BEAUTY GUIDE

How to GLOW from the Inside BY KATY MOODY CUSICK

T

HERE IS A HIGHLIGHTER OR ILLUMINATOR FOR JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING in the beauty industry! And we’re not complaining, but how can you get that natural skin glow without putting something on your skin!? We have done the research and found our top 5 ways you can eat or drink your skincare.

CHAMOMILE TEA

COLLAGEN

WATER

LEMON

FATTY FISH

Various infusions of chamomile are useful for clearing up skin problems! The herb may aid in cases of eczema, dermatitis, and some forms of acne. One of the ways that chamomile tea is believed to be so good for conditions such as skin problems is its ability to prevent the body from releasing inflammatory compounds. Called prostaglandins, these compounds are usually produced by white blood cells in response to injury or infection. Fewer inflammatory prostaglandins mean less pain and easier recovery.

Collagen can improve overall skin health. Collagen is a large component of your skin. It helps to strengthen skin, plus may benefit elasticity and hydration. As you age, your body produces less and collagen, leading to dry skin and the formation of wrinkles. Because collagen is a byproduct of animals, we recommend buying humanely raised and or organic!

The fact is that your skin is an organ, and just like any other part of the body. Skin is composed of cells. Skin cells, like any other cell in the body, are made up of water. Without water, the organs will certainly not function properly or at their best. If your skin is not getting an adequate amount of water, the lack of hydration will present itself by turning your skin dry, tight, and flaky. Dry skin has less resilience and is more prone to wrinkling!

Lemon juice can be used for so many purposes including skincare. It has natural astringent properties which can be used to lighten skin tone and get rid of many skin blemishes. It completely blends in with any item. It is also rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. Its acidic fluid works as an exfoliator and heals so many skin problems. It leaves your skin feeling clean and glowing. Lemon can also help get rid of all the dead skill cells which make your skin look dull and tired. So lemon has been used for many centuries together for beauty treatments. There are so many ways that you can use lemon on your skin to attain that picture-perfect look.

Salmon is rich with antioxidants that calm inflammation. “Their free fatty acids serve as building blocks for healthy skin cells.” In what way? “Since our bodies can’t produce the fatty acids, [eating them] helps reinforce your skin’s barrier, and keeps moisture in and irritants out,” adds Leslie Baumann, MD, certified board dermatologist. She recommends eating wild salmon over farm-raised for an optimal dose of omega-3s.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This advice reflects the recommendations of dietitians and other various professionals, but we also recommend speaking with your health-care provider before beginning any dietary regimen. Results can vary depending on your health goals and certain health conditions.

BEAUTY GUIDE

Bombshell on theBlock

BY KATIE ANN MAGYAR

O

KAY, SO WE ARE A WAYS INTO OUR NEW YEAR’S resolutions. This is your guide, and questions to ask yourself as you trudge through winter and the dawn of the new year to help you grow into the best version of you. For many, last year was full of a lot of staying at home and adjusting to the new normal. It’s okay if you felt like you got stuck and didn’t make the progress on yourself you thought you would! Don’t be scared to go for it! It’s time. Any beauty or wellness guru will tell you to ask yourself, “does this serve you” while on the road to personal growth? Similarly, I think it is important to ask yourself, “will this help me be the person I want to be?” If you are working towards growth, what are the habits you are creating doing for you? How do they push you to be better? Next to that idea, what is holding you back from who you want to be? It’s a new year, it’s a new age. The world is changing rapidly around us. If you want to wear hot pink clothes paired with glitter eye shadow, who is stopping you? If you want to lose ten pounds, who is stopping you? When it comes to being your best self, the only person standing in your way is you. The people we are meant to be are waiting for us. Don’t let the seasonal depression or the pandemic depression get to you queen! It may be colder, and the days may be shorter, but who you want to evolve into is built in these times right now. The way you wanted to transform your life, and the person you wanted to work on being before the new year is still there. They’re waiting for you. Now is the time to be daring. Be audacious. We have overcome so much in the past year, and been forced to evolve. Now, take command of that. Put yourself in the driver’s seat. Create an environment that will help you thrive! Intake media that helps inspire you to keep working on yourself. Don’t give up on your goals or your dreams because it’s not as easy to keep up with it as it might be in the summer. You will thank yourself in a few months. It only takes 21 days to build a habit. That’s three weeks of concentration before it starts to become your lifestyle. You can do this!

AVEDA SHAMPURE DRY SHAMPOO $32.00

BY DIANNA ELIZABETH

E ALL KNOW HOW HAIR CAN LOSE ITS LIFE AFTER BEING OUT IN THE heat for a few hours, or even after one or two days of not being washed. Hair can go from fab to drab real quick! We try everything to get some body and life back into it but it just says “nope!” Luckily, Aveda carries some must have products that will help get your hair feeling lifted and sexy again within minutes. Aveda’s Foam Reset, and Shampure Dry Shampoo is the perfect combo to bring your hair back to life! Foam reset is great when you have zero time to wash your hair but need a refresher! Not only does it cleanse and refresh the scalp with its foamy consistency, but it also helps with cellular turnover, (the shedding of dead skin cells and replacement of new ones) leaving the hair and scalp hydrated and conditioned, so your scalp will feel refreshed, brand new, and flake free! On dry hair, just apply one to two pumps onto your fingertips and massage directly onto your scalp and let dry. Your hair and scalp will thank you. Next, puff a few puffs of Aveda’s dry shampoo to the roots of your hair, massage it in with your fingertips and watch as your hair gets instant, weightless body and volume. Shampure Dry Shampoo is lightweight, smells amazing, and will not leave your hair feeling sticky or tacky.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Day to Daywith Dr. Renae BY RENAE SWEENEY, DMD

A

RE YOU READY TO DITCH YOUR N95 MASK AND REVEAL YOUR BEAUTIFUL SMILE?! You might be asking, “how can makeup alter your smile,” Contrast and color are key. Check out these tips for an instantly whiter smile!

22

3 TIPS: • BRONZED GODDESS • COOL COLORS • GLOSS IS BOSS

BRONZED GODDESS

COOL COLORS

GLOSS IS BOSS

Adding a little bronzer will help to highlight the white in your teeth making them look brighter. The darker your complexion, the whiter your teeth tend to look. Blondes and those with fair complexions have a more difficult time making their teeth appear white than brunettes and those with darker complexions.

When it comes to lipstick and your teeth, orange is your enemy. Aim for cool tones vs warm tones when choosing a lip shade. Lipsticks with a blue undertone will help to contrast and counteract the natural yellow of your teeth. Meanwhile, those with a warm or orange undertone will accent the yellow. Try a true cherry red, fuchsia or purple for a fun pop of color!

Matte lip colors will make your teeth appear dull and dry. Glossy lips will help your teeth look whiter as it reflects light off of your teeth. When choosing a lip gloss, go with a cooler silver shimmer over gold to help brighten your smile.

$5.99 PRONAMEL .pronamel.us

$4.99 COLGATE SENSITIVE colgate.com

$5.98 ACT TOTAL CARE MOUTH RINSE actoralcare.com

Q & A with Dr. Renae Q: I have sensitive teeth, is there anything I can do to help with this?! A: Teeth can become sensitive for a number of reasons. The most common causes are tooth decay (cavities), chipped tooth, broken filling, gum recession, teeth clenching/grinding, etc. Other habits like tooth whitening, and consuming foods or drinks which are acidic which can lead to thinning of the tooth can also contribute to tooth sensitivity. It’s important to see your dentist for an exam to identify the causative factors. At home products such as a desensitizing toothpaste like Sensodyne Rapid Relief, a fluoride mouth rinse such as ACT Total Care, and a soft bristled toothbrush can help with sensitivity.

Q: What toothpastes do you recommend for sensitivity?

Q: What are your thoughts on charcoal toothpaste?

A: There are many great toothpastes out there. The main thing to look for is fluoride, Sodium Fluoride or Stannous Fluoride. Both types help to protect teeth against decay and acidic breakdown. Fluoride works by integrating into the enamel (outermost protective layer) which allows for strengthening and remineralization of the tooth. Some of the most popular sensitivity toothpastes are Colgate Sensitive, Crest ProHealth Gum and Sensitivity, Sensodyne and Pro-Namel. My personal favorite is Sensodyne Rapid Relief Toothpaste.

A: Charcoal toothpastes are too abrasive for everyday use and can actually weaken your teeth over time. Activated charcoal in toothpaste may help remove surface stains on your teeth, but can also wear down your enamel which can make your teeth appear more yellow as it exposes the dentin (inner layer of tooth). This can also lead to increased sensitivity. Although charcoal toothpastes have been a popular trend, there are more effective products for whitening your teeth such as at home whitening products and toothpastes.

ASK NURSE RAMINA

HOW TO DEAL WITH

MASK-NE BY: RAMINA ASHFAQUE, RN

Since masks are now part of our daily outfit, how do we keep our skin fresh and acne free?

I

T IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE GENERAL PUBLIC wears cloth masks, which are intended to trap the droplets that are released when the wearer talks, sneezes, or coughs. But what’ happening underneath? Well, our masks can cause irritation from the continuous friction which can cause our skin to breakdown. When we’re breathing under these tightly fitted masks, our breath that’s trapped beneath makes our skin warm and moist which can cause our pores to get clogged, and then boom, pimples. So, how do we combat this problem? First things first, your skin care routine. You should be using a fragrance free gentle cleanser (I like the Vanicream gentle facial cleanser) and a good moisturizer with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid ( I use the CeraVe moisturizer, and the Mario Badescu Hyaluronic Dew Drops) which helps promote skin cell regeneration by extra hydration and barrier protection to the skin. At night I also like to add BioOil to the mix, which keeps skin soft and smooth while enhancing recovery from damage to the skin barrier. Unfortunately, makeup is one of the biggest causes of mask-ne. The trapped makeup underneath our masks lead to clogged pores and breakouts. So if you are having this issue, it is recommended to avoid makeup where possible. Oftentimes people are wearing the same mask over and over again, which can cause more acne, so you should keep a rotation of masks and wash them after every use with a gentle fragrance free detergent. Because of the Pandemic, we are probably going to be wearing masks for a long time. The right skin care routine can help lessen mask-ne!

SUSTAINABILITY IN BEAUTY

M

AJORITY OF SEPHORA’S CONsumers, and makeup fanatics are in the millennial and gen-z space. This demographic’s interests are influenced by social media and the ongoing issues in our world today. Hence why the beauty space has grown tremendously through influencers and beauty gurus having platforms on YouTube and TikTok. Another popular interest is in sustainability, how we can better protect our planet and our wellbeing. One of the first mainstream trends in environmentally conscious consumption was in organic food. Over time, the demand also expanded to fashion and beauty products. Sephora is the leading player in luxury makeup, and can set the standard for beauty. This parallels Whole Foods’ influence on most other grocery stores to have organic sections and labels. It currently has a “Clean at Sephora” category

SEPHORA’S

“Good For” PROGRAM

BY ELIZABETH TRAN for products that did not contain controversial ingredients like sulfates, parabens, and phthalates. They require brands to conduct audits on all their products to not include anything in their “formulated without” list, including products in the future. They have now started to expand its sustainability practices with the “Good For” program. It was announced September 2020 but I was only able to find it presently in Greek and Spanish. It is to be determined when they will add this to the USA. This new labeling takes it a step further with over a thousand products that are vegan, natural, use less packaging, and can be recycled. The categories are listed below.

GOOD FOR YOU Similar to Sephora’s Clean category, these products are at least 90% natural with a maximum 1% synthetic perfume.

GOOD FOR A BETTER PLANET These beauty products are responsibly-sourced and / or have eco-designer packaging to reduce your carbon footprint.

GOOD FOR VEGAN These products do not contain ingredients of animal origin, including but not limited to beeswax, honey, silk, milk, gelatin, and keratin.

GOOD FOR RECYCLING Sephora will actually recycle your emptied containers - this includes perfume, glass, and plastic containers. They will become secondary materials for packaging in the future. According to the press release on LVMH’s website, Sephora’s “We Care For Good” program has also been revamped to provide transparent information on Sephora’s beauty products’ composition, packaging, and environmental efforts. We are not sure when this will be implemented in the USA, especially when competitor Ulta already has an existing “Conscious Beauty” section. In order to avoid greenwashing, which is misleading marketing efforts on sustainability, I believe Sephora should be held accountable by a larger green beauty entity. Especially with recycling the makeup containers, given they come from different brands that use varying plastics. However, the shift in major players to become more sustainable brings hope to the environmental movement overall.

O

UR 25 YEAR OLD COVER STAR KARISELLE SNOW DECIDED to take full advantage of being on Season 8 of MTV’s reality dating show, Are You The One? by leaving the show with a massive social media following, a successful YouTube Channel, and even the title of Miss New Jersey United States. As a bisexual beauty queen, Kariselle is using this opportunity to promote her advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community. INFECTA: What’s been your most fearless career move? KARISELLE: Definitely pursuing TV! I was previously in a toxic work environment that I thought I would be stuck doing forever. One day I just had enough and quit without a back up plan, applied to a TV show, and the odds were in my favor! I was on a plane a month later to start filming. I: Spill the tea on your dating life right now:

K: I am an old fashioned hopeless romantic, so I will not settle down until I know I’ve found the one! I did have a special lady in my life for a period of 2020, but ultimately I’m just focused on myself.

I: As a sagittarius, your sign doesn’t disappoint. After spending time with you on set today we’ve definitely noticed that you’re the life of the party! K: They say do what you love and I love to party! So after being in the right place at the right time, I somehow managed to make that happen. You’ll see me anywhere from being a live model in costume, leading the DJ booth at a birthday party, or at a club in NYC showing visitors why it’s the greatest city in the world! I: We stalked your Instagram and gagged when we saw your Harley Quinn cosplay look. Tell us about your cosplay hobby: K: A big part of my job is dressing in costume sometimes, and my first regular costume appearances were actually as Elsa from Frozen! I’ve always been a lowkey lover of DC comics, so when the new blonde Harley came out I decided to give it a try just for fun at first. Long story short, it turned into lots of comic conventions, cosplay photoshoots, and hours of YouTube tutorials. I: Any crazy beauty tips or stories from your cosplay career? K: Cosplay is by far the coolest community I’ve personally been a part of. One year, I had to attend New York Comic Con all by myself, because my friend had a conflict last minute. I didn’t know anyone, and somehow ended up leaving with so many new friends who instantly included me! I even ran into someone by himself dressed as The Joker, so we stuck together most of the time taking pictures with cosplay fans! I still don’t know what he ACTUALLY looks like to this day. I: As a survivor of domestic violence, tell us how you overcame this dark past and please share any advice that you have for victims of domestic violence: K: I always say that “abuse is a sober addiction.” It’s so much harder to get out of than people think. After my abuser was arrested, I had time to really focus on detaching and building a new life for myself. I was able to overcome this dark past by volunteering, and becoming certified as a Domestic Violence Advocate in the state of New Jersey. My best advice to anyone who was a victim is that helping is healing. The best way to heal from the past is to help others.

I: Tell us about being a bisexual celebrity and being a part of the LGBTQ+ community with such a large fan base:

K: There’s no bigger loyalty than that of the gays! I was really

EELING CONFIDENT COMES FROM UNDERSTANDING OURSELVES AND taking the time to know who we are and how we feel about the life in which we are living..When we feel secure and have experience in faith we can naturally unleash an energy of confidence that is intoxicating, sexy, beautiful, and powerful. A confidence that attracts the kind of attention that feels supported by love and good vibrations. Confidence is an inner beauty that radiates and illuminates our truth. The Goddess that is within us all is confident, not because she is perfect, but rather because she is not. For as she finds herself in the rapture of life, lessons are learned, boundaries are made, and a hunger for more is always desired. The faith in knowing that she is thy creator, and through this confidence within she accepts her imperfections, and embraces them as unique qualities that teach her,and therefore makes her whole. The truth that you see in her confidence comes from a place of knowing she has the ability to change the world and light up the darkest spaces. Take time to love yourself, to heal as needed, feed your vessel with high vibrations, and discover yourself daily...For the Goddess within awaits you, your confidence will unleash her inner beauty and give you a glow that upholds the measure of time...Gifting you the magic that authentically shines.
