Trade Talk Editorial The impact of that Junk Status label is being felt at all levels of the SA economy. From lowering car sales and higher food prices, to reduced cash flow and the required business smarts to manage your company’s credit, the term will already have impacted your daily life to a large degree. But SA and its people are tough, and it is yet another hurdle that will be jumped in time. In the interim it is about surviving the storm. While the GM impact will certainly reduce confidence in many sectors, it is the positive sentiment and financial commitment by the heavy duty manufacturers that gives us hope and will carry us through. Volvo Cars partners with Google Volvo Cars recently announced a close partnership with Google to develop a next generation in-car infotainment and connectivity solution. Based on Google’s Android operating system, the new solution will offer access to a wide array of apps and services, launching in new Volvo models within two years. “We are making an important strategic step with the Google partnership. Google’s platform and services will enhance the user experience by enabling more personalisation possibilities, while Android will offer increased flexibility from a development perspective,” says Henrik Green, Senior Vice President Research & Development at Volvo Car Group.

Using Android as the base operating system will increase speed and flexibility in the development and offer its customers the ability to personalise the connected in-car experience. Patrick Brady, Vice President of Android Engineering at Google comments: “This partnership gives us the opportunity to deliver a more seamless experience to Volvo drivers through a fullfeatured infotainment platform and rich ecosystem of Android applications and Google services.”

The partnership reflects the ongoing convergence between the automotive and technology industries as cars become increasingly connected. Volvo believes smart partnerships are the future for the car industry.

Toyota touted as planning to build hybrid battery plant in the US According to an article in Wards Auto, Primearth EV Energy, a hybrid-battery-making subsidiary of Toyota, has hinted that the automaker could be looking into building a lithium-ion battery production plant in the US. According to the article, the carmaker wants to produce “its own batteries for both hybrids and battery-electric vehicles, and the plant’s green light will be linked to future North American sales as the automaker begins shifting to Li-ion from nickel-metal-hydride.” “Toyota is expected to source Li-ion batteries for the Prius Prime plug-in hybrid EV from Panasonic until the early part of the next decade. The automaker does not yet have a BEV on

PAGE 6

the market, but several models reportedly are in the pipeline. The Prius Prime, the second generation of the Prius PHEV, went on sale last November.” The automaker already sources Li-on batteries for the standard Prius from Primearth’s Ohmori plant in Shizuoka prefecture. Primearth supplies battery technology to 39 Toyota and Lexus models, including the Mirai hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle. It also supplies the Mazda and Hino Dutro and Dyna trucks. The company was formed 21 years ago as a JV between Toyota and Matsushita Electric Industrial (subsequently renamed Panasonic).

Sprinter celebrates best sales ever in 2017 Q1 Mercedes-Benz’s Sprinter has kicked off 2017 with a new record. The first quarter of the year saw the delivery of approximately 45,000 units of the large van to customers all over the world. Significantly, this achievement means a 10% increase on the 2016 comparable period and therefore the most successful first quarter in Sprinter’s 20 year history. The van experienced especially strong growth in its core EU30 region (+12%), not surprisingly strongest in Germany (+15%) and the United Kingdom (+10%). In both countries, unit sales of Sprinter vans increased faster than the overall market growth, making the Sprinter one of the most successful commercial vehicles of all time and one of the bestsellers in Daimler’s product portfolio. From the middle of this year, the range will boast an additional equipment package. Mercedes-Benz Vans also set a new record for unit sales across all its model series in the first quarter of 2017. Daimler’s van division sold a total of 86,800 vehicles (Q1 2016: 76,600, + 13%). March was the most successful month of all time for the division, with 38,000 vehicles delivered to customers (Q1 2016: 32,700, +16%).

PAGE 10

First-quarter revenue grew by 6%. Orders from fleet customers and other large customers were a key driver of strong demand for the Sprinter in the first quarter of 2017. For example, Europe’s biggest car-rental company, Europcar, continued to favour the Sprinter. In March, Europcar received the first vehicles from Mercedes-Benz Vans from a major order for over 2,100 vehicles in the year 2017, including the Sprinter. The next generation of vans will be driven by the strategic initiative adVANce, which will see it fully connected and also available as a battery-electric version. The logistics company Hermes will be the first customer for the Sprinter with electric drive. By the end of 2020, Hermes Germany plans to deploy 1,500 Mercedes-Benz electric vans of the Sprinter and Vito model series in urban areas all over Germany.

Jaguar Simola Hillclimb - Records and tears The 8th edition of the Knysna-based event attracted an impressive driver line-up, as well as an estimated 15 000 spectators over the weekend who were treated to some of the wildest track-attack machines in SA. 2017’s Hillclimb saw records broken in the three new categories of the competition - the Road and Super Cars; Single Seaters and Sports Cars; and Modified Saloon Cars.

Thankfully no one was injured in the incident, with one of the vehicles reportedly having caught fire while in transit, resulting in the fire spreading rapidly and causing extensive damage to the others onboard. The fire had already been extinguished by the time the photos were circulated all over social media and press outlets.

Andre Bezuidenhout powered his 1989 Dallara F189 Formula 1 car to victory, breaking Franco Scribante’s existing 2016 lap record of 38.646 seconds by almost a full second.

Ian Shrosbree, managing director of Knysna Speed Festival and organiser and founder of the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb, expressed his dismay and distress after hearing of the incident.

Bezuidenhout conquered the King of the Hill challenge by blitzing the 1.9 km course in an official lap record of 37.695 seconds. That equates to an eye-watering average speed of 181.456 km/h, from a standing start, up the 1.9 km Simola Hill! But it was not all cheers and champagne for a number of competitors. A truck transporting some extremely rare vehicles home after the event caught fire on the N2 near George.

“After the resounding success of the last three days where each of the participating vehicles becomes part of the essence of the competition – this disaster impacts on us all. The loss of complete vehicles (some of them one-of-a-kind and literally irreplaceable) and the damage to others cannot be quantified. “It is much, much more than just the value of what has gone up in flames.”

VW resolves court case in the US Volkswagen AG and Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (together, Volkswagen) have confirmed that Judge Charles Breyer of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California has granted final approval to the settlement agreement between Volkswagen and private plaintiffs represented by a Court-appointed Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee (PSC).

California, as well as a Consent Order between Volkswagen and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. All three agreements were previously announced. With final approval of the 3.0L TDI V6 settlement, Volkswagen is able to offer a resolution to all of its customers with eligible vehicles in the United States.

The approval allows for a resolution to the outstanding civil claims regarding approximately 78,000 affected 3.0L TDI V6 diesel engine vehicles in the United States.

“Today concludes a comprehensive series of agreements that we have reached in the United States to honour our pledge to make things right for our customers, dealers and the American public,” said Hinrich J. Woebcken, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.

Concurrently, Judge Breyer also approved a Consent Decree between VW and the U.S. Department of Justice on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the State of

“Volkswagen’s commitment to the United States is stronger than ever, and we will continue to invest in this market as we work to become a global leader in sustainable mobility.”

GM pulls out of SA, Isuzu takes over and SA mourns In May, General Motors together with Isuzu, announced their respective future plans for the Isuzu, Chevrolet and Opel brands in South Africa. With GM confirming that it will pull out of its investments and manufacturing operations in the country – including the retailing of Chevrolet vehicles locally - Isuzu Motors has stepped up and intends to purchase GM’s South African light commercial vehicle manufacturing operations.

The move is drastic but not a complete surprise. In our last issue we ran an article in which GM discussed its reducing its losses in developing countries – and apparently that includes SA. Its “restructuring” activities is expected to realise annual savings of about $100 million (R1.31billion).

“After a thorough assessment of our South African operations, we believe it is best for Isuzu to integrate our light commercial vehicle manufacturing operations into its African business,” said Stefan Jacoby, GM executive vice president and president of GM International.

What this means locally for the commercial vehicles division, is that - subject to local and competition regulatory approval - Isuzu will purchase the Struandale manufacturing plant and GM’s minority shareholding in Isuzu Truck South Africa (Pty) Limited, to continue manufacturing the Isuzu KB and medium- and heavy-duty commercial trucks in Port Elizabeth.

“We determined that continued or increased investment in manufacturing in South Africa would not provide GM the expected returns of other global investment opportunities.”

PAGE 14

It will also assume control of GM’s Parts Distribution Centre and Vehicle Conversion and Distribution Centre.

In addition, Isuzu intends to set up its own dedicated dealer network to market, distribute and service light commercial vehicles for existing and new Isuzu customers. Haruyasu Tanishige, senior executive officer for the Sales Division of Isuzu Motors Ltd commented: “We are committed to the South African market. The integration of our light commercial and medium- and heavy-duty commercial business will strengthen our base to grow here. We will do this through our focus on providing outstanding aftersales and customer support, establishing close relationships with our local partners and expanding our business.” “Isuzu is building a strong base to grow on the African continent in the long term. Evidence of this is our recent purchase of GM’s 57.7% shareholding in its East African operations, which has given us management control of the company. Integrating the South African light commercial vehicle operations into our business is the next step in laying the foundation for our growth plans in the future.” Isuzu vehicles have had a presence in South Africa since assembly began over 44 years ago. For the past four years, Isuzu has occupied the number one position in the mediumand heavy-duty commercial truck segment of the South African market.” GM South Africa will cease the manufacture and supply of Chevrolet vehicles to the domestic market by the end of 2017, subject to consultation with employees and unions. It confirmed it will continue to provide service and parts support for Chevrolet customers. Following the recent announcement of the sale of Opel/ Vauxhall to the PSA Group, GM says it will work with PSA to evaluate future opportunity for the Opel brand in South Africa. Importantly, existing Chevrolet and Opel customers will continue to be supported in the market. But what about the staff currently employed? In a Sunday Times article, Numsa is quoted as saying it will be consulting lawyers regarding the announcement. Dorette De Swardt’s article quotes Numsa general secretary Irvin Jim as saying: “This is the second time that GM is pulling out of South Africa‚ and as Numsa we smell a rat. We suspect that the shareholders got a very good deal at the expense of the workers. The company has already shut down the plant and has indicated that they will meet with us to discuss the latest developments‚ but that is after the fact.” The story continues: “As a result we are consulting lawyers to see what legal avenue we have in resolving this crisis. Isuzu will be taking over operations at GM‚ but we doubt that they will absorb all the workers who used to work at those plants. There are over one thousand employees at GM and five hundred of those are based in the Chevrolet division. The vast majority of employees are NUMSA members.”

PAGE 16

He went on to state that “As a trade union we are surprised that GM chose to convey this announcement in this way. There was no consultation with the union‚ and furthermore‚ the company has not divulged any details about the fate of its employees affected by this restructuring. By shutting down operations in South Africa this will have a major impact not just on GM plants‚ but for companies along the value chain as well.” Jim’s fears were realised only days later, when GM filed notices to retrench around 600 workers of the 1500 workforce. The organisation said it would demand “full disclosure on General Motors (GM) deal with Isuzu.” The notices came a day after Numsa officials met with GM employees on Tuesday in Port Elizabeth – as reported in Business Report on 24 May - to discuss “details of the company’s decision to disinvest from South Africa.” The Business Report article quoted Jim as saying that Numsa were “disgusted” by the manner in which GM had conducted itself. “GM has not disclosed the full terms of the agreement it signed with Isuzu. By virtue of the fact that it acted unilaterally and refused to engage trade unions and government on its decision, our view is that this announcement is proof that it is attempting to pull the wool over our eyes.” But according to an IOL report from the African News Agency, union Solidarity believes the political shenanigans of the last few months are the real reason the automaker has decided to pull the plug on SA. “President Jacob Zuma should shoulder the blame for General Motors South Africa ceasing its operations in the country”, union Solidarity said. “GM’s withdrawal from the South African market comes as a ripple effect of President Zuma’s ill-considered reshuffling of the Cabinet in April this year,” said Solidarity’s deputy secretary for the Metal and Engineering Industry, Marius Croucamp. “We are beginning to see the negative impact of this downgrade, fewer investments and lower economic growth are but the start.” GM has denied that the political scenario has influenced their decision, and that reports of their disinvestment in numerous markets are well documented. Regardless the impact of the move will be felt by a wide section of the country. Not only will the direct employees be effected, but the greater society surrounding the plants that have benefitted over the last few years. GM South Africa President and Managing Director Ian Nicholls said in his announcement: “These decisions were not made lightly. We appreciate the support that our employees, customers, dealers, suppliers, the government and other key stakeholders have given us over the many years that we have operated in this country. We will manage the transition as smoothly as possible.”

SA driver attitude and behaviour worsening According to a recent survey conducted by the AA in April, nearly 90% of South African motorists believe compliance with the laws of the road has worsened over the past two years. In addition, nearly 75% of people also believe the attitude of motorists towards one another has deteriorated over this period. The results of the survey form part of ongoing research by the AA into driving conditions, driver attitudes, and driver behaviour on the country’s roads and saw a little under 1000 people polled. The results indicate that 88% of motorists across the nation believe adherence to the rules of the road is worse since 2015, which is consistent across provinces with results ranging between 83 to 100 percent. In Mpumalanga, for instance, 83% of drivers believe non-adherence is getting worse while in the Northern Cape and North West provinces, 100% of drivers hold the same opinion. “These results are actually quite breath-taking as they seem to indicate, once again, that most motorists believe the problems on South African roads are someone else’s fault. Given our country’s high Easter road fatality rate, this attitude implies not enough motorists are taking responsibility for their actions, which is worrying,” the AA noted. According to the results, just over 55% of motorists nationally believe visible policing on roads has also declined, with only 13 percent of respondents saying they think it has improved since 2015. Provincially, the picture looks like this. N/A answers were indicated as ‘I don’t know”, or ‘This does not apply to me’. Visible policing on the roads Province

“A more pragmatic approach is needed to deal with the issues on our roads. In addition to having more traffic officers on our roads, law enforcers need to be given the necessary resources to effectively do their jobs. But road safety doesn’t only reside with traffic officials; the entire justice system needs to be involved to ensure offenders are aware there are punitive consequences for their actions. And, road users must also play

PAGE 18

their part. Reckless and negligent driving is something every driver can avoid, but, it seems, too many are shirking their duty to be responsible motorists,” the AA lamented. In addition to the overall belief that abiding by the laws of the road has worsened, is a belief road conditions have also slid since 2015. Close on 61% of motorists nationally said overall road conditions have deteriorated over the past two years, with common problems being potholes, missing or damaged road signs, and faulty traffic lights. Overall road conditions, however, appear to be better in the Western Cape; 29% of respondents in this province said road conditions were getting better, compared to 38% who said they were getting worse. In Gauteng, only 10% said conditions were improving, while 67% said they are getting worse. Faulty traffic lights are also a major cause of concern, especially in metropolitan areas where faulty lights in the morning and afternoon add to congestion and traffic problems. Among the respondents, 45% said the situation with faulty traffic lights is worsening, while 40% said the situation remains unchanged. Close on 13% of respondents said the situation is improving. “This survey again highlights that too many drivers believe road traffic laws don’t apply to them, which, when combined with what is perceived to be lower police visibility, is perhaps part of the reason for our country’s high road fatality statistics. Unless driver attitudes improve, in addition to more effective policing, the carnage on South African roads will continue unabated.”

Nissan has a solution for driver distraction based on 180 year old technology Nissan Great Britain has adopted a technology that’s almost 200 years old to create a concept solution for reducing smartphone distraction at the wheel. The Nissan Signal Shield is a prototype compartment within the arm rest of a Nissan Juke that is lined with a Faraday cage, an invention dating back to the 1830s. Once a mobile device is placed in the compartment and the lid closed, the Nissan Signal Shield creates a ‘silent zone’, blocking all of the phone’s incoming and outgoing cellular, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections. The concept is designed to give drivers a choice about whether to eliminate the distractions caused by the millions of text messages, social media notifications and app alerts that are ‘pushed’ to smartphones each day. A growing problem, the number of drivers admitting to handling their phone in the car has increased from 8% in 2014 to 31% in 2016, according to the Royal Automobile Club in the UK. Users are becoming habitually more tempted to check text messages and notifications as they appear on their phone’s screen, even if they are driving. Nissan’s own research found almost one in five drivers (18%) admitted to having texted behind the wheel. All Nissan crossovers are available with Bluetooth connectivity to allow drivers to make and receive handsfree phone calls when it is safe to do so. NissanConnect, or Apple CarPlay on the all-new Nissan Micra, enable further integration with a phone’s apps. The Nissan Signal Shield concept provides optional connectivity, giving drivers the choice between being able to contact and be contacted from the road, or creating a ‘phone-free’ space and time. It means a digital detox and a drive that’s free of incoming distractions. If drivers want to listen to music or podcasts stored on their smartphone, they can still connect to the car’s entertainment system via the USB or auxiliary ports.

PAGE 22

The device will maintain wired connectivity even when in the Nissan Signal Shield compartment. To restore the phone’s wireless connections, drivers just need to open the arm rest to reveal the compartment – which can be achieved without taking eyes off the road or touching the phone itself – and the phone can reconnect with the mobile network and the car’s Bluetooth system. The Faraday cage, an enclosure made of a conductive material, such as wire mesh, blocks electromagnetic fields. It is named after the pioneering English scientist Michael Faraday, who invented it in the 1830s. Alex Smith, Managing Director, Nissan Motor GB Ltd.: “The Nissan Signal Shield concept presents one possible solution for giving drivers the choice to remove all smartphone distractions while driving. This is about delivering more control at the wheel, not less. Some drivers are immune to the activity of their smartphone, but for those who struggle to ignore the beeps and pings, this concept provides a simple solution in this very ‘connected’ world we live in.” RAC road safety spokesman Pete Williams said: “Our research shows that handheld phone use by drivers has reached epidemic proportions. As mobile phone technology has advanced significantly many people have become addicted to them. However, the use of a handheld phone when driving represents both a physical and mental distraction and it has been illegal (in the UK) since 2003. While it is not the only solution to reducing distraction on the road, it certainly is a novel one. It is also a lot easier than fiddling with a phone to switch it to “do not disturb” mode. No news yet on whether the feature will be availble in SA models.

Preparing SA for the fourth industrial revolution The discussions at the inaugural NAACAM show centred largely on the the so-called “Fourth Industrial Revolution or Industrie 4.0,” and now more local analysis is highlighting just how crucial education and innovation will be in keeping up. Speaking ahead of the Africa Automation Fair and Connected Industries conference, which will be held in Johannesburg in June, industry stakeholders noted that the paradigm shift being forced by Industrie 4.0 will demand that South African industries ‘unlearn and relearn’ in order to stay relevant. The Fourth Industrial revolution can be described as being built on the base created by the 3rd or the digital revolution, and is characterised by the fusion of physical, digital technologies and the biological worlds. “Industrie 4.0 is evolving at an exponential pace, starting with the industrial internet and manufacturing, and spreading to impact industries across the board.” The European External Action Service (EEAS), the EU’s diplomatic service and partner of the Africa Automation Fair, believes that the Fourth Industrial Revolution will demand the mass upgrading of the digital skills of workers. According to Massimo De Luca, the head of trade and economics at the delegation of the EU to SA: “Industrie 4.0 will create a shift from mass production to customised and creative solutions. Innovation and creativity will be key. Emphasis on education all the more necessary.” Oratile Sematle, President of Africa Automation Fair partner the Society for Automation, Instrumentation, Measurement and Control (SAIMC), notes that there is a growing focus on the emerging concept of the ‘innovation zero’. The latter is a concept that encapsulates the innovative solutions that are demanded by emerging socioeconomic forces, punctuated by a sense of morality and common good.

PAGE 24

“These are innovative solutions that seek to achieve for example, zero waste/emissions (e.g. petrochemical industries), zero defects (e.g. manufacturing), zero breaches of security (e.g. cyber security), zero accidents (e.g. self-driving vehicles) etc. These are areas of business that require a greater paradigm shift in the space of automation. For example it is expected that selfdriving cars will dominate the transportation industry as early as 2025.” As a catalyst and the driving force behind transformation of the automation industry, SAIMC says it will focus on priorities including seeking the registration of automation as a separate engineering discipline; working with tertiary institutions to align education and training to the needs of industry; and working with SABS in customising industry standards for the South African environment in a changing landscape. Hanli Goncalves, conference director of the Africa Automation Fair and Connected Industries conference, says South African stakeholders must adapt in line with the Industrie 4.0 revolution. “Industrie 4.0 is changing the face of industry and is a key topic across the US and Europe at the moment. To help fast-track change locally, we are bringing leading European experts to South Africa to update South African public and private sector players, large manufacturing and processing plants, and the petrochemical, automotive and mining sectors on Industrie 4.0 trends and best practice internationally.”

Automating and optimising inventory management helps satisfy customers

- Gary Brooks

You’ve worked diligently to optimise and automate nearly every part of your supply chain. And, when a customer arrives to a shop for a repair, the mechanics they interact with are highly knowledgeable and determined to help. But, what happens if you aren’t stocked with the correct part to make the needed repair? The benefits are abundant. A single solution provides an integration with multiple – if not all – service dealer management systems within a network. Allowing service shops to have this kind of visibility into other locations ultimately impacts business in several positive ways, including the ability to quickly locate a necessary spare part to make a repair for a customer in-store that day. If service dealer A can see that service dealer B has the necessary part in stock and they are only 25km away, for example, someone can retrieve that part and eliminate the guess work or need to contact a manufacturer, saving time and money, and most importantly, providing the customer with a great experience.

Every aspect of your business should have the end customer in mind, but repair services are arguably the most crucial components to the customer experience. For service dealers in particular, this area of business not only serves as a consistent “face” to your company – the individuals interacting with your customers on a regular basis – but also can be a key component to improving financial performance for your business as a whole. Too often, your brand’s main ambassadors are left providing unsatisfactory excuses as customers are told a necessary part is not in stock to make the repair – leading to an inconvenienced and dissatisfied customer, and lost revenues. In a situation that is already stressful for your customer, regardless if the maintenance is routine or unexpected, you want to ensure that you are stocked with the correct part to make the repair within a reasonable amount of time. So, how can you ensure every time a customer comes in for a repair, you can reply with “Yes, we have that part in stock”? Fortunately, technologies exist to manage spare parts and make these bad customer experiences a thing of the past. The key to successful technology, however, is a powerful integration engine that connects multiple inventory networks onto a single platform. Now, what exactly are the benefits of a single technology platform? First, keep in mind it’s imperative to be able to monitor, trace and optimise your aftermarket business processes, incorporating real-time data from multiple sources – and this is something that only a service dealer inventory management system is able to provide.

PAGE 26

Additionally, the proper technology will allow for efficient redistribution of stock. Taking into account inventories from multiple service dealers, the system analyzes demand, what’s been sold and what hasn’t, and redistributes spare parts to dealers that are most likely to sell and use the parts in their own shops. This ultimately keeps inventory costs down for both manufacturers and dealers, minimizing the amount of inventory initially purchased. Not only does technology allow for stock redistribution, but also provides automated forecasting, enabling businesses to move beyond spreadsheets and guesswork, to a system that will tell them exactly which parts they should have in stock and when. This creates less work for service parts managers, and also provides the end customer with that awesome experience they crave when the part needed to repair their car is in stock and makes the process quick and efficient. Finally, sophisticated technology typically allows for a buyback programme, which lets manufacturers take back unsold inventory originally provided to service dealers. Of course, there are parameters they need to operate in, but buyback programmes allow these service dealers to focus more on processes and demand instead of line-by-line orders, saving a lot of administrative time and building trust between the manufacturer and dealer. Manufacturers owe it to their service professionals to empower them with the right tools to deliver the superior experiences today’s customers expect and demand. And, automating and optimising inventory management is the best way to achieve this. Ensure the customer experience is amazing at every interaction to achieve lifetime loyalty.

Cars making life-saving decisions? Mike Whitfield, MD at Nissan South Africa has released an article to the motoring media that discusses the future of cars – and how they may just be able to save your life. However, ultimate control and responsibility remains with the driver. In fact, should the driver remove their hands from the steering wheel, a warning light will come on and an alarm will sound. The system will literally deactivate until the driver places their hands back on the wheel. The day is fast approaching, though, when completely driverless cars will become a reality. When that day comes, the question of who takes control in an emergency situation will need to be answered.

Autonomous driving technology is developing at a rapid pace. Business Insider publication’s research platform has forecast that there will be around 10 million cars with various self-driving features on the road in the UK by 2020. But the closer we get to our ultimate goal of completely driverless cars, the more critical it becomes for manufacturers to ensure it’s safe for us to place these vehicles on the road. It’s no secret that autonomous driving technology has the ability to change lives and to save them. Not only is this technology expected to reduce serious traffic incidents – the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) predicted that in the UK accidents would reduce by 25 000 a year by 2030 – but it will also make automotive transportation available to people who were previously unable to drive. But as advances in autonomous driving technology continue, so important questions around the complexity of having these vehicles on the road continue to arise. For example, how can drivers learn to trust autonomous vehicles? How will vehicles communicate with drivers and alert them to the presence of other vehicles on the road? And, what actions will vehicles take after identifying objects, signs and other road infrastructure such as painted lanes? Can driverless cars handle unpredictable situations? One of the biggest questions around the safety of this technology is what would happen in an unpredictable situation? Would the system make the right decision and navigate the vehicle through the scenario safely? At the moment the autonomous driving technology used on roads is not fully autonomous. Nissan’s ProPILOT, still requires a driver to be present and ready to take over the control of the vehicle at any moment. The technology, which launched and went on sale in Japan last year, enables cars to drive autonomously is a single lane, including in heavy stop-and-go-traffic. It’s the first time that a combination of steering, acceleration and braking has been operated in fully automatic mode, easing the workload of the driver in heavy traffic.

PAGE 28

Particularly a situation in which the technology would be required to make an ethical decision. For example, the decision to swerve and avoid hitting a pedestrian might endanger the passengers within the vehicle. How does the technology discern the right course of action in this instance? Not surprisingly, the inability of autonomous vehicles to ‘handle’ these unpredictable situations is one of the major stumbling blocks to a future of fully autonomous driving. The good news, however, is that SAM has the ability to solve this problem. Nissan’s Seamless Autonomous Mobility system (SAM) can navigate unforeseen situations such as accidents, road construction and other obstacles. Ultimately, SAM will help us realise a future in which autonomous cars can operate safely and smoothly. Basically, SAM is smart enough to know when not to navigate a potentially dangerous situation by itself. Let’s say while driving you encounter an accident scene at which police are using hand signals to direct traffic, possibly against the normal rules of the road. In this scenario SAM will bring your vehicle to a safe stop and request help from the command centre. This request is passed on to a mobility manager – an actual person who is using vehicle images and sensor data (streamed via the wireless network) to assess the situation, decide on the correct action, and create a safe path around the obstruction. The mobility manager paints a virtual lane for the vehicle to drive itself through. Then once it clears the accident scene, the vehicle again resumes full autonomy. The great thing about SAM is that it’s able to learn from experience – and as autonomous technology improves, vehicles will require less assistance from the mobility managers. This technology will literally speed up the introduction of autonomous vehicles to our roads by decades.

Automechanika Johannesburg 2017 Innovation Awards Competition Invitation to Innovators to enter this Prestigious Competition - Innovation Driving Business in a competitive market Entries are open for Automechanika Johannesburg’s 2017 Innovation Awards. Winning products will receive winning treatment at the automotive aftermarket’s event of the year that takes place at the Johannesburg Expo Centre Nasrec, 27-30 September. Product innovation is what helps to drive the 15 Automechanika automotive trade fairs which take place around the world – and what better way to celebrate the fact in South Africa than by honouring the best of the best at this year’s Automechanika Johannesburg 2017 event. The event serves as a gateway to the African automotive aftermarket , targeting trade visitors from sub-Saharan Africa and is the largest trade fair of its kind on the African Continent. The 2017 event is distinguished by the co-location of a business to Business Shows REIFEN (Tyres), Futuroad Expo (Trucks/Buses/Commercial Vehicles ) and Scalex Johannesburg ( Logistics and Materials Handling), presenting a 4 Shows -in -one concept that makes participation by exhibitors and trade visitors a no-brainer imperative. This is where the industry will meet and engage! The aim of the Innovations Awards Competition is to find the best aftermarket products in South Africa and utilise Automechanika Johannesburg 2017 as the platform to honour the winning items. Entries will be judged by an independent jury of automotive experts who, in defined categories, will score products considered ground breaking from a variety of perspectives. The jury will look to uncover items that hold the promise of performing beyond expectation, that are innovative and promote efficiency, are perceived to represent good value for money, are of excellent quality and bring fresh perspectives to the OE or aftermarket segments in which they compete. Functionality, practicality, styling, benefits to users, environmental friendliness and other perceived pioneering qualities are among the specifics that jury members will be searching for. The experts will come from the ranks of local aftermarket and automotive focused organisations, including the RMI, NAACAM, NAAMSA and the automotive media. For the 2017 competition, the jury will evaluate entries across a variety of automotive categories: Parts; Accessories; Automotive Systems; Diagnostics; Tuning; Repair and Maintenance; OE Products & Services; IT and Management; and Service Station & Car Wash. If you manufacture, distribute or supply cutting edge products in any of these categories, consider entering the Awards.

HOW TO ENTER: Prospective entrants are invited to submit by noon on Wednesday, July 26, photographs and a detailed description of any automotive aftermarket or OE product they have developed, manufactured, imported or distributed in South Africa, which they deem worthy of entry into the Automechanika Johannesburg Innovation Awards 2017. Based on the photographs and descriptions – which must include information relating to the technical characteristics and aftermarket relevance of each product – jury members will individually rank each item. From the returned scores, products which achieve the highest marks on a collective basis will be deemed to be finalists. Representatives of the companies whose products have been selected will be asked to submit by Wednesday, August 30, two examples of the items for physical scrutiny by jury members. Following that evaluation, the winners will be determined on the basis of highest marks scored on a collective basis. The organisers of Automechanika Johannesburg have arranged for exhibits of the winning products – along with those selected as runners up – to be highlighted in a separate display at the show under an Innovation Awards banner. Presentations will be made to winners at a prize-giving ceremony which will form part of the Show’s official opening on September 27. If you would like to enter The Automechanika Johannesburg 2017 Innovation Awards Competition,, submit by e-mail your product motivations, along with hi-resolution pictures of the items at least 1Mb in size, to wynter@thefuture.co.za. The description of each product must include its country of origin, when it was introduced to the South African market, the category of the aftermarket at which it is aimed – Parts; Accessories; Automotive Systems; Diagnostics; Tuning; Repair and Maintenance; OE Products & Services; IT and Management; Service Station & Car Wash – as well as the following: • Perceived innovative quality; • The solution the product aims to provide; • Its functionality and user benefits; • Perceived economic efficiency; • Safety aspects it promotes; • Environmental aspects it promotes; • Its relevance to the aftermarket or OE; Don’t forget to include with your entry your name, e-mail address and telephone numbers, along with those of the company you represent. The names of jury members and the organisations they represent will be made public once the panel has been finalised. Credit and financing – a tricky time for SA businesses The current local economic situation continues to place severe pressure on many SA businesses. As a result, many companies may find themselves in a difficult position when it comes to managing their credit. According to chief executive of Debtsource, Frank Knight, the recent ratings downgrade could see banks clamp down on providing financing and loans, in turn propelling companies to seek credit from their suppliers in order to strengthen their business opportunities. This scenario has massive implications, which need to be fully understood.

supplier; it would serve it well to negotiate payment terms from 30 to 60 days. By so doing, theoretically it can add an extra R200 000 into its cash flow which can go a long way to

“Companies often rely on banks to finance their businesses or obtain trade debtor finance. Usually it is a combination of both. When companies can’t get financing from those sources, the demand for trade credit increases. While that in itself is not an issue, it is paramount that companies make sure that the credit granting process is well managed,” says Knight.

Insurance implications

With companies exposed to an increasing demand for credit facilities and extension to their customers, Knight emphasises that creditors really need to know what they are doing. The sad reality is that many companies go under despite showing a profit. “Often, the problem is that businesses are unable to get their customers to pay timeously. If businesses get their credit decisions wrong even though they’ve got everything else right, the businesses could suffer as a result,” he adds. Knight points out that there are two key considerations that businesses need to consider during this time. “Firstly, companies need to look at their own credit processes and how they extend trade credit to other companies. This involves conducting a thorough check on who you are dealing with, setting appropriate credit limits and making sure that there are clear policies, and adherence to them, on credit extension,” says Knight. “Secondly, companies need to maximise their terms of payment. If a business has a R200 000 account with its

PAGE 32

enhance business activities and help entities stay afloat during this negative economic cycle.

While it is not common that insurance cover for trade credit would increase during periods of economic turmoil, there are instances where increases may be a consideration. Typically, insurers are more loathe to approve transactions under such circumstances due to the belief that there may potentially be more bad debts in the market, so they tend to be very cautious about the insurance applications they approve. “In the current economy it is fair to say that it is going to be more difficult to get trade credit insurance but not necessarily more expensive. However, recent developments in the credit insurance industry mean that you can now select individual debtors to insure rather than a collective policy, and so business transactions that pose an initial risk can be covered separately to the rest of your clients. Options available for example in such cases would be the selected debtor insurance offering recently announced by The Hollard Insurance Company.” The credit extension facility relies heavily on how successfully the trade credit is managed throughout. “It doesn’t have to be daunting – work with experts who can help you manage the process from start to finish, as well as advising you on the best credit insurance policy to keep you secured,” concludes Knight.

NEASA slams proposed new steel tax The SA Government recently notified the World Trade Organisation that it intends to introduce a 12% safeguard duty on top of the existing 10% customs duty – totalling a 22% tax on imported hot rolled steel. According to Gerhard Papenfus, Chief Executive of the National Employers’ Association of South Africa (NEASA), this decision by Government is in direct conflict with the findings of the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC). The latter is a statutory body specifically tasked to investigate and advise Government on the impact of import duties on industries. ITAC recently published an essential facts letter in which they found that the introduction of a safeguard duty is not in the public interest. The question according to Papenfus is: why would Government decide to protect ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA)? It is a primarily foreign-owned entity, and protecting AMSA is to the detriment of almost ten thousand South African owned downstream steel manufacturers. Thats without mentioning the hundreds of thousands of employees currently employed in the steel downstream? Further questions hang in the air: • What was discussed during the meeting between the owner of AMSA and the president, a meeting which caused a total turnaround in attitude by Government towards a monopolistic AMSA?; • And what is the effect of AMSA’s recent Black Empowerment deal on current developments? • How do the envisaged safeguard duties fit into the scheme of making AMSA profitable, even with the burden of its new equity partners? • At the same time, does the downstream have to pay for it? Papenfus asserts that during prosperous times, when steel prices were high, and coupled with a lucrative import parity pricing arrangement, the owners of AMSA took billions of Rands out of the country. This he continues was instead of investing in a modern mill capable of producing high-quality steel at much cheaper prices. Papenfus says the effect of this is that AMSA’s antiquated plant produces hot rolled-base steel at $550/ton, while the world is trading at $460/ton. He claims that when the price of steel hit rock-bottom at $250/ ton two years ago, many mills around the globe were in trouble. Currently however, at $460/ton, most modern mills have returned to profitability. Older technology mills also utilise 60 percent more electricity compared to modern mills. These reasons are only some of the factors he sees making it impossible for AMSA to be profitable in a modern global steel environment. However, instead of fixing this and making themselves more profitable, it appears that they are afforded Government protection.

PAGE 34

If this arrangement does exist it will ensure that AMSA does not need to adapt to what is globally dictated and what the steel downstream needs; and further says Papenfus “this arrangement will dictate to the downstream how to adapt to a monopolistic AMSA’s needs.” He acknowledges the argument of those who say that, unless AMSA get protection, they will have to close their steel mills. “Our view is that this is a decision AMSA will have to make. They have to adapt to the needs of the downstream, not the other way round. They’ve made the profits, now is the time to invest” he says. They should not be doing patchwork to keep the old plants alive, but rather building new competitive plants. If that is not what they want to do, he suggests to them that they cut their losses and close whatever is not profitable. AMSA loyalists believe that if AMSA goes, China will dictate their terms to our downstream. This is because there are many competing steel mills in China. “And who dictates that the downstream must buy from China?” he asks, pointing out to the example of Vietnam whose steel industry grew multiple times since 2000. “In the Vietnam scenario there was no dominant supplier but duty free access to cheap raw material from the rest of the world. Why can’t we follow that example? Is the only excuse that such an arrangement will hurt AMSA?” Papenfus is adamant that the added levy is scrapped: “Let us again make this very clear; the steel downstream does not only demand that the latest move to have safeguard duties introduced be withdrawn, but in addition we remain absolutely firm in our demand that the 10 percent customs duties also be scrapped – it does not help AMSA and it only serves as a slow poison to the already struggling downstream.” His view is straightforward: “The steel downstream cannot, and will not, accept a ‘steel capture’ situation - where all South Africans are forced to pay more for steel products in order to benefit AMSA and a few individuals.”

Easter road fatalities lead to proposed 24/7 policing Just after the Easter weekend, the Minister of Transport Joe Maswanganyi, released the holiday weekend road fatality statistics in Pretoria. Later that day, the AA released its commentary on the statistics, calling the numbers “greatly concerning. Together with many other motorists and commentators, we at AutoForum feel that all every year the Department of Transport “notes” the holiday death toll. The AA comments on how bad the figures are and very little happens from there. All the talk leads to very little change. We could pretty much run the same story and edit the numbers after each holiday period.

“This is a hugely positive step, and is encouraging in light of the country’s high road fatality statistics. According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation’s (RTMC) statistics, about 55 percent of crashes occur between 6pm and 6am, when, traditionally, there has been limited coverage by traffic officials.

When are the powers that be actually going to look at their strategy and admit that it is failing? All anybody needs to do is travel the N3 on any given day to witness the disgraceful way that drivers and vehicle owners treat road safety.

The logic obviously goes that having traffic officers on duty during this time may lead to positive results, and this move could be the first step to dealing with the carnage on our roads.

And no - its not just about speed. If one looks objectively at the volume of passengers and pedestrians who die each holiday, it is clear that we cannot simply mimic other countries efforts. Our drivers in general seem to have complete disdain for the lives of those they transport - even when they are their own children. Our situation needs new ideas and progressive action. Really urgently. So it was at least a bit more positive to receive the AA’s latest press release announcing new plans for 24/7 traffic enforcement. The AA has welcomed the newly announced plans to declare traffic law enforcement an essential service, and thereby enable a 24-hour working schedule for traffic law enforcers. The Department of Transport’s budget vote was delivered in Parliament in May by Minister Joe Maswanganyi. According to reports, the plans include a two-fold approach to increase the number of law enforcers on public roads and to declare traffic law enforcement an essential service. This will enable the department to ensure the availability of traffic officers on a 24-hour basis, every day of the year.

Apart from more traffic officers, and extended working hours, the Association said it is important for the department to educate drivers on the need for compliance. It noted that without the public understanding the consequences of non-compliance with traffic laws, the current situation of disregarding the laws would continue. Lets hope that the minister and law enforcers realise that this does not mean more lurkers hiding in bushes, but rather active engagement with drivers, and especially harsher policing of non roadworthy and dangerous vehicles. The Association also welcomed the Minister’s remarks that his department would focus on maintaining provincial and national road networks, and improving public transport for rail and road commuters. This, the AA said, was especially welcome news given that there are moves to subsidise, in part, this public transport. “Making public transport more readily available is also relevant in a country where public transport can become more widely used because of the rising costs of personal vehicle ownership. And it will, for instance, make it easier for children to get to and from school without having to rely on unscrupulous operators who use un-roadworthy vehicles, or who drive without having the proper licenses,” the AA concluded.

TransUnion launches Auto Prefill for short term vehicle insurers TransUnion has announced the launch of its Auto Prefill solution intended for the underwriting of cars in the short-term insurance market. The company explains that the new solution offers a quick, easy and convenient vehicle insurance quoting process for both the consumer and the call centre agent.

COMMERCIAL

Auto Prefill is an integrated solution that incorporates several transactions and products into one call, enabling quicker verification during the quotation stage to improve pricing and risk selection. At the same time, it minimises abandoned quotes and improves conversion rates.

PAGE 36

Samuel Tayengwa, TransUnion’s senior insurance product consultant for Africa, explains that Prefill, when combined with DecisionEdge - a flexible suite of data analytic and decisioning solutions - helps call centre agents proposing relevant and tailored solutions to clients.

“With TransUnion’s single-inquiry solution, the call centre agent now has access to output that includes details like the Vehicle ID Number (VIN), model and make, year and colour as well as vehicle values simply by entering the vehicle registration number.” Auto Prefill saves insurance providers time and money by reducing call time and an improving data accuracy. There is also a tangible improvement in customer service, and instead of the client spending more than 30 minutes on a call to get an insurance quote, the entire process can now be completed in approximately 15 minutes.

Engen kicks off its Driver Wellness programme in the Eastern Cape Engen has kicked off its Driver Wellness programme - a mobile health awareness initiative run by Thubelihle Occupational Health & Wellness - at the Cape Road Convenience Centre in Port Elizabeth. The initiative is aimed at positively impacting bulk truck driver operators and continues to increase driver participation in free voluntary health screenings and improved health scores. During the period April to October, the programme will cover 21 sites in five provinces. Engen Driver Wellness celebrates its 6th year in 2017 and is operated nationwide at Engen Truck Stops and retail service stations, where drivers are offered free voluntary screenings in mobile clinics. These are conducted by qualified nurses and councillors and includes testing for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, tuberculosis, BMI (Body Mass Index) and HIV/AIDS. The company’s Corporate Social Investment Manager, Mntu Nduvane commented: “Education helps to remind drivers and our employees why their health is important and how life choices impact on their well-being. Ultimately this increases their health, safety and productivity.” “There has been a marked increase in the amount of individuals using the services we provide which is a clear indication that this intervention is making a difference to the wellbeing of drivers and will ultimately lead to a healthier industry.” The programme organisers believe that as testing is voluntary, the incremental acceptance of health management as a path to longevity and wellbeing are important indicators that health empowerment is gaining traction. Given the long and lonely hours long haul drivers spend on the road and the stresses associated with the job, these interventions form a critical pillar of support.

PAGE 38

“Our most recent statistics show how cholesterol screening jumped by 63% from 2014 to 2015. Glucose testing went up by 18.5% and 16% more drivers tested their Body Mass Index (BMI), while blood pressure screening also realised an increase of 16% for 2015. HIV and STI testing rose by 16% between 2014 and 2015 and TB Screening saw a 15% upsurge, “ added Nduvane. “Engen’s Driver Wellness campaign continues to have a massive all-round impact. This includes both on the drivers and their families, who benefit from reduced exposure to diseases and greater longevity of a breadwinner, and of course on the company itself, in terms of improved worker productivity, skills retention and disease management.” The programme for the remainder of the year is as follows: Progress Service Station

Fleet management: Embracing change enables flexibility and efficiency Dealing with the usual business-cycle and strategy fluctuations is difficult enough for any executive, but fleet managers have to stay upright while the entire foundation of the profession is shifting underneath their feet, due to rapid and unrelenting technological advances. Under such circumstances, only those who expect and prepare for change will survive,” says Dr David Molapo, Head of Standard Bank Fleet Management, “And those who embrace change and make the most of it will thrive.” Arguably, the greatest changes of the last few years have come from the astounding progress in fleet management technology, mostly in the form of telematics. It is as if fleet managers can now see right into the cabin of the driver, even under the hood while the vehicle is on the road - immediately and in real time. Risky decisions have to be made about when to adopt new technology - too soon and you get blamed for squandering scarce company resources, too late and you get blamed for making the company lose market share to more edgy competitors. Not only do top executives have to be convinced into accepting the new systems, but virtually everyone else in the company too, including the drivers. Telematics produces a flood of data that threatens to overwhelm fleet managers. But the right approach to the telematics revolution remains excitement, says Dr Molapo. “Enthusiasm for the super-efficiency that it has suddenly put within reach of every fleet is what makes modern fleet managers thrive.” Although probably the most profound for now, telematics is only one of the changes fleet managers need to expect and embrace. Dr Molapo lists some of the others: • Changing ownership models: Fleets in large parts of the world have moved to leasing or rentals as the primary ownership model for their vehicles, but in South Africa we still cling to full ownership. In various instances, it is cheaper and more efficient to enter into full maintenance or operating rentals than to own. • Changing fuel prices: Fuel prices fluctuate continuously and as a significant contributor to fleet running costs, it

PAGE 40

is worthwhile to always have a strategy to reduce fuel consumption - through better driver behaviour, good maintenance management, the combating of fraud and pilfering, and, of course, considering fuel efficient vehicles. • Changing vehicle technology: It is a certainty that new models are always more fuel efficient than the last generation. This is a major factor in purchasing decisions, together with the constant improvement of safety and durability. Although the current changes are much more incremental than those brought about by telematics, revolution is in the air. It is only a matter of time before electrical vehicles make a serious entry into the market, and these will almost certainly be followed by various levels of self-driving cars. Expect much decision-making agony in years to come, but also excitement. • Changing staff outlook: Prudent fleet managers are learning fast not to take their drivers for granted and to be on the lookout for new recruits, who are suitably qualified. Fleet managers who do not constantly sharpen their people management skills risk facing a high turnover of drivers. • Changing regulations: Changes to road traffic regulations have resulted in greater accountability to those people who hire transport companies in regards to accidents. This means that many road freight fleets will now have to adopt more formal safety procedures and systems in order to convince clients that they are safe to hire. • Changing road conditions: One can argue about whether the potholes are winning the race against newly tarred surfaces, and toll roads against open routes. The fact is, in a developing country like South Africa, roads change all the time, and prudent route planning is an important tool of the nimble fleet manager. “It’s clear that change is on the way. But - paradoxically - it is a constant factor that every manager must try to predict and manage in order to move their business, employees and, most importantly, clients forward every day,” concludes Dr Molapo.

Toyota tests fuel cell truck in the U.S. Toyota says it has supersized its commitment to zero exhaust emissions by adapting its advanced hydrogen fuel-cell technology for use in heavy-duty trucks. The company has incorporated its proprietary fuel-cell technology from the ground-breaking Mirai passenger car into a strong yet silent power source for a 36-tonne semi-trailer. The Project Portal will see the automaker use the concept truck to conduct a feasibility study into the potential of fuel-cell technology in heavy-duty applications. The hydrogen-fuelled truck will haul cargo between the bustling ports of Los Angeles in the United States and nearby Long Beach - “quietly, quickly and without producing any tailpipe emissions”. The fully functioning heavy-duty truck boasts the power and torque capacity to transport cargo between the two ports, while emitting nothing but water vapour. The truck generates more than 500kW of power and almost 1800Nm of torque from two Mirai fuel-cell stacks and a 12kWh battery.

The concept’s gross combined weight capacity is more than 36.2 tonnes and its estimated driving range is 320km per fill, under normal drayage operation. Late in 2016, Toyota Australia unveiled a mobile hydrogen refueller that enabled three demonstration Mirai fuel-cell sedans to go anywhere in Australia that a conventional car can be driven. The local company continues to work with governments, industry and other key stakeholders in Australia to fast-track the development of the refuelling infrastructure required to support the widespread sale of fuel-cell vehicles.

Showtime Amr 2017 – bigger and better every time - Warwick Robinson

Auto Maintenance & Repair in Beijing continues to get bigger and better. AutoForum and BodyShop News were there to participate in another successful AMR at the New China International Exhibition Centre near Beijing’s Capital International Airport in April this year.

The opening ceremony served as a backdrop for an agreement of cooperation between CAMEIA and AIA from Canada. Both myself and Michel Malik were honoured to be asked to help in cutting the ceremonial ribbon for the official opening of the fair.

Auto Maintenance and Repair reconfirmed its position again as ‘Asia’s Biggest And World Top Three Trade Fair’, featuring a larger show, increased international participation and better services.

Walking around the halls it was interesting to note some important new exhibitor.s Akzo Nobel was the first of the big paint companies to join the show and according to AMR organisers, it was quite important in helping to develop the brand’s positioning within the Chinese market.

This year the show area exceeded 110,000 square metres hosting 1139 exhibitors, while receiving more than 58,000 visitors.

Showtime

On the morning of the first day on 30 March, long queues had formed on the venue square, with professional attendees from all over the world waiting to explore the fair.

PAGE 42

The opening ceremony returned after an absence of a few years. It featured a troupe of female drum players as a prelude to the official speeches and presentation of the Best Auto Maintenance and Repair Products and Best Repair Tools awards.

At the Celette stand, company president Pierre Nicolau also commented that it made sense for his company to do its first show on its own in Beijing. The team was pleasantly surprised at the number of visitors and the level of enquiries on the stand. Mirka’s stand had interesting pneumatic and electric sanding system offerings. Both systems use one of Mirka’s speciality products in their abrasive technologies – a sanding disc that comes at a premium but simultaneously offers productivity and savings, in the amounts of filler required, amongst others.

The one Abranet mesh disc has thousands of tiny holes making it a truly dustless system. While many shops prefer the pneumatic machines, the electric options from Mirka enable shops to expand rapidly and give choices for where air lines can have issues such as condensation, and so can affect productivity.

As in previous years, interested AutoForum readers will qualify for a VIP invitation to the 2018 show together with an offer of accommodation near the show, B2B matching and meeting room services, and even a tour of Beijing thrown in. Contact us directly for more information.

AMR2017 organisers provided various services to enhance the visitors’ show experience and interaction, such as 24-hour free access to internet, pre-delivery of visitor badge, exclusive VIP lounge, handy trolleys, souvenirs and more. The next show, AMR2018 will be held at the New China International Exhibition Centre (NCIEC) from 1 to 4 April 2018.

Autopromotec 2017 show report

- Warwick Robinson

This year’s Autopromotec in Bologna featured all new records with 1651 exhibitors, 689 of whom were international and an official attendance figure of 113 616 attendees. This represents a growth of 4% in exhibitors 6% more participating countries, and 9,267 more attendees than it had attracted previously. From the first morning’s opening ceremony, the show felt extremely busy – it is a widely spread out venue, but in each hall we experienced high foot traffic and busy stands. Quality, innovation and internationalisation were the key elements focussed on at various conferences, which took place place over each day at the show. It was interesting to see statistics data on vehicle population, which is currently pretty stable with only slight growth in Europe. The big growth is naturally expected to come from China. To illustrate this phenomenon: figures show that Chinese automotive growth in the last 6 years is equal to the growth Europe experienced in the last 25 years! According to the speaker, all players are clear that the future growth is going to be shifting and focused on this Asian market. “It is already evidenced by the volume of investment into China from all large vehicle and component manufacturers.”

They are cognisant of this and actively working to take back their piece of the pie. China’s bucking of this trend is mainly attributed to its vehicle growth trends, which mean that a higher portion of vehicles are still in maintenance plans. It is clear that growth for the aftermarket has switched from Western European markets to the Chinese market - “this explosion in vehicle numbers is unprecedented in the sector’s history with such a growth surge in a single country. The average vehicle age in this market is only 4 years old - almost half the average age anywhere else.” Autopromotec was as usual well attended, interesting and engaging with many of the latest technology displays available for visitors to experience first hand. This included the “Officina 4.0” (Workshop 4.0) theme, which aims to align aftermarket trends to the so-called 4th industrial revolution.

It’s also important to note that only in Europe do diesel engined vehicles lead sales numbers, with the rest of the world markets still led by petrol engined vehicles.

Virtual and augmented reality offerings will become more relevant to both the sales and servicing side of the industry.

Also interesting is that France and the U.K. are still highest ranked in terms of DIY service - thanks in large part to the highest labour rates in those countries. However overall it’s most common across the board that, especially with older cars, that manufacturers continue to lose market share in the service sector.

Connectivity and communication with customers is seen as imperative, and we tried out a great system called ADDS (Accenture Digital Distribution Solution). While it offers the sales side of the industry VR features for enhanced sales Interaction, it also offers a multifaceted workshop to customer platform.

PAGE 46

Automatic sensors connected via the standard OBD interface in the vehicle, can pick up faults and alert the customer and workshop of the problem. A job ticket can be generated with a quote to the customer, and once accepted, it can slot the vehicle into the workshop schedule, allocating a particular resource. The repair technician then accepts the job ticket and the system keeps the customer updated with the progress and estimated time of completion. Trends in the auto service sector are centered on connectivity of the vehicles and service providers. Professional service providers need to focus on education, training as well as specialisation to provide value added services to their customer bases and to remain relevant. Marketing will also play an important role in driving consumers to one of the independent, franchised or manufacture-linked service offerings. Of all the presentations I attended, the common perception is that owners have become less interested in how the cars are maintained, but rather focus on the use and destination aspects of their vehicle. They want reliability, value and personalized service. Show organizers attribute the successful results of this year’s event to the attendance of so many leading exhibitors and overall data shows that this sector is still “growing strong” according to their official release.

Despite all this, one can’t help think that the future ownership models are being left out of the discussion. As platform based “on-demand” services increase in popularity in the service provider market – think Uber – growth in a similar on-demand self driven market is surely going to look more attractive to vehicle owners, and buyers, in the coming years. And to manufacturers. If, as I believe, this shift starts taking place to a model where on-demand leasing options ensure manufacturer sales, then where does it leave the independent aftermarket? If prospective buyers opt to buy a lease package from a manufacturer, which offers a mix of vehicle type to use as required over the course of a fixed term contract, they will effectively be leasing a vehicle from a manufacturer fleet and become “mobility users”. The manufacturer becomes the de facto lifespan owner of the car in terms of sales, service, maintenance and repair. In this scenario “mobility users” won’t have to worry about any servicing, maintenance or even upkeep. When something goes wrong they will simply get another car from the manufacturer’s fleet. In the case of an accident, the manufacturer will even need to deal with the collision repair as it will be their car to fix. I cannot imagine that vehicle manufacturers are ignoring these opportunities for their market share growth into the lifecycle of their vehicle ranges. I simultaneously don’t see where, if at all, the aftermarket is looking to address this possible game changer.

NAACAM kicks off inaugural show

- Clare Rutkiewicz

April saw the official opening of the first NAACAM Show in Durban, with big guns such as the Ethekwini Mayor, Zandile Gumede, Rob Davies of the Department of Trade and Industry, VWSA Managing Director Thomas Schaefer and many more dignitaries arriving for the inaugural event. The day was opened by NAACAM President Dave Coffey, who explained that it had taken almost two years for the event to come into being and was aimed at becoming the premier automotive component show in the country, as well as to guard and promote development within the local industry. Coffey explained that he saw several issues as key drivers in ensuring the South African auto component sector was able to thrive and potentially help solve a number of local economic challenges. These included: the creation of a sound automotive framework post 2020; sector regulation throughout Africa in conjunction with the African Association of Automotive Manufacturers (AAAM); maintaining SA’s global competitiveness through technology investment; and accurate measurement of the sector through statistical data gathering and analysis. In regards to this last point he acknowledged that the first annual report of this kind would be released soon. Other drivers included keeping up training and ensuring good employer/ employee relations. The Mayor of Ethekwini followed Coffey and welcomed delegates to the event. Responding to a question regarding the current Junk Status the country has received, Gumede said that fighting one another “would not solve the problem” but

PAGE 48

rather encouraged the sectors to work together. She added that the Ethekwini municipality was clear on its support of the auto sector. Ironically just days later she was criticised for her involvement in inciting the protests in the Durban CBD on Black Friday. (The KwaZulu-Natal High Court granted an urgent interdict against the eThekwini mayor after she threatened that people who marched against President Jacob Zuma on Black Friday would be arrested‚ referring to planned protests as being acts of treason. Times Live 06/04/2017) Rob Davies addressed the attendees after Gumede and confirmed the significance of the automotive sector to the South African economy, saying it contributed 7.5% of the GDP and provided 11 3000 direct jobs. Of those, 82 000 were in the component manufacturing sector (around 72%). He added that the component manufacturing sector is the most labour intensive. Davies believes that the framework for the sector beyond 2020 is critical. While the APDP has seen benefits for the sector, he believes component localisation remains at 38% - the target is 60% and the planning to meet this target is key. He highlighted the Australian Minister for Trade and Industry’s recent “abandonment of the auto sector” in that country and said that South Africa would not see the same trend. He called

on all members of the automotive industry in SA to look at the bigger picture and work together to contribute to country and sector’s goals.

Officer Mike Fanucchi, Nissan South Africa Head of SCM and Engineering Wayne le Roux and Shatterprufe Sales and Marketing Director Mike Ford.

In a media briefing after the opening, the three responded to the question regarding the country’s Junk Status title, saying that South Africa needed “to advance a more inclusive growth process in the manufacturing sector.” Davies also reiterated the need for SA to achieve 60% localisation as the average, not a minimum, for all local manufacturers.

After an extended break, the attendees then split into two sessions: The National Localisation Indaba and Tooling Capability and Development.

Volkswagen SA’s MD Thomas Schaefer was adamant that this target would penalise high achieving local manufacturers. He said that his company already achieved more than 70% localisation, while some others struggle to reach 30%. He added that the same goal should be set for all manufacturers, and that it would be unfair for some to achieve high localisation so that others could “slack off”, to achieve an average of 60%. “It’s unfair and unworkable.” The first day then continued with two separate streams of workshops for attendees to participate in. Day two’s opening address was delayed when keynote speaker Economic Development Department Minister Ebrahim Patel cancelled at late notice. The day was instead opened by Durban Automotive Cluster Chairperson Andrew Velleman.

The exhibition hall boasted good participation, however exhibitors overall found the first two days fairly slow. The final day was marred by city wide protests related to the Black Friday activities and this reduced attendance. Overall the event presented show goers with a very topical and pertinent choice of sessions and a good lineup of speakers. The discussions regarding Industrie4.0 and the forthcoming disruptions to our way of manufacturing, transporting, using and repairing vehicles were concise and informative. South African businesses are in dire need of the information and training many global players have access to, in order to keep up with the imminent changes, and we hope this information is filtered down to the smaller players to enable growth at all levels. We look forward to the next show.

The “Logistics and Supply Chain Management Session was thereafter facilitated by Grindrod Freight Services CEO, Bongiwe Ntuli and speakers included Transnet Chief Customer

Why a safety culture is so important in your workplace - Lori Lorenz

When I talk to employers, I get the impression that Workplace Health and Safety (WHS or OHS in SA) in their eyes is handing out yellow ‘high-vis’ vests to office staff when they enter the workshop and painting yellow lines on the floor. Whilst I do not discourage you from doing so, there are many other and probably more important things you can do to promote safety in your workplace. Spray gun adjustments impact the product - Alfred Thomas Spray gun adjustment and set up are both misunderstood and often argued over by painters. To start with, gun set up is different to spray gun

past 100 years, the design has been refined.

We will examine the gun types, how they work and their set up and adjustment. However, these are not the only areas that affect the final paint quality. Spray technique details including distance, angle, rate of travel and approach are all critical to achieving a good paint job. The birth of the spray gun Automotive spray guns were introduced in the early 1900s. The procedure we use today when spraying a vehicle was created by two people with vastly different needs. The first of these was Joseph Binks, a maintenance supervisor at Marshall Field’s department store in Chicago. Binks needed to paint multiple levels of storage basements with whitewash, a paint that didn’t last too long. It was a continuous job and he needed a faster way

(hand pumped) (Fig 1) in 1887.

Suction feed gun: This type of gun, an example of which is the famous Binks #7, has the cup at the bottom and uses high pressure to operate it. The air that passes over the venturi stem, which extends into the paint cups, creates a vacuum, pulling paint up to the gun for atomisation. This type of gun atomised the paint well, but because of its high pressure (50-70 psi), caused enormous amounts of overspray and waste. These guns have only a 25% to 30% transfer efficiency, thus wasting as much as 75% of the finish — a waste both in cash and harm to the environment. Another disadvantage with a gun that has a cup below, is that when painting a horizontal surface, the cup may drag in the paint if not held properly.

Both suction feed and gravity feed guns are among the most common found in production shops today.

painters often didn’t fully understand the adjustments they needed to make to fully take advantage of VOC/ material reduction and to provide an invisible repair. Often when painters applied high solids clear with fast hardeners (to increase production) using an HVLP gun, the texture was unacceptable. To combat the problem, paint gun companies developed “compliant” guns and petitioned to have them accepted in areas that restricted the use of non-HVLP. Though these guns have a transfer efficiency of 65%, they don’t have as high a transfer efficiency as HVLP guns, and thus do not save as much material as when an HVLP gun is used. Painters using a HVLP gun who choose the proper solvent and hardeners for the spraying condition, and adjust their

without needing to polish, in order to reduce texture.

The fluid cap is flush with the face, because the pressure to atomise the paint is supplied through the paint tank.

Gun set up Both HVLP and compliant guns used in the collision repair

Pressure-feed guns are remarkably efficient because they

air from the cap and airhorns (see arrows in Figure 6) hit the paint coming out of the needle area outside the gun.

PAGE 62

Atomisation Atomisation takes place outside of the gun as the air comes through the air cap and horns, and hits the stream of paint coming out through the needle and seat. Because of the higher solid content and the more viscous (thicker) the paint has become, the more critical the set up. Choice of the proper gun set up, through the correct sized needle and nozzle choice (to allow for proper adjustment to atomise the paint,) must be precise. This, too, can be confusing, because of an array of set-up recommendations. For a gun to be an HVLP, the air pressure at the cap cannot exceed 10 psi. With conventional and compliant guns, the pressure can be and often is much higher. Because of this higher pressure, the paint hits the object being painted at a higher speed and more paint bounces off, causing more overspray and a lower transfer efficiency. Another very important difference with HVLP spray equipment is the amount of air they need, not in pressure or pounds per square inch (PSI), but volume of air, or cubic feet per minute (CFM). As the name implies, an HVLP gun requires more airflow, or volume of cubic feet per minute of air, than a conventional gun. If airflow is restricted at any point, such as by the regulator, size of hose or the quick disconnect (QD) fitting, the needed CFM may not be available to operate an HVLP gun properly. Air hoses should have an inside diameter of 3/8-inch, with the regulator capable of supplying more volume than the gun requires; and the quick disconnect fittings should be large capacity. Though the two fittings shown in the photo both fit a 3/8-inch line, it is plain to see that the fitting on the right has nearly twice the size as the one on the left. The high volume QD fitting is absolutely necessary to supply the needed air for an HVLP gun.

As spray gun companies do not make guns for specific paint systems, they give a range of sizes, such as 1.2 to 1.6. A more precise recommendation is often available from the paint manufacturer, which will give specific sizes for different make and model paint guns for each different coating. Atomisation takes place in three stages: • Stage 1: As the paints leaves the gun at the nozzle, air from the cap and horns starts to combine with the paint. At this point the paint has been broken into large droplets, not yet fully atomised. • Stage 2: As the paint passes farther out from the cap, the air pressure continues to reduce the size of the paint droplets, and with the aid of the air from the air horns, it starts forming the elliptical spray pattern. • Stage 3: As the paint travels farther from the cap, the paint receives the full impact from the air horn air stream, where full atomisation and fan are formed. Distance can affect atomisation immensely. Gun adjustment Spray guns are designed to operate with the fluid adjustment knob set at fully open. However, that is under ideal conditions, which rarely exist. Knowing this, gun manufacturers provide adjustment controls such as the fluid needle, which regulates how far back the needle travels and can be adjusted to match the spraying conditions. The gun’s air adjustment is also critical and should always be set correctly before spraying a vehicle. Last is the fan adjustment that can limit the size of the spray pattern and is often set at fully open so the painter can get as much done as quickly as possible. It should be adjusted to match the area of the object being painted, to avoid excess overspray.

PAGE 63

travel and angle; but without having the proper set up and adjustment, it takes a lot of technique to compensate for a properly adjusted gun. Gun cleanliness, maintenance and proper paint reduction are also critical, and the gun and paint manufacturer recommendations should be strictly followed. Though a spray gun is a big investment and painters often invest in more than one gun, your gun or guns could last your entire career. Having the proper set up for the paint being sprayed and adjusting the gun for its optimum operation is critical. Look up the correct needle and nozzle set up for the gun brand being used and the paint being sprayed. This is best found through your jobber or paint manufacturer’s
