Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Oh! Magazine. So, winter’s nearly over, Christmas and New Year are a distant memory and many of you will have already failed miserably in your New Year’s Resolutions. The weather is naff and you’re almost at that time when exams are looming and everything is looking a bit gloomy… well… we’re here to help! In this edition we have some fantastic bits and pieces to distract you from all the negative stuff that’s going on right now, which will hopefully put a smile back on your face. We bring you up to speed with what’s going on within Uni sport, music and drama. There’s also an article on how you can get involved in volunteering. Welcome from Experience Durham Durham University has a strong tradition of student involvement in an impressive range of activities beyond studying at the University. Experience Durham facilitates and supports this rich and diverse activity to ensure that students have access to the best possible networks to advance and develop their skills in sport, outreach and volunteering and, in partnership with Durham Student Union, in music and theatre. Team Durham is the home of student sport at Durham University. In 2012/13 we finished second in the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) points table, highlighting our excellence in performance level sport. Participation in sport at Durham University is amongst the highest in the UK. Thousands of students play in College teams across 17 different sports. Our community engagement teams offer activities to young people and disadvantaged adults. All facilities are open to members of the public. Our body of 15,000 students helps bring Durham and the surrounding area to life with a wide range of vibrant theatre and music events that are open to everyone every week of term. Students produce, manage, direct and perform a wide variety of theatrical genres from musicals to comedies, tragedies to pantomimes. The home of Durham Student Theatre is the Assembly Rooms Theatre on the Bailey in Durham. Performances also take place in our World Heritage Site locations. Durham student musicians regularly perform all types of music, from Chamber Choirs to

string orchestras, Big Bands and folk music, in venues across the city including Durham Cathedral. Students and staff are committed to improving and engaging with local communities through our two volunteering schemes, freely giving hundreds of hours to support those communities through tutoring and befriending projects, conservation work etc. Durham University is a welcoming community and Experience Durham invites staff, students and the wider community to come together to enjoy the musical and theatrical performances that our students put on; to come and cheer our high performing sports teams; to use our fitness suites and participate in activity classes, or to engage with our staff in their community outreach work. Student Community Action Report

With 800 new volunteers, the start of this academic year looked to be a good one for Student Community Action (SCA) and, looking back at the last term, it has been a fantastic start! Remembrance Sunday. Student Community Action welcomed members of the public and the university to enjoy tea and cakes at St John’s College after the Remembrance Sunday Cathedral service and provided a chance for people of all ages to get together and commemorate members of the armed forces who sacrificed themselves in WWI. The event was a great success attracting over 60 people including many members of the local community who were impressed by the work of SCA and the desire of students to serve, and get to know, the Durham community.

Dr Who’s enemies celebrated his 50th birthday in Stockton Central Library where SCA volunteers ran craft activities for local children. There was also an opportunity to meet life-sized Daleks and see the TARDIS up close. Our volunteers even got a cheeky photo whilst they were there! Over the term SCA ran a number of tea parties for local care homes. These included a Christmas party and one, most notably, for

As our projects continue to multiply and grow, it’s good to look at some of the more memorable moments over the term. English Corner kick-started the year with a pizza night to enable international students to converse with native English speakers; Computeas brought Durham’s over 50s up to speed with Facebook; the Thurston project put on a fabulous Christmas show of ‘The Wizard of OZ’ and MFL brought the delights of lebkuchen to a primary school classroom.

If you are wondering why you embarked on your degree in the first place and what it was you loved about your subject, maybe you could try tutoring some local GCSE and A level students. It’s only an hour a week, 7pm-8pm Monday-Thursday, or, perhaps you are bored of the library and you fancy getting out and about with some gardening at 2pm Wednesday in Durham City. Alternatively we have a new Dance and Drama Group at 7pm-9pm on Tuesdays in a local community centre. Team Durham Michaelmas Term round-up The Tennis Club have secured the most BUCS points so far with 220, while Hockey (208) and Lacrosse (187) round off the top three. Highlights? The Women’s Lacrosse squad beat an England Elite and Development squad 17-7, extending their unbeaten record. The fixture marked the official opening, by Sport England, of the Rubber Crumb facility at Maiden Castle. The Men’s Football 1st XI, in their first season in Premier North, secured a memorable 3- 0 opening home win against the reigning champions Loughborough.

HANNAH LOWTHER TEAM DURHAM PRESIDENT Eleven seasons of British Universities and College Sport (BUCS) competition has seen Loughborough dominate. The record breaking first term however, saw the Palatinates provide their biggest ever challenge, topping the points table on several occasions, including during the final week. This is a huge achievement as Loughborough had always been top after October. Loughborough have now regained the lead following the Swimming Short Course Championships, but the Palatinates are comfortable in second place on 1980 pts, 253 ahead of Bath. 79 University teams compete in the BUCS fixtures programme. A further 8 University clubs take part in one off events. In 1292 fixtures, the Palatinates were victorious in 816, a win percentage of 63%. Twelve Durham 1st teams currently sit top of their respective Premier North divisions including Basketball, Hockey, Lacrosse, Rugby Union, Tennis and Water Polo. Men’s Fencing, Women’s Football and Women’s Lacrosse are already guaranteed Premier North titles.

A partnership with the Army saw 12 Club Presidents, team captains and coaches attend a leadership training weekend with the Northumbrian Officer Training Corps. Students had the opportunity to tackle the Army assault course. Attention now turns to the latter stages of BUCS league and cup competitions, with many of our teams tipped to succeed at the BUCS finals on March 25th-26th in Surrey.

DUMS Hitting the right note 10

Durham’s talented musicians have been incredibly busy recently! Here’s a rundown of what we’ve been up to:Before Christmas, top choral singers were put through their paces by recently appointed Honorary Fellow Ralph Allwood MBE.

Durham University Symphony Orchestra gave an amazing account of Vaughan Williams’s monumental Fifth Symphony.

Durham Opera Ensemble wowed audiences with their Darkness and Light production.

Castle’s top musicians put on Bach’s festive Christmas Oratorio. Chamber Choir packed out the Cathedral Chapter House. Big Band sold out gigs at Durham Students Union and Matt & Phreds Jazz Club in Manchester. Choral Society took on Handel’s famous Messiah. A Cappella packed out the music department for their first ever concert.

Concert Band and Brass Band worked with schools in the area. Durham University Music Society held their first ever London event – drinks in Convent Garden and held a dinner for 180 students. It’s quite a list, and of course we haven’t been able to mention the hundreds of other performances that took place round the university. We’re busy…you get the idea! This term sees a return for Sir Tom Allen giving a DUMS Masterclass on 10th March. There’ll also be DUMS Musicians’ Dinner at Hatfield, Mendelssohn’s complete organ sonatas, Bach’s St John Passion with Chamber Choir and some amazing soloists. There’ll be more jazz with Big Band and we’re visited by world-renowned pianist Martin Roscoe!

We’re busy… you get the idea!

On top of all of that, there’ll be an enormous concert for Choral Society, Chamber Choir and DUOS in the Cathedral AND a London concert at St John’s Smith Square with the London Chorus and New London Orchestra.

Lights, Camera, Action

at DST

2013 was a year of development for Durham Student Theatre, but there are still plenty of highlights to be celebrated. The Edinburgh Fringe In August, DST took 9 productions to the Edinburgh Festival. Most DST shows received 4 star reviews, with a few gaining the coveted 5 star rating. One of our members, Idgie Beau, received a National Student Drama Festival Commendation for her play ‘A Hundred Minus One Day’.

Shincliffe Primary to present a show entitled ‘The Last Word’. DST worked backstage, creating a collaboration between the community and the university. DST has also been working closely with Enter CIC, a local charity that works with underprivileged young adults and children in and around Ferryhill.

Last term, Durham Student Theatre saw over 70 performances with members involved across Durham at the Assembly Rooms Theatre, Caedmon Hall, the Norman Chapel, Fountains Hall and more! With 20 individual shows, audiences were spoilt for choice. Congratulations to both The Importance of Being Earnest and Jerusalem for almost selling out The Assembly Rooms Theatre!

DUAFC A success story Durham University Association Football Club (DUAFC) have enjoyed a meteoric rise through the ranks in recent seasons. Just three years ago they were competing in division Northern 3B of the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sports) league pyramid, but an incredible sequence of three successive promotions means they now play in the highest echelon of university football. In 2010/11 they climbed out of Northern 3B with ease, and then maintained their form the following season, finishing top of Northern 2B without dropping a point. A mass exodus of players followed due to graduations, but in the 2012/13 season a new-look team managed to overcome the likes of Leeds Met, Leeds and Liverpool en

Durham’s home. Sheffield Hallam, Northumbria and Nottingham make up the rest of the numbers, in a compact six-team league. The BUCS league season consists of just ten initial league games (home and away against position dictates their draw in the BUCS Premier Leagues merge. Durham currently sit in fourth position, after recording wins over Sheffield Hallam and a remarkable double over Loughborough. Attention will soon turn to the knockout phase of the season, when Durham have the

CCAFC Collingwood College Association Football Club (CCAFC) keeps growing year on year, and their dominance over the college football scene shows no sign of abating. The A team won the College Premiership title two years ago without losing a game, and retained it last year. The B team, who also compete in the highest

league (the only B team to do so), also won the cup two years ago. In addition, the E team have stormed through the leagues in recent seasons, with two successive promotions propelling them into Division 1. They are unbeaten in the league so far, and claimed the notable scalp of Van Mildert A team with a stunning 4-1 win. They are also one of four Collingwood teams in the quarter finals of the cup, meaning it is overwhelmingly likely that CCAFC will be

lifting silverware again this season. The club is expanding in numbers year on year, and a J team had to be established this campaign to cater for the demand. Club President Jeremy Talbot believes there are now roughly 180 members of CCAFC. “It’s great to see the club growing year on year and this is down to the ethos of the club. CCAFC welcome footballers of all abilities and we see the social side of the club as being just as important as the football,” he said.

Terrific Trevs Aiming to End Season as Table Toppers For one of the smallest colleges Trevelyan’s presence is definitely felt on the football field where an unbeaten winning streak has taken the Women’s team to the brink of premiership glory. Trevs is traditionally known for its musical talent but it is on the football pitch where their Women’s football team (TCWFC) have been making sweet music following a series of impressive victories which has gained them the reputation of this season’s team to beat. Only a few seasons ago TCWFC were playing in Division 1. They were promoted to the Premiership after being crowned Division 1 Champions in the 2011/12 season. However, last season came as a bit of a reality check, after cruising through the previous season beating teams 15-0 Trevs faced stiffer competition as they adjusted

to the demands of life in the Premiership. They still managed to finish a respectable 5th in the league and also made the Floodlit Cup Final for a third consecutive year yet losing to arch rivals Collingwood for a second year running. With a large intake of talented freshers, and under the guidance of coaches Chris Roy, Jen King and captain Harriet Plows, they have become genuine title contenders and are still in contention for the illustrious treble. Having captained the team for 2 seasons, Plows stated she would be “immensely proud to see Trevs win the Premiership” and revealed it would be a “massive deal” as Trevelyan is not known for being a sporty college.

Durham University finished the 2012/13 season ranked second in the British Universities and College Sport League (BUCS) and are currently retaining this position for the 2013/14 season. One team which contributes greatly to Durham’s sporting credentials is the University’s Women’s Athletic Football Club (DUWAFC). vHaving finished joint second last season the 1st team have been the dominant force in this season’s league going unbeaten and winning the Northern league in record time before Christmas. Similarly, the second team are enjoying a successful season sitting just 1 point behind local rivals, and 1st placed, Northumbria and at the time of writing are still in contention for the Cup competition. Prospects are looking very bright for both teams and it is success like this that is helping to transform Durham into one of the best institutions for Women’s Football.

Club captain and 1st team player, Anna Faux, has high hopes for DUWAFC. Faux has ambitions for both teams to win their respective Cups and for the 1st team to become Futsal champions for the 3rd consecutive year. Women’s Football has benefited from a growing profile in recent years and its increasing popularity is evident at Durham. The 2nd team was formed a few seasons ago due to increased demand and this year saw more girls than ever at trials. With more players available, both teams are going from strength to strength and are a true reflection of the talent and athletic prowess that Team Durham possesses. The 1st team will be aiming to finish the league unbeaten and are rapidly building a reputation as the team to beat. Having already secured the league, attention will soon turn to the BUCS Cup competition. Last year they were runners up but this season they hope to go one better and cement their place amongst University’s Women’s Football elite. With tough fixtures ahead, in the league and cup, for both the 1st and 2nd teams let’s hope they can continue to win and further stamp their authority on University Women’s Football. Spring style The reign of the metrosexual man is still firmly on the rise for Spring 2014. Long gone is the need for a Neanderthal appearance to prove masculinity…however a bit of stubble or neatly preened beard are always a good finishing touch to any outfit. Men’s fashion is becoming more diverse in both garments and style, with a lot more being offered this season than ever before, which I am sure will be great news for all you fashion savvy men. The Spring 2014 shows were based around block colours and made large reference to the sport trend which has been present for the last few seasons. However it was the floral trend that blossomed on the catwalk and is set to be one of this season’s biggest trends. After gracing an array of catwalks, floral has now hit the High Street but this is not a trend for those who are wary of bright, bold prints. The trend can have a feminine feel if not styled correctly however if only small elements are incorporated with the use of statement pieces, this season’s most colourful trend is simple to wear. Stripes are another trend which are continuing to prove popular. Forget the nautical look that last Spring brought, this time around it is all about horizontal and broad chunky stripes. Following on from last season, animal print remains prominent yet the key focus is now on faux snake skin rather than leopard print. This design seems to have established itself most strongly in the accessories sector, where it is used sparingly. However if you are daring enough to wear a full snake skin garment, why not? One of the most practical but stylish staples for Spring is lightweight outerwear. Designers have finally realised that the British weather is not great…unfortunately! However the one major advantage of this fashion is the wide range of coats and jackets that have been designed especially for the ‘warmer’ months and are essential editions for any wardrobe. The Spring season has witnessed the appearance of a more simplistic colour palette, with white and grey neutral tones creating some of the most effective looks. It appears that the block colour trend is on the rise, with many of the staple pieces being designed as transitional garments. This is a guarantee that the colour block trend will be growing into the Summer season if not all the way through until Autumn…but maybe for now we should look forward to the possibility of a bit of sunshine!

The trend can also be worn day and night through different color variations of the flowers. A floral wrap skirt for example can be worn during the day with a lightweight top and patent point flats and on the night the flats can be swapped for a chunky pointed heel and paired with a structured blazer.
