I bought the Hyundai Grand i10 Sportz variant because of the premium looks and features it has to offers at a very reasonable price. I haven’t been on long trips with the vehicle as it has only been one and a half month since I purchased the Grand i10 Sportz. But I use this car on a daily basis for commuting. Inside the valley, this car handles the roads pretty well; the suspensions offer a comfortable drive even though bumpy roads filled with potholes.

The Grand i10 Sportz has an adequate ground clearance for the streets of Nepal and the mileage is good as well. Besides the sporty exterior of the car, the main reason why I bought this car was because of its interior. The interior on this car has a premium feel to it; the seats are cozy & comfortable and the inbuilt sound system is good. Also, the car has adequate space for both the driver and passengers.

The car comes equipped with features such as ABS and EBD which gives me more confidence at high speeds and the gear box is really smooth. The car feels really steady on the roads and feels planted around corners.

But just to give you a sneak peek on some of the hot stuff going on this year at NADA; brand new launches by the American carmaker Jeep and motorcycle icon Harley Davidson along with the classical Italian motorcycle brand, SWM. Then we have exciting launches from Hyundai coming in with the Ioniq Electric. Motorcycle brands include TVS launching the Apache RR310 and Yamaha with the R15 V3.0.

Toyota is a solid brand loved by all and they’ve definitely brought everyone a treat to Nepal. The Toyota Rush is a Compact SUV that’s designed to deliver in our daily geography. With that being said, we just can’t seem to get over its edgy design and tall clearance!

But wait, we’ve got more compact SUV’s! Hyundai’s Creta and Mahindra’s XUV 500 Plush are also some fine crafts from their respective brands and are definitely excellent choices and options we’d definitely recommend to our beloved readers.

NIU is the best-selling electric scooter brand around the world and we’ve also gone on to interview their C.E.O., Pranayna K.C. who was generous enough to give us an interesting insight to their plans and Nepal’s electric vehicle market.

Of course, that’s not just all the people we’ve interviewed. Ashish Sinha and Kalash Tuladhar, founders of Iron Monk Works, also were generous in sharing their vision which we can all relate to. With their expertise in working with exotic motorcycle brands backed up with a thorough level of technical experience and wisdom, we believe they’re what Nepal’s motorcycles need.

Autolife is a strong advocate for safety and naturally this issue we continue with our Riding gear series with riding pants this time and featured pointers for road hazards. These articles definitely will help to increase your data base on safety, so be sure to give them a read too.

Honda Civic Facelift Revealed- India Bound

Honda India had announced earlier this year, that they will be launching three new cars in India somewhere around 2019.

However, the big news is that the Civic facelift has just been revealed, and well it is amazing in every aspect as compared to the present Honda Civic.

On the outside, the front ‘wing’ is finished in piano black instead of the chrome bar, a reworked, more angular front bumper with chrome accents for the fog lamp housings and a chrome strip for the rear bumper. Rounding off the list of cosmetic updates are new designs for the alloy wheels. There’s also a ‘Sport’ trim on offer internationally, with 18-inch wheels, a splitter-style rear bumper, rear spoiler and added black detailing for the fascia.

Inside, the Civic facelift gets Honda’s updated seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Also, on the standard Civic facelift is Honda’s Sensing suite of safety features, which includes a collision warning and mitigation system with automatic braking, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and more.

Under the hood, Honda is expected to introduce the Civic facelift with a 1.8-litre, 140hp petrol engine, along with the 1.6-litre Earth Dreams diesel engine, making 120hp and 300Nm – the same engine that’ll also be powering the CR-V. Additionally, Honda could also pair the diesel with a nine-speed automatic, just like the CR-V.

TVS Apache 160 4V launched

Jagdamba Motors, the sole distributor of TVS motorcycles in Nepal has launched the much-awaited race machine, Apache 160 4V on 25th August, 2018. The launch event took place at Bhrikutimandap and Jagdmaba Motors organized a grand event in which they hosted a concert along with a motorcycle stunt show. Upon the launch of their new Apache 160 4V, they handed over the keys of the Apache to the first 4 customers of the bike.

BAJAJ 150 TWIN DISC LAUNCHED IN NEPAL HH Bajaj, the sole distributor of Bajaj motorcycles and the highest motorcycle selling company in Nepal have announced the launch of the all-new Pulsar 150 TD (Twin Disc). The much-awaited Bajaj Pulsar 150 TD comes at an irresistible introductory price of Rs.2,55,900. Bajaj Pulsar 150 TD features twin disc brakes, sharper design and new color schemes. It will be available in three dual tone colors – Black Blue, Black Red and Chrome Black. These three new colors are available exclusively for the twin disc variant of the Pulsar 150.

Apart from dual disc brake set-up, the new Pulsar 150 also gets split seats, split grab rails, longer wheelbase and a thicker 37mm front fork and 120mm wide rear tyre. Pulsar 150 TD variant has also undergone significant improvements in noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) due to optimization of engine and chassis touch points. The new Pulsar 150 TD is targeted for modern youth seeking in comfort, performance and mileage of bike in a sportier option. Other new features included are wet multiplate clutch, air cooling system and 5-Map CDI ignition system.

Hyundai Motor Company, Seoul announced on 16th August, 2018 that the company has received five additional Communication Design accolades for 2018 for its creative and innovative design following past recognition from the design industry’s prestigious Red Dot Awards.

Suzuki India has finally launched the updated 2018 Ciaz mid-size sedan. The new Ciaz is available in petrol-manual & automatic and diesel-manual. The petrol-manual and diesel-manual are each available in 4 trims, while the petrol-automatic is available in 3 trims.

Hyundai SOLATI Moving Hotel– ‘Best of the Best’ in Sound Design The Red Dot Award’s prestigious ‘Best of the Best’ award in the Sound Design category was granted to the Hyundai SOLATI Moving Hotel, a luxury light van developed in collaboration with SM Entertainment, a renowned entertainment group in South Korea. The vehicle offers space where celebrities from SM Entertainment can work and rest comfortably.

Hyundai Pavilion– ‘Winner’ in Brand Experience Installation Hyundai was also a winner for its Hyundai Pavilion Spatial Communication, which was launched at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and has since been redeployed in Seoul to provide more opportunities to the public to experience the awardwinning exhibition for themselves. With its new title, ‘The Seed of New Society,’ the pavilion is based at Songwon Art Center in Seoul and will be open until the 30th of December, 2018.

The facelift is identifiable with its new grille design with chrome garnish on higher-spec trims, and LED headlamps and tail-lamps, new front and rear bumpers and 16-inch alloy wheels on the topspec variant. Equipment levels on the new Ciaz have also been enhanced with the update. While dual-front airbags and ABS remain standard across the range, a speed alert system, rear parking sensors and seat belt reminders for the driver and front passenger are also part of the package.

Hyundai Pavilion– ‘Winner’ in Sound Design Hyundai Pavilion was also a winner for its creative sound design, which used acoustic staging to create unique soundscapes throughout the exhibition, such as creating the illusion of an ever-rising tone symbolizing the charging of a car-battery, and wave form synthesis being applied to merge a piano tone with the sound of wind, creating an ethereal sound to represent the vastness of space. The entire concept was united by the Hyundai Motor’s brand sound universe, creating a holistic, immersive brand experience.

The updated Ciaz gets larger 1.5-litre K15B four-cylinder motor with micro-hybrid tech which makes 104hp and 138Nm of peak torque, with an ARAI-certified fuel economy of 21.56kpl for the manual version and 20.28kpl for the automatic. Gearbox options include a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic transmission.

However, the Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre diesel engine remains unchanged and makes the same 90hp and 200Nm of torque.

Hyundai Motor was also a winner (as a client) in Film & Animation for its Geneva Motor Show brand content film made in partnership with INNOCEAN Worldwide Europe, and a winner (as a client) in Interface & User Experience Design for its driver & secondary car accident prevention Safety Hologram created in partnership with Dongseo University.

NEPAL EXCLUSIVE: JEEP COMPASS IN NEPAL

Morang Auto Works Pvt.Ltd., the authorized distributor of JEEP in Nepal has established its new showroom at Narayanchaur – Naxal featuring the new JEEP Compass.

As we have mentioned earlier on our magazine and website about the upcoming vehicles in the Nepalese market, JEEP Compass was one of them. And now, JEEP Compass has finally landed in Nepal and the company is all set to launch the product soon in the market.

The new Compass has a lot of design resemblance from its elder sibling, so much that some people refer to it as the smaller Grand Cherokee. The signature seven slot grille has been carried over to the Compass as well. The headlamps are sleek and house a LED daytime running lamps in them.

The fog lamp has been incorporated into the bumper and has a dual tone effect. The SUV profile is carried very well with big wheel arches under which the 18inch allow wheels have been fitted. The bold design has been brought over to Jeeps smallest offering, but the smallest offering is not meant to be under looked. It comes with a respectable 1.4L MultiAir petrol engine producing 162 PS and 250Nm of torque and a 2.0 L MultiJet diesel engine producing 173PS and 350Nm of torque.

The interior of the Compass looks upmarket with a good amount of room for the driver and the passengers. It offers 480 liters of cargo space and if that is not enough then you fold the rear seats to unlock more cargo space. The Compass has a lot to prove since it will be competing against vehicles that have been around for some time and have gained a loyal customer base. The main competition will come from vehicles like the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, MG GS, Toyota Rav4, Nissan Xtrail, Honda CR-V, XUV500, etc. with such tough competition it has a lot to prove. The compass will be available in three trims, Sport, Longitude and Limited.

Agni Incorporated Pvt. Ltd., the authorized distributor of Mahindra vehicles in Nepal has launched the new XUV 500 Plush which sets a new benchmark in the premium SUV segment with a bold new design, plush, luxurious interiors and higher power and torque. IONIQ ELECTRIC ARRIVES IN NEPAL

W

ith all the technological advancements in the automobile industry and the way that people are actually starting to be conscious about the environment, we believe that it will only be a matter of time before we see Hybrid and Electric Vehicles zooming around on the streets. By saying that, we can see a lot of big automobile brands hopping on the band wagon and coming up with their iterations of hybrid and electric vehicles. This time around we will be looking at what Hyundai has to offer in this segment, the Hyundai Ioniq.

Electric variant of the Ioniq gets a blanking plate instead of the trapezoidal grille that hybrid variant gets. The car comes equipped with LED headlights with DRLs and LED taillights. The windshield is raked to give more of an aerodynamic feel and horizontal accents run through the sides of the body to give the Ioniq more of an edgy look.

Overall, the Ioniq has not seen much changes from the previous generation and Hyundai have given the Ioniq the tidy up treatment to keep it looking simple yet elegant.

The compact 4-door sedan has already been in the market with three variants since 2016, and we will be finally seeing the Ioniq here in Nepal. Hyundai had initially launched the Ioniq in Korea with the hybrid and all electric variant which was followed by a plug-in hybrid variant in 2017. All of these were the first generation of the Ioniq and have been creating a buzz for itself in the hybrid scene, and trying to compete with the Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Bolt in the global market. As of now, we shall be looking into the all-electric variant of the Ioniq and can only hope that it will actually be a start of a revolutionizing trend in the EV market of Nepal.

The insides of the Ioniq look similar to other smaller cars that Hyundai has to offer. The Ioniq offers a spacious cabin with seating for 5 passengers. The interiors have been efficiently designed with eco-friendly materials and comes equipped with intuitive controls and technology. The Hyundai Ioniq comes well-equipped with standard features such as heated front seats, push-button start, automatic temperature control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Tech features include a 5.0-inch screen, HD and Satellite Radio. Hyundai has also replaced the conventional shift and parking-brake levers on the tunnel with a set of buttons and have placed the controller for the interactive display in the center of the dashboard.

Also, the EV gets seven airbags as standard; Advanced dual front airbags (SRS) with Occupant Classification System (OCS), Driver and front passenger sideimpact airbags (SRS) and Side-curtain airbags (SRS) (front and rear passengers). The Ioniq even gets standard features such as Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) with individual tire pressure indicator, Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Traction Control System (TCS).

The Ioniq Electric’s powertrain features an 88-kilowatt electric motor which generates a maximum power of 118 hp and 295 Nm of torque. This powertrain includes a single-speed pushbutton transmission and a 28-kWh lithium-ion polymer battery located under the rear seat. Hyundai has claimed the range of the Ioniq to be 199.5 kms on a full charge. Hyundai equips the Ioniq Electric with a 6.6 kW fast-charging port on its left rear side and can be fully charged at home in about 4 to 5 hours with a dedicated 220/240-volt outlet.

The Ioniq Electric comes with front wheel drive and is equipped with power assisted steering to make things easier. Hyundai has also equipped the EV with regenerative braking system that uses third-generation recuperating stopping system for lower friction and quieter operation than typical systems. Drivers can use paddles mounted on the steering wheel column to adjust the regenerative braking force for Normal, Eco, or Sport driving modes. The different modes either charge more when decelerating or lighten up on the charging feature for easier cruising and a more normal deceleration feel. Overall, the Hyundai Ioniq seems to be quite the surprise and we can’t wait to get our hands on the EV and give you our thoughts on how the vehicle performs.

ROAD HAZARDS

We at Autolife have probably discussed more than a thousand times on how to stay safe on the roads. From defensive riding, riding gears, low light conditions to the wet monsoon conditions but now we want to talk about the things you’ll actually want to look out for in our day to day traffic. If you’re still trying to get accustomed to our traffic conditions then you’ll definitely want to give this list a thorough read and if you’re a veteran on these roads then see if you can relate to these; a refresher wouldn’t hurt either. With that being said and done, let’s get started.

PEDESTRIANS Every day, we can see a lot of people walking on the roads, this is true especially in commercial urban areas. However, wherever it may be, the problem is that, with sidewalks being so small and almost non-existent, and people tend to walk on roads that are meant for vehicles. What’s worse is that people consciously or unconsciously will not be completely aware of the surrounding traffic and that a decent percentage of the walking population will cross roads with poor diligence.

Crossing roads looking anywhere but towards oncoming traffic, crossing diagonally in dense traffic, running, crossing too slow, walking too far from the edge of the roads are some of the things you’ll want to be on the lookout for.

ANIMALS Since we humans share the Earth with its other inhabitants, we’ve also got to be alert for the animals taking their regular stroll. You’ll never know when a dog will pop out of nowhere or suddenly find a cow resting in the middle of the road. Heck, you can even find a whole troop of monkeys hoarding around the roads in forestry areas. The thing about animals is that they don’t really have a knack for being aware about traffic so they just might decide to cross the road and appear in your trajectory the moment you happen to pass them by. We don’t

know about you but we wouldn’t want to bear the guilt of taking the life of any passing critters.

MUDDY PATCHES The existence of the term “Hilomandu”, basically says it all.

In the present month, with little to no signs of relief from the rains, our roads have come to remain muddy. Muddy surfaces, as you might already know, creates conditions for low traction causing your tires to slip. These conditions make it dangerous especially for those on two wheelers as you become increasingly prone to low siding. To put it simply, keep away from mud if possible and in the event you can’t avoid it then maintain a slow and controlled pace on such surfaces.

POTHOLES These are a common sight in our country and it definitely becomes a hazard while travelling at higher speeds. You might be on a freeway going at 70kmph and a pothole might just surprise you with no warning whatsoever. Not only in hitting one you risk bending your rims but the sudden bump may cause you to lose control of your vehicle causing you to crash.

So, with that being said add that to the list of things you’ll want to look out for.

SLOW MOTORISTS Yes, being slow definitely can cause a series of problems.

Although it is safer than their counterparts, going too slow actually does create some road hazards. Picture this: when a motorist takes their own sweet time, one, that person agitates the people behind him/her because it slows the flow of traffic, two, with the ineffective enforcement of traffic laws, people tend to overtake their slower counterparts from anywhere possible, and three, when they do that, the person overtaking may end up hitting another motorist because the slow one blocked the view in front of them. VEHICLES ENTERING LANES Similar to the buses and the unaware motorists, other vehicles like bikes and cars have their operators barely looking on to oncoming traffic and just dash out or force their way onto the fast lanes and by now, we don’t have to tell you what this causes or how to get around it (just in case you don’t: Stay Alert).

BLIND CORNERS

right to choose a pace they’re comfortable in so the best thing we can suggest is get around them as swiftly and safely as possible.

Not being able to see things is dangerous when you’re moving around at speeds. That’s why you should be cautious around blind corners because there just might be an idiot around the corner. Here’s a true story, one of our team members was riding on his bike and at a blind corner there was this dude on a scooter trying to do a U turn while looking the other way.

Despite the suddenness of the situation, fortunately, he had good reflexes and stopped an inch away from colliding from the dude.

TRAFFIC POLICE Now, this technically isn’t a road hazard but you do have to realize that you shouldn’t mess around with the traffic police.

They are something you should look out for since they’re usually trying to do their jobs, meaning they’ll be out in the middle of the road, especially, when they’re locked on to a traffic law violator which is when they tend to cease exercising safe crossing precautions. Unless you like jail, you do not want them to be something you hit.

BUSES Buses are something you really should look out for when you’re out on the road. I mean, the driver and conductor are people after all, trying to make a living so, they’ll be out there rushing over to every stop and every pedestrian that is a potential passenger. This causes them to shift around unexpectedly and you do not want to be in their line when they do that. Now we are not trying to say that the measures they exercise are okay but we are trying to explain what’s going on, why it happens and suggest how you can get through it which is simply to keep a good distance from those buses.

BUS STOPS When you are around bus stops or a bus that has stopped, be careful cause there just might be a passenger that will pop up from in front of the bus that will catch you by surprise. Not to mention that the bus drivers themselves might be in a hurry and risk hitting you while trying to get back onto the flowing lanes.

OVERTAKING ON BAD ROADS There are plenty of patches of bad roads in our country and we have to remember that it’s not only us that are trying to navigate around them. We go through it with other people so remember: while we’re dodging stones and avoiding the puddles of mud, we shouldn’t forget the others around us. Make sure that before you over take, you’re sure the guy in front knows about your intentions. Or else you might just get body slammed while the guy in front of you tries dodging the rock in front of them.

UNAWARE MOTORISTS While it shouldn’t be necessary to say that everyone on the road should be vigilant all the time, there are people that ride/drive around with little regard for anything other than what’s in front of them. Not only that, they sometimes tend to unconsciously change lanes and might bump into others. So, stay alert otherwise you just might be fixing the hideous scratch or visiting your doctor.

However, as time passed, the competition in the mid-sized sedan segment grew and Suzuki has responded with the 2018 Ciaz which gets fine cosmetic touches, additional features and a new petrol engine. Here are the key features you need to know about the 2018 Suzuki Ciaz facelift.

The Suzuki Ciaz is the longest and widest car in its segment, and as always has the longest wheelbase. This can be translated to the mid-size sedan from Suzuki having the most cabin space and more importantly, spacious legroom at the rear.

The Ciaz also gets 16-inch precision-cut alloy wheels in the dual-tone Metallic Pebble Grey finish but one of the main

highlights of the 2018 Suzuki Ciaz is the new and bolder styling. The chrome-induced front provides room for a redesigned grille that’s wider and black meshed. The updated headlight has been designed to match the grille and gets LED daytime running lights. Also, the bumper is designed with larger air intakes and new fog lamp enclosures with LED fog lamps while the rear gets minimal changes barring the new LED combination taillights and slightly revised bumper that gets a touch of chrome garnish.

Suzuki has retained the same layout for its interior on the 2018 Ciaz, except now, the cabin comes with a Birch blonde wood grain accents with a low-gloss finish. Suzuki has also added in a couple of useful features like the Eco illumination in the speedometer which actively changes the color based on the driving pattern. It’s been over a year since I bought the TATA Tiago and I must say I am very satisfied with the Tiago. Up until now, speaking of long tours, I have been to Pokhara on this car but I have driven it to various places inside Kathmandu valley. What really impressed me is the mileage that this car offers. Thanks to eco mode in TATA, I only had to refill once on my trip to Pokhara and back to Kathmandu. Tiago has good ground clearance and it gives me confidence to take it to any kind of roads that are filled with rough patches and potholes.

The adjustable steering makes the driving experience more pleasurable. Even though I have other vehicles, I prefer the TATA Tiago over them because inside the valley, the car is very comfortable to drive around, even on the tight spots and crowded places because of the compact built and design. On top of that, the safety features it is equipped with, such as child lock means I can be carefree when I am driving with my kids in the back. Plus, no matter how bumpy the road is, I don’t have to worry because the suspensions do their job very well. Even on off roads like those at Balthali, the car handled pretty well which is why, I think it is a perfect family car, especially for Nepalese people.

I have been very satisfied with the customer care and service center of TATA. I keep getting calls every now and then from TATA asking me about how the car is doing. I am having an amazing experience owning the Tiago and I have been referring TATA vehicles to everyone whenever it’s possible. Even recently, while I was having a conversation with my office colleague, I had referred to him about TATA and he seems to be happy with the decision to buy TATA.

Suzuki’s new Ciaz offers improved levels of safety with the inclusion of Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Hill Hold function that’s standard on the petrol automatic version. The speed alert system, co-passenger seatbelt reminder and reverse parking sensors now come standard across available options. In addition, the safety features that Ciaz gets are dual airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist.

However, Suzuki could have increased the number of airbags for at least the higher end variants.

The Suzuki Ciaz also features a Speed Alert System (SAS) which can be adjusted from the car’s MID unit. This SAS activates at speeds of 80kph and above, and will warn drivers by sounding off beeps at intervals until the vehicle slows down. The 2018 Ciaz is also the first Suzuki offering to feature LED fog lamps and it also gets LED headlights.

The biggest change on the 2018 Suzuki Ciaz is the new 1.5-litre K-Series petrol engine with micro-hybrid tech. The new petrol engine replaces the 1.4-litre unit that was seen on its predecessor and comes with improved performance. The Ciaz’s engine comes paired with a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic transmission. The four-cylinder engine churns out 13 percent more power with 103 bhp available at 6000 rpm, while peak torque output has gone up to 138 Nm at 4400 rpm. The spotlight is on the engine’s fuel economy; the new engine also comes with the Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki (SHVS) technology for improved efficiency.

As a result, the new 2018 Ciaz returns an ARAI certified figure of 21.56 kmpl despite the bigger engine.

yundai Creta, a name everyone has heard so much about. The vehicle that single handedly changed the compact SUV segment. Known by most as the best vehicle in the segment, which can be justified by the overwhelming sales figure of the Creta. So how does one improve on a car many deemed to be perfect? Well the people of Hyundai know exactly what to do to make the Creta an even better vehicle. The Creta was a very well acclaimed vehicle when it was first introduced into the market and is still doing very well. Now with the competition slowly catching up Hyundai has brought the facelifted Creta into the Nepal market to keep a strong hold on the top step of its category. So how much has changed with this facelift and is it enough to keep the competition at bay? We look into this as we test drive the facelifted 2018 Hyundai Creta 1.6 Petrol SX (O).

EXTERIOR

The exterior is where most of the changes have taken place in the facelift, the front end more specifically.

The design language of Hyundai has carried on to the Creta as well as it has with the rest of the Hyundai line up of vehicles. The LED DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) move down from the headlight to the fog lamp and in between the fog lamp is where the signature cascading grille has been placed. The sides have been left majorly unchanged except for the new diamond cut 17inch alloy wheel design. The five spoked dual tone fan shaped wheels give the sides a refreshed look. The taillights have been slightly revised as well getting a more modern look to it. With all the upgrades it feels more bold and elegant than its predecessor which is quite an accomplishment because the old model was a very good looking vehicle too. The fact that the top variant the SX (O) (the model that we tested) had an electronically operated sunroof made the vehicle more premium feeling. The bold new front and rear skid plates make the Creta look beefier.

INTERIOR

The main change in the interior has to be the airy feeling which comes due to the sunroof. The interior is lit up better which gives a more spacious feel despite the dimensions remaining unchanged. Apart from the sunroof the electronically adjustable driver seat also is a very useful addition to the Creta, it makes adjusting the seat position that much easier. You don’t have to rock the seat back and forth to find the perfect position, you can just slide the power seat adjuster forward and backward to set the position and similar for the back rest also. What’s new is the sliding armrest which makes long drives even more comfortable with a place to rest your elbow. Hyundai’s are known for well-built cabins and that is exactly what you will find in the new Creta, the black and beige interior looks good together and the quality of the materials are pretty good. The leather seats are comfortable and have a touch of premium feel in them with the door panel’s wrapped in leather too. The Electrochromic Mirror (ECM) senses light and when there is someone behind your vehicle with their high beam on the mirror will automatically dim itself to reduce the reflection. The infotainment system is very easy and intuitive to use, with android auto and apple car play as standard. If your phone has wireless charging capability than you won’t have to be fiddling around with cables since the SX (O) variant comes with a wireless charging pad for your devices that support it. Talking about wireless connectivity, the new Creta also gets a first in segment wireless connection with the car using an app to check the status of the vehicle and other valuable information.

With the tech development on such a rapid pace we see new technology been introduced every now and then. The new Creta introduces a Smart Key Band that works as a wireless key and a Bluetooth watch to some extent. With the band on you can lock and unlock the car, this new 36

feature is a segment first and could be a very attractive new feature. The Smart Key band also keeps track of your health by counting the total steps taken during the day, the amount of calories burned, monitor your sleep, work as an alarm, notify when you get a call, etc. It can handle a lot of things which makes it a very versatile feature.

PERFORMANCE

The performance however remains unchanged from before as it uses the same 1.6 petrol engine producing 121.3 BHP @ 6400 RPM and 151 Nm of torque @ 4850 RPM. There are also two diesel engine on offer, a 1.4 Liter unit producing 88.7 BHP @ 4000 RPM and 219.7 Nm torque @ 1500 – 2750 RPM and a 1.6 liter engine 126.2 BHP @ 4000 RPM and 259.87 Nm torque @ 1500 – 3000 RPM. The engine under the hood of our test vehicle was the most popular option being the 1.6 Liter petrol engine. The engine was a strong performer in the previous variant too and the fact that the same engine has been carried over to the facelift shows that there was little to no improvements required in the engine department. That being said we however wished if one of these compact SUVs would pack in a 4 Wheel Drive (4WD) drivetrain as well, if this were to happen then it would unlock the full potential of the vehicle which is being slightly limited by the Front Wheel Drive (FWD) drivetrain. The addition of safety features such as Hillstart Assist Control (HAC), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Antilock Braking System (ABS), etc., make driving the new Creta safer. The HAC makes sure that the car doesn’t roll backwards when starting on a hill which is quite a common sight to see when the person driving the car is not very experienced. The ESC and the VSM make sure that the vehicle doesn’t lose traction and maintain stability for secure driving along with ABS to make sudden stops safer.

HANDLING AND COMFORT

The handling of the Creta is sorted out very well; it is focused more towards the ease of driving rather than performance driving. This means that the Creta is meant to be driven more in the city and the highway than high-speed runs through the canyons.

This doesn’t mean the Creta is a slouch in that respect but it is intended for a different purpose.

The vehicle feels planted and plush, the suspensions do the job well in filtering out the bumps and only the big bumps make it into the cabin. Comfort is as very good in the vehicle as it has ample of head and leg room with well-padded seats. We had the opportunity to go on a road trip to Chitwan on a Hyundai Creta and a Hyundai I20 Elite, while on that road trip we pushed the Creta to its limit and that is when we found out how well balanced the Creta was. It was very capable in the highway and very comfortable throughout the journey. With there being minimal changes to the new Creta on the handling and comfort we can tell that it will be a blast to drive on the highways with comfort and ease. With the use of cruise control the journey can be made easier.

VERDICT

The previous generation Creta was already a wellrounded package and the facelift fills in all the gaps that were left to make it an even better offering. With the new subtle changes and improvements the Creta definitely strengthens its grip on the top spot with the competition having to catch up to it. The Base 1.6 Liter Petrol version starts off from Rs. 42,96,000/to Rs. 59,56,000/- for the top spec 1.6 liter Petrol SX (O). The Creta is one compact SUV that you can absolutely not miss if you are in the market for a vehicle of this category.

part from riding the magnificent machines known as motorcycles, the art of working on one and maintaining it has its one sense of fascination. For some, it might just look like normal mechanical aspects that keep the motor running and for others it’s a passion to work with motorcycles to maintain them perfectly. Mr. Ashish Sinha and Mr. Kalash Tuladhar are two individuals who have found this passion and are among a few who are driven with a vision to change how motorcycle maintenance is looked upon. Just recently, they have established a work station of their own, called Iron Monk Works and are looking to set benchmarks in terms how they service a motorcycle. We had the chance to chat with them about their brainchild, Iron Monk, and their philosophy behind the brand. Let’s find out what they have say and we hope that maybe you will start looking at motorcycle servicing from a different perspective.

COULD YOU GIVE OUR READERS A BRIEF INSIGHT ABOUT IRON MONK? Ashish: Iron Monk is a motorcycle workshop where we claim to be specialists in superbikes and exotic vehicles along with vintage vehicles but we are open to everyone from a Honda Dio, all the way up to CBR 1000. Iron Monk started with Kalash being the brains behind it and me the small muscle behind it. We have been friends for a long time and we’ve been talking about this for 10-15 years now; not the name itself but the concept behind it. All the work that we have done so far has led us to establishing the brand.

IRON MONK WORKS SOUNDS PRETTY INTERESTING. HOW DID YOU GUYS COME UP WITH THE NAME AND WHAT’S THE MAIN SIGNIFICANCE BEHIND THE NAME AND THE LOGO? Ashish: Kalash and me both studied in the US and worked there. I used to work for a company named Iron Pony and basically the significance behind the name Iron Pony was steel horse which was another name for motorcycles. I worked with them for quite some time and they gave me pretty good foot in the door in the industry. And later, unknowingly, when we decided to move here open the shop and we were deciding what we wanted to do and what resembles the passion, so we took the Iron from the steel horse and then Monk came from the Zen of our region and culture. Basically, it was one of those names that was just thrown out there but it just resonated to us and we stuck with Iron Monk.

The logo was designed by one of our good friends at 108 Wears and it was one of the first designs that he came up with. There’s a lot of minute details on it; we got our traditional prayer wheel, then there’s the Namaste hands up top, there’s a chain going down, there’s a spark plug and the prayer wheel is actually a motorcycle tire. So, it’s basically like the world of motorcycles and the religious Zen aspect is mashed up together.

WHAT IS THE MAIN MOTIVE BEHIND CREATING THE BRAND? WHAT IS THE MAIN GOAL OR VISION THAT YOU ARE PLANNING TO ACHIEVE WITH IRON MONK WORKS? Kalash: After working in the US and gaining experience about how your vehicles are taken care of and how there’s a system for everything, you get a sense of realization that you are actually getting what you are paying for.

So there if you go to a quality workshop, you get quality service and if you go to a shady place then you get shady service.

Whereas in Nepal, if you go to any kind of place and if you’re not there while the bike is getting serviced then some one will actually take advantage of that. That’s one part where we wanted to establish ourselves as a brand that actually provides quality service and make sure that you are getting what you pay for.

Another aspect is that as the motorcycles are progressing and becoming more technically sophisticated, there aren’t as many private workshops that can work

on your vehicles apart from the dealers.

Also, the dealers are always busy and they have to take care of a lot of bikes.

And because of that time constraint, they won’t be able to take care of your bike as much as it should have been taken care of. So, our main objective is that, when a bike comes in to our workshop, we will do a complete inspection of the bike, tell the customer what needs to be done and if it’s a critical problem we try to fix it right away. Our main motive is to provide the best possible service to the customers.

Ashish: So, in short, the basic intent was to raise the bar of customer service and quality of service. But unfortunately, what we saw from our experience was that a lot of people open workshops and work on machines that people’s lives rely on, and don’t give utmost priority to their service. What we felt was that we need to create something in the private sector to showcase a cleaner and better image of what a workshop can be.

UP UNTIL NOW HOW HAVE THE CUSTOMERS BEEN RESPONDING TO THE BRAND AND THE SERVICE THAT YOU ARE PROVIDING? Ashish: Its been much better and different then what we expected it to be.

Kalash: It has just been a month that we have been operating and our customer base is growing and people are showing interest. Even if its just for a vehicle inspection, they come in or even if it’s a new purchase or motorcycles with warranty, people are coming to us for our suggestions.

Ashish: Overall, it’s going in the right direction, slightly offset from what we had initially thought but definitely a much better response that what we expected. We even got an overwhelming response at our opening with some of the finest and exotic motorcycles in the city. Things are going well and we are trying to adapt to the response that we are getting from the market.

WHAT DO YOU THINK WERE SOME OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES THAT YOU HAD TO FACE OR ARE FACING STILL TO ESTABLISH THE BRAND? Ashish: We are both new to business and what we were doing was something completely new in Nepal, and I think that it was difficult for us to actually structure it. So, because of that there were a lot of brainstorming and a lot of months were spent planning how we would be going on about it. That was one of our main challenges initially and an even bigger challenge, I think, was getting the shop built. We were lucky enough that this is a private property but at the same time, we started building January 1st and we’re still building. Sometimes the materials are not here or the labors don’t come and sometimes even if they come, they don’t work properly. So, it was a major challenge to get ethical workers to actually build the shop.

Kalash: Finding the mechanics has also been a challenge for us and we are a really short of staff at the moment. We

get a lot of bikes but it takes a lot of time to work on them. But if we had more qualified mechanics, things would’ve been much easier for us.

Ashish: Just to add on to it, with the way our society is structured, our line of work is still frowned upon. Both of us come from middle class families and they are always going on about how we went to the US and got ourselves degrees just to come back to become mechanics. I think its been a struggle for us to translate that to people about our vision. And because of such stereotype, its been difficult for us to find proper technicians and mechanics.

IN YOUR OPINION, HOW HAS THE TWO-WHEELER INDUSTRY BEEN DEVELOPING IN NEPAL? WHAT DO YOU THINK SHOULD BE CHANGED IF WE WANT TO SEE THE INDUSTRY TO GROW EVEN MORE? Ashish: If we step back in time when we started, we have to say that Iron Monk started 15 years back when we were in high school and we were trying to fix a classic 60’s Royal Enfield Standard’s engine. We had no idea what we were doing and just to get a single part for the engine we had to go around for months, talking to all sorts of people. At that time people didn’t have much knowledge about parts diagrams and vendors. So, coming from our experience, trying to fix that vintage back all way to now, the market is absolutely phenomenal right now;

there’s part available even for the most exotic motorcycles. Even in the motorcycle industry itself, its quite nice to see the diversity in all different segments.

Kalash: But as the industry is growing, the laws and regulations have been stagnant. So, it needs to be updated and needs to grow with the market. There are a lot of creative people who not only want to ride a motorcycle but customize it. There should be some allowance by the government to properly manage it and make some regulations and not have situations that sound like a kid’s game. So, the government should as well move accordingly with the changing market and see that industry still has a lot to grow.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR IRON MONK AND WHAT MORE CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU GUYS IN TERMS OF GROWTH AND EXPANSION? Ashish: A little bit of both. The workshop is actually termed as Iron Monk Works which is the phase 1 of our plan. There is a phase 2 and a phase 3 coming up; we can’t disclose it at the moment but we have already started to work on its blueprints.

However, with Iron Monk Works, we do have plans for minor expansions with the overwhelming response from the market. We are considering to expand in the valley itself and beyond it as well.

ROYAL ENFIELD 650 TWINS

Royal Enfield is a brand that isn’t affected by rationality or logic. It’s something that has become a part of our lives and for some, a dream. Commonly referred to as a lifestyle brand, Royal Enfield definitely has built its own unique charm for all motorcycle enthusiasts. Despite having changed very little since the beginning, Royal Enfield is one of the most selling bikes out in the world but this time around things for the lifestyle brand is changing.

Royal Enfield has gone down the memory lane of its glorious heritage and while they were at it, they’ve gone on to bring back the Interceptor and Continental GT. These two machines are a modern throwback of their respective originals and we can see from its unveiling at EICMA 2017 that these two have retained the classic styling with, of course, the right kinds of modifications and improvements made.

THE ENGINE

These Royal Enfield Twins share the same parallel twin cylinder engine that churns out a maximum power of 47bhp at 7100rpm and 52Nm of maximum torque at 5250rpm. The engine itself maintains the classic styling of previous generation Royal Enfields. The engine is claimed to have fewer components, less weight and easier maintenance. While Royal Enfield have mentioned that a single-piece forged crank with 270 degree firing order was developed for the way the engine feels when making its power which sounds pretty intriguing. However, the question still remains, will Royal Enfield be able to retain the familiar thump and that characteristic of linear power delivery that are loved by RE fans and enthusiasts alike.

Aside from the shared engine, there are more the two have in common. The Continental GT and Interceptor both get Bosch fuel injection system and a 6-speed gear box. Meanwhile, their brakes are taken care of by a 320 mm disc in the front and a 240 mm disc at the rear and dual channel ABS comes in as standard for the two models. Similarly, they come with the front suspension getting a 41 mm front fork and the rear suspension coming in with the traditional twin coil-over shocks.

CONTINENTAL GT

Taking inspiration from the historic 250cc Royal Enfield Continental, produced between 1963 and 1968, the Continental GT comes back with an authentic café racer style. Royal Enfield did its R&D pretty well as they’ve poured all their years of expertise into adjusting every component that factor in on the Continental GT’s handling; the steering rake, its ground clearance and lean angles all have been engineered to let the rider enjoy their Saturday corners.

Royal Enfield definitely nailed the looks department with the Continental GT, the distinctive sculpted tank, clip-on handlebars and classic-styled instrument cluster give out a café racer vibe. The rear-set foot pegs and upswept exhausts look like it’s literally asking to be leaned. The Continental GT surely looks like a bike that you can rock both on your commutes and cornering sessions.

The GT’s fuel tank capacity is at 12.5 litres while it gets a seat height that makes it easy to swing your legs over at 790 mm in the single seat variant and 793 mm in the dual seat variant. The Continental GT does weigh heavy at 199kg without fuel but it is still fair for an Enfield.

THE INTERCEPTOR

Revived from the 1960s, the Royal Enfield Interceptor sets out with the air-oil cooled parallel 650 Twin, classic headlight, twin clock front and quilted twin seat. The narrow teardrop tank is slapped with a classic badge and topped with a Monza-style fuel cap. A dual cradle frame with a rear loop makes up the core which is a way of nod to the original Interceptor.

The interceptor is the versatile one among the twins and lets you go out for those leisure cruises around town with it’s laid-back and upright riding position. However, the suspension is developed for precise and immediate handling.

Unlike the Continental GT, the Interceptor gets a fuel tank capacity that is slightly higher at 13.7 Litres for extra kilometers on those weekend rides. The Interceptor does also get an easy seat height of 804 mm which is still fair for the shorter riders and it weighs in at 203 kg without fuel.

T

oyota has been making SUVs for the longest of times and whatever rolls out of the Toyota factories gets high expectations from the consumers as they are renowned for their bulletproof reliability. Toyota has also been making 7 seater vehicles for quite some time now, so with the introduction of the Rush Toyota have mixed their experience into making a compact Seven Seater SUV. We rarely see a 7 seater in the compact SUV segment and the only other compact SUV in direct contention for the top spot in this category is the Honda BR-V; usually the compact SUVs are 5 seaters at most. So with its latest entrant in the market we take the Rush and put it through different obstacles to see how it handles it.

EXTERIOR

The Rush has a pretty striking look going on, with sharp angles and lines it tries to state its presence to those around it. Being a 7 seater SUV it is a little longer than the usual compact SUVs and does have a hint of a Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) look to it, along with a slight resemblance to its sibling the Toyota Innova Crysta. The front of the car has an aggressive touch to it with the angular horizontal slatted grille running in conjunction with the LED headlights. The slatted grille flows well with the headlight and give the front a clean look. The LED headlight is quite small are neatly tucked into the body, with a stripe of LED DRL running from the top of one side to the bottom of the other side. The fog lamp is housed in a triangular plastic housing continuing the angular design. The wheel arches are covered by plastic cladding to give it the tough off roader look. While talking about the sides of the Rush there is a crease that runs throughout the side of the vehicle and meets the taillight. The alloy wheels look well in place once again continuing the angular design of the Rush. The 290mm of ground clearance can be seen pretty evidently as the vehicle looks high off the ground. The angular design comes to an end once we reach the rear of the Rush as there is a lack of those elements; moreover the rear has a clean and simple look.

INTERIOR

The 290mm ground clearance does make it little difficult to climb into the cabin, but a running board will easily solve that issue.

Once you get into the cabin you are greeted by a pretty good looking with two tone designed interior. The seats are plush and comfortable to sit on and throughout the test ride none of us felt uncomfortable. The dash board is neatly designed and the plastics used have been given a faux stitching look to make it look like leather. All the dials and the controls have a minimalistic design making it a very simple and clean dash. The missing armrest in the middle does feel odd as it leaves a void in the interior and feels incomplete; however it’s the only thing we felt that was missing.

We put the 7 seater to the test and it proved to be pretty comfortable, the rear seats were adequate for a normal sized adult but only for short drives. If an adult has to travel in the 3rd row seats for a long distance then it will be a little difficult but the children will have no problem whatsoever. With the 3rd row seats up the boot space is compromised quite a bit and will have problem storing big items, but with the 3rd row seats down it grows to a decent sized boot.

PERFORMANCE

The 1.5 liter petrol engine produces 104 BHP @ 6000 RPM and 136 Nm of torque @ 4200 RPM. The power figures may not look very convincing at first glance which was exactly what we thought before we drove it. But the engine proved to be very well setup and it didn’t have any trouble keeping up with the

obstacles that we threw its way. The clearance was its main advantage point as it would clear most of the obstacles with ease and only very big obstacles proved to be challenging. The most challenging part was where we shot the cover photo; it was a mixture of big rocks, waterfall and mud. All the right elements to get your vehicle stuck so we were skeptical about taking the Rush to that place but we knew we had to see how it would fare in diverse conditions so we took the risk and with just a little difficulty the rush was able to cross that bad patch of terrain. The 5 speed transmission was very smooth and easy to operate. This made the journey more driver friendly, but if you want the comfort of an automatic transmission then the Rush is available with a 4 speed automatic transmission too. The engine was smooth as you would expect from a Toyota engine, free revving and very peppy.

HANDLING AND COMFORT

With the high ride height there was a little body roll, but not too much. The suspension was on the softer side so the bumps and rough patches of the road were filtered out to a large extent. The soft suspension did mean that the Rush would feel a bit out of place with pinned into a corner but that is something that you should expect when you go fast into a corner with a vehicle with soft suspensions and 290mm of ground clearance. Everything was very conveniently designed with the comfort of the driver and passenger in thought. The seats held you in place and were very comfortable, even in the 3rd row. There was decent leg room for the people in the second and the 3rd row seats, with plenty of headroom for all the passengers.

VERDICT

The Rush is Toyota’s first compact SUV in the Nepalese market and they have entered with a strong competitor on their hands. The only direct rival to the Rush has to be another Japanese vehicle, the Honda BR-V which is also a compact SUV with a 7 seater configuration. The Rush gets a host of features as standard from the base model such as 6 airbags, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Hill Start Assist (HSA), Antilock Braking System (ABS), etc., all these comes as standard on the Rush which got it a solid 5 star rating on the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). Starting from Rs. 61, 90,000/- for the base manual variant to Rs. 75, 50,000/- for the top Spec Automatic variant. It is slightly priced higher than its competitors but it comes with Toyota’s reliability. So if you want a 7 seater SUV that is decently priced with good performance and comfort then the RUSH should definitely be on your list.

DO YOU BELIEVE ELECTRIC SCOOTERS CAN REPLACE THE COMBUSTION TWO WHEELERS IN NEPAL?

Absolutely! Number one is because the government have been taking initiatives for a country that doesn’t have a lot of carbon emissions norms and we have been moving forward. Also, considering that almost 90% of our automobile imports come from India, the fact that India has promised in the global platform that they are going to go all green from 2030 so we will have no other option than to choose electric vehicles as an alternative. Not just that, but the Nepalese crowd is starting to get aware and people starting to adapt to smart technologies more. The smart technology captures the market and EVs are smart. So, there is a definitive growth in the EV sectors and maybe one day it will eventually replace combustion engines.

THERE ARE OTHER ELECTRIC TWO-WHEELER DISTRIBUTORS IN NEPAL SO HOW WOULD YOU SAY NIU STANDS OUT?

First of all, the product itself is amazing and NIU is one of the highest selling electric scooters globally. Given the global success it has had and the fact that NIU has crossed 1 Billion kilometers in two years speaks for itself.

Even in the context of Nepal, right now, all of our marketing is word of mouth; people who have bought it have liked it so much that they have established a trust with the brand. Another aspect that sets NIU apart is our team, and by that, I mean if you see the work culture here you will see a lot of enthusiastic people working towards customer satisfaction.

WHAT IS NIU’S GREATEST CHALLENGE AT THIS POINT OF TIME?

One of the biggest challenges has to be the way that government policies are formulated. For instance, electric scooters have to go through road eligibility test but there is no test for petrol scooters to check their power; there are different capacity scooters to determine that but sometimes even 125cc scooter doesn’t have enough torque to tackle some of the road conditions in Nepal. Suppose we bring in a 2400-watt scooter and we go through a test and later if we bring a 3000-watt scooter, we will have to go through the same test. Of course, it’s going to be powerful but it is a hassle to keep going through the same test over an over again. Also, there isn’t clarity in the customs and people get angry that electric scooters are expensive even though it’s cheaper to import but they don’t understand cost that goes into the technology. But other than that, in terms of spare parts, we have to pay the same

amount of tax as petrol scooters.

As a company, it is really difficult to get qualified technicians. Even in engineering colleges, the students don’t get a hands-on training on Lithium ion batteries and we have to start from scratch by training every employ that we hire. Also, to top it off, the lack of consumer knowledge towards EV and it has been our biggest challenge to break the stereotype that people have had about electric scooters not having quality and enough power for our road conditions.

DOES NIU HAVE ANY PLANS ON BRINGING RECHARGING STATIONS TO NEPAL AND HOW LONG DO YOU THINK IT’LL TAKE BEFORE NIU BUILDS A NATIONWIDE RECHARGING NETWORK?

We have a charging station at Labim Mall within the next two months and we have also planned to establish at least 3 charging stations. A nationwide charging network is possible, but you don’t actually need one for the NIU as the batteries are removable and you can charge it anywhere. So basically, when we initially started out, we installed charging stations at Naxal, Maitighar, Durbar Marg and Labim Mall but people rarely used it. Now, what we are going to do is install a charging station in the parking lot of Labim and all you’ll have to do is just plug in and it’s completely free. Its all about making it convenient for the owners. And as for going nationwide, we are opening up at Pokhara and other cities as well but we are taking things slow to make sure that we give our best.

UP UNTIL NOW, HOW HAS THE CUSTOMER RESPONSE BEEN TOWARDS NIU?

It has actually been quite impressive.

Its like the more we sell, I start gaining more faith in the brand. Customers who have actually bought it, have been really satisfied with it. Kirana is one of our best customer advocates, they are a grocery delivery company and they have already bought 4 scooters from us. Customers have been really satisfied with the features our products have and that’s why they have been giving us amazing testimonials.

WILL WE SEE ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES COMING FROM NIU?

About a year ago, NIU made an electric motorcycle called Project X and the concept was showcased at EICMA. But the issue with that is it’s ridiculously expensive to maintain a quality that NIU is offering with more space to fit two people and a heavier chassis.

Motorcycles are obviously heavier than scooters and will require a bigger battery which basically means that there

will be a lot of cost tied to it. Eventually, once that is resolved, maybe the Project X will actually be able to cater to the market.

WOULD YOU SAY NIU SHARES THE SAME/SIMILAR VISION AND MISSION AS TESLA?

If I have to sum it up to words then the vision and mission statement of NIU is smart urban mobility. Our company, Eco Infinity, has more aspects of sustainability and patriotism in our vision. We aim to contribute to the economy of the Nepal. With NIU, the agenda is how can we impower individuals and make sustainability a part of everyone’s life. This is something that Tesla wants to do as well, so I believe that we do share similar visions.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR NIU AND WHAT MORE CAN WE EXPECT FROM THE BRAND?

We will definitely be bringing new products but what we are focusing on is to help train young people because the more well informed the people are, the more they will be aware of the product. We want to give opportunities to engineers to get hands on experience so they can be innovative and come up with new ideas. So, we are also starting an academy called NIU Academy where we will be offering online training and whoever joins us can expect to gain a huge array of knowledge and hands on training. We have even been trying to get associated with a few colleges as well with the same agenda.

BEING A FEMALE LEADING THIS COMPANY, WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGES AND WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING FEMALES?

The challenges that I have faced almost my whole life is to be taken seriously and whenever I enter a room I have to prove myself first before I even start talking about the industry or what I do.

Some struggles are on a personal level as well but these challenges are good too and I love taking on challenges. As for advices, I am also a part of a career fellowship and mentor young girls and I constantly tell them to look for inspiration around themselves. Most to times, girls are told to do this and that, not to talk too much or giggle too often from a very young age. The society needs to let girls out more so they can gain more exposure and only then can expect more woman in business sectors.

What I want to tell girls is that you need to work on you head and don’t focus much on how you look or what society expects from you, work on gathering more knowledge, listen to talks that inspire you and read biographies of people that you admire. The inspiration is out there, you just have to look for it.

The Flexi foot position can come in handy on the highways when you want to relax, lay back and enjoy the ride. Plus, with the length of 1880mm, the scooter offers a lot of comfortable space for both the rider and the passenger.

The first-of-its-kind, Burgman is a maxi-scooter boasting massive 14-inch wheels and comes loaded with a range of features such as 5.6 liters fuel capacity offering 53kmpl. he 13th edition of the biggest auto show in Nepal, the NADA Auto Show launched officially on September 11th, 2018 with a promising start and is set to go on till the 16th of September 2018.

This year’s Auto Show is being jointly organized by Nepal Automobile Dealers’ Association (NADA) and Global Exposition & Management Services (GEMS). The show is once again being sponsored by Servo World Class Lubricants just as the previous year.

The auto industry companies will be showcasing their products in their respective stalls in which we can expect them to be uniquely designed to suit their products, all within the exhibit at the Bhrikuti Mandap Exhibition Hall. The NADA Auto Show, as always looks to be better than previous years as this time around there will be exciting and much awaited new launches of automobiles from their respective brand distributors. Nonetheless, keeping in mind that the event means the companies participating in it will showcase the best products in their lineups we can definitely say that the NADA Auto Show has shaped up to be a memorable one.

4-wheeler & 2-wheeler companies and auto components, the show will have 3 hangers in addition to the covered hall. Unfortunately, due to the space constraint, we won’t be seeing the heavy commercial sections and banks. The 2018 NADA Auto Show has been properly designed to accommodate separate sections for two-wheelers and four wheelers. This year, the NADA Auto Show comprises an overall 71 of exhibitors consisting of importers, dealers, distributors and manufacturers that are accommodated in around 135 small and big stalls and blocks. These numbers includes 19-four wheelers brands such as Hyundai, Jeep, MG Motors, Tata Motors, Toyota, Subaru, Ford, etc. and 20 brands from the two-wheeler section like SWM, NIU, Yamaha, Honda, TVS, Bajaj and so on. The exhibitions also include stalls of spare parts, tires, lubricants, garage equipment, battery and other auto accessories.

We can see exciting new launches from Hyundai, Tata, TVS, Yamaha, JEEP, SWM, Honda, Aftek, UM Motors, Harley Davidson, Royal Enfield, and Hero MotoCorp.

But this time around, Honda Nepal has surprised us all and threw a curve ball by showcasing the CB1000R and the NM4 Vultus. Royal Enfield has never ceased to make their presence felt in the NADA Auto Show.

The classic thumper has always been a crowd favorite and Royal Enfield Nepal never misses the opportunity to grab the attention. Even this year, Royal Enfield has showcased their brand heritage quite well with products such as the Himalayan, Electra 350, Thunderbird 350, and Classic 500 Desert Storm. We could even see new launches such as the Thunderbird X and an updated Classic 350 finished in gunmetal grey with rear disc brake was sorely missed.

RUNNER

Runner had displayed their product range consisting of the Turbo, Bullet, Kite+, Royal+, Cheeta, AD 80 Deluxe and Bike RT. The stall was well accommodating to visitors.

Vespa and Aprilia have always seemed to impress us with what they have to offer at the NADA Auto Show. So, this time around, Mahindra XUV has gone through some changes to make it even more appealing than before. This refresh is more pronounced than the minor facelift it got a few years prior.

There is a great deal of things in the refreshed third generation of the XUV 500 this year, so, we take a look into what the progressions are for the 2018 model, the XUV 500 Plush.

EXTERIOR

The front end of the vehicle has experienced a modest yet a recognizable refresh. The grille still has the signature 6 slates however, they are made more distinctive with chrome studs and is bigger than what it used to be. The other change is in the front lamp, the LED DRLs return to being a single straight stripe like the original XUV but this time around, instead of being at the base of the front lamp, it’s positioned at the top. Moving to the sides, there isn’t a lot of a change here apart from the new 18-inch diamond cut alloy wheels. The back is where the most changes have occurred; gone are those long taillights which are replaced by triangular units. These do seem somewhat strange since we are so used to seeing those long taillights but it gradually blends with the look and starts to grow on you. The rooftop spoiler is more pronounced than before to give it a significantly sportier look. The XUV 500 Plush comes with a sunroof which is a nice option. The vehicle is as beefy as it used to be and has quite a strong road presence.

The Outside Rear View Mirror has puddle lamps that project the XUV 500 logo on the floor to illuminate the floor to make sure that you don’t step into a puddle or anything else while getting in or out of the vehicle.

INTERIOR

The interior has been revamped to give it more of an upmarket feel and it is quite welcoming.

The seats are wrapped in tan brown leather with quilted stitching design and look very elegant with the new design. It is as good to sit on as it looks; there is plenty of cushioning to make it comfortable while holding you in place. The driver side seat is electronically adjustable so not only does it look plush and luxurious but has these additional features that make it more practical too. The 2nd and the 3rd row seats have the same quilted design as well. The middle row seats have good leg room and headroom with all the passengers feeling comfortable. The 3rd row is also big enough for a normal sized adult and is decently comfortable. The dash board is pretty much unchanged as it has the same layout from the previous generation. The blue lounge lighting on the front is carried over to this generation which gives it a cool look. The infotainment screen has some nice features such as a tire pressure monitor and KMs to empty display.

The tire pressure monitor checks if all the four wheels are properly inflated or not. If it is then it will display ok if not then it will signal that the air pressure is not correct. The display has a nice animation to it where a XUV 500 drives into the screen to display the information; that’s a really nice touch as it shows the attention to detail that Mahindra have put into. The sunroof adds to the premium feature list with it adding airiness to the cabin with natural lights. Another premium feature is the cool box that is installed into the storage compartment under the center armrest.

PERFORMANCE

On this update, the diesel mHawk 2.2 engine has been tweaked as well. The previous engine was producing 140 HP and 330 Nm of torque and after the update the mHawk engine is producing 155 HP @ 3750 RPM and 360 Nm of torque from 1750 – 2800 RPM. The engine has a good pull in the low RPM range but once you push the RPM into the higher range, the turbo would kick in and you can feel the surge in power as the motor starts to build speed rapidly. The engine felt smooth without a lot of vibrations and the engine sound hardly made its way into the cabin. The XUV 500 is available in both the 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains, so you have the option to choose which drive train is more suitable for your driving purpose. There is no switch to turn the 4x4 system on and off; the electronics automatically turn it on when there is the need for it and at other times it’s turned off to get better fuel economy.

The 6-speed gearbox is very smooth and easy to operate as well.

HANDLING AND COMFORT

The XUV 500 has always had a monocoque chassis from the very beginning and the chassis has helped the XUV 500 to boast the handling characteristics that it has. The fast and agile movement is quite surprising considering the size of the vehicle. The fact that the chassis and the body is made out a single unit makes it lighter and more rigid. The steering is very accurate and the vehicle is fast to follow the direction. As mentioned above, the seats were really comfortable and the suspensions have been tuned to absorb the uneven surfaces with ease. The combination of these two make for a very stable and comfortable

drive. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with rollover mitigation makes sure that the vehicle doesn’t go out of track while making direction changes in higher speeds.

VERDICT

The XUV 500 is a very good option for people looking in its category with a lot of features and relatively cheaper price compared to its rivals.

The new updated XUV 500 makes an even stronger case for itself now and will definitely attract more customers. The increase in the performance shows that Mahindra is not only focused towards the aesthetics and is looking into developing the performance of their vehicles too. The XUV 500 starts from Rs. 61,80,000/- for the W5 Front Wheel Drive (FWD) to Rs. 84,95,000/- for the W11 All Wheel Drive (AWD) variant. Hello and welcome back to our 5th edition of the Riding Gears series: The Essentials for The Rider’s Sake. If you haven’t been following our previous issues of Autolife, then this is the segment where we talk about proper riding gears and why people need to invest in them for the safety that they provide. Previously, we have already discussed how owning and wearing riding gears can save you from a lot of mishaps that might occur while you are riding a motorcycle. These gears will not only protect you but they will save you from all the hassles of medical treatment as well.

Many might think of owning riding gears as an expense but these are actually a really good investment that will save you from future expenses if you happen to get in a motorcycle accident.

In the first edition of our riding gears series, we touched base on the 5 pieces of gears that we believe are essential for every rider and why they need to be investing on them. Following that, we have already covered up helmets, gloves and jackets where we got into the nitty-gritty of each one and how they save you from all the unwanted hassle of treatments. This time around, we shall be talking about riding pants and why it is an essential for the rider’s sake.

Generally, motorcycle pants are pants specialized for motorcycle riding with the purpose of protecting your lower body from all the possible injuries in the event of a crash. But sadly, these riding pants are one of most overlooked safety gears. When it comes to riding gears, we believe that it is the second most neglected piece of gear after riding boots. People tend to believe that just a pair of jeans is enough while riding but what they forget is that then jeans we normally wear are made from cotton and doesn’t provide the protection from the abrasions that occurs in a crash.

And then there are some who believe that slapping on a pair of knee protectors will keep you safe; but then again what about the rest of your legs? Having scrapped skin and bruises all over your legs is not at all a pretty sight and yes, it will hurt a lot too. So, why not just invest on a good pair of riding pants for your highspeed runs through the highways and spare yourself a few trips to the hospital. You know what

they say, prevention is better than cure, and that’s what riding gears are all about.

Think about this, your legs make up for the largest contact point that you have with your motorcycle and has a lot to do with how well you can ride as well. Be it using the rear brake or changing the gears or even balancing the motorcycle while its idling, you need your legs. Your lower body, if not properly covered, is exposed to a lot of damage during a crash or accidents, specially at high speeds; even your trusted jeans will tear off and have your lower body exposed.

And let’s face it, walking with a bruised knee is one of the most painful experience ever. So, investing on a good pair of riding pants is definitely not a bad idea. you might just be commuting every day and wearing riding pants all the time might not be practical enough for you but owning one will do more good than harm.

Just like motorcycle jackets, riding pants are composed of a combination of various materials that are thicker than the fabrics of your average day to day clothing. They are usually made up of leather or ballistic nylon that provide better abrasion resistance than normal fabrics. However, manufacturers have even made riding pants out of jeans using Kevlar panels in the key impact zones. Some manufacturers are even weaving the Kevlar directly into the cotton material, and adding armor to the impact zones. This means that you don’t have to be all suited up in leather looking like an astronaut hovering around in your motorcycle. You can still look badass with your leather jacket, motorcycle jeans, gloves, helmet and riding boots.

As mentioned earlier, these pants come with added protection in the main impact areas such as the knees and hips, which protects them during a crash. Always look for one with proper armors to keep you safe and try to find one with a CE certification. All of these will make sure that you would walk straight and being said that maybe survive a crash with minimal damage to your body.

Good riding pants are the ones that protect your thighs, knees and lower legs properly.

So, what do you need to look into if you are planning to buy yourself a brand-new pair of motorcycle pants? First of all, you need to be very careful and check if its flexible or not; you shouldn’t be compromising on comfort while looking for safety. Make sure that the pants allow you to move easily and they must be flexible around the knees and hips.

It isn’t that difficult or different from buying your normal pair of jeans and trousers. You just have to make sure that the pants fit you properly and are snug around your lower body. The pants shouldn’t be restricting any of your movement either; you should be able to move your legs around easily without any obstruction.

Next up, after you have found the perfect fit, you need to make sure that the armors are positioned properly and it shouldn’t move around excessively, that would just defeat the purpose of having the protectors in the first place. Also, make sure to find out what material are the pants made up off. The fabric used to design the pants should be abrasion resistant, making sure that the pants take the hit during a crash and not your skin.

Lastly, you need to choose your pants according to your riding needs. There will be a lot of options out in the market but you need to be able identify your needs to be purchasing one. These days pants come with a lot of additional features, pockets, vents, etc. But just look for ones that fit you properly, suits your riding style and have CE certification or approval.

MOVIE TO WATCH:

THE DARK KNIGHT You must be thinking why is “The Dark Knight” here? Well, despite the movie being a live adaptation of DC Comics’ superhero Batman, we decided to put it here because of how insanely well Batman’s Batmobile and Batcycle have been adapted in the movie. We’re talking about the Tumbler and the Batpod which serve as the Batmobile and the Batcycle, respectively. The Tumbler is a military spec vehicle which interestingly housed a booster in the rear that enables it to perform ramp-less jumps.

Then there’s the Batpod which is actually the Tumbler’s two front wheels that configure into a motorcycle. The Batpod is also another badass crime fighting machine that does as much badassery as the Tumbler. What’s cool is that both the Tumbler and the Batpod are real and performance capable machines for a prop. The Tumbler have been reported to top at 135kmph on set and the Batpod can easily climb the average stair case and go over cars.

We’re halfway through 2018 and we just found out that purple is the color of the year.

Yep, there’s even a color of the year thing going on in our modern day. So, upon this revelation, we decided that this issue’s influencing color has to be Purple. Now, purple is the color widely associated with royalty, magic, mystery, and piety. Definitely purple has long been used for royalty throughout history and coincidently the legendary musician, Prince also had a bike called the “Purple rain”.

Now, purple, for the ladies makes an excellent color for her moto gear; purple trim combined with black based racing leather suit would have any guy’s head turn but guys you can still rock a purple trim; just add it to a light blue base like that Fox motocross helmet in the picture. Fox has also gone with the same color scheme with their jerseys and it looks badass. If you want to color your machine purple then we recommend a darker shade of purple like the Dominar 400’s Midnight Plum.
