do strong and independent woman have a hard time finding love? Q : I see articles all the time about how strong, independent, smart, “intimidating” women have the most difficult time finding love. Is this true, Arden? Please say it ain’t so! A : It ain’t so, as long as you believe it ain’t so.

they fucked me up for years. They had me convinced that the only way I could be worthy of love was to disdain it, and that strategy worked about as well as you’d think it would. Remember that no author of any book, blog, or article, and that includes me too, has more of a say over your own reality than you do.

Here’s an idea. Any article you come across that tells you how bad your dating life is doomed to be because of how awesome you are? Don’t read it.

If you believe your worth makes you “intimidating” then you’ll play small and attract men who want a woman who can be manipulated into believing she is too much or that her extraordinary nature is inconvenient. Don’t click on these piles of steaming bullshit. Don’t absorb these toxic beliefs. Don’t even do it for the whining or sense of commiseration. Even if you think you’re not reacting to it by changing yourself deliberately, you are still compromising your energy field, simply by allowing others to tell you what is impossible or difficult.

I see the kinds of articles you’re talking about all the time, and often I skim through the bullet points of all the amazing patriarchal shortcomings strong women apparently possess and think to myself, “Wow, actually any woman with all these qualities, plus a little bit of patience and a healthy dose of not taking anything personally, is bound to have an amazing dating life as soon as she realizes that her worth is an asset and not a liability.”

If you know you’re amazing, it should be easy for you to find love that appreciates you. If it isn’t, it might be because deep down part of you still believes otherwise.

When I was younger I read books like The Rules and Why Men Love Bitches, and 15
