Ask Arden how can I deal with my desire to dominate women?
Q : Hi Arden. I’m a guy and I’ve been struggling with fantasies of dominance. I feel a lot of guilt over my desire to dominate a woman, but I know that you identify as a submissive, so maybe you could share some advice to help me feel like it’s okay? A : Yes, I can. For every guy like you out there who is feeling conflicted over his desire to dominate a woman, there is a woman out there who is feeling conflicted over her desire to be dominated. And yet, here we all are, aren’t we? It would be so tidy if our erotic personae lined up perfectly with our politics, but often it’s the opposite that’s true. Take the popularity of rape fantasies, for example. In nearly any survey of women’s sexual fantasies you can cite, rape or nonconsent will appear within the top ten. Most human beings will agree that rape, the crime, is very bad. But often it is precisely that taboo that makes us want to explore our darker impulses, or those of our partners, within the auspices of a safe and loving environment. In fact, if your fantasies are at odds with your political and ethical beliefs, that’s often just a sign that you’re a normal person.

to a man, there is nothing I wish for more than the space to serve and surrender to him. The gift of my surrender creates an unprecedented intimacy between us; when I give him full permission to use me however he pleases, he gives me the gift of letting me in to see his dark side, all the secret desires he hides from the rest of the world. There’s a safety and a satisfaction in seeing someone fully like that. When I give a lover carte blanche and he takes it, then that means there’s likely nothing unfulfilled in him that he’s keeping from me, no hidden giant that’s going to rear its ugly head and create rifts in our intimacy. Additionally, there is a need in me to surrender myself to someone who is capable of taking control and pushing me to places of ordeal and ecstasy, who can push my thresholds while also keeping me safe. And I need that person to be cool with himself, you feel me? I need him to not be ashamed of the things he’s doing to me. Because being ashamed of the things he’s doing to me ends up turning into just being ashamed of me. And let me tell you, that feeling sucks. Practice ethics, compassion, empathy; try to be a force of good in people’s lives, and don’t usurp the service of submissive women to get your own needs met while ignoring theirs. There are, of course, real dangers there, as there are with any kind of relationship. But recognize that your dark side has its match somewhere, and it’s a lot more common than you think. And only when you get right with it will you be able to share it with someone else in a way that’s healthy.
Of course it is paramount to obtain enthusiastic consent in any scenario you choose to enact, and likewise important to be proactive in seeking out partners whose interests at least somewhat align with yours. But that’s just the thing. It is precisely the work you do on yourself to come to terms with your sexual dark side that will allow you to play from it safely. It is those who feel shame around their desires who end up trying to sneak them on unsuspecting partners, or who hide them from their partners and then cheat with sex workers or casual partners in whom they are not emotionally invested, and that’s how people end up getting hurt. It isn’t your kink that’s the issue. It’s the shame around your kink that causes the problems.
how can I balance “game” with authentic relating? Q : I’m not sure how to balance “game” with authentic relating. Any ideas? A : You know the person you become when your game is on fire, and you’re doing amazing things that people around you are compelled by, and you’re in a state where everything feels natural and awesome because you’re adding value to everyone around you? Game yourself until you are that person every day. Then your game will truly be authentic.
I could simply explain it this way: I am a woman, and when I am deeply attracted 29
