Revima predicts its future Condor Flugdienst takes flight with Lufthansa Technik
Condor Flugdienst and Lufthansa Technik signed a comprehensive contract for component support of the airline’s Airbus A330neo fleet.
Under the terms of the ten-year agreement, Lufthansa Technik will provide Total Component Support (TCS) for the Airbus A330-900neo aircraft that will join Condor’s fleet in the coming years. For Lufthansa Technik it is the first TCS contract for this modern longhaul type. The contract, which comes into effect on January 1, 2023, covers not only the classic supply of components but also various partspooling and logistics services, including the establishment of a socalled homebase stock at Condor’s operations center at Frankfurt Airport.
“The supply of necessary components for our new aircraft is an important aspect for the service entry and operation of the A330neo. The continued cooperation with Lufthansa Technik AG ensures for us a consistently optimal support according to the highest quality standards
in this area,” said Condor COO and Accountable Manager, Christian Schmitt.
Lufthansa Technik already provides reliable component services for Condor’s other Airbus and Boeing subfleets. The two companies also work
together in many other maintenance, repair and overhaul areas, such as engine and landing gear maintenance. This year Condor also became the first airline customer for Lufthansa Technik’s HeatNow cabin floor heating system.
n Revima, an independent APU and landing gear MRO specialist, announced the deployment of a predictive optimization solution to upgrade its supply chain, in partnership with Lokad.
This technology features probabilistic forecasting and differentiable programming. The goal is to reduce the turn-around-time for APU and landing gear repair and overhaul operations and to optimize inventory costs for spare parts. On the one hand, probabilistic forecasting applied to demand, lead time and scrap rate embraces the very high uncertainty and variability in aviation. On the other hand, differentiable programming allows to automatically extract patterns from complex supply chain processes, as found in the maintenance operations associated with aviation components.
Olivier Legrand, Revima Group President and CEO, said: “Aviation has been promised inventory optimization solutions since I started my career over three decades ago. However, every time, aviation proved too hard: too many parts, too many processes and too little volume. With Lokad, we have finally found a partner that can integrate the aviation expert knowledge of Revima’s teams right into our systems. And its’ AI, as ‘augmented intelligence’ for aviation, combines latest Artificial Intelligence technology with Data Scientists screening the data.”

Go Live! Theater continues to gather crowds
This year’s themes included sustainability, new technology and innovation, digitalisation and consolidation
There is always a great deal to learn from the subject matter experts during their short and exciting case studies and presentations at the Go Live! Theater. It is the key destination to hear free show floor content. From integrated aviation ecosystems to artificial intelligence driven platforms and cargo and lessor market insights, the case studies and presentations were not to be missed features of the exhibition. The first morning on Wednesday 19 October began with Power Sessions from
Aviation Week Network’s own fleets and MRO industry analyst Antoine Fafard. The noon case study from TAP Air Portugal about digital platform technology in technical operations, presented by TAP’s Aircraft Systems Engineering Manager Tiago Cordeiro and Lufthansa Technik Sales Executive Europe Margarida Martini, was followed by Joramco CEO Fraser Currie.
Currie explained how Joramco was undergoing significant transformation and that Dubai Aerospace had taken a substantial share of the company. Annam, Jordan based
Joramco was undertaking an 82,000 square metre expansion, going from 5-6 lines to 17 lines and in three to four years to 27 lines with new hangars. Currie pointed out that 60% of Joramco’s customers were from Europe along with others from Latin America and Asia. Of the European customers, Ryan Air was a new one and its MRO work would take up five lines of parallel maintenance. “We set ourselves on a journey of transformation, people, training, we have our own training academy,” said Currie. As Joramco follows EASA Part 147 for training academy it had to drop the UK firm it used due to Brexit and the UK leaving EASA and had to switch to a non-UK firm.
All this transformation is going on while Joramco also deals with the wider industry issues of spares supply. The lack of seat tracks led to Joramco buying an eight-metre milling bed to ensure older aircraft can have their seat tracks completed. It was the main obstacle to releasing aircraft. And with the Ukraine war, raw material for the milling machine is now an issue.
Just as Currie set out his company’s challenges with materials, Gawain Mundy, Silver Wings Aerospace Director of Engineering, tackled the subject of Alternate Bill of Materials, how to make cost and time savings. Innovative aviation solutions company Wencor also made a presentation, with Chase Harris Vice President for PMA and DER. Harris talked about how Covid meant, inventory burndown, material shortages, labour force dynamics, surging demand, all leading to resource crunch for industry. Harris made the point that Wencor provides options for extending life of parts instead of having to buy new ones. “We look at how to make parts more
serviceable,” Harris said. “We take a finished product that has been used and increase its durability with coatings.” Cost savings and sustainability are key, he added, in considering whether to repair or replace, and gave the example of replacing a latch that is cracking, which may ultimately require a redesign for durability or alternative tougher material choices. Wencor could also offer short term repair solutions while a longer term PMA solution is determined.
The afternoon of the first day also saw the issue of trusted parts discussed by SITA for Aircraft Business Innovation aircraft data management portfolio head, Pierre-Yves Benain. He demonstrated the SITA Trusted Aircrafts Parts Exchange. Later that afternoon, SITA product manager, Dominic Hickey explained how to unlock aircraft data for MRO and developing solutions for tomorrow’s data needs.
Thursday morning saw a presentation about the Aviation Week Information Network and that was followed by Mikheil Khidureli CEO of Enterprise Georgia talking about what the country is doing to encourage the MRO industry there. He gave key figures such as the fact that the World Bank has rated Georgia the seventh easiest country to do business in and the third least tax take with just 9%, 0% value added tax for the MRO industry and more widely, 0% on retained company profits. The country saw 10% economic growth in 2021 and $6.4 billion in foreign direct investment. It also has an association agreement and perspective with the European Union and expects to achieve EU candidacy status soon. Seventy percent of Georgia’s electricity is from renewables. The country has
three airports, Batumi, Kutaisi, Tbilsi, the capital. Khidureli cited the central geography of Georgia, with a five to six hour flight time to the Netherlands and France and the Middle East. The government is targeting narrowbody aircraft for Georgian MRO with a goal of an industry turnover of $2.2 million for line maintenance by 2027. An MRO center for Georgia with four bays for four aircraft is being built.
As the airline industry continues its recovery, solutions to the many challenges can be found at the Go Live! Theater. The expertise is varied with a great in-depth knowledge on show with effective presentations that convey the key points and underlying critical factors to addressing the obstacles industry faces. Reach your core audience with a presentation at the Go Live! Theater. l
Right in the Zones
From the Zones’ pavilions for key specialist sectors to the Zone theater for exhibitors to find their audience, this new approach for 2022 was the solution for all solutions
The Zones Theater saw presentations on new products and solutions from safety service providers, training specialists and hangar builders. A new maintenance repair and overhaul hangar at Berlin Brandenburg Airport was one recent project presented. Schwarzmann aircraft hangars’ project manager, Matej Lozak spoke about this double hangar and how four Airbus A320 can be maintained there. The hangar had to be insulated for its 10,000 square metre floor space and has had a sprinkler system being installed. Lozak also spoke of a hangar in Vienna with an 8050 square metre floor plan. Built in 2019, it has a maximum gable opening for easy aircraft manoeuvring and a concrete firewall between two halves of the hangar. This year’s Zones, the Hangar Equipment Zone, EASA Services Zone and New Exhibitor Showcase Zone, offered a wide variety of products and services. As well as hangar constructers, the Hangar Equipment
Zone has suppliers of specialist equipment such as engine stands, ground support equipment, airframe and engine tooling, docking and access platforms, test equipment, safety equipment and more. One piece of equipment being offered to European customers is GE Aviation’s 360 Foam Wash for engines. Product Manager Matthew Gifford explained that MRO Europe was an opportunity to reach out to new customers. “I’m here to discuss our new foam technology that we use to clean engines and improve their health and efficiency, to save fuel.” The EASA Services Zone is a designated area for Part 21 (Design and Manufacturing), Part 147 (Training) and Part M (CAMO) specialists. One of the exhibitors is Baines Simmons. One of its co-founders, Bob Simmons, was clear why he chose MRO Europe. “I think it is renowned as probably being the biggest trade show for maintenance, repair and overhaul,” said Simmons. He also gave a presentation in the Theater about safety services. Simmons pointed out that regulations in the European Union had changed and also in the UK. This change was
to make Safety Management Systems (SMS) required for organization’s management systems. The EU Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) had introduced the requirement for SMS to integrated, not separate, to management systems. Safety management systems are Part 145.A.200, involving identification of hazards, risk assessments, mitigation, effectiveness verification, continuous learning and improvement. Simmons argued that incorporating safety thinking into all business activities would mean safer workers were more productive because of fewer or no accidents, for example. Another safety related training provider was Dansoft Training Services. Olusegun Johnson told the Zone Theater audience that his company was an EASA approved maintenance training organisation founded in 2019. Dansoft is a company open to collaboration with other organisations under Part-M, Part-145 and Part-147. Another Zone Theater presenter was MSA’s International executive field sales manager, Bertrand Challier. He spoke about the MSA Latchways WinGrip. The WinGrip creates a vacuum between itself and the fuselage or wing of the aircraft creating a stable point from which guard rails or safety ropes can be connected. Maintainers are still falling from wings or through partially dismantled aircraft floors. Roped to a WinGrip, safety is improved. Of the many exhibitors in the Zones, Challier perhaps summed up the value of the show best: “Now we realised that here we have the right key people., the maintenance people, the managers, the operational people who come and have a look at what is new. It’s the quality of the people coming to MRO Europe.” l

Singapore Looking to Make an Impression in Europe
Europe is a vast market with four of the world’s largest economies and Singapore based companies are under no illusion that to find new customers, go to where the customers are
Aviation is a significant part of the 350 billion US dollar gross domestic product of the island of Singapore with its population of just under six million. A number of Singaporean companies took the opportunity to attend MRO Europe and the Singapore pavilion saw a steady flow of interested parties.
“We were introduced to this by the Singapore government organisation, known as Enterprise Singapore,” said Darren Wong Chen Pei, representing Rexadvance Technology, a precision engineering solutions company. “So, through this opportunity
we are trying to step out of Singapore and go to the international markets. This [MRO Europe] is a very good steppingstone for us to eventually enter the European market and this is one of our first trade shows ever since Covid.” Another company of engineers is CW Aero Services. It provides airport systems, tooling and GSE services and has its own engineering department.
“Because we are based in Singapore, we are looking at how we can extend our capabilities to the companies in Europe to see how they can reach people in Asia,” said CW Aero Services GSE and tooling sales manager, Cedric Quey. “Nowadays, customers are looking for technical support, in Asia, or even in sales they are looking for people in Asia who can talk face to face with new customers. For technical support, they want something within a good time, and we are more or less the bridge in between the time differences.”
Another firm on the Singapore pavilion was Aviation Partner and Consulting (APAC). They were there to show the outfit has the capability to develop business in Asia as it is “a distributor for different OEMs as not all the OEMs, especially the small and
medium sized companies, have facilities in Asia,” APAC Managing Director, Fred Hervot explained. APAC sees a lot of interest in Asia because it has been a booming region with 50% of aircraft deliveries. The company was established more than 10 years ago and has helped companies develop their business within Asia through its connections with MROs and airlines.
Another company helping MROs and others to do better business is AMS Decisions, a technical solutions and outsourcing specialist. “The value of being at MRO Europe is to meet all our potential customers which are all the exhibitors around here, we are mainly targeting MRO organisations with our software solutions,” said AMS Decisions Vice President of Business Development, Fabrice Lormois. AMS Decisions was founded by a team of industry experts together with technology experts. “We also want to meet all the airlines who are passing by and looking for new information about software to also improve the experience of their own engineers doing maintenance on aircraft,” Lormois added. The company provides a service that allows the real-time tracking of engineering staff’s experience which issues engineer experience reports for type rating authorization renewals and for the notification of mandatory training.
The island of Singapore might be geographically small and on the other side of the world, but its companies can have an outsized impact through MRO Europe seeking new partners in Asia and new sales in Europe. l
Providing first-class Program and Component MRO solutions for operators worldwide. With our intricate understanding of the total aircraft design and operation, we keep your fleet in the sky, achieving peak reliability of your components.

The importance of select seats and tables, free drinks and a quieter zone where the conversation could flow is not lost on anyone and the VIP Club Lounge is an area open all day for fruitful discussions. The VIP Club Lounge was only open to airlines and aircraft/engine lessor VIPs during the MRO Europe exhibition hours of Wednesday 9.30am to 5.30pm and Thursday 9.30am to 3pm. Summit Aerospace saw the value of such a venue and have been the VIP Club Lounge
sponsor for MRO Europe 2021 and 2022 and will be again for 2023 when the show returns to Amsterdam. Summit aims to build strong relationships and develop a partnership approach and where could be more appropriate to do this than in hosting a VIP Club Lounge.
In the VIP Club Lounge, customers can have a drink and take time to relax or schedule a meeting in a place where there is plenty of footfall. What is better than open and honest conversation in the relaxed surroundings of a VIP Club Lounge? The concept of the VIP Club Lounge tallies with Summit’s values. Summit aims to be straight forward in its communications and encourages all of its employees to be approachable at all times. Whether it is a VIP Club Lounge or an in-person office meeting, Summit staff consult widely and regularly to ensure they continue to meet the customers’ ever-changing needs.
Summit Aerospace serves more than one hundred clients a year worldwide. They help their customers reduce repair
and overhaul maintenance cost with innovative solutions. Summit employees are dedicated to continuously improving the quality, value and above all, the safety of all the services for all the customers. Those introductions that can be had in a VIP Club Lounge. Summit Aerospace is about working together, a business that is a people business, talking to the customers and more importantly listening to the customers. Summit conducts regular employee surveys and welcome the views of its staff, just as it welcomes the views of the VIPs who get to experience the VIP Club Lounge.
Aim high is another Summit value, tempered by knowing that it is key to always being realistic about what can be achieved. For Summit, partnering the firm’s companies with its customers is the vision. This is done by creating the best possible experience, thinking of the long-term relationship from the moment the customer decides to put their trust in Summit services. And that can begin at MRO Europe, in the VIP Club Lounge. l

Growth and decarbonisation
A view from Vincent Begon, the recently appointed General Manager of Shell Aviation LubricantsIn 2022, passenger numbers are expected to reach 83% of prepandemic levels. As the industry continues to recover, that means more aircraft will be fuelled and, for us, the priority is keeping them flying safely and efficiently by providing high-performance lubricants.
On the lubricants side of our business, we are investing in strengthening our supply chain with a new grease manufacturing plant and expanding our distribution network through partnerships in China, India and Latin America.
PRODUCTS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Dependable global supply is important but so too is lubricant performance. We are a supplier with high-quality products for all aviation customers, from private pilots to MROs and airlines. All products must meet minimum specifications, but not all approved products are the same.
Let us take AeroShell Turbine Oil 560 as an example. Operating temperatures have soared, but some airlines are still using standard performance (STD) turbine oils. This means accepting coking, which may occasionally lead to expensive flight cancellations. High thermal stability (HTS) oils offer less coking and while some do not perform well with seals, that is not true for all HTS oils.
In tests, a competitor’s HTS oil exhibited nearly twice the swelling rate of AeroShell Turbine Oil 560, which has the correct rates to create a stable, tight seal. Other tests
confirm AeroShell Turbine Oil 560’s low coking performance, and these results are backed by strip-down and borescope inspections.
Low coking means better reliability and lower maintenance costs, and good seal performance helps to reduce leaking; one customer reported a 10–15% reduction in oil consumption after switching to AeroShell Turbine Oil 560.
This proven performance has led to AeroShell Turbine Oil 560 being the only HTS oil approved for CFM56 engines and not listed as causing seal issues. It is also the only HTS oil approved for use in Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6 engines. A customer
using the oil in a PT6A-67P-powered Pilatus PC12-47 (NG) aircraft extended the time between overhaul from 3,000 to 5,000 hours, saving the airline $56 per engine flying hour.
We have also been investing in grease approvals. To avoid incompatibility issues, we created AeroShell Grease 58 for wheel bearings, built on the same lithiumcomplex technology as AeroShell Greases 33 and 64. AeroShell Grease 58 also helps to extend bearing and grease life compared with MILPRF-81322 specification greases. In addition to financial savings, reducing oil consumption and extending grease life have modest emissions reduction benefits.
WORKING TOGETHER TO DECARBONISE AVIATION
At Shell, our target is to become a netzero emissions energy business by 2050. We are working closely with new and existing customers and others to reduce carbon emissions, sector by sector. However, this is particularly challenging in sectors like aviation, where emissions reduction is hard to achieve.
“MRO [Europe] is a brilliant event for us because after two years of virtual work due to COVID, we are finally back and in front of our partners here.”
Vincent Begon, General Manager, Shell Aviation LubricantsIn 2021, IATA reported record SAF production but still amounting to just 0.04% of global aviation fuel production. At Shell, we aim to have at least 10% of our global aviation fuel sales as SAF by 2030. To achieve this, we are building our SAF production capacity, investing in promising technologies to accelerate new production pathways, and collaborating with customers and partners to
A number 5 bearing housing from a CFM56 7B after 23,000 hours and 9,000 cycles since its last overhaul, showing that coking need not be accepted as normal
increase SAF supply and demand. For example, we are building one of Europe’s largest biofuels facilities at our Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam with an 820,000-tonnes-a-year production
capacity expected from 2024.
One of our priorities is collaboration across the value chain to unlock demand. In August 2022, Shell signed a landmark memorandum of understanding with Lufthansa over a potential purchase agreement which could deliver up to 1.8 million tonnes of SAF over seven years, starting in 2024.
Business travel is uniquely positioned to play a role in scaling SAF demand. This is why we have teamed up with Accenture, American Express Global Business Travel and Energy Web Foundation to launch Avelia, one of the world’s first blockchain-powered SAF book-andclaim platforms. This solution would give corporations the ability to buy SAF and receive its environmental benefits regardless of their geographic location.
FUEL AND LUBRICANT PARTNER OF CHOICE
The next 30 years, towards 2050, will see aviation grow while substantially reducing carbon emissions, and Shell Aviation is already offering decarbonisation solutions for airlines and MROs. For more than a century, we have delivered in a spirit of collaboration, innovation and problem solving, from helping to develop the jet engine to advancing lubricant technologies to developing new digital SAF book-and-claim solutions. We aim to be the partner of choice as growth returns and customers act on their decarbonisation ambitions. l
Bridging the gap
Thanks to a broader MRO service, Moog has become a total solutions provider
Moog’s Aircraft sector has been designing, manufacturing and integrating precision motion control products and systems for commercial aircraft for more than 70 years. In that time, Moog has established a reputation for delivering innovative solutions for the most challenging motion control applications, including flight, engine and auxiliary controls. As a result, Moog has become a key supplier to the world’s leading aircraft manufacturers, including Boeing, Airbus and Lockheed Martin. Its hardware is positioned on virtually every platform in the marketplace While partnerships with airframers have long been its history, Moog’s focus is very much on the airline customers who require enhanced operational support from its program suppliers and
OEMs. The airlines today are facing challenges with manpower shortages and supply chain issues impeding their ability to make essential aircraft operational decisions efficiently and effectively. Airline companies, particularly larger operators, find it challenging to navigate all the product complexities on their aircraft, limiting their ability to problem-solve, troubleshoot and proactively manage after-market demands.
To support airline companies, Moog has transitioned to a total solutions provider role for its airline customers with a broader MRO service. Through this service, Moog can help bridge the gap by acting as a critical link between its airline customer and the suppliers/OEMs, and adding additional services to its ‘Moog Total Support’ program (MTS).
Moog has started developing further

MRO capabilities internally and with its partners to provide enhanced services that the airline industry is demanding. Its focus goes beyond flight control expertise into other motion and fluid
control components. Moog aims to specialize in several ATA chapters, thus providing a niche product support solution for customers.
With its OEM expertise and market
influence, Moog’s new product support solution goes beyond the typical integrated service offering. It now provides a one-stop solution for airframe and engine components that includes flight hour agreements, rotable pooling, component exchanges and repair management services across multiple ATA chapters. The demand for this type of service has grown and Moog is uniquely positioned to understand and support its customers’ needs.
Moog’s culture and commitment to exceeding its customers’ expectations results in innovative solutions to customer problems delivered by a trustworthy and dedicated organization. Please reach out to discuss how Moog can solve your commercial after-market service challenges. l
Connecting East to West
Agateway between East and West, Georgia is a politically stable investment destination with sound macroeconomic environment, backed by prudent fiscal, monetary and financial policies with low and fair taxation for business including aerospace investors with maintenance, repair and overhaul activities.
Georgia has developed a feasibility study for an MRO project in the country. With a market of 5,395 aircraft that can be sought for MRO facilities in Georgia the feasibility study has shown positive results. A four bay, 9,000 square meter hangar, will need an investment of $32 million to be constructed. It is designed for four narrowbody aircraft to be maintained at the same time. The aim is to take 3% of this 5,395 aircraft market share and serve 162 aircraft from Europe and the Middle East. In accordance with the feasibility study, the payback period for the project is eight years and the IRR stands at 12%. Invest In Georgia plays the role of moderator between foreign investors and the Government of Georgia, ensuring that the investor gets different types of updated information and has a means of effective communication with the Government bodies.
Georgia has an Association Agreement with the European Union, establishing a long-term foundation for EU-Georgia’s political association and economic integration. Georgia and the European Community signed a Common Aviation Area Agreement on 2 December 2010.
This agreement provides a modern framework and high standards for a wide range of aviation issues, such as passenger rights, air traffic management, economic regulation, competition issues or social aspects. Today, Georgia has a young, skilled and competitively priced
labor force and easy access to materials. It also has centres for customized training which can provide short-term courses per an investor’s request.
In aerospace relevant materials, Georgia is rich in deposits of copper, manganese and lead ore. In addition, some other raw materials such as plastic, steal, aluminium, nickel and lithium are available in neighboring countries with which Georgia has 0% import tax.
With access to markets totalling 2.3 billion people and no Customs Duties, Georgia has a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) with EU.
Georgia provides the shortest transit route between Western Europe and Central Asia. Transit networks running through Georgia can bring goods from China to Europe in 10-15 days instead of 45 days along traditional routes.
For its geographical position, access to markets, highly trained cost competitive labour force, attractive business policies and taxation, Georgia is a desirable place to locate aviation businesses and Invest In Georgia is here to help you make the most of this business friendly country. l
