Ask Arden how do you manage a relationship in which you’re growing as a person much faster than your partner?
Q : I’m a spiritual practitioner, and I ended up marrying someone who would be my client if I knew my abilities prior to meeting him. He is so interested in growing but his growth is so incredibly slow and he does it while kicking and screaming and I just don’t know that that is best for my own growth. How do you continue to evolve while allowing your partner to grow at their own pace? Is it potentially hindering or damaging to stay with someone who asks you to drag them along? Is it natural or acceptable to be struggling in our own relationship while advising others in theirs?

Start noticing what you’re grateful for in your man, and it will increase exponentially. You have to love him where he is or else it’s not love. This is your growth point right here, and you are kicking and screaming. Surprise! Growth is hard. But reroute yourself so that you’re traveling into and through this path rather than circumventing it or asking the universe for it to be different, and you will discover the real treasure. Your husband won’t want to grow if you make him feel like he’s doing it wrong. Dive in.
how can you find motivation when you’re an existential nihilist living in a trying world? Q : How do you find motivation when you’re an existential nihilist living in the worst economy in ages watching what can only be described as a real life Punch and Judy show play out that will determine the next four years of misery and dreck?
A : Here’s the classic question: if the Emperor goes to consult the Oracle before all his decisions, then why isn’t the Oracle ruling the kingdom instead? And the answer to that is that the Oracle would make a terrible emperor. She’d be channeling all day, indiscriminately spouting her downloads, flooded by spirit. Spirit shouldn’t even be trusted with driving a car, let alone leading an army into battle, which is why we ground after doing workings. It’s the Emperor, the decisive masculine, who takes her information, considers it, and parses it out in order to make the best decisions for his kingdom and protect his people. If tomorrow you became a doctor, would you be upset that your husband would be your patient? Do you expect him to go to medical school so he can be a doctor with you, while supporting you and protecting you to the best of his ability, which allows you to practice medicine? Spiritual growth is important, and empathy and connection are both important, but you remove yourself farther from your partner when you expect him to be something he isn’t. It’s great that you encourage and foster his growth but he isn’t you, and he isn’t supposed to be. Nor are you supposed to be him, and if he asked you to do his job in the relationship for a week I bet you’d do it kicking and screaming too. We aren’t any better for cultivating these gifts than a carpenter is better for knowing how to make furniture or an athlete is better for being able to finish a race or a finance guy is better for turning money into more money. We all have this potential in us; we’re all born with the same systems. It’s where we choose to focus our attention that differentiates us. I suspect your partner doesn’t have a lot of bandwidth at the end of the day to dedicate to that part of his life. You have the option of going it alone if you ever decide the time comes to leave him, but I don’t think that’s what you want. Gratitude gets sold to us as the thing we’re supposed to do to be a good person, to be holy, but in actuality gratitude is about bringing in more of what we want. AUXILIARY fall 2016

A : We do live in the worst economy in ages, and I would absolutely describe our current election process as a Punch and Judy show at best. The changeable variable in your question, and honestly the one that would create the most positive change for you, is your identification as an existential nihilist. Existential nihilism is essentially the belief that life has no meaning or value. If you believe that nothing has meaning or value, then of course it would be difficult to stay motivated! But I suspect that that’s an overly reductive view, even for yourself. Surely there have been times in your life where you have experienced great joy and meaning, maybe when you helped a person in need, surprised a friend with kindness, or even celebrated yourself and your accomplishments. What keeps us motivated is a desire to bring more joy, more peace, more happiness, more pleasure into the world, in a way that utilizes our gifts and allows us to feel a sense of belonging. Neither you nor I can stop this election process. I’m even getting to a place where I feel like our votes may not even matter (though I am still going to vote, because at the very least it can’t hurt, and to miss the chance of change for the better out of skepticism or laziness is unacceptable). But you can find joy in everyday experiences and you can help others find it too. Start small, maybe a puppy or an ice cream brings you joy today, and maybe tomorrow what will bring you joy is finding satisfaction in your art or your friendships. Think of your existential nihilism this way instead: if nothing in life has meaning, then it’s all up for grabs. We are spirited beings inhabiting strange bodies traversing a giant spinning rock orbiting through space, and we have no idea why we’re here. So do what makes you happy and try to make a few others happy while you’re at it. 36
