Entrepreneur Fund Winners Announced for the Avalon Innovation Center

March of this year the business community started seeing unprecedented challenges as we have had to navigate going through a global pandemic. The COVID-19 Pandemic has expedited a new approach to employment and has raised questions as to what the new norm is and what it will look like in the near and distant future. Many have shifted their work environment to home, while also trying to figure out school, childcare and even how to do day-to-day shopping.

Aware of a rapid business climate change and the need to support local entrepreneurs, Avalon Park Group, led by President & CEO Beat Kahli, created a fund to support local business and foster growth in this ever-changing time. The initial fund is over $1,000,000 and is being awarded to entrepreneurs who presented a new business, spin off from another business or grow an existing small business. The fund amounts are a combination of cash investments, business loans, office space, professional consulting services and The 5th Floor memberships. “We personalized an award package for all 28 finalists,” said Kahli. “While not all of the asks were fully funded, we wanted to offer support for these passionate individuals to continue to grow their ideas and their businesses.” From 153 initial submissions to 28 finalists, the final awards are broken down as follows:

Innovator Awards (5): CompWise Services The Dirt Master JK Creative Kaboone Life Support Evolution Medical Technologies

Enterprise Awards (7): Young Innovators Technologies EVTransports Connective Human Happ for Hotels Complex Seven Industries SharkBait Spotted Cow Estate Sales Collaborator Awards (7): American Technologika SMART8 AMLY Sustainability Intern Pursuit WOMANtrepreneur Venture Out PLH3 Healthcare Solutions Connector Awards (8): Avalon Language School Marisco Creative Consulting Limitless Learning Spincast TV Fastask Fit Me In Now JRB Enterprise Group Pioneer Renewables Community Award (1): AvalonGo There was one presentation that truly stood out among the rest. Two young men, Zak Umansky and Nikolay Azhmyakov, presented an idea called AvalonGo. The proposal that they presented was simply an ask to bring this healthy amenity to the community and any revenue that was generated would go directly back to the community.

The jury was impressed with the community spirit and professional effort spent to make this ask on behalf of their community and they were immediately awarded their request above and beyond what was allotted for the fund. “I was inspired by these young men, who grew up in this community, wanting to use their entrepreneur minds to selflessly give back, so I immediately honored their request and we are working with them to get the AvalonGo bike share program running as soon as possible,” said Kahli.

The international team of experts convened over the past month to watch presentations, review business plans and make suggestions for next steps. “We are very grateful for the time and expertise the jury provided over the past several months in reviewing the multitude of business plans received,” said Beat Kahli. “Special acknowledgement should particularly go to the Singapore team, Andreas Derzsi and Ravi Kumar, who spent more than 24 hours on the clock as they watched presentations in the middle of their night, and then had to continue their days.” The 5th Floor location in Avalon Park Orlando is slated to open late fall of this year and is the ideal space for the growing entrepreneurial business to call home. About The 5th Floor: Earlier this year it was announced that The 5th Floor international pro-work space would open their flagship office

in Muttenz, Switzerland, with subsequent locations to open within a year in two Avalon Park Communities, Orlando and Wesley Chapel. Additional international locations are scheduled to come online in locations like Singapore, Sydney, Australia and Central and South America. The pro-working space is customized both in the physical space and the services provided. The concept provides not only a space for businesses to work, they provide local and regional connections that help global connectivity for businesses looking to expand internationally. The flagship 5th Floor location in Muttenz, Switzerland is located next to one of Europe’s leading bio-tech Universities, “FHNW” As a leading location for bio-technical growth, it is a natural fit for small and spin off bio-tech companies to expand. One of the most powerful resources The 5th Floor has globally is it’s relationships with the local universities. In Muttenz, FHNW provides relationships and opportunity for growth in the bio-tech industry. The same can be said with the Orlando location and its relationship with the University of Central Florida in the technology, medical and defense industries. Other 5th Floor locations will have similar relationships, that create avenues for related connections. If you are interested in learning more about The 5th Floor, please click here or contact us at Info@AvalonParkGroup.com or by calling 407-658-6565.

These days I hear from many people that we are living in the most difficult times ever. Both in the news and in conversations I am having from around the globe the COVID-19 Pandemic, social unrest and political divide are hot topics. When you are going through tough times such as these, it seems like it is the most challenging situation you have ever been through and wonder if you will make it through. Then once the challenge subsides and you have survived the crisis at hand, you can think, “We did it, we made it through.”

The Best Books to Read While Social Distancing Many seniors must continue to keep their distance this summer to avoid COVID exposure; however, they may be growing weary of excessive screen time and want to switch things up to stimulate their minds. Fortunately, a good book is the best way to escape reality from the safety and comfort of home. To help occupy their time while social distancing, here are some great book recommendations for seniors to enjoy by the pool, in the AC, or have their caretakers read aloud.

Uplifting Travel Stories

If interested in reading about how other people, both real and fictional, have been able to gain perspective and transcend while getting out and seeing the world, then consider the following recommendations. Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert – The 2006 memoir (that was adapted into a 2010 film starring Ju-

lia Roberts) follows author Gilbert’s post-divorce trip around the world. The book has inspired millions to search for their own best selves at home or abroad.

Wild by Cheryl Strayed – Wild is the real-life story of author Cheryl Strayed’s quest to hike over 1,000 miles from California to Washington by herself. Adapted into a 2014 film starring Reese Witherspoon, Strayed’s memoir reflects on everything that led to her decision and the journey itself, and why she chose to pursue this as a first-time backpacker. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho – A work of fiction, this story follows a young shepherd named Santiago whose prophetic dream leads him on an adventure through the Sahara desert to find treasures buried both within the Egyptian Pyramids, and

within his soul.

The IQ series by Joe Ide – Four novels make up this series (IQ, Righteous, Wrecked, and Hi Five) and they offer a fresh, exciting take on the detective thriller genre. The Crazy Rich Asians trilogy by Kevin Kwan – This satirical series contains three books (Crazy Rich Asians, China Rich Girlfriend, and Rich People Problems) and proves that even with all the wealth and luxury in the world, there will still be plenty of family and romance issues to deal with.

– Clocking in at slightly over 1,000 pages, David Foster Wallace’s 1996 novel requires quite a bit of effort to get into, but once you do, you’re able to feast in the delightfully entertaining world of its eccentric characters in an unconventional style. BENEFITS OF RIDING HORSES

With a raging pandemic and uncertain times, our day to day lives are becoming more hectic, unpredictable, and stressful than ever before. As families struggle to keep up with these mental, physical, and emotional stresses, it is critical that they prioritize time to focus on their wellness and mindfulness. Finding ways to stay mentally, physically, and emotionally healthy during these unprecedented times can be extremely challenging. One simple and effective way to destress from these daily demands is to enjoy the many positive benefits of horse riding. Horse Riding gives people a chance to enjoy the outdoors surrounded by our beautiful nature, while experiencing the feeling of accomplishment and motivation. This results in the release of endorphins and serotonin. Extensive research has proven that endorphins and serotonin are natural chemicals produced in our bodies and are responsible for increasing your wellness and mindfulness. This is largely due to significant technological advances in equipment, which have greatly reduced the radiation dose required to obtain images. Shielding could result in increased radiation exposure due to the shield obscuring important structures within a patient, thereby leading to the need for repeat images.

The radiologists and physicists at AdventHealth have reviewed the literature as well as the guidelines provided by multiple medical and scientific societies, including the American College of Radiology, the Imaging Gently Alliance, the Image Wisely initiative and the American We Want to Assure You Association of Physicists in MedIt’s Safe to Go to Your icine (AAPM Cares). Things We Want You to Know

In addition to your mask, jewelry and wallets are more obvious things for technologists to catch, but medical implants, devices or parts within your body can’t be detected by the eye. If you tell your imaging technologist about any questionable metal objects in your body, they can take extra steps by contacting the radiologist to give the OK, if necessary.

3We Want Your Imaging Appointment to Be Convenient

We know life is hectic. Especially now. Finding time to have a diagnostic test might feel overwhelming. Since we understand you’re busy — and that it's hard to get to multiple appointments — we’ve created a network of care that strives to make diagnostic imaging more accessible than ever. With diagnostic imaging services across your community, we’ve worked to deliver the convenience you need.

4We Want You to Get

However, it’s a very important process behind the scenes. After your scan or test, images are electronically sent to our radiologists through a very sophisticated, picture-archiving and communication system (PACS). Once the radiologists read it, the results are transcribed and sent to your physician. This usually happens within 24 to 48 hours, depending on the complexity of the images. Your doctor will then follow up with you about the results. From start to finish, your care team works very hard to deliver your imaging results as fast and efficiently as possible.

5We Want Your Care to Feel Connected

Our connected network of care means you won't have to deal with a lost referral or your imaging results not getting back to your care provider. Our imaging services are integrated into the entire AdventHealth network of all of our doctors, imaging centers, radiologists, labs, hospitals and specialists.

PERSONAL CARE AGREEMENTS and Their Importance to Medicaid Eligibility

One of the most common Medicaid asset protection strategies is a Personal Care Agreement, or a Caregiver Agreement. These are two terms that mean the same thing – an agreement between an elderly individual and someone else (usually a child) for the child to provide care to their parent in exchange for money. And while this sounds cold and heartless, the real purpose of the agreement is to transfer money from parent to child, advancing the inheritance in a way, while depleting the parent’s assets in such a manner that the parent will be immediately eligible for Medicaid.

What kind of care would the caregiver provide? Some examples of the sort of care covered under a personal care agreement are things like grocery shopping, monitoring and managing medications, tracking health, and preparing meals. Even when the person needing the care has gone into a long-term care facility, these agreements are still valid and the caregiver can still provide services, such as delivering personal items or working with in-house medical staff.

they do create an employer/employee arrangement and it is best that they include certain provisions, like any other employment agreement would. While these agreements are usually between a parent and child, they can also be created for a grandchild, aunt, uncle, nephew, or niece to provide care for an elderly family member. This relationship can also be between spouses, however, they

Because these agreements are also employee agreements, you will need to ensure that tax considerations are taken into account – the caregiver will need to pay income tax on any money received from this agreement. These agreements should also include language regarding how many hours the caregiver is expected to work and what would happen if there was an accident. sum payment to be made, instead of having to deplete assets slowly, over time. Because of the nature of these Caregiver Agreements, timing is not everything. If you establish them early, then you have more time to spend down money for Medicaid eligibility, but if you are preparing for an emergency Medicaid plan – attempting to lower assets quickly so as to qualify for Medicaid as soon as possible – these agreements are still valid and are commonly used. When done correctly, Personal Care Agreements are a strategic way to pass wealth to your heirs, protect your assets, and ensure that you can qualify for Medicaid. These agreements are a powerful tool in any asset protection arsenal.

Dementia and Memory Care in Central Florida

Caring for a loved one with a Dementia diagnosis can be challenging. North Star Senior Advisors has trained experts that are certified, dementia practitioners. We not only understand the disease process but can help you navigate your search for memory care facilities in Central Park, FL. Memory loss is a key symptom of Dementia. An early sign of the disease is usually difficulty remembering recent events or conversations. As the disease progresses, memory impairments worsen and other symptoms may begin to develop. There are also several different types of Dementia that present different behaviors, Alzheimer’s being one of the most common. Dementia Types •Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by “plaques” between the dying cells in the brain and “tangles” within the cells (both are due to protein abnormalities). The brain tissue in a person with Alzheimer’s has progressively fewer nerve cells and connections, and the total brain size shrinks.

controlled movements but also includes dementia.

Changes in personality and behavior. Brain changes that occur in Dementia or Alzheimer’s can affect moods and behaviors. Problems may include the following: •Depression •Apathy •Social withdrawal •Mood swings •Distrust in others •Irritability and aggressiveness •Changes in sleeping habits •Wandering, also known as exit-seeking •Delusions, such as believing something has been stolen •Sometimes physical aggression How do you deal with someone who has Dementia and physical aggression? Physical Aggression is defined as hitting, biting, scratching, spitting, and otherwise lashing out. Seeing these signs from a person with dementia is not uncommon if they are in the later stages. Keep in mind your loved one is not doing this on purpose, but it is very important to learn how to control them when they are having an episode.

•Dementia with Lewy bodies is a neurodegenerative condition linked to abnormal structures in the brain. There are two reasons why your loved one can turn violent: One is •Mixed dementia refers to a dIagpersonality changes; this is caused nosis of two or three types ocby the disease which makes them curring together. cure, and comfortable. Make sure the person is dry (if he or she wears adult sanitary products) and is neither hungry nor thirsty. People with Alzheimer’s forget to eat and can’t always tell you what they need. Keep to basic household routines. Ideally, sleep and meals happen in a predictable way every day. Ideally, the person with Alzheimer’s gets fresh air (weather permitting) every day and/or gets a little exercise, even if it’s just walking through the house. Keep a written log of what was happening just before violent outbursts. Try using the ABC method to understand Alzheimer’s behavior. You may soon see a pattern. If bathing tends to spark violence, for example, can you tell what seems most upsetting about it? If it’s being cold, maybe you can turn up the heat, shut the bathroom door, and run towels and a robe in the dryer before you begin. Prepare the person for triggers as best you can. Obviously, you can’t preempt every upset – if a substitute care helper shows up, you still need the help of that person even if the new face is upsetting to the person with Alzheimer’s. But while it’s not usually productive to rationalize with someone who has dementia, telling them about an upcoming change is considerate and may offer a little preparation. Keep your tone calm and upbeat – letting your own frustration show through words or body language will only make your loved one tense and more on edge.

Something else to consider if you are not able to care for your loved one on your own is seeking out a Dementia care facility, often known as a memory care community that

can help those with Dementia or other forms of it. What is Memory Care? Memory Care is a specialized assisted living facility that has trained staff to care for those with memory impairments. Typically, a person with Alzheimer’s or another type of Dementia needs help with activities of daily living, constant supervision, and a secured environment with other residents with a similar diagnosis. Memory Care communities typically have 24-hour awake staff for those residents who are up at night, specially designed units, or what some communities call neighborhoods that are easy for residents to navigate as well as specialized activities that help with cognitive abilities and oftentimes helps delay the disease progression. In Central Florida, there are many communities that range from small to large environments. In the state of Florida, there are different license types that are regulated to care for your loved one based on their level of care. If your loved one has anxiety or agitation, then maybe a large environment is too much for them and you can consider smaller licensed memory care homes with a limited number of residents. This may be a great option for those that become overwhelmed easily. Parents want to keep their kids healthy and active, but with today’s challenges and busy schedules, sometimes it may feel like it’s hard to know where to start and how to keep them safe. We don’t want them to slip into unhealthy habits and lose social connections. One way to help is by exploring a youth sports program that they enjoy. This will help them build confidence, learn new skills, make new friends, and stay healthy and active. So, they not only enjoy physical activity, but stay engaged mentally and improve their emotional well-being. Youth sports allow your child to be a part of a team environment where they learn the importance of cultivating healthy habits, make new friends, and develop valuable skills that will last a lifetime. Scoring a goal, dribbling a ball, experiencing the support of teammates, and developing skills can help boost your child’s emotional and spiritual well-being. Hurricane Season 2020: Pandemic Will Impact Outage Restoration

In the midst of a pandemic, the last thing we need to worry about is a natural disaster. But hurricane season is here – and it’s shaping up to be serious. Tropical Storm Cristobal, which made landfall 500 miles from Orlando in early June, spawned tornados that damaged property, displaced about 50 residents and caused more than 5,000 outages in our service territory. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasts an “above normal” Atlantic hurricane season, with 13 to 19 named storms. Let’s all hope NOAA’s 2020 predictions fall short, but let’s also prepare for the possibility that even one powerful hurricane striking Central Florida could be devastating – particularly if our community remains in the grasp of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the General Manager & CEO of OUC – The Reliable One, I’m urging customers in Avalon Park to prepare now for a big storm. And this year, my sense of urgency is significantly heightened. In addition to concerns about renewed panic buying in the face of an oncoming storm, I’m worried that the COVID-19 crisis could disrupt OUC’s ability to assemble the kind of work-

Wow! Another month of the Covid19 pandemic lockdown has come to an end! I feel like I’ve accomplished nothing except to move things from one closet to another. I will say that I have a lot less stuff hanging around. I hope you all are doing well and have escaped this virus! We are not planning on resuming our full meetings any time soon. It’s our opinion that it is still not safe for seniors to be in closed quarters. The negative test results are only good for the day the test was actually taken. It is not a clear indication to go out and party on! And so, we stay home. Be sure to get outside in the sun for 15 minutes a day to get the recommended dose of vitamin D. It’s safe, according to epidemiologists to open your mail(not those new crazy seeds though). You can safely pump gas, get takeout, play pickle ball, and go camping. There’s a moderate risk to: having dinner at someone’s house, attending a backyard bbq, going to the beach, shopping at a mall, swimming in a public pool, visiting an elderly relative or friend in their home.

And Another Reason to Check on Family, Friends and Neighbors there. Guidance on where to hide when the big wind blows and how to board up your windows. The Village Idiot’s preparations always begin with three important stops - the liquor store, 7-11 and bank. Alcohol has three critical uses throughout a hurricane. First, a good stiff cocktail eases any fears about what is blowing about the yard. Then when you lose power, it helps you get to bed early - there is only so much you can do without lights. Lastly, a good bottle of booze is a perfect bartering medium. Spirits always make you welcomed at hurricane parties! PS – never beer…it takes too much ice to keep cold.

Many years ago, Jimmy Buffett penned the song “Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season.” Growing up in Central Florida, the annual visitor from the tropical cyclones always added extra spice to life. As I have aged, my hurricane anxiety has morphed into anticipation of a fun couple of days… even in 2004 when I was out of power for over a month. With all the craziness of 2020

I must pause and wonder how many tropical visitors we’ll actually have this year. There are silver linings from this year’s grey clouds though. Out of concern, I have reconnected with friends with whom I had lost touch. I have also gotten to know my neighbors better. The pandemic, #BLM protests and now hurricane quarantines have all slowed life down, maybe a bit too pedestrian at times.

It is a shame that all too often family, friends and neighbors are not all the same. Sometimes your family are your friends, but not always. Maybe your friends are your neighbors, but not always. It would be great if our family and friends were the same, and they lived right next door! So how do you prepare for hurricanes? There are dozens of ‘cane prep supply lists out
