A-CLASS;
A-STAR Want to stand out from the crowd? Here’s the answer. A Mercedes A-Class With a grille that’s normally reserved for sport or higher spec models in the Mercedes range, this A-Class looks aggressive and purposeful. The profile is curved yet raking, and the back has a low, hunched stance. It’s aimed fair and square at a younger market that likes sporty hatchbacks. And with a starting price of £20,370 there is a serious opportunity for buyers to move into a premium class car. The engine range is steadily increasing. There are four diesel (1.5, a pair of 1.8s and a 2.1 litre) ranging from 109 - 170 bhp, and 4 petrol (pair of 1.6 litres, and a pair of 2.0 litre units). Trim is SE, Sport or two AMG options. Our pick of the range is the A180 CDi SE using a 1.5 litre diesel engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. This A-Class costs £20,775 and will appeal to business users because its emissions are rated at 98g/km and it will crack the 70mpg barrier. It’s lively too, taking around 11 seconds to hit 60mph and going on to a top speed of 118mph. In other words, sensible price for a premium car, zero road tax, low fuel bills and still having the sort of performance levels that the vast majority of us will ever hope to use. If you want extra performance and aren’t too worried about increased fuel consumption, the petrol engine A180 will be perfect. This especially applies if
you don’t do too many miles and are a private owner.
materials. The exterior style is carried through to the interior.
In terms of kit, gone are the days when you needed to head to the extras list to bring your Mercedes up to a reasonable level of equipment. This entry level A-Class CDi SE gets air conditioning, alloys, Bluetooth, low tyre pressure warning system, radio / CD with USB connectivity, collision prevention assist (a radar that senses driver fatigue and the danger of a collision) and a mutli-function steering wheel.
The A-Class is a rewarding car to drive. It has a sporty feel too. The ride is one of those preference things; if you like a comfortable, cruising sort of ride, then stick with the SE models and simply add any additions from the options list. If you prefer a more firm ride, then you’ll love the Sport / AMG models. Horses for courses in other words.
The interior is neatly trimmed with quality
Step up to a Mercedes A-Class.
For the money, this is one of the smartest 5-door hatchbacks around.

EVORA GETS RACY L O T U S
E V O R A
S P O R T S
R A C E R
If you’re a fan of Formula One, you’ll know that Lotus is back on song. Kimi Raikkonen is challenging for the drivers title and Lotus are gaining ground on the Red Bull team to be the leading constructor.
No surprise therefore, to find that Lotus is getting all racy when it comes to the sort of cars rolling off the assembly line in Norfolk.
0-60 in 4.6 seconds and on to 172mph. Staggering figures but easily attainable. The Evora Sports Racer really is that good.
The latest one to arrive is the Lotus Evora Sports Racer. This is one of the UK’s most potent sports cars. It also rates as one of the easiest sports cars to live with. You really can use a Lotus Evora as day to day transport. This is a car that delivers shattering performance and unbelievable handling, all wrapped up in a cabin that is comfortable, neatly trimmed and well equipped, and with a ride that is surprisingly forgiving. Oh, and it’s drop-dead gorgeous to look at.
The sound from the V6 engine is spine tingling. As for economy well, let’s face it, you don’t buy a Lotus if you’re worried about mpg. Anyway, for the record, if you go easily, you’ll get around 30mpg, but if you drive your Evora how it’s supposed to be driven, you can expect mid 20s. .
The Lotus Evora Sports Racer comes with a 3.5 litre V6 engine. The standard model develops 276bhp, while the supercharged S version develops a whopping 345bhp, hurling you from
Compared to the entry level Evora, the Sports Racer is loaded with goodies as standard. If you add the price of all the ‘extras’, it comes to over £11,000. In Sports Racer guise though, the price over the standard Evora only rises by a couple of grand or so, taking it to £58,850 for the normally aspirated model.
You get leather seats, reversing camera, cracking Alpine radio / CD / MP3 player, air con, sat nav, parking sensors, etc. You get a sports exhaust and a sport button that quickens the throttle response and raises the rev limit. You also get a pair of small seats in the rear…okay for kids but a bit tight for adults. They make handy extra storage space though. The Sports Racer is one of the most rewarding cars I’ve ever driven. If you enjoy driving, you’ll love this Evora. Stunning to look at, cosseting to ride in, comprehensively equipped and, when compared to the competition, good value. It’s available now at Lotus Newcastle. Go onto www.lotusnewcastle.co.uk, or give them a call on 0191 460 7204…or better still, call into their showroom and get ready to drool.

KIA GET SERIOUS
It wasn’t too long ago that Kia relied on value for money and a 7-year / 100,000 mile mechanical. Well, things have moved on. The warranty and value factors are still there. The Sportage range starts at £17,495, but now there’s much more to attract your interest. You can choose from a pair of petrol units (1.6 and 2.0 litres) and a pair of diesels (1.7 and 2.0 litres.) Trim choice doesn’t get any easier with levels being 1, 2, 3 and 3 Sat Nav. Simplsk. We’d recommend the1.6 GDi Sportage ‘1’. This is the model that kicks off the Sportage range.
0-60 takes 10.7 seconds; top speed is 111mph. You’ll get around 44mpg. Power goes via a 6-speed manual gearbox. If you want all-wheel drive, you’ll need to go for the bigger engines. There’s a smooth, soft ride, good handling and stacks of interior space. I reckon it looks rather snappy too. All models get a decent radio / CD / MP3 player with USB and Bluetooth. Controls are mounted on the steering wheel. You also get daytime running lights, rain sensing wipers, cornering lights, natty alloys, air con, electric windows, extensive safety and security kit etc. In other words, there’s now a whole host of reasons why Kia is worth serious consideration.
The unique 7 year warranty means KIA is a car for now and well into the future.

W H E R E D O U. S. N A V Y TEST PILOTS GO FOR THEIR WATCHES? THAT’S RIGHT, H E N L E Y- O N -T H A M ES . So let’s get this straight. The US Navy Test Pilot School, home to some of the world’s crack aviators, gets its watches from Henley-on-Thames? The home of cream teas, rowing and cute waterfowl? Actually, it’s not as daft as it might sound. Because Henley is also the home of a company called Bremont.
AutOh!_issue_two_v2.indd 9
The result is a chronometer with an adjustable 24-hour hand, that can display local time anywhere in the world, together with Universal Coordinated Time (the standardized time zone used by the military). Built by hand in our workshop, the mechanical movement undergoes an arduous testing process (something it has in common with its wearers) and is 99.998% accurate.
And, over the last ten years, we have developed watches for more than forty different squadrons, both here and in America.
The case is made from a stainless steel that’s seven times harder than anything you’ll find in conventional watches. (We bombard our steel with electrons to toughen it up.)
The US Navy asked us to design a timepiece for the elite pilots who train at their school in Patuxent River, Maryland.
Then we add not one, but nine layers of anti-reflective coating to the sapphire crystal for maximum clarity and hardness.
People who cross time zones about as frequently as the rest of us cross the street.
Some might call all this excessive. But it’s just the way we do things here in Henley-on-Thames.
Berry’s Jewellers Eldon Buildings 122 Grey Street Newcastle NE1 6JG
01912 210 152 berrysjewellers.co.uk
The question is, how do you get your hands on one of these fine watches? Well, if you’re between the ages of 17 and 34, and an American citizen, you can of course apply to join the US Navy. But if for any reason that proves problematic, you’ll be pleased to hear we manufacture a version for civilians, the Bremont World Timer ALT1-WT. For this, you need only apply within at your nearest Bremont retailer.

TREKKER CRACKER
Fancy a Fiat 500 with a bit of attitude? Try this….the new Fiat 500L Trekker. Based on the 500L it is the latest in the trend for ‘crossover’ vehicles. In other words, it’s a Fiat 500 that’s been raised and stretched. It’s a bit of an MPV, bit of an off-roader, but still very much a Fiat 500 at heart.
Prices start at £17,445 which strikes us at AutOh! as decent value for such an adaptable car. The height has been raised by 15mm over the standard 500L, it gets additional underbody protection, a clever traction control system and all-weather tyres on natty 17inch alloy wheels. Okay, it’s no mountain goat, but it’ll help you in dodgy weather and give you a commanding driving position which is handy around town. Town rather than country is where the
Trekker will spend most of its life, but it’s good to know that if the going gets tough, this Fiat 500L Trekker will help you through. Engines range from the 1.4 99bhp petrol and brilliant 0.9 litre 105bhp Twinair to 1.3 and 16 Multijet diesels. The latter is probably the pick…good performance (0-60 in 12 seconds) and great economy (60.1 mpg) It’s a hoot to drive, chunky to look at, comfy to sit in It’s a cracker.
Best Dad in the World? You will be with the new Fiat 500L Trekking. Arm your kids with the perfect playground verbal ammunition when you scoop them and all their mates up. This 5-seater cruiser has a range of features including beefy 17" diamond-finished alloy wheels with bold arches, tinted windows, City Brake Control, plus Traction+ for when the great British summer goes south. NOBODY IN THEIR RIGHT MINDS WOULD PUT A WATCH THROUGH THIS. BUT FRANKLY, MANY OF OUR CUSTOMERS ARE NOT IN THEIR RIGHT MINDS. Chances are, you’ve never had to eject from a fighter plane. It’s not much fun. (Though, it’s got to be said, the alternative is even less fun.) In the first second after ejection, your body is subjected to pressures of up to 30G. Ouch isn’t the word. Happily, most pilots get through their entire careers without having to exit through the cockpit. But the possibility is always there. And we built our aviation chronometer, the Bremont MB, with that in mind. A pilot’s timepiece, we reasoned, should be able to withstand everything the pilot does. High altitude. Low temperatures. And unscheduled departures at 500 mph.
AutOh!_issue_two_v2.indd 11
So we enlisted the help of none other than Martin-Baker, the pioneers of the ejection seat. (Thanks to them, more than 7,000 pilots have lived to fly another day.) At their headquarters in Denham, they subjected our watch to a punishing regime of vibration testing, the equivalent of 30 years’ flying. Shaken, but not stirred, it was then time for the ultimate test: the ejection seat. Strapped to the vinyl wrist of a crash-test dummy, our watch was shot from the cockpit again and again and again. Yet the Bremont lived to tell the time.
(We bombard the steel with electrons to toughen it up.) Inside this is a second case, held in place by a flexible ring that absorbs any shocks.
Do we stop there? Of course not. To ensure the Bremont MB can be read in all conditions we use Grade-A Super-Luminova® paint on the dial. Then add not one, but nine layers of anti-reflective coating to the sapphire crystal for maximum clarity.
We make the inner case from soft iron and it forms what’s known as a Faraday Cage, protecting the delicate mechanism inside from magnetic fields.
Some might call that excessive. We don’t think so.
The mechanism itself is assembled by hand in our workshop in Henley-on-Thames.
A pilot who’s just ejected from his aircraft may not know what day it is.
The movement is 99.998% accurate and has undergone an arduous fifteen day certification process conducted by COSC, the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute.
How? Well, for starters, the Bremont MB is encased in solid steel, seven times harder than the average watch case.
All of which goes to make a watch that will perform way beyond the call of duty.
Berry’s Jewellers Eldon Buildings 122 Grey Street Newcastle NE1 6JG

But thanks to the Bremont MB, he’ll always know what time it is.

EXTRA SPECIAL TOYOTAS Toyota have the knack of producing a steady stream of really good, high value models which follow the tried and tested method of adding some ‘extras’ as standard. In other words you add a host of goodies, give it a fancy name and, bingo, you’ve got a new model.
emissions. Performance is okay too. 0-60 takes around 14 seconds and the top speed is 96mph which means you get brilliant economy around town whilst still having sufficient oomph to let you cover long motorway journeys. Don’t assume that this is purely a city car. It isn’t.
system, front fog lights, extremely smart alloys, chrome detailing and a really clever roof design that makes it look as though it’s floating. Neat.
And with a price tag of £9,945 this is one very special, special edition.
Two prime examples are the Aygo Mode and the Yaris Edition.
This will be ideal if you need slightly more space when compared to the Aygo, but still want the usual Toyota qualities. I’ve always felt that the Yaris is like Dr.Who’s Tardis; the outside dimensions look compact but, inside, things are deceptively roomy. There’s a surprising amount of shoulder and leg room both in the front and the back.
And of course something else you get is Toyota’s reliability and 5-year warranty. There are also some excellent finance offers available on these cars. You even get 1 year’s free insurance. It’s certainly worth getting in touch with the dealership to check out how the figures stack-up.
The Aygo Mode is based on a standard Aygo but, along with the normal kit which includes a really good audio system that includes MP3 connectivity, you get the addition of rear privacy glass, additional airbags, smart alloy wheels, and natty LED daytime running lights. Power comes from the tried and tested 3-cylinder 1.0 VVT-i engine which, trust me on this, sounds absolutely brilliant. You’ll get 65mpg and, the best bit, zero road fund licence thanks to the low
Oh, and talking of special editions, here’s another Edition….the Yaris Edition. .
The 3-door Yaris Edition costs £11,795 which, as with the Aygo Mode, is really good value.
So, there we go. Fancy feeling a little bit special? You will in this pair of special Toyotas.
The engine is the same as that found in the Aygo so performance figures are roughly the same. The Yaris Edition 1.0 VVT-i gets all of the equipment found on the entry level Yaris but you also have rear privacy glass, upgraded sound

NUMBERS UP FOR PEUGEOT
One of the most popular cars in the Peugeot range is the 208. It looks good, drives well, comes in 3 or 5 door guise and rightly has a large following of loyal fans. Well now there’s another version… the Peugeot 2008. It’s largely based on the 208 but is slightly longer, wider and higher with a bigger boot and more headroom for adults in the back. In other words, it’s a more chunky looking 208 with extra elbow space. Have you been in the latest Peugeots? No….well, you’re in for a treat. Peugeot is not only upping their numbers, they’re also upping their game in terms of quality. The latest batch of new models from Peugeot has moved forward markedly in build quality and with the standard of materials used for the interior. This new 2008 is a prime example. There are neat styling touches outside with chrome trim, roof rails and fancy lights. There’s a hint of SUV about the
14
design. Inside, the look and feel of the dashboard, controls, seats, carpeting etc, gives a solid and expensive impression. All in all, this is a classy motor. With prices starting at £12,995, you got a lot for your money. You can choose from five trim levels and six engines. Entry level models get either a 1.2 VTi 5-speed petrol engine or 1.4 litre HDi 5-speed diesel, rising to a 1.6 petrol and a pair of 1.6 litre diesels which develop either 92 or 115 bhp in the more plush versions. The 1.6-litre e-HDi diesel is the most efficient engine in the range which, if you opt for the EGC automatic gearbox gives you low emissions, good performance and stunning economy. Go easily and you’ll get over 70 mpg. 0-60 takes around 12 seconds and there’s a top speed of 113mph. Put all of these figures into the mix and
you end up with a car that’s perfect for commuting, shopping trips, the school run, holidays with the family....in fact, it could be the perfect all-rounder. In terms of what it’s like to drive, the good news is that even though this 2008 Crossover sits taller than the 208 hatchback, it still handles really well. There’s more body lean than with the smaller, lighter 208, but it’s well controlled. If anything the ride is actually better than the 208 with a compliant ride around town but firmingup nicely on the quicker stuff. There’s plenty of room for an average family and the boot is a good size for all of the paraphernalia you’ll need for a holiday journey. The boot has a low lip which makes loading a doddle. So, there you go. 2008 is the latest number to appear in the Peugeot lineup. This is one number that really does add up.

SOMETHING FOR THE DIARY SIR?
3 Mercedes SL 65 AMG just arrived Here’s one of the most visually stunning machines in the Mercedes stable. AMG has breathed on the SL and produced a car that rockets to 60mph in 4 seconds and onwards to 155mph at which point the electronic limiter cuts in to stop you entering warp factor. But like other SL models, it will saunter along happily. You have to pay for the technology and the 6.0 litre V12 though. Coming in at £168,285, it is 80 grand more than the SL500 which is extremely capable in its own right. You decide whether the premium is worth it.
The rate at which car manufacturers now either launch brand new models or revamp current ones, is nothing short of staggering. It’s hard to keep up. More importantly though, you need to know when you’re shiny new set of wheels is going to be obsolete. We’ll give you a steer.
16
1 McLaren P1 arrives autumn 2013 916bhp, 3.6 litre V8 mated to an electric motor, 0-60mph under 3 seconds. It can corner at 2.0g on road legal tyres. The figures speak for themselves. McLaren don’t call the P1 a supercar; they call it a hypercar. 375 will be built. 200 have already been sold. All are left hand drive. Price £866,000. There is one option available…an additional battery charger. McLaren reckon it is the best driver’s car ever built. Ferrari will love that!!
2 Rolls Royce Wraith arrives September 2013
4 Porsche Macan early 2014 Okay, it’s just a sketch, but this is the Porsche Cayenne’s little brother. Mule models have been spotted in Germany and early indications are that this will be an SUV to rival the Range Rover Evoque. Prices will start at around £36,000 for entry level 3.0 litre V6 petrol models but, in a break with tradition from recent years, Porsche will launch a 4-cylinder model towards the end of 2014. Expect a diesel 2.0 litre as well. It’s got a lot in common with the Audi Q5, mainly because it shares a lot of mechanical stuff under the skin.
Don’t fancy the McLaren? For the same price you could buy 3 Rollers and have some change. For the first time since 1937, the name ‘Wraith’ will appear on a Rolls Royce. The new coupé will tip the scales at £235,000. Power comes from a 6.6 litre twin turbo V12. 0-60 will take around 4.5 seconds which is impressive for something that weighs the same as a battleship. It recently made its UK debut…as a shop display in Harrods window.

5 MG 3 arrives late 2013 The re-born, Chinese owned MG has struggled to make a mark in the UK, but things could be about to change. The MG 3 will be up against cars like the Mini and Vauxhall Adam and offer loads of customising options. Prices will start at a shade under £10,000 which is encouraging for a vehicle that’s actually Fiesta sized. The car is currently on sale in China, but the European models will have more kit, better interior and more styling touches outside. Initially there will only be a 5-door hatchback version. Could do well.
6 Vauxhall Insignia arrives October Shock horror. A new car is being launched that’s cheaper than the outgoing model. The entry level Vauxhall Insignia will start at £16,279. That’s over £1700 cheaper than the current model. More good news is that two new diesels are introduced producing 99g/km of CO2…a crucial figure for business users. Vauxhall reckon on 76mpg too. There was never anything wrong with the exterior styling but inside there is a complete revamp; the ride has been improved and the steering has more feel. Mondeo drivers now have a serious competitor.
7 Ford EcoSport arrives early 2014
8 Peugeot 308 on sale January 2014
Fancy a hunky Ford Fiesta? Here it is…the Ford EcoSport. It’s a small SUV based on the Fiesta. The car is currently on sale in Brazil and India. By the time it gets here it will have been completely revamped with plush interior, quirky styling touches outside and super-efficient engines. Starting prices for a turbocharged 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine version will be in the region of £14,000. There’ll also be small diesels including a 1.5 litre unit. Ford says its new SUV has 20 storage spaces, including a glovebox that doubles as a chiller unit. Woooo.
Don’t be fooled by the 308 number. There’s already a Peugeot 308, but this is a brand new car. It’s lighter, shorter and lower than the current 308 but it has more interior space, incredibly fuel efficient engines that will be brilliant for private AND business users, and has a totally revamped interior which, for the first time, features Peugeot’s new i-cockpit touch-screen control system. In other words, fewer knobs and buttons on the dashboard. If you want interior styling cues, take a look at the latest 208 and 2008 models. Peugeot have upped their game.
9 Honda Civic Tourer due December 2013 This is a studio shot of the new Civic Tourer but the version that arrives in Honda showrooms at the end of this year will look very similar. It boasts more space than the upcoming Golf Estate and some versions will feature adaptive suspension. Mechanically, it will be the same as the Civic hatchback. No prices have been released, but most estates are about £1000 more than the equivalent hatch / saloon. Honda wants to attract business users so you can expect a high-efficiency, low emission diesel to be included.

new C3 for 63
The new C3 broke cover at the Geneva motor show back in March and Citroen have got the cars into showrooms in plenty of time for the plate change. The Citroen C3 is one of the most instantly recognisable cars on UK roads. It has a style all of its own which actually belies its internal dimensions. It can cope with five adults and their luggage without any problems, but on the outside it still looks really compact. The latest C3 is available in 3 trim levels (VT, VTR+ and Exclusive). There are 4 petrol engines, two with high efficiency 3-cylinder engines, and 3 diesel engines. You can even opt for their new electronic automatic gearbox.
Well how’s this for timing. September 1st sees the arrival of the 63 registration plate and the full range of the brand spanking new Citroen C3 is ready and raring to go.
Prices start at £10,895. Here at AutOh! we reckon the best trim to go for is the VTR+. This gets you air conditioning as standard, along with height adjustment to both front seats, height and reach adjustment to the steering wheel which means you can’t fail to get a comfortable driving position; natty alloy wheels, daytime running lights and a quality audio system with MP3 connection which is operable from the steering wheel control button. As for the engine choice, it’s a simple equation. If you need your C3 to cover
a lot of miles every year, then the diesel engines will be worth the additional outlay. However, we suspect that most C3 owners will not be spending every waking hour dashing up and down the motorway. In this case, the 3-cylinder 1.0 litre and 1.2 litre petrol engines make much more sense. And they sound great. As with all 3-cylinder engines, you need to adapt your driving style. They rev for fun. You may initially feel that you have to drive the car quite hard. Not so. These engines are built to rev; they thrive on it. Resist changing up too soon and you’ll quickly find that you make good progress. The 68 bhp 1.0 litre C3 will easily return over 70mpg, but if you want additional performance go for the 82bhp 1.2 litre version. You can cover the 0-60 dash in around 12 seconds but still achieve 68mpg. Everything else is pure Citroen. Comfy interior, quiet ride, predictable safe handling, loads of grip and a truly relaxed driving experience. It will be equally happy as a long distance cruiser as it will be popping down the road for a pint of milk. The new C3 from Citroen. Perfect for 63. Go for a test drive and C for yourself.

SPORTY WITHOUT THE BILLS
June 2013 was another important milestone for Toyota in the UK because it marked the official start of production of another new model at their Derbyshire factory. If you want to buy British, buy a Toyota. The Toyota Auris Touring Sports gives the Auris a whole new image and the chance to attack a new section of the buying public. We Brits like estate cars. We’re not keen on 4-door saloons, but we can’t get enough of 3 and 5-door hatchbacks and their estate brothers. Having said all of that, the number of true estates is falling; the Auris Touring Sports is a typical example, hence the use of the word ‘ Touring’. It is really
an Auris with an extended load area aimed at those folk who need to carry additional baggage, sports equipment, holiday kit, or perhaps you have a small business and sometimes need to transport small loads. Having said that, the load space is best in class. Pull a lever, drop the seats and you can slide in a load up to 2 metres in length. This means you get a flexible car yet retain the stylish, raked outline. The Auris Touring Sports is a handsome beast… and….it is the only car in this section of the market that is available as a true hybrid. Toyota has mastered the art of hybrid cars and, with the Auris Touring Sports you get the very latest in technology. As with the Auris hatchback, you get a choice of Active, Icon, Sport and Excel trim and 1.3 or 1.6 litre petrol engines or a 1.4 litre diesel. The range starts at £15,595 for the Active 1.33 VVTi petrol . And then we have this Hybrid which tips
the scales at £21,495. It will be brilliant as either a family or business car because emissions are incredibly low (no road tax) and mpg is incredibly high (74.3mpg). Power comes from a 1.8 litre petrol engine mated to an electric motor. A CVT (continuously variable transmission) auto ‘box keeps the engine and electric motor on the boil when you need some power, but allows the electric motor to do the work on its own when the conditions allow. Performance is good too. 0-60 takes under 11 seconds and there’s a top speed of 109mph. You get air conditioning, alloys, cracking touch-screen audio system with DAB and USB connection; front fogs, electric windows all-round and a rear parking camera. So…check list… low bills, best in class load carrier, flexible, comfy, stack of goodies, quiet and stylish. Yep…that’s the boxes ticked.

MAJOR FUN MINI
Another plate change…another derivative of the hugely successful MINI. 2012 was MINI’s most successful year in the UK. I’ll be amazed if 2013 doesn’t set a new record. They can do no wrong. For crying out loud, they even do a commercial version; the MINI Clubvan. you can’t mistake it for the Paceman. It is, in effect, a coupé version of the Countryman. I think it looks brilliant. In terms of the technical bits and bobs, you can choose from either a pair of 1.6 petrol engines developing 122 or 184bhp, or three diesel engines (1.6 and 2.0 litre) 111 or 143bhp. You can have an auto box in the 111bhp diesel version and, apart from the smallest petrol model, you can even opt for 4-wheel drive. Prices start at £18,995, but the one we’re concentrating on, the Paceman Cooper D ALL 4, comes in at £21,400. Anyway, here is the latest passenger MINI…the Paceman. This is the 7th model to come out of the MINI stable and as with all of the others, it is instantly recognisable. Well, it is from the back and in profile. Up front, when you see it approaching in your rear-view mirror, it looks exactly like the Countryman on which it’s based. Once it draws alongside and goes past,
mileage 18s in omers nders
Step inside and it is a master class of design and function. You get 4 individual seats, sumptuous trimming, mood lighting and the classic MINI dashboard with a massive central speedo and neat toggle switches. It looked fab when the MINI was first launched and it hasn’t dated one little bit. What’s it like to drive and live with? As with every MINI, it’s a hoot to drive. The
driving characteristic has quite rightly been referred to as skateboard-like. This is wonderful, grin-a-minute motoring. In this 1.6 diesel Cooper four wheel drive Paceman you get 0-60mph in a shade over 11 seconds; a top speed of 113mph and excellent fuel economy in the region of 57mpg. And of course with ALL 4 traction, you get terrific roadholding and the ability to be able to scramble across loose or rough terrain and, in this neck of the woods, keep moving on the snow and ice when other folk are stranded. As for goodies, the options list is endless, but in terms of standard kit you get a DAB radio, CD player, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, air con, electric windows, remote central locking etc. Not much else you need really. The MINI Paceman is one of the new breed of crossover cars. Part coupé, part off-roader, part sports, part SUV. All very desirable and all wrapped up in a superstylish package. It can’t fail to win friends.

ROAD TEST
WHEN ONE TURBO ISN’T ENOUGH
Bingo. You have a car that will deliver mind-blowing acceleration yet still return excellent fuel consumption while churning out low levels of emissions. It’s hard to think of a better win - win situation.
There are times when you simply cannot get enough turbochargers. Take Audi for example; they knew they could squeeze more power out of their V6 TDi engines so they decided to add a second turbo. Here’s the recipe. Take one 3.0 litre V6 engine; add a small turbo which takes care of the lower rev range, and then add a much larger turbo that bursts into life at higher revs and when the driver needs a punch in the back. Peak power is 309bhp.
With so much power on tap, quattro transmission is standard, as is an 8-speed tiptronic gearbox, hurling the A6 or A7 forward to reach 60mph in a shade over 5 seconds. 155mph top speed is easily reached. It would go faster but the limiter cuts in. There’s even an exhaustmounted sound actuator to make it sound really, really good.
Sportback and the Q5. It suits all of the cars perfectly, but it’s particularly at home with the A6 and A7. Away from the techy stuff, everything is pure Audi. Rock solid build; burst proof reliability. The goodies list is comprehensive including sat nav linked to a 6.5-inch colour monitor, leather upholstery, the Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system controlling throttle response, transmission shift points and steering feel, the Audi parking system, light and rain sensors, cruise control and keyless go pushbutton engine ignition.
Keep an eye on the fuel gauge. Resist the temptation to have fun and you’ll crack 44mpg. CO2 emissions are rated at 169, putting you in band H for road tax and company car tax liability of 28%. Granted, we’d all like those tax levels to be less but, hey, look at the sort of performance you’re getting. There are thousands of folk out there in a repmobile who’re paying very nearly as much.
Prices? The A6 biturbo models start at £44,670; the A7 biturbo is from £52,655.
The 3.0 biturbo is available in the Audi A6 Saloon, Avant and allroad; the A7
Form an orderly queue please.
The Audi biturbo engine is a stunning piece of engineering. It endows the already terrific and hugely successful A6 and A7 with the ideal blend of relaxed cruising, shattering performance and peerless handling, all wrapped up in a body honed from granite with faultless build quality and….the clincher…low running costs.

ROAD TEST
rush with hush
In the last edition of AutOh! magazine we previewed the arrival of the new, third generation Lexus IS. Up to that point, we’d driven pre-production models. Well, the ‘proper’ IS has arrived and we’ve been renewing a friendship. The IS brings together everything that’s good about Lexus. If you want a traditional, quality saloon, then you’ll love the IS 250 with a 2.5 litre petrol V6 engine, but the one we like and would highly recommend is the IS 300h which mates a 4-cylinder 2.5 litre engine to an electric motor. You end up with a sports saloon that is one of the most economical and ecofriendly cars around. It makes huge sense as a company car. It is the first saloon in its class to have carbon emissions of less than 100g/km.and that means you have a nice round figure when it comes to road tax. £0. Zilch.
ber ction es. .
With an official fuel return of just over 65mpg, Lexus reckons that, thanks to the car’s best-in-class tax rating starting from just 11%, the IS300h will save business users up to £3,000 over 3 years when compared to the competition. For a lot of business people, that figure alone will mean they really should be taking a very close look at this car. Here are two more sets of figures. 0-60mph takes just over 8 seconds. The top speed is 125mph. If you prefer the sound and additional grunt of a traditional V6, then the IS250 will be perfect for you.
while the IS300h comes in at £29,495. Everything else about the new IS is pure Lexus. It’s crafted from granite. The interior is beautifully constructed with high-end materials. Even the entry level models are comprehensively equipped with kit like climate control, DAB radio, cruise control, keyless smart entry, Bluetooth and some natty xenon headlights with really cool LED running lights. As with every Lexus, there is a brilliant list of standard safety equipment too. And, you get peerless reliability. The Lexus IS strikes me as being a car from the traditional category of GT. In other words, I don’t see it as an outright sports racer: I see it more as a Grand Tourer. Okay, you can hustle along in the IS but it really comes into its own when you want to cover some miles, cruise long distances in wonderful comfort and style. The IS has a presence about it. If a top quality, tax efficient, fuel efficient, comfortable and quiet saloon is what you fancy, this car should be No.1 on your list of test drives.
Prices? Well the IS250 starts at £26,495,

The Honda Civic has always been one of the best driver’s cars around, so I was a bit concerned when the media blurb came out from Honda HQ saying how efficient their latest Civic 1.6i-DTEC was going to be. Now, I’m a big fan of efficiency because that means economy and that in turn means a saving at both the fuel pump and at the desk of the tax inspector, but I still want to enjoy my car. continuing on to 129 mph. In other words, this is a car with real word savings that any average driver should achieve. Business users will be interested; this Civic sits in the 13 per cent company car tax band.
I needn’t have worried. After spending a week with a Honda Civic ES 1.6i-DTEC, I’m glad to report that all is well. This is a peach of a diesel engine which provides oodles of power while making the car ultra frugal. Emissions are 94g/ km which means you pay zero road tax. The fuel return is 78.5mpg yet the car is still capable of breaching the 60mph barrier in a shade over 10 seconds and
Throw in the fact that Hondas have bulletproof reliability and are as solid as any family hatchback available anywhere, and you start to see that this is adding up to a very decent proposition. Build quality is top notch, there’s loads of room for the family and the Civic is extremely comfy. Oh...and it’s built at Honda’s Swindon factory. £20,780 gets you into ES 1.6i-DTEC. As I mentioned at the start, Civics are driver’s cars, so there was no real point in Honda ruining everything purely to get good economy figures. The boys and girls at Swindon have done a sterling job. This Civic 1.6i DTEC feels really nimble. You get slick handling and a smooth ride. The
diesel engine has been nicely muffled so that you make relaxed progress either around town or along the motorway. It’s also good fun trying to be ũber economical There’s a stop / start system which cuts the engine at traffic lights for example. There’s a gear-change indicator on the dashboard and, when you are driving efficiently, there’s a green glow around the digital speedo. For your money you get air con, electric windows, cruise control, fully adjustable steering wheel, height adjustment to the driver’s seat, Bluetooth, an audio system with USB and MP3 capability all of which can be controlled from buttons on the steering wheel, alloy wheels and a whole host of safety aids. Who said you needed to be frugal to be frugal. The Honda Civic 1.6i DTEC lets you live a lot while spending a little.

ROAD TEST
MIRAGE NEW MIRAGE BREAKS COVER These are busy times for Mitsubishi. A steady stream of new models is appearing… and this Mirage is the latest one to arrive.
Mitsubishi was keen to produce a city car that was compact yet roomy; efficient yet lively enough to keep pace with motorway traffic; sensibly priced but not skimping on the equipment. And they’ve done it. The Mirage is the most slippery car in its class; in other words, it’s incredibly aerodynamic. That means the engine doesn’t have its work cut out pushing the car through the air. Do the sums and you’ll find that average fuel consumption works out at approaching 70mpg and, thanks to low emissions, the entire Mitsubishi Mirage range is free of road fund tax. It’s roomy too. So often you tend to find that city cars are fine for those folk in the front but are cramped in the rear. It’s often tricky getting into the back in the first place. No problems here because
the Mirage has 5-doors and there’s ample space in the back for a couple of 6 footers (that’s 1.8 metres in new money). Oh, and talking of money, the Mirage range currently benefits from a £1000 discount to celebrate the arrival of this new baby, making the entry level 1.0 litre version weigh-in at £7,999. What’s it like on the road? Well, as I mentioned earlier, it’s okay to have a city car that’s a home on the school run or dawdling to the shops, but there are times when you need to get a move on. The good news is that both the 1.0 litre and 1.2 litre Mirage models have a nippy turn of speed. If you do regular motorway trips, the 1.2 will probably be best suited to you, giving a 0-60 time of under 12 seconds and a top speed of 112mph. This mid-range model comes in at £9999, giving you a lot of car for not a lot of cash.
Included as standard you get air conditioning, 4 electric windows, electric mirrors, upgraded audio system with iPad and USB connectivity; central locking with keyless entry, daytime running lights, auto headlights and wipers; and rear privacy glass. Now, that’s a comprehensive list. Back in the city, something else you’ll find useful is that the Mirage has the smallest turning circle in its class. And how about this for confidence in the product; the Mitsubishi Mirage comes with a 5-year, 60,000 mile warranty and 3-years breakdown assistance and recovery. If you pay an extra £350, you’ll get 3-years servicing cover. Think that’s all too good to be true? Don’t worry….it’s a Mirage…from Mitsubishi.

Swedish Metal Detector There’s a revolution going on at Volvo. They’re not a shouty company that says ‘Look at us; aren’t we clever.” No, they just keep introducing the sort of technology that can be easily missed, which is often the best type of technology ‘cos; you don’t know it’s there until you need it. Probably when it’s prevented an accident or saved someone’s life…probably yours. Let’s not overlook the more visible revolution at Volvo. Their cars are becoming more striking with every new model. Take the latest V40 for example which ranges from the standard vehicle to the sporty R-Design and the rugged Cross Country. They’re terrific to drive and if you go for the 1.6 D2 models, you get stunning economy and low bills in the shape of zero road fund licence and, for business users, qualification for 13% tax liability thanks to low emissions.
Don’t assume this means performance has suffered. 0-60 is around 11 seconds and you can reach 118mph. Add in a stack of goodies, comfortable spacious interior and a starting price of £18,995, and you end up with a car that really is the business for both families and companies. What about the techy stuff? As well as front and side airbags, side impact protection and whiplash protection, all V40s are fitted with the world’s first pedestrian airbag (which deploys over the lower part of the windscreen and A-pillars and lifts the bonnet slightly to help absorb the impact) and a low-speed collision avoidance system called City Safety. You can specify Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection, Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake, Distance Alert Control, Lane Keeping Aid, Blind Spot Information System and Cross Traffic Alert. By 2020,
Volvo’s aim is that no-one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo. Wow. So, Volvos are safe. “What’s new?” I hear you say. Well, a lot of the above actually. Yes, Volvo has always had a reputation for building solid, reliable, safe cars, but now they’re safer than ever, whether you’re inside or outside the vehicle. And you can guarantee that these features will appear on more cars within the Volvo range….it’s just that you will probably won’t be aware of it until we tell you. So auto or manual; petrol or diesel; saloon, hatchback, sportwagon, estate or 4x4? All very different, all very 21st century. All very Volvo. And they’ve all got Swedish metal.

In other words, the EcoBoost Zetec gets a stack of equipment as standard. The mobile phone inspired dashboard looks cool.
The Ford Fiesta continues to be a massive success story. Deservedly so. It’s not by some sort of fluke that it is the UK’s top seller. The EcoBoost engine is a marvel. It is a 1.0 litre, turbocharged, 3-cylinder petrol unit that revs forever, sounds great, allows you to reach 60mph in around 11 seconds, takes you on to 112 mph yet still sips fuel at the rate of 65mpg. Emissions are so low that you avoid car road tax altogether. Stop-start technology comes as standard. Don’t confuse, this EcoBoost engine with the one to be found in the Fiesta ST. That ones is a hooligan of an engine with a 0-60 time of just over 6 seconds.

driver in the ST is having more fun. They aren’t. The 1.0 litre EcoBoost we’re trying here is a hoot.
But don’t for one minute assume that the
Out on the road, the 3-cylinder engine is a gem. It’s quiet and extremely smooth. It also has more than enough in-gear power to help you nip around town or dash along the motorway. It stays remarkably refined whether you’re dawdling along on the school run or eating up the miles on a long trip. Every Fiesta is roomy, comfortable and great to ride around in. Throw in the utterly brilliant EcoBoost engine and you can see why the Fiesta will continue to zoom from strength to strength. It’s brilliant.

AUTOH...OH MO
If you’re into motoring, why not get into Mo-toring to raise Mo-ney. Movember is looming.
We’re building up to that time of year when Mo Bros and, yes, Mo Sistas, can raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and testicular cancer. You also have the chance to have a really good laugh. Granted, there’s the serious risk of being laughed at, but, hey, you’re raising much needed cash. Put it this way, you will probably look a darn sight better than you do in your passport photograph. (Have you ever seen a good one?) The options are endless. You could go for something totally outlandish and end up looking like Salvador Dali, or you can keep things nice and simple and resemble that Newcastle Utd legend Micky Quinn. Beards or sideburns are not allowed, so if you were fancying looking like the front men out of ZZ Top, nope, sorry, that’s a no-no. Trim it, shape it or just let it take care itself, that’s totally up to you, although your friends and relatives might have a bit to say if things start to get a bit out of hand and something starts to live in it. Granted, the growing of a Mo is limited to the guys, (no jokes please), but Mo Sistas play a vital role in the success of Movember by supporting and encouraging the men in their life to get involved. Mo Sistas also participate in raising funds and awareness. Movember is all about bringing back the moustache, having fun and doing it for a serious cause. Mo Bros...there were over a million last year...commit to growing a moustache for the 30 days of Movember, and in doing so become walking and talking billboards for the cause. On November the 1st, you need to be clean shaven and then let your imagination take hold.
The moustache is the symbol by which Movember generates conversations, awareness and raises funds for men’s health. And the message is spreading. Since its humble beginnings, Movember has grown to become a truly global movement inspiring Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to participate across 21 countries worldwide. There are loads of ways in which you can get involved with Movember such as registering as a Mo Bro or Mo Sista and raising funds and awareness yourself or donating to someone you know who is participating. You can also attend various events such as Mo Parties, Mo Runs or host your own event in honour of Movember. Where does the cash go? The funds raised in the UK are directed to programmes run directly by Movember and their men’s health partners, Prostate Cancer UK and the Institute of Cancer Research. Loads of local companies in the North East are leading by example. Procter and Gamble. Sage, Reflections (part of UBISOFT), Benfield.(who raised £5000)... they all encouraged their staff to get involved. Importantly, they’re all doing their bit to raise funds. The size of the company is irrelevant; the size of the commitment is what counts. We’re doing our bit here at AutOh! to promote Movember. Now it’s your turn. For details of what you do and how you go about raising sponsorship or donating, go onto www.uk.movember.com

SURVEY
BANG THE GONG. IT’S AWARDS TIME.
It’s that time of year when it’s good to take stock of the cars that have been launched over the last 12 months. Are they better than their competitors? Are they better than the ones they replaced? Okay, not all of them are brand new from the ground up; many are given a facelift, new interior trim, different engines, an extra pair of doors etc. Nowadays, thanks to computers and hi-tech assembly lines, cars can be given a nip and tuck at the stroke of a pen... or perhaps that should be click of a mouse. Which leads us nicely onto the latest round of car awards. This time, they’re from Auto Express.
Here we go with the pick of the cars that collected gongs
for three successive years. It is really well priced, but that’s only part of the story. It’s roomy, well built, comfy and good to drive whether empty or loaded to the gunwales.
5. Best Small MPV
3. Best Family Car
This was one of two classes won by Mazda. The Mazda 6 is a cracking saloon car, loaded with goodies, very spacious and great to drive. It looks distinctive on the road. Lively, efficient engines merely complete the package.
This is for the vehicle that can carry 5 adults in comfort. Ford’s B-Max took the gong. The clincher is the clever doors and the way the interior works. It might be based on a supermini, but it’s got bags of room.
1. Car of the Year Winner... was the SEAT Leon. It also collected the award for number 2.
6. Best Hot Hatch
2. Best Compact Family Car...
It’s hardly surprising really because this is a car that has been born from the DNA of Audi and VW. It’s a roomy hatchback that’s good to drive with a hint of sportiness. Top notch build quality too.
was won by the outstanding Ford Fiesta ST which shames a lot of the bigger and much more expensive so-called hot hatches. .
4. Best Large MPV
It was a good night for SEAT because their Alhambra was named as best 7-seat MPV, an award it’s now claimed

7. Best Supermini
was the Fiesta, making it a really good night for the blue oval firm. Their fourth award of the evening was for the Transit Custom which was named

13. Best Convertible
Love or loathe it, the Volkswagen Beetle still turns heads, and the new Cabriolet version is unique. Nothing looks like it. Super stylish. As to what it’s drive like is irrelevant. You buy it to be seen in.
8. Best Van.
17. Safety Award
14. Best Coupé and 15. Best Roadster 9. Best Small and 10. Large Executives
This was a clean sweep for BMW with their 3 and 5 Series cars. Even though their styling is sometime criticised for being rather unimaginative, there’s no doubting that they’ve got it right when it comes to creating a desirable brand. They are the classic example of driving the badge.
No surprise that picking up this award was the latest Volvo V40. We road test the car earlier in AutOh! It really is stuffed with safety kit that you won’t appreciate until something happens. All cars should use the V40 as a template.
This was a double win for Porsche. We’ve lumped these two awards together because the Boxster and Cayman are essentially the same vehicle but, obviously, one has a tin roof, the other is a drop top. Both are brilliant drive. The Cayman struggles to shake off the ‘couldn’t afford a 911’ tag though.
18. Driver Power Award
16. Best Crossover
11. Best Luxury Car
went to the ginormous Range Rover. It really is huge, and it crushes any socalled competition. Total opulence and it’ll cross a desert or mountain range without flinching.
Mazda’s second win of the evening with their CX-5. Interior packaging is the key to winning this class and, in that respect the CX-5 is utterly brilliant. Well priced too.
is actually for the company nominated as having the best customer service. Again, no surprises here. Have you ever been into a Lexus showroom? Refined, knowledgeable, helpful staff who always seem to get it spot on.
19. Best Performance Car
We’ve left this until last because it’s our favourite group....and the winner is the totally, absolutely splendiferous Toyota GT86. Sounds great and goes like a scalded cat, but a doddle to drive and lovely to sit in.
12. Best Compact SUV
Land Rover also had a successful evening because their Evoque took this category. All you need to know is that the Halewood factory is working flat out and there’s a waiting list for the vehicle. Nuff said.
