Celldweller

Some say Celldweller is back, but mastermind Klayton insists he’s been here all along. He discusses with Auxiliary his new album End of an Empire, the chaotic art of owning your sound without self-consciously having a sound, the magic of chocolate chip pancakes and iced tea, and translating the cinema of the mind into something to be shared with the help of an art ninja.

Candydrip

Some people test the waters, but Genavieve White of Candydrip chose to jump right in. Candydrip burst onto the scene in February of 2013, hailing from Brooklyn, NY. Soon after, designer Genavieve White’s designs graced our February/March 2013 Issue cover and we have been watching closely ever since. White has a growing devoted fan base who embrace all her amazing ready-to-wear pieces from candy colored bodysuits to slime green denim jackets. White sat down with our fashion editor Tasha Farrington to talk about her newest collection, what differentiates ready-to-wear from runway lines, showing her Belladonna collection at Toronto’s FAT Arts & Fashion Week, evolving over that next stretch of the fashion learning curve, and what makes Candydrip such a successful independent fashion brand.

Runway Review As we enter into fall, the season of fashion, take a look back at some of the top alternative runway collections of 2014.

Bibian Blue

come to expect from the label’s name, Candydrip’s designs focus on the infusion of bright colored silicone and fabric into wearable art. The pieces were dreams in color, a refreshing difference from typically dark alternative designs. The bright colors and swirling textiles juxtapose scandalous cutouts and structured pieces that leave little and yet so much to the imagination. Models glided down the runway in silicone dripped mesh; fringed confections demonstrating a sense of sexuality and power. The collection could have gone a very scandalous direction. In many ways it did but something about the designs transcended any runway nudity and instead used the revealing nature of the clothes to work in harmony with the gorgeous female form. Each model appeared more like a new age dystopian kind of glamazon. Each look so cohesive that the makeup, hair, model, and garments melded together into one badass superhero (or villain). - Reem Jazar

Barcelona based fashion, corset, and bridal designer Bibian Blue has been consistently showing designs that contend with high fashion pieces while staying true to her core alternative roots. The Spanish fashion label showed fantasy inspired and artfully structured pieces in their Fall/Winter 2014/2015 Borealis collection at Valencia Fashion Week. The stunning designs would have even the most conservative fashion lover rethinking the corset, the silhouette of which was incorporated into many sophisticated looks strutting the runway. The designer played with volume, showing voluminous pocket embellishments and textural designs that leapt off the runways. The over-pieces divinely draped over the models were covetable as separates or as part of the ensemble. Headpieces with a feminine play on horns accompanied many looks and were not only refreshing but gave a sense of refinement. Each look conveyed optimal darkness partnered with optimal elegance, showing sleek strong looks that gave a sense of power and dominant femininity. Standouts of the collection included the incorporation of nature themes juxtaposed with dark neutrals and deep reds that gave the wearers an empowered dark fantasy appeal. Utilizing fetish sensibilities with a high fashion aesthetic the label managed to be unconventional without going costume. - Reem Jazar

Eolith

Toronto meets Montreal in the form of Eolith design duo Katazyna Agnieszka and Wesley Burness. The two took their designs to an ethereal, androgynous place for Toronto’s FAT Arts & Fashion Week. Showing a mix of gowns and separates for their 2014 collection, the pieces resided within an earthy palette. The aesthetic was organically elegant. Many of the pieces were airy and flowing as well as tailored. The juxtaposition gave a sense of refinement to the collection. The pieces were expertly styled which furthered the captivating power of the aesthetic. By showing so many neutral colored and gender-neutral pieces the collection manages to be both progressive and minimal. Some of the most standout pieces were their elegant maxi dresses in navy and shades of nude and their impeccable menswear inspired jackets. The designers played with a variety of textures and techniques for

Candydrip

Brooklyn based designer Genavieve White played with the concept of minimal versus extreme in her first showing at Toronto’s FAT Arts & Fashion Week. To call the 2014 collection avant garde would be an understatement. As one might 45
