HOME INVASION PHOTOGRAPHY ETHAN JAMES

Model Dennis @ Ford NY Model Chris @ Major NY

How did you get into fashion photography?

I got into fashion photography as a new way to channel my creative energy that had previously been for writing short fiction and poetry. When I was working on my master's degree, I got burned out writing stories for my thesis and the degree pushed me away from wanting to write for a while. There were students in architecture and art all around me during that time, and after seeing a lot of their work in photography and design I prompted myself to see what I could do with a camera. I took a darkroom photography course in college years before, so I decided to see how digital photography could fit into the creative part of my life. This was when I lived in Texas.

Andrew Buckler designs

When I moved to Tennessee to do my PhD (English - Film and Children's Literature), I pushed myself to work with people and help develop model portfolios. Gradually, I began to pick up clients and shooting became a full-time endeavor. I finished my PhD in August 2010, and now I'm an odd combination of professor, photographer, and

writer. It has been about 5 years, but in that time I have been able to publish my photography and academic writings in magazines and books, and I have just returned from shooting in NY with models from Major, Ford, MC2, and U Model Management. I am definitely happy with all that life has afforded me.

“Film influences my photography

Who or what influences you?

Film influences my photography the most. Many of my photography peers reference past and current photographers that they are inspired by, but I come from a childhood and adulthood of film viewing. I usually credit Pedro Almodovar as one of my greatest film influences, because his work is lush (especially the cinematography) and the storytelling is intricately detailed. I see film frames when I'm shooting, and I

think in terms of movie trailers and poster art; however, strictly speaking photography I can easily say that my friends and fellow photographers (Randy Sewell and Sean Watters) have tremendously influenced my career in the field. If photography was never invented or come across, do you feel society would be less worried about image?

As long as we have mirrors to look at ourselves, and as long as people have eyes to judge, compliment, or analyze others we will worry about image. Photography, television, magazines, and more could disappear or never have been invented, but it is human nature to compare and contrast ourselves against each other. It is not always a bad thing, because difference is beautiful, but it is the way the world turns.

What makes a good photographer?

A good photographer -- only in my opinion lol -- is someone who understands the big picture. When working with people, it is important to see the person, the clothing, the

environment, and have a focus on mood and tone. I see a lot of people take nice photos that are clean, simple, photoshopped with magic, and much more, but if the focus is just on a model's abs or hair or curves (male or female), there is a sense of loss in the photo. I enjoy seeing the work of other photographers when the images are celebrations and not just technical achievements. A lot can be done with editing and lights, but seeing with the eye is the most important aspect to me. What is most important to you, technique or vision?

Vision ranks above all for me. I get asked what kind of camera I use, and I always reply, "my eye." Well, I say that after I first respond, "a kodak disposable." It is great that people have their own styles and wants and needs for certain brands of camera, but everything starts with the eye. Do you prefer the artistic or commercial aspect of fashion?

I'm an art lover. There is nothing wrong with commercial photography at all, but I definitely enjoy the fashion or portrait side of things more. The commercial world is artistic in its own way, as well.

What supermodel would you absolutely love to work with? I don't have a supermodel in

mind to work with; I've thought about this quite a few times. I would, however, enjoy photographing Hilary Swank if I were to shoot a female model and it would be great to work with Gael

Garcia Bernal. Again, I guess my film influences sneak in because these are two people I know would give a great performance in front of the camera. Do you have any projects that we can expect to see this season?

I have been shooting a black & white art/nude series entitled "Couch Surfing" for several months now in hopes it would be picked up by a publishing house for book printing, but nothing has come to fruition yet. That is probably the biggest project I have been working on, but I definitely have a few other things in development that I hope to get out before the summer ends. Keep an eye out for a big group editorial. You have mastered the art of photography, Any advice to young photographers starting out?

Oh, I don't think I've mastered photography by any means lol. I'm working in the field and trying to do better each day. I would definitely consider myself a student of photography, because every shoot brings something new to learn about the art, its technique, or the people in front of the camera. Young photographers should have fun and experiment. Books and tutorials and classes can teach many things, but nothing gives a better understanding of photography than simply doing it -- not doing it the way people say it should be done.

What attracted you to this industry? My love for fashion & beauty is what attracted me to this industry. I’m a very visual person. I think in pictures, so I made art and photography was my creative outlet. I enjoy working with models and capturing magical moments, whether it’s the model’s emotions, an article of clothing, or a painted lip.

In your opinion, what is a fashion photographer? It is someone who can photograph clothing in a unique way instead of simply illustrating the object, someone with a distinct point of view. Anyone can take photographs of clothing, but you must turn that into art.

Do you think photography is a technical art form, that could be learned or a talent you're born with? It is essential to have a good foundation and understand lighting, composition, and other technical aspects. However, you can’t be taught how to be creative. Personally, I think creativity wins over technicality. You need to break the rules sometimes.

What makes photography an art form? Like I said before, having creativity and breaking the rules is what turns an ordinary photograph into a work of art. A different approach to photographing a subject can be a work of art. The way you use lighting in a photograph can have an impact as well. Everyone has a different opinion of what they think art is. Personally, a photograph that inspires me is art.

How would you describe your style when it comes to photography? My style is definitely minimalist and clean. I tend to be hugely inspired by makeup and beauty and I believe that is prevalent in my work. I have a romantic, softer side, but also a hard, edgy, go-against-the-norm kind of side. It’s a good contrast.

Is there an occurrence in theme in your work? People tell me my beauty work is my best work. I try to capture the beauty in everyone. I like to use lighting in such a way to make everyone look beautiful. Also, I have several cameras but I always end up using the same one when I do beauty work.

Do you have a preference when it comes to shooting in-studio or on location? I prefer studio. I like to be in control of lighting and setting up my studio lighting and playing around with that. I’m going to start to do more location work in the next months. It’s good to shake it up every now and then and step out of your comfort zone.

How would you like people to react when they see your work? I would like for them to be inspired!

What do you look for in a fashion model? Unconventional beauty is always great. For fashion, height is essential, as well as someone with charisma and energy. Ultimately, I like to work with models who have a true passion for it. You can tell who loves it and who doesn’t once you get them in front of your lens.

So many people don't know what they will pursue as a career, why become a fashion designer? It’s simple, I love fashion. Even as a little boy I would get my mom to buy me copies of Vogue and I would just pour over the pages. I love how a beautiful dress can transform a woman and instantly let out the confidence that she has inside her. Every person has an individual style and unique take on life so it’s just a blessing to be able to help create art that people can live their lives in. Who do you design for? I design for women that are visionaries. They have a classic sensibility but want a modern edge. I design for women that take an adventurous approach to fashion, they value quality and classic pieces that can be mixed and matched, dressed up or down to work for any occasion. I design for women who know what they want and don’t want to wait for it. What sets you apart from other designers? My understanding of what that modern women wants and needs. She has a busy life, she is always online, or on the phone, working, picking up her kids, meeting her friends, dating… she has a hectic life that never stops and she needs clothes that are going to work with her busy lifestyle. I understand that its not just about creating a style but an entire lifestyle that works with her. Take the organza trimmed blazer in this collection, it looks great paired with the matching skirt for the office or deconstructed with a great pair of skinny jeans for the farmers market on the weekends. What inspires you when formulating a collection? Music is always where it starts for me. This collection was inspired by Ghosts by Little Boots. It has this great beat almost militaristic, but at the same time sounds like a Victorian music box. Living in this song led me to start looking at Victorian fashions and military trends and even Russian art and I started thinking about how that relates to the world around me and the woman that’s going to wear my pieces. The ultimate inspiration came to me as a crossroads between the past and the future. The transition from a decadent past to a future where only the strong survive. There is an air of uncertainty like a deep breath before the plunge into an icy pool. She isn’t sure what the future will hold but she knows she will approach it with a strength and conviction like no other. The fashion industry is a very tough industry to break into, what part of the industry attracts you the most? The creativity! I always have to check myself, but the sky is the limit. If I can envision it, it can be brought to life. I love how diversified the fashion industry has become, it’s not like it was 20 or 30 years ago where you could easily say “pink is out this season” because anything goes all the time. There are so many different designers and points of view out there that you can always express yourself, it’s just about finding what makes you feel comfortable and confident. And that’s good fashion. Ya know this season I may be feeling structured suits with a feminine touch and rocker accessories, but someone is feeling boho chic, and someone else is feeling 80’s “get physical” lol we live in a time when you can always express yourself and in that way I think it’s almost easier to find your niche in this industry. Because it’s always about doing you. Do you feel society is programmed to dress a certain way? Why or why not? Of course, there are always going to be social norms and I’m always going to want to step outside of the box and push those boundaries. Im never going to be just a “tee shirt and shorts” kinda guy, so im just trying to present my point of view and see if I get any takers. Do you have another passion that you want to pursue? I’m living my dream right now, I just want to keep growing as a designer, as a stylist, and as a person. Most of us have a phrase or quote that we live by. Do you have one? If so what is it? “Long live the next collection” by Karl Lagerfeld. Lagerfeld has always been my idol and my constant source of inspiration. I’m all about looking at what is new, now, next. What can we expect from you as a designer in the future? Well I am always going to live my truth. Just like the world keeps turning my personal style will keep evolving. It’s hard to say what’s next. But just a heads up I’m seeing lots of print for the spring ;)
