Take a trip to the tropics and experience the Faces of the Rainforest like never before! After a hot breakfast buffet held in the nearby Meller-Danforth Education Center, you’ll make the short walk to the rainforest building. There, you will visit with the staff that care for the animals as you join the giant otters and their keepers behind the scenes for a training session, go below the neighboring building with operations staff as you inspect the maze of pumps and pipes that make up the exhibits life support system and explore the free flight aviary with the rest of the rainforest residents before it opens to the public! GONDOLA VILLAGE: EXPERIENCE THE FRENCH ALPS AT THE OCEAN HOUSE

In Milwaukee in 1966, three young people, Sonya, Leo, and Emelia, have their lives upended by secrets that threaten disastrous consequences. Sonya’s hard-earned science scholarship, the first ever awarded to a girl, is threatened. Newly-revealed family secrets force Emelia to reevaluate everything she thought she knew about herself and her family. Meanwhile, Leo struggles with a complex and abusive relationship with his father, a musician Leo both looks up to and hates for the control he has over Leo’s music and his life. Amidst the joy of friendship, music, and emerging sexuality, each character has a secret to keep and a secret to uncover until Sonya’s seemingly inexplicable and horrifyingly desperate act to save her future forces them all to decide what matters most, ultimately leaving readers with a secret they too are forced to keep.

Karen Lee Boren is the author of the books Secret Waltz (2022 Flexible Press), Mother Tongue (2016 New Rivers Press) and Girls in Peril (2006 Tin House Press), a Barnes and Noble Discover selection. She has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and is the winner of the 2018 Wundor Editions Fiction Prize. Among other places, her fiction and nonfiction appears in WomenArts Journal, Santa Fe Writer's Project, The Florida Review, New South, Hawaiˊi Pacific Review, BookForum, Litro, and The Best of Lonely Planet’s Travel Writing. She’s earned an M.F.A. from Wichita State University and a Ph.D. from the University of WisconsinMilwaukee. She is a professor at Rhode Island College. She lives and writes in Providence.

THE MATUNUCK COFFEE SHOP

You'll want to visit after your next winter beach walk

I first discovered this coffee shop when they were brewing up drinks in a truck in the heart of Matunuck — which has a very Malibu during the 1970’s vibe (pick up a copy of Rob Lowe’s memoir Stories I Only Tell My Friends or listen to the audio book and I think you’ll agree) — and ended up going back again and again.

Open since July 2020, this funky food truck turned indoor counter inside Matunuck Pizza and across from the Ocean Mist is known and loved by the locals for the coffee specials (including a cold brew), bagels, teas, chocolate chip muffins, and toasts topped

with things like avo, peanut butter or chickpea spread. And (woot, woot) they were even offering vegan chili last time I was there.

They also have t-shirts and trucker hats with their quirky logo that features a surfing coffee cup (an image that tbh reminds me of something out of an animated psa from ABC tv’s Saturday morning lineup circa the mid to late 1970’s).

I mean, if you’re looking to one up that person who alway seems to be checking in from “hidden gems” around the Ocean State, you definitely need either the tee or hat in your casual outfit rotation.

Furthermore, if wintertime walks on the beach are on your 2023 bucket list, you’ll want to bookmark Surfside.

It’s also the one and only place for java and a snack in the area.

There are no chain coffee shops in the vicinity and you know what?

THAT only adds to the charm of this laidback and breezy (an old friend told me that her father used to refer to it as “God’s country”) coastal enclave.

Find Surfside Coffee at 920 Matunuck Beach Road in South Kingstown. They are open daily from 7am to 4pm.
