GREVIT 200 SL IN THE PROTECTION AND STORAGE OF ROOT VEGETABLES IN CONVENTIONAL, INTEGRATED AND ORGANIC PRODUCTION
Poland’s membership of the European Union has enabled vegetable producers to increase production, most of which has been destined for export. However, in order to meet the requirements of foreign consumers, and more and more often also of those at home, Polish producers are forced to submit their produce to new quality control systems. This makes the producers give up using many chemical plant protection products. For that reason, the integrated method of production is becoming more and more popular with vegetable growers. It allows them to obtain high yields of high quality products. The method is based on minimizing the use of mineral fertilizers and chemical plant protection products while at the same time making full use of agrotechnical and technological elements. The integrated method requires producers to possess a lot of professional knowledge in that area and is far more difficult that the conventional method. However, the producers who employ the integrated method of production are eligible to apply for a certificate for their products, which proves that the products are of high quality with respect to both their healthiness and nutritional value. The fact that in Poland many active substances have been withdrawn, and have not been replaced by new ones, thus creating a large gap in the range of plant protection methods, makes it necessary to search for new production-related solutions. One of the successful results of this search is Grevit 200 SL, a natural and completely safe product that gives good and effective solutions in the integrated production of root vegetables.
Grevit 200 SL does not require a waiting period or a prevention period, and does not persist in the treated plants, thus being completely safe for people, animals, beneficial insects and the environment. It can be used at any stage of both commercial and amateur production of vegetables. Grevit 200 SL makes it possible to use unique solutions recommended for pre- and post-harvest protection of root vegetables, brassica (cabbage-like) vegetables and lettuce. Grevit 200 SL has been authorized for use in ecological agriculture: Certificate No. BRŚOR-EKOL-001/2005 of 3 March 2005.
GREVIT 200 SL
Grevit 200 SL is the first, unique solution in controlling bacterial and fungal diseases that acts on contact and can be used for both curative and preventive treatments. It also effectively supports the defence system of plants by helping to prevent infection hotspots from developing.

The production of carrot, parsley, parsnip and red beet starts with the preparation and conditioning of seeds by soaking them for a short period of time (2 minutes) in a 0.5% solution of Grevit 200 SL. In this way, the crops of carrot, parsley, parsnip and red beet will be protected against decay diseases caused by a variety of pathogenic fungi and bacteria that may be carried by the seeds.
THE MOST COMMON DISEASES OF CARROT PREVENTION AND CONTROL The carrot is one of the most valuable vegetables and has great importance in nutrition. The use of Grevit 200 SL ensures safe production of high quality carrots, which is extremely important in the production of juices and foodstuffs for babies and children, as well as for fresh consumption (e.g. as salads).
POWDERY MILDEW
Symptoms of powdery mildew on carrot leaves.
GREVIT 200 SL
SYMPTOMS – a thick white coating develops on leaves and leaf stalks, then the leaves wither away. This happens in the second half of summer during periods of dry and warm weather with occasional showers. CONTROL MEASURES – spray carrot plants with Grevit 200 SL at a rate of 1.5 litres in the recommended volume of 700 litres of water per hectare. The first treatment should be carried out as soon as the first symptoms of the disease have been noticed. Carry out 2–3 treatments during the vegetative season every 7–14 days depending on the risk of the disease to plants.

BACTERIAL BLIGHT OF CARROT SYMPTOMS – irregular lesions, dark-brown to black in colour, become visible at leaf edges, gradually spreading over the entire leaf surface and leaf stalks. When the infection is severe, the leaves wither (turn black). The disease occurs during periods of warm weather and high air humidity, and on plantations irrigated with sprinklers. CONTROL MEASURES – sow only healthy and well-prepared seeds. Do not use sprinkler irrigation in hot weather. When the first symptoms of the disease appear, spray the plants with Grevit 200 SL 2–3 times every 7–10 days at a rate of 1.5 litres in the recommended volume of 700 litres of water per hectare. The symptoms of this bacteriosis may be misdiagnosed as ALTERNARIA LEAF BLIGHT (ALTERNARIOSIS)
SYMPTOMS – irregular lesions, dark-brown to black in colour with a whitish or reddish centre, appear at leaf edges and on leaf stalks. When the infection is severe, the leaves wither away. Hollow, dark-brown to black lesions appear on the roots. CONTROL MEASURES – plants need to be treated as soon as the first symptoms of the disease appear, and usually until harvest time. Carry out spray treatments with Grevit 200 SL 2–3 times every 7–10 days at a rate of 1.5 litres in the recommended volume of 700 litres of water per hectare. Repeat the treatments if infection is severe. It is also recommended to use Grevit 200 SL in a mixture with the fungicide Amistar 250 SC at full dose, or alternately with the fungicide Amistar 250 SC (0.8 l/ha with the recommended volume of water of 700 l/ha). SYMPTOMS – small brownish-grey lesions appear on leaves and leaf stalks, gradually becoming darker. The leaves gradually wither away (from the bottom up). CONTROL MEASURES – spray with Grevit 200 SL as soon as the first symptoms of the disease have been noticed, 2–3 times every 7–10 days at a dose of 1.5 litres in 700 litres of water per hectare. PRE-HARVEST PROTECTION (CLAMP ROT, BACTERIAL SOFT ROT, BACTERIAL ROT OF ROOT TIPS, SEPTORIA BLIGHT OF CELERY) AND POST-HARVEST PROTECTION (CLAMP ROT, BACTERIAL ROT) SYMPTOMS – rotting is caused by many infection-related factors. Diseased tissues change colour to dark brown or black, and their surface is covered with mycelium of varying colour (depending on the pathogen). CONTROL MEASURES – spray with Grevit 200 SL at a dose of 1.5 l in 700 l of water per ha, 1–2 times every 7 days before harvest, with the last treatment to be carried out 1–2 days before the harvest. Use the product alternately with other fungicides recommended for celery protection. The product is also recommended for post-harvest treatment of celery roots at a concentration of 0.1–0.2% (100–200 ml of the product in 100 l of water) against diseases occurring in storage. The recommended volume of water is 1 litre per 10 kg of celery roots. The roots should be soaked in the solution for 1–2 minutes and then dried before being placed in a storehouse or a clamp.
THE MOST COMMON DISEASES OF RED BEET PREVENTION AND CONTROL
POWDERY MILDEW SYMPTOMS – a white, floury coating appears on leaves. The disease usually occurs in the second half of summer during periods of dry and hot weather. CONTROL MEASURES – spray the plants with Grevit 200 SL as soon as the first symptoms of the disease have appeared and repeat the treatments every 7–10 days depending on the risk to plants. CERCOSPORA LEAF SPOT SYMPTOMS – the disease appears soon after plants have sprouted. Roundish, dark brown lesions, surrounded with a red border, appear on the leaves. When the disease intensifies, complete withering of the affected leaves can occur. CONTROL MEASURES – spray the plants with Grevit 200 SL at a rate of 1.5 litres in 400-600 litres of water per hectare, as a preventive measure 2–3 times every 7 days starting from the cotyledon stage, or when the first symptoms of the disease appear, and later every 7–10 days, but only as the need arises.
