AmericAn heroes honored & remembered
A traveling tribute that honors all who served and are serving for public safety, including the military, police and firefighters, will be on the North Olympic Peninsula from Sept. 28 through Oct. 2. The American Veterans Traveling Tribute, or AVTT, is a veteran-owned project that travels the nation to provide a forum for communities to honor, respect and remember men and women who serve and have served. AVTT pays specific tribute to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their country. The traveling tribute — whose centerpiece is an 80 percent scale version of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. — will be on the North Olympic Peninsula Sept. 28 through Oct. 2. The traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall replica is 370 feet in length. It lists the name of every American casualty from the war, etched on its surface, just as the original. The memorial is eight feet tall at its apex and is the largest wall replica traveling the U.S. The wall will be escorted by a more than 150-vehicle-strong motor caravan, mostly comprised of veteran motorcycle clubs from across the country and Canada, from 7 Cedars Casino through Port Angeles and back to its docking spot at Olympic Cellars Winery, 255410 Highway 101 in Port Angeles, on Sept. 28. (See the schedule on Page 3 for specific times and details). The mobile nature of the AVTT tribute allows

Beginning in 2012, AVTT will also offer a traveling wall-only exhibit that can be scheduled for events. The tributes are booked on a 5-day event schedule. AVTT is not government sponsored or affiliated. It is self-funded via sponsorship fees, donations and sale of merchandise at events. AVTT is also a part of The Traveling Wall Foundation (TWF), a nonprofit organization. The primary goal of AVTT is to have a community event where as many people as possible are involved and where differences melt away when everyone comes together to celebrate the freedom that was and continues to be given by those who are represented on the tribute. For more information on AVTT, or to make a donation of support, visit www. avtt.org.

brinGinG A tribute to the peninsulA
salute to a fallen warrior Steve Doty, 1947 -2011
Steve Doty, one of the founders of AVTT, was a Vietnam War veteran who was born and raised in Port Angeles. It was his long-held dream to bring the traveling tribute to the North Olympic Peninsula. Steve was in the process of organizing that dream — Peninsula Patriot Days — when he lost his battle with cancer in July. Here’s a letter Steve wrote for inclusion in this program before he passed away.
While it is impossible to capture the essence of a person like Steve Doty with mere words, perhaps the word “patriot” was best meant to describe him. As a founding member of American Veterans Traveling Tribute, he brought his passion and love of our country to a level that we should all strive to achieve. His devotion to the AVTT mission was without equal, no matter the hardship or trials faced with so large a task. He believed in the motto “GodCountry-Freedom” and often stated publicly that our national prayer should be “In God We Trust.” His humility and thoughtfulness permeated his public speaking and his message was powerful. He forged a constant path for all those who defend and protect our country daily by living the virtues of “Honor-Respect-Remember.” His dedication to honoring all who wore the uniform of the United States of America was without equal and was demonstrated on a daily basis. A God-fearing man and devoted to his family, he easily gave of himself to others. He was my friend as well as business partner, and he worked hard at both with zeal and enthusiasm. We shared many words and deeds and I find it difficult to not have him close by the action with me. AVTT will continue the mission he started with a vengeance hopefully equal to his. As the days pass, we will not mourn his passing, but, in the words of General Patton, “Thank God that he lived” and that we had the honor of spending time with him on that part of his journey. Steve, my brother, you will be missed. God Speed.
Peninsula Patriot Days is a time to honor, respect and remember those who served and are serving for our public safety, including the military, police and firemen. We must never forget; we must stand up for America and celebrate our freedom. Peninsula Patriot Days could only be achieved and enjoyed by the dedication and hard work of the many who served and with our public sponsorship support. American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT) projected that it would take a minimum of $15,000 to fund the Peninsula Patriot Days event. Many sponsors around America have raised thousands more, but we wanted to make this event happen with a minimum budget. The event is free to the public and open 24 hours daily. We firmly feel no one should ever pay to honor those who have served to protect our way of life and public safety. AVTT has traveled throughout America for eight years coordinating these events and has visited hundreds of cities from coast to coast. America is abundant with patriots; we have seen the real America But Peninsula Patriot Days will be a first for our community. Peninsula Patriot Days established three levels of sponsorship: Platinum at $10,000 or more, gold at $1000 or more and silver; $500 or more. A local sponsor — 7 Cedars Casino — has stepped forward and offered to be Steve Doty, 1947-2011. a platinum sponsor, with the understanding that the event would not be on their site. It is a rare experience for AVTT that a sponsor is not asking for some sort of business benefit. 7 Cedars Casino based its sponsorship on its desire to give back to the local communities and in support of our veterans and those who served in our military and public service. The Jamestown SKlallam Tribe and 7 Cedars management team is committed to support the communities who support their business. The Tribal leadership continues to honor and express deep appreciation for all our veterans both past and present. They have served and returned home to make America better, as productive citizens, and become a vibrant part of healthy families and communities. The Allen brothers [Ron, Jerry, Jeff and Robin are members of the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe whose 7 Cedars Casino is Peninsula Patriot Days’ main sponsor] remember their father, Bill Allen who was a U.S. Army World War II soldier from 1941-1943, as well as their uncles and many other members of the Jamestown community who also served. AVTT, via the nonprofit Traveling Wall Foundation, will also make a sizable donation to a local veterans organization. We must give back to those who support our mission. Thank you to those who support the AVTT mission. We are honored by their support and encourage everyone to look at the list of sponsors (see Page 7) who have supported the first annual Peninsula Patriot Days. They deserve thanks and community support.
