a new Chinese EV brand, Hycan, hits our shores with their intial lineup.

There’s a lot going on so our industry news section is packed and our main feature is the JETOUR Dashing Symphony, unveiled earlier this year and has probably one of the best sounding entertainment systems in a Chinese brand in the market. The JL Audio set-up adds to this suv’s likeability, and the Dashing unsurprisingly sells quite well already.

We test Dongfeng’s EC36 8 seat EV passenger van and get a taste of the EV ownership experience, and this small van is quite fun to drive. There’s a piece about the Volkswagen ID4 that our EIC Ira Panganiban got to photograph and his friend’s ownership experience. We inspire you to support your children with a Motorsports feature of the son of Ronnie Trinidad, one of our guys here at Autocar, showing his son’s racing potential as young karter.

I’ll let the rest of this issue speak for itself and we’ll keep on doing what we do.

Be well, and catch you in the next one!

This lovely Dagenham-built 1950s Ford Popular, which I spotted at Goodwood, is a perfect reminder of how beautiful some of the cheapest Fords were back then, either side of the Pond. It was great to see it out and about, although its official 0-50mph time of 35sec suggests the journeys out and back might have been a bit painful.

MOVE IT launches ‘Tropang May Malasakit’ program

Aligned with its mission to foster sustainable and impactful livelihoods for its rider-partners, homegrown motorcycle taxi provider MOVE IT has launched the “Tropang May Malasakit” Program — an initiative tailored to enhance the welfare and bolster support for the “Kuya and Ate ng Kalsada.”

This comprehensive rider-partner welfare and engagement program offers a healthy cadence of rewards and support services to riders, including health insurance, financial assistance, and access to training and development programs to safeguard their well-being and professional growth.

“Our rider-partners often share a common reality, they are the primary breadwinners for themselves and their families. We are committed to providing comprehensive support for drivers by offering them health insurance, financial assistance, and opportunities for skill development. We

believe that having these initiatives in place better equip our rider-partners to attain social security for themselves and their loved ones,” MOVE IT General Manager Wayne Jacinto said.

BRIDGING FINANCIAL GAPS, FOSTERING SOCIAL SECURITY

Recognizing the riders’ lack of access to traditional financial institutions and services, MOVE IT has partnered with GrabFinancial Group Philippines to offer the micro-financing product “Ka-Tropa Cash Loan”. This loan, exclusively available to MOVE IT rider-partners, offers accessible financing with flexible repayment terms, providing a practical solution to their financial needs.

Promising quick disbursement as fast as 24 hours, Ka-Tropa Cash Loan serves as a lifeline for rider-partners who need to finance essentials such as tuition fees, vehicle maintenance and repairs, and even entrepreneurial

capital. The seamless experience is made possible by the efficient assessment process of application which involves the riding record of the applicant, their earning potential, and credit score with GrabFinance.

The Ka-Tropa Cash Loan has also been thoughtfully designed to offer an easy-pay repayment experience, with flexible payment terms that can be as low as Php50 per day. By opting in for daily automatic deductions, rider-partners get to settle their loans worry-free.

To enhance the confidence of riderpartners and ease their worries while on the road, MOVE IT also tapped Manulife to provide Platinum and Gold-tier riders with health and life insurance of up to P1,000,000. Through this, the Kuya and Ate ng Kalsada are reassured of added support should they face untoward incidents on the road. The Manulife insurance package is on top of the existing free accident

and InLife medical coverage, and food and fuel vouchers provided to rider-partners.

MOVE IT has also announced tech updates to its driver app, which are geared at boosting the productivity of riderpartners on the road. One of these exciting updates is the introduction of a visualized Heat Map. This innovative feature identifies high-demand areas, enabling riderpartners to strategically position themselves and improve their booking acceptance rate.

Other technologies highlighted during the event include the AutoAccept feature, which streamlines the booking process within the driver app, allowing riders to concentrate more on their driving. Another beloved feature by rider-partners is Set Destination, which enables riders to pinpoint where they are headed so they are effectively matched with passengers traveling along the same route.

All of these new tech features are geared at

making every minute count for rider-partners to help them optimize their earnings capacity.

“MOVE IT is committed to professionalizing the habal-habal sector by providing top-tier tools and solutions to our valued rider-partners and Tropang May Malasakit is just one of the programs that allows us to fully support their long-term journey towards giving their families a better future,” Jacinto said.

During the same conference, Jacinto emphasized MOVE IT’s unwavering commitment to the safety of its passengers and rider-partners. This commitment is particularly evident in the Malasakit sa Biyahe Program, a focused initiative under the broader Tropang May Malasakit. MOVE IT is enhancing its dedication to safety by introducing new road safety features, establishing more efficient reporting mechanisms, and implementing comprehensive skills assessment and development programs.

DONGFENG EC36 8-SEAT EV VAN

Electric People Mover

Diamond Auto Group EV Corp. introduced themselves last year as the distributor of Dongfeng Electric commercial vehicles. And one of the vehicles in their lineup is the EC36, a small-ish 8-seat fully electric commuter van.

26 AUTOCAR.COM.PH MAY 2024
FIRST DRIVES MAY 2024 AUTOCAR.COM.PH 27

EXTERIOR

The EC36 is a no frills, earthfriendly people mover with a length of 4500mm, width of 1680mm, height of 2000mm and wheelbase of 3050mm. This puts it in a class smaller than Toyota’s Hi-Ace commuter. It’s equipped with the necessities, and also pretty much the basics of what a people mover might need.

Up front it has height adjustable halogen headlights with daytime running lights and fog lights. Dual-sliding doors allows passengers to get in or out from either side of the vehicle, it has a large rear hatch which opens up to a large cargo area behind the

third row passengers, and It rolls on 14” steel wheels wrapped in tall 185/70’s.

INTERIOR

The EC36 is equipped with some luxuries though, like keyless entry, power windows, power steering and manual air conditioning. Fabric seats for all occupants are comfortable. Seating is 2+3+3.

It has a touchscreen entertainment system which also doubles as the screen for the reversing camera. It has AM/FM and offers USB and Bluetooth (music and phone) connectivity. The rear passengers have air conditioning and the floor is an

easy clean vinyl surface for both front and rear areas. It’s equipped with driver and front passenger airbags, and rear parking sensors.

POWERTRAIN

This van is powered by a liquid cooled 334.88V CATL Lithium Iron Phosphate battery with a capacity of 41.86 kWh, which powers an electric, permanent magnet synchronous motor that puts out max power of 82Ps with 200Nm of torque. This all gives the EC36 an NEDC range of 300kms and a top speed of 100kph. It has two charging ports, a CCS2 DC fast charge port and a Type 2 AC charging port.

IMPRESSIONS

Driving this EV is easy, get in, step on the brake pedal all the way in and turn the key for the green READY light in the instrument cluster to turn on. Once that’s illuminated, you turn the drive select knob to D, release the parking brake and go about your drive as you would normally.

It feels no different from an ICE vehicle off the line, but only when you’re gentle. The EC36 can accelerate mad if you want it to, an EV’s max torque is immediately available at all speeds, and that makes driving this people moving box lots of fun. It doesn’t feel like a box at all. It’s quite nimble.

28 AUTOCAR.COM.PH MAY 2024

When you select D, the van runs quiet and can coast quite a distance, but I opted to select E which I assume is some form of energy recovery mode, which I discovered a second or so after you lift off the accelerator, you’ll hear an audible whir followed by marked deceleration.

EV PERFORMANCE AND CHARGING

Its range of 300kms is based on a very specific set of parameters to achieve and perhaps even the air conditioning turned off. That said, normal city driving, I averaged 20kms for every 10% battery level, and if I drove “gently”, I could squeeze out about 25kms/10%, all

with the air conditioning on. Just like an ICE vehicle, you wouldn’t drive an EV to 0% anyway.

IMPRESSIONS

As a light commercial vehicle, this makes sense to be used as a company errand vehicle or employee shuttle. It’s range is relative to your intended use, perhaps an ideal scenario would be errands in the near vicinity of your office where you constantly need to pick up and drop things off nearby or a regular circuit.

One of the caveats of owning an EV is the longer you drive it between charges, the longer it will take to charge to recoup the

“The

per-kilometer running cost of an EV is much cheaper than an internal combustion engine, especially with the constantly rising costs of both diesel and gasoline. Savings are always good, and at the end of the day, an EV would benefit your bottom line.”

consumed energy and this applies to all EV’s. The EC36 takes about 2 hours for every 20% using a 7kWh charger like those found in SM Malls.

Needing no fuel and somewhat less complicated in maintenance, this could save your company considerable amounts of money in the long run. The perkilometer running cost of an EV is much cheaper than an internal combustion engine, especially with the constantly rising costs of both diesel and gasoline. Savings are always good, and at the end of the day, an EV would benefit your bottom line.

If you’re in the market for a people mover for your business, the EC 36 might be a good consideration,

while the initial cost might be a little high, at Php1.7M, your long term savings might just be worth it, don’t forget, it’s also exempt from number coding.

Stepping inside, the interior did not disappoint. The cabin is spacious and airy, with ample headroom and legroom for both front and rear passengers. The minimalist dashboard, dominated by a large touchscreen infotainment system, reinforces the modern vibe. Soft-touch aterials and well-crafted finishes add a sense of quality and comfort. The ID.4’s panoramic sunroof, a feature I particularly enjoy, enhances the feeling of openness and connection with the surroundings.

PERFORMANCE AND HANDLING

Driving the ID.4 has been a revelation. The electric motor delivers a smooth and quiet ride, with instant torque that makes acceleration effortless. The rear-wheeldri e confi uration of y odel offers a

balanced and engaging driving experience. With 201 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque, the ID.4 is not a sports car, but it provides more than adequate performance for everyday driving.

One of the highlights of the ID.4 is its ride comfort. The suspension is tuned to absorb road imperfections well, providing a cushioned and composed ride. Even on longer journeys, the seats remain

supportive, and fatigue is minimal. The ID.4 is remarkably quiet, with minimal road and wind noise, making it a serene place to be in.

The regenerative braking system is intuitive and can be adjusted to suit personal preferences. I prefer the stronger setting, which allows for onepedal driving and enhances energy recovery, extending the driving range. Speaking of range, the ID.4 offers an EPAestimated range of around 250 miles on a full charge, which I found to be accurate in real-world conditions.

TECHNOLOGY AND FEATURES

Volkswagen has equipped the ID.4 with a suite of advanced technology features. The 10-inch touchscreen is the

The ID.4’s driver-assistance features are comprehensive. Adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking are standard, enhancing safety and convenience. The parking assist feature, which can automatically steer the car into parking spaces, is particularly useful in tight urban environments.

One aspect that stands out is the ID. Light – a thin strip of light below the windshield that communicates various vehicle statuses, such as charging progress and navigation prompts. It’s a unique and subtle way to keep the driver informed without being distracting.

CHARGING AND PRACTICALITY

Charging the ID.4 is straightforward. I installed a Level 2 home charger, which typically replenishes the battery overnight. Public charging infrastructure

has been improving, and I’ve found plenty of charging stations available during my travels. Fast charging capability is another plus, allowing for a quick top-up on longer trips. Using a DC fast charger, the ID.4 can go from 5% to 80% in about 38 minutes.

In terms of practicality, the ID.4 excels with a spacious cargo area. The rear seats fold at pro idin a ple space for lar er items. For everyday errands, the trunk space is ore than sufficient and the car’s interior storage solutions, such as door pockets and a center console, are well thought out.

The Volkswagen ID.4 has exceeded my expectations in many ways. It combines the practicality and comfort of a compact S with the benefits of electric mobility. The thoughtful design, smooth

performance, and advanced features make it a compelling choice for anyone considering an EV. Transitioning to the ID.4 has not only been an eco-friendly decision but also a highly satisfying one. It’s a vehicle that showcases Volkswagen’s commitment to the future of driving, making every journey enjoyable and sustainable.

FIRST TIMER CADET GO-KART RACER, MAX TRINIDAD BRINGS HOME SILVER TROPHY

A7-year-old, moving up to the CADET Go-Kart division, Max Trinidad, or “Max,” brought home a silver trophy among 6 participants during the IAME SERIES PHILIPPINES 2024 held at City Kart Racing, Porac, Pampanga, last March 24, 2024. Max started go-karting at the age of 5. After two months of training, he joined his first Bambino category race under TEAM BRE of the Pacho Blanco Race Engineering group. From 2022 to 2023, he

consistently brought home gold, silver, and bronze trophies.

At a very young age, Max was trained not just to conquer the track in his best time but also to make decisions instinctively on the race track. As he takes turns and switches between gas and brake, it also requires serious reflexes, mental concentration, and focus. Not only did he have to follow and memorize the racing line, but karting also taught him discipline, determination, and perseverance during the race and off the track.

ISUZUPH CONTINUES PARTNERSHIP WITH PHILIPPINE RALLYCROSS SERIES FOR 2024

Isuzu Philippines Corporation (IPC) has announced their renewal of partnership with the Philippine Rallycross Series for the 2024 season. This partnership, which began in 2021, has been a pivotal part of IPC’s engagement with motorsports, particularly rallycross, where the Isuzu D-MAX has showcased its superior power and performance.

The Philippine Rallycross Series, sanctioned by the Automobile Association of the Philippines, Inc. (AAP), provides a platform for rallycross drivers and enthusiasts to showcase their skills and test their vehicles’ performance on challenging dirt tracks. IPC’s renewed

Joining a racing motorsport requires bravery, courage, and guts, but through proper training by Coach Pacho Blanco, Max learned techniques for finishing the course safely. Through constant reminders, lap times, and beating his best time, Max was able to master the racing lines in no time.

Having a tall father, Ronnie Trinidad, who is a media content creator for AutoCar PH, height and weight have been a constant challenge for Max. In straight lines, he has a hard time catching speed compared to other racers who are lighter in weight. Now in the cadet division, it is a challenge for Max as he continues

The IAME Series Philippines Cadet division is for ages 7 to 12, giving Max 5 years to develop more in the coming seasons. Max’s dad is already thinking that if he grows faster and bigger than other competitors, he plans to move him up to a junior go-kart for added challenge.

For Max, go-karting is a lot of fun; he meets a lot of people and develops his personality. He feels very lucky to be

Since the world shifted gears back to its prepandemic pace, life has been a whirlwind of activity. But amidst the hustle and bustle, Suzuki Philippines, Inc. offered a reprieve with a unique experiential drive featuring the new Suzuki XL7 Hybrid.

This drive stood out from the usual media events I attend. It wasn’t just about test-driving the latest model; it was a fuel economy challenge. As we enjoyed the comfort of the new XL7, equipped with an electrified drivetrain, we

also competed to see which car among the 12 participants could achieve the most efficient fuel consumption.

Though I’ve been covering the motoring beat for a while, this was my first eco run. I’d heard tales from seasoned journalists about the competitiveness of such events. But Suzuki Philippines aimed to ensure that everyone could appreciate the new XL7 while maximizing its fuel efficiency comfortably. Rules like maintaining air conditioning and following a specific route were enforced.

Our journey began in Makati, where media delegates were picked up and transported to Suzuki Auto Kawit to kick off the drive. From Kawit, the eco-run covered 71 kilometers to the Phoenix gas station in Nasugbu, Batangas. The goal: to use as little fuel as possible with the XL7 Hybrid. After refilling to measure consumption accurately, our team, led by Manong Ron De Los Reyes, reached the endpoint using only 1.35 liters of fuel, securing second place.

During the official Automobile

Association Philippines fuel economy test, the XL7 Hybrid achieved up to 22 km/L on the highway. However, during our drive, some groups recorded an impressive 67.80 km/L. While everyone aimed to conserve fuel, these numbers were remarkable.

Beyond its electrified K15B engine, the latest XL7 boasts updates like new automatic LED headlights and a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. These features were put to the test as we passed through the Kaybiang Tunnel and enjoyed our journey to Nasugbu.

After refueling in Nasugbu, we headed to Pico de Loro for indoor and outdoor activities, followed by a relaxing evening at the Pico Sands Hotel. The next day, we continued to Casitas De Victoria for a treeplanting activity, symbolizing our commitment to environmental stewardship.

Suzuki Philippines’ two-day media drive offered a welcome break from the usual Monday rush. The fuel economy challenge encouraged us to take it easy, highlighting the XL7 Hybrid’s versatility as a reliable companion for work and leisurely drives outside the metro.

ESCAPING THE HEAT

DRIVING THE HONDA BR-V 1.5 V CVT TO BAGUIO

midst the scorching summer heat, with temperatures rising relentlessly, the desire to seek refuge in cooler climes becomes irresistible. Fortunately, a long-awaited barkada trip beckoned, promising respite in the country’s summer capital. Courtesy of Honda Cars Philippines, a Honda BR-V 1.5 V CVT awaited, serving as our chariot for the weekend, whisking us away from the oppressive urban heat.

ADeparting from Manila on a balmy Friday night, the end of a hectic workweek heralded our journey. Having traversed from my workplace in Carmona, Cavite, to our rendezvous point in Quezon City, we packed our belongings and nestled into the BR-V, embarking with six adults and a trove of weekend essentials.

Night driving offers its unique allure, shrouded in the veil of darkness, where urban sprawls gradually give way to suburban tranquility. Yet, there’s a certain

charm to nocturnal voyages; roads are less congested, fostering a heightened sense of connection with the vehicle. Along the tollways’ expansive stretches, the BR-V exuded stability and comfort, effortlessly accommodating its occupants and cargo without a hint of strain. Notably, even under full load, its rear remained steadfast, a testament to its handling prowess.

While not my maiden encounter with the currentgeneration BR-V, having

previously acquainted myself with its base model variant, piloting this mid-level iteration offered a familiar yet elevated experience. Laden with passengers and baggage, the BR-V’s nimble 1.5-liter i-VTEC DOHC engine effortlessly propelled us forward, unfazed by the additional payload.

Impressively, the BR-V exhibited remarkable fuel efficiency, recording commendable figures even under a full load. Throughout our journey, it consistently delivered

economical consumption, a testament to its engineering finesse.

Distinguished by subtle comfort enhancements like leather upholstery and enhanced connectivity features, such as CarPlay integration, the BR-V V variant garnered unanimous praise from our group. Seamlessly blending entertainment and navigation functionalities, it ensured a delightful journey for all onboard.

As we ascended towards Baguio via the newly reopened Kennon Road, the BR-V effortlessly tackled the mountainous terrain, navigating steep inclines with ease. Its intuitive CVT transmission seamlessly adapted to varying throttle inputs, ensuring a smooth ascent. The light yet responsive steering provided ample feedback, contributing to an enjoyable driving experience.

Upon reaching our destination, the refreshing mountain breeze offered a welcome respite from the stifling urban heat. While a far cry from Baguio’s famed Christmas season chill, it provided a welcome reprieve from the sweltering temperatures elsewhere.

Our weekend escapade

with the BR-V proved to be a delightful experience, surpassing our expectations at every turn. A versatile companion, it seamlessly transitioned from daily commuter to weekend cruiser, effortlessly accommodating our diverse needs. Suffice it to say, the BR-V’s ease of driving and versatile functionality make it a compelling choice for discerning MPV buyers.

PERFORMANCE AND POWER WITH THE MOTO MORINI NAKED SCRAMBLER

As someone who frequently travels for work by car or motorcycle, I’ve noticed the increasing presence of new motorcycle brands in the Philippine market. One brand that recently caught my eye is Moto Morini, a renowned Italian manufacturer reintroduced to the Philippines by the Bristol Group in 2022. The sleek machines from Moto Morini have been turning heads on the streets, prompting me to explore their offerings. Intrigued by their naked bike models, especially the Seimmezzo, I contacted a friend associated with the brand to arrange a test ride. The promise of innovative design and superior performance left me eager to experience what Moto Morini has

to offer riders like myself.

The STR (Scrambler) variant immediately stood out to me with its resemblance to my previous Ducati Scrambler. It embodies the essential features of a scrambler – simplicity and a comfortable riding position with wide, raised handlebars.

When I first approached the bike, one of my initial checks was the seat height to ensure I could comfortably reach the ground when stopping. Fortunately, its 31.8-inch height was perfect for me. Weighing 200kg dry, it struck an ideal balance – neither too light nor too heavy for my petite frame.

After inspecting all the necessary features, I finally took the bike for a test ride along the highway. I was instantly impressed by the smooth throttle

response, effortlessly cruising from 0 to 100 km/h at 4,500 rpm in sixth gear. However, I did notice that the clutch action was not particularly light, although it was easy to modulate.

One standout feature of this bike is its 5-inch TFT dash. It not only includes a gear indicator but also features a tire-pressure monitoring system – an unusual addition compared to other bikes I’ve tested. This level of technology and convenience truly sets this motorcycle apart.

The 15.5-liter fuel tank is attractively shaped, allowing my knees to tuck into its flanks, creating a sense of unity between me and the machine. This thoughtful design detail enhances both the aesthetics

and functionality of the bike, contributing to a more comfortable riding experience.

The STR is also equipped with a Brembo disc brake system, Pirelli Angel GT 18-inch front and 17-inch dual sport tires, and KYB suspensions, ensuring a smooth and exhilarating ride.

Overall, my experience with the Moto Morini STR left me thoroughly impressed with its performance and innovative features. It is both newbie and short rider-friendly, priced at only P458,000.00.

For those interested in the Seimmezzo variant or other Moto Morini models, you can visit their showroom at 10th Avenue, Caloocan City.

NAVIGATING CONFIDENCE

BELL MX-9 OFFROAD HELMET

The journey of mastering motorcycle riding is filled with twists, turns, and unexpected challenges. No matter how experienced a rider may be, there are moments that demand a pause for reflection and a commitment to continuous learning. As someone who has been actively riding since 2019, I understand the importance of staying vigilant and well-prepared for whatever the road may bring.

In April, I seized the opportunity to participate in a one-day motocross refresher course led by the esteemed coach, Sam Tolentino. This experience not only provided an avenue for honing my riding skills but also allowed me to put

the Bell MX-9 MIPS helmet to the test – a vital piece of gear for any rider navigating offroad terrain.

Having previously enjoyed the safety and style of my Bell Bullitt helmet, I had high expectations for the MX-9 MIPS. One of the first things I noticed was its lightweight construction, despite its polycarbonate shell. Weighing in at 1,533g, it felt surprisingly comfortable and balanced on my head, without the cumbersome feeling often associated with offroad helmets.

Fitment is paramount when it comes to helmets, and the MX-9 MIPS did not disappoint. True to its size chart, it provided a proportional fit to

my body, avoiding the dreaded “bobblehead” effect. The generous padding ensured a snug yet comfortable fit, offering peace of mind without sacrificing comfort during extended rides.

As I tackled the challenging course under the scorching sun, the helmet’s velocity flow ventilation system and quickdrying interior padding proved invaluable in managing sweat and heat buildup. Additionally, the silver lining interior aided in odor control, ensuring a fresh and comfortable ride even in the most demanding conditions.

However, what truly sets the MX-9 MIPS apart is its Multidirectional Impact Protection

System (MIPS). This innovative technology, borrowed from the cycling industry, features a movable plastic liner between the helmet’s EPS inner shell. In the event of an impact, the MIPS system is designed to redirect rotational motion away from the head, potentially reducing the risk of brain injury – a crucial advancement in helmet safety.

The Bell MX-9 MIPS offers exceptional value for its price point. With a range of designs and graphics to choose from, riders can enjoy both style and safety on the road. Available for only P7,590 from Dan’s Ph, it’s a worthy investment for riders seeking performance and protection in equal measure.
