Experience Durham

Welcome from Experience Durham Durham University has a strong tradition of student involvement in an impressive range of activities beyond studying at the University. Experience Durham facilitates and supports this rich and diverse activity to ensure that students have access to the best possible networks to advance and develop their skills in sport, outreach and volunteering and, in partnership with Durham Student Union, in music and theatre. Team Durham is the home of student sport at Durham University. In 2012/13 we finished second in the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) points table, highlighting our excellence in performance level sport. Participation in sport at Durham University is amongst the highest in the UK. Thousands of students play in College teams across 17 different sports. Our community engagement teams offer activities to young people and disadvantaged adults. All facilities are open to members of the public. Our body of 15,000 students helps bring Durham and the surrounding area to life with a wide range of vibrant theatre and music events that are open to everyone every week of term. Students produce, manage, direct and perform a wide variety of theatrical genres from musicals to comedies, tragedies to pantomimes. The home of Durham Student Theatre is the Assembly Rooms Theatre on the Bailey in Durham. Performances also take place in our World Heritage Site locations. Durham student musicians regularly perform all types of music, from Chamber Choirs to string orchestras, Big Bands and folk music, in venues across the city including Durham Cathedral.

Students and staff are committed to improving and engaging with local communities through our two volunteering schemes, freely giving hundreds of hours to support those communities through tutoring and befriending projects, conservation work etc. Durham University is a welcoming community and Experience Durham invites staff, students and the wider community to come together to enjoy the musical and theatrical performances that our students put on; to come and cheer our high-performing sports teams; to use our fitness suites and participate in activity classes, or to engage with our staff in their community outreach work. The following articles highlight a few of the range of activities within Experience Durham. The magazine introduces some of our student sabbatical officers who co-ordinate, facilitate and promote the diverse programme. We have also written a few reports from activities over the summer. Our next issue due at the start of next term will focus on the Michaelmas term’s highlights.

A team Will Carling, Nasser Hussain, Phil de Glanville, Jonathan Edwards, Andrew Strauss, Sophie Hoskings, Lily van den Broeke....all former students of Durham University who’ve gone on to reach the sporting heights. It is the aim of Team Durham to encourage more of you to get involved in sport, have some fun and maintain Durham University’s standing as the top sporting university in the North of England and ranked as No.2 in Britain. The two people whose job it is to steer Team Durham are Hannah Lowther, the new Team Durham President, and Tom Newman, the College Sport Manager. They’re both based at the DSU so drop in and have a chat with them if you have any questions at all regarding College or University sport.

We’ve been talking to them.

outside. To enable the students to have a stronger voice, I am establishing a Vice President Panel to assist in decision making, event organising and feedback methods. It is Team Durham’s aim to hold our 2nd position in BUCS behind rivals Loughborough, with the view to become the leading university for team sport through winning the highest number of Wednesday afternoon fixtures.

HANNAH LOWTHER TEAM DURHAM PRESIDENT It is an honour to have been elected into the sabbatical role of Team Durham President in order to manage the Durham University Athletic Union this year. Graduating in June with a Sport Science degree and having been involved with Team Durham at a participation level as a lacrosse player, through administration as Women’s Lacrosse Club President and also involvement with community volunteering programmes, it felt a natural progression to apply for the sabbatical role. A new position of College Sport Coordinator has been introduced this year in order to formally manage our vast college programme which enables over 90% of students to participate in sport annually, the highest rate in Britain. Tom Newman, featured opposite, occupies that position.

We hope you can join us for some of our exciting university fixtures!

I believe it is vital that we develop our social media and website use to communicate both within the university and outside

The creation of this role will enable me to be more of a public figure within the university, acting as the student representative. My role includes the administration of university sport, arranging team fixtures, club finances, organising events and Team Durham publicity. This year I aim to increase the visibility of the position. I was active during Induction Week attending college events to introduce myself to new students and hosted a welcome event for sport leaders and university staff who will be working together during the year so as to enhance communication channels. To further communication and publicity I believe it is vital that we develop our social media and website use to communicate both within the university and

the year. Sports, including rowing will contribute to the final points total for the first time, and new sports such as mini tennis and futsal will be added to the programme. I also hope to run one-off events in golf, athletics, swimming and volleyball. The college festival of sport (which will take place in the summer term – post exams) will be the pinnacle of the year with the majority of college sports participating in one massive event which will undoubtedly shake up the final college league standings. I aim to actively encourage the University coaches to get involved in college sport, either by offering coaching to college teams, umpire and referee training and talent spotting at fixtures which will also help to develop university athletes and grow our performance programme.

TOM NEWMAN TEAM DURHAM’S COLLEGE SPORT MANAGER College sport is Team Durham’s flagship programme. There are no other academic institutions in the country which even come close to rivalling the levels of participation we see in Durham on a weekly basis. This year alone, over 6000 students will take part in college sport – close to 90% of the undergraduate population will participate in sport during their time at Durham. There will be 5700 fixtures played by over 300 teams lead by student captains and executive committees across 16 centrally managed sports. There is nothing like the feeling of bringing home a win for your college team. Sport

My role is new this year with the view to really focussing on ensuring that the college sport programme is the best that it has ever been. I am solely responsible for the management of college sport with a view to ensuring that those who participate in college sport are represented within Team Durham.

Durham’s three main areas of focus are performance, participation and community outreach – we do fantastically well in performance nd we keep getting better, and community outreach programme has grown exponentially over the past few years and has a brilliant support team. We may be number 2 in the country as a performance institution, but I am proud to say that we are the leading university in terms of intramural competition and I am determined to ensure that we live up to our reputation. We cater for all levels of sport at Durham. I urge you to participate in college sport. Being part of a college team gives you so many opportunities not just to play, but to socialise, become part of the team exec and gain truly valuable life experiences. I will do everything I can to ensure your college sport experience is second to none. Get involved.

My role is new this year with the view to really focussing on ensuring that the college sport programme is the best that it has ever been

As well as improving the general day to day management of college sport I aim to improve the communication between Team Durham staff and students and increase the profile of Durham College Sport by linking to The Palatinate newspaper and utilising Team Durham social media. The college points table will, for the first time since it was created, be regularly updated throughout

COACH LEE DAVIE GIVES A TEAM TALK

Durham University Basketball goes wild Written by Richard Warburton. The Durham Wildcats Basketball team is a joint venture between Durham University and Durham County Council, supported with the ambition of developing the strongest basketball programme in Britain. Going into their third season, the club is looking to build upon the eleventh place finish in year 1 and the ninth place finish in year 2. The British Basketball League (BBL) has been in existence since 1987, and represents the highest level of the professional game in the UK. In 2013 / 14 season twelve franchises in major towns and cities will take part in the league, spanning from Plymouth in the south-west all the way up to Glasgow. Televised games are covered by Eurosport on a weekly basis throughout the season. Development is at the heart of the Wildcats programme. The men’s and women’s senior playing squad are recruited to Durham University to combine Higher Education study with elite basketball. The objective is simple – to ensure that the players grow as athletes and as people during their time in

the programme. If they do this, the club will win both on and off the court. Lee Davie is head coach. He oversees the day to day management of both the male and female basketball programmes at the club. In addition to his work with the Durham Wildcats Lee is also a GBR Under 20s Assistant Coach and already has a British University Championship to his name, leading the Durham University squad to victory in 2011 / 12. On the court, the Wildcats captain is New Yorker, Ralph Bucci who’s become a North East favourite arriving in Durham via the rather contrasting areas of Teesside and Greece. As well as leading by example as skipper going into his third season with the club, he’s also assistant coach at the Wildcats.

coaching and worked with over 7,000 young people, many of whom were new to the sport. Home BBL games are played at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre where fans can expect a warm welcome and a highly entertaining game of basketball. At the time of going to press, the Wildcats are going along nicely. They’re through to the next round of the BBL Cup after beating Cheshire Phoenix 78-75, while in the BBL Championship they’ve played three and won two. They lost their opening game of the season away to the reigning champions, the Newcastle Eagles.

Durham Wildcats work closely with Durham County Council and England Basketball to deliver a far reaching programme that engages young people aged between 10 and 22. Over the last two years they have delivered over 1,000 hours of basketball

Summer camp

success Written by Emma Hall-Craggs.

It’s the end of another rapturous week; thank you to the parents and children who came down to Summer Camp, as well as Ben G and Luke for being fabulous coaches!!

If you ever venture to the university sports centre at Maiden Castle during the months of July and August it is normally at its quietest with all of the college and university athletes taking a well-deserved break from studying and playing sport during the summer holidays. This summer however, was a little bit different as the Team Durham Community Department was running a six week programme of summer camps for local school children aged four to 16. A team of eleven university students worked throughout the summer, with the help of a team of volunteers including four university students and seventeen young people from the local area. These young volunteers are prospective Durham students all of whom have a keen interest in coaching and playing sport.

The enthusiasm of all of the staff and helpers was fantastic and made both of our kids feel comfortable, even our rather sensitive and cautious 7 year old who normally would be very nervous at a camp where she knew no-one Here’s a typical reaction from one of the rather exhausted volunteer “It’s the end of another rapturous week; thank you to the parents and children who came down to Summer Camp, as well as Ben G and Luke for being fabulous coaches!! It was a pleasure to meet and play sports with you all. During the past two weeks I was able to ‘re-live’ my childhood, and I can say that this has been the highlight of my summer! Last but not least, thank you Harriet, Katie,

Emma, Lynn and the other Team Durham staff and volunteers for organizing and running a successful camp”. The camps attracted a vast array of interest from the local parents and by week two the camps had over one hundred children each day attending. The camps gave both the students and volunteers an invaluable opportunity to develop both their coaching and leadership skills, supported by the Team Durham Community Outreach team. Two camps were tailored for children of primary and secondary ages. The primary children were offered Bounce and SHOUT!: trampolining, cheerleeding and dance, football, lacrosse, dodgeball and circus skills. Secondary age children were busy experiencing rowing, basketball, football, orienteering and trampolining. After 6 weeks it was safe to say that the staff, volunteers and all of the four hundred and thirty different children involved, went home suitably worn out but wanting to come back again.

If you’re interested in finding out more information about volunteering, or perhaps you know someone who would like to send their children along to future summer camps, then contact Team Durham by using this email address… teamdurham.holidaycamps@dur.ac.uk

“The sports camp really was fantastic, our kids absolutely loved it,” said one of the parents. “The enthusiasm of all of the staff and helpers was fantastic and made both of our kids feel comfortable, even our rather sensitive and cautious 7 year old who normally would be very nervous at a camp where she knew no-one”.

All in all, we can each say with complete honesty that the trip provided us with a host of experiences and memories to last a lifetime

Written by Simon Gauge. This summer, six of my fellow students and I embarked on a seven week trip to the southern African nation of Zambia to conduct drama workshops and performances with local children. An incredibly valuable experience, we all gained a huge amount from the project as both individuals and as a group, and we departed the country with new friends, new skills and a love for a newly discovered culture. The first week of the trip was spent in the city of Livingstone, home to the breathtaking Victoria Falls. Whilst there, we worked closely with Sun International, an African hotel chain which supports local communities and schools. The days were spent running a series of drama workshops in a local school, which culminated in a performance the school deserved to be very proud of; other projects we visited included an elderly persons’ home and orphanage.

Each evening, we performed a series of musical theatre standards in one of Sun International’s Zambian hotels, the Zambezi Sun, which was also our accommodation for the week. It was a phenomenal beginning to our time in Zambia; from bungee jumps and elephants to smiling children and proud teachers, the memories and experiences taken from Livingstone are simply unforgettable. Following our week in Livingstone, we took the long bus trip north to Lusaka, Zambia’s capital city and where we would spend the rest of our trip. Although our time was initially spent in meetings organising future placements, we quickly got into the swing of things, and found ourselves on the doorstep of Barefeet Theatre, who coincidentally were hosting their annual festival whilst we were there. The seven of us slotted into various roles within the festival, with most of our time spent with the Art Facilitators, helping

them to conduct workshops. With Barefeet, I worked with three different children’s centres across the city – each centre was tasked with creating an original piece of drama outlining the problems in their community. The three centres I worked with did an exceptional job, and I felt incredibly proud watching them perform their final pieces. Three afternoons a week were spent at Fountain of Hope, an orphanage based in Lusaka. Sitting in on drama workshops, mentoring sessions and the occasional baby clinic, we offered our help wherever and whenever it was needed. Getting to know the children at Fountain was one of the undisputed highlights of the trip. Their effervescence, vitality and sense of humour kept me smiling through each visit, and even as I type this I am sat chuckling to myself just thinking about them. All in all, we can each say with complete honesty that the trip provided us with a host of experiences and memories to last a lifetime. Culturally, we threw ourselves into Zambian life, trying (mostly unsuccessfully) our hand at traditional African dancing as well as negotiating the bustling and perplexing world of Lusaka public transport. We may not have been building schools or saving lives, but I do believe we made an overwhelmingly positive contribution whilst out there – we are taking the project in the right direction, and have begun to formulate a blueprint for the trip’s future successes. The project has huge potential, and with 2013 only the second year since its inception, the future of the Durham Student Theatre Zambia Project is looking very rosy indeed.

If you fancy volunteering for future trips to Zambia, get in touch with Team Durham and they’ll let you know what’s required.

NOVEMBER Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest Presented by Ooook! Productions 7th to 9th at 7:0Opm (and 2:30pm on the 9th) in The Assembly Rooms

It’s one thing to finance a show going to Edinburgh, but to take a show that I’ve written, is entirely different. It’s my baby. Add onto that the fact that it’s the first thing I’ve ever written, and I had also never been to the Fringe before, and I’m sure you can imagine how anxious I was! To see people actually having emotional reactions to something I created, leaving the theatre in tears - both happy and sad - was just astonishing. I’m always jotting down little ideas, no matter how ridiculous they are, but I doubt I’ll have the time to write another whole play.” Do you fancy taking a leaf out of Idgie’s book? Every year Durham Student Theatre invites that year’s undergraduate intake to produce, direct, crew and perform in an as yet unknown show. Previously we have seen shows such as Oh! What A Lovely War, The Government Inspector and We All Fall Down, so keep your calendar free in week seven to see a showcase of Durham’s newest talent. In the meantime, check out what’s going on on the right.

Using a pseudonym to have some fun in London is all well and good, until your girlfriend’s cousin does the same and ensnares your ward! Ooook! presents Wilde’s classic comedy of mistaken identity and a witty satire of manners. Supporting Banzzardo’s childrens charity.

Tempahin

One of the UK’s most innovative and credible artists, Tinie Tempah returns to the northeast on December 11th when he performs live at Newcastle’s Metro Radio arena. Before that however, we got to hear from the “Frisky” rapper about his brand new album, Demonstration.

Toon

Released on November 4th, Demonstration is a pioneering piece of work that’s with a sense of musical adventure and an eclectic array of collaborators including Diplo, Pharrell, Zane Lowe, Paloma Faith, Labrinth, Naughty Boy, Dizzee Rascal, 2 Chainz, Emeli Sandé, Ellie Goulding and the Chemical Brother’s Tom Rowlands. If Disc-Overy was the South Londoner feeling his way and finding his feet, then Demonstration is the ultimate instruction manual in making a British album with an international focus.

“Demonstration is my manual of how to do it, how to be successful, how to make an album that can be commercially appreciated without being contrived” Tinie told us. “Disc-Overy proved to me that going with your gut and daring to be different from what everyone else was doing can work. The first album did amazingly well and I just hope the second album exceeds it. The songs I’ve made are ones that I felt needed to take things to the next level.” On the eve of releasing Pass Out in 2010, no one could have predicted just how huge a star the then 21 year-old Patrick Okogwu would become. “It wasn’t easy at first,” Tinie remembers. “People would be like ‘Why are your jeans so skinny; are you wearing Ray-Ban’s? Urgh’. But I had to hold onto my sense of self because that was what got me through the

years of pirate radio and as an MC in the

As soon as he played it I was like ‘Oh f$&%! Yeah, I’m very up for this.’

Other highlights on Demonstration include Moshpit, Tinie’s long-awaited collaboration with Dizzee Rascal… “This is the song I would have wanted to have with Dizzee when I was a 12 year-old kid,” says Tinie. … and 5 Minutes, produced by Zane Lowe and engineered by Rob Swire from Pendulum. A truly inspiring and unexpected collaboration, Zane approached Tinie with a beat while they were both in Australia on tour. “I’d been playing him some of the album and he goes ‘Hey, I know this is going to sound weird, but I actually have something for you.

As soon as he played it I was like ‘Oh f$&%! Yeah, I’m very up for this.’” It’s been three years since Tinie released Disc-Overy and much has changed in the Plumstead raised rapper’s life. For the last year, Tinie’s focus has been on creating an album that’s not only as good as his debut, but better. Demonstration is an album that underscores why he became such a star in the first place and reveals just how much bigger he’s about to be; both in the UK and around the world.

Tinie Tempah, with special guest Big Sean, is at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle on December 11th. 21

IT’S MO TIME Want to raise some Mo-ney for charity? Want to be a Mo Bro or Mo Sista? Well here’s your chance ‘cos it’s Movember.

Mo Bros’ and, yes, Mo Sistas, can raise vital funds and promote awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Granted, you risk

being laughed at, but, hey, you’re raising much needed cash. Put it this way, you’ll probably look a darn sight better than you do in your passport photograph. (Have

you ever seen a good one?) The options are endless. Go for something totally outlandish and end up looking like Salvador Dali, or keep things nice and simple and resemble that Newcastle Utd legend Micky Quinn. Beards or sideburns are not allowed, so if you fancy looking like the front men out of ZZ Top, nope, sorry, that’s a no-no. Trim it, shape it or just let it take care itself, that’s totally up to you, although your friends might complain if your Mo gets out of control and something starts to live in it.

Movember is all about bringing back the moustache, having fun and doing it for a serious cause. Mo Bros...there were over a million in the UK last year...commit to growing a moustache for the 30 days of Movember, and in doing so become walking talking billboards for the cause. Let your imagination take hold. There are loads of ways in which you can get involved with Movember such as registering as a Mo Bro or Mo Sista and raising funds and awareness yourself or donating to someone you know who is participating or hosting your own event in honour of Movember. Where does the cash go? The funds raised in the UK are directed to programmes run directly by Movember and their men’s health partners, Prostate Cancer UK and the Institute of Cancer Research.

Now it’s your turn. For details of what you do and how you go about raising sponsorship or donating, go onto www.uk.movember.com Ditch that razor; grow a Mo and raise some dosh.

GEORDIE STORE!!!

It’s always the same. The end of term comes around and you’re told to shift everything out of your room. This can result in one of several scenarios. Hire a vehicle to take everything home. Find a mate who’s got a rented house where you can dump everything Persuade a relative to come and collect your stuff. Or….the easy solution…..get in touch with Durham Self Store.

From as little as only £10 per week (plus VAT), Durham Self Store will look after all of your goods AND they’ll come to your Durham University college to collect it. Give them a call with plenty of notice, book in a time when you’ll be there to meet the collection team and, bingo, you’ll be on your way in no time at all. The Durham Self Store team will then take all of your gear back to the warehouse and ensure that everything is stored safely, securely and in dry conditions. There’s no hassle. You won’t need to struggle onto a train or bus with loads of cases or rucksacks. It’ll be cheaper than the tank of fuel you (or a relative) will need to spend to take everything home and bring back. It’ll certainly be cheaper than hiring a vehicle. And, even though your mate’s rented house might be a handy place to leave everything, is it safe and secure when they go home? Oh, and you’ve got to get it there too. The easiest and most cost-effective way to take care of all your stuff is to contact Durham Self Store. They’ll organise everything. All they need is a week’s notice to inform them of a collection or delivery date and time. If it’s easier and more convenient for you, you can simply drop off everything at their premises at Langley Moor on the outskirts of Durham. So, there you go. No more worries about what happens at the end of term. Go onto www.durhamselfstore.com or call them on 0191 3783511 and they’ll tell you what you need to do. You can even buy some new packing boxes if you need them. They’re open Mon to Fri 09.00 - 18.00 and weekends 10.00 -16.00

Bid

buzz Well no sooner had the Freshers arrived than Durham sashayed into Fashion Week. From October 15- 20, Fashion In Durham featured catwalk events, late night shopping and a grand finale in Durham Castle. The whole six days were hosted by Durham Business Improvement District, (The BID), and the big event in the Castle saw Durham University Charity Fashion Show organisers get involved. There was a Mad Hatter themed night in the Town Hall featuring autumn and winter collections from most of the High Street stores and boutiques in Durham City. A gentleman’s evening was staged at Oldfield’s restaurant; there was late night shopping featuring live mannequins and, on the Saturday night, a huge fashion show took place in the unlikely but very successful surroundings of the Prince Bishops car park. To wrap-up the week, Durham University students got involved with a special event at the Castle.

“This was the city’s first major fashion event, showcasing up-and-coming designers alongside High Street and independent retailers”, said BID manager, Sonali Craddock. “The week had something for every fashion taste. It typified exactly what The BID is all about. We want to promote Durham City retailers and make potential customers fully aware of what is available.” Well, was it a success for the businesses involved? Here’s what Chris Hayes from Woven had to say… “The Gentlemen's evening we hosted was very successful with 100 people attending. We were amazed at the end of the night to find the customers had spent £3500”. So there you go. Keep an eye on The BID website (www.durhambid.co.uk) to keep up to date with everything that’s going on.

Leonard’s coffee house heaven

There are times when you really do need to escape. Well, thankfully, Durham City has its own perfect desert island on which you can go to relax, to chill and to enjoy a light bite and a drink.

“Good, home prepared food and cakes and

Leonard’s Coffee House is situated on Back Silver Street in a place called Fowler’s Yard. Okay, you probably have no idea where that is so I guess it’s time to explore. Once you’ve found Leonard’s, you’ll appreciate why it has become the place in Durham to head for when you either want to sit quietly with some cool tunes in the background or just meet up with friends.

Don’t believe us? Go onto Trip Advisor and wade through the 5 Star recommendations. Here are some of the latest comments taken from the most recent 10 reviews. “Coffee and hot chocolate enjoyed by all. We also enjoyed fantastic scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, bacon sandwiches and toasted tea cakes. All for really good value for money”. “Great coffee and food, served with a smiling, friendly greeting. Today I had a bacon, Brie and cranberry ciabatta, which was delicious, followed by an elderflower slice.”

So, there you go. No need to take our word for it; previous customers have done it for us. If you enjoy scrummy cakes, hot breakfasts and lunches, savoury snacks, a huge range of tea and coffee, then Leonard’s is the place to go to. There’s a smart, up-market feel to the place. It’s new. And what a view

From the Market Place, head down Silver Street, across Framwellgate Bridge and the first building you’ll see on your left is The Bishop Langley. Those of you who’ve been at Durham University for a while will remember a dive called the Coach and Eight. Blimey….you want to see the place now. New owners, new décor, new chef, new range of drinks. Erm...well...it’s new.

Outside though, leading directly off the bridge, there’s a cracking roof terrace with one of the best views of Durham, looking straight up to the Castle and Cathedral. Brilliant on a warm day; no problem on a chilly day ‘cos they’ve got heaters. And make sure you’ve got your Student Discount card with you because you’ll get 10 per cent lopped off your bill.

The Bishop Langley is a city centre pub with a difference. Go down the steps and you’ll find a vintage style bar with a contemporary twist. 32 Oh!Student issue1 - GR Updated.indd 32

Their blurb says, “Enjoy contemporary pub dining, The Bishop Langley way.” They’ve got a point; lots of traditional favourites done differently. Their sandwiches are certainly worth taking a lunch break for and if you’re feeling a tad indulgent, grab one of the fresh desserts. However if you’re looking for something smaller The Bishop Langley also has an ever-changing Tapas menu. All dishes are cooked to order, served simply and are as locally sourced as they can be.

It might be outdoors, but it’s open all year round, Complete with state of the art infrared heaters and surrounded by luscious greenery The Bishop Langley terrace is great for a bit of for al fresco drinking and contemporary pub dining. It’s the ideal place if you want to get a large group of fellow students together and, for those of you living in Crossgate and the Viaduct areas, it saves you having to trail into Durham. It certainly rates as one of the biggest outdoor pub / eating areas in the whole of the city.

And let’s face it, who doesn’t enjoy a game of table tennis? You can’t beat it when something totally different arrives in your city. And this latest venture to roll into Durham has got a whiff of success about it. Wiff Waff can be found where the old Market Vaults used to be. Trust us, it couldn’t be more different. There are two floors. On the ground floor you’ll immediately spot what Wiff Waff is all about. This is a ping pong social club. Yep, you can have a bite to eat, grab a drink and have a game of table tennis.

Keep an eye on their website ‘cos you can guarantee there’ll be loads of special deals and special events, particularly as we build-up to the end of term and some early Christmas revelry. For example, from Monday - Friday, 5-8pm, there are two for one pizzas and cocktails.

There is nothing like this in the North East. The lower floor is where you’ll find the DJ, two ping pong tables and a bar. There’s a serious club feel to this part of the building. Upstairs, it’s a bit more laid back. It’s slick, colourful; cool yet funky…oh and yes there’s a bar and a ping pong table. To be honest, if you’re thinking of hiring somewhere for a private party that’s different, well, Wiff Waff strikes us as being a cracking place to start looking. It’s a brilliant concept that needs to be seen to be believed. The place is cleverly designed so that you don’t have a ping pong ball plopping into your beer glass or landing on your pizza. And let’s face it, who doesn’t enjoy a game of table tennis? There are even specialist coaches on hand to give you a few tips on whether you should Wiff or Waff. There’ll be special events for those folk who take table tennis seriously but the vast majority of time will see the tables being used for a bit of good old fun. Being serious for a moment, aside from the fact that you can play table tennis here, this is an upmarket restaurant and bar. It fits in somewhere between a champagne bar and a smart bistro / pub. You could easily start a night here or finish it here. It’s that sort of place. If you fancy a bite to eat, Wiff Waff offers a buffet / sharer menu centred around salads, pizzas and sharer boards. They even do dessert pizzas. There’s an extensive drinks menu including draught and bottled beer, lager and cider. There’s a good selection of sensibly priced wines and a lengthy list of cocktails, including tea pot sharers.

Saturday Sessions see Wiff Waff open until 2.30am. Food is available all night and there’s 2 for 1 cocktails until 10pm. Thursday nights are tournament nights. Play gets underway at 8pm. A £100 CASH PRIZE IS ON OFFER EVERY WEEK. Where is Wiff Waff? It’s on Back Silver Street, behind the Indoor Market. Either go down the little alley next to SuperDry and bear right, or head through the Market Place and, before you go over the bridge that leads up Claypath, bear left, go for 100 yards and bear left again. You’ll see Wiff Waff on the left.

Fabio’s Fab

It’s easy to see why Fabio’s and La Spaghettata are two of THE places in Durham for students.

Situated on Saddler Street, La Spaghettata Italian restaurant has always been a hugely popular haunt. In recent years though, the owner Fabio Ciampolillo has gone up in the world; to the next floor, to be exact. Fabio’s Bar opened in 2005 and instantly became the sort of place to be seen in, but 2011 saw a big change with the construction of a stage above the bar area; the bar size was increased and a mezzanine level installed opposite the stage. The private function room and cosy lounge areas were retained, but the whole emphasis was now more upbeat rather than being a place to solely enjoy pre or after dinner drinks, although that of course is still a big part of

36 Oh!Student issue1 - GR Updated.indd 36

04/11/2013 12:13

2011 saw a big change with the construction of a stage above the bar area; the bar size was increased and a mezzanine level installed opposite the stage the night for many people dining downstairs in La Spaghettata. Fabio’s is worth keeping in touch with because new talent is always on show. Most weekends will see a band on stage providing a mixture of Dance, Rap, R & B, Soul etc. Various music nights are scattered throughout the week. Oh yes, and you can even have food sent up from the restaurant downstairs. There’s been another development too. Fabio is now using the top floor room as a meeting facility during the day or early evening. Several ‘milk round’ events have already taken place with some top companies inviting students or prospective employees to come along for a chat. In the main bar area, around 150 people can be easily accommodated. If you want to hire rooms for a meeting or party, the best idea is to call into La Spaghettata early in the evening and catch up with Fabio. He’ll give you a guided tour through what’s on offer.

Fabio’s Bar is open 7 nights a week from 6pm to 2am. La Spaghettata is open each night from 17.00 to 23.00 as well as opening for lunch, 11.30am 2.00 pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Festive Fashion Gone are the days spent dreading the reappearance of the dull Wellington boot; winter now seems to be the most stylish time of the year. Dubbed 'party season' it is the perfect time to re-haul your look whilst keeping warm! From over-sized outerwear to plaid inspired punk, the diverse range of trends on the High Street means anything goes when it comes to this winter's fashion. With many trends coming together in one garment, you can now update your wardrobe for half the price.

The High Street is the best place to go if you are hunting for the best on trend pieces. Inspired by the catwalks, you are guaranteed to see nearly exact replicas, meaning you can bag a bargain. Recurring season after season, the punk trend is a guaranteed wardrobe staple. The mix and match vibe allows clothing combinations to be endless. While the trademark PVC, plaids and prints still maintain a strong presence, this time round the punk comeback will adopt a more glamorous look, making it the perfect trend for daytime as well as for more formal occasions. The key to perfecting this trend is D.I.Y. customisation allowing you to have a completely unique look. The monochrome trend has been given a fresh look that will leave you looking anything but mundane.

Monochrome is a British fashion staple and is never really out of fashion. Simply mix and match to create new looks without having to completely renew your wardrobe. This season sees the style with less focus on heavy colour blocking and more emphasis on embellishment, textures and contrasting patterns. Monochrome is also a distinct focus in the animal print, punk and camouflage trends.

Animal print has continued from the summer season, but the trend has now been revamped to have a bright look with clashing prints and textures. The colourful designs are perfect for making you stand out, and are ideal for layering up over a shirt and under a coat. Double denim used to be the biggest fashion faux pas around, but this season we just can't get enough! From dungarees to dresses, the look cannot be completed without a vintage denim jacket. Start raiding your parent's wardrobe. Their 80's style is not as unfashionable as you might think! Of course the winter season would not be complete without one essential item; the Christmas jumper! With a history of bringing you ridicule in the family photo album, this garment is now the star of the show. Stocked in most High Street retailers, this nostalgic symbol of winter now only has one issue; how long you can wear it for before it becomes unacceptable. Wear your jumper with pride, in fact buy two, it is winter after all. The best season of the year has arrived! Celebrate by donning knitwear, layering up some of this season's coolest trends and enjoy keeping warm in style. Written by Emma Turnbull

Alternatively, they’ll be able to tell you exactly how much it will cost for his services.

Durham City Smiles are experts in the fitting and production of mouth guards. They produce triple laminate, vacuum formed mouth guards at their practice which is situated at the top of Crossgate, 10 minutes walk from Durham’s Market Place or the Science Site.

The ultra modern, relaxed and beautifully appointed Durham City Smiles dental practice is perfectly situated for all Durham University students. Go onto their website and you’ll find a map. You will also find a full list of their charges.

Of course, it’s also very easy to forget the routine things that tend to go with home life. Most of you should have been nagged into visiting a dentist for a regular 6 monthly check-up. You will also have had a dental practice that can deal with an emergency or non-routine appointment. What happens though if you’ve forgotten about your check-up or you have a dental problem? This can be a major problem if you are an international student

“We are the most modern dental practice in Durham”, said Graeme. “The practice has recently undergone a full refurbishment which has allowed us to ensure that everything is of the highest possible standard. We are also fortunate in having Opus Dental Laboratory on the same site which enables us to provide the ultimate in dental service.”

Fear not; help is at hand. The boss, Graeme Dentith, knows exactly how you feel. Graeme and his colleagues, Stuart Cox and Grenville Moore, all taught at Newcastle University Dental School and they’ve got a background steeped in dealing with sports related dental problems. Graeme is a former rugby player; his son is captain of Teesside Uni rugby team and his daughter played county hockey. He also sponsored Durham City rugby and hockey teams, and Graeme’s a member of the SCR at Collingwood College. In other words, if you’ve been involved in a sporting injury which has resulted in you having a dental problem, the guys at Durham City Smiles know precisely what to do. They’re used to dealing with students. They even have a hazy recollection of being one….. once.

Durham City Smiles can take care of your regular appointments and also look after any dental eventuality. They even do teeth whitening using methods fully approved by the General Dental Council. They also have a team of hygienists, Melanie Dixon and Natalie Johnson. Remember, you no longer need to see a dentist before you see a hygienist. They can help you with the most important job of looking after your oral health, and teaching you how to maintain your mouth in tip top condition, which can have proven benefits to your overall health If you are a member of a private healthcare scheme or something like Denplan, Graeme and his team can take care of everything.

To make an appointment or to find out more about the range of cosmetic and general dental service on offer, please call 0191 384 4447 or email info@durhamcitysmiles.co.uk The Durham City Smiles practice is open from 09:00 - 18:00 daily except Wednesday when they remain open until 19:00 and Friday when they close at 13:00. Y’know, here’s the best idea. Go and see them at the practice in the Crossgate Centre, have a chat and get sorted. www.durhamcitysmiles.co.uk

WELCOME (BACK) TO DURHAM Durham is a very safe place to live, and Durham University has just been placed 2nd in a league table of the safest universities in the country as compiled by The Complete University Guide. However, just like any other city we do have criminals who come here to look for an easy target. They know that Durham has a large student population and they know the valuable equipment you own. They also often know your routine / timetable, so will know when you are out for meals, lectures, sports etc. It is therefore vital that you secure your rooms and property. Most crimes are committed by opportunists. This means they are looking to take advantage of open windows or doors, a laptop left unattended in a library or lecture room, or a bike left unlocked in a poorly lit area. Crime Prevention relies on you using your common sense. There is no point having a reinforced door if you are not going to lock it, just as it is a waste of time having a window with toughened glass if you are going to leave it open when you leave the room.

Please be considerate to other residents as you travel to / from college. Many have to get up earlier than you do. Try to walk with friends, especially at night, avoiding poorly lit areas.
