The rise of sustainability Protecting the planet and creating new business
Jeroen Diderich Vice President + General Manager Label and Graphic Materials Europe
Our latest Select Solutions™ portfolio of high performance and innovative materials helps you to create profitable and effective labelling applications. Differentiating your business is important, but we are especially proud of these solutions because they also achieve something more - they provide the more sustainable choices that every label converter now needs. I am delighted to see continued and rapidly growing demand for more effective and more sustainable materials in segments as diverse as pharma, durables, wine and spirits, intelligent labelling and functional labelling. In the past, environmental issues were often seen as something for niche brands, but both the market and consumers’ expectations have since undergone dramatic changes. For all of us, protecting the planet now takes centre stage, and both performance and sustainability underpin Avery Dennison innovations. Throughout this catalogue, you will see many different products designed specifically with sustainability in mind. It is rewarding to see such extensive efforts across the whole of Avery Dennison, and I am confident that whatever solution you choose from this collection, you will see not only better productivity and higher margins, but also the help you need to meet ambitious sustainability goals.
Our rCrush Grape facestock contains 15% grape waste from wine production. It is part of our rapidly growing selection of responsibly sourced products that facilitate material reduction, re-use and recycling.
Building a culture Working with many dedicated colleagues to achieve the best possible sustainability practice has made me understand how much improvements depend on culture as well as materials and technology - and our own contributions begin very close to home. For example, we abandoned single-use cups and bottles at our European headquarters, saving 600kg of waste in December alone. Our headquarters building is BREAAM® certified, complete with many energy saving technologies. I joined over 160 colleagues recently to spend a day fishing for plastic in Amsterdam’s canals (and a large office table was made from the plastic collected). As a company, we are also fully committed to ensuring diversity and a good workplace environment – the driving forces behind many innovative ideas and sustainability initiatives.
Protecting the planet now takes centre stage, and both performance and sustainability underpin Avery Dennison’s innovations. My confidence that we will see continued progress is underpinned by the fact that we invest heavily in R&D, with some of the deepest technological capabilities of any label material producer. Listening to customers is key, and many of our high performance solutions have been developed in response to specific customer needs. Demand for sustainable technologies comes not only from consumers and regulators but also increasingly from businesses with their own priorities.
03
Helping you choose Sustainability can be complex, and is often oversimplified with statements such as ‘plastic is bad’. We know very well that plastic packaging can in fact prevent food waste and reduce weight (and hence transport emissions). What matters is responsible sourcing and also responsible end-of-life strategies: adopting an approach that takes the whole lifecycle into account. We offer a rapidly growing selection of responsibly sourced products that facilitate material reduction, re-use and recycling, and the forthcoming Labelexpo will be one of the key venues where we unveil some of our latest initiatives.
Making it all happen Good sustainability practice begins with good business, and above all we are here to make sure that converters have the materials, the technical support and the service they need to deliver sustainability improvements. Select Solutions™ products exist to help your business innovate, differentiate and grow, and our technical specialists are on hand to solve any application challenge. We also offer the option of single roll ordering for those premium projects where you need to work at small volumes. I trust that this Select Solutions™ collection will inspire new business ideas. All of us at Avery Dennison are here to make sure that your business differentiates and thrives, so if you need something, let us know!

I was especially struck by a recent example - a summit organised by one of Spain’s largest wineries. They are already having to plant vines at higher altitudes to cope with climate change, and we were one of several partners invited to discuss ways to make them even more sustainable.

A label landscape transformed by recycling
09 Liner Recycling Program We collect PET and glassine liners for recycling directly from converters. De-siliconising the material allows us to reduce landfill and create a new source of recycled raw materials.
For labels, recycled content can be included both in facestocks and in liners such as those now using rPET content. Recyclability of the end product is also key. Bottles recycled to yield clean raw materials create a higher value.
One important change factor is the legislative landscape. Whereas new legislation used to require several years, we now see sustainability regulations being signed off by the European Union within a year (an example is A European Strategy for Plastics in a Circular Economy). Driven by both legislation and the increasing consumer appetite for environmentally responsible packaging, brand owners are looking for more sustainable solutions.
From a recycling point of view, we see a growing focus on collection and sorting, including collection strategies that help to attribute value to by-products, to encourage people to recycle. Developing a global infrastructure to enable collection is also important - so we can move beyond sorting on a costly mechanical or visual basis.
Reduce, reuse, recycle Under ‘Reduce’, the elimination of packaging is a priority where possible - for example, beer cans with no wraparound, and our ThinkThinTM label portfolio. For ‘Reuse’, loop packaging container systems, enabled by technologies such as MultiCycle™, are gaining ground. Recycled content in packaging remains perhaps the most visible strategy from a consumer point of view and, crucially, new looks and designs are becoming acceptable to enable this.
The benefits of sustainable materials Avery Dennison has been pioneering in offering recycled materials. For premium Select Solutions™ materials, the inclusion of recycled content can offer an additional benefit by helping to communicate brand values. For example, rCrush Grape paper is made using 15% grape waste sourced from wine production – a great choice for organic vineyards. Cane Fiber paper uses at least 90% bagasse fibre (waste from rum production) in its facestock. Such materials both look the part and tell a story, and our goal is always to make sure that sustainable products give like-for-like performance, including dispensing speed and visual impact.
Certified sourcing Avery Dennison already offers the industry’s widest selection of FSCcertified papers. While more than 95% of the paper facestock we purchase is already FSC-certified, we are committed to purchasing 100% certified-claim paper by 2025. We also offer options such as bio-based PE made from ethanol, produced by fermenting the sugar from Bonsucro-certified sugar cane. An encouraging future lies ahead, where we will see increasing collaboration across industries. All of us can help to create and pursue common goals for recycling, and ultimately enable greater rates of adoption.

The world of packaging is changing, and so are we. The famous Reduce, Reuse and Recycle concepts are still in place, but they are evolving as new “disruptions” or “opportunities” emerge in the market.

Sustainability in the label industry An interview with Jan ‘t Hart (Senior Director, Sustainability & Innovations) and Pascale Wautelet (Vice President R&D, Europe Label and Graphic Materials)
We are also working together with a broad range of industry partners to make sure that we develop state-of-the-art technologies that enable the recycling processes. Jan ‘t Hart
How is sustainability currently integrated in the label supply chain? JH. Sustainability has become much more about whole-system thinking. Historically there has been a focus on materials, such as FSCÂŽ-certified papers and reduced material consumption. That is still important, but the emphasis now is really more about the whole lifecycle of packaging. For example, how can you reduce material use as part of the original design? How can you ensure that packaging can be recycled? And how can you manage waste created during the production and application of labelling and packaging. Retailers and brand owners are therefore facing the challenge of balancing the convenience demanded by consumers with their increasing expectations for sustainability. This means rethinking materials, design, supply chains and waste management.
What are the main challenges for adoption of more sustainable solutions? PW. Adoption of more sustainable labelling and packaging is slowed down by a combination of factors. There are four key criteria that need to be met for recyclability. Packaging needs to be collected in some sort. It needs to be sorted in the predominant plastic type. Then reprocessed to the original plastic and a viable application or market needs to be found. So, the first challenges are communication, education and awareness. As consumers, we are still confused as to which labelling and packaging is more sustainable and what can be recycled or composted, where and how. Another key factor is the waste management infrastructure, which today is inadequate or even non-existent in some regions. Waste management requires significant investments in order to install new capacity, improve the logistics of collection, and to create more sophisticated sorting capabilities and efficient recycling facilities. A third factor is the need to accelerate innovation and design for recyclability, supported by harmonized guidelines, standardized certification protocols and incentive schemes. Finally, it is critical to change mindsets and recognize the need to bring the entire industry together, to be transparent and open and to promote greater collaboration across the value chain to accelerate innovative technology and solutions for the future.
11 Our CleanFlake™ solution was developed to reduce wastage of rigid PET containers during recycling
PW. We have a broad and holistic approach to sustainable innovation. We take into account the entire value chain. From raw materials sourcing to product end of life. Our goal is to deliver innovations that advance the circular economy and to use our materials science expertise to deliver products and solutions that enable recycling, include recycled content, and innovate away waste in labels and packaging. The sheer number of factors involved can make decisions difficult for converters and end users when it comes to packaging design. This is why we launched our sustainable ClearIntent™ portfolio, which focuses on solutions designed to enable clean recycling of plastic containers. An example discussed elsewhere in this catalogue is our CleanFlake™ solution, developed to enable efficient recycling of PET bottles or trays that can be reused in the production of new bottles. We estimate that around 1.3 billion bottles are wasted every year within the recycling process. This problem arises from incompatible label materials that contaminate the recycled PET plastic flake. Our CleanFlake™ technology facilitates clean label separation and allows the production of high quality rPET. The construction is compatible with design guidelines from the European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP) and from Petcore.
What are the biggest plastic-related myths that we need to bust?
Select Solutions™ | 2019
What key innovations does Avery Dennison have to solve some of these challenges?
JH. Plastic itself is not the problem. Problems begin after we use the plastic container or plastic or packaging. It’s all about responsible use, collection and recycling. Labels are a very important factor in this, not only because they can be sustainable themselves but also because they can convey messages to the consumer on how to use products responsibly, and how to recycle. Logos can make a difference to recycling performance. As part of our own innovation pipeline, we are also working together with a broad range of industry partners to make sure that we develop state-of-the-art technologies that enable the recycling processes.
We need to see greater collaboration across the value chain to improve solutions for the future. Pascale Wautelet

CleanFlake™ portfolio Recycled PET (rPET) is a valuable and sustainable material - with no limit in eliminating contamination from the recycling stream, and the Avery Dennison CleanFlake™ Portfolio is designed to improve rPET yields while maintaining all-important shelf appeal. Brands, packaging designers and manufacturers are all seeking PET packaging that supports conventional recycling, especially through clean separation during the sink/float washing process. CleanFlake™ technology meets the design guidelines from the European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP) and from Petcore, which place specific emphasis on raising the output of rPET. As a plug-and-play solution, compatible with the existing value chain, CleanFlake™ technology provides a simple route to improved recycling of PET bottles, leaving no adhesive residue on the resulting PET flakes. It improves upon existing self-adhesive labels, which limit PET recycling into new food-grade containers due to adhesive contamination. The unique ‘switchable’ CleanFlake SR3011 adhesive enables clean label separation in a caustic bath, at temperatures down to 70°C, lower than the typical industrial temperature of 85°C (performance at washing temperatures below 70°C needs to be evaluated individually per type of PET package and recycling process).
Application areas –– Labelling of existing or new PET bottles –– PET trays and thermoforms –– PET containers and other types of PET packaging destined for further recycling –– Home care, personal care, food and beverage
Key features –– Allows PET recycling into rPET, which preserves a valuable raw material –– Enables design freedom for self-adhesive labels –– Available with PP Clear (‘no label’ look) and PP White –– Available with rPET23 liner made partially from Post Consumer Waste (PCW) PET bottle flakes content –– Plug-and-play solution (compatible with current recycling requirements)

Sensorial collection Label look is just one part of a consumer’s impression of a bottle. Communicating brand values properly means going further - how does a label feel? What’s the sound when it’s touched? Is there perhaps even a scent? The Avery Dennison Sensorial collection gives designers a broader toolset. Different label surfaces can be created using soft touch, textured or patterned papers - for a premium, vintage or artisanal feel. Handpicked trees can be used to create wooden labels that recall the roots of nature with a delicate scent. Diverse label surfaces can be used to give consumers a subtle message when hearing the sound of a finger moving over the surface. And of course an outstanding visual impact is retained to engage the most dominant of all the senses. A wine, spirits and craft beer journey may always reach its zenith in taste, but Avery Dennison Sensorial materials help you give the consumer a detailed and rewarding experience on the way.
Application areas –– Wine –– Spirits –– Craft beer –– Luxury goods Key features –– Materials for any premium brand image –– Engage all consumer senses –– Deliver unique sensorial experiences to the customer –– Excellent service and minimum order quantities –– Winning label design collection: Silver Pencil Award 2017 and Graphis Silver Award 2017

PLUS technology Maintaining visual impact in wet conditions is crucial for brand owners in wine and spirits. However, many papers do not perform well under wet conditions, they discolor or wrinkle, making the label look unattractive. With Avery Dennison PLUS technology, wine labels can withstand the “ice bucket challenge”. An underlaminate protects the label against the formation of bubbles and pleats. This technology enables better stripping of complex label shapes. It also improves embossing. PLUS technology allows you to use a wide range of paper facestock for a premium and authentic look, while preserving your brand image in wet conditions. Thanks to improved service options, you can now offer PLUS technology on even the smallest projects and make the most of a fast-track route to powerful brand stories.
Application areas –– Wine –– Spirits –– Craft beer
Key features –– Fewer wrinkles and bubbles in the ice bucket –– Available on a wide range of uncoated and coated papers –– Improves stripping - a good choice for intricate label shapes –– Reduces matrix breaks during converting –– Improves embossing –– Excellent service and minimum order quantities

Digital labelling solutions Digital labelling solutions offer exceptional speed, flexibility and customisation – allowing businesses to create bespoke labels for printing on demand. Adoption of digital printing is growing, thanks in part to low minimum order quantities and reduced inventory levels. They offer a proven way to deliver multi-versioning, and adapt quickly to changing branding requirements. Digital printing also cuts revision costs, and improves sustainability by reducing levels of overstock and waste. Inkjet has the highest projected growth rate of all printing technologies over the next five years.* UV Inkjet and water-based Inkjet offer a number of performance and cost benefits compared with flexo, and in some cases with electrophotography. Our digital portfolio supports all major digital printing presses and technology groups - including HP Indigo, Xeikon, UV Inkjet, and waterbased Inkjet. The portfolio includes newly developed UV Inkjet wine facestocks that give maximum colour vibrancy, uniformity and text clarity, along with Silver PET for water-based Inkjet labels that stand out on the shelf. The products highlighted in this portfolio are a shortlist of a broader range of digitally printable materials.
Application areas –– Mass customisation –– Printing on demand –– UV Inkjet, dry toner, water-based Inkjet, HP Indigo
Key features –– Supports all major digital presses and technologies –– High print quality –– Performance and cost benefits –– Variety of adhesives for customised applications –– Low MOQs

Small diameter labelling Pharmaceutical containers, bottles, test tubes and syringes, are small with typical volumes of 1-100 ml and diameters of 7-50 mm. Demand for these containers is growing rapidly, thanks to patient benefits that include dosage accuracy and sterile conditions. Only the most advanced adhesive technology can cope with such small container diameters, and with low-energy surfaces such as polyethylene and polypropylene. Avery Dennison’s small-diameter pharmaceutical portfolio offers the excellent mandrel performance that is essential for successful conversion and high speed dispensing. Options include S692NP adhesive with exceptionally low-migration (important as plastic use grows), and S717P which minimises edge lift on low surface-energy substrates down to 10 mm in diameter. Luminescent topcoats for syringes and vials are now available to give label converters far better flexibility in adhesive selection. Pharmaceutical manufacturers benefit from faster qualification times, since the luminescent topcoats can be combined with previously qualified adhesives.
Application areas –– Prescription medicines or drugs –– Over-the-counter (OTC) products –– Auto-injector pens for diabetics, autoimmune deficiencies and more –– Pre-filled syringes and vials –– Small diameter containers: 7-50 mm diameter –– Glass, PE and PP substrates (including treated, slip-coated or varnished) –– Low migration labels for thin-walled LDPE containers –– Any application requiring excellent mandrel performance Key features –– Outstanding mandrel performance on small diameter containers –– Availability and change notification 12 months in advance* –– Compliance with FDA and European food regulations
* Applies to the following pharma adhesives: S2000NP, S2045NP, S717P, S692NP, S799P and S788P
33 All manufacturers of pharmaceutical packaging have to meet the challenges posed by new regulations and stronger packaging guidelines. There is growing pressure to understand rules in detail, and to make absolutely sure every package is compliant. That means rising demand from pharmaceutical companies for customised tests and individual packaging material certification. The Avery Dennison Pharma and Compliance Team is always on hand to give converters and pharmaceutical companies detailed information, and technical support. These are useful resources when navigating the complexities of pharmaceutical applications and making sure the end result is both successful and compliant. ***

Anti-counterfeit labelling technology Anti-counterfeiting solutions are hard-to-copy features, integrated with labels. They enable authorities and/or consumers to tell the difference between an authentic product and a counterfeit one. They can be combined with tamper-evident features to meet any required security level. Protecting products against counterfeiting is important in numerous segments ranging from pharmaceuticals, spare parts and electronics to food, wine and spirits, and high-end cosmetics. All brands can benefit from enhanced protection standards and customised anti-counterfeit solutions from Avery Dennison.
Security Holograms Micro-embossed metallised papers or films with 2D/3D holographic diffraction patterns. Can be registered with the Industrial Hologram Manufacturers Association (IHMA) database for further security. Security Papers OBA-free (Optical Brightening Agent) papers with/without fibres (visible or UV luminescent). It is possible to integrate customized fibers, watermarks and threads into the label material. Suitable for official documents that require authentication. Security Voids These filmic products show a void effect when tampered with. Labels cannot be re-applied and they are highly resistant to water, grease oils, chemicals and UV. You can customize the void message with your text and logo of choice. Fiber Tracker The Fiber Tracker anti-counterfeiting solution uses Prooftag™ FiberTag™ technology. Verifying a product’s authenticity is made easy for businesses and consumers alike, using nothing more than a smartphone - in a warehouse, retail outlet or at home. Each label carries a unique, individual and visible fingerprint. Choosing the appropriate anti-counterfeiting solution depends on –– Understanding available security features –– Knowing what level of security is required –– Determining which security solutions can complement available resources A careful assessment of these factors helps manufacturers, packagers, label developers and printers to establish a security strategy, incorporating multilayer features that protect the brand at an optimal level. Contact our experts to learn more about how to select the right security solution.

Lubricant and Oil Can solutions Lubricant and oil cans pose major labelling challenges, thanks to oily, aggressive and possibly hazardous contents as well as textured container surfaces. All of these factors make adhesion difficult. Brand owners want bottles to attract consumers - often using high quality silver labels - so pleating, bubbling, and scuffing must be avoided. Containers must also survive storage outside on forecourts, so water resistance is important. The Avery Dennison S277-based portfolio supports high-speed labelling, and labels can be applied immediately after blow molding of the containers - a point where surface energy is extremely low and adhesion is difficult. The materials also resist bubble formation from outgassing. The S477-based products have been developed to support label application on the filling line (hot-fill process). They allow containers to expand and contract during hot filling without causing pleats and wrinkles.
Application areas –– Lubricant bottles –– Oil cans –– Brake fluid containers –– Cooling fluid containers –– Other hot-fill applications, such as food
Key features –– Can be applied immediately after container production or on filling lines –– Adhesives perform well on low energy surfaces –– Avoids pleats and wrinkles from container expansion/contraction –– Excellent service, including EXACT service on dedicated grades

Harmonizing labels worldwide with GHS The Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for Classification and Labelling of Chemicals is an international, standardised set of criteria for labelling chemical containers, drums, IBCs and barrels. Developed by the United Nations, GHS communicates hazard information and safety precautions, minimising the risk of handling errors and the regulatory burdens on chemical producers. All hazardous chemicals, substances and mixtures in all uses are covered by GHS, from production and storage to workplaces and consumers. It does not apply to food, pharmaceuticals or cosmetics. A two-part classification shows the type of hazard on one label (such as flammable or corrosive to metals) and the degree of hazard on another (Category 1 is the most severe). GHS standardises six basic elements: –– Hazard symbols or pictograms surrounded by a red diamond (red diamonds must not be blank) –– Signal words such as ‘danger’ or ‘warning’ –– Hazard statements such as ‘fatal if swallowed’ –– Precautionary statements regarding storage, disposal or handling –– Product identifier defining chemical ingredients –– Company identifier
53 BS 5609 Marine immersion label testing standard
The BS 5609 standard has four sections: –– Section 1: An introduction to BS 5609, definitions, and a description of general requirements and responsibilities –– Section 2: Methods and requirements for testing a label’s base material –– Section 3: Test methods and requirements for testing the label, including the print –– Section 4: Guidance for shippers and users on the selection and application of labels Section three covers the final printed labels, including inks and ribbons applied to the materials that were certified in Section two. These printed labels are tested for print key effectiveness, legibility, print permanence, resistance to abrasion and weathering from light, from salt spray and from sand.
Certification service
Typically, the regulatory burden of Section three falls on label converters, who are responsible for certifying the printing systems, inks and ribbons applied on Section two-certified base materials. To simplify the BS 5609 certification process for converters, Avery Dennison offers free of charge Section three testing and certification. Printed samples and information on the inks or ribbons are required; test results can be obtained within 4 weeks and a certificate will be issued. If you are interested in getting your labels BS 5609-certified, ask your sales representative for the service request form.
Select Solutions™ | 2019
Although only Section two tests apply to the unprinted adhesive/facestock combination, Avery Dennison also helps customers and end-users further, by testing the printed labels. Shippers need to ensure print quality at all times and Avery Dennison is currently testing a variety of inks and ribbon/printer combinations. This will make products of the Avery Dennison Drum Label Portfolio compliant with BS 5609 Section three. Underwriters Laboratories (UL) has validated the Avery Dennison laboratory for testing BS 5609.

Heat-activated adhesive Warning and identification labels for technical textiles have to perform reliably in safety-critical segments such as automotive. The labels must adhere permanently to the substrate, which is usually both rough and flexible. UV resistance and flame retardancy are also often mandatory. Conventional solutions include direct printing of the parts or the application of ink by heat transfer, but now our patent-pending adhesive S8072 offers an alternative. Providing label converters an opportunity to grow business in new segments, this heat-activated adhesive now offers textile users high-performance labels, with a permanent bond that keeps important information in place.
Application areas –– Suitable for applications on woven and non-woven textiles used in automotive and industrial applications Key features –– Innovative, patent-pending adhesive technology –– After heat and pressure are applied, the pressure-sensitive adhesive crosslinks to form a structural, permanent bond –– Chemical and UV resistant, and flame retardant –– Approved for several automotive specifications –– Variable data can be added prior to heat application using standard thermal transfer ribbons
57 Product information
Adhesive technology S8072 is a low-tack acrylic adhesive, coated onto a cast PVC film and protected with a glassine liner. The label construction has the look and feel of a standard label material, with a removable adhesive. It can be printed and die-cut like any other label material. After heat and pressure are applied for 4-6 seconds to the finished product, the adhesive cross-links and forms a permanent structural bond. Day(s) = Business day(s)

Tyre labelling Brand and energy labels for tyres are now a standard requirement, with the latter compulsory in the EU since November 2012. Both pose unique labelling challenges, and a rough, low surface energy substrate makes specialist labelling technology essential. Missing labels mean lost profits and tyres often face severe handling and storage conditions long before they reach a wheel. Avery Dennison offers the high performance labelling materials needed to make sure that labels look good and stay in position on the tread. Extensive segment experience means we can ensure high productivity all the way from conventional print converting to thermal transfer printing by end-users. Key trends in the tyre industry are auto-labelling and tracking and tracing during the lifetime of the tyre. Avery Dennison supplies dedicated materials that support these needs.
Application areas –– All types of tyre labelling –– Specific brand owner application requirements Key features –– Excellent thermal transfer printability –– Rubber-friendly higher adhesive coat weights –– Production-friendly gum patterns to eliminate bleeding –– Application specific coat weights (winter/summer, hairy/shaven) –– Special products for easy automatic dispensing –– Back-side siliconisation option, so labels do not adhere to the liner –– In-depth technical sales support available –– New water-based inkjet tyre labels, for specific labelling needs

Cable labelling Effective and dependable labelling of cables in cabinets, workstations and offices is essential when installing, repairing or troubleshooting. Labels both aid product identification and establish branding – so good printability is important, usually for thermal transfer printers and ribbons. The Avery Dennison Cable portfolio minimizes ‘butterflying’, combining a flexible film with a high cohesion, high shear adhesive. This is especially important for small diameter cables, which need more flexible films and higher performance adhesives. Portfolio options include UL-recognised materials suitable for applications in the US, and materials with flame retardant properties and good resistance to UV light. White, highly flexible materials are available for flag labels (with space for printed text or barcodes), as well as transparent materials for wrap-around labels where space is limited.
Applications Areas –– Flag cable labelling –– Wrap-around cable labelling –– Tubes label marking Key features –– Supports a wide range of label types –– Good printability –– High performance adhesive and flexible facestock –– Good resistance to ‘butterfly effect’ –– Options include UL-recognised, flame retardant and UV-resistant materials

Overlaminating films for durable goods labelling Overlaminating films are often used to create high performance durable goods labels. These films protect a label and its printed images from chemical and mechanical influences, and from harmful UV light. The label can maintain its desired function over a labelled item’s lifetime, complete with all identification, tracking or branding information. Overlaminating films can also be used to increase label caliper and rigidity. Avery Dennison overlaminates have been chosen not only for functionality but also for high-performance aesthetics, including a striking ‘clear-onclear’ look, highly transparent matt overlamination and a velvet surface.
Application areas –– Automotive under-the-hood –– Household appliances –– Electronic devices –– Industrial applications –– Do-it-yourself equipment
Key features –– Films with high clarity –– Adhesives AL170 and S8020 offer excellent UV and temperature resistance –– Low risk of yellowing –– Excellent chemical resistance (AL170) –– UV protection for sensitive inks with Overlam PET23 UV and PET23 UV Plus (e.g. digital print applications) –– UL and C-UL recognised overlamination films –– Small minimum order quantities

Removable labels for windows An efficient supply chain appeals to every manufacturer, including those dealing with sensitive surfaces. Due to a higher demand for energyefficient working and living environments, window manufacturing is growing rapidly. It means important new business opportunities for converters who can provide reliable labelling across this supply chain. The impact on both cost and brand reputation is high if adhesive residue remains on the inside surface of a double-glazed window, where cleaning is not possible. Effective window labels that adhere reliably and can be removed cleanly from glass allow window manufacturers to swiftly identify a high throughput of individual parts. Such labels can keep orders together all the way up to installation - without slowing down the supply chain because of missing labels or creating a need to remove adhesive residue. The Window Removables portfolio from Avery Dennison provides filmic and paper products for the entire windows supply chain. Materials in this overview use specific adhesives that have shown very good clean removability performance in both natural and accelerated ageing conditions on glass, using UV, moisture and temperature variation to simulate indoor and outdoor use.
Application areas –– Filmic identification, energy and branding labels for windows and sheets of glass –– Paper work-in-progress labels applied directly onto glass
Key features –– Clean removability from glass under tested conditions* –– Labels stay on throughout the supply chain –– Alternatives to PVC labels and static cling materials
Labels have passed lab testing in natural and accelerated ageing conditions on uncoated glass. Removal below 0°C can negatively influence clean removability.

Work-in-progress labels for indoor use Ultra-low, smooth peel Every piece of glass needs to be identified before and after assembly. Label materials used must enable VI-print, such as barcodes, in combination with a branding pre-print. –– Ultra-removable paper materials with UR400 adhesive –– Suitable for short-term applications, and not outdoor applications with exposure to moisture and UV (due to the paper facestock) Identification labels Reliable tracking labels with some weatherability resistance Window units and sheets of glass move between manufacturing and construction sites, and labels help to keep each unit accounted for throughout the supply chain. A branding pre-print and VI will often be combined. Filmic labels are more suitable, due to exposure to outdoor elements such as rain and sunshine during transportation. –– Gloss and matt filmic alternatives with C3NF adhesive –– Barcode readability Information labels Labels that support product selection and correct installation More than one label is often used, to meet increasing demand for information that supports product comparison, evaluation and selection. Identification of inside/outside and/or top/bottom of the windows is paramount during the installation phase. Reliable labelling with clean removability is required. –– Topcoated filmic materials for optimal multi-colour printing (e.g. energy labels) –– Clean removability Branding labels
* Due to the vast variety of glass types and coatings, testing before use under end-user conditions is strongly recommended.
For a lasting impression of brand quality Branding labels will generally stay on windows longest, even after installation, and offer brand owners longer exposure on construction sites, in retail stores and in consumer homes. –– Nice-looking, topcoated filmic label material that does not leave a trace behind –– Easy to apply by hand, due to a thicker caliper face material - PP90

Factors to consider when selecting a removable label Facestock Internal strength or weakness of a facestock is a significant factor for ultimate removability. Higher strength ensures a greater degree of removability by avoiding facestock split or tear.
Substrate Shape, roughness and cleanliness of the surface must be known when selecting the correct adhesive. Is it flat or curved, textured or corrugated, damp or dry?
Exposure conditions Are there any unusual environmental conditions during or after application? What is the minimum application temperature of the adhesive?
Label size The greater the area of adhesive contact, the greater the force required to remove the label. For large labels, choose an ultra-removable adhesive or one with a low ultimate adhesion.

Reclosure labels for home & personal care A range of peel-and-reseal labels for wet wipes, which ensure long-lasting product quality and optimal brand awareness.
Adhesives for any type of wet wipes Adhesive plays a crucial role for wet wipe packaging, retaining moisture and enabling multiple open/close functionality. The choice of adhesive is driven by pack contents and type of labelling surface. Our R1490M and UVR145 adhesives meet the requirements of personal care, cosmetics & baby wipes, while MR980R adhesive features the highest resistance for strong chemicals in packs of more demanding household wet wipes. Sustainability and reclosure labels Label reclosures offer additional benefits when compared with solid boxes and flexible packaging with hard plastic lids. They provide a lightweight solution with similar functionality, while preserving pack contents, preventing spillage and significantly reducing the amount of plastic used. Monomaterial flexible packaging in combination with reclosure labels is also a very effective way to support better recycling. Application areas –– Household cleaning & care –– Personal care & cosmetics –– Baby care
Key features –– Excellent moisture and chemical content resistance –– Medium to high adhesion and smooth peel on matt and gloss packaging surfaces –– Very good UV resistance –– New rigid and monomaterial ranges

Reclosure labels for food packaging Peel-and-reseal labels for dry or moist food content applications safe, dependable and industry-compliant. Resealable labels are valued by consumers, giving them open/close functionality that prevents food contamination and spillage. Brand owners also benefit, because food products stay in their original packaging, increasing brand awareness.
Food-friendly solutions Our reclosure label solutions are approved for use in contact with food. The choice of reclosure adhesive depends on brand requirements and the type of food - dry, fresh or frozen. Fresh foods such as cheese or herbs, which have to stay fresh longer, also require label solutions with an oxygen barrier. The barrier films in our reclosure portfolio prevent oxygen from permeating through the label and spoiling pack contents. Comprehensive support is available to ensure the right choice - an Avery Dennison technical specialist can help you to consider different aspects and requirements of food reclosure applications. Some initial guidance on food reclosure adhesives can be found in the adhesive performance comparison table.

Cover-up Opaque range High-opacity barrier coating on paper or film can hide errors and cover outdated information on packaging, labels and containers. Typing errors, changes, omissions, updates… no matter what the mistake or need to re-label, the Avery Dennison Select Solutions Cover-up range can make it right without the high cost and environmental impact of re-packaging. Almost every packaged product will need to have its labelling changed or adapted at some point in its life. It is crucial to ensure that any overlabelling is truly opaque, so the new labels are fully legible and - especially for correction labels - overprinted data is hidden. Avery Dennison opaque label stocks offer label converters and their customers an unrivalled range of options in both paper and film, complete with permanent or removable adhesives. The range is a genuine one-stop shop for all correction applications, and the sheer quantity of choices available allows for highly creative solutions. Most paper or film products can be customised on demand to use a specific opaque colour - for example, an attractive coloured background on a clear bottle.
Application areas –– Correction labels –– Translation labels –– Promotional labels –– Shipping and tracking labels Key features –– Opaque prime films –– Opaque prime papers –– Opaque VI (Variable Information) front materials –– A selection of standard colours and multiple opaque layers –– Custom colours

Direct Thermal films Food packaging continues to grow in importance – and consumers increasingly like to see the product inside. Premiumisation of packaging is happening all around us. End users want their product to look as good as possible, and do not want to compromise on functionality. Avery Dennison Direct Thermal films are topcoated, BPA-free films that maximise shelf-appeal for packaging where variable information is printed at the last minute. Meat, fruit and vegetable labels can be created that are not affected by moisture, grease and fat. Our S692N adhesive supports general purpose applications, whereas S2800 and C2040 give high performance on fresh and cold surfaces. Any label can be made direct thermal printable using a thin overlaminate film, at low Minimum Order Quantities, including selected parts of a preprinted standard or prime label. This enables late-stage serialisation while maintaining original label characteristics.
Application areas –– Prepacked meat in plastic trays –– Fresh fruit and produce packaging –– Food sold by weight, weighed in-store –– Addition of variable information section to prime labels
Key features –– White and Transparent direct thermal printable film –– PP75 Clear grades offering improved transparency –– Economical PP70 matt clear alternatives –– PP25 overlaminate can make any label direct thermal printable
