INVESTING for the future

When I look back on the experiences of the past year, I am reminded of the resolve of the Avon Old Farms community and the deep appreciation for traditions that have been sorely missed over the past few years—traditions and experiences brought to life through the generosity of the alumni, parents, grandparents, friends, faculty, and staff who have ensured Avon remains the preeminent all-boys school in the country. The fiscal success of the school reflects your support of our mission and your belief in the exceptional educational opportunities Avon provides.

As an overview, I am pleased to share that because of our generous community, we met our fiscal-year goal and raised $4.5 million. I am excited about what the future holds for Avon Old Farms; the loyal support of our community will sustain us in the years ahead. Only because of your steadfast support were we able to keep the community safe while continuing to provide superior academic programming, campus enhancements, enriched student experiences, increased financial aid, and support for faculty development.

Gilman W. Ordway ’44, GP’04, ’06, ’10, a dedicated philanthropic supporter of Avon, passed away on May 30. He was the father of former Board of Directors member Kitty Ordway P’04 and a grandparent to three Avonians. At Avon, Gil helped provide cutting-edge science and technology classrooms for Avon students in the building, which now proudly carries his name: the Ordway Science and Technology Center. He also endowed Avon’s environmental science and music appreciation programs. Gil’s passion for art led to the expansion of the Ordway Art Gallery which is now housed in the Brown Student Center. For his work on behalf of Avon, Gil previously received the Alumni Order of Old Farms and the Adams Medal.

I hope to see many of you on campus for Homecoming on November 12, on December 16 for the fall sports competitions, and the Hockey Classic in December as well as many alumni gatherings across the country.

Thank you for your investment in Avon Old Farms and our current and future students.

4 2021–2022 REPORT OF ANNUAL GIVING

This is where everything began, where I found myself, my purpose, and my people. It was on this campus where I witnessed the power of brotherhood, and the integrity of a community of mentors and students growing together. This is where I took a leap, to throw myself into the community, to be engaged with everything that is going on, and to become a part of this larger world…

“This is the time when a glorious class of men reaches the terminal of their journeys at this institution and steps separately into the unknown world. I have been so touched by all the well wishes that I’ve received over the past few days. But today, it’s my turn to say thanks. Whether we have seen eye-to-eye or rarely agreed at all, my conversations with you—my peers and mentors— both on and off campus, have enlightened me, inspired me, and shaped me into who I am today. And everyday, I have learned from you. You made me a better scholar, and you made me a better person.

Commencement 2022

On Sunday, May 29, the Class of 2022 celebrated their graduation from Avon Old Farms School in true Avonian fashion—with the traditional pomp and circumstance loved by generations of Avon men. We were excited that the underclassmen were able to participate this year to properly send off the seniors as they made their way across the stage set up on the Village Green in front of the Head of School’s house.

“After three years as Head of School, I was able to celebrate the class of 2022 on the Village Green under sunny skies for Avon’s 88th Commencement ceremonies,” says Jim Detora. “I have eagerly awaited the traditional pomp and circumstance that happens only when Mother Nature cooperates, and this year did not disappoint. It was a bittersweet moment as the boys collected their diplomas knowing their time at AOF had come to an end, but a bright future awaits. I wish the entire class of 2022 the best as they start college in the fall.”

Campus Upgrades

Every summer, the Avon Old Farms first-rate facilities department takes advantage of a quiet campus to make necessary repairs and improvements.

This year has been no exception, with upgrades taking place all over, from the top of the Diogenes roof to the underground tunnels that house the school’s electrical systems and other utilities.

Avon Old Farms Founder Theo date Pope Riddle was wise enough to install these tunnels long before underground wiring was a main stream practice. Being nearly 100

years old, however, the tunnels were in need of repair.

Director of Facilities Glenn Wilcox said the work would improve drainage and prevent water damage to the tunnels. The tunnel repairs are a four-year project that were completed by summer’s end.

“It will all be completed, and nobody will know any work was done because it’s all underground,” Wilcox said.

Another four-year project that will wrap up by the end of the summer is the replacement of all dormitory windows in the Quad. The windows in Diogenes, Pelican, and Eagle

dormitories were replaced prior to this year, with only Elephant needing to be completed this summer.

While multiple four-year projects are finishing up this year, another is just beginning. Full upgrades of the dormitory buildings began this summer with the Diogenes Dormitory. The dorm rooms, bathrooms, and first-floor classrooms are all being renovated as part of this project, and a full roof replacement will cap the effort.

“It was just time for a significant upgrade to make them more appeal ing and more functional,” Wilcox

10 2021–2022 REPORT OF ANNUAL GIVING SUMMER 2022

said. “The dorms will still have that Old Farms feel, but will give the boys more space in their rooms.”

Diogenes will be ready before students return to campus in the fall, with the next three dormitories set to be completed over the next few years.

Other projects around campus include replacing the heating and air-conditioning units in the Refectory with more energy-efficient models, and a rearrangement of the Wachter Post Office.

“We modified the mail room to better fit today’s environment,” Wilcox said.

The Avonian // SUMMER 2 022 11

When the mail room was originally designed, paper mail was much more popular than packages, but that has reversed in recent years, Wilcox explained.

The size of the school store, commonly known as the Hawk’s Nest, will be increased this summer as well.

“That’s being done so the school store can better serve the students,” Wilcox said.

Manager of the school store Lara Doyle P ’12,’14 said she is very excited about the expansion.

“We currently have very little area to display our clothing and gift items, and now we will be able to have permanent displays for all of the things we carry,” Doyle explained. “I know that our students and families will be very happy to have more access to these items.”

The student center will also be receiving a refresher this summer, with the addition of new workspaces, updated furniture, and a new tv social space on the lower level.

Many projects this summer involve the school’s athletics facilities.

Major mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance are underway at the Jennings-Fairchild Arena, which houses the famous John T. Gardner ice hockey rink. That work will wrap up before the end of July.

The most substantial upgrades this summer are taking place on Ryan Field and the Gregg Linburg ’87 Memorial Track that surrounds it.

Ryan Field is the primary field used for all varsity football and lacrosse home games. Crews have begun installation of a brand-new turf field featuring customized

12 2021–2022 REPORT OF ANNUAL GIVING

on-field colors and lettering. A new and improved scoreboard will be installed to accompany the new field.

The track surrounding the field, which is utilized by the school’s track-and-field athletes, is also being replaced.

Outdoor stadium lighting will

surround the field and run along the pathway from campus to the field.

“It’s going to look phenomenal when it’s done,” Wilcox said.

The nine Globe Tennis Founda tion Tennis Courts are also being replaced. The existing courts have developed cracks and other evidence

of wear and tear over the years.

“That one’s weather dependent,” Wilcox said.

The work is necessary to maintain the beauty and high-quality infra structure that Avon Old Farms has been known for since its founding.

Sports Roundup

Sportsmanship is one of the four core values at Avon Old Farms School. The idea that the way a person responds to victories and defeats is part of what defines the character of a man is instilled in Old Farms students.

The school is renowned around the world for the success of its athletic programs, and this past year was no exception. Below is an encapsulation of just a few highlights from our sports teams this past year.

In his first season as the Kevin J. Driscoll ’72 Head Football Coach, Jon Wholley led the Varsity Football team to its first-ever NEPSAC bowl game

title. Fittingly, it came in the Kevin Driscoll Bowl.

“It’s the first time we won a NEPSAC Bowl,” Director of Athletics Geoff Barlow ’98 said. “It was good to finally check that off.”

It was the Winged Beaver’s sixth bowl game appearance. The football team finished the season as joint winners of the Founders League as well.

The famous AOF hockey program was once again crowned champions of the Founders League and the Housatonic League.

They made an admirable run in the NEPSAC playoff tournament, entering as a two-seed, and finished the season

with an impressive 24-3 record.

The school’s Varsity Squash team entered the U.S. High School Team Squash Championship Tournament as the number-one seed in the fourth division, and brought home the title after beating Westminster School 4-3 in the final.

Shomari Wiltshire ’22, Adham Nassar ’22, Thomas Baldini ’23, and Charles Friedman ’24 all went undefeated through the entire tournament.

Both the Varsity Baseball and Varsity Lacrosse teams reached the final of the first-ever Founders League playoff tournament for either

2021-2022
14 2021–2022 REPORT OF ANNUAL GIVING

sport, and Varsity Soccer reached the quarterfinals of the NEPSAC playoffs in Head Coach Carl Stensland’s first season not affected by COVID-19.

“Our soccer coach has only been here for a short time, this was his first normal season,” Barlow said. “So, it’s really exciting going forward.”

Athletes participating in cross country, track-and-field, swimming, wrestling, basketball, and tennis all put up great performances through out the season as well.

A herd of students attended every sporting event to cheer on their brothers, which spurred many to success. Of all the athletic programs that participated in the 2021–22 season, it was the Varsity Golf team that stood out.

They were the winners of the Founders League, the Coppola Cup, and placed second at the Kingswood Invitational. They placed first in the Western New England Prep Invita tional, finishing four strokes ahead of the second-place Brunswick Bruins. AOF’s golfers also took home the Suffield Invitational trophy, beating out nine other elite teams. All of this success came in Head Coach James Reece’s first season.

“Jamie Reece in his first year as head coach did a really good job,” Barlow said.

Coach Reece expressed his praise for team captain Bennett Masterson ’22 and the rest of the varsity squad: Finn McHugh ’23, Drew Fitting ’24, Peter Crowe ’23, Anthony Picano ’22, Baker

O’Leary ’23, Winn Brichowski ’22, Chuck Blanchard ’24, and Ben Hole ’22.

“I am very proud of this team and our strong record, but more impor tantly each one of these boys understands that golf is about more than executing shots and posting low scores. It involves showing integrity, respect, sportsmanship, and perse verance,” Reece said.

Several Avonians will continue to uphold the value of sportsmanship as they matriculate to institutions of higher learning, with more than 40 graduates committed to playing sports in college.

Meanwhile, our wonderful coaches have been spending the summer recruiting and planning for another successful season.

WITH Gratitude

The Avon Old Farms’ advancement team is grateful to Avonians, families, friends, and other members of our passionate community. As I reflect on the past year, I realize we have much to be thankful for:

• The academic and student life programming continues to evaluate, improve, and evolve to best meet the needs of boys today yet embrace those traditions that are an integral part of the AOF culture.

• As we adapt to a world with COVID, alumni, parents, and other donors are engaging—electronically and in person—in various ways.

• We returned to holding events both on and off campus, including Grandparents Day, Homecoming, Avon Today (for accepted students and their families), and Reunion Weekend.

• An ever-increasing number of alumni use the alumni network (avonoldfarmsalumni.com) and the dedicated alumni social media pages.

• We have begun planning the AOF centennial—an incredible milestone event for a school and community that already has a rich history and an amazing story.

• The myriad physical plant updates include replacing the roof of and updating Diogenes Dormitory, replacing the Linburg Track surface, replacing the nine Globe Foundation Tennis Courts and the turf field surface, and upgrading the lighting at Ryan Field.

• AOF honored two coaching legends: we named the John Gardner ice rink and established the Kevin Driscoll ’72 Brotherhood Scholarship.

• AOF volunteerism has never been stronger! The Board of Directors, led by Glenn Sieber P’17, is active and engaged; the National Council adopted and enacted a committee structure that supports enrollment, fund raising, and alumni engagement; and the Parents of Avon were instrumental in building back the parent community as the country emerges from COVID.

• This fall the school will be full—the fourth year in a row—in no small part because of the legacy applicants and referrals from alumni, parents, grandparents, guardians, and friends.

I also want to share a quick note about this year’s reunion. AOF’s first on-campus Reunion Weekend in three years was a huge success! Attendance was strong—more than 260 Avonians returned to campus. People shared wonderful remembrances at the service for George M. Trautman H’98, P’75, P’81, P’82, GP’03 on Friday and the alumni memorial on Saturday. The school also honored Dr. Andreas Zavitsas ’55 and Mr. Strat Dennis ’00 with Distinguished Alumni Awards. The reunion occurred after graduation, so the school hosted all alumni reunion events and dinners on campus. One alum shared this with me: “Don’t change this format! I loved that we were able to connect here, on campus, a place that means so much to each of us.”

On a related note, I am happy to report that based on alumni survey feedback, next year’s Reunion Weekend will immediately follow graduation, June 2–4, 2023. There are two important related details: ALL alumni are invited to attend reunion every year; Homecoming will be held November 12, 2022, with the home football game under the lights! Stay tuned for more details.

As AOF continues to return to in-person events, be on the lookout for announcements about events in the Washington, D.C., area; New York City; Boston; Jupiter, FL; Charlotte, NC; Atlanta, GA; and London, England.

As you can see, AOF has much to be thankful for. I would be remiss if I didn’t express my gratitude for the dedication and hard work—much of which happens behind the scenes—of the institutional advancement team. Members continue to work tirelessly with the AOF community, and the accomplishments listed above can be directly attributed to the AOF community’s generosity and passion in supporting the school and, ultimately, the students fortunate enough to call Mrs. Riddle’s campus home.

Thank you for all you did to support Avon Old Farms School this past year. I am looking forward to the start of a new academic year and everything we will do together to keep the Brotherhood strong.

Reunion Weekend is an opportunity for our alumni to reconnect with each other, and with the place that developed them into Men of Avon.

This past June, more than 250 alumni returned to campus to celebrate the first in-person Reunion Weekend since 2019.

The weekend was filled with Avonians reminisc ing and reconnecting, exploring old dormitories and classrooms, and hanging out in familiar places like the Nimrod Cabin.

Other programming included honoring Seth Mendell ’52 at his 70th reunion and a celebration of life for former Headmaster George R. Trautman H ’98, P ’75, ’81, ’82, GP ’03.

For anyone that missed the reunion, we look forward to seeing you at a future reunion!

BLUE BLAZER IS BACK

After two years without a parent gathering or fundraiser, the Parents of Avon were finally able to treat our parent community to a festive evening of mingling and bidding at The Blue Blazer this past April.

Thank you to all of the parents that joined us! The event was a smashing success with monies raised for faculty wish list projects and the Outreach Program. Guests packed into the Refectory to enjoy creative food stations and danced the night away to a live band.

It was a lovely evening celebrating our amazing parent community, and we can’t wait to host the next one! We hope to see all our new and returning parents at the 2023 Blue Blazer event on April 22.

GRANDPARENTS AND GRANDFRIENDS DAY REVIEW

Grandparents and Grandfriends Day at Avon Old Farms is an annual tradition among the most cherished by the boys and their loved ones. On that festive day, AOF welcomes family and friends to campus to share in their grandson’s experience as a boy of Avon.

The day begins in our unique Riddle Refectory. Students and attendees reunite to enjoy breakfast with one another before a day filled with activities including an opportunity to attend classes, listen to a welcome from the Head of School, experience performances from our world-class choral and band, all while touring Theodate Pope Riddle’s beautiful campus. The day concludes with a delicious lunch before the boys head out to various sport competitions.

This past Grandparents and Grandfriends Day was attended by close to 300 visitors, some traveling from as far away as California!

Avon Old Farms students enjoy many memorable traditions, but during this one, the smiles and laughter light up the campus. Those who visited this past year said the event is one not to miss.

The next chance to attend the event will be Wednesday, September 28, so start planning your trip soon!

The Avonian // SUMMER 2 022 55

COMMITTED to the Future

Isincerely hope everyone is enjoying a relaxing and peaceful summer with family and friends. Despite ongoing economic and health challenges throughout the 2021–22 school year, Avon Old Farms School continues to shine and prosper. The Board of Directors remains very appreciative of Head of School Jim Detora’s tireless efforts. He, his administrative team, and the faculty persist in maintaining AOF’s recognition as one of the best indepen dent boys’ schools in the country.

Over the last year, the board made some major commit ments in the best interests of the school and the students. We spent substantial time working with Dr. Trevor Stern to revisit and update our strategic plan. The 2022 plan builds on the foundations set between 2017–21 and establishes new and innovative goals and objectives as well as measur able benchmarks and financial parameters. The plan outlines a clear direction for Avon Old Farms School through 2027. It is financially prudent and supports the Avon Old Farms mission—to help boys who learn together in an inclusive, time-honored community defined by academic, athletic, and creative excellence grow into men of strong moral character. The school’s core values of scholarship, sportsmanship, integrity, and brotherhood are at the core of all the plan’s recommendations and initia tives. The planned curricular, co-curricular, and physical plant ambitions for the future will necessitate funding through capital investments and the successful completion of the upcoming centennial capital campaign.

The board spent substantial time and effort working with CFO Bob Orenstein to restructure the school’s debt burden for a better long-term guaranteed interest rate and more flexibility regarding debt liquidation. We used the debt restructuring to help fund substantial upgrades to all four of the quad dormitories over the next four years, beginning with the Diogenes Dormitory this summer. The dorm rooms, hallways, bathrooms, and first floor class rooms in all four dormitories will all be substantially upgraded and refurbished as a result of this project. Moreover, all four quad dormitories will have their roofs replaced. The board agreed to use some surplus funds to

authorize upgrades in the best interests of the school’s athletic program, including installation of a brand-new turf field for Ryan Field, featuring customized on-field colors and lettering, and outdoor stadium lighting. We also decided to replace the Gregg Linburg ’87 Memorial Track that surrounds Ryan Field as well as the nine Globe Tennis Foundation tennis courts with brand-new courts.

None of these projects would be possible without your continued financial support. As you may be aware, though tuition continues to rise (although we are doing our best to minimize the annual increases), tuition dollars alone are not enough to cover our annual expenses—certainly not significant projects such as those I mention above.

Accordingly, your contributions to our Annual Fund are so very critical to enabling us to make critical investments in the best interest of our students.

I wanted to take a moment to recognize and acknowl edge a tremendous Avonian and friend of Avon Old Farms School whom we lost in May—Gil Ordway. Gil was an extraordinary man who lived an incredibly successful and impactful life. He was a lifelong friend and generous supporter of Avon Old Farms School. In addition to numerous other programs, the Ordways provided the lead gift for our science and technology center, and they have provided endowments supporting our environmental science and music programs. In addition to Marge, his wife of 50 years, Gil is survived by his daughters Kitty and Gigi and his son Griffin, as well as six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. We will miss Gil and always remember his positive impact on Avon Old Farms.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I extend a sincere, heartfelt thank-you to everyone who continues to make Avon Old Farms School a philanthropic priority. We greatly appreciate your support and do our best to ensure your dollars have the greatest positive impact on our boys and our school.

Aspirando et perseverando!
