023 came and almost as quickly as you can read this sentence, will be over faster than it would take for us to catch our collective breaths.
A new year is upon us and as much as we would wish for 2024 to be an easy year, but the auto industry is poised to keep us on our toes. A lot has happened in 2023, and we know for sure 2024 promises to be even more exciting. The Filipino personal and business vehicle buyer will be the ultimate winner, with more choices to satisfy various needs and budgets.
COVID still lurks and the pandemic not withstanding, auto brands will ramp up for this year and we, at Autocar Philippines are ready for what 2024 may bring.
In this issue’s Fresh Out The Box, we take a look at the last vehicles to be launched at the end of 2023, the BYD Atto3 and the New Kia Seltos. A new brand enters the market, KG Mobility and their initial line up, the Tivoli, Tivoli Grand, the Torres and the Rexton. The model names sound familiar? You’re not wrong.
Our News section brings you upto speed on the goings on in the auto and allied industries. We feature the Tokyo Mobility Show, as our EIC Ira
Panganiban and contributor Randy Peregrino got to take a sneak peek at what new cool things maybe making their way to our shores in the near future.
Our cover story features a company, which will help your company be more earth friendly or sustainable, Diamond Auto Group EV Corp., the distributors of all-electric Dongfeng commercial vehicles. Our main feature is their handsome Rich6 450 True EV Pickup, John Rey San Diego takes a closer look at what makes it unique. We also feature the rest of their EV line up. Incidentally, they also carry electric Dongfeng passenger cars in their showroom in Cainta, along Marcos Highway, and we included them here too!
In our motorsports section, our very own John Rey did quite well in the recently concluded Toyota GR Vios Cup and he tells us how that felt. (He owes the AutocarPH team a round of drinks for his podium finish.) We also feature the youngest ever 4x4 NASFOR racer from Ormoc, CJ Doyon and we wrap up the Seaoil Radical Challenge for 2023.
As we end 2023 and start 2024 with this issue, we wish you and your friends and family a Happy New Year! Fasten your seatbelt… we predict this year is gonna be a doozy, but we’ll keep you informed every kilowatt hour of the way!

CAUGHT IN A LUBRICITY CYCLE?
ow often do you check your engine oil level? Do you let someone else do it? Would you even know where the dipstick is?
HIf your vehicle’s oil pressure light comes on or the pressure gauge shows an abnormal reading, it could signal a major problem. The oil pressure is one crucial guideline of a healthy engine.
Your lubrication system is essentially composed of the pump, oil filter, lubrication system and some hardware. In a nerdy definition “The pressure in the system is generated by the resistance that the oil must overcome in the lines to reach the lubricated components. A pump is used to force lubricant through the system. When an engine is in the design stage, the pump is engineered to generate the required pressure and flow to allow the lubricant to circulate to the most remote part.” Done.
When your oil pressure is low there is likely not enough lubricant flowing through the system. Note that lubricant starvation leads to metal-tometal contact and ends to machine failure. It may not be an immediate death, but it will happen, and the repair costs could be high-priced, with
replacing the engine a better way.
Your oil pressure in an engine can be low for a number of reasons that may be real or just incorrect.
For an old engine it will burn more oil and you may not have enough oil in the engine. If leaks are noticeable around the engine or oil drops on the floor are visible have the leaking part fixed or replaced immediately. Avoid overextending a change oil even if your engine is not that old and follow proper oil change intervals. If you consume more than a liter of oil every month or so an overhaul may be needed.
Have you switched to a high or low viscosity oil to save on funds? This could also give you different readings too.
Viscosity affects oil pressure. Sample is, pouring
oil on an inclined surface would result in dripping downhill due to the force of gravity. Oil viscosity is influenced by the original lubricant viscosity selected, the right operating temperatures, the breakdown of viscosity index improver additives and the presence of contaminants such as glycol and soot. Your car manual specifies the recommended viscosity grades according to the design and the ambient temperatures of your vehicle would be operating.
Pouring a higher viscosity choice may have slight implications particularly for engine startups in cold weather.
For diesel engines, the pressure gauge commonly declares real-time pressure in pounds per square inch or bars. There are some lubricant manufacturers producing
engine oil with a lower viscosity that is still within the range of the SAE grade.
Remember that lower viscosity offers better fluidity through lubrication systems but may result in lower pressure in the gauge. If the pressure is within the normal range, there is no cause for concern. Sometimes, you may notice that some engine oils display higher pressures than others.
When the oil pressure warning lights up but have verified the oil level is correct and the engine is running normally with no bizarre noise or rise in engine temperature, the problem may be a defective oil sensor or sending unit.
You may have the oil pressure evaluated with a gauge but if the pressure is normal, simply replace the sensor. However, if the warning light or low gauge reading continues after replacing the sensor, have the oil pump diagnosed.
Capitalize on high-quality lubricants, including the right viscosity grade and proper quality standard specified in your engine/car manual.
And once more, change the oil and filter at the correct maintenance intervals to lower the risk of low oil pressure in your engine.
Capitalize on high-quality lubricants, including the right viscosity grade and proper quality standard specified in your engine/car manual.

MY WEEK IN CARS
MONDAY
Few things are more reassuring than hanging out with people who are even crazier about cars than you. It validates your nuttiness. Today, I spent time with two such pals: long-time Autocar contributor Richard Bremner (current owner of 13 cars, from Morris 1300 GT to BMW 6 Series, via Abarth 124 Spider) and Martin Buckley, who has been a prolific writer for our sister organ Classic & Sports Car since Noah read The Beano and keeps a similar-size collection (from Renault 16TS to Rolls-Royce Cloud, via NSU Ro80) in a fine old barn a couple of villages away.
Bremner you will know quite well, because his life and times are sometimes discussed in these pages. Buckley needs more introduction. He’s one of those people whose cars honestly are his whole life. With single-minded determination, he has built a finely curated stable (supported by fascinating poster art and memorabilia) using great contacts, decisive trading skills and canny timing.
Years ago, I knew a bloke who started university in a Ford Anglia and graduated in a Maserati Quattroporte. Buckley has done even better.
TUESDAY
Out and about again with Bremner, joyously surveying the used car bargains of southern England in research for a story (for next week’s magazine) that I trust you will think presents a novel and effective way of choosing prime cars.
We had trawled Auto Trader for prospects and found plenty north of London, so meeting at Bremner’s place in Hertfordshire made sense.
Over coffee, he proudly showed me and photographer John Bradshaw a wonderful present that his wife had recently given him: a model, in Scalextric scale, of the race leaderboard from the old Reims grand prix
❝ You can now own a superb limo for knock-down money ❞
circuit, perfectly recreated in 1950s detail. A kit is available (from magneticracing.com), but this one had been fully built and beautifully finished by the makers themselves.
WEDNESDAY
After yesterday’s used car hunt, what sticks in my mind is the fast-increasing prominence of a special breed of prestige model that I hadn’t previously recognised: the ULEZrefugee ritzmobile.
It has been clear for a while that, as a result of the mayor’s impending expansion of London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone, vast numbers of older cars will in future rarely cross the M25 orbital motorway into the capital, because their owners will be liable for a daily £12.50 toll. These cars are gathering in used car emporia elsewhere in clumps, and more will arrive soon.
AND ANOTHER THING
Vale, Astra. As you read this, a man is driving a yellow and black, 1.6-litre plug-in hybrid Vauxhall hatchback out of my life forever, and I’m very sorry about that. Our household has four other cars, but I will still miss the Astra’s economy, utility, comfort and easy nature. In six months we’ve done 13,000 miles together, which, considering the availability of other wheels, says plenty.
Big diesel-engined saloons and SUVs made before September 2015 are the cars in question, and since our hunt centred on low-milers, we found some truly immaculate examples. A particular £22,000 black Range Rover Sport stays in my memory, but there were 13- and 14-plate Mercedes-Benz S-Classes, Audi A8s, Jaguar XJs and many more.
Do you rarely drive in London? In the shires, you can now own a superb, low-mileage, pre-2015 limo for knock-down money. Ironically, you will burn 30% less fossil fuel than your car’s newer, pricier, ULEZ-compliant petrol equivalent.
FRIDAY
We’re delighted to hear that the Institution of Mechanical Engineers will soon give details of a new award to recognise outstanding engineers, intended to commemorate the life and achievements of Richard Parry-Jones, who changed mainstream cars for good.
Starting with a succession of family Fords, RPJ created a culture of enthusiast-driven excellence that not only improved his own cars but dragged their rivals along too. He was a wonderful communicator, influencing and mentoring many who still work in the industry. He was especially eloquent in expounding his theories to us hacks. We’re lucky to have known him, and this award will stress the fact.

KG Mobility
One of the biggest news in the local automotive industry is the entry of a new player in the field, KG Mobility. The South Korean auto brand is now available in the Philippines under its partnership with The Covenant Car Company, Inc. (TCCCI). With its new brand along with a reputable automotive company behind its operations, KG Mobility is holding promise for its new venture in the Philippine auto market. During its brand launch, KG Mobility launched five models that are set to pit against the top players in key segments of the local automotive market.
First on the lineup is the KG Mobility Tivoli which is the brand’s gateway model. The Tivoli is a five-seater subcompact crossover SUV model that is powered by a 1.6-liter gasoline engine that is mated to either a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission.

JoyRide rolls out next-generation Super Taxi service
JoyRide Philippines recently launched the JoyRide Super Taxi, taking inspiration from Japan’s JPN Taxi and featuring onboard amenities designed to enhance passenger comfort, convenience, and safety, all at the regular metered taxi fare rate.
Pioneering the next-generation taxi services, JoyRide enables commuters to hail (“Parahin”) a Super Taxi directly on the street or conveniently book a ride through the JoyRide Superapp.
“JoyRide Super Taxi provides another efficient and dependable mode of public transport to commuters, offering a ‘De-Metrong Kasundo’ taxi service and elevating the public’s commuting
experience standards,” Noli Eala, JoyRide Senior Vice President for Corporate Affairs, said.
JoyRide will deploy 25 units initially in Metro Manila, with plans to rapidly increase its fleet next year.
The JoyRide Super Taxi sports a sleek black exterior, a spacious 5-seater cab, high roofing, a modern digital toplight, and additional onboard amenities, including an in-cabin infotainment system, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable ride for passengers.
“The public can enjoy all these features of JoyRide Super Taxi without any fare increase, as the service will still be classified as a regular metered taxi or what we call ‘De-Metrong
Kasundo,’” Eala added.

JoyRide, envisioning to be the premier mobility company in the country, is helping the current administration provide commuters with safe, affordable, and reliable modes of public transport.
Eala expressed confidence and optimism regarding the Super Taxi.
“We have high hopes for the Super Taxi service
and look forward to the positive response from commuters as they experience this new and exciting offering from JoyRide.”

“Having a continuously mobile fleet is very crucial to logistics operations, so if you’ve ever had to wait long for spare parts by other brands before, we try to make sure that you don’t repeat that experience with FOTON,” added Santos.
“Following our continuous quest for
customer satisfaction, FOTON Motor Philippines Inc. has invested to put up a spare parts warehouse hub in Cebu City, in partnership with FOTON International and FastEasy. The primary objective of this initiative is to expand FOTON’s spare parts channels in the Philippines,” said Mike Sta. Maria, FMPI Vice President for Parts.
“FOTON customers

NLEX to widen Meycauayan northbound exit
NLEX Corporation, in collaboration with the local government unit of Meycauayan, has started the widening of the Meycauayan northbound exit from two to three lanes. The tollway company will also construct new northbound exit at F. Raymundo in Barangay Pandayan as part of the Meycauayan decongestion project.
Set to be completed before Christmas, the two works aim to ease the recurrent traffic build up in NLEX Meycauayan due to high volume of vehicles queuing at exit. The widening of the Meycauayan exit ramp, once completed, will expand its capacity and ease traffic especially for those bound to Iba/Camalig road. To complement the expansion, NLEX also started the construction of the new F. Raymundo Exit which will serve as an alternate and additional route that is
aimed at “bypassing” the Meycauayan Interchange and the busy Iba/Camalig road.
While NLEX Corporation is working aggressively to provide solutions to the increasing volume of vehicles inside their expressway, the LGU of Meycauayan also committed to improving the receiving local roads of those exiting the expressway.
“We are glad that we have NLEX as our partner in alleviating the traffic caused by the increasing volume of vehicles coming to and from our city. We assure the public that the City of Meycauayan and NLEX Corporation will continuously work together in exploring long-term infrastructure solutions to help solve the traffic demand of the city,” said City of Meycauayan Mayor Henry Villarica.
In a traffic mobility and decongestion study commissioned by NLEX in July 2023, it showed that
the rapid economic growth in the city brings high demand for traffic. The expansion of the northbound exit ramp and construction of the new F. Raymundo exit were some of the traffic solutions that can help provide immediate relief in the congestion in NLEX Meycauayan.
“During the construction period, minimal lane closures will be implemented at the latter stage of the project. We would like to assure our motorists that traffic management and safety measures will be in place to
ensure motorists’ safety and minimize travel delays. Road signs and other warning devices will also be installed to guide motorists,” said NLEX Corporation President J. Luigi L. Bautista.
“We are optimistic that once these additional infrastructure solutions are in place, our motorists will experience smoother traffic flow in the area especially during peak hours,” Bautista added.
It will be recalled that NLEX, in partnership with the LGU, Department of
Public Works and Highways, and Department of Transportation, have already done various projects to help decongest the traffic inside and outside the expressway in the Meycauayan area. In 2017, NLEX opened the Libtong and Pandayan Exits and expanded the southbound toll plaza to address traffic buildup at the interchange. While in 2021, a portion of NLEX right-ofway was used to open the two-lane Meycauayan East Service Road connecting Libtong in Meycauayan City and Lawang Bato in Valenzuela City which was then extended to Marilao in 2022, providing alternative routes going in and out of Valenzuela, Meycauayan and Marilao and helped ease traffic in the said areas.
NLEX Corporation is a subsidiary of the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC), the toll road arm of the Metro Pacific Investments Corporation (MPIC).

HONDA PRESENTS A DIVERSE MOBILITY LINEUP AT THE JMS 2023
After the Tokyo Motor Show, now comes the Japan Mobility Show (JMS), assuring a broader range of mobility products, services, and technologies. This year, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. Exhibited automobiles and diverse forms of current and future mobility, including aircraft, that the brand is pursuing.
Presenting the stage-themed “Honda Dream Loop”, Director, President, and Representative Toshihiro Mibe explained it was

NEW GLOBAL BRAND SLOGAN
“The Power of Dreams – How We Move You.” It is Honda’s new Global Brand Slogan. The company CEO explained that it conveys the message that the dreams of everyone working at Honda have always been the driving force of the brand. Additionally, “Transcend” and “Augment” are unique Honda value propositions. Honda claims that the mobility products and services that embody their dreams will enable people to “transcend various constraints such as time and place” and to “augment their abilities and possibilities.”
In celebration of Honda’s 75th anniversary, Mibe pointed out how the company looked back on its history – offering a wide range of value to customers and society as a manufacturer of mobility products. “We can say that Honda has grown to this point while always being driven by “dreams,” and taking on challenges to realize what was thought to be impossible,” he said.
“Mobility enables us to see new surroundings, meet new people and discover new things, which expands the world we live in. On the other hand, mobility faces various constraints. It may take a long time just to get to the destination, and we often cannot do anything else during that time. Or, we cannot even get to some places due to a lack of the proper means of transportation. Honda wants to enable people to transcend such constraints, and we want to continue offering the joy and freedom of mobility into the future,” said Mibe.
The company CEO also explained that by using new mobility products and services at the user’s will, people can go faster and farther. “We can go to places where we cannot get to only with human ability. New mobility products and services will enable people to do things that were not possible before. That is the value of “augmenting people’s possibilities,” he added.
Meanwhile, various Honda mobility products and technologies took center stage intending to “transcend various constraints such as time and place” and to “augment their abilities and possibilities.”

Honda Prologue Elite
THE AUTONOMOUS (ELECTRIC) VEHICLE “CRUISE ORIGIN”
Jointly developed by GM, Cruise and Honda and purpose-built for a driverless ride-hail service, the self-driving Cruise Origin is designed to pick up customers at a specified location and drive them to the destination. The process from hailing to payment will be done through a dedicated app on smartphones.
As a self-driving vehicle with no driver’s seat or steering wheel, it features a vast cabin space that can be as private as a personally owned vehicle, allowing six people to ride simultaneously, face-toface. This driverless ride-hail service will offer a new mobility
experience in Japan and target many customers.
The three companies plan to launch the Cruise Origin in central Tokyo in early 2026. The service will start with dozens of Cruise Origins and then expand to a fleet of 500 Cruise Origins. The three companies plan to subsequently develop and scale the service to areas outside of central Tokyo.
SUSTAINA-C CONCEPT AND POCKET CONCEPT WORLD PREMIERE
Designed to enable people to transcend the constraints of limited resources, these models are made of acrylic resin that is recycled and reused. “This kind of
resource circulation will enable us to transcend the constraints of the limited availability of resources and achieve both environmental sustainability and the joy and freedom of mobility long into the future,” said Mibe.
He also explained that mobility products are made from various materials, including metals, resins and fabrics. “However, these materials and resources are limited. If we only use current ways of making products and recycling, there will, sooner or later, come a time when it will become difficult to sustain our production of mobility products,” Mibe added.
HONDA JET AND HONDA EVTOL
According to Honda, when combined with mobility products on the ground, making “threedimensional mobility” available, these mobility products in the skies will enable people to transcend the constraints of place and distance. Honda exhibited the full-size interior mockup of the HondaJet Elite II light business jet to showcase the cabin experience.
In addition, Honda displayed the one-fifth-size exterior mockup of the Honda eVTOL (electrical Vertical Take Off and Landing
aircraft) and its gas turbine hybrid system currently under development.
CI-MEV
Making a global premiere was the CI-MEV self-driving micromobility. Aimed to augment the living radius for people, this two-seater, four-wheel electric vehicle features Honda’s original Cooperative Intelligence (CI) and automated driving technologies. Also, it will offer easily accessible last-mile mobility for any user. Honda strives to augment the living radius for people, especially those in situations that limit mobility, such as when there is no public transportation or when people experience difficulty walking a long distance.
UNI-ONE
One of the sought-after display models was the interesting handsfree seated personal mobility device. Featuring the balance control technology developed through Honda’s robotics research and the Honda Omni Traction Drive System, Honda’s original wheel mechanism moves naturally in all directions. The UNI-ONE is a mobility device the user can steer simply by shifting their body weight while sitting and moving as if they

were walking. Honda claims that the UNI-ONE will expand opportunities for users with mobility challenges.
PROLOGUE EV SUV
Also on display was the upcoming all-electric mid-size crossover SUV, jointly developed by Honda and General Motors. Intended for the North American market, the official launch and sale are planned for 2024. According to Honda, the design was led by a youthful, diverse team of designers in Honda Design Studio in Los Angeles, who utilized virtual reality tools to create a neo-rugged design concept with simple and clean styling. The spacious Prologue offers a spacious and techy cabin. With 21-inch wheels and a wheelbase on par with other rugged vehicles, this all-electric SUV has some sizeable capability.
PRELUDE CONCEPT
Considered as the brand’s showrunner was the comeback of the Prelude nameplate. Mibe concluded his presentation by unveiling the Prelude Concept. Donning sport coupe form, the Prelude Concept almost looked like a production model and was reported to pack a hybrid powertrain. Honda claims this
upcoming sports coupe will take the “joy of driving” into the fullfledged electrified future.
“Honda has always been committed to creating sporty vehicles. And the word “prelude” means an “introductory or preceding performance.” This model will become the prelude for our future models, which will inherit the “joy of driving” into the full-fledged electrified future and embody Honda’s unalterable sports mindset. The Prelude Concept is a specialty sports model that will offer an exhilarating experience that makes you want to keep going
forever and extraordinary excitement you never felt before,” said Mibe.
Since Honda’s showcase was about diverse mobility, its other products designed to augment people’s abilities and possibilities were also displayed. One was the Autonomous Work Vehicle (AWV), a platform-style autonomous vehicle which can be utilized for a wide range of applications using various attachments. Honda AWV is being developed to augment people’s abilities and possibilities by transporting large loads and reforming multiple tasks on behalf of human users in environments
where people will have difficulty performing such tasks.
Another model was the Avatar Robot. Featuring a multifingered robotic hand, which was developed while applying technologies Honda has amassed through its research into robotics, including ASIMO and the AI-supported remote-control technology, the Avatar Robot will let users perform tasks and experience things remotely as if they are there in person.
One of Honda’s mobility products on display and designed to transcend the constraints was the SC e: Concept. The concept model of an electric motorcycle is designed to enable people to transcend time constraints by easily swapping the batteries and eliminating the waiting time for battery charging.
There were also electric products utilizing Honda Mobile Power Pack e:. Honda claims that by storing and carrying clean, renewable energy and using the energy in various places and applications, people can transcend the constraints of limited resources and achieve both environmental sustainability and freedom of mobility and daily life.

TOYOTA FT-SE, IS THIS THE NEW GR86?
The Japan Mobility Show has opened and the excitement is palpable.
This may be because automotive journalists around the world have been expectant of the re-opening of the biggest auto trade show in this part of the world since the pandemic struck.
Of course the three years of pandemic lockdown has created such a massive shift in the transportation and mobility paradigm. What used to be called the Tokyo Motor Show, the biennial event has been renamed the Japan Mobility Show to reflect the changes.
For this year, Toyota has chosen to open their display with a sleek looking electric vehicle (EV) concept, the FT-Se. This model is an EV soports car – yes an electric sports car – that may be the precursor of all other sports cars Toyota will be creating from hereon.
The FT-Se concept looks very supercar in all its angles. Sporting a huge lower grille and cooling vents near its front headlights, this concept model screams speed from
the front. The body desig ns also depicts a serious focus on balance and weight distribution similar to what most supercars have today.
From the rear, the hornlike tail light of the FT-Se totally agrees with the ducktail spoilers giving it an intense look after it passes you on the road.
What is striking is that this EV looks so much like a toy instead of an automobile, breathing life
to the introduction of Toyota President and CEO Koji Sato that Toyota’s “electric cars offer their own flavor of driving fun and automotive seasoning.”
“Of course, Toyota and GR-brand cars, like with these two models here, will also change. If we have the technology to make cars smaller, lower, and lighter, from sports cars and SUVs to pickup trucks and small vans, we
can create a diverse lineup with outstanding qualities,” explains Sato as he presented the three concepts displayed by Toyota.
Expounding on their “Find your Future” theme, Sato says “this is the multi-pathway approach to the future that Toyota envisions. Let me say once again, the future is something that we all create together.”

THIS IS HOW A LAND CRUISER WILL BE LIKE
Right! So we are now in Tokyo for the 2023 Japanese Mobility Show. This is an exciting year because Tokyo has now morphed from the old Motor Show to a broader encompassing mobility platform.
What does that mean? Well, now, not only will we see future, fantastic cars, we will see many of the gadgets and contraptions that have been born be3cause of the electric vehicle movement.
From on-board mobile phones, talking cars, self driving cars, cars with computer screens to cars that may possibly fly (I don’t know, this is Japan).
Anyway, one thing we know, Toyota’s favorite all terrain SUV, the Land Cruiser, is getting an electric upgrade.
Yes, gearheads (don’t cry petrolheads) Toyota is introducing their Toyota Land Cruiser Se, the EV version that comes with the times, electric times.
The spec sheets says the LC Se will “offer the high-torque driving performance unique to BEV’s (battery electric vehicles).”
It will also come in an elegant, stylish design complete with three-row seat for an SUV that
“caters to the world’s diverse needs.
This LC Se will be in a monocoque body that offers highly responsive handling, giving confidence in tackling rough terrains.
Toyota says the BEV quietness helps create a comfortable cabin space even when driving
urbanb areas ands other on-road situations.
But don’t get your juices up justb yet because we are looking at a display model and we do not know when this will be in mass production.
Suffice it to say this will be one of the many future models Toyota will be exhibiting at the 2023
Japanese Mobility Show. We expect more technology from Toyota in the next few days, because as it has always been said “Europe will give you the most beautiful body design, but Tokyo will deliver the latest in mobility technology.”

LEXUS BARES LF ZC AND LF ZL AT 2023 JMS
Japanese luxury car brand Lexus has formally began its journey to full electrification by 2035 as it introduced a peek at the production version of the LF CZ here at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show.
The Japan Mobility Show replaces the erstwhile Tokyo Motor Show as the region’s biggest automotive festival as it transforms into a wholistic and lifestyle centered trade show.
This LF CZ or Lexus Future Zeroemission Catalyst uses DIRECT4 allwheels drive technology that Lexus took from the RZ.
There was not much to go on about the concept model except for the batteries it will be fitted with. The LF ZC will have a “prismatic, high performance batteries” that has twice the range of current EV’s in the market today. That means it will have up to 1,000 kilometers of distance to travel on a fully charged power source.
Lexus plans to sell this nextgeneration model in 2026, with an aim to give Lexus a full electric lineup by 2026.
Chief branding officer Simon Humphries presented the new car
as a “fusion of physical and digital technologies.” The LF CZ is a strikingly styled concept sitting on an all-new electric architecture.
The body of the LF ZC is lowslung and it has a wedge shaped formula that depicts speed, power and modernity. It has wedges on its wheels that imply an intent to defy time as it shoots to the future.
The interior of the LF ZC is very high tech. The driver is presented with a yoke that uses steer-by-wire technology to handle the vehicle.
Seats are low and forward while many of its functions can be accessed by the driver from a digital pad. Passengers have their own screens for entertainment and applications.
The LF CZ uses the Arene OS system and an AI ”Butler” that can now learn the drivers preferences.
Lexus also put on display the LF ZL that also run on the Arene OS with an Interative Reality ion Motion feature using onboard sensors that create an atmosphere congruent with the driver and the surrounding
environment.
“When drivers point to objects or places of interests during their journey, the car’s display promptly delivers information along with voice guidance,” Lexus describes this technology.
The LF ZL means Lexus Future Zero—emission Luxury which is on its own self descriptive. No other information about the built of these two models have been revealed by Lexus so far.

ISUZU COMMERCIAL VEHICLES TAKE STAGE AT JAPAN MOBILITY SHOW
Isuzu displayed its electrified commercial vehicle at this year’s Japan Mobility Show — highlighting the brand’s capability in the new energy vehicle segment.
The three models that the truck manufacturer showcased at the program were the Erga EV, Giga truck and the latest iteration of the Elf.
ERGA EV
Serving as the brand’s first-ever battery-electric bus, the Isuzu Erga EV comes with improved passenger safety and environment-friendly battery electric vehicle features.
Since it is a flat-floor bus, the vehicle has a non-step layout that will ensure easy passenger access.
Aside from that, the electric motor-powered people carrier offers smooth acceleration and deceleration as well as low noise and vibration.
Meanwhile the Giga Fuel Cell displayed at the event sports a Lowdeck 8×4 rigid truck configuration that is designed for inter-city traveling.
The aforementioned model is said to be capable of covering more
than 800 kilometers and can also act as a mobile power station with its external output function. The Giga Fuel Cell displayed at the show is 11,980 millimeters (mm) long, 2,490mm wide, and 3,770mm tall with a weight of 25 tons.
A product of Isuzu’s collaboration with Honda that began in January 2020, the fuel-cell heavy-duty truck wears a fuel cell stack from the latter that is made from solid polymer.
Its hydrogen system has a filling pressure of 70 Megapascal and can hold 56 kilograms of hydrogen.
Powering the Isuzu Giga Fuel Cell is an AC synchronous electric motor that has a rated output of 320 kilowatts.
Isuzu eyes to start the demonstration testing of a prototype model on public roads before first quarter next year and is planning to launch the production model in 2027.
ELF EV
Considered as the brand’s first mass-produced BEV, the Elf EV is expected to expand Isuzu’s N-Series roster soon. The light-duty truck will be offered in numerous configurations and trims.
The Elf EV’s planned introduction to markets outside Japan will be done in stages, Isuzu said.

ORMOC 4X4 RACER CJ DOYON IS THE YOUNGEST-EVER NASFOR DRIVER OF THE YEAR
It was a tough 12 months for local 4x4 racers given the numerous competitions held this yearfrom invitational races held in different provinces, to an international qualifier held in the province La Union. Then there’s the National Association of Filipino Off-roaders (NASFOR) Extreme 4x4 Challenge 2023, the country’s premiere 4x4 competition held annually
in different provinces of the country.
The 12-leg competition which behind in January formally ends with the Philippine Tough Truck Challenge, held every first weekend of December. This year, the event was held in Pili, Camarines Sur from Dec. 1 to 3 and was hosted by the provincial government of Camarines Sur in association with the Bicol Off-road Club and the Peyra Bros. 4x4 Racing Team.
DECEMBER 2023 – JANUARY 2024
Since its formation in 1999, the NASFOR Extreme 4x4 Challenge has become the country’s most sought after 4x4 competition, with the overall winner crowned as the Golden Wheel Driver of the Year.
This year saw the coveted honor go to its youngest-ever recipient –22 yr. old Christian “CJ” Doyon of Ormoc City. After winning the Zamboanga, Dipolog, Davao, and Digos legs of the competition, CJ went on to claim the 1st runner up spot of the Philippine Tough Truck Challenge 2023 which was enough to give him the Driver of the Year award. A 7x podium finisher, his consistent performance further cemented his cred as this year’s top 4x4 racer.
CJ may be young but he’s no stranger to 4x4 competitions, having participated in his first competition when he was just 13 years old. He’s no stranger to winning, too, having won multiple awards through the years including the 2015 – 2017 Visayas NASFOR - Golden Wheel
Driver of the Year Award, the 2018 EcoTrail 4x4 Challenge, the 2019 Sinulog 4x4 Challenge, and the 2019 NASFOR Digos City Challenge.
After spending most of the pandemic years onboard his MTB, CJ decided to go back to 4x4 racing earlier this year. Riding a new race rig built by FCC Trading and 199 OffroadHouse, CJ showed no signs of rustiness, winning the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th legs of the 2023 edition of the NASFOR Extreme 4x4 Challenge in convincing fashion. After only finishing 3rd in his hometown of Ormoc, CJ went on to claim the top spot once again in 6th leg in Digos City.
With momentum on his side, CJ hopes to continue his winning streak as he prepares for the 2024 season of the NASFOR Extreme 4x4 Challenge.
“Despite the ups and downs, I’m very thankful to God that I still managed to bag the 2023 Driver of the Year Award,” confides CJ. “It has been a difficult year but I’m just glad everything turned out OK. I just want to acknowledge my mom, dad, and sister as well as my 4x4 friends - Frederick Corro, Brenn Joaquin, Jez Lim, and Alexis Lumbatan, and my co-drivers Jojo Solano and Charly Payen. We did it! Thank you so much and I share this honor with all of you!”

2023 CHAMPION CROWNED AT THRILLING SEAOIL RADICAL CHALLENGE SEASON FINALE
The SEAOIL Radical Challenge Philippines concluded the 2023 season in style at the Clark International Speedway (CIS) with plenty of on-track action up and down the grid. It had a debutant that gave the series regulars a run for their money, a rookie that stole the runner up position, and a reigning champion winning back-toback titles last 24th to 25th of November.
As the year came to a close, the race-engineered SEAOIL Extreme-97 fuel with STP additives proved to be instrumental as it provided unmatched performance for all the Radical SR1s at every race. This was especially crucial for the 4th and final round of 2023 where the championship was on the line. What was a surprise though was that title contender Joaquin “Wakeen” Garrido missed the finale and spared his closest rival Iñigo Anton from a difficult title fight to the end. But in his absence, it allowed Miguel Quiñones and newcomer Matthew Edmunds to challenge Anton’s dominance and get a shot at a podium spot.
Pushing his #33 SR1 to its limits, Anton was strong off the gates by setting the best time during Qualifying with a 1:56.177 lap and claim pole position. Quiñones couldn’t quite match his pace and was 2.810 secs adrift, yet was still fast enough to earn the multiple-time karting champion a front row start.
With Garrido out for the last round, Quiñones capitalized on the opportunity to gain substantial points and move his way up the standings. The DRQ Motorsports driver gave chase to Anton during Race 1 on Saturday in an attempt
to take the lead. But despite his best efforts, Anton didn’t crack under pressure and won with a 3.355 secs lead with Quiñones settling for 2nd place. Making an impressive debut with team R-Gas, Edmunds landed a podium finish on his very first race in 3rd place.
Race 2 later that day was another chance for Quiñones to get the jump on Anton. Much to his dismay, Anton never gave him an inch and pulled away with an even bigger gap to win by a triumphant 8.234 secs lead. Quiñones followed behind in 2nd with Edmunds once again in 3rd to complete the podium.
Every driver on the grid wanted to close the season on a high note and fought for every gap possible on the final day of racing. Race 3 would see Edmunds edge out Quiñones and take the chequered flag valiantly in 2nd place. The gentleman driver also set his best lap all weekend during the 12-lap race, demonstrating
how much he’s pushing. Anton enjoyed another dominant lights-to-flag victory, while Quiñones this time finishing 3rd.
Even if Anton already secured more than enough points to claim the title, that didn’t stop him from putting the pedal to the metal in Race 4. He drove consistent, quick laps towards his 13th consecutive win this season to earn the title as 2023 SEAOIL Radical Challenge Philippines Champion in style. Quiñones also never gave up until the chequered flag dropped and finished
8.487 secs behind in 2nd, earning enough points to end his debut year with Radical as Vice Champion.
“It’s good to be the back-to-back champion. Thank you to Radical Cars Philippines for a great year and a well-organized series,” commented newlycrowned 2023 champion Iñigo Anton. “I’d also like to thank Team MRD X Motul for being a top tier team with very skilled mechanics and race engineers. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without such a great team behind me. It was quite a chaotic
weekend because I also had to jump in to a Formula V1 in between the races but I think it was good preparation for me for my upcoming F4 race.”
Edward Cruz, Head of B2C Segment Marketing for SEAOIL Philippines, Inc. shares his thoughts on another successful season, “On behalf of the whole SEAOIL organization, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to our partners Radical Cars Philippines and all the drivers and teams on the successful culmination of this thrilling 2023 SEAOIL Radical Challenge Philippines racing season. It has been a privilege to support the fastest racing series in the country, which showcased remarkable talent and passion for motorsport. We’re honored to have fueled these races and we look forward to the next season. We also wish the best to some of our outstanding racers who will also venture out onto the global stage. Mabuhay!”

TOYOTA GAZOO RACING MADE
MY CHILDHOOD DREAMS COME TRUE
Idiscovered my passion for cars at an early age and motorsports is a huge reason behind that. I’m a huge fan of racing. I still remember watching Formula 1 races on local TV as Michael Schumacher was on his way to his seventh World Championship title. As a kid, I also followed the World Rally Championships, rooting for Petter Solberg.
So when I was invited by Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) to participate and represent Autocar Philippines at the recently concluded 2023 Toyota GAZOO Racing Vios Cup - Autocross Media Challenge, I was ecstatic. After three years, I’ll again, get to race against time in the country’s best-selling car model.
My first Vios Cup Autocross experience was back in 2019. Prior to that, I had some racing background as a navigator in the 2018 Philippine Rally in Lubao, Pampanga. But no actual race driving experience.
I was not competitive at the 2019 Vios Racing Festival.
I didn’t even get past the qualifying sessions. But I did enjoy every bit of it. It was my first time behind the wheel in a race and I had the best time of my life. My first-ever Vios Cup experience eventually opened me up to participating in actual races, and even bringing my personal car to track days. It was probably the flashback of pylons flying all over that piqued my interest to develop my driving.
Back to the 2023 Vios Cup season. Now with a bit more seat time and experience behind the wheel, I ended the first round bagging my first-ever trophy. From not qualifying years ago, to having a third place finish, I was delighted with what I had achieved.
It was not my first time to stand on a post-race podium, though. As a rally navigator and team driver in an endurance race, I got the chance to be awarded in these stints. But this time, it was my first race trophy that I earned on my own, making that third place finish at the opening round of 2023 Vios Cup Autocross a memorable one.
Months later, I was doing quite well during the practice sessions of the second round. But I was not able to deliver on the actual race. Luckily, despite my bad first runs, I was able to win the battle for third and ended the round with a podium finish once again. Making it sweeter, I was able to clock the best overall time. Quite a big bonus, I must say.
For the final round of the series, I came in with no expectations. I decided to just give my best and enjoy the final race weekend of the year. But that was until I heard that the race format was tweaked a bit for the final autocross round, eliminating the battle
for third. The fastest two racers from the qualifying will head straight to the finals. This made me anxious. The battle for third was the only reason why I got to stand on the podium in the first two rounds of the series. So with the new format, my race finish and my season overall finish are in jeopardy.
After our runs in the qualifying session, it was announced that I was one of two racers who made it to the finals. I was really happy as it was my first time in the finals. From that point, whatever outcome, it will be my best finish in the season yet. I went against Wowie Go of C! Magazine, who was leading the class overall championship standing with his smooth driving in the prior rounds. Despite having no chance for the overall championship, as Wowie secured it already with his finals appearance, I decided to give it my all and just enjoy the moment. I have nothing to lose.
After two intense runs, I was hailed as a race winner. My first-ever win. It was
surreal. From being a kid who watches races on TV, to being an actual race winner, it was such an amazing moment. I also clocked the best time of the day, which was another bonus I’m grateful for.
The race win was enough for me to be hailed as the 2023 Toyota GAZOO Racing Vios Cup Autocross ChallengeMedia Sporting Class second overall winner. My best race finish yet. As a car enthusiast who has been into cars his whole life, I will forever treasure this honor.
I’m thankful to my Titos at Autocar Philippines for allowing me to represent the title. My friends and family were cheering for me. Of course, to my girlfriend, who was with me on the track to support me in the races, thank you for the support!
I would also like to commend my fellow participants for the fun yet intense times on the track. Congratulations to us all! And lastly, utmost gratitude to Toyota Motor Philippines for this wonderful race season. It was a blast!

EXPLAINED: HONDA’S HYBRID SYSTEM
Honda has taken proactive strides in adopting electrification technologies within its vehicles, recognizing the crucial role in reducing CO2 emissions in the realm of mobility products. Among these technologies, hybridelectric systems have become a cornerstone, and Honda continues to broaden its lineup of hybridelectric models.
A hybrid-electric vehicle seamlessly integrates electric motors with an engine, optimizing fuel economy through the efficient utilization of both power sources.
The e:HEV hybrid-electric system stands as the apex of Honda’s accumulated engine and electrification technologies, incorporating numerous innovations to achieve exceptional fuel efficiency and an elevated driving experience.
In the e:HEV system, the electric motor propels the vehicle across the entire speed spectrum, with the internal combustion engine (ICE) engaged solely during high-speed cruising. This distinctive setup not only ensures high environmental performance but also introduces a level of driving enjoyment exclusive to the e:HEV, unattainable with an ICEonly system.
Maximizing Motor and Engine Performance in the Honda e:HEV Hybrid-electric System
Internal combustion engines (ICE) excel at generating high output in the high-rpm range but face challenges in producing significant torque at low speeds, particularly during initial acceleration. This characteristic leads to lower fuel economy for ICE vehicles in urban areas characterized by frequent stops and starts. In contrast, electric motors generate maximum torque at low speeds, making them ideal for efficient performance during low-speed driving. By leveraging an electric motor at low speeds and an ICE at high speeds, the hybridelectric vehicle achieves optimal efficiency and, consequently, high fuel economy.
Automakers worldwide employ various hybrid-electric systems, adapting them based on the size of
the vehicle.
The e:HEV operates as an intelligent hybrid system, amalgamating elements of both series and parallel hybrid systems. During low- to mid-speed driving, where the motor holds an advantage, it functions like a series hybrid. For high-speed cruising, where the engine is more efficient, it operates similarly to a parallel hybrid, with the engine primarily driving the vehicle. This distinctive approach sets the e:HEV apart as an intelligent hybrid system, showcasing Honda’s ingenuity.
Distinguishing Features of e:HEV Compared to Other Hybridelectric Systems
In contrast to a series-parallel hybrid system that adjusts the engine and motor drive ratio based on driving conditions, the e:HEV predominantly employs efficient motor drive for daily driving. The e:HEV operates in two modes: EV Drive Mode and Hybrid Drive Mode. This system achieves superior motor driving quality and efficiency in both modes, thanks to its straightforward design without a complex power distribution mechanism.
Components of the e:HEV System
The Honda two-motor hybrid system comprises a traction motor and a generator motor, efficiently converting engine output into electricity and providing power to
the tires. The traction motor uses a magnet free of heavy rare earth elements.
The Atkinson cycle DOHC engine ensures high-output performance with excellent thermal efficiency.
A lock-up clutch facilitates a direct connection between the engine output shaft and the wheels during high-speed cruising, maximizing the efficiency of the Atkinson cycle.
The Power Control Unit (PCU) consists of a power drive unit (PDU) and a voltage control unit (VCU), ensuring efficient operation by converting battery current to AC and boosting voltage based on traction motor requirements.
The Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) combines lithium-ion batteries with an ECU for control, efficiently storing and outputting electricity to enhance fuel efficiency and driving performance.
Simplicity and Efficiency in the Two-motor System
The two-motor hybrid-electric system, featuring a traction motor and generator motor, ensures simplicity by eliminating complex mechanisms associated with mixing battery/engine power or transmission systems. This simplicity enhances driving efficiency, capitalizing on the motor drive’s unique characteristics without frictional losses from intricate mechanisms. When the
engine generates electricity, losses are minimized by directly driving the generator motor.
e:HEV’s Intelligent Switching Between Three Modes Maintains High Efficiency
EV Drive Mode: During startup acceleration and city driving, the vehicle relies solely on the motor, powered by electricity from the battery, similar to a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV). This mode ensures smooth and highly responsive driving without using gasoline.
Hybrid Drive Mode: The vehicle runs on the motor using electricity generated by the engine, with the battery supplying power for powerful acceleration. A balanced acceleration feel is achieved by optimizing the relationship between accelerator pedal operation and engine speed increase.
Engine Drive Mode: During high-speed cruising, where less driving force is required, engine drive mode is more efficient than running the motor at high speed. Directly connecting the engine output to the driveshaft reduces power loss.
EV Drive Mode (regenerative braking mode): When decelerating or driving downhill, the traction motor generates electricity, converting kinetic energy into stored electricity in the battery. This mode enhances overall efficiency and energy regeneration.

PHRX INTRODUCES DIRT TRIAL RACING TO METRO MANILA
Wrapping up a year of rally racing filled with numerous firsts, the Philippine Rallycross Series (PHRX) brought its inaugural rounds to Metro Manila. The final two legs of the 2023 season unfolded in the heart of the metro at Parklinks in Pasig City over two consecutive weekends of dirt trial racing. Four rounds of the series took place in the emerging business district situated along C-5 Road, featuring a mixed surface of tarmac and dirt that challenged participants racing against the clock, aiming to secure championship points as the season concluded.
Over two consecutive weekends in December, PHRX kicked off the month with day and night dirt trial races at Parklinks. Becoming a hub for car-related events, the venue transformed into a racing ground for dirt racing enthusiasts, attracting both rally veterans and newcomers alike. The iconic Parklink bridge served as the service park for racers and teams.
The track layout for both weekends utilized the paved roads of the development for the tarmac
part of the races. Racers gained speed on the grippiest part of the course, with the concrete section leading to a rapid entry into the dirt section laid out in one of the vacant lots of Parklinks. The dirt segment of the course featured tight turns, challenging racers to navigate as swiftly as possible with minimal traction. The dirt section then led to another concrete portion, including a tight u-turn section.
The tight mixed paved and
tarmac course for the Manila legs of the PHRX 2023 season provided challenging yet exhilarating rounds for participants. Holding PHRX races in the metro attracted more rally racing enthusiasts to witness the action and served as a car meet, showcasing an impressive lineup of cars at the venue.
“We are honored to be trusted by another venue partner in the series and are really happy to host our races in Metro Manila,” shared
PHRX organizer Ronnie Trinidad.
Before its Metro Manila races, PHRX held events in Noveleta, Cavite, Pradera Verde in Lubao, Pampanga, New Clark City in Clark, Pampanga, and Driftwoods in Indang, Cavite. Earlier this year, PHRX also partnered with the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) and San Jose, Tarlac LGU for its two-round full rally 2023 Tarlac Rally.
“Hopefully, more Metro Manila rounds will be added to the 2024 calendar to allow more people to watch the races. Reviving the love for the beloved rally racing has been the thrust of PHRX, and with more people getting to know the sport, it will fuel PHRX to do more,” added Trinidad.
In addition to its first Metro Manila leg this December, PHRX also introduced its first full rally series in this year’s dirt trial season, the Tarlac Rally. This launched PHRX’s newest championship series - the 2023 Rally Master, combining points from the 2023 Philippine Rallycross Series and 2023 Tarlac Rally. The overall champion will be crowned the first-ever Rally Master.
