For some its love month, for others it’s just February. But one thing’s for sure, everyone, whether they admit it or not is on the constant search for that special someone.
In this issue, we introduce you to The One. No, not a person, MG’s newest offering, and it might just be that One you’ve been searching for.
As always, we feature the newest cars that have just entered the local market. One of the first cars to launch in 2024 is the BMW i4 eDrive35. GWM teased this in 2023, but is finally available, their macho TANK 300. Mitsubishi and pick-up fans rejoice!, the bigger and tougher Triton is here, and great news for those of you whose wives won’t let you get that Jimny because it was too small.. and only had three doors, the 5-door is finally here!
We’ve got the latest industry news as always, Our EIC Ira Panganiban was recently at the Singapore Motor Show and gives us a rundown on the cars which got his attention and we also got to take the All-New Honda CR-V variants for a drive out of town.
We here at Autocar Philippines love our cars, and like you, the only exes we fondly think about are the cars from our past, right?
And on that note, we give you our monthly commitment, our February issue… because we have no commitment issues. Promise.

THE LATEST CARS THIS MONTH
GWM Tank 300
Following its local preview in October 2023, GWM officially launched the GWM Tank 300. Brute as it looks, GWM’s latest SUV promises outstanding performance courtesy of its ladder-frame chassis construction. The all-new Tank 300 has been designed from the ground-up to take on the most severe trails that would leave other crossovers stranded.
The Tank 300 boasts 33-degree approach angle and 34-degree departure angle thanks to its short overhangs, making it capable on steep ascents and descents. More on its off-roading capabilities, it also has a 224mm ground clearance and 700mm wading depth, perfect for river crossing duties. The Tank 300 also has front and rear differential locks, AllTerrain Control System with eight modes, Crawl Control, and the segmentfirst Tank Turn, which controls rear braking during turns to affect turning radius.
Powering the Tank 300 is a turbocharged 2.0-liter, twin-cam, 16-valve, inline-four cylinder gasoline engine that is rated to output 217 horsepower and 380 Nm of torque. Delivering all these numbers to the wheels is a German ZF 8-speed automatic transmission.
As robust as its exterior and off-roading performance, the GWM Tank 300 features a premium interior that matches any modern SUVs today. It has nappa leather upholstery as standard which is usually seen in high-end luxury models.

Mitsubishi Triton
Bidding farewell to the Strada nameplate, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation has officially launched the latest generation Mitsubishi Triton in the country. It follows the announcement from the company during its 60th anniversary celebration in the country. The latest pickup truck from the threediamond auto brand features a totally overhauled model over its predecessor, from the exterior, interior, and powerplant.
The all-new Triton features the latest iteration of the brand’s Dynamic Shield front fascia design that is highlighted by its split LED headlight and L-shaped DRLs. The all-new Triton features an overall boxy exterior design that is further highlighted by its T-shaped tail lights.
Stepping inside the cabin, the Triton’s interior is designed using the Horizontal Axis concept which uses horizontallythemed and strong shapes throughout the dash to allow drivers to easily see changes while driving. Its ergonomics have been given attention by designing every detail on the dash to have optimum sensitivity, even allowing access while wearing gloves.
It may be utilizing the same 4N15 inline-four cylinder turbocharged diesel mill, but it has undergone a revamped making it cleaner yet more powerful over the one that powered
the previous model. The latest iteration of the 4N15 now outputs 200 PS and 470 Nm of torque. This potent mill is partnered to either a six-speed automatic transmission or sixspeed manual shift-by-wire transmission. 4WD variants come equipped with Mitsubishi’s very own Super Select 4WD-II and Easy Select 4WD systems.

Suzuki Jimny 5-door
It can be considered as one of the most anticipated models since it broke the internet last year, when it was teased that the model is actually coming to the Philippine shores. Ending all the wait, Suzuki Philippines officially launched the new Suzuki Jimny 5-door in the country on January 25, 2024.
Sharing most attributes with its equally sought-after 3-door brethren, the latest Jimny model was able to cleanly translate its mini off-roader to a practical 5-door version. The iconic fourth generation Jimny squarish exterior body now features rear passenger doors for better second-row access.
Inside, the Jimny 5-door shares the same cockpit layout with its 3-door counterpart. Biggest change in the interior lies in the back with its rear seat having undergone enhancements, featuring thicker seat cushions to provide better seating posture and comfortably accommodate two adults. Positioned directly above the rear passengers, the rear seat lamp ensures improved lighting, while the rear seat power window switches are conveniently located in both the rear doors and the front console box for easy control from both rows.
Aside from better rear passenger comfort, the Jimny
5-door also features expanded luggage area thanks to its extended wheelbase. Though it misses the luggage box of its 3-door brethren, the 5-door Jimny now offers up 211-liter luggage capacity, which can even be increased with the rear seatback folded flat.
The Jimny 5-door features the same 1.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine found in the 3-door model. With a 340 mm longer wheelbase than the 3-door Jimny, it maintains crucial off-roading features like the ALLGRIP PRO, a sturdy ladder frame, exceptional approach, breakover, and departure angles, 3-link rigid axle suspension with coil spring and part-time 4WD with low-range transfer gear.

Toyota manufacturing plant sources 100% green energy
In its bid towards carbon neutrality, the leading mobility company and automotive manufacturer, Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP), has signed a Retail Supply Contract (RSC) with a local supplier to provide greenbacked electricity for its manufacturing operations.
Such a move allows TMP to achieve 100% Renewable Energy (RE) ratio by supplying approximately 90% of the Company’s total electricity requirement, complementing the rest of RE sourced onsite from an existing 1.46- megawatt rooftop solar power system.
Team (Philippines)
Energy Corporation – the retail electricity supplier –will commence its supply to TMP on December 26, 2023. Based on the RSC, every megawatt hour will be backed by an International Renewable Energy Certificate or I-REC(E), which verifies its sourcing from a domestic RE plant.
“This energy transition
will neutralize TMP’s Scope 2 Emissions, particularly the indirect carbon dioxide emissions from purchased electricity for manufacturing operations,”
TMP president Atsuhiro Okamoto remarked.
“Such is a significant milestone for TMP and its mission to address climate change, making its automotive manufacturing plant in Santa Rosa City, Laguna the front-runner and early achiever of 100% RE ratio target for Toyota in the ASEAN region.”
Until year 2035, TMP is geared towards decarbonizing the rest of its energy sources for manufacturing, particularly for petrol-type generators, ovens and boilers for painting processes.
In 2020, Global Toyota set its target for all its manufacturing plants to be carbon-neutral by 2035 under the Company’s overall Net Zero commitment, better known as the Toyota
Environmental Challenge (TEC) 2050.
LIFE CYCLE ACTION
In pursuing carbon neutrality, Toyota not only sets its eyes on expanding options of accessible electrified vehicles for diversified customers but also on reducing the environmental impact of the automotive industry’s value chain through appropriate life cycle actions. Toyota actively engages its supply chain, logistics and dealer networks in decarbonization.
Doing their part in tackling the TEC 2050 in
the Philippines, local Toyota suppliers and dealers have followed TMP’s lead and implemented energy efficiency and RE initiatives. To date, several companies also have undertakings to achieve 100% RE ratio, either by investing in onsite solar power facility and or procuring RE through the Philippine government’s Green Energy Option Program or GEOP. These companies include Denso Ten Philippines Corporation, Hino Motors Philippines Corporation, Denso Philippines Corporation, and International Wiring
Systems Philippines for suppliers, as well as Toyota Global City, Toyota Mabolo City, and Toyota Pasong Tamo for dealers.
In terms of compliance with strict environmental standards, Toyota suppliers and all established Toyota dealers nationwide (including Lexus Manila) are certified under ISO 14001, as part of Toyota environmental management systems’ (Toyota Green Purchasing Guidelines and Asia Pacific Eco-Dealership Program) mandates TMP is the distributor of Toyota and Lexus vehicles in the Philippines and the largest manufacturer of local models, presently the Vios and Innova.
The Company is also spearheading its new Completely Knocked Down (CKD) model, the forthcoming Toyota IMV 0 (Zero) or “Next Generation Tamaraw,” the prototypes of which were unveiled to the public in August 2023.

Cleanfuel Inaugurates Newest Retail Station in A. Bonifacio, Quezon City
Among the 16 cities (and one municipality) that comprise Metro Manila, the largest—by a wide margin—is Quezon City. With a total area of 161.12 square kilometers, it is just over three times the size of the second largest city, Caloocan, which occupies only 53.33 square kilometers.
To put that in another perspective, Quezon City alone accounts for 25.23% of Metro Manila’s 638.55 square kilometer total land area. Being the largest city in Metro Manila, Quezon City is a hotbed for Cleanfuel’s rapid expansion, and the recent opening of their latest service station in Bgy. San Jose, La Loma, brings the tally of Cleanfuel’s presence in the city to a respectable 20
stations.
Strategically located along A. Bonifacio Ave (northbound), Bgy. San Jose, La Loma, Quezon City, the newest Cleanfuel station in the country sets itself apart with its new, contemporary look. The open architecture lends an industrial appeal to the station, which complements the area’s long-established reputation as a source of parts for commercial trucks, related machineries and heavy equipment.
It is located along a vital route for trucks headed north via the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX).
With this in mind, Cleanfuel A. Bonifacio—with its world-class quality fuel and highly competitive, affordable fuel prices— aspires to be the preferred
fuel stop of commercial vehicles before entering NLEX, where fuel prices tend to be significantly higher.
Cleanfuel A. Bonifacio’s open layout makes it very convenient even for container trucks and other Class-3 vehicles to enter and exit the station with minimum effort. While Cleanfuel A. Bonifacio was designed to accommodate large trucks; locals and travelers in their private vehicles are welcome to refuel here use Cleanfuel’s famous hotel-quality airconditioned restrooms.
As the purveyor of Quality Fuel for Less, Cleanfuel is set to provide reliable and affordable fuel options—High Grade Diesel, Clean 91, and Premium 95—ensuring that residents and businesses in the area have access to
clean, high-quality fuels and exceptional service.
“We are happy to open our newest retail station in A. Bonifacio in Quezon City that will cater largely to the commercial vehicles and private motorists going Northbound,” said Atty. Jesus “Bong” Suntay, president and CEO of Cleanfuel.
“As an independent fuel player with goals of being a top-of-mind choice for savvy motorists, Cleanfuel is committed to delivering top-notch fuels that are efficient, clean-burning, and meet the highest industry standards,” shared Atty. Suntay.
Apart from the physical Cleanfuel VIP card, frequent Cleanfuel customers can now download the Cleanfuel Rewards App from
both Apple App store and Google Play store to electronically stay updated on their rewards and other perks. One extremely useful function of the Cleanfuel app is the station locator, which is a tremendous help if you’re in an unfamiliar location and want to know if there is a Cleanfuel station around.
Cleanfuel extends its invitation to the residents and businesses in the A. Bonifacio/ La Loma vicinity to its newest station in the country and experience firsthand how Cleanfuel sets itself apart from the rest. A company that values community and growth, Cleanfuel looks forward to becoming a trusted partner for businesses, motorists and truckers who take A. Bonifacio Avenue as part of their regular route.

“Ford Philippines is confirming the launch of the Ford Bronco this year. It will soon be open for reservation exclusively via the Ford online reservation portal at www.ford. com.ph, and will be supported by all Ford dealers nationwide. FordPH receives awards for Ford Territory, community programs
Ford Philippines is ending the year on a high note as it received awards for the NextGeneration Ford Territory and its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs from prestigious media-led award-giving bodies.
The Next-Gen Territory was named Best Compact Crossover in the 19th Annual C! Awards by C! Magazine. According to C! Magazine, the Next-Gen Territory “has evolved exponentially to become a properly refined and matured compact crossover.”
The Ford Territory has remained one of the most successful Ford vehicles sold in the Philippines. In October, the NextGen Territory has sold over 5,000 units five months after its launch in April. This brought Ford Territory’s overall sales to over 25,000 units since its launch in August 2020, a testament to
its sustained popularity and appeal among firsttime car buyers, young professionals, and small families who are looking for a smart, safe and stylish SUV.
Platinum Awards for social responsibility
Aside from great vehicles, Ford also prides itself with a strong lineup of corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs that impact the
lives of many beneficiaries and communities.
Ford’s Operation Better World (Building Healthy Communities) and Auto Mechanic Scholarship Program received Platinum Awards under the Community Development and Education and Training categories, respectively, in the 6th Driven to Serve Awards by the Society of Philippine Motoring Journalists
(SPMJ). The Driven to Serve Awards honors automotive companies and their commitment to make a difference in the communities they serve through various CSR programs. Ford Philippines has been a consistent award recipient for the past six years.
Building Healthy Communities is a health-focused program promoting self-sufficiency
and increased health awareness through neighborhood educational programs, basic health services, and medical and dental services to partner communities.
Meanwhile, since 2016, Ford’s Auto Mechanic Scholarship Program has supported over 130 students who completed the 15-month automotive technician program at the Don Bosco Technical Institute-Technical Vocational and Education and Training (TVET) Center in Makati City. Thirty scholars are expected to graduate in 2023, with over 70% of the graduates now employed.
“ We thank C! Magazine and the SPMJ for recognizing our vehicles and CSR programs and the impact they continue to make to our customers and communities. We are inspired to deliver value to our stakeholders in the many years to come,” said Mike Breen, managing director, Ford Philippines.

The fleet shall be utilized particularly for the said office’s pioneering project, the Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated KioskS (STARBOOKS), and its award-winning broadcast platform, DOSTv: Science for the People.
Developed back in 2011, STARBOOKS is a standalone pod which serves as an interactive information hub with resources related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Despite STARBOOKS being designed to be transportable though, deployment poses some challenges. This is due to the different types of terrain and unpredictable road conditions across the country. Similarly, for the DOSTv production team who travels vast distances visiting and covering farflung cities.
HMPH President, Mr. Dong Wook Lee noted, “We are glad to have been given the opportunity to contribute towards the causes of STARBOOKS and DOSTv. Their missions closely resonate with ours. As we too constantly find ways on becoming more present in the lives of our customers and communities which we are a part of. Rest assured that our Hyundai Staria shall be a reliable steed on your journeys.”
The Hyundai Staria puts forward the future of van mobility when it comes to seat amenities and differentiated design. Space and comfort are prioritized with rear safety and flexibility being present across all its variants.
An official turnover ceremony was held at the DOST Compound last December 14, 2023. Wherein Mr. Lee, together with HMPH Managing Director, Mr. Cecil Capacete, were welcomed by DOST Secretary, Dr. Renato Solidum Jr., DOST
Undersecretary, Ms. Maridon Sahagun as well as DOST-STII Director, Mr. Richard Burgos.
“We, at DOST acknowledge Hyundai not just as a provider of mobility solutions but also as a global technology company. There is a shared desire to delve into broader collaboration avenues that can positively impact the Filipino population. DOST is keen on exploring additional areas where the partnership can yield further benefits. The intention is to forge a multifaceted collaboration that extends beyond mobility solutions, aiming for a comprehensive partnership that aligns with the evolving needs and aspirations of Filipino society,” according to DOST Secretary, Dr. Solidum. His Excellency Sanghwa Lee Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Philippines, was in attendance as well. He shared a special message, “I commend
the Hyundai Motor team’s Environmental, Social, and Governance initiatives in the Philippines. It is encouraging that the DOST enjoys the strong support of national government. This awareness aligns well with our government’s focus on science, technology, and innovation. I am confident that such alignment will be a driving force in deepening our countries’ relationship as we approach the anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2024”.
Next year marks the 75th Anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the Philippines and South Korea. Hyundai Motor Philippines has initiatives lined up in commemoration of the momentous occasion and shall be utilizing it as a channel to connect even further with its Filipino customers.

BSB Junrose adds Schaeffler TruPower to their lineup
BSB Junrose Corporation has welcomed another significant addition to its powerhouse lineup of global parts supplies brands it distributes to the local market. Schaeffler TruPower is a sub-brand of German automotive supplies manufacturer Schaeffler that has built its impeccable reputation in the global industry for over 75 years now.
The formal welcome coincided with the 55th year celebration of BSB Junrose, which has been the biggest local distributor of Schaeffler for many years now.
Schaeffler TruPower is initially bringing its Motorcycle Lubricant to BSB Junrose stores nationwide.
“The Schaeffler TruPower 10W-40 SemiSynthetic Motorcycle Lubricant is formulated to bring about advance performance,” said Micah Shepard, Schaeffler President for Automotive Aftermarket, AsiaPacific and President in Southeast Asia/ Pacific Region. “Aligned with the Schaeffler premium brand, Schaeffler TruPower Lubricants commit longer life and maintained performance.”
Schaeffler TruPower advantage
Shepard emphasized the advantage of Schaeffler being a major supplier of bearings to global motorcycle manufacturers—from Harley-Davidson to Honda, Yamaha, and others.
“Schaeffler TruPower has formulated and tested its lubricants to be optimized with our bearings, engine, and transmission products. That is why internal friction is significantly reduced, bringing about optimum motorcycle performance and lifespan,” he explained.
Moreover, Shepard
also underlined the importance of having a reliable distributor like BSB Junrose sharing proper know how to retailers.
“Motorcycle owners may not always be familiar with maintenance products and supplies. It is always advisable for them to get guidance from a trusted retail shop manned by expert mechanics and people who have been trained to share technical guidance.”
“And of course, regular oil replacement or lubrication cycle should be observed. It is important to follow the regular maintenance schedule. Change filter and apply lubrication when necessary to help protect and prolong life of your vehicle,” Shepard added.
Schaeffler and Schaeffler
TruPower
Schaeffler TruPower was first launched in India in 2020 before it was introduced in the Asia-Pacific. Aside from lubricants, the sub-brand also plans to grow its range
to other product lines.
According to Shepard, Schaeffler TruPower would soon expand its lineup of distributed products by BSB Junrose.
Newly installed BSB Junrose President Ian Bangayan expressed gratitude upon formally welcoming Schaeffler TruPower to the company’s brand and product lineup. “We are happy to keep a strong business relationship with Schaeffler. The addition of Schaeffler TruPower extends that partnership
that we look forward to maintain and further strengthen in more years to come. Our customers will surely benefit more from this,” he said.
Growing motorcycle market
Schaeffler TruPower asserts that the Philippines is among its most important markets in the region. Based on latest data from the Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association (MDPPA), about 1.56
million motorcycles and scooters were sold in the country in 2022. That number is projected to increase to about 1.6 million this year.
The Philippines is currently ranked No. 2 in terms of highest annual sales of two-wheeled vehicles among ASEAN countries. According to MDPPA, Thailand is the No. 1 country with the highest motorcycle sales. Trailing behind the Philippines are Singapore and Malaysia (based on rankings generated in 2021).

MY 7 BEST CARS AT THE SINGAPORE MOTOR SHOW
The doors of the Singapore Motorshow 2024 swung open on January 11, and we were fortunate to witness this spectacular event. Despite entering its eighth year, one participant revealed that the show is already grappling with car dealers contending with low stocks.
Hosted at the Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre from January 11 to January 14, this eagerly awaited exhibition coincided with a recent drop in Singapore’s certificate of entitlement (COE) premiums, resulting in a decline in car prices. However, as this is a Singaporean issue, we won’t delve into the specifics.
This year’s exhibition hall also witnessed a more modest booth setup from exhibitors. Some notable absentees from the 2023 event included Alpine, Lotus, Peugeot, Skoda, and Volkswagen.
Despite these challenges, the show continues to present intriguing cars and concept models. The exhibitors’ booths, though less elaborate, still showcase exciting highlights. A noteworthy feature was the signature car stunt show featuring renowned stunt driver Russ Swift driving a lineup of Subarus.
We were graciously invited by Subaru Motor Image to witness the event. Aside from the launches of dealerships owned by Glenn Tan of Tan Chong Industries Limited, Nissan, and Subaru, we took a close look at the cars on display.

MERCEDES-BENZ CONCEPT EQG
Making its Southeast Asian debut, this concept offers a sneak peek at the upcoming all-electric production version of the iconic G-class off-roader, set to be unveiled later in 2024.
SUZUKI JIMNY 5-DOOR
Suzuki’s star attraction is the five-door version of the Jimny, maintaining its retro-styled off-roader appeal with an extended wheelbase.
KIA EV9
The official launch of the Kia EV9, a six-seater electric SUV with a robust yet sleek appearance, optional rotating second-row seats, and an impressive 512km driving range on a single charge.
HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 N
An electric powerhouse with 650hp, the Ioniq 5 N is an amped-up version of the reigning Straits Times Car of the Year, expected to hit the market in the second half of 2024.
MG CYBERSTER
A halo model for the MG brand, signaling a shift beyond mass-market models, the Cyberster is a seductive sports car showcased alongside other MG offerings, featuring left-hand-drive production models.
MINI ACEMAN CONCEPT
Providing a glimpse into Mini’s future design language, the Aceman Concept features flat and geometric lines, departing from the curvier look seen in many of the brand’s models.
VOLVO EX30
As the smallest electric SUV in Volvo’s range, the EX30 boasts a dedicated EV platform and a distinctive interior architecture, setting it apart from other Volvo EV models.

ALL-NEW HONDA CR-V ICE TURBO OR HYBRID?
HONDA CR-V MEDIA DRIVE TO SUBIC
While the drive for automotive sustainability and climate neutrality has been abuzz with new EVs and hybrids, it’s interesting to note that Honda came out with the CR-Z, a sporty 2-door mild hybrid long before they became trendy. A feat in fact that our local Department of Energy has been given a Civic Hybrid to try out a few years ago.
Honda’s shift to electrification has always been a game plan. It may not seem as swift and booming now like other car brands for the Philippines versus other Asian countries, but Honda has always aimed to custom-fit their hybrids for our roads and landscape. Thus the launch of the hybrid All-New CR-V.
ALL WHEEL DRIVE
A drive to Bataan and Subic should test the endurance and ability of the hybrid All-New CR-V. Myself and my colleagues were able to try out all three variants of the All-New CR-V, the V CVT Turbo FWD, the VX Turbo CVT AWD and the RS e-HEV. Our start off point was at Okada and the first variant we got to drive was the VX Turbo CVT AWD. My car mates and I loaded up our gear and our route was through NAIAX and onto NLEX via Skyway 3.
The AWD variant performed as well as expected, especially since lanes were not ridden with traffic on the elevated highway. Honda SENSING proved useful as we were able to set our adaptive cruise control to the 60kph speed limit and distance to the vehicle up front. This made cruising
much easier as the CR-V took care of braking if the vehicle ahead slowed down.
Owners of the first and second generation CR-V will likely feel a close affinity to this variant as they too were equipped with all-wheel drive. Honda stays faithful to what CR-V stands for, the “Comfortable, Runabout Vehicle”, still offering comfort, generous space and amenities in all three variants.
Under the hood is a Euro 4 compliant turbo-charged DOHC DI VTEC 1.5L 4-cylinder 16-valve gasoline engine which puts out 190Ps at 6000 rpms with 240Nm of torque between 1700-5000 rpms, mated to a CVT that sends power to Honda’s Real Time All-Wheel Drive system. This variant is equipped with an Econ mode button which we used for most
of the drive as the steady speeds on the expressway didn’t really need instant response even on overtakes.
On SCTEX, at the exit off Dinalupihan, we hit the two lane country roads and made our way to Bataan. The CR-V’s AWD made short work of getting around sly jeepneys and tricycles. Switching off the Econ mode made the sedate crossover SUV more aggressive and power delivery was almost instant with the turbo good to go at low RPMs, making power readily available.
Rancho Bernardo Luxury Villas and Resort’s expansive property, with Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar and the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant not far from the frame, made for a picturesque backdrop for photos of the hybrid All-New CR-V with mates for socials.

ROAD TRIP FEBRUARY 2024 AUTOCAR.COM.PH 41
FRONT WHEEL DRIVE
Honda’s base CR-V variant, the V Turbo CVT, is approximately the same as the AWD in most aspects, but was front-wheel drive. The roads leading out from Bagac, Bataan and coming into Subic (SBMA) were still two lane roads, but the turns were tighter and since there were less public vehicles on this route, we opted to drive a bit faster than we did before lunch. Quite surprising was the response and sharp handling this base variant showed. For a front wheel drive, it had no problems keeping up with the convoy of Hybrid and AWD variants. The final stop was the Kamana Sanctuary Spa Resort, a majestic place that is postcard worthy.
HYBRID
We finally got to drive the RS e:HEV variant on the stretch from SBMA back to Okada. The top of line variant as expected was well equipped and did not disappoint on the road. Even as the US gets an AWD version on the e:HEV, our locally available hybrid is FWD only. But for Philippine conditions this is more than enough.
Under the e:HEV’s hood is a Euro
4 compliant VTEC 4-cylinder
16-valve 2.0L DOHC DI Atkinson Engine which puts out 148Ps at 6100 rpms with 183 Nm of torque at 4500 rpms, this is mated to the Honda’s dual motor hybrid system, with the drive motor putting out 184Ps between 5000-8000rpms with 335 Nm of torque between 0-2000rpms. The electric motor runs off a 1.06kWh battery and can theoretically drive it electric roughly 54 kilometers. This of course all depends on road conditions and charge state. One should keep in mind that the CR-V will switch from battery power, to gas and both as a matter of course while one goes about a daily drive. A distance on full electric must not be anticipated. The drive mode you select will also determine how the vehicle will switch between these power sources.
The roads coming out from Kamana and onto SBMA are nicely paved which allows a feel for the handling and power delivery of the RS e:HEV. Predictably, the seamless switching from battery and gasoline engine was completely unobtrusive and made the drive back to Manila enjoyable.
The All-New CR-V is a
fun crossover SUV, not a cumbersome drive as its mighty looks present. It is easily manageable in the city and tight mall parking spaces. Most traffic noise is blocked out and generous interior space is never a cooped- up feeling. Both 2WD and AWD variants are 7-seaters while the RS e:HEV is a 5-seater, something to consider should there be a need for more than 4 or 5 passengers.
All variants are equipped with a 9” touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Carplay
and Android Auto. The V and VX variants are equipped with 8 speakers and the RS has a 12-speaker Bose speaker system. Cabin comfort is upped by dual and tri-zone air conditioning. There’s a wireless 15W charging pad in the center console of the dash and USB A and C ports next to that and two USB C charging ports for the second row occupants and two 12V sockets, one up front and one in the cargo area.
All three variants do well on the open road, handling, comfort,
42 AUTOCAR.COM.PH FEBRUARY 2024
cabin space and luggage room, of course depending on whether you have 3rd row occupants in the V Turbo CVT 2WD and AWD variants. All variants are equipped with Honda SENSING, giving you peace of mind on the road that the CR-V itself is actively looking out for your safety.
The V Turbo CVT is priced at Php2,100,000, the VX Turbo CVT AWD is Php2,280,000 and the RS e:HEV E-CVT is priced at Php2,590,000.
Unanimously, our favorite was the V Turbo CVT or base variant. Without the additional burden and weight of AWD drive system, the power delivery was just a bit quicker in the V than the VX. All variants did well on the twisties. The rear multi-link suspension allowed the CR-V to eat up the tight curves without the rear getting away from you. Also, it was the most affordable of the lot. Of course the e:HEV takes the cake with overall features–performance, an awesome sounding audio system and Honda CONNECT. If one is on the lookout for good value, seats 7, economical but offers up performance, then 2WD V Turbo CVT should be it.

NAVIGATING THE FUTURE
Words By Anjo Perez
THE RISE OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES
IN THE PHILIPPINES
The automotive landscape in the Philippines has witnessed a dynamic evolution over the past decade, marked by a wave of new car brands from China and Europe. This influx has injected vigor and innovation into the industry, notably with the advent of full-sized electric vehicles (EVs). Touted as cleaner and more environmentally friendly alternatives, EVs boast zero carbon dioxide emissions and significantly reduced sound pollution. However, as the debate over their environmental impact continues, it’s imperative to assess their immediate implications, particularly in our densely populated cities.
Metro Manila, a bustling metropolis housing nearly 14.7 million residents, has been acutely affected by pollution, exacerbated during the pandemic lockdowns from 2020 to 2022. To reclaim better air quality in mega-cities like ours, a widespread transition from Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles to EVs is imperative. This shift necessitates broad adoption in mass transportation, commercial fleets, and private ownership. Fortunately, the path forward is clearer with the enactment of the government’s EVIDA law, and the recognition of health as a measure of wealth has never been more pronounced. Clean air is a fundamental right we all deserve, compelling car brands to step up by offering vehicles that enhance our quality of life. So, what sets apart a successful car brand in the Philippines?
At the core of a car brand lies its product offering. It must feature well-equipped models that are competitive in their respective classes, providing buyers with exceptional value
for their money. The timeliness of the product offering is equally crucial. As mentioned earlier, there exists a golden opportunity for new car brands to introduce affordable and reliable EVs. While Japanese, Korean, and European manufacturers have initiated their foray into the EV market, critical mass has yet to be achieved. Thus, offering an affordable and dependable EV could be a gamechanger for any brand.
Beyond product excellence, brand sustainability emerges as paramount. Brands must exhibit loyalty to their customers by consistently addressing their needs, particularly in terms of after-sales ownership experience. This entails ensuring the availability of spare parts, minimizing vehicle downtime through efficient maintenance, and maintaining open communication with clients. If after-sales service falls short of excellence, brands should reconsider their market entry strategy. A clear and consistent plan for sustained growth must be effectively communicated.
The benchmark for dealership capability is a 4S dealership: Sales, Service, Spare parts, and Survey. Each dealership should encompass all these components to offer a comprehensive customer experience.
The quickest route to tarnishing a brand in any market is through a breach of customer trust. Selling substandard products or providing inadequate service erodes trust and adversely impacts resale value. Neglecting to address customer concerns, especially significant ones, can be equally detrimental. Ultimately, the ownership experience defines a brand’s value, with customers serving as the ultimate arbiters.
Why emphasize EVs as a prime example of a product that can propel brands to success? Because they epitomize the 4S approach for brands entering or operating in the Philippine market. The first brand to offer a genuinely appealing EV is poised to capture a significant share of the market. Today’s consumers prioritize health
over features like resale value and air conditioning. To succeed, a car brand must provide advanced technology, safety, and an enhanced quality of life. It must offer a reliable vehicle with abundant parts and exceptional customer service, ensuring worry-free ownership that benefits all stakeholders and enhances overall well-being.
The writing is on the wall; change must be embraced wholeheartedly. Major brands have already committed to full EV lineups by 2050, and Europe aims to go allelectric by 2030. The opportune moment to thrive or dominate the Philippine car market is now. Offering an affordable EV while addressing infrastructure gaps and maximizing EVIDA law incentives is key. However, it’s essential to ensure that customers receive clear, timely, and genuine responses to their service-related inquiries when they visit your dealership. Consistent communication and an authentic commitment to meeting customer needs are the keys to success for car brands in the Philippines.

Using facial recognition technology, the system remembers individual driver preferences, automatically restoring over 250 stored settings, including vehicle, audio, and climate control preferences. The system can store settings for up to six different users, accommodating various drivers and guests.
Enhanced Safety Features
Safety is paramount in the Mazda CX-60, equipped with a range of i-Activsense driver assistance systems designed to ensure the safety of both occupants and other road users, including pedestrians.

STREET & SHORT RIDER-FRIENDLY TRIUMPH SPEED TWIN 900
Words by Ivy Sison
y affair with Triumph Motorcycles began in 2019 when I made the leap from my Vespa scooter to a more substantial bike. The Triumph Bobber was my first crush, and the connection was instant. Soon after, I found myself irresistibly drawn to the allure of the Speed Twin 1200, sealing my love affair with the brand. Triumph, the UK’s leading motorcycle manufacturer, has carved a niche with its retro style and heritage design, solidifying its place as one of my top choices in the motorcycle world.
MRecently, I had the pleasure of taking the 2023 Speed Twin 900 for a spin. Having previously owned the 1200, I was eager to explore what this model had to offer, especially with its smaller engine size. And let me tell you, it surpassed all my expectations.
Formerly known as the Street Twin, the 2023 Speed Twin 900 shares similarities with its larger sibling in terms of handling and riding style. With a seat height that’s 40mm lower—1200 at 805mm and 900 at 765mm—both my feet comfortably reach the ground. This lower seat height facilitates effortless maneuvering in and out of parking lots, a feature I particularly appreciate as a rider standing at five feet, three inches tall. Seat height plays a pivotal role for me when selecting a bike.
Following seat height, I evaluate the bike’s weight. Interestingly, both the 1200 and 900 weigh in at 216kg. However, the 900 feels lighter, likely due to its nimble maneuverability while seated. The lightweight frame adds to the bike’s overall comfort and ease of handling.
On the highway, the 900 performed admirably. Transitioning through gears from first to fifth was seamless, delivering ample power without a hint of stalling. The acceleration was smooth, offering generous torque right from idle, and the bike smoothly traversed its rev range, tapering off around 7000 rpm.
A standout feature is the exhaust note emanating from its paralleltwin engine. The 900 produces an unmistakably British sound that commands attention. Personally, the symphony of a motorcycle’s engine significantly influences my riding experience. The audible growl upon throttle application confirms the sensation of freedom and exhilaration.
Moreover, the 900 boasts intuitive and user-friendly features. The analog speedometer paired with
a small LCD multi-functional display provides trip mileage, a clock, and fuel consumption data. Switching between road or rain riding modes is effortless, offering adaptability for diverse conditions. All these functions are easily accessible with a touch of the info button on the left-hand cluster.
Without a doubt, the 2023 Triumph Speed Twin 900 shines as an exceptional choice for riders of all stripes. With its sleek design, potent performance, and comfortable features, this bike can serve as a perfect daily commuter or a dependable companion for long-distance journeys.
Priced at P715,000.00, this stunning bike is available at Triumph Motorcycle Philippines, conveniently located on Ortigas Avenue, San Juan.
