CAMBER BLOG What You Need to Know about Private Jets in a Postpandemic World Business aviation has begun the process of recovery and will soon become an integral part of the dayto-day business for more companies than before the COVID pandemic. With airlines’ reduced networks combined with the challenges of social distancing, companies are seeking safe and efficient travel for their management, technical and sales teams that only business aviation can offer. It has been proven, especially during the COVID pandemic, that flying privately is a remarkably safer and more efficient way of traveling. This is changing the very essence of how we will perceive the business aircraft in the future.

Changing the Perspective The pandemic has allowed us to take a step back, examine and optimize our business model to focus exclusively on what we do best - guiding our clients as their trusted advisors through the complex process of selecting, outfitting or refurbishing their corporate jet. Camber doesn't offer brokerage services and we are not linked to a specific designer or completion center, so we are completely independent, which allows us to provide objective and unbiased guidance for our private, corporate and head of state clients. We have been closely observing the market and have identified key changes in our industry due to the pandemic.

Safety is in Demand With the COVID pandemic, travel has become more challenging than ever. Traveling by private jet means knowing each of the passengers you’re traveling with, having greater space in the cabin, direct flights, and arriving or departing at private terminals. This form of travel is an attractive alternative to airline travel. Corporate aviation offers efficient, convenient and safe travel between points that may not currently be served by the airlines.

Chartering Will Flourish The pandemic has caused people and companies to seriously consider business aviation with demand increasing, especially amongst individuals and businesses that previously flew exclusively with the airlines. The stereotype of a private flight being solely for the rich, famous, and extravagant is being deconstructed. Each day more people are considering using private jets and demand for charter flights continues to steadily rise.

Fractional Ownership Individuals and companies that intend to fly privately on a regular basis are well advised to consider fractional ownership. Essentially, this investment provides guaranteed access to a specific aircraft type for a pre-defined rate on an annual basis. Some fractional ownership schemes allow a fractional owner to up- or down-size the aircraft type for a specific mission that requires different passenger capacity and/or performance than the contracted aircraft. Fractional ownership offers tax deductions in some countries that make this form of private aviation very attractive to businesses.

There is a More Effective Solution Aircraft ownership begins to make economic sense once the individual or business sees a consistent annual requirement for 250 flight hours or more. The owner will benefit by having unlimited access to the aircraft and the flexibility of being able to travel when required. New aircraft offer the latest technologies combined with an OEM designed cabin that reflects an owners requirements coupled with the benefits of warranties and service packages. One of the most interesting trends within the industry lies in the refurbishment of large cabin aircraft ranging from Bombardier Globals and Dassault Falcon business jets to ACJ and BBJ narrowbody aircraft, where the asset has been depreciated but the aircraft continues to be more than capable of offering many years of excellent service to its owner. Interestingly, Camber has experienced first-hand a substantially increased level of interest in first-time buyers seeking not only to acquire an aircraft, but in many cases a pre-owned large-cabin aircraft to be customised to reflect their needs and sense of style.

We see tremendous potential in updating pre-owned jets in a very cost-effective way. Refurbishing these aircraft takes significantly less time and costs a fraction of the price of purchasing and outfitting a new aircraft. With a fresh livery and new interior, it is difficult to differentiate a well-executed refurbished aircraft from a newly outfitted one – important points to consider for the owners contemplating replacing their current jet and for new entrants contemplating their first aircraft.

Inspections on Embraer Legacy 600 & 650 at ACC COLUMBIA Jet Service At the beginning of 2021, ACC COLUMBIA Jet Service expanded its hangar capacities at Hanover Airport significantly. Apart from hangar 16 with 3,500 sqms we now perform heavy maintenance also in hangar 3 with additional 3,200 sqms. Whereas in hangar 16 mostly Bombardier models are located for all kind of inspections and maintenance, Station Manager Daniel Jatsch primarily takes care of Embraer Legacy aircraft types in hangar 3. Currently, two teams of Certifying Staff and technicians are working under the direction of Station Manager Daniel Jatsch on a 96 month inspection and a 6 plus 12 month inspection. With regard to the 6 plus 12 month inspection, the respective team only has a very short downtime of five days which will of course be released according to the request of our longstanding customer. For this inspection, approx. 300 man hours including further customer tasks, necessary troubleshooting and small repairs are calculated. The team for the 96 month inspection is dealing with a downtime of only 8 weeks including all potential findings. Usually the initial 96 month inspection already takes 8 weeks and further 2 weeks must be estimated for any findings that may occur. During the inspection, all exterior panels must be removed and a fuel tank internal inspection is performed. The landing gear is removed to allow detailed inspection of the structural attachments in the wings and the fuselage. As also the complete cabin is disassembled, the operator uses downtime for a partial interior refurbishment as repair of varnish and refurbishment of the leather passenger seats. Consequently, we also already performed 144 month inspections on Embraer Legacy aircraft which differs from the 96 month inspection mainly in the additional shipment of the landing gear to the manufacturer for overhaul reasons. All other maintenance tasks have to be treated to the same extent. ACC COLUMBIA Jet Service as Part-145 maintenance facility is authorized to perform all kind of maintenance on Embraer Legacy aircraft. Daniel Jatsch is convinced: “Our staff is able to cope with all challenges resulting from special customer requirements due to their expertise, the dedication to their jobs and the general aviation sector. Challenges encourage our teams in all branches and departments to peak performance.” WWW.AVIATIONHEAVEN.COM

Why is it important? There are various importancies for all parties involved but from a airworthiness standpoint it is very important to make sure the paperwork history of the aircraft is complete and the actual documentation (MX Tracking, STC´s, Modifications, Equipment List, etc) is up to date and nothing missing. After the sale is done it can become very hard to obtain missing information and documentation which therefore creates more costs for the new owner.

CAMO - Aircraft Pre-Buy Inspection The practical guide how to get things done! What should be the work scope?

Possible Findings! There could be a long list of findings both technical on the aircraft or airworthiness wise from the paper documentation: Corrosion can be a huge cost factor on older aircraft but not limited to. Missing paperwork could be very timeconsuming when phasing in on an AOC. Modifications that are not approved by the authority in which the aircraft will be registered. Repairs not approved by a Part 21 Organisation or according to SRM. "Please note this is a practical guide and for information only. Please refer to your company procedures and official documents."

This depends widely on the age and maintenance status of the aircraft. A very good start is to have a deep look into the maintenance history and current status together with other relevant documentation. This will help to have a first impression and feeling of what to expect on the physical aircraft. The physical inspection range can go from a check flight and physical inspection to make sure compliance with the reviewed documentation is given, to a full heavy airframe inspection and engine borescope check.
