Craft Beer Because what’s on your beer label is as important as what’s in it Avery Dennison is a global leader in pressure-sensitive (PS) label materials and functional solutions. With applications and technologies integral to products in a variety of industries, we work hard to make every brand more inspiring and the world more intelligent. What does that mean for craft brewers? Labels and packaging that set your brand apart. Our PS solutions differentiate, adding across-the-board value. Whether in film, paper or shrink sleeve materials, our innovations allow brand owners, packaging designers and converters to create labels with the appearance, shape, performance and functional properties needed to tell a unique beer story. A story that speaks to consumers and stands out on the shelf.

Cans are taking off Cans are coming into their own in a big, big way, increasingly being used instead of bottles. In part, this is because cans are a more efficient packaging process, made more affordable with mobile canners and smaller scale canning lines. Amenable to PS labeling or shrink sleeves, cans offer a greater surface area than bottles for impactful branding. But which of the decorating technologies is right for today’s craft brewers? Here’s how they compare.

PS Labeling For creating look-at-me labels with eye-catching color, standout imagery, unique shapes and surprising textures, nothing compares to PS. PS labels offer shorter lead times, faster dispensing and smaller MOQs. They can be produced digitally for short runs or seasonal brews. Plus PS labeling can make it easier for smaller beer brands to compete at the shelf through special printing techniques like foil accents, metallic colors and varnishes.

PS label materials delivers the greatest variety of sizes, shapes and looks for unequalled creative freedom to enhance your beer’s story. 6

Q: What draws a consumer’s eye? A: The package and the label. In fact*: 66% of those surveyed say a beer’s package/ label design is “very” or “extremely” important for getting them to notice it

60% say it’s “very” or “extremely” important in convincing them to give it a try 71% of craft beer buyers – particularly women – like to try brands with bold/ interesting packaging *Research conducted in North America

Why you should care about packaging Packaging is all about shelf appeal, and for craft brewers it’s of critical importance. According to a recent craft beer audit# by market research firm Nielsen, 3,905 new beer items have been introduced in the past two years, and 75% of them have been craft. That means competition for consumer attention at the shelf is fierce. There are 571 beer items on the average liquor store shelf; 256 on the average food store shelf. With 70% of consumers deciding what beer to buy at the point-of-sale, your brand has got to stand out. Yet despite the array of unique pack art and branding, Nielsen finds a lack of brand personality ownership in craft beer, highlighting the importance of package design personality to drive differentiation - personality that can be best realized with PS materials.

In addition to greater design and production flexibility, pressuresensitive technology offers the following advantages compared to glue-applied:

Pressure-Sensitive Labeling

Glue-Applied Labeling

Printed Graphics

Web fed; multiple technologies in-line

Sheet fed; multiple passes may be required

Label Shape

Wide-range of label shapes and sizes

Limited; labels must fit magazine

Appearance on Bottle

Hidden edge lines with clear-on-clear film

Clear-on-clear film not widely available

Set Up

Wide temperature range for dispensing

Adhesive temperature critical for viscosity control

Changeovers

Easy changeovers; minimal adjustments

Best for long runs with same size label; expensive change parts

Production Speeds

Low- to high-speed applicators

Low- to super-high-speed applicators

Glue Clean-Up

No clean-up

Equipment wash-down; adhesive waste

Label Cost

Higher, but includes adhesive and application

Lower, but only includes label material

Why PS instead of glue-applied labels? The answer? Brilliant graphics, intricate die cuts and virtually invisible edge lines. Not to mention greater design flexibility with fewer limits on label shape and size. Compared to glueapplied labels, PS materials offer packaging designers the visual versatility and excitement they’re looking for. Plus the enhanced production efficiency of PS translates to a lower total applied cost with much less downtime.

Avery Dennison technologies can be used in multiple areas of your operation allowing you many ways to tell your story. From labels and packaging for bottles and cans, to items for tap handles, shelf talkers and promotional materials, we offer a comprehensive, one-stop collection of shrink and pressuresensitive materials that help your brand stand out, tell its story and be sold.

A high-impact label for vodka with a story to tell Mepco turns to Avery Dennison to ensure shelf appeal for a challenging label conversion Born and Bred Vodka is produced by Driggs, Idaho-based Grand Teton Distillery. It’s a lifestyle brand created through a collaboration between the distillery and actor Channing Tatum. As the story goes, Tatum discovered Grand Teton during a quest to find the best vodka in America. Born and Bred was officially launched at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival in France, far from Idaho and the potatoes from which it’s distilled. It’s been promoted largely online, with visually striking content and storytelling.

Not your typical vodka bottle Part of the uniqueness of Born and Bred is its packaging. Most traditional vodkas come in tall, slim bottles. Their labels typically feature sublime type and graphics. Born and Bred’s bottle is shorter and wider—similar to what’s expected for a brown (dark) spirit, or a gin. The label is press printed on a textured facestock, and is simply stunning. The logo’s large, bold lettering is flanked by an image of the brand’s jackalope icon (created by acclaimed illustrator Steven Noble) and the head distiller’s signature. A die-cut forms the outline of the Grand Teton range. The facestock is accentuated with gold foil highlights. “The design of the label is an expression that combines the brand’s strategic position with Channing’s personality and values,” said Marcus Bartlett, Creative Director of Los Angelesbased United Talent Agency, which developed the brand. “Born and Bred is about celebrating local legends. Small towns. Big personalities. Great stories. And in a way, that’s Channing. He’s the local guy who’s turned himself into a global star. He’s also very down to earth and authentic, someone with a bit of a mischievous personality. The jackalope is a double-sided icon. It represents that aspect of Channing—a personification of that fun-loving, adventurous spirit—as well as the history of the region, and the myths of the local culture. The label needed to be natural and authentic both to that iconography, and to Idaho itself.”

A fast-growing segment... an opportunity for converters The craft spirit segment is growing. According to the American Craft Spirits Association, as of August 2016, more than 1,315 craft distillers generated $2.4 billion in retail sales in the U.S. The segment accounts for about 3 percent of liquor sales nationally, and has expanded in volume at a combined annual growth rate of 27.9 percent between 2010 and 2015. Craft drinkers are thoughtful about the brands they choose.

A high-impact label can complement a brand’s story, grab the buyer’s attention with “shelf appeal,” and communicate authenticity.

Meeting creative and technical challenges Mepco Label Systems handled printing and production of the Born and Bred label. With clients across the country, the company offers digital and flexographic printing through facilities in Lodi, Calif. and Horn Lake, Miss. When presented with the project’s unique challenges, Mepco turned to Avery Dennison. “We went through a lot of paper options, both before and after we came to Mepco,” said Bartlett. “We were looking for something that felt a little rugged and natural, something that would evoke the values of the brand as well as hold the ink and have the right level of brightness. It’s a lot to ask of a paper, but we didn’t want the label to seem too ‘gimmicky.’ We couldn’t just ‘faux’ the personality by printing texture or tints onto a sheet of plain vellum. And, even more demanding, the label needed to be able to withstand water, knowing it would be put on ice.” “When the project came to us, we knew it would be a challenge,” said Michael Rodenborn, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Mepco. “On the surface, it’s a one color label, but the stock needed a flood coat to match the background color the client wanted and there were multiple screens needed

9

in the art. Due to the backprint, we had to switch from the HP Indigo 6800 to one of our Nilpeter FBZ 3300 presses with a turnbar and delam/relam unit. We also had to switch from flatbed emboss and hot stamp to inline rotary, due to the length of the label. When the moisture barrier came into play, we knew that we had to involve Avery Dennison on this project, which we are accustomed to doing on unique projects such as this.” Avery Dennison recommended product number 53232, Fasson® 70# Bright White Felt Wet-strength Weld / S100RB / 44#PK. The construction is in the company’s Welded Label Materials Collection, available through its Wine and Spirits Portfolio. Welded technology is engineered specifically to meet rigorous wet, cold, and damp bottling environments.

Responding to the logistical needs To help Mepco increase its efficiency and align with the client’s production and distribution needs, Avery Dennison added the label stock to its EXACT™ program in California. “We knew that in order to support this business, having EXACT and next-day delivery would be critical for Mepco’s success,” said Joyce Vagnozzi, Avery Dennison regional manager. “Working with our product management and supply chain teams, we were able to add this product and EXACT program to our local inventory in Rancho Cucamonga.” To learn more about Grand Teton Distillery and Born and Bred vodka, visit tetondistillery.com

Outstanding Graphics Add Premium Edge to Indian-made Spirits in a Cluttered Market Established just over two decades ago, SOM Distillers and Breweries works hard to differentiate its products in the highly competitive and overcrowded Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) category. Having received international recognition with the prestigious MONDE SELECTION GOLD award, its 100% grain whisky and vodka products required labels that reflected the premium quality of the spirits while relating to the youthful nature of their target drinkers. Packaging of Milestone 100 has also won the Asia Star Packaging Award 2014. Drawing on the heritage of whisky drinking, the label design for Milestone 100 Whisky emulated an antique look, printed and applied with modern technology to produce an attractive textured finish with ultra-sharp, die-cut lettering. On the other hand, White Fox Vodka’s label design communicated pure modernity and a touch of audacity with eyecatching, double-sided film printing.

Referencing Tradition While Harnessing Modern Technology Evoking the masculine heritage of whisky drinking, Milestone 100 sports a label that feels traditional yet looks modern. While the colour scheme and design evoked the past, the technology employed in the printing and the application was decidedly modern. An antique look was created with a textured matt-finish printed prime label, enhanced by extremely sharp die-cut edges for the letters of the ‘100% grain whisky’ message at the top. To achieve the desired precision, a special rotary die was imported from Germany. The sum of these small details added up to a big impact on the shelf.

Novel Double-sided Printing Amuses and Engages the Customer Seeking to connect with sophisticated young Indian drinkers, White Fox Vodka required a point of difference from the profusion of white spirit and vodka brands on the market, mostly enclosed in frosted direct-printed bottles. The SOM Marketing team, led by Govind Singh, Senior Brand Manager of SOM Distillers and Breweries, devised a double- sided printed label that accommodated two visuals on a single label. The branding details are featured on the back of the label, while an alluring winking lady is seen through the frosted window on the front of the bottle. The technical challenge of printing two images on both sides of a single label was overcome by close collaboration between SOM Distillers and Breweries’ Marketing team, its trusted converter Zircon Technologies India Ltd, and Avery Dennison. The label was printed on Fasson® Fasfilm Plus Clear AMF 0610, a 2 Mil Clear BOPP film with excellent clarity that is ideal for producing a ‘no label’ look, with a layer of white ink separating the two images. The film’s print-receptive coating and excellent press register stability resulted in a sharp image with crystal- clear resolution. This ‘extra serve’ of wit provided by the double imaging resonated well with the young target audience. Since the launch of the new packaging, White Fox Vodka enjoyed a significant jump in sales.

Serving Solutions Tailored to Brand Personalities Milestone 100 Whisky and White Fox Vodka share a common distiller, a premium positioning and youthful, cosmopolitan target markets. There the similarities end. A creative marketing team, a meticulous converter and the wide range of Avery Dennison labeling solutions at their disposal proved a winning combination for heritage-rich whisky brand and the thoroughly modern vodka brand.

“Avery Dennison enjoys a very close and cordial relationship with SOM Group, branding and packaging procurement team of SOM India. Since packaging is one of the most powerful tools to create a brand image in the minds of the consumer, it is a partnership that is instrumental in the sales and ultimate success of our products.” Govind Singh, Senior Brand Manager, SOM Distillers and Breweries

A World of Connected Products Are you ready for the future? Intelligent labels or ‘smart labels’ are labels inlaid with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, which gives every item a unique identifier. As the connective tissue in the Internet of Things, RFID tags and other intelligent labels will help make inventories more visible, consumers more informed and businesses more sustainable. According to Auburn University, RFID identification has improved inventory accuracy for apparel and footwear companies to greater than 98 percent and higher (from 65 percent). This is an advantage in the omni-channel environment, where success requires inventory accuracy of greater than 98 percent, but which, without RFID tracking, which often lie below 70 percent at the assortment level. Apparel and footwear companies have been some of the first to realize these benefits, leveraging RFID for their inventory management. Other segments will follow apparel’s lead, including beauty brand owners and retailers.

RFID enabled Labels can dramatically increase accuracy, save time and money, boost sales, and reduce waste.

12

Grocery retailers and food service distributors can gain greater visibility into the expiration dates of perishables with RFID, allowing them to sell items nearing their expiration dates sooner, and the ability to quickly recall products, ensuring customer safety throughout the food supply chain. Companies can also

index

Issue 1, 2019 eliminate manual checking of sell-bydates, reducing label costs by up to 50%, by equipping employees with RFID readers that scan hundreds of items per second. The Aviation industry has also experienced many compelling benefits from adopting RFID over the past few years following the successful implementation of RFID within Delta Airlines, Las Vegas and Newark Airports in the US. Delta Airlines currently enjoy significant advantages since switching from barcode labels to RFID-enabled labels including: ▶▶ Up to 99.6% bag tag read rate ▶▶ 10% improved baggage loading rate ▶▶ 13% reduced mishandled bag rate ▶▶ 21% reduced bag handling injury The global aviation industry group IATA has recognized these clear advantages and recently mandated the adoption of RFID in baggage tags by airports and airlines worldwide by 2020. Ultimately, as smartphones develop and intelligent-label reading devices become standard in appliances and closets, intelligent labels will move into consumers’ homes, making it easy to reorder products, get recycling information and more. Plus individuals will be able to opt into programs allowing companies to gather more detailed data on their behaviour and preferences, allowing more personalized and meaningful one-toone experiences. The cost-savings, efficiencies and improved customer experiences from implementing intelligent labels will enable their wide-scale adoption in a matter of time. Forward-looking companies can explore RFIDenabled solutions now, and prepare f.or the upcoming decade, where transformation takes place in how we connect with products, and also how the consumers’ expectations evolve. As the world’s largest UHF RFID partner, Avery Dennison is at the forefront of this transformation, developing pioneering integrated RFID solutions designed to help improve inventory management and loss prevention across the value chain, from manufacturing source to consumer.

Meet our Intelligent Label Specialists: Evelyn Ong, business development manager for Intelligent Labels, Avery Dennison, Australia, New Zealand and ASEAN; and Tirthankar Kshetrimayum, business development manager for Intelligent Labels, Avery Dennison South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, as they discuss about Intelligent Label and how brands are deploying them in Asia to grow their businesses.

RFID has been around for many years. For instance, the technology was used during World War II to identify aircraft as friend or foe. So, what makes it popular and widely adopted now? Tirthankar: Yes, RFID dates back to the 1940s. Since then, there have been improvements in the technology to enable it to achieve higher levels of accuracy. Also, price barriers have come down over time. Evelyn: Over the years there has been tremendous improvement in standard development, Integrated Circuit (IC) design, mass production equipment and technology, and proliferation of the use of smart devices.

“The efficiencies, cost-savings and improved consumer experiences that intelligent labels enable make their widescale adoption a matter of when, not if. Forward-thinking companies can explore RFID-enabled solutions now, and prepare for the coming decade, when transformations in how we all connect with products and consumers will evolve quickly, along with the expectations of consumers themselves.” Francisco Melo, Vice President and General Manager of Global RFID Avery Dennison

With Avery Dennison’s strength and commitment in material science and the push for innovations in the use of intelligent labels, we are seeing wider adoption of RFID technology in more industries and in applications never seen before. The key to wide adoption is in our ability to offer large quantities of high quality products at attractive price points for customers’ use. What are the industries that will need Intelligent Labels? Tirthankar: Presently, businesses which are currently using barcode technology will eventually shift to using RFID technology. We are working hard to offer solutions for Intelligent Labels for them. Evelyn: Intelligent Labels can be applied in so many ways across different industries. These smart labels can either solve an existing problem such as inventory mismanagement, inefficiencies in processes or existence of counterfeits, or simply work as an integral part of the business operation to provide better customer experience. At Avery Dennison, we have identified several industries in which intelligent labels offer a very compelling business case. For instance, the retail sector can use intelligent labels to efficiently manage their supply chain with timely and accurate information about their inventory, while the aviation industry can use intelligent labels to provide visibility and accurate tracking of passenger baggage globally. We believe that the food sector is another industry where intelligent labels can be used to reduce food wastage and improve food safety. In the manufacturing sector, factories in Asia can deploy intelligent label solutions to improve visibility of their value chains and drive greater efficiencies throughout the manufacturing process.

Tirthankar: All major e-commerce players in the region along with major brick and mortar brands will start using this technology. For example, Myntra the well-known fashion chain in India is using it to improve their warehouse and inventory management solution down to the last item. Additionally, they are able to provide their customers with a unique Retail 2.0 experience at their Roadster Go store which offers selfcheckout of just 30 seconds! Evelyn: Decathlon and Uniqlo are two of many of our global customers who have deployed intelligent labels worldwide. These labels can already be found in stores in this region. In time to come, we’ll share more success stories of companies and brands adopting intelligent labels. From start to finish, how much time and effort would an Intelligent Label solution implementation take? Tirthankar: This is difficult to answer as it depends on the scope, scale and complexity of the implementation. This will

15

involve a proof of concept (POC) which make take a couple of months to six months to build and test out. After which, the fully integrated rollout could take months or even one year to fulfil. Evelyn: We usually advise customers to adopt a phased approach so as to reduce the complexity and keep the implementations at a small and manageable scale for rollouts. Such phases can be broken down either by product categories or geographical regions or process flow. By breaking down into bitesize deliverables, customers will not find it overwhelming and more receptive to changes brought about by new technologies. If any brand is interested in learning more about smart labels or Intelligent Label, who should they call? We’ll be more than happy to discuss about Intelligent Labels with customers with ready information such as toolkits, case studies, videos and other materials. In Perspective: Falsified Medicines Directive Its Relevance and impact The European Union’s (EU) Falsified Medical Directive (FMD) 2011/62/EU has come into full force from 9th February 2019. The directive aims to safeguard public health by protecting the pharmaceutical supply chain from counterfeit medicines. This directive has wide ranging implications for the entire pharmaceutical supply chain; from manufacturers in multiple continents, to pharmacists dispensing medicines at point of sale within the EU. FMD applies to all saleable units of prescription medicines with certain exceptions. OTC (Over the counter) drugs are excluded from this. The main component of FMD is introduction of safety norms in all the products. The safety features consist of two elements

placed on the packaging of the medicine. These are a unique identifier (UI) and an anti-tamper device. The anti-tamper device means the safety feature allowing the verification of whether the packaging of the medicinal product has been tampered with. The CEN standard EN 16679:2014 details out various “Tamper verification features for medicinal product packaging”. This standard was created in response to the European directive 2001/83/EC, as amended by directive 2011/62/EU, commonly referred to as the FMD. One of the most widely used category of tamper verification features is application of a label to seal the packaging of medicinal products. Tampering of the sealing label or opening of the packaging shall lead to visible, irreversible damage or change of the packaging and/or of the label.

This directive has wide ranging implications for the entire pharmaceutical supply chain; from manufacturers in multiple continents, to pharmacists dispensing medicines at point of sale within the EU.

What is FMD? Drug counterfeiting is a major global problem. Patient safety is compromised by product manipulation or substitution, and manufacturers can experience damage to their brand image, sales and revenue. European Union Directive 2011/62/EU, article 54(o), is designed to prevent “falsified medicines” entering the legal supply chain and reaching patients. It applies to all prescription products (except radiopharmaceuticals) and requires outer packaging to reveal any tampering, from February 2019 onwards.

Various categories of sealing label can be: ▶▶

Fibre-tear seal By tampering/tearing off the sealing label, the fibre or the surface of the packaging is torn or ripped off and thus clearly indicates a visible, irreversible damage or change of the packaging.

▶▶

Void seal By tampering/tearing off the sealing label, a hidden pattern or text of the sealing label becomes irreversibly visible on the sealing label or tape and/or on the packaging.

▶▶

Seal made with opening strips or perforations By tampering or opening or tearing off the sealing label, the sealing label becomes irreversibly torn, broken or peeled off and indicates that the individual product container has previously been sealed.

▶▶

Seal made of fragile material By tampering or opening or tearing off the sealing label, the sealing label or tape becomes irreversibly torn or broken.

17

In order to meet these requirements as per FMD guidelines, Avery Dennison has an exclusive broad portfolio of anti-tamper and anti-counterfeiting pharmaceutical labelling solutions to help reduce the risk of packaging falsification which includes Void labels, destructible labels and box damage films. The product ranges from PET & PP based face stocks, with different types of adhesives with wide price-performance ratio as required by the market. We also have ready products with the registered design patterns & ability to offer customised designs to help pharmaceutical companies counter product tampering and counterfeiting while protecting consumers and the integrity of their brands.

R480

R100

General purpose removable adhesive for filmic facestock featuring moderate initial tack and minimal adhesion build over time. Its consistent level of adhesion and long term removability make it suitable for applications on substrates such as glass and plastics. Proven successful for shelf and tote marking used in logistical tracking.

A premium, rubber based adhesive designed for applications requiring special purpose removability. Excellent low temperature and deep freeze performance.

Factors in choosing a removable adhesive Removable adhesives are designed for various application segments and the below factors have to be taken in before choosing a RIGHT solution.

Facestock

Substrate

Internal strength or weakness of a facestock is a significant factor for ultimate removability. Higher strength ensures a greater degree of removability.

Shape, roughness and cleanliness of the surface must be known when selecting the correct adhesive. Is it flat or curved, textured or corrugated, damp or dry? Is the substrate glass, paper, textile or polymeric?

Exposure Conditions Are there any unusual environmental conditions during or after application? What is the minimum application temperature of the adhesive?

Period of Use

Label Size The greater the area of adhesive contact, the greater the force required to remove the label. With large labels, a reduced adhesive weight or an ultra-removable adhesive should be considered.

One day, 1 week, 1 month,, 1 year, etc.

Cover-up opaque range High-opacity barrier coating on paper or film hide errors, and covers outdated information on packaging, labels and containers. Typing errors, changes, omissions, updates … no matter what the mistake or need to re-label, Avery Dennison Select Solutions Cover-up portfolio can make it right without the high cost of re-packing and saving the environment. Almost every packaged product will need to have its labeling changed or adapted at some point in its life. It is crucial to ensure that any over-labelling is truly opaque. Avery Dennison opaque label stocks offer label converters and their customers an unrivalled range of options in both paper and film, and with permanent and removable adhesives. The range is a genuine one-stop shop for all correction applications, and the sheer quantity of choices available allows for highly creative solutions. Most paper or film products can be customised on demand to use a specific opaque colour - for example, an attractive coloured background on a clear bottle.

Key features ▶ Opaque prime films ▶ Opaque prime papers ▶ Opaque VI front materials ▶ A selection of standard colours and multiple opaque layers ▶ Customising colours

Frozen Foods Ready and Frozen meals are becoming more prevalent on supermarket refrigerated shelves and ready meal delivery services. Traditionally these meals are packaged in a microwavable CPET or PP tray and wrapped in a cardboard sleeve, allowing for large graphics on the front and product information on the back. However, sleeves are often not fixed to the tray and can be slipped off on shelf, posing a risk of product tampering. Sleeves are also generally manually applied, making them a costly decoration technology. Pressure Sensitive synthetic labels provide the coverage of a traditional sleeve to deliver large graphics, with the added benefit of sticking directly to the food tray, protecting the product from sleeves being removed on shelf. Card labels can also be automatically applied which improves the overall packaging cost and productivity.

Key features ▶ Excellent print quality to provide attractive on-shelf appearance ▶ Available on hotmelt, emulsion and removable

Application areas ▶ Frozen Ready meals in supermarkets or home delivery services ▶ Refrigerated meat/fish/poultry trays

As a key part of the extensive Select Solutions range, the ClearIntent portfolio has been designed to help you make a big impact on the shelf, and a smaller impact on the environment. As some of the examples here show, the portfolio covers a very wide range of potential applications. For a product to qualify for the Avery Dennison ClearIntent Portfolio, it must meet at least one of three sustainability standards: Responsibly Source: a significant amount of the product’s content is verified to come from sustainably sourced materials; Reduce: the product offers comparable or superior performance using less materials; or Recycle: the product is recyclable, made of recycled content, or enables recycling.

The need for low migration As per the European union’s 2005 guidelines around plastic packaging materials, & u.S. FDA guidelines for pharmaceutical industry: Container Closure Systems for Packaging Human Drugs and Biologics.” the “packaging components should be constructed of materials that will not leach harmful or undesirable amounts of substances to which a patient will be exposed when being treated with a drug product.” The chief way that regulatory agencies in the u.S. and Europe are encouraging pharmaceutical companies to address migration issues is by requiring that they use low-migration label materials. The term low migration is used because some amount of migration will always occur in plastic packaging. However, if the migration or interaction happens within the accepted window determined by regulatory authorities, the packaging components are deemed safe for use. There are two certifications that pharmaceutical companies can obtain to certify low-migration label materials.

ASEAN

Certifications can be secured through the independent, globally accepted testing agency, under ISEGA (As per Eu guidelines ) & 21 CFR 175.105,(uS Regulation) guidelines Typically, ISEGA certification can take up to two years to complete before the label is cleared for companies to use in production, making it a long and costly process for businesses that want to get their products to market quickly and efficiently. At the same time, this certification is necessary for pharmaceutical companies if they want to sell products with plastic containers to the European or the u.S. markets.

Small-diameter labelling Pharmaceutical containers, are small – with typical volumes of 10-150 ml and diameters of 15-50 mm. Only a label adhesive with excellent mandrel performance can ensure successful conversion and dispensing. There is growing demand for self-injection devices across the medical segment, thanks to many different benefits including better dosage security and sterility. The challenge to label converters is how to address such small diameters and low energy (e.g. PE/PP) substrates. Avery Dennison offers a sophisticated portfolio of labelling solutions designed for small-diameter pharmaceutical labelling applications. It provides outstanding tight mandrel performance, a low risk of adhesive migration, edge lift, and 12-month advance change notification*. Options include low-migration pharmaceutical adhesives S692NP and S717P. The first delivers exceptionally low migration (important as plastic use grows), while S717P minimises edge lift on low surface-energy substrates, down to 10 mm in diameter.

Key features ▶ Outstanding mandrel performance on small diameter containers ▶ Availability and change notification 12 months in advance* ▶ Compliance with FDA and European food regulations

Application areas ▶ Prescription medicines or drugs ▶ Over-the-counter (OTC) products ▶ Auto-injector pens for diabetics, autoimmune deficiencies and more ▶ Pre-filled syringes and vials ▶ Small diameter containers: 15-50 mm diameter ▶ Glass, PE and PP substrates (including treated, slip-coated or varnished) Low MOQ

Meeting the pharmaceutical compliance challenge All manufacturers of pharmaceutical packaging have to meet the challenges posed by new regulations and stronger packaging guidelines. There is growing pressure to understand rules in detail, and to make absolutely sure every package is compliant. That means rising demand from pharmaceutical companies for customised tests and individual packaging material certification. The Avery Dennison Pharma and Complete Compliance Expert Team is always on hand to give converters and pharmaceutical companies detailed information, full transparency and technical support. These are essential resources when navigating the complexities of pharmaceutical applications and making sure the end result is both successful and compliant. Label and plastic packaging solutions should comply with the following: ▶ European food regulation 1935/2004/EC, including 10/2011/Eu guidance on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food ▶ ISO 3826 - a norm that explains how to test plastics collapsible containers for human blood and blood components ▶ FDA 175.105 Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concerning indirect food additives, adhesives and components of coatings ▶ ISO 10993-5 dedicated test for vitro cytotoxicity

Drum Portfolio Durable, proven materials featuring BS 5609 Section 2 and 3 certification Seeking a reliable solution for labeling industrial drums carrying chemicals? The Avery Dennison Select Solutions™ Drum portfolio offers an impressive track record of proven performance on a broad range of containers and surfaces. Whether for painted steel or molded polyethylene drums, our film and heavyweight paper facestocks have been chosen for their ability to withstand harsh environments and outdoor exposures. In fact, all our drum portfolio facestocks have passed BS 5609 Section 2 and 3 Marine Immersion label testing, including a three-month exposure to saltwater, as part of International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG certification). Our Drum Portfolio facestocks are combined with our bestin-class adhesives to offer needed versatility. Because these labels are typically hand-applied, drum adhesives must be repositionable to amend misapplied or misaligned label applications. The adhesive must also wet-out quickly to become permanent, remaining highly durable over a drum’s long-term exposure to the elements.

Portfolio Characteristics ▶ Consistent adherence to a range of drum surfaces ▶ Strong enough to withstand ongoing outdoor exposure ▶ Weather- and temperature-resistant ▶ Impervious to contact with aggressive chemicals and saltwater ▶ Highly adaptable to varying container sizes and diameters ▶ A range of cost and performance options ▶ Materials suitable for thermal transfer and laser printing ▶ Repositionable adhesives

Easing the BS 5609 Certification Process Two certifications are important to converters who are helping clients adhere to GHS standards: BS 5609 Section 2 and 3. Section 2 certification deals with the actual label materials. Our Drum Portfolio features BS 5609 Section 2-certified facestock, liners and adhesives. Meanwhile, various combinations of printers, ribbons and inks must be certified under BS 5609 Section 3. To make this process easier for converters and end users, Avery Dennison now offers both BS 5609 Section 2 and 3 certification. Our certification library contains a multitude of certified materials, printers, ribbons and ink combinations. The portfolio matrix allows converters and end users to check various printing methods and descriptions at a glance. Our laboratory, which is certified for BS 5609: 1986 by underwriters Laboratory (uLÂŽ), helps you alleviate major bottlenecks for BS 5609 testing such as long waits and high prices. Typical testing can range from $2,000 - $4,000, and can take months to complete. But the Avery Dennison testing lab can quickly certify for Section 2 and Section 3 at no cost to you.

ASEAN

If you are already certified under Section 2, Section 3 certification can typically be achieved in under a month. But if you need both certifications, we can facilitate them concurrently, thus helping you achieve certification within two to three months.

Cable labelling Identification of every cable with a cable label Keeping track of cables in cabinets, workstations and offices is essential when installing, repairing or troubleshooting. Reliable part identification and branding depend on good printability, usually with thermal transfer printers and ribbons. Smaller diameter cables need more flexible films and higher performance adhesives. Avery Dennison materials minimize ‘butterflying’ by combining a flexible film with a high cohesion, high shear adhesive.

Key features ▶ Good printability ▶ Good resistance to ‘butterflying’ ▶ High performance adhesive and flexible facestock ▶ uL-recognised, flame retardant and uV-resistant options ▶ White, highly flexible materials for flag labels ▶ Transparent, highly flexible materials for wrap around solutions

uL 969 (‘Marking and Labelling Systems’) is the most commonly used uL standard for labels, but it applies only to labels on smooth and flat surfaces. Avery Dennison offers materials that comply in addition with the following standards: uL 817 – cord sets and power supply cords uL 2238 – cable assemblies and fittings for industrial control and signal distribution

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) are uS federal regulations. Standard FMVSS 302 relates to the burning behaviour of materials used inside road vehicles such as passenger cars, trucks, buses and agriculture machinery. Most automotive OEMs specify flammability testing based on FMVSS 302. Products meeting these specifications are available, please contact your local Avery Dennison sales representative for details.

ASEAN

The standard uL 94 is used to indicate the flammability of plastic materials used in devices and appliances. Avery Dennison offers materials complying with uL 94 VTM-0, the most stringent classification, when tested as a flag label.

Heavy Industrial Labelling™ range Applying tracking information onto raw materials such as metals, timber, stones and other building materials can be done in many ways - including the use of hanging tags and adhesive labels. Some materials can be hot at the point when they need to be labelled, while others can be rough, dusty or oily. Conventional solutions include handwriting, riveting or welding plates onto parts. The Avery Dennison Heavy Industrial Labelling range allows label converters to offer a highly effective alternative labelling solution. It ensures traceability throughout the manufacturing process. Materials for conversion into both hanging tags and adhesive labels are available, covering different temperature ranges. Labels and hanging tags applied at ambient temperatures can use cost effective solutions based on polyolefines. For peak temperatures up to +220°C, Avery Dennison offers heat stabilised polyester films. Topcoated aluminium films, featuring high abrasion and solvent resistance for thermal transfer print, can be used at temperatures up to +550°C.

Key features ▶ Productive labelling technology for raw material processors ▶ Performs in extreme conditions ▶ Barcodes can be applied very soon in the value chain ▶ Eliminates manual marking of parts, automating track-andtrace ▶ Tracks and traces inventory from initial manufacture to final delivery ▶ Helps reduce material reworking costs ▶ Complete portfolio covering a wide range of applications

Air Egress Reduce risks of bubbles for durable goods labeling Label appearance can be impacted by wrinkles and bubbles, distorting the finish and spoiling the end result. This can be a particular issue for injection-molded plastics, such as PC and ABS, commonly used in the durable goods segment. Injection molded materials can also contain volatile elements that can diffuse at elevated temperatures above 40°C and cause an ‘outgassing’ phenomenon. This phenomenon, as well as entrapped air during label application, can contribute to undesired bubble formation under the label material. The conventional way to deal with bubbles under labels is to perforate the label surface to release trapped air, but this leaves undesirable holes in labels. Another method involves repeatedly reapplying the label, however this makes it more likely an applied label will be misaligned.

The Air Egress solution Avery Dennison Air Egress technology uses a micro-embossed texture to create a nearly flawless, even finish. The textured adhesive creates a complex grid and allows trapped air to escape while the label is being applied. The result are labels that go on smoothly and stay that way, without the unsightly wrinkles and bubbles that can cause application scrap and wasteful reworking. Larger labels on injection-molded plastics are especially prone to bubbles or wrinkles. Air Egress adhesive technology enables optimum label aesthetics, whether labels are applied manually or automatically. Excellent print performance on different facestocks, together with Air Egress technology, mean that eye-catching designs can created over a larger surface area for an outstanding brand image.

Innovative adhesive technology for durable goods labelling Solving the low surface-energy labelling challenge Rubber Hybridized Acrylic adhesive portfolio featuring S8049, S8039 and S8029 adhesives Automotive and other manufacturers are increasingly using low surface energy (LSE) plastics, thanks to their performance, low weight and attractive cost. Such LSE materials offer smooth, modern finishes, and lightweight benefits automotive components such as treated metal bumpers, body trim and interior panels are often now being made with lighter LSE plastics. The durable and easy-to-clean finishes offered by these materials are also ideal for medical equipment, household appliances and a range of industrial applications. unfortunately, conventional adhesives designed to provide long-term stability do not bond easily to LSE materials. A simple way to understand this is to consider a waxed car, where water forms beads instead of spreading out across the surface. LSE plastics have a similar effect on a conventional label adhesive, making adhesive adhesion to the labelled substrate difficult. The lower the surface energy, the weaker the bond.

Strong and durable - RHA technology Today’s manufacturers need labels that not only adhere well but also withstand the harsh chemicals and high temperatures common in automotive and industrial applications. Rubber adhesives are tacky enough, but lack the necessary chemical and temperature resistance. Acrylic adhesives provide chemical and temperature resistance, but are not tacky enough. Avery Dennison offers an innovative adhesive technology to address this challenge, enabling the creation of labels that retain crucial information on products or personal safety, and which stay in place and remain legible over a product’s lifetime.

Select Solutions™

Durable solutions

Rubber hybridized acrylic (RHA) adhesive technology uses an acrylic network for high cohesion/strength, along with domains of rubber for high adhesion on challenging substrates.

Portfolio characteristics ▶ Label materials engineered for LSE - plastics and lacquers ▶ Different adhesive coatweights for various surface structures ▶ High coatweight version S8049 for rough and also for oil contaminated surfaces (often found in automotive applications) ▶ Lower coat weight S8029 for smooth surfaces (including lacquers and LSE plastics in home appliances and electronics) ▶ Available on different polyester films ▶ Fulfills requirements of automotive OEM specifications ▶ uL and C-uL recognised

Application areas ▶ Automotive industry ▶ Appliance ▶ Lawn and garden (Outdoor) ▶ Industrial segments

Fasson® S8049, S8039 and S8029 adhesives S8049 and its lower coatweight versions are proprietary RHA products, well-suited for use in applications where labels must adhere to rough and smooth LSE substrates. Compared to widely used alternatives, S8049, S8039 and S8029 - based on Avery Dennison RHA technology - are easier to convert, with higher final adhesion values and better chemical resistance.

Durable solutions

Conversion recommendations The innovative formulation of Avery Dennison RHA adhesive ensures less adhesive ooze than alternative products, but the high adhesive coat weight requires special care during die cutting in order to minimise bleed. Recommended precautions include using sharpened dies (contact your tool supplier with sample material); setting up the correct die cutting depth; using rounded corners; maintaining minimum winding tension within shorter rolls; avoiding unnecessary heat exposure during conversion and storage; and ensuring immediate stripping after die cutting.

Benefits RHA technology combines rubber and acrylic performance to achieve the best of both worlds:

S8049 / S8039 for exceptional performance on difficult-to-label surfaces ▶ Copes with rough, slightly oily or very low surface energy substrates (including PE, PP and lacquers) ▶ Provides high peel adhesion on the most difficult substrates ▶ High chemical, temperature, uV and ageing resistance ▶ up to 20% higher conversion speed than common alternative, with less cleaning on press

S8029 for many applications requiring a high tack adhesive and a long life time ▶ Suits a majority of durables applications ▶ Available with a wide range of facestocks
