Editorial The JIMS 2013 event has drawn to a close but hopefully the enthusiasm it garnered will help see us through to the end of this year. While so many exciting launches were on display at the event, the positive sentiment (despite the warnings over stunted growth thanks in large part to the strikes during the last few months) may have distracted Gautengers briefly from the eToll saga that drags on. It also brought serious issues to the fore and allowed a great platform for discussion and learning. The question is, how will the SA industry use this insight to move forward?

The shows will screen before and after popular programmes such as Top Gear, Counting Cars and Jesse James Austin Garage, which cumulatively reach a viewership of over 5 million people. It is anchored by Michael Bender, Gugu Zulu – a racing champion and popular TV presenter – and former Miss SA finalist and model Sian Schlebusch. The programme promises to engage viewers with informative content, interaction between the presenters and sponsor giveaways.

Don’t neglect mobile strategy M

obile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, are changing the way consumers shop for their vehicles, making it critical for dealers to invest in mobile websites and mobile ads. That’s the key message that was conveyed by Edmunds.com, car shopping and automotive information experts, at the 15th Digital Dealer Conference & Exposition in Las Vegas, US. The company presented the following statistics for the United States: • There are an estimated 137.5 million smartphone users in the US at present, and that number is expected to jump almost 40% by 2016. • Currently 35% of Edmunds.com site traffic originates from mobile devices, up from about five percent of site traffic in 2010. • A recent study found that mobile users are 88% more likely to do business with an auto dealer that has a mobile site. “As mobile Internet usage grows, dealers who have embraced a mobile strategy are in a far better position to reach a customer who is ready to buy,” says Kerri Wise, Edmunds.com’s Sr. Director of Dealer Training. Gumtree extends offering to car dealers

www.AutoForum.co.za

2014 COTY Finalists T

he 2014 Car of the Year Finalists were announced at a successful spectator event during the second day of this year’s Johannesburg International Motor Show. This is the first time in the 29 year history of the WesBank/ SA Guild of Motoring Journalists Car of the Year competition that the finalists were announced in this way. “That really was a great idea, and I am thrilled with the number of people who left the show-halls to watch the count-down to revealing the finalists,” said WesBank’s Car of the Year Co-ordinator, Michelle Davis. The Nine 2014 WesBank/SAGMJ Car of the Year Finalists are:

O

nline classifieds site Gumtree recently launched its virtual showroom facility for automotive dealers. It says that the new facility makes listing and searching for cars easy and aims to build on the compelling nature of the iconic website. Former RMI head, Jeff Osborne, will now be leading the Gumtree team. Osborne says the competitively priced platform is expected to rev up online buying activity in the motor industry. Osborne commented: “With 400 000 car searches and 150 000 vehicle listings every month, Gumtree is the biggest virtual car showroom in the country. Offering uniquely South African listings, the Gumtree brand enjoys powerful recognition with 99% brand awareness as well as the backing of a global behemoth since our acquisition by eBay in 2005.” “We assessed the market and our own business and saw room for improvement,” says Osborne. “Our free car listing facility only catered for individual uploads, and yet, a significant number of our users are dealers. The time for bulk uploads is now. We think first movers will get a lot of traction and offer dealers and consumers a massive advantage.” One of the highlights of the platform is the ability to have a user’s listing refreshed (edited) each day. This ‘bumps them up’ in search results. Another is the ‘showroom window’, which Gumtree says shows off top listings to their best advantage. The platform also offers a managementreporting tool. This shows sales performance-related variables of listings and administration, such as frequency and type of use by sales agents.

n mid-October, the Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) saw its three millionth unit rolled off the production line. The automaker celebrated the milestone at its Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria, and even Global President and CEO Alan Mulally was onhand to join in the festivities. Mulally said: “The company is building on its legacy of innovation by expanding advanced manufacturing capabilities and introducing groundbreaking technologies that could revolutionise mass production for decades to come.” The company has been part of the SA motor industry since 1923, producing vehicles for the domestic market as well as exporting to 148 markets around the world. “At Ford we are accelerating our efforts to standardise production, make factories more flexible and introduce advanced technologies to efficiently build the best vehicles possible at

the best value for our customers. South Africa is one of only three assembly plants around the world that produces the new Ranger and as such competes on a global stage.” Jeff Nemeth, President and CEO of FMCSA said that the local arm of the automaker produces around 370 vehicles a day. Ford has invested R3.4 billion into South Africa in order to transform the company’s local facilities to produce the Ford Ranger and Duratorq engine. Annual capacity has been increased at the Silverton Assembly Plant to 110 000 units, with approximately 3 100 people employed in South Africa. “Today we celebrated a huge milestone. As much as our heritage is American, we’re South African too. We’re one of the longest operating car manufacturing companies in South Africa, and this milestone speaks to our commitment to the local market, ” Nemeth concluded.

Numsa’s commentary post strike N

umsa members recently went back to work, following a 4 week strike that has seen SA’s reputation as an automotive investment destination blackened. It has also been described as a game of Russian Roulette” by industry members, (see Business Forum).

strike. “CEO’s of car manufacturers showed no leadership whatsoever during the Auto and Motor industry strikes. The likes of BMW must remember that it is taxpayer’s money that subsidises the profit they so generously make in South Africa.”

Following the return to work, Numsa issued a statement to the media in which it confirmed that it had accepted a 10% wage increase in the component manufacturers sector.

During the national motor industry strike, Numsa national leadership engaged with government on the issue of labour broking and equal pay for equal work and were assured that the legislation would have been passed before year end.

According to Irvin Jim, Numsa General Secretary, the strike “took 4 weeks simply because employers have been arrogantly and stubbornly sticking to the ‘peace clause’”. In this respect, the union says, employers have threatened centralised bargaining. It says that individual employers have given unilateral increases (and higher plant level increases), thereby seeking to undo centralised bargaining and bribing workers not to participate in the national protected industry strike. “We shall after the strike assess and examine the motor industry collective bargaining regime and take the fight back to employers.” Numsa said it refused to be “blackmailed” by BMW, Naamsa or any other “neo-liberal analyst/economists” for its right to

PAGE 10

However, the union warned that it was heading towards a tyre manufacturing industry wage deadlock. It also said it was extremely dissatisfied with the President’s signing into law etolling “which is nothing but privatisation of public roads”. “The National Treasury’s welcoming of the IMF’s call for a much more flexible labour market regime vindicates Numsa’s argument that our ANC government is pursuing neo-liberal and anti-working class policies. The IMF and governments NDP shall never deliver workers and the working class out of poverty, inequality and unemployment. If we allow this situation to continue we shall simply postpone the resolution of the triple crises to 2030.”

eToll “Travesty” The Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) in October released a statement to the media, following the Supreme Court’s ruling in favour of Gauteng tolling. It follows a massive social media outcry over the decision and the recent presidential bill signing, that effectively paves the way for eTolling to be rolled out. “The AA respects the Supreme Court of Appeal’s decision to allow the tolling of Gauteng’s highways. However, it is disappointed that the voice of the public has not been heard in this eTolling saga. The concerns of South African citizens have not been addressed or acknowledged, and it is a travesty that improved road infrastructure, which is so essential to this country, is being layered with unnecessary costs by adopting this particular method of funding when there are cheaper alternatives.” “The ongoing fight against eTolls has not been about users refusing to pay for improved roads, but rather about the unnecessary, exorbitant and unacceptable additional costs that the eToll system imposes on the citizens of Gauteng, and which is intended for roll out to more Gauteng highways and other metropolitan areas across the country.”
It continued: “Aside from the SANRAL maintained highway network, there is a massive backlog in road maintenance across the country. Deteriorating road infrastructure and badly maintained roads have a direct impact on South Africa’s already poor road safety performance. The AA calls on government to provide transparency on what the current

PAGE 12

national fuel levy of R2.13 per litre, paid by all South African motorists, is being allocated to and for a dedicated fund derived from this levy for road infrastructure improvement to address the road maintenance backlog.”
“Following this court ruling on eTolls, there is an administrative process that will now follow. The public will have until 9 November to comment on the gazetted eToll tariffs, while a commencement date is yet to be announced. Motorists need to be aware that there is no legal requirement to purchase an e-tag.”
The AA says that it will continue to update the public and its members via various media channels as matters unfold. Just a week after the commentary, OUTA announced that, while it still remains opposed to the introduction of eTolls, it will not appeal the Supreme Court Of Appeal’s dismissal of its challenge. The Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance Chairperson, Wayne Duvenage, said the organisation was too “constrained by shortages of funds” to continue. Is your shock tester the real deal?

G

abriel has warned that imported versions of its Actia Muller fixed and mobile shock testers for passenger vehicles adapted for the SA market, could present risks to consumers. Sean Staley, Control Instruments-Automotive Divisional Head – Drive Control said: “Shock absorbers are a crucial component of a vehicle’s safety. A shock test that shows that shocks are in good working order but are, in fact, not, could potentially be life threatening.” “Gabriel’s Actia Muller shock tester has been adapted to local market conditions and the test results provide a true reflection of the vehicle’s shocks. This is based on the extensive software modifications made by our company to the basic product.” He continues: “Not all shock absorber mechanical testing systems produce valid results. Gabriel spent over 12 months developing and adapting the Actia Muller system for the SA market.” “We have been alerted by some clients and fitment centres that certain competitive products give suspect results, such as recommending new shocks on almost brand new vehicles.” Staley says incorrect interpretation of shock tester results can also be a problem. Which is why the Gabriel shock tester produces a printed report that cannot be altered. “What stops the fitment centre from misrepresenting the results to generate a sale? Our system cannot be manipulated to do this.” Handwritten test reports are also problematic. “It lowers the integrity of the test by removing the connection between the test data and the mechanical test. In adapting the system, there needs to be compensation for lower road adherence for light-rear axle configuration vehicles.” The brand’s shock tester measures CAP (Phase Damping Coefficient). On the test screen it shows the road adherence factors, but this does not form part of pass/ fail criteria. It is this technology, says Gabriel, which distinguishes it from other machines. Road adherence is influenced by axle mass and tyre pressure, which makes testing of light axle vehicles difficult. CAP is not affected as much by mass or tyre pressure and allows light axle vehicles to be tested on the same pass/fail criteria. Front and rear-axle compensation on the Gabriel test bench also allows for front and rear axle pass/fail criteria on the same CAP scale, overall giving a significantly more accurate reading.

The people have spoken R

ecently the winners of the third annual Standard Bank People’s Wheels Awards were announced in Johannesburg.

simultaneously offering relevant and useful information to the consumer market regarding ownership perceptions of vehicle brands.

Voting took place during the period 10 June to August 25 and saw a total of 101 438 votes across the competition’s 30 categories. It’s the highest number received since the project’s inception. Notably, a record number of responses was received from vehicle owners in a survey designed to determine their satisfaction levels, with regard to the cars and bakkies they drive every day.

According to Sydney Soundy, Head of Vehicle and Asset Finance at Standard Bank: “Everybody has an opinion about the vehicle they own or would like to own and will defend their choices as vigorously as they do their favourite sports teams.”

Initiated by the Future Group in association with Standard Bank, research house TNS South Africa and media partner the Sunday Times, the People’s Wheels Awards is described as bringing a pioneering means of rewarding vehicle excellence, while

“These emotions - and the special place that many people have in their

lives for their cars - are one of the primary motivators for our sponsorship of the People’s Wheels Awards.” Soundy says in Standard Bank’s view, all motorists should have a voice in deciding which is SA’s most esteemed car. “In short, South Africans know their cars. The People’s Wheels Awards provides the opportunity for them to exercise their knowledge.” Presented category by category in alphabetical order, they range from budget buys to family sedans, from premium class road warriors to exotic supercars, from SUVs, MPVs and crossovers to delivery vans and bakkies.

The importance of data in your dealership The first in a series of articles aimed at furthering our understanding of the vehicle market.

T

he value and insight which data has to offer and the roll that data plays in business is absolutely key, and is integral in defining your business strategy. Accurate and timeous data should give insight into current trading conditions and should also act as an indicator as to where the used vehicle market is headed. Gone are the days when data simply acts as a supporting mechanism. Tru-trade delivers refined used vehicle data which is relevant, accurate and which reports on actual trading conditions. The management, analytics and interpretation of raw data is the corner stone of Tru-trade’s business. The company’s Llewellen Hartley explains: “analytics are the driver behind the data being unique, in that it is non-linear based.” This means that their knowledge and understanding of the impact of interest rates, over allowances and discounts enables the use and supply of data that is not based on guidelines, hunches

or incomplete information, but instead on robust, proven methodology and sound statistical models giving you the competitive advantage.

“Our predicted values for this particular model will have a high confidence level as there is a very definite trend that can be calculated.”

The aim is to deliver a price based on market activity for a particular vehicle code or Tru-code. On some occasions the pattern of correlation for the different year models gives different levels of reliability.

“In another example, in the Alfa Romeo 147 data set, the raw values provide a sound trend, despite a few outliers, which allows us to predict current values at a relatively good confidence level. As we drill down to individual model variants with less comprehensive raw data input, the trend becomes less reliable and for values on these particular models our confidence level would be lower. An example of this scenario can be seen in the Alfa Romeo Mito. The raw data values are sporadic and unpredictable and result in a trend line that is not indicative of accurate valuation. As we broaden the sample size by becoming less granular, so the confidence rating decreases.”

Llewellen quoted an example of where there is a very strong correlation between the raw data values and time, is for the Audi A4.

For more information on the company and the services it offers, contact Llewellen at lhartley@tru-trade.co.za

Robust Methodology for Accurate Analytics Price Data Key to the company’s methodology is the interpretation of the correlation of the price data obtained for a vehicle over time. A stronger correlation allows the provision of a more accurate prediction of value and will therefore be shown with a high confidence level.

UK traffic light system for drug labels

A

ccording to a new poll undertaken by road safety charity, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) in the UK, only half of drivers feel prescription drug labelling is clear enough on medicines.

harsh enough for drug-drivers. Currently, if prosecuted, they face a one year ban and up to £1000 fine. Fiftynine percent of respondents feel that this is not strong enough.

Earlier this year, the British Government announced that a drug-driving bill will be introduced and will include chemicals which can be found in prescription drugs. Almost a third of respondents suggest that a simple traffic-light system would be the best method to inform people of the risks of using prescription drugs when driving.

IAM Chief Executive Simon Best said: “Motorists clearly feel that labelling is not clear or consistent enough when giving information on driving when taking medications. A traffic-light system such as red for no driving, amber for care required and green for limited effects appears to be the most popular option. What is clear is that we will need a wide ranging information campaign to support the new laws and ensure motorists don’t find themselves on the wrong side of the law.”

It is clear that the vast majority of drivers have no sympathy for those who drive under the influence of drugs. Seventy-three percent of drivers think that those who drive whilst under the influence of illegal drugs are as dangerous as drunk drivers. Eighty percent of respondents agree with the view that a zero limit should be set for the worst illegal drugs. Motorists also feel that penalties in that country are not

PAGE 16

With SA drivers in the spotlight at the moment, this would be a useful addition. Of course, controlling the drink-driving problem is already a challenge for our local traffic cops – wonder how the drug testing road blocks will work?

Nissan in Nigerian Assembly JV

N

issan and West African conglomerate Stallion Group have announced their intention to jointly launch vehicle assembly in Nigeria. According to Nissan, the announcement is in expectation of final approval by the Nigerian Federal Government of the new Automobile Industrial Policy. The latter is designed to encourage development of the auto industry in Nigeria, and would see Nissan become the first major international manufacturer to launch vehicle assembly in the country, following the new legislation. Both parties have signed a Memorandum of Understanding which will result in Stallion – already Nissan’s exclusive distributor in Nigeria – increasing capacity at its existing plant, VON Automobile Ltd in Lagos.

Stallion currently produces commercial vehicles at the facility. The plant’s annual capacity will be expanded to 45 000 units to assemble a range of cars, light duty

trucks, pickups and vans. While full details of the product lineup will be confirmed at a later date, it is anticipated the first product to be introduced will be the iconic Nissan Patrol SUV in spring 2014. Capacity at the plant will also be opened to Nissan’s Alliance partner Renault, to be utilised according to future business needs. Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn said: “We welcome the proactive measures being taken by the Government of Nigeria to encourage inward investment and job creation driven by local auto manufacturing. Together with our local partner, Nissan is preparing to make Nigeria a significant manufacturing hub in Africa. As the first-mover in Nigeria, we are positioned for the long-term growth of this market and across the broader continent.” South African motor industry commentators fear that the investment in Nigeria may be largely in reaction to SA’s strike history and turbulence, and may be a warning sign for decreased future OEM investment in SA.

Metair’s new aquisition grows its presence in Mid East Metair Investments Limited, the South African manufacturer of automotive products for the Original Equipment (OE) and aftermarket segments, is set to acquire 100% of the issued share capital of Mutlu Holding – giving it an effective 75% interest in Mutlu Akü, a listed company on the Istanbul stock exchange. Mutlu Akü is the leading lead-acid battery manufacturer in Turkey and the Middle East.

T

he deal also sees Metair acquire controlling interests in Plastik, Turker Izabe and Metropol – all of which provide support to the battery manufacturing business. The total purchase consideration is for an amount of R2.17 billion. Metair Managing Director, Theo Loock, commented: “The acquisition of the number one battery brand in Turkey is a unique and significant acquisition for the company of a scarce asset with high growth opportunity. This acquisition is in-line with the Metair strategy that aims to derive 50% of its business from Original Equipment Manufacturers, 50% of its business from the Aftermarket and 50% of its overall business from batteries.” The transaction will also result in Metair having to make a mandatory tender offer to the minority shareholders of Mutlu Akü, as required under Turkish Law, for the remaining 25%

Is Nigeria a threat?

– Roy Cokayne

N

igeria is poised to establish its own motor manufacturing industry, which in future years could emerge as a competitor to SA for foreign direct investment by global multinational vehicle manufacturers.

programme. We think that is a win-win for both countries. We have been working on this for some considerable time. We are in the process of finalising a proposed agreement which we hope we can sign in the not too distant future.”

This follows the recent announcement by the Renault-Nissan alliance and West African conglomerate Stallion Group of their intention to jointly launch vehicle assembly in Nigeria and indicating there was potential to develop the plant into a major manufacturing hub for Nissan in Africa.

Davies added his department had also been having discussions with auto manufacturers about this. “I think we are all on board and moving in the same direction to support the industrial development of the motor industry in other parts of the African continent.”

Azar Jammine, a Director and Chief Economist at Econometrix, said it was “a sign of the times” and in retrospect may be seen as the seminal moment in the shift in power in Africa away from SA to Nigeria.

Nissan SA MD Mike Whitfield, who is responsible for the sub-Saharan Africa region, including SA and Nigeria, said the investment in Nigeria did not pose any threat to the SA motor industry and was an opportunity for cooperation and complementation.

“I also find it fascinating and not coincidental this announcement comes so soon after the motor industry strikes and BMW’s announcement. It could be coincidental but I doubt it. There could be a strong message in there.” This is a reference to BMW SA’s recent confirmation it had been taken off the bidding table for the production of a new and second model at its Rosslyn plant in Pretoria, because of the strike in the component manufacturing sector. “We are talking for the first time of Nigeria becoming a major competitor on the manufacturing side, which has not been the case hitherto and should be a massive wake-up call to the government and unions.”

Whitfield confirmed the Nigerian auto industry would be complementary to the South African motor industry, supplying semi knocked down vehicle kits and components. “South Africa could capitalise on this because Nigeria is a market of 160 million people.” Nissan SA currently exports its pickup to Nigeria and Whitfield said these exports would continue. Whitfield said there was a need to be realistic, adding SA’s motor industry started 40 years ago.

However, Nissan South Africa and the SA government shot down any suggestion Nigeria would be competing with SA’s automotive industry. DTI Minister Rob Davies stressed at the official opening of JIMS that the Nigerian investment announcement was something the South African government welcomed, not feared. Davies said much of the commentary about the investment in Nigeria’s motor industry was ill informed. He said the SA government had been working with its colleagues in Nigeria to support them in establishing motor manufacturing and were doing this for two solid reasons. Firstly, because SA supported industrialisation not just of SA, but of the entire African continent and secondly because it believed there were synergies and complementarities SA could develop if Nigeria develop a motor manufacturing industry. “Put quite simply, a Nigerian industry will start with semi knocked down kits. We are seeking to position South Africa as suppliers of semi knocked down kits and in return for that we will be able to support them in a number of ways with the technical development of their motor manufacturing

CAR Conference 2013 SA’s automotive industry must find another competitive advantage other than low labour costs, that is according to Naamsa President Johan van Zyl. This space had already been taken by the likes of India and China and global auto production was flowing into emerging markets because of cheap labour costs. Speaking at the CAR Conference at the Johannesburg International Motor Show, he said a comparative research study undertaken by South Africa’s Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC) had found that SA’s direct labour costs were 222% more - and indirect labour costs were 324% more - expensive than in India. Indirect labour costs were not just the people who touched the metal, but also the production engineers, support staff and maintenance people and also needed to be compared with the labour costs in other markets, he said. Van Zyl stressed SA was not a low cost labour production country and, based on the country’s history, did not believe it could become such a country. He added that local metal pressings were 36% and iron castings 45% less competitive than in India, and that India’s electricity was 26% more expensive than in SA. Garth Strachan, acting Deputy Director General Industrial Development Policy Development at the DTI, told the conference that government support for emerging regional auto production locations, such as vehicle assembly in Nigeria, was aligned with its support for industrialisation of the African continent, which it saw as a significant opportunity. Strachan said that hopefully by 2015 an African Union free trade agreement would exist, which for the first time would bring 700 million consumers into a free trade agreement. He continued that the SA government knew Nigeria was set to commence assembly and production of vehicles, but did not see this as a threat. “We have to explore the complementarities, including technical support, in return for favourable access for SA components and sub assemblies. This squares firmly with government support for continental industrialisation.” The Renault-Nissan alliance and West African conglomerate Stallion Group recently announced a joint vehicle assembly project in Nigeria, and hinted at potential to develop the Nigeria plant into a major manufacturing hub for Nissan in Africa. Strachan said he was unable to expand more on the

PAGE 22

collaboration between SA and Nigeria, particularly on component technical support, because this was the subject of discussions between DTI minister Rob Davies and his counterpart in Nigeria. However, Strachan stressed the critical issue was that Nigeria was just starting out and was decades behind SA. “Hopefully we can export semi knocked down (SKD) kits to Nigeria and can ensure that a range of component manufacturers could also export under preferential access agreements into Nigeria. Africa is growing exponentially off a low base, but many African countries are growing their GDP between 7% and 12% year-on-year, driven largely by a massive mineral primary production exploration and exploitation.” Van Zyl said SA’s automotive industry would have to improve its costs competitiveness to achieve the APDP vision of producing 1.2 million vehicles by 2020. He added the SA industry would need to grow by 6.7% compounded a year to achieve this vision. He told attendees three building blocks to achieving this vision that were positive included a stable policy framework, stable political and economic policy and the investment required. Areas that required work included the need to grow the SA vehicle market and exports, and improve competitiveness. Van Zyl said there was a combination of factors contributing towards the industry being uncompetitive, including the strong and/or fluctuating currency, logistics and locality disadvantage, local content; production volumes, as well as high wage demands. He added there was a need for concrete plans to overcome these challenges. “We need some real structural reform in terms of labour relations and some of the collective bargaining processes. We need [labour] stability in the industry. We cannot be a global player if we don’t act like a global player. This is critical for our future success.”

MIWA Demand for skills in motor industry grows – Les Mc Master

E

conomic uncertainty has curtailed consumer spending and this conservative trend is now being felt in the motor industry, with South African motorists tending to hold onto their private vehicles for longer periods. This has in turn seen increased demand for generic workshops, especially for motorists whose existing dealer maintenance and repair plans have expired. While stronger demand bodes well for the independent auto repair shops that have survived some of the toughest years in the industry, the necessity to up skill staff is more important now than ever. Workshop owners are faced with a huge skills shortage. Trying to find staff is challenging and head hunting has become the norm. As a result, workshop owners need to train their current staff and identify where the skill gaps lie. Vehicles have also become increasingly more complex over the years with the addition of highly advanced electronic components. Mechanics are now expected to be service engineers with the ability to operate at complex, technical levels.

MIWA

Auto workshop owners will need to shift their focus from merely retaining customers to offering a multi-skilled expert that can advise on and service vehicles across the board.

PAGE 24

In order to remain competitive against the OEM dealers, the aftermarket auto shops have to depend on technical manuals, manufacturers service information, even the Internet for updated technical specs and fault identification, because of the variety of models they have to service.

Delmar, to host its ground-breaking automotive technician training programme in South Africa. MIWA was looking for a training programme that satisfied two major criteria, firstly a list of 13 aspects that would cover technical knowhow on a vehicle from bumper to bumper and secondly, course material that included the latest model cars but was not brand specific. Fortunately Delmar, part of Cengage Learning, already had a Master Technician course that more than satisfied these criteria and could easily be customised to fit the local environment. The training programme is designed to be completed within three years and is divided into 12 subjects, with a maximum of three months allowed per subject. Enrolment requires the student to already have qualified as a motor mechanic, diesel mechanic, automotive electrician, automotive machinist, diesel fuel injection mechanic or diesel fitter. Once the student has completed a preliminary exam, to prove they have enough basic knowledge, the online or CD-based curriculum is accessed using a personal identification code. With today’s vehicles demanding more training and greater specialisation, mechanics are going to have to continuously adapt to changing technologies. So if the value of a good mechanic is based on the extent of his limited basic skills and knowledge, then the value of a Master Technician will be priceless.

Until recently there has been no further training available in South Africa for the generic mechanic once he has qualified, unless of course he has had OEM specific training. Diagnostic equipment assists to a certain extent but it can only do so much, which is why two years ago at the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) show in Las Vegas, MIWA approached American training company, Les Mc Master is the Chairman of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), and the owner of M-Centre in Centurion. He has been in the motor industry for 42 years in various managerial positions and assumed the role of Chairman of MIWA in 2009 believing the industry needs a body to ensure the highest possible standards are met at all times. He is currently leading the charge in the Right to Repair Campaign.

Right to Repair gains voice at JIMS MIWA made good use of the JIMS event to punt its Right To Repair Campaign to the public and trade. ‘You have the right to repair’ was the message loud and clear at the organisation’s stand at the 2013 show. Les Mc Master, Chairman of MIWA commented: “Consumers should have the right to select where their vehicles are serviced, maintained and repaired at competitive prices in the workshop of their choice. This is what we are fighting for through this campaign. There is a need for a fair and competitive regulatory environment that enables freedom of choice for the consumers and that gives aftermarket Small Medium Enterprises a chance to stay in business.” The campaign is two pronged – it aims to give motorists the right of choice regarding the aftermarket care of their vehicles, while at the same time protecting the rights of independent operators to maintain, service and repair modern vehicles equipped with multiple electronic control units, managed by complex software

PAGE 26

and multiplex networks. It also commits to safeguard independent aftermarket operators’ right to exist, serve and grow. “Only strong, entrepreneurial competition will result in advantageous pricing for consumers and ensure that local businesses can continue to provide quality service in the neighbourhoods they serve and support.” Mc Master recently addressed the Global Right to Repair Coalition in Washington on the current state of affairs in South Africa. The US and European delegations endorsed and recognised the Right to Repair Campaign in South Africa as an important part of the global Right to Repair efforts, pledging their wholehearted support and assistance. “We feel confident that with this huge international endorsement change will happen in South Africa,” says Mc Master. MIWA also featured its Master Technician Programme at the show, encouraging qualified technicians to elevate their existing knowledge base to the next level.

CAPA tops 60 million certified parts

T

he Certified Automotive Parts Association, based in the US, announced last month that it had achieved another major milestone. In September it reached nearly 62 million CAPA certified parts.

While metal parts have been the backbone of the CAPA programme, plastic parts (bumper covers, grilles, etc.) and lights are currently the fastest growing part categories.

“As the premier certification body for aftermarket automotive parts, this represents significant market penetration for CAPA parts with potentially 20 000 000 vehicles in the US fleet with CAPA Certified parts installed,” said Jack Gillis, CAPA’s Executive Director. This number represents the total number of parts CAPA Certified since 1990.

“It’s no surprise that CAPA Certified bumper covers are in such demand as shops are tired of sagging, ill-fitting covers made of incorrect plastic materials,” said Gillis. While the organisation’s standards are ultimately designed to protect consumers from poor quality parts, they also serve shops that want to maintain a strong reputation for both high quality and reasonably priced repairs.

As CAPA continues toward the 100 million mark, the organisation believes it has made a major impact on improving the quality of aftermarket parts as evidenced by the following: • P art applications have increased by 16% per year for the past 5 years; • 1 7 new manufacturers were added to the programme in just five years—there are now 43 manufacturers fully capable of supplying high quality CAPA parts; • C APA parts in the market have increased by 13% per year for the past 5 years • C APA plastic parts in the market have increased by 19% per year and lights have increased by 30% per year for the past 5 years. CAPA comments that one of the reasons it is able to keep in-depth statistics on parts in the market is because every CAPA part has a unique number on a two-part, tamper proof seal, which is fully traceable. This seal protects shops and insurers from inadvertently using nonCAPA parts and allows easy proof of use. Shops are reminded that if the part does not have the bright, distinctive, yellow and blue CAPA seal, it’s not a genuine CAPA Certified part. “It doesn’t matter how the part is listed on the estimate, in a catalogue, or on an order form—if the part doesn’t have the CAPA Seal it’s not CAPA Certified,” said CAPA’s Director of Operations, Debbie Klouser.

PAGE 32

On the lighting front, not only have CAPA Certified lighting applications increased by 30% a year, but the number of certified lights in the US market has more than doubled in the last 5 years. “While these numbers are significant, there are nearly 1 000 additional lights in the CAPA Certification pipeline,” said Klouser. One of the key reasons for the exponential increase of CAPA parts in the market is the fact that the standards themselves are strong, independently developed, truly effective and fully transparent. “Anyone can look at the standards, and when they do, they’ll find them to be fully capable of identifying parts that are true functional equivalents to the car company brand parts,” said Gillis. “Furthermore, we congratulate the 43 CAPA Quality manufacturers who have been exponentially increasing the number of CAPA quality parts they produce.” The Certified Automotive Parts Association, founded in 1987, is the US’ only independent, nonprofit, certification organisation for automotive crash parts whose sole purpose is to ensure that both consumers and the industry have the means to identify high quality parts via the CAPA Quality Seal.

Car-O-Liner factory visit in Kungsör A couple of issues ago, we brought you a pictorial report on Car-O-Liner and Josam’s joint distributors’ conference in Sweden. BodyShop News Publisher Michel Malik was invited to attend and also managed to visit Car-O-Liner’s manufacturing plant in Kungsör.

T

he drive to Kungsör from Gothenburg was a few hours long and was pleasant, as I was in the company of Per Madsen, who is the Sales Director for the Asia Pacific region. Although I had visited the plant a couple of times in the past, I was assured by company CEO John Nordström that it was worth another visit, as things had changed. I was looking forward to it. Initially founded in 1935 as Sandins Metallfabrik, the company has had a few changes in its history – the first being the name change in 1948 (SAMEFA) and the second was the move to the town of Kungsör (in 1960), where began the production of the world’s first universal repair bench, in 1973, under the Car-O-Liner name. Since then Car-O-Liner has continued to pioneer and expand its services into state-of-the-art measuring techniques including the Car-O-Tronic system, various benches and top-of-the-line welding systems. In 2010, a bold move was taken for the relocation of Research and Development, Marketing, Method and Education 350 kilometres, to the coastal city of Gothenburg. At the same time, in order to improve efficiency and ease of production, a layout change was initiated. Car-O-Liner’s approach to the market goes far beyond just the supply of products. According to Per Madsen,

PAGE 34

the company doesn’t approach a customer and sell a piece of equipment. The salesperson offers a total solution with the objective to create a cost-effective body shop based on Car-O-Liner’s four cornerstones: high quality, advanced technology, ergonomic design and safety. These solutions not only incorporate the company’s own products, but they also propose other services and products such as body shop layout, workshop and staff development. Alongside the body shops, which are often end clients, the company also deals extensively with insurance companies.

AutoForum - Nov/Dec 2013 One particularly interesting market is the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), such as Volkswagen and BMW, where Car-O-Liner aims to play an increasingly important role. Car-O-Liner works closely with these OEMs at the early stages of design phase to consider how the vehicle will be safely repaired in the event of an incident. This includes, for example, what type of metals should be used in construction. Incorporating and understanding this type of consideration into the initial design of a car enables the company to develop a much more efficient safety-repair system. In addition, when a new model is launched an approved repair system needs to be in place at the same time, so that if a customer has an accident there is no need to wait for a system to be developed. The factory was extremely airy and well lit. Since headquarters and many staff members had moved to Gothenburg, things were no longer squashed and work stations were spaced more evenly and at comfortable distances. I saw a few new pieces of equipment, including welding robots and massive lathes. Car-O-Liner has subsidiaries in Sweden, Norway, the US, UK, France, Germany, and China, and sells through local distributors in more than 60 countries.

Used car inflation continues to slide

BUSINESS FORUM

According to the latest report from TransUnion Auto Information, as new car inflation touched 4.14% in the third quarter of this year - its highest level since December 2010 - used vehicle prices experienced their fourth consecutive quarter of decline.

PAGE 36

T

ransUnion’s third quarter Vehicle Pricing Index (VPI) found that used vehicle inflation dropped to -3.09% from -2.5% in the previous quarter of 2013.

While the ratio of used to new vehicles sold swung slightly back in favour of new cars at 1.66 from 1.70 in the second quarter, TransUnion believes this is just a temporary anomaly.

TransUnion calculates the VPI from data it receives on monthly sales returns from thousands of dealers throughout the country, as well as vehicle financing registrations from all of the major banks and vehicle finance houses.

“Given the rising cost of new cars – a trend that is unlikely to fade in the face of the ongoing volatility of the Rand – TransUnion anticipates demand for used vehicles to pick up in the months ahead.”

President Geoff Miller said the latest VPI reflected the ongoing divergence of new and used car prices that first became apparent at the end of 2012. “Consumer credit remains under stress and it’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for the used car market.”

“Indeed, the number of used vehicles sold each month is already starting to increase. The rise in demand could bring dealers some relief from their painfully thin margins,” Miller concluded.

“The third quarter TransUnion Consumer Credit Index showed that consumer credit health is declining, continuing a three-year downward trend; while the latest Bureau for Economic Research’s consumer confidence index, released in September, plummeted to a 10-year low.” “However, the tide appears to be turning for the used car market, offering a glimmer of relief for dealers. The market has not experienced this level of used car deflation since June 2006, and TransUnion’s month-on-month returns indicate that the market may be at the start of a slow recovery,” Miller said.

Strikes + Upheaval = Bet-hedging OEMs – Colin Windell

The smoke may have dissipated and the mirrors stacked away after the glitz and glamour of the Johannesburg International Motor Show, but the dust certainly has not settled following the lengthy motor industry strike – and the knock-on from that will probably start to kick in from this month.

W

hile the unions continue to play this weird Russian Roulette with the economy, warning signs are beginning to emerge. The fact that Nissan in Japan – with a perfectly good facility in Rosslyn – is planning a manufacturing plant in Nigeria might just signal the first of the automakers to be hedging their African bets. Industry export sales during September were decimated as a result of the three-week strike action experienced at the seven major vehicle manufacturing plants and which was followed by industrial action in the automotive component Industry. The main impact on domestic sales of the prolonged industrial action was relatively muted, due to existing inventory levels and the fact two thirds of new cars sold in South Africa are imported. In the event, aggregate export sales declined sharply by more than 75,1%, whilst overall domestic sales fell 1,5% in volume terms. Still, year-to-date domestic sales showed an improvement of 5,0% compared to the corresponding nine months of 2012. Aggregate industry sales of 54 281 units for September, reflected a decline of 1,5% or 812 vehicles from the 55 093 units sold in September last year. During September, 39 792 new cars were sold, which represented a marginal improvement of 303 units or small gain of 0,8%, compared to the 39 489 new cars sold in September last year. The car rental industry contributed positively to the September sales numbers and accounted for 20,1%.

PAGE 38

Domestic sales of industry new light commercial vehicles, bakkies and mini buses at 12 014 units reflected a decline of 1 269 units or -9,6%, compared to the 13 283 light commercial vehicles sold during the corresponding month last year. Sales of vehicles in the medium and heavy truck segments of the industry – largely unaffected by strike action – at 886 units and 1 589 units respectively, showed an increase of 108 units or 13,9% in the case of medium commercial vehicles, and an increase of 46 units or 3,0% in the case of heavy trucks and buses. The above average performance, in recent months, in sales of light, medium and heavy trucks suggested higher levels of investment spending in the economy and was in part related to infrastructural development projects. Industry new vehicle exports during September 2013 at 6 622 vehicles had registered a substantial decline of 20 024 units or a fall of 75.1%, compared to the 26 646 vehicles exported in September last year. This was due to the auto sector strike. Cyril Zhungu, General Manager: Motor Division at WesBank says: “This is a significant decrease in the export market and we have seen an almost immediate impact due to last month’s industrial action in the sector.

“The drop in vehicle sales and on-going strikes will reflect (negatively) in general business sentiment.” We also anticipate the negative impact on exports to continue into October, however we are only starting to see the impact of the supply shortages on the local sales. “Demand for finance was probably bolstered by pre-emptive buying in anticipation of possible stock shortages brought about by the industrial action, as well as by significant marketing activity from the manufacturers towards the end of the quarter.” “We anticipate that supply shortages will have more significant impact on local vehicles sales during October and WesBank remains firm in its view the growth rate for new car sales will moderate down to 2.5% for 2013.” “With labour issues encountered on a production, supplier and retail level over the past month, it was inevitable these effects would be hard-felt in the reported sales numbers,” says Ford’s General Manager, Rob Crouse. “Surrounding economic conditions continue to impact the sales environment and against which, the automotive industry continues to perform. We can still expect 2013 to be a successful year for industry sales, which will be aided by a return to some labour stability.” “The trend seen last month, where the light commercial sector showed strength in contrast to the passenger sector, was reversed in September,” says Brian Olson, GMSA’s incoming Vice President of Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing.

“Factors of influence here are the strength of the rental market during the past month, up 21,6% on September 2012, which buoyed demand for passenger vehicles. In addition, a shortage of inventory in the Light Commercial sector where there is a high percentage of locally manufactured vehicles will have impacted negatively on sales.” “The market is showing the first symptoms of the shortage in the supply of locally produced vehicles and if one considers there is on average six weeks of stock in the various stages of the vehicle value chain (including storage, delivery and dealer stock), vehicle sales in October will drop further below expectation,” says Calvyn Hamman, Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing at Toyota South Africa Motors. The decline in sales, explains Hamman, will weigh heavily on overall vehicle sales growth for 2013, while the estimated R600 million daily loss experienced by the automotive industry during the strike will undoubtedly impact on the country’s gross domestic product for this year. “The drop in vehicle sales and on-going strikes will also reflect in general business sentiment,” says Hamman. “Most of the recent industry barometers put sentiment in negative territory, which will in turn influence future vehicle purchases.” The drop in business sentiment was counter-balanced by some positive news, including the decision by the Reserve Bank to keep interest rates unchanged and this month’s drop in fuel prices, albeit small.

Emerging markets dominate motor demand – Emmanuelle Hirsch

The motor industry is the world’s 6th largest industry by GDP with a revenue of €2 000-billion. By 2018, the estimated average growth rate for the sector will be 5,6%, supported by the development of the car fleet in emerging countries. China accounted for 20% of global sales and 23% of production in 2012. 2009 was a pivotal year for the global car industry. It marked the parting of ways between mature and emerging countries. The latter continued to grow, while the crisis hit Europe and the US particularly hard.

The limited growth outlook in Europe is prompting European carmakers to turn towards other markets such as Russia, China and Brazil. This is also the result of production overcapacity in Europe.

Global car production fell in 2009 by 13% to 61,8-million units produced compared to 2008. In the same year, production in Europe decreased by 17,3% to 15,2-million vehicles and in the US it plummeted by 34% to 5,7-million units produced.

Some plants are operating at full capacity, such as Volkswagen and BMW, because their models are exported outside Europe. In France the production capacity utilisation rate is 62%. It should also be noted that Germany and France are the leading countries in terms of research and development.

It was also the year when two of the big three, General Motors and Chrysler, applied for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The next two years saw an improvement in production and sales, especially in Asia, where China became the sector’s driver.

“Emerging countries seem to be the growth driver for carmakers.” The situation again changed in 2012. The European car market once more went into crisis, while the US market experienced a rebirth with 14,8-million vehicles sold (+13% compared to 2011) although the pre-crisis level was still not reached. In 2012, China became the leading global market with 19,3-million vehicles sold. In 2012, the European market was particularly affected, and especially French carmakers. 16,1-million vehicles were sold in Europe in 2012 (-5,6% compared to 2011). In the first half of 2013, 6,2-million vehicles were registered (-6,6% compared to the first half of 2012). Most European countries experienced a reduction in registrations. Germany saw its registrations fall by 8,1% to 1,5-million, France fell by 11,2% to 931 476 and only the UK did well with a 10% increase in registrations to 1,1-million. Overall, the countries of Southern Europe have been hit harder than Northern Europe. The relocating of production to Eastern Europe and Turkey since the 2000s is noteworthy. The latter accounted for around 8,9% of European production in 2002 and increased to 25% in 2013. Volume carmakers (Fiat, Renault, etc.) have a greater presence in the East than premium carmakers such as BMW. Volkswagen has a subsidiary in the Czech Republic with Skoda.

PAGE 40

How It Has Changed The Sector In North America In 2009, the filing for “Chapter 11” for the two major US carmakers forced the US to largely restructure the sector: closing many unprofitable plants and cutting US wages. 2012 marked the return of the US as a leading player in the global market with more than 14-million vehicles sold (+13% compared to 2011). These productivity gains led US carmakers to turn towards other markets, exporting nearly 1,01-million vehicles in 2012. According to the Polk Institute, the sector’s recovery should continue in 2013 and 2014, but without reaching the pre-crisis level of around 17-million units. In the first half of 2013, Americans bought 7,8-million cars (+7,7 compared to the 1st half of 2012). The total figure for 2013 should reach around 15,9-million cars. And In Emerging Countries Manufactures are setting up operations in emerging countries either directly or jointly with a local partner. For instance, in Russia, Renault has entered into an alliance with Avtoframos and in China GM owns 34% of Wuling. Only the Indian market still consists of local carmakers. In 2012, China become the global number 1, both in terms of sales and vehicles produced with more than 19-million. India sold 3,5-million vehicles and Russia 3,1-million. According to Ernst & Young, for these countries the number of vehicles per 1 000 inhabitants in 2012 was 52 for China, 17 for India, 260 for Russia and 532 for Germany. This leaves considerable scope for growth compared to developed countries where the market is becoming saturated. These new markets also offer several highpotential segments: the premium segment for well-off households and the low-cost segment for the emerging middle class.

High performance, cost effective electronic engine sealing frame Victor Reinz has announced the newly developed electronic connector gasket that boasts exceptionally high-performance and is cost-effective to produce. The first of its kind in Europe, it provides a cylinder-head seal that is thoroughly impermeable to oil at all points where cables run into and out of the engine. A cut-out provides for a protected cable feedthrough from the engine management system to the interior of the cylinder head. What this means is that the electronic connector gasket innovatively unites the functions of sealing, electrical connections, and cable routing in a single product. The innovation is the first media-impermeable connection between an elastomer and a thermoplastic sealing frame, made of polyamide for an optimised bond. What is more, it does not need any additional primer and provides unimpaired oil resistance and impermeability. Victor Reinz explains that a primer is only used to aid in the 100% jacketing of the pin pack in the area of the electrical feed-through for sealing by the elastomer. The pin pack is a prefabricated unit made up of cables, metal lattices, and crimped or welded plug connections, in accordance with OEM specifications.

The product has a compact shape with a low installation height saving space and electrical components are preassembled.

New lab for Delphi

D

elphi Automotive PLC has opened its newly combined advanced diesel injection and combustion technical lab in Bascharage, Luxembourg. The company says that the diesel injection and combustion lab brings together its diesel and petrol research in a single location, in order to take advantage of synergies between the two teams. Located within Delphi’s Customer Technology Center (CTC), the new lab is expected to enhance its ability to coordinate its research with customer advanced engineering groups. Staffed initially by 40 scientists and engineers, the new lab will also support extensive Ph.D. and post-doctoral studies and projects, by working closely with European universities and research institutions. “Delphi’s goal is to help vehicle manufacturers deliver the same performance while satisfying increasingly demanding fuel economy needs and emissions regulations,” said John Fuerst, Delphi Powertrain Systems President. “The best way to accomplish this is to develop the most efficient injection and combustion with very streamlined systems. This will be the main focus of this new research laboratory.” Additionally, the new research lab will look specifically at minimising performance change over time, which is vital to ensure consistently low emissions and high refinement throughout a vehicle’s life. It will also further develop the technologies that support its closed-loop control strategies. The CTC Luxembourg also serves as Delphi’s Europe, Middle-East and Africa regional and Powertrain Systems divisional headquarters.

eaders of “Fleet Transport” magazine, truck drivers and owners, users of social networks such as Twitter and Facebook, along with visitors to the most recent Mondello Truck Show in Ireland, were able to vote for their favourites. The choice was between the last ten winners of the Irish “Truck of the Year” award, among them leading brands such as Scania, MAN, DAF and Volvo.

PAGE 46

The Mercedes-Benz Actros also won “best distribution truck 2014”. Daimler FleetBoard GmbH was similarly honoured as the best innovation for trucks. Its telematics-based Internet services help companies to save fuel and to manage their logistics processes better. The spotlight fell on the Actros for the fourth time at the Irish “Truck of the Year” awards ceremony, as the truck had previously won the award three times. “This victory is a further tremendous accolade for the already multiple award-winning Mercedes-Benz Actros”, commented Jarlath Sweeney, Publisher of Fleet Transport magazine, at the presentation of the award. “With the aerodynamic design of its cab, its outstanding driving characteristics, its handling

and comfort, the new Actros sets a fresh benchmark. A worthy winner of the Irish “Truck of the Decade” award.” The truck had previously won the highly soughtafter Irish “Truck of the Year 2013” trophy back in 2012. The international “Truck of the Year” jury, made up of specialist commercial vehicle journalists from 24 European countries, has also voted a total of four times for Mercedes-Benz’s long-distance specialist as the best truck of the year. According to Fergus Conheady, Head of Sales at Mercedes-Benz Ireland: “We are delighted to have been awarded this very special Irish trophy and would like to thank everyone who voted for our truck. This recognition makes us extremely proud and motivates us to continue our efforts.” Over half of all new Actros models ordered by European customers – and this a full year before the more stringent emissions standard comes into effect - are Euro VI-compliant versions. In Germany, in fact, the proportion is more than 75 percent. With around 800 000 vehicles sold since its market launch in 1996, the Mercedes-Benz Actros is the most successful heavy-duty truck in the world.

Revolution & innovation from Freightliner at JIMS 2013 – Dave Scott

I

t’s so refreshing to see research converted into hardware – that’s Freightliner’s Revolution/Innovation Truck displayed at the Johannesburg International Motor Show (JIMS). It’s all about ‘what customers want’ which is normally and only displayed in pie-charts and trend-lines for PowerPoint presentations. Now it’s there for touch and feel and real market feed-back. The Innovation Truck is designed around regional haul in the USA and only one driver whose daily activities are embodied in proof of delivery (POD), consignee electronic interfaces, route and weather forecasting, connecting to trailers and heavy traffic. The passenger seat side of the cab is there for frequent driver ‘office duties’ while there’s also space behind the driver seat for a rest. HOS rules – what’s that? In the USA everything revolves around the hours of service (HOS) regulations issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) governing the working hours of anyone operating a commercial motor vehicle (CMV). This includes truck drivers, both commercial and city bus drivers, and school bus drivers who operate CMVs for motor carriers (their employers). These rules limit the number of daily and weekly hours spent driving and working, and regulate the minimum amount of time drivers must spend resting between driving shifts. In terms of operating hours South African truck drivers are fatigued, un-monitored and ‘over-incentivised’.

connectivity of a mass-market tablet device. It gives the drivers of today and tomorrow access to a revolutionary new tool that helps them run smarter than ever before. According to Justin Yee, Manager Advanced Engineering Vehicle Concepts: “TruckOS could create a whole new platform for electronic integration; the possibilities are endless.” The truck driver of the future will have to be trained to type and address software, not just drive a truck. There much more to this Innovation Truck than space permits. But that’s what websites are for – take a tour http://www.freightlinertrucks.com/Revolution/#start and ponder the future of trucking.

Integration is the way of the future or in other words convergent electronic connectivity. Freightliner’s Truck Operating System (TruckOS) is a new concept in commercial vehicle operation that combines the intelligent on-board truck network with the portability and Internet

JIMS 2013 launches a clash of trucking titans – Dave Scott

Never mind the negative image that union NUMSA has created with overseas investors such as BMW, who announced bypassing an intended future investment following the recent damaging strike action. The truck manufacturers used Johannesburg International Motor Show (JIMS) 2013 as a platform for both vehicle launches and announcements around major investments. Iveco tabled an investment of R530 million, creating 1000 jobs. And with this they announced the Iveco Bus 180 E, a high-floor and front-engine bus, that will also be assembled in South Africa – the first Iveco bus ever to be produced here. Iveco also launched the new Stralis Hiway and Trakker Highland in the extra-heavy segment with sights set on doubling their share of extra-heavy retail sales to 6% of an ExHCV total market around 13000 units in 2014. Add to this Iveco will tackle the heavy truck segment with a locally assembled EuroCargo where their HCV performance has been lacklustre in the past. At the same time they launched the new Iveco Daily to compete with Mercedes Sprinter and the VW Crafter. Phew! Iveco are beating a kettle-drum of confidence in their forecasts because the forecast drives the system. Someone will lose market share to make way for Iveco’s intentions – ouch, it will hurt! And then Isuzu Truck South Africa announced that Isuzu Motors Ltd (Japan) was taking a 70% stake in the local outfit with General Motors (GM) holding the remaining 30%. The infrastructural partnership with GM provides vital systems for parts stock holding and distribution. Isuzu Motors have an eye on Sub-Saharan Africa where their current success in the SA market allows Isuzu to talk from a position of strength. The current absence of International trucks from the market and JIMS 2013 leaves many questions around the future of this marque – this leaves Freightliner as the sole rep for a USA driveline truck. But this does not mean that International operators will automatically go for Freightliner. Volvo Group products, UD Trucks – Renault – Volvo, were conspicuous by their absence at JIMS 2013. They had apparently spent all their spare cash on a direct promotional launch at Gerotek prior to JIMS. Add all Volvo Group products together and they are a formidable force in the market. But mixing all the brands together under one roof (a new Volvo truck dealer trend) has never worked well in the past, so judgment on this outcome is reserved for a future date.

PAGE 50

Hino presented an expanded model range – new 8x4 and 6x2 units – and their divisional ties to Toyota make them very strong. Hino will not easily give up its second place in the SA truck market with Isuzu hot on its heels. UD Trucks appear to be the market loser in the struggle for position between Hino and Isuzu. When you are the biggest in the SA truck market you are always tracked and under attack. But Mercedes-Benz gave no hint of concern at their sparkling launch of the new Sprinter and massive product display. A touch of arrogance is part of the culture of the 3-pointed star brand. MAN takes strength in the return of Geoff du Plessis, now Chairman of MAN Truck & Bus (S.A.) Pty Ltd. The MAN product line-up is impressive but can they improve the lot of VW trucks? Since taking over VW trucks from VWSA it appears that the local MAN people are not sure what to do with this brand as it makes little headway in the market. (And they are only struggling with two brands under one roof!) Scania have made massive investments in service and support - Scania South Africa’s brand new Durban branch just off the N2 in River Horse Valley north of Durban central represents around R70 million CAPEX. So Scania’s presence at JIMS is heartening for their customers but hanging on to their slice of the market pie is not going to be easy. Every truck manufacturer is talking about excellent service support and customer-centricity (even TATA) so how will Scania differentiate themselves? The point is that all these truck brands need a minimum 10% share of the truck market segment in which they play to realise their forecasts. If one adds all the forecasts together, including newly-arrived minnows whose CEO’s also want to play golf at Sun City, then a truck market exists which is far beyond 100%. It’s worth repetition: the forecast drives the system. Get the forecast wrong and serious pain is waiting in the wings.

SHOW TIME

Show Time

AutoForum - Nov/Dec 2013

JIMS 2013 The Johannesburg International Motor Show may be over for this year, but it left its mark on those who attended it. Apart from the glam cars and awe-inspiring technology on offer, it played host to numerous conferences and discussions, where trends, opportunities and growth areas for the sector were discussed and debated. It is really not possible to go through all the important discussions that took place, but here follows an overview of the show for those that may have missed out. A Cautious Medium Term Outlook Speaking at the official opening of the show, President of the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of SA (Naamsa), Dr Johan van Zyl told the attendees that the medium-term outlook for the automotive sector in South Africa will continue to be affected by the overall performance of the economy and by new vehicle pricing pressures as a result of rising costs and the impact of the weaker exchange rate.

He explained that above inflation new vehicle price increases will result in some moderation in the rate of sales growth in the remainder of 2013 and into 2014. He also explained the importance of a strong export market for the sustainability of the local motor industry and added that it was unlikely this year’s shipments would reach the projected 337 000 vehicles. This was due to the recent prolonged industrial action experienced by the vehicle and component manufacturers, which, he said, at seven weeks was unprecedented in the history of the local motor industry. “Naamsa, together with other stakeholders, namely government and labour, will address the issues which have contributed to the industrial action experienced by the industry. We will do so in a spirit of constructive cooperation to develop enduring solutions to ensure that the events of the past few months do not reoccur.”

AutoForum - Nov/Dec 2013 “I know that all the automotive multi-nationals in South Africa remain committed to the long-term growth and development of the industry and labour stability represents an important and essential building block to safeguard the industry’s future.” He believed the APDP would benefit the local industry in both growing production, localisation and employment. At the same event Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies, told show goers that several initiatives are to be implemented or developed to assist the South African motor industry to become more competitive globally. These include a programme to raise competitiveness and encourage excellence in production in the component manufacturing industry. Davies said that an amount of R23-million has been spent on this project already this year, while R63-million has been budgeted to improve the competetiveness in the automotive supply chain in a three-year programme. The DTI will contribute 50% of the latter amount and other stakeholders the balance. He added that that the early review of the APDP will be completed before the end of the next financial year, and that early indications are that the it is proving a success and has already resulted in significant investments in new projects; investments totalling R15-billion have been made since 2009 linked to the implementation of the APDP in 2013. Davies also said the DTI and other government departments were always looking at ways to increase industrialisation. One of these initiatives involves the Department of the Environment and Water Affairs, which is embarking on a programme to build charging stations for electric vehicles to encourage increased use of this eco-friendly power source.

The promotion of the manufacture of electric and hybrid vehicles in SA was seen as important and government was said to be compiling standards for these categories of vehicles and had a research programme under way with the University of Port Elizabeth as well as a commitment that the government would buy electric vehicles where they were suitable. The current programme to promote the local manufacture of buses and minibuses from semi-knocked down (SKD) kits will continue until 2015 after which production had to switch to assembling completely knocked down (CKD) kits. The Minister said that progress was being made to develop a multimodal vehicle manufacturing plant in the East London Industrial Development Zone with six companies short listed to run this operation which will assemble vehicles for a number of companies as a collective venture. The decision on the operator will be made before the end of the year. Davies believed that Nissan’s decision to build vehicles in Nigeria was an excellent opportunity for the local vehicle and component makers to benefit as suppliers of products and technology to the Nigerian operations. Full Days and Weary Feet The first media days of the show proved busy. With 16 press conferences and more than 45 vehicle reveals on the first day alone, the media were kept out of mischief. Practical sedans, sporty coupes, stylish crossovers and exotic concepts. The day kicked off with the President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz South Africa, Dr Martin Zimmerman, revealing the MB Guard armoured ML500 , and several other exciting new passenger vehicles from the German brand.

Renault, Volkswagen and BMW all wowed and Ford pulled out all the stops with the arrival Ford Motor Company President and CEO Alan Mulally, who revealed the new high roof Ford Transit van before handing over to local CEO Jeff Nemeth. Audi was all about performance, as was the Toyota stand, which was followed by Nissan and Infiniti, now in its second year in South Africa and about to rebrand many of its vehicles as it moves to a naming convention that starts with the letter Q. Mitsubishi, Mazda, Honda and finally Kia meant a full day of action. Day two progressed in a similar way with Hyundai’s new bright yellow Veloster Turbo, followed by General Motors, Chevrolet and Tata, as well as MG, Citroën, Peugeot and Jaguar Land Rover. FAW reminded the group that there are automotive companies investing in SA. GWM South Africa was followed by Mahindra. Then it was the turn of the oil company Engen, which not only announced a new range of Petronas Syntium products but also showed off a genuine 2012 Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One car that it had shipped in for the show. Commercials shined too The Johannesburg Truck & Bus Show, co-sponsored by the JIMS saw truck makers, importers and distributors express intensified focus on local customers, especially the growing light and

medium commercial vehicle, van and bus sectors. Most all of the commercial vehicle exhibitors reaffirmed their intention to spread their dealer networks for sales and service operations across South Africa and into sub-Saharan Africa. (see also Dave Scott’s article on page 50) Isuzu opened the show with the important announcement that the local company is now majority-owned by Isuzu Motors Limited, Japan. Chief Operating Officer, Craig Uren, said that with the local shareholding change comes the requirement from Isuzu for Isuzu Truck South Africa (ITSA) to take more responsibility for the sub-Saharan Africa territory. Isuzu Trucks announced a significant upgrade to their trucks competing in the medium commercial vehicle segment. Chinese FAW Group Corporation followed with their commitment to the local industry by proudly announcing their intention to fast-track the year-end completion of their first South African manufacturing facility at the Coega Industrial Development Zone in the Eastern Cape. Tata Motors unveiled their new models. Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) showcased a very extensive range of diverse products including the MercedesBenz truck, bus and van models, as well as American and Japanese marques Freightliner; Western Star and FUSO. A highlight was its concept-designed, futuristic Unimog built on a U5000 chassis. Volkswagen commercial vehicles were not to be outdone on the ‘concept’ vehicle side and managed to wow the local media with their Amarok Wörthersee 4X4 pick-up concept.

MIDAS NAPA Conference The first weekend of October saw almost 500 delegates descend on the mother city for the Midas and NAPA 2013 conference. The event was touted as a celebration of the coinciding anniversaries of 30 years of Midas and 40 years of NAPA, and themed on Midas’ DNA. This formed the basis of CEO Warren Espinoza’s opening presentation, where he led the attendees through a brief history of the Midas DNA. He focused on how the group’s various shareholders over the years had all influenced the direction taken at those specific moments in the company’s journey, but that the DNA of the group was a consistent influence, and continues to drive current strategies. Amongst the many Midas and NAPA members present at the conference were also some special guests including ex NAPA chairman, Rolf Gudegast amonst others, who clearly demonstrated that their DNA still runs in corporate colours. Presenters Adrian Seville and Deborah Patta kept the crowd engaged through some interesting presentations, but nobody was prepared for Vusi.

I doubt anyone that attended the conference will ever forget this presentation. As speakers go, having the “world public speaking champion” address your audience is always going to be enjoyable, but for me the thing that resonated was his passionate delivery, and personal story of building success from true adversity. My measure of presentation quality is not only how a crowd reacts during a presentation, but more how a great presentation makes them think, get excited about the ideas, and still be discussing them afterwards. The following day people were still discussing his talk – many completely disagreeing with some of its content, but that is almost unimportant. What matters is that his talk led to discussion - and an application of the thinking to their own businesses and lives. This, I felt, really drove home a well considered message - that all the delegates have the same Midas DNA in their businesses, and while it is the building block for growth and success, their commitment and efforts as individuals are what makes their own businesses, and ultimately the entire group, build value.

More than signs, more than branding – Warwick Robinson

Many people will be more familiar with Darryl Curtis from his long and successful off-road motorcycling career, specifically his 17 years for KTM and his recent very successful forays into the Dakar. But Curtis is also the man behind Bandit Signs, one of SA’s leading vehicle branding companies. “After building a reputation for durable off road graphics, the natural evolution into vehicle branding was achieved firstly through race vans, and later to the branding of entire fleets,” Curtis explains. Some of these fleets have numbered in the thousands, for instance the Rugby World Cup project’s 3500 vehicles. Bandit have continued to grow from their screen-printing beginnings back in 1991, and currently focus strongly on their fleet business, achieving contracts for premium manufacturers such as Jeep - for whom they brand the Wrangler models - as well as custom commercial vehicle branding, race graphics and high-end protective wraps. “Bandit are fully certified platinum converters for the two leading global brands of premium vehicle wrapping film - 3M and Avery Dennison,” says Curtis. But using quality product is only a part of being able to deliver to their clients. Bandit insists on certification for their applicators as well, which enables the company to carry both Avery and 3M’s full product warranty programme, as well as a fully controlled application environment, in accordance with the platinum status requirements. Together with training and certification to ensure excellent

PAGE 58

workmanship, the company keeps up to date with international industry-leading practices, such as knifeless tape technology. Curtis is adamant about two factors he considers as nonnegotiable, “Whether it’s a short-term 3-month wrap, or a digitally printed and laminated UV long-term wrap, Bandit deliver exceptional quality with consistency – and that is what makes us different”. Vehicle branding is the core service delivered by Bandit signs, but they also carry a number of innovative vehicle protection products, which are also distributed under license. Their offices are located in the North of JHB and the company offers a full service solution - from consulting on a suitable product selection to design, print, production and application of the vehicle branding. You can reach them on 011 462 5520 or sales@banditsigns.co.za.

Monroe launches European Shock App

RTT launches new tyre repair products

Tenneco launched a new app for the European market that allows customers to use their mobile device to access the latest information regarding the Monroe brand’s ride control components for virtually any application.

Ongoing developments in the tyre market generally require modification of repair materials and machinery. Rema Tip Top says that it is a specialist in this field, and confirms that its new announcements in the biggest product category Repair, Vulcanization and Fitting - fully meet the needs of the market.

The new app helps the user quickly and easily research shock absorber features, benefits and specifications as well as the corresponding part numbers for any passenger vehicle. Available for iPhone, iPad and Android mobile devices, the Monroe app offers fast, free access to an exciting array of helpful tools, including: • eCatalogue – a feature that enables the user to look up a specific application and see which premium Monroe ride control components are available • Part Search - provides detailed specifications, features, benefits and a list of applications for each corresponding Monroe part number • Shock Selector - enables the user to choose the appropriate Monroe shock absorber based on desired ride characteristics South African customers will have a bit of a wait for the same app applied to the local market – Monroe hopes to have it available during the course of 2014.

Thermopress XL vulcanizing machine The “XL” version of the Thermopress vulcanizing machine equips the tyre industry for the move to ever-broader and bigger sizes of up to 1500mm nominal width, primarily used for tyres on agricultural machines. Rema Tip Top says that a considerable advantage of the new machine is the shorter heating time, which in turn enormously reduces repair times. It can be used for both OTR and AS tyres as well as for tractor and EM tyres and permits any needed repair position for the tyre tread, the shoulder zone and the sidewall. With the aid of the movable frame, known as the “Shuttle”, large machines can be easily handled by only one worker. Reliable repair with ARAMID patches Aramid patches allow for even more versatile repair range for the farming and agricultural industries. The lower weight of the patch reduces both the balance weight needed and the development of heat during the heavy use that these tyres are subjected to. In comparison to its predecessor, the fibre material has been reduced to one layer instead of three, making the patch considerably more flexible. This also improves its ability to conform to the interior contour of the tyre, avoids the patch coming loose and makes application much easier. While in the 100 range rayon cord was used, the new patches use aramid cord. The material used in the 500 range is five times more abrasion-resistant, which is very important when considering the repair of faster-running agricultural industry tyres. The aramid patch is available in five different sizes to allow both small and larger repairs to be carried out, without hassle.
