It’s been an exciting month. Hasn’t it? Of course, this is totally forgetting about that another hike in fuel prices which has been a total let-down.

The country’s only auto exhibition - NADA Auto Show - opened up in style with thousands of enthusiasts flocking in to witness the annual gala at Bhrikuti Mandap. The successful 2013 NADA Auto Show was an advantage to mainly automobile shoppers, who could easily make a choice from a variety of products under one roof. Auto Shows are great because there is nothing better than rows of the latest vehicles in town lined up for viewing in one arena. It’s a great way of learning about the latest technology in the industry and coming across the most recent wheels in town. While research on the vehicles can now be done easily online, auto shows allow people to experience the vehicles in person. It is the place where you get to pop under the hood, take a look at the boot space and check out all the bells and whistles. Representatives for almost all types of automotive brands are on site as well for consumers to ask questions or crack great deals and bargains. People thinking about purchasing a new vehicle and enthusiasts alike could be seen gathering useful information about new cars, financing options, exchange facilities and incentives, etc. For those who missed the show, here in this issue is a detailed review of the country’s biggest and only auto exhibition – NADA Auto Show.
Executive Director
Quite a handful of exciting wheels were launched and good thing is that there’s some more coming in the next few months. This month we have reviewed the Toyota Etios, Mahindra e2o and KIA Rio. Then there’s some brief information on the other latest wheels in town on our ‘Launch Pad’ section. Perhaps you might want to go through these before signing that cheque. Or there’s always our comprehensive ‘Buying Guide’ to refer to if you fancy none of the new ones and still want to look at more options. Then with the festival season approaching fast, there’s a lot more going on in the auto industry. With exciting offer and schemes announced by every automobile company in the country, there couldn’t be a better time to invest in a new set of wheels this festive season. Every automobile dealer in the country has left no stone unturned to cash-in on this festive fever. The festive season goodies on offer from auto makers range from cash discounts, bumper prizes, sure-shot gifts, accessories, finance schemes, free insurances to exchange offers. So don’t miss our feature on the best deals from the auto industry for this festive season. Also, the roads are soon bound to be deserted due to most people being holed up in their homes for celebrating the grand festival of Dashain. So there really couldn’t be a better time to plan that great road trip and head out for a thrilling drive/ride. Be it as the enthusiastic driver/rider behind the wheels or just eating, chatting and dozing off comfortably seated in the passenger seats, a road trip is always fun. Here’s hoping that most of you will find time to hit the road towards the amazing destinations scattered around the country. Happy Dashain!

KTM 390 DUKE
A
fter the phenomenal success of KTM 200 Duke, Hansraj Hulaschand & Co. Pvt. Ltd, the sole authorized distributors of KTM motorcycles in Nepal, has launched the muchanticipated KTM 390 Duke in the domestic market. The 390 Duke is the second motorcycle to be sold in the country under the KTM brand after its younger sibling, the 200 Duke. The new KTM gets a powerful 373.2cc single cylinder, 4-stroke, fuel-injected, liquid cooled engine. It has an enhanced liquid cooling system especially tailored for the Indian sub-continent road conditions. The bigger Duke is capable of producing 43 bhp of power at 9000 RPM and a peak torque of 35 Nm at 7000 rpm. The single-cylinder engine only weighs 36 kg since the transmission shafts are arranged one above another. The engine also comes with technical refinements such as NaCaSil cylinder coating and forced oil lubrication with performance-boosting casing evacuation, where the suction pump not only transfers oil, but also pressure from the crankcase, thereby reducing the running resistance of the crank drive. The four valves in the cylinder head of the 390 Duke are propelled by two overhead camshafts and cam levers just like the bigger KTM RC8.
is a compact, three-chamber silencer just like in the 200 Duke. Braking is done by the Bosch 9M ABS system which is paired with a radially-bolted, four-piston calliper, 300 mm single disc brake in front and a 230mm rear disc unit. This adds to the safety dynamics of the bike and ABS can also be switched off. The KTM 390 Duke gets a high-quality WP suspension upside-down 43 mm front forks. The lightweight, high-quality, pinjointed, die-cast aluminium swing arm is directly linked with another WP shock absorber at the rear. It helps in extreme torsional stiffness and outstanding tracking stability. The lightweight tubular orange trellis frame not only holds the bike but also maximises manoeuvrability and precisions. Similarly, a grippy 110mm Metzeler tyre is present at the front with an impressive 150 mm at the rear.
The gearbox is a six-speed transmission that shifts in a one-down five-up pattern. According to the company, the motorcycle can do a 0-100kmph under 6 seconds and a top speed of over 160kmph. The motorcycle returns an efficient mileage, thanks to a state-of-the-art injection electronics and the 11 litres fuel tank. The silencer

FIA INSTITUTE
COMES TO NEPAL REGIONAL TRAINING PROVIDERS CERTIFIED BY THE FIA ARRIVE IN NEPAL TO CONDUCT A THREE DAY WORKSHOP ON MOTORSPORTS SAFETY AND RACE MARSHALS TRAINING WORDS: AYUSH DHAUBANJAR | PHOTOS: NASA
N
Nepal Automobile Sports Association (NASA) is the only organization in the country that has been seriously committed to organizing various local motorsports events. Established with the slogan “Dedicated to Adventurous & Tourism Promoting Sports”, NASA is dedicated in the development & management of automobile related sports and promotion of internal as well as international tourism through their initiatives. At the moment, NASA is the only automobile sports related organization registered with the National Sports Council in Nepal. A more notable mention is their recent official affiliation with the federation internationale del' automobile (fia) and federation internationale de motorcyclisme (fim) since January 2012. So as to control the dangers involved in motorsport events and boost the country’s ability in organizing FIA approved motorsports competitions, NASA conducted an Officials Safety Training Programme from 6-8th September at Mirabel Resort, Dhulikhel. NASA with support from FIA had invited four FIA Institute’s Regional Training Providers from CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motor Sport Limited) to train about 60 enthusiastic participants with an introductory course on Motorsports Safety and Marshalls Training. The training team comprised of Jodi Zylstra, Phil Livingstone, Stuart King and Scott Spedding who were all highly trained and certified Regional Training Providers of the FIA Institute. The course was an eye opener for all the participants as it successfully introduced the enthusiastic lot to the vast world of motorsports.

AUTOLIFE September 2013
During the course of the training workshop, we managed to catch up with Jodi Zylstra, Project Manager – International Training Team of CAMS, to discuss more on the progress and sustainability of motorsports in the country. AL: Tell us in brief about the role of CAMS in FIA?
JZ: CAMS is an accredited Regional Training Provider authorized by the FIA. We have been certified to the FIA’s best practice framework to deliver Officials Safety Training all around the world. Our role is to go out there and help countries like Nepal and associations like NASA to create safer Marshals/Officials for promoting motorsports in Nepal. AL: Motorsports activities are one of the most dangerous in the world with a high level of risks? So what initiatives
are being taken by the FIA to establish motorsports as a safe sport?
JZ: The program we conducted here in Nepal falls under the FIA Institutes Officials Safety Training Programme. FIA affiliated countries like Nepal have the privilege to apply for some money from FIA’s Motorsports Safety Development Fund in order to conduct such trainings for creating safer Marshals. So it’s through trainings like these that FIA has been striving towards improving the motorsports knowledge of Marshals to create a safer motorsports scenario everywhere in the world. AL: What is the basic requirement for promoting and encouraging motorsports in a country like Nepal?
JZ: A good communication between the concerned mediums on every level of the system.
FOR A SUSTAINABLE MOTORSPORT ENVIRONMENT, IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE EVERYBODY ON YOUR SIDE AND PROVE THAT WHAT YOU ARE DOING IS GOOD FOR THE PEOPLE.
www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal
AL: Is it possible to boost motorsports in a country without any proper infrastructure fit for track based racing?
JZ: Absolutely, yes! Motorsports isn't just about track racing. You have a wonderful environment here that could host some real good rallies like TSD rallies, which I believe are already being done by NASA. We could also look at helping NASA in becoming more knowledgeable in some of the other type of rallies. And regarding NASA’s keen interest to set up a Karting facility in Nepal, I think that should be a great start as it is the foundation level from which all great drivers have learnt to race. AL: In which motorsports segment do you see maximum feasibility of motorsports development in Nepal?
JZ: From my understanding, Rally and Karting are your prime areas for sustainability. Rally can be conducted on public spaces, roads, through forests or can run across longer distances across the country. And a Karting facility does not require a really huge amount of space and investment as other motorsports activities. AL: From your observations, what according to you would be
the right way to move ahead in establishing Nepal as a promising motorsports destination?
JZ: You have just started. But by engaging key stakeholders, getting the people passionate and convincing the government for the support it’s easier to get there faster. For a sustainable motorsport environment, it is important to have everybody on your side and prove that what you are doing is good for the people. Sports promote discipline and especially with motorsports activities there is also better understanding on the importance of road safety. AL: In the future, how much potential do you see in Nepal in terms of the development of motorsports activities?
JZ: The stakeholders we have met here were very enthusiastic and passionate about what they have set out to do. The committee here has a very innovative concept of integrating the aspects of motor rallying with other popular adventurous mountainous activities. This is a good way to kick-start motorsports and will appear to a larger crowd with diversified interests. So there is potential in this magnificent country.
Founded in 1904, with headquarters in Paris, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) is a non-profit making governing body for motor sports worldwide. The FIA Institute is subsidiary of FIA that leads projects which encourage the rapid development of new and improved safety technologies in motorsports and raise awareness of safety and sustainability issues. The Institute receives annual grants from the FIA Foundation to fund its activities across the globe. In 2007, the FIA had launched the Motor Sport Safety Development Fund, which will distribute $60 million over five years for the benefit of motor sport across the globe.
The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport Limited (CAMS) is the National Sporting Authority for motor sport in Australia. CAMS has a highly skilled and experienced International Training Team that specialises in training and consultancy across a number of different disciplines. As an FIA Institute Regional Training Provider (RTP), CAMS has successfully trained and provided mentoring to over four thousand officials and marshals as part of its International Officials Training. www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal

The Toyota Etios is a line of four-door sedan and hatchback cars manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota in India. The Etios nameplate comes from the Greek “Ethos”, meaning spirit, character, and ideas. Considering that the sedan version was first launched in India back in 2010, the arrival of the Etios here in Nepal is sure quite a late entry, when the market here has vastly evolved with brands accelerating their activities. But, do take note that the Toyota Etios launched in Nepal is the latest version launched in India in early 2013 with enhanced interiors and exteriors. So will this succeed in taking the game forward for Toyota in the budget segment? EXTERIORS The Etios has a distinctive chrome grille with a smile line and sculpted surfaces that enhance the road presence of the car. At the rear, a rounded end and three dimensional combination lamps add to the pleasant looks of the car. The only variant available here in Nepal features 12-spoke 15 inch alloy wheels, body coloured outside rearview mirrors with integrated side indicators and door handles. Unlike most sedans in the entry level segment, the Etios is a car that has been designed on a sedan platform and isn’t a hatch with a boot. On the styling front, Toyota could have made more efforts with the overall design of the car. There is little in the car to evoke a second glance. The Toyota Etios looks a bit outdated in the present scenario and comes across as a conservative entry level sedan. Nevertheless, the Toyota Etios is one of those cars that grow on you the more time you spend with it. INTERIORS The interior of the Toyota Etios sedan is probably the best thing about the car. Toyota has managed to keep the interiors of the car simple and elegant. The stylish instrument panel has been given a cool icy blue backlighting and is placed in the centre of the dashboard. There is a 2 DIN music system with Bluetooth, MP3, FM, Aux-in and USB www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal

compatibility and the unit can be controlled via a remote and the 3-spoke audio control integrated steering wheel. The steering feels meaty in hand and the controls are well positioned. Toyota Etios features a newly developed Air Conditioning system with powerful and multi-directional vents that ensure superior cooling inside the cabin. The car also features a class-first ‘clean air filter’ which is standard across all grades for purified air in the cabin. It’s the cabin that has received most of the attention. There’s a good looking dual-tone black and beige colour scheme and the faux wood inserts give it a bit of flair. The seats are ergonomically designed with integrated headrests and there is a driver’s seat height adjust option available for getting comfortable in the Etios. The rear seat too offers good levels of comfort. The space inside the cabin is truly generous as there is ample room to stretch in the Etios. There are quite a lot of storage spaces inside the cabin, like seven one litre bottle holders, mobile holder and a spacious 13 litre glovebox which has a cooling duct from the AC to chill your drinks. The best in class boot space of 595 litres is generous enough to gobble the occasional family baggage with ease. PERFORMANCE A newly developed 1.5L unit which produces a modest 90 bhp of power and 132 Nm of torque powers the Etios. The Etios performs very well in the city as the responsive low revs make it easily driveable for our roads. The clutch is light and the slick shifting gear has been well spaced out to give the car a good mid-range. But it doesn’t fare well when it comes to outright acceleration and feels a bit underpowered on the highways. However buyers will have little to complain about due to its frugal nature with an ARAI certified mileage of 16.78 kmpl. The light weight of the vehicle aids in good and easy handling with the tyres offering decent grip. But the steering which is extremely light at low speeds doesn’t weight up at higher speeds for an enthusiastic

It is family-safe as well, with a full set of safety features, so you can enjoy its smooth ride with complete peace of mind on the road. Toyota Etios sedan boasts of various active and passive safety features that match with the global safety standards. The safety features included in the Etios are energy absorbing body shell, driver and passenger airbags, and ABS with EBD. VERDICT The Toyota Etios may not be the prettiest looking car around, but it is spacious, comfortable, efficient, practical and segment defining for its class. The Etios was unveiled in India to capture a major share in the entry level sedan segment and it has been a formidable competitor ever since its launch with sales exceeding 1 Lakh units. But oddly, the Etios has been launched in Nepal at a price that sets it in the mid-level sedan segment where the competitions have set a much higher benchmark. Accordingly, though the Etios should succeed in taking the game forward for Toyota, the questionable pricing could put lesser Toyotas in the driveways than expected from such a remarkable launch. Nevertheless, it still remains as the most affordable car in the elite Toyota portfolio. Pair to that Toyota’s bulletproof reliability and higher value come trade-in time, nothing really comes close to match it for value. www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal

Nepal Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) is an organization which represents and unites all the automobile dealers, associations and professionals under a single roof within the republic of Nepal. Since 1998, NADA has been organizing this one and only running auto show in the country - NADA Auto Show. The 9th edition of the NADA Auto Show was presented by Nepal Automobile Dealers’ Association, managed by GEMS and jointly sponsored by Michelin, Shikhar Insurance and
Servo Lubricants. Tickets were priced at Rs.150 for general visitors and Rs.100 for student. The NADA Auto Show ran from 11-16th September, 2013. The show was inaugurated by the newly appointed President of NADA, Mr. Shekhar Golchha along with the Finance Minister of Nepal Hon. Mr. Shanker Prasad Koirala, who appreciated the initiative of the association to uplift the overall automobile sector by organizing such events. Koirala further assured that the government would review the high customs duty on automobiles after studying duty imposed by other neighbouring countries and admitted that the government has failed to create favourable environment
for the growth of automobile sector. Speaking at the program, NADA President Shekhar Golchha highlighted exorbitant tax rates, high
fuel price, unscientific process of fixing prices of spare parts at customs offices, and problems created through open border as the major problems facing the country´s automobile sector. The NADA Auto Show showcased a wide range of the latest automobiles along with auto equipments, accessories, lubricants, financing and insurance services from major brands in the domestic market. The show had differentiated sections for two-wheelers and four-wheelers from various countries like China, Germany, USA, Czech Republic, Malaysia, Italy, Taiwan, Japan and India.
This year, the theme of the event was ‘Day out for the Family’ and hence also focused on family friendly recreational activities, foods exclusively from Nanglo, friendly mascots,
clean bathrooms and other attractions. To attract more visitors, the organisers also offered a Samsung Galaxy S Duos Smartphone each day as a door prize. Other highlights included a talk show on vehicles business, quiz contests, road safety information, a live corner and information on traffic rules. 24-hours security guards were deployed within the exhibition premises and the exhibition was insured to safely come across any unseen/accidental disorder during the exhibition. Keeping in mind the festive Dashain season ahead, most of the companies had announced festive offers through which customers buying cars or bikes could get attractive cash discounts and gifts through lucky draw or scratch coupons. Targeting potential buyers, commercial banks were also providing attractive financing schemes, including a subsidised interest rate during the NADA Auto Show. The exhibition did well to incite the festive mood among the visitors and potential customers by bringing in almost all the available brands in Nepal under a single roof. Apart from that, this year’s show unveiled many brand new vehicles and showcased other vehicle models and automotive services available in the market. The show featured nearly 100 vehicles from about 25 automobile companies around the world. The event saw a visitor footfall of about 40,000 people and bookings/transactions worth nearly NRs. 1.2 Billion were reported. Around 1000 units of two-wheelers and about 450 units of four-wheelers were stated to be sold during this 6-day expo. This year's show shaped up to be the best in the show's history.
Shekhar Golchha President Nepal Automobile Dealers’ Association “This is the apex stage for all the automobile dealers and I am happy to say that 90% of all the traders and importers of vehicles were present this year. The auto show gave the visitors a great overall picture of the auto industry and they had access to almost everything that the automobile industry of Nepal has to offer. People could compare and contrast products, enjoy the various schemes and had personal contact with the dealers as well. The biggest change from last year has to be the increased number of participants and the other difference is our efforts to promote the event as a family event.”

BAJAJ: Bajaj marked their presence in the show by limiting the display of their vast range of motorcycles only to the flagship Pulsar brand. No doubt, the Pulsar 220 and Pulsar 200NS were the show stealers in this Pulsar Mania. Interestingly, there was also a huge air blown mascot of Bajaj fluttering beside the proportionately well designed pavilion.
CHEVROLET/SUBARU: Vijay Motors Pvt. Ltd showcased their Chevrolet and Subaru brand in the same pavilion. It was the usual affair in the opening day with the Chevrolet Optra Magnum, Chevrolet Beat and Subaru Forester put up on display. However, a surprise was in order with the launch of the fantastic Subaru XV crossover at NRs.91,00,000/- later on in the event.
DAIHATSU: Daihatsu had just one product in their stall. The tried and tested Terios marked Daihatsu’s presence at the show.
DEMAK: Demak had the DTM 150 and Combat on display. DUCATI: Ducati had one of the smallest stalls in the expo. But that definitely didn’t stop the crowd from flocking over to their exhibit area where the most exotic motorcycles available in the world were parked. It was a great opportunity for visitors to see the monstrous Diavel, sporty 1198 and the new Hypermotard 821 up close and personal. Ducati has totally revised the Hypermotard for 2013, offering the bike in three versions - Hypermotard, Hypermotard SP and Hyperstrada. www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal

The Storme Cafe had many enthusiastic visitors storming into the outlet for a refreshing drink or snacks. The Cafe not just entertained the visitors of the show, but provided necessary information regarding products of the company as well. Alongside the Cafe was the Safari Storme, Vista D90, Manza and the newly launched Indica V2 in their exhibit area. With its typical off roader style and sturdy looks, the Safari Storme was a favourite for many along with the sporty Vista D90. They also had an outdoor pavilion for their commercial vehicles Tata Xenon and Tata Ace. The new Santa Fe is the latest model to receive Hyundai’s 'fluidic sculpture' styling. Hyundai added more excitement to their arena with the addition of the sporty Veloster the second day onwards. The Veloster is one of the latest models to join the Hyundai line-up. This sports coupe is a fresh entry to the nearly non-existent sports cars segment in Nepal.
KIA: KIA had on display the Soul and Sportage along with the newly launched Rio and Picanto. The new Sorento would have been exciting to witness at their exhibit area.
KTM: KTM Motorcycles launched the much awaited KTM Duke 390 and had its younger sibling KTM Duke 200 alongside. With the combination of the 390cc engine on nearly the same chassis and the crazy power-to-weight ratio, this Duke should be madly phenomenal.

We had set very high expectations, and in spite of the challenges, we still managed to pull it off and turn the show to a grand success for us. Though the event was mainly about showcasing and showing off our vehicles, we managed to take bookings for over 100 units. Honestly, the previous generation Reva wasn’t really what you would have called a good looking car. Yes, in terms of technology, it was a step in the right direction. But with its tiny proportions, having a full-grown adult drive it around used to look a bit like that circus act where a bear is made to drive a toy bicycle. But things have now changed, quite a lot! Not just with the car, but with their manufacturing plant as well. They have shifted manufacturing operations to a new state-of-art manufacturing plant in Bangalore. Now this isn’t your any ordinary manufacturing plant with dark smokes continuously fuming out of its massive chimneys. Developed in accordance with the standards set by The Indian Green Building Council, this ultra-low carbon assembly plant is the first automobile unit in India to be certified PLATINUM - which is the highest rating for a green plant. Interestingly, with their 'Born Green' operating philosophy, every new car rolled out from the plant gets its first charge from the solar energy. Things definitely couldn’t have got greener than this! The new Mahindra e2o (pronounced ‘E to O’) then is a fine successor to the Reva.
www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal
EXTERIORS A notable mention here is that the e2o has grown beyond the toy-like dimensions and is a lot bigger and better than the Reva-i that it replaces. The front now has stylish halogen projector headlamps and at the rear there are wraparound block styled LED tail-lamps. There is a large front grille which adds character to the e2o. The colour contrasting black roof gives a sporty flair and the rear gets an undercut in the middle, right below the tail-lamps. The improved design is backed up with some lovely innovations like ABS body panels. Unlike metallic panels, these aren't painted and are the colour of the car through and through. They not only minimize the chances of scratches building up, but are dent resistant as well, which we thoroughly tested with a handful of punches and kicks to the door panels. The fit and finish is decent, but you will find some uneven panel gaps. Overall, the e2o succeeds in getting you the right kind of attention on the streets.
A NOTABLE MENTION HERE IS THAT THE E2O HAS GROWN BEYOND THE TOYLIKE DIMENSIONS AND IS A LOT BIGGER AND BETTER THAN THE REVA-i THAT IT REPLACES. AUTOLIFE September 2013 53
INTERIORS The e2o now boasts of a more spacious cabin. The base variant too has been given the same level equipment and features as the top model we tested, except for the 6.2 inch touchscreen multimedia infotainment unit and the reverse camera that comes connected to it. Multimedia inputs include DVD playback, GPS Navigation, Bluetooth and two Micro-SD slots for media & GPS data. There is a futuristic and functional blue-backlit instrument cluster with white texts behind the chunky steering. The most useful feature here is seeing the current state of charge and range, charging status and the cabin & ambient temperature. And for the tech savvy, there’s a mobile app as well which allows you to remotely lock/unlock your car, start/stop the AC, plan your trip and keeps you updated with the vehicles’ performance and condition. Get seated in the cabin and there’s no issue regarding the legroom and headroom even for taller drivers. The front seats are highperched as the battery pack is located below them. But they have a chair like seating position, which can get tiring over prolonged hours in the seat. Window switches too have been oddly located behind the gearshift. Being a 2-door, you have to flip the front seats forward to access the rear. Once seated at the rear, it's surprisingly comfortable and there is sufficient space. Two adults can sit back here quite comfortably, but the fact that the rear windows do not wind down could add to the claustrophobic feeling. The boot though is not as spacious. PERFORMANCE The refined e2o is now set in motion by an updated machinery. The e2o is powered by a 25.5 bhp electric motor. But there's no reason to be disappointed by the low figures on paper, because the 53 nm of torque is available right from 0 rpm unlike in internal combustion engines where power/torque only builds up as the revs climb. With the press of the start/stop button you can only turn on the A/C and other accessories. But to drive the car ahead, the keyless system oddly requires you to authenticate by holding the remote near the button. Interestingly, there is now a conventional looking automatic gearshift lever unlike the rotary knob in the previous Reva. However once you slot into Drive and lift your foot off the brake, it gets moving only after some accelerator input. So for the nervous drivers, there's a hill-hold function that holds the e2o in place for 1 second after you release the brake pedal, to avoid rolling back.

While driving, there's just a soft electric whine that will give you company. Then there's another electric whirring sound from the Regenerative Braking System when you slow down. What this system basically does is recharge your batteries whenever you step on the brakes or lift your foot off the accelerator. The braking capability is good, but the brakes have an unpredictable and sudden bite to them. The car's diminutive size and instant response makes darting through traffic and making U-turns on a single-lane road a breeze. But since the e2o does not have a power assisted steering, the steering does feel extremely heavy when the car is not in motion. The ride is nice and soft on bumpy roads and there's only a fair amount of body roll if you take corners quickly or change lanes suddenly. Since the electric motor and battery compartment is sealed, minor flooding and water wading too shouldn't really be an issue. But out on the highways, once you cross about 60 kmph, the progress gets slower. You then need to shift to the battery draining "B" (Boost) mode, and the e20 immediately gets going enthusiastically to get up till the electronically-restricted 80kmph speed. There is a limit to how much you can use the Boost mode though, because it gets deactivated to save charge once the battery level drops below 20%. So how far will the e2o go on one full charge? Mahindra claims 100 kms under test conditions after a full charge that reportedly takes 5 hours to complete from a standard 220V socket. But during
THE CAR’S DIMINUTIVE SIZE AND INSTANT RESPONSE MAKES DARTING THROUGH TRAFFIC AND MAKING U-TURNS ON A SINGLE-LANE ROAD A BREEZE.

the duration of our drive, the range we got was just around 60 kms. However, this output was due the constant use of the music system, airconditioning unit, enthusiastic driving and the occasional use of the Boost mode. So we think, it should be possible to get quite close to the claimed 100 kms per charge if you drive sparingly like a miser. Interestingly, if you ever run out of charge in the middle of nowhere, there is a smart feature in the car called 'REVive', which lets you unlock a hidden reserve charge from the battery that can get you going for another 8-10km. REVive can be activated only after the battery level goes below 10% and in 3
ways - via the entertainment screen, mobile app or by a phone-call to Mahindra. On the safety front, the e2o does not offer airbags or ABS. It only has 3-crumple zones, front seatbelts with a pre-tensioner function, 3-point ALR seatbelts which enable the use of a child seat at the rear. Then there’s the host of a bit more expensive advanced technologies like ‘Sun2Car’, ‘Quick2Charge’ and ‘Car2Home’ that’s a part of the e20. ‘Quick2Charge’ allows a car to be charged in 15 minutes to run 25 kms, ‘Sun2Car’ is a personal solar-charging unit for the car and ‘Car 2 Home’ makes it
possible to use energy from the car to power a house. The standard warranty on the e2o is 3 years / 36000 kms and the batteries come with a warranty of 3 years / 60000 kms. Mahindra will also keep a close on your vehicle through their integrated mobile app which relay the progress and state of the car to the company headquarters in India. VERDICT The Mahindra e2o is a bit underpowered and low on range if you love heading out to the highways. But it is an innovative idea that makes for a great city car and has what it takes to get the job done. However, because of the steep price point, it's still not convincing enough to embrace the idea. For sure, the higher cost is going to be negated to some degree by the extremely low running costs, but it's still not at that point where it makes undeniable financial sense. So it isn’t the car that’s at fault here. For Electric Vehicles to penetrate into the mainstream and be truly successful, it will need support from the government like complete reduction of custom duties and subsidies for implementation of a good network of quick charging stations with uninterrupted electric supply. Till then, it still remains as that great car you buy only if you can afford the idea of owning and driving an electric vehicle and want to save the world quietly.

TATA SAFARI
STORME OWNERS REVIEW
WE TALK TO THREE OWNERS OF THE TATA SAFARI STORME FOR THEIR REVIEW ON THIS NEW SUV FROM TATA
Sanjeev Chettri Trek Leader I had actually bought the Tata Safari Storme as a birthday present for myself. The SUV appealed to me as it’s not only good looking and capable, but is a great value for money product when compared with other vehicle in its segment. My work often includes long distance travels and the Storme’s performance definitely speaks volumes on the highway. Moreover, as my family too loves to travel, the Storme never disappoints as our getaway vehicle. Overall, I am impressed with the Tata Safari Storme.

AUTOLIFE September 2013
Things have certainly got better with the new Safari Storme and it comes across as a quantum leap ahead of the previous Safari. The Safari Storme uses an updated version of the Dicor motor, which Tata now calls VariCOR, because of the use of a variable geometry turbocharger. This 2.2-litre common-rail motor delivers 138 bhp of power and 320 nm of torque, which is same as the old Safari, but has been tweaked to offer quicker response. Sure it's a bit low on features and may not be right there with more notorious
off-roaders, but is a capable driver on and off the road that will easily keep on their tail. On top of that, compared to the competition, it’s available at a price to beat. It has undergone some significant changes to make it look fresh, is better built, more refined and rides really well, especially over bumps and broken roads without breaking a sweat. Here’s what the recent owners of this burly and majestic SUV have to say on their latest purchase.
Narayan Malla Managing Director Manjushree Overseas Services Pvt. Ltd I bought this SUV because of its massive looks. In my opinion, the Storme looks like a beast and is perfect for our roads. Also, since I own a manpower company, we have guests coming in frequently and the Storme easily serves the purpose of ferrying them around as it’s huge and spacious. Though I bought the Storme only recently, I can vouch for it being been comfortable and great as it offers a pleasurable driving experience.
Ambika Raj Ghimire Proprietor Himchuli Guest House Previously, I had with me the older Safari and the vehicle’s overall performance, exterior and interior was just satisfactory. So, I had been searching for an alternative and when Tata launched the Safari Storme, I immediately went for the upgrade as it’s now one of the best SUV’s out there in the market with its premium features. I especially liked the new placement of the spare tire under the vehicle, how the vehicle handles better and the low turning radius. Nevertheless, only time will tell how strong and rugged the new Safari Storme is.

BOOK REVIEWS
From 1964 to 1966, Carlos Caggiani travelled to 26 countries on a 1947 Indian Chief motorcycle with hardly a penny to his name. At 24 years of age, he embarked on the adventure of a lifetime. He spent time with everyone from poor natives in the Andes Mountains, to rich families in the United States. He crossed rivers without bridges, suffered famine, intense heat and cold, guided his motorcycle through rain and snow storms, rode on dirt and cobblestone roads, was chased by the FBI, was shot at in Bolivia during a revolutionary war, and had a serious accident due to a mechanical failure in Panama that left him hospitalized for 17 days. The experiences in this book demonstrate a human being’s tenacity and triumph in the face of adversity, and shows that anything is possible.
Poring over a map of the world at home one quiet Saturday afternoon, Ewan McGregor, acclaimed actor and self-confessed bike nut, noticed that it was possible to ride all the way round the world, with just one short hop across the Bering Strait from Russia to Alaska. So he picked up the phone and called his fellow actor-slash-biker friend Charley Boorman and told him it was time to hit the road. Long Way Round is a series of journal entries written separately by the pair and recounts an adventure with some interesting characters along the way. Long Way Round is the result of their four-month, 20,000-mile joyride.
When the Black Stig from Top Gear disappeared off the end of an aircraft carrier in 2003, we were introduced to The White Stig. Faster. Stranger. Harder to keep clean. And ever since, millions wondered – who was The Man in the White Suit? This is where you find out. In this book, Ben Collins gets his kit off and reveals how he came to be ‘The Stig’ - Top Gear’s iconic RENEGADE COMMANDO driver and so much more. Ben Collins caught the car the bug young, RENEGADE COMMANDO his dad’s boss in the balls for not giving him a company Jag. This was the attitude that eventually led him to spend seven years sharing a cabin with Jeremy Clarkson’s underwear, James May’s PhD thesis and Richard Hammond’s hairspray. adrenaline filled rides reads The Paris-Dakar Rally is without question the most arduous and notorious off-road motorsports event on the planet. Since its inception in 1979, it has attracted more than 3,000 adventurers from all walks of life. The Dakar Rally is considered to be one of the world’s top five adventures, in the same league as climbing Mt. Everest. Tales of danger, blinding sandstorms, endless vistas of towering dunes, incredible hardship, perseverance, tenacity, ingenuity, triumph, and tragedy have greatly contributed to the aura and mystique of the rally. In To Dakar and Back, Hacking – in collaboration with motorsport journalist Wil De Clercq – recounts the three weeks of blood, sweat, and tears that took him on a 10,000 kilometer journey – in the heat of competition – from the glitzy streets of Paris, through the hinterland of North Western Africa, to the triumph of self-realization.

P
Peter Schreyer is a name that most of you have probably never heard of. Guess who? All right, before you begin to Google on your not-so-smart phone, let me give it to you. Peter Schreyer is a German automobile designer widely known for his design contributions to the automotive industry and one of the most publicised car designers in the world. He has worked on brilliant cars like the Audi A3, Audi A4, Audi A6, Volkswagen Beetle, Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Concept R and most notably – Audi TT. Now talking about brilliance, isn’t the new KIA Rio a spectacular looking car in Nepal? They say the latest Kia Rio sedan is an evolution of its boring predecessor. But we think otherwise. It is a revolution!
EXTERIORS Usually most great-looking hatchbacks have gone wrong with the addition of a sedan boot to a hatch. But this is not the case with the new Kia Rio. Kia has managed to morph their hatchback into a stylish and sporty sedan. There is a smooth and flattened curve which runs from the nose of the vehicle to the tip of its tail to give an athletic and aerodynamic look. Up front is Kia’s distinctive ‘Tiger Nose’ grille and busty headlights. Add to that the 15inch alloy wheels on the top variant and you have a fantastic looking car. It would not be wrong to say that the KIA Rio is currently one of the best looking cars in the mid-level sedan segment here with its strong and distinctive appeal.
has made great progress compared to the older generation Rio. It stands tall when it comes to the interiors of its class segment. The long dashboard looks classy with the executive class sedan-like styling and the row of toggle switches beneath the wellsized climate controls gives you a cockpit like feeling. It’s very easy to get comfortable in the Rio’s as the cabin is spacious and ergonomically sound. Pleasingly, the driver’s seat adjusts for height and with the widely adjustable steering wheel it’s easy to find a comfortable driving position. Rear accommodation too is as good.
INTERIORS The interior is another area where KIA
IT WOULD NOT BE WRONG TO SAY THAT THE KIA RIO IS CURRENTLY ONE OF THE BEST LOOKING CARS IN THE MID-LEVEL SEDAN SEGMENT HERE WITH ITS STRONG AND DISTINCTIVE APPEAL. www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal

The car includes more features than you would expect. The top of the range model includes leather seats, a glove box with cooling function, air conditioning with climate control, alloy foot pedals, Bluetooth connectivity, multi-function steering wheel, solar control, electric windows and mirrors, sunroof, a 4-speaker radio/ CD front loader with MP3/iPod/USB connection, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, sliding console armrest, LED daytime running lights, auto-cruise control and an automatic de-fogging function for the ventilation system. Even the base variant we test drove was quite well packed. On the storage side, there is a 389 litre boot which makes enough sense as a runabout for small families and with the 60/40 folding rear seats creating a flat floor, packing space becomes even bigger. SAFETY The Rio has a number of safety features under its belt. It is fortified with an all-new body shell created using a higher percentage of ultra high-strength steel. Passive safety protections include a six airbag system comprising two front airbags, two curtain airbags and two side airbags. Likewise, the car is equipped with Back Warning System, Auto Defog System, Electronic Brake Distribution and Anti-Brake System. PERFORMANCE Beneath the hood lies a 1.4 litre power plant, generating maximum power of 105 bhp @ 6300rpm and a maximum torque of 135 Nm @ 4200rpm mated to a six speed manual transmission. Once you take off, it is surprising to discover the high level of

refinement in the engine and the low noise level that intrudes the cabin. The performance is smooth and the Rio gets going quite gently with the smooth clutch and gearbox action. The engine though could have been a bit more responsive for an enthusiastic experience as the car does not get easily provoked at immediate

acceleration inputs. And the steering is light, perhaps too light. The suspensions however seldom disappoints as it absorbs all the road bumps with ease, and they have been tuned to handle corners well with minimum body roll as well. Overall, the Rio is a very easy drive and there is premium aura to the whole experience.
THE CAR INCLUDES MORE FEATURES THAN YOU WOULD EXPECT. EVEN THE BASE VARIANT WE TEST DROVE WAS QUITE WELL PACKED.
AUTOLIFE September 2013 69
VERDICT The KIA Rio sedan is the perfect mix of elegance and sportiness. This is a car that is bound to provide serious competition in the segment. The amazing features and impressions that come packed with this car totally justifies its increased price range and it is still competitively priced compared to leaders in the segment. We are not quite sure about the hatchback model though, since it is extremely overpriced for its segment. In fact, it is one of the most expensive regular hatchbacks in the country. Anyways, the KIA Rio sedan is truly one of the finest upgrades we have seen on any car in the country. No wonder Kia Motors is now one of the world’s fastestgrowing car-makers in the world. So you must be wondering, why then all that fuss about Peter Schreyer in the beginning of this article? Mr. Schreyer is now one of the three Presidents and the Chief Design Officer at KIA Motors. It’s his prized presence at the Korean manufacturer which has been highly instrumental in bring out output like these in the new generation of KIA vehicles, with the new iconic ‘Tiger Nose’ grille now creating a recognizable face for this nondescript marquee.
THE RIO IS A VERY EASY DRIVE AND THERE IS PREMIUM AURA TO THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE.

THREE RIDERS FROM SINGLE TRACK TEAM AND ACE CYCLIST AJAY PANDIT WILL BE HEADING OUT TO MALAYSIA TO COMPETE AND REPRESENT NEPAL IN ONE OF THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS CYCLING RACES IN ASIA Langkawi International Mountain Bike Challenge (LIMBC) is Asia’s most promising and exciting mountain bike stage race in the world. LIMBC attracts every level of rider male and female, from the young and not so young to the world’s best UCI MTB World Cup regulars or an enthusiastic ‘Weekend Warrior’ looking for the best in experience and adventure. LIMBC is a
world-class Mountain Bike (MTB) race event recognized as a Class 2 (XC2) by the world cycling governing body Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) for its quality standards of race tracks. LIMBC 2013 features six stages around the island of few extra challenges, changes and more technical tracks in addition to the excitement in the sun adventure for riders. The events will be held from 28 September until 5 October 2013 with the race starting on 30 September. Representing the Nepal National Team in the LIMBC is the crew from Single
Track Team and Ajay Pandit. The Nepalese participants comprising Aayman Tamang, Ajay Pandit, Narayan Gopal and Roan Tamang will be flying to Langkawai on 26th September along with Single Track Team mechanic Santosh Rai and a team manager assigned by the Nepal Cycling Association. The young lads from Single Track Team had been training everyday fuelled with the passion to reach higher grounds. The riders were on a fixed training program which includes interval, endurance, race, speed and recovery sessions. Similarly, Ajay had been extensively training in the UK for the last six months. But things haven’t been really been easy for these passionate riders, especially from the Single Track Team. The total cost incurred to get the team to race sums up to about $20,000/- including the airfares, registration, equipments and training expenses of over nine months. It’s certainly not the lack of talent that is holding Nepalese riders like these back on an international level, as they are some of the most technically skilled riders out there. What’s lacking is enough government support, local funding and sponsorship to take them to the next level. Only with the right support, it’s possible for these top quality riders to compete frequently on an international level. Luckily, the Single Track Team riders’ managed to get sponsored for all expenses with the help of Himalayan Single Track, Nepali Tea Traders, Smart
Paani, Ton Evers and Genting G Rupetto. Ajay Pandit is sponsored by the Ravenswell Foundation from the UK. The riders will also participate in a UCI Mountain Bike Marathon qualifying race held separately from the LIMBC Race. That UCI sanctioned World Cup qualifier will be held on 28 September and this race will allow the riders to gain direct entry to 2014 World Cup XCM, if they finish in the top twenty. The World Cup XCM is a cross country marathon race over 80kms with up to 4000m of climbing. The World Cup entry is granted based on a points system which is also used to qualify riders for Olympic Games selection. Riders must gain points by participating in XCO (Cross Country Olympic) UCI
sanctioned races over a four year period if they are to go the Olympic Games. We wish our boys all the best in setting new benchmarks for Nepal and hope the government makes more investment in this sport which holds a great potential in Nepal.

It doesn’t have the most debuts or the biggest attendance, but year after year it always manages to draw plenty of interest from nearly every major auto manufacturer. Without a home country to dominate the proceedings, there’s guaranteed to be an interesting mix of both production and concept vehicles from every corner of the world.
Japan is among the leaders of the global auto industry and the Tokyo Motor Show promises to showcase the best of what that country has to offer. From four wheelers to motorcycles, green cars to super cars, technology to design, Tokyo Motor Show normally sees more concept cars than actual production car introductions. The Tokyo Motor Show is a biennial auto show held in November-December at Japan.
sema — short for Specialty Equipment Marketing Association — is the biggest aftermarket auto event in the world, held in Las Vegas around November. However, this is an industry only show and is not open to the general public. The show fills multiple convention halls and shows off everything from high-performance OEM specials to custom wheels and graphics from local shops.
The Frankfurt Auto Show, also known as the IAA (Internationale AutomobilAusstellung), is the world’s largest motor show. It is held biennially in Frankfurt every odd-numbered year in the month of September. It is at this show where you can find many new releases and concept cars that strive to embrace the technology and design of the future.
