Volume 51 - No. 24

Just when you think you’ve heard it all, archeologists – literally – dig up something totally shocking and unexpected in time for this year’s Father’s Day!

And not surprisingly, readers of The Paper are among the very first to read about it! It seems in every conceivable way, dads never cease to astound, shock, and amaze us – just ask Bruce Jenner. THE ORIGINS OF “FATHER’S DAY” KEEPS CHANGING! As

with good ol’ dad, the origins of Father’s Day seem to be getting older and older.

Less than a decade ago, Father’s Day was traced to the Middle Ages in Europe, giving it a pedigree that was well over 500 years old.

Then, just a few short years ago, science astounded the world again by stating that Father’s Day celebration roots were actually twice as old, reassessed at nearly 1,000 years deep into medieval times.

Then, in June of 2016, the science publication, Archeology, shocked the

entire world by announcing its discovery that Father’s Day was, once again, twice as old as previously thought – stating it was now 2,000 years old, with a genesis in Ancient Mesopotamia in Western Asia, where ancient clay tablets were unearthed, upon which words were chiseled, and deciphered from ancient cuneiform script.

It seemed apparent that the ‘expiration date’ on the true origins of Father’s Day was not aging gracefully like fine wine -- but rather curdling like milk – with a shorter and shorter ‘shelf life’ in our school and university history books!

Today, in 2021 – I can hear you snickering already in anticipation – the latest, most up-to-date theory is that good old Father’s Day is – yes, once again – twice as old as previously thought: not 2,000 years old . . . but at least 4,000 years old! The most recent 4,000-year-old discovery was made just 60 miles south of what is now present day Baghdad, Iraq (erstwhile Babylon).

The excavation site is near the Euphrates River and the handmade Father’s Day ‘card’ – once again chiseled on ancient clay tablets -- predates the birth of the historical Jesus by over

20 centuries and is carbon-dated as older than Egypt’s Great Pyramid of Giza by well over 1400 years! According to world news reports: “The shocking discovery of history’s oldest known remnant of a Father’s Day card in the form of an ancient clay tablet celebrating Fatherhood can now be (officially) traced back to such early civilizations as Babylon!” In 2021, over 70 different countries around the globe, including the United States, have chosen the 3rd Sunday of June to celebrate their versions of Father’s Day.

As with the difficulty of pin-pointing the true origins of Father’s Day, it also ain’t easy being a dad, especially as they, themselves, grow older. As 74-year-old dad, and former Late Night TV host, David Letterman, humorously confessed at a University lecture: “I knew when I was getting older as a dad when I was able to cough, fart, sneeze and pee all at the same time!” “THE FATHER OF OUR COUNTRY” GEORGE WASHINGTON WAS NEVER A FATHER!

A delicious bit of Father’s Day trivia – which is an almost unknown fact for many -- is that the celebrated “Father of Our Country,” George Washington, was never – in reality -- a biological father, rendering his nickname as highly amusing among American historians.

Give Us This Day Our Daily Chuckle This week, a compendium of wit, wisdom and neat stuff you can tell at parties. Enjoy!

Man calls 911 and says “I think my wife is dead”

The operator says how do you know? He says “The sex is the same but the ironing is building up!”

Page 2 • June 17, 2021

It is highly ironic that this is so, even though one may argue that he was a ‘father’ to the two children from his wife’s first marriage (the erstwhile Martha Custis). When Martha Custis became Martha Washington through marriage, George became stepfather to Martha’s two children from her previous husband, but to reiterate: the Father of Our Country was, ironically, never a biological father, himself! A recent historical study scrutinized details as to why George Washington was unable to impregnate his wife, Martha. Forensic studies and academicians all suggest that a type of tuberculosis which Washington contracted during childhood “May have rendered him sterile.”

Nonetheless, Mount Vernon was always filled with children for nearly 40 years of his marriage, including grandchildren.

His great consolation was that he played the real-life role as ‘father’ to all of them. 5 U. S. PRESIDENTS WHO WERE NEVER BIOLOGICAL FATHERS: 1. George Washington (possibly sterile). 2. James Polk (sterile) 3. Warren Harding (no children, despite 32 years of marriage). 4. James Buchanan (never married; many scholars assess him as our first ‘gay’ president). 5. Andrew Jackson (married, but no children).

Are You Concerned About Your Financial Future?

Looking for a Safe Haven for your money? Gold just might be your answer.

Yes, that precious metal known as gold is not only here to stay but has been forever . . . and will be with us forever . . . as a treasured part of your investment portfolio.

Precious metals make quality acquisitions because you can leverage them as a hedge against inflation, deflation and currency devaluation, reducing the volatility of your portfolio. It sounds simple, but is a fact that could make a substantial impact on your earned wealth. Before you turn to gold and silver or make any decisions about diversifying your portfolio, we want you to be fully educated about your acquisition options.

Investing in gold and silver can be easy, fun and profitable. Anyone can learn how to start buying gold and silver as a physical store of wealth. Because gold and silver hold its value, these precious metals are both a beautiful and solid longterm acquisition.

However, like any activity, the process of buying, selling and holding gold and silver involves certain nuances that are important to understand. For example, when you are armed with a baseline of knowledge about gold market trends, different ways to buy gold and silver, values of gold and silver coins and more, you will be a more informed investor. The types of precious metals that are most popular include gold, silver, platinum and palladium.

Precious metals have such value in so many different industries that they are traded regularly on the world’s commodities markets.

As investors continue the task of rebalancing their portfolios many wonder whether they should increase their physical holdings of gold and other precious metals. A dive into the gold price forecast will reveal that there are a lot of reasons to be bullish on the yellow metal. As important as the spot price is, many people lack a clear understanding of what it is and how it is

The Paper Cruisin’ Grand is Back!

Tomorrow, Friday, June 18th, is the day many area residents have been waiting for as Cruisin’ Grand returns to Escondido. Steve Waldron, founder and the Grand Guru of Cruisin’ Grand thinks it will be one of the largest turnouts ever, based on the telephone traffic he’s received as well as inquiries from family and friends.

For the first three weeks of Cruisin’ Grand Grand Avenue will be closed between Escondido Blvd. and Ivy; Maple, Kalmia and Juniper will be closed from Second to Valley Parkway. The scene will be similar to the Escondido Street Fair in that Grand Avenue will become, essentially, a pedestrian mall. It will be more of a static display and car show rather than the traditional cruising. Many of the cars will be displayed on side streets as well. She has worked with the building trades over the years both as an elected official as well as a chair of the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG_) and also as chair for the San Diego Region Partners for Home ownership.

She sees her primary mission as creating thousands of homes in the San Diego County community at all income levels, improving the supply of housing, and seeking to increase efficiency in the building process. Father’s Day Card Cont. from Page 2

In the opinion of some dads, the five presidents above are not to be pitied for not fathering children. Because, as some contemporary fathers humorously state with a measure of exasperation: “Insanity is inherited: you get it from your kids!” THE U. S. PRESIDENT WHO FATHERED THE MOST CHILDREN. Shocking, but true, our 10th U. S. President, John Tyler (1790-1862) had an astounding 15 biological children! And keep in mind, that was before Viagra!

Today’s generation of dads face new ferocious challenges, such as the daunting task of helping their kids with their homework such as algebra, chemistry, and physics. And if dad helps you on your homework assignments, don’t be surprised if you learn something new and different from your textbook, such as when dad explains that reason and logic separates us from the lower animals. And also, unlike dogs and cats, we’re not afraid of the vacuum cleaner.

It is totally unfair to expect dads to be perfect. They aren’t. When I was eleven I found this out when my Dad accidentally hung-up on Pastor Jones – only because our honorable church pastor was asthmatic and Dad mistook him for another obscene phone caller.

WHICH U. S. PRESIDENT MADE FATHER’S DAY AN OFFICIAL FEDERAL HOLIDAY? A. Calvin Coolidge. B. Lyndon Johnson. C. Richard Nixon.

Correct answer is “C” for Richard Nixon. Calvin Coolidge supported the idea but did not make any proclamation. Lyndon Johnson declared the 3rd Sunday in June as Father’s Day but it was not made a permanent federal holiday. It was President Richard M. Nixon who officially and formally declared it a holiday in 1972. Today, all dads come with various nicknames, such as “Pop” or “Daddy” or “ATM machine.” Mom especially sees daddy as an ATM machine.

research found: “As head of the household, today’s generation of fathers live in a ‘disposable’ world’-- a world of gadgets and appliances that the under 40s generation cannot fix because they just expect everything to ‘just work.’ Young fathers today just chuck out their faulty appliances and buy new ones.” On the heels of the research findings, one British commentator joked with a sentiment of truth: “Fathers back then were far more clever ‘fix-it-uppers’ and knew how to cut corners, financially. If it was too bloody expensive to fix the brakes on British motor cars, then the owner might very well suggest to the mechanic: ‘If I have bad brakes, then just make the horn louder!’”

SATIRICAL HUMOR OFTEN REVEALS THE DIFFERENT WORLDS OF YESTERYEAR’S DADS & TODAY’S. Unlike the dads of previous years, today’s generation of working dads know that a louder horn in his car may not be the answer to clearing rush hour traffic on even five-lane freeways. Famous political and social satirical commentator, Lewis Black, weighed-in on the BBC research study by stating that today’s generation of dads should not give up completely on the Depression-Era horn concept. “In today’s 2021 violent and insensitive world, a louder horn ain’t gonna do it,” says Black. “Go with the times. Instead of a louder horn, get a horn that sounds like gun shots! Today, that’ll clear up traffic pretty damned fast!” Sadly, such satirical humor does not stray far from the truth. ALL DADS TEACH US WISDOM & VALUABLE LESSONS IN LIFE. In many ways, dads are a lot smarter and wiser than King Solomon, himself. They dispense lessons in life, such as how to fight fair: “Always remain civil and fair-minded in sports and even in debates. And never fight dirty.”

But, then again, never underestimate dads -- because they know how to fight dirty if they have to. So, the “Never fight dirty” philosophy sometimes flies out the window.

WHO GIVES THE MOST FATHER’S DAY CARDS? A. Sons and daughters. B. Wives. C. Grandparents. Correct answer above is “A.” Sons and daughters give 50% of all Father’s Day cards. Wives give an estimated 20% of all total cards. And approximately 30% are given by grandparents, uncles, brothers, nieces, and other extended family members.

Famous Jewish comedian and real-life dad, Billy Crystal, gives fair warning that when pushed too far, dads can fight dirty, but in disguised ways: “My Dad never got along with a cantankerous, rude neighbor of ours named Mr. Goldman (real name) who made life miserable for everyone. But my Dad never showed his anger openly in fear of setting a bad example of overt hostility for us kids. But when Mr. Goldman’s little boy turned 4 years old, my Dad gave him a trumpet for a birthday present.

That’s because daddy knows he’s an ATM machine and where the money is really coming from.

Point being, dads know how to fight dirty if they have to. You just may not know it when they do.

All dads are modest enough to tell mom she shouldn’t really bother in picking out an expensive Father’s Day gift for him.

DEPRESSION-ERA DADS ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THAN MODERN DAY DADS. According to a recent BBC report, British researchers found that today’s generation of fathers – relatively speaking -- are unable to fix simple things like the older generation did. The English professor who headed the

“Odd thing was . . . Mr. Goldman was never known to be an early-riser. But that all changed at his little boy’s birthday party.”

ALL DADS HAVE ‘SURVIVAL SKILLS.’ By nature, all dads have keen survival skills. As Head of the Household, and protector of our families, here is a partial list of these skills.

HOSTAGE & NEGOTIATION SKILLS. Dads sometimes use this skill when negotiating with mom about the frequency of mothers-in-law visiting their house.

WARFARE & EVASIVE TACTICS. Like true Ninja warriors, all dads know how to disappear when it comes time to change diapers, help clean-up the house, attend Church services, and entertaining visiting mothers-in-law. Sometimes dads wear camouflage fatigues from their military unit so mom can’t find him.

SECRET SURVIVAL TRAINING MANUAL. All dads have a survival manual titled, “Crouching Father, Hidden Toddler: A Zen Guide for New Dads.” This military manual helps fathers learn the hidden strength of a Samurai Warrior in facing-down a Mt. Fuji-high pile of dirty diapers that more resembles a landfill. Also, when feeding the baby dads learn the Ninja-like instincts to know when a child will bite.

And the Buddha-like patience in case his instincts fail and he gets bitten anyway.

TWO GOLDEN RULES FOR ALL DADS. All dads have two unbreakable rules. 1. When dad is watching football on TV and mom happens to trip and fall down while carrying snacks for everyone, mom will have to wait until halftime before dad will leave the couch and help her up again. 2. Never tell dad to stop for directions if he should get lost in the car. Dads have their sense of pride. That’s why Moses wandered in the desert for over 40 years. Because he refused to stop and ask for directions. HOW ‘AGING DADS’ LEARN & ADAPT. 1. As dads get older, it becomes necessary for them to keep pulling their pants up higher and higher. Eventually, this may cause some concern because as dads continue to wear their pants higher every year, they must learn to avoid getting their chest hairs caught in their pants zipper. In time, dads might eventually resemble just a pair of pants with only his head on top. 2. Also, as dad gets older, his bladder and prostate get as large as a tuna boat, which means – through no fault of his own – dad pees a lot. Even if he doesn’t want to.

Regarding No. 2 above, popular comedian Larry the Cable Guy gives his own personal experience. “As all dads get older, their bladder begins bossing them around! For example, in the middle of the night I have to crawl out of a warm bed to pee. Over and over. One night I had to get up. Went to the bathroom. Then I stood there, like an idiot, just waiting – but without even a tinkle! With my hands on my hips, I just stared down at my plumbing, below. Running out of patience, and still looking down, I finally shouted out loud: “Damn it!! This was YOUR idea!!

“That’s when my wife called out from the bed: ‘Who are you talking to?’ And I shouted back: would remember!!”

“No one you

SUMMATION FOR FATHER’S DAY. Dads do not come with a manual. So they’re not always understood. But one thing is for certain: they are priceless and indispensable in our lives. And they often add sunshine to our lives with splashes of humor, because dads are naturally great storytellers.

Dads come in different sizes, shapes, and colors, but they’re all true Superheroes in our lives -- they just don’t wear a cape. They need to be loved and cherished.

Because they work, live, and devote their entire lives in providing and protecting us during our most vulnerable years. And even after we leave home.

They never stop being our dads.

When all is said and done, there is no cash register in the world that can ‘ring up’ dad – because he is priceless, and irreplaceable. The easiest thing in the world . . . is just to love dad. And he deserves that from everyone in the family.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads everywhere. You’re simply the best!

Dilemma in Treatment for Terminal Patients

Providing relief and dignity to terminally ill patients suffering from extreme pain can run into legal and bureaucratic roadblocks. SB 311 (Hueso), bipartisan legislation that recently passed the Senate, may help. SB 311, known as Ryan’s Law, is named for Ryan Bartell, a terminally ill patient in Seattle who found that he was often unconscious because of opioids prescribed by his doctors to deal with his pain. He wanted to spend his remaining time with his 9-year-old son and other family members, so his father had him transferred to a hospital that allowed cannabis use. Within a day, he was alert and relatively pain free. He spent his remaining weeks visiting with friends and family, not in drug-induced sleep.

Obviously, many terminally ill patients would prefer to remain awake during their last weeks, but there’s a problem. While California allows medicinal and recreational use of cannabis, many healthcare facilities rely on federal funding. Since cannabis is a Schedule 1 controlled substance under federal law, healthcare facilities allowing its use risk losing federal aid. SB 311 instructs the California Department of Public Health not to enforce prohibitions against cannabis

use by terminally ill patients. There is also some indication that federal authorities don’t intend to enforce these prohibitions either. Even so, similar legislation was vetoed by the Governor in 2019, who wrote that healthcare facilities “must comply with all federal laws in order to receive federal reimbursement… therefore, I begrudgingly veto this bill.” This puts hospitals at odds with federal law - and that can be a big problem. This bill could meet the same fate. I voted for SB 311 when it passed the Assembly Health Committee on June 8th. Final passage seems likely, but ultimately, the Governor and the federal government will make the final decision about compassionate use of medicinal cannabis by the terminally ill. Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

COVID-19 Relief

Last week, the Board of Supervisors voted to allocate over $600 million from the American Rescue Plan Act. These dollars, which have been distributed by the Federal Government, are intended for COVID-19 relief. The way I approached this: these are taxpayer dollars and I believe it should be given back to the people who were most impacted by the pandemic. As we all know, the past 15 months have been incredibly difficult, but my hope is these dollars will help San Diegans as we recover from the pandemic! While there were many different items, I wanted to highlight a few. The restaurant and special events industries have been some of the hardest hit over the last year. As we head towards a full reopening, I want to make sure we do all we can to help the recovery of these businesses. The Board of Supervisors voted to waive County fees for both restaurants and special events. The cost for these fees is about $9 million in total but will be paid for with the ARPA dollars.

Kids have suffered greatly over the last year, from virtually learning to not being able to play the sports

they love. Youth sports participation is down in San Diego County, and I don’t want money to be the reason. Through my action, the Board made the decision to allocate $2 million towards a grant program for youth sports and youth camp tuitions.

As more San Diegans head back to their jobs, many children are still participating in school under a hybrid model. This leaves a huge need for access to childcare. The Board voted to allocate $16 million to provide vouchers to families in need, grants to childcare providers, and investments in childcare facilities.

There were many other important causes that we were able to fund, which you can read about on the County website. This was an extremely important day at the Board and I’m hopeful it will jumpstart our road to recovery! To contact North County Office – by appointment only 325 S. PROBLEM SOLVED BY CHRISTOPHER ELLIOTT

Q: I recently called an Uber for a ride home. Usually, it costs $42, but Uber charged me $127. How can they triple the cost?

This is a rip-off. I've always paid $42, give or take a few dollars. Can you explain why I was charged two different prices for the same amount of miles? -- Jillian Desmarais, Lakeland, Fla.

A: That sounds like a rip-off to me, too. But is it? Charging extra based on demand is called "surge" pricing. In cases of "very high" demand, Uber says prices may increase to help ensure that those who need a ride can get one. According to the rideshare service, surge pricing lets the Uber app "continue to be a reliable choice."

But it does so much more than that. This type of dynamic pricing may also be the future of rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft. As demand for rides increases, so do prices. That's one reason why Uber is valued at $100 billion. You can avoid surge pricing (or "prime time" pricing on Lyft) with a few easy tricks. The app normally alerts you to the price increase. If surge pricing applies in your city when demand increases in a specific area, that neighborhood will change color, according to Uber. The colored areas of the map will range from light orange to dark red. Light orange areas represent smaller earning opportunities from surge, while dark red areas indicate larger ones, the company says. You can wait a while until demand goes down and then try again. Another popular trick: Move. If you walk or take public transportation to another part of town, you may be able to avoid surge pricing and your rates will return to normal.

Some areas are more prone to this type of pricing. A busy city center or a conference hotel at the end of a big event might be susceptible to higher fares. An area with less demand, like a quiet suburb, might never experience surge pricing. Remember, you always have choices. If Uber is giving you a $127 rate, you can always download Lyft and try it. And if Lyft goes all prime time on you, you can switch back to Uber. Don't forget taxis (yes, they still exist) and mass transit. But the bottom line is: You have options. You should never feel that accepting an inflated price quote is your only choice.

If you feel you've been overcharged, you can also reach out to < a href="https://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/uber/">one of these Uber customer service managers</a>. I list their names, numbers and email addresses on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org.

TRAVEL TROUBLESHOOTER

Is my annual insurance policy refundable?

After the pandemic hits, Durndord King can't use his annual travel insurance policy from Allianz. Is it refundable?

Q: Before the pandemic, I paid $1,025 for an annual travel insurance policy through Allianz for my wife and me. She's in her 70s, and I'm in my 80s. Then COVID-19 came along, and we had to cancel everything we planned to do in Europe. So our policy became useless.

I asked Allianz if we could transfer our policy to next year when travel appears to be coming back. The company offered a 90-day extension, but it's clear that there will be no travel for us during those 90 days. I'd like your help to either get a refund for the useless travel insurance or have the policy extended for another year when it appears we will actually be able to make use of it. -- Durndord King, Santa Monica, Calif. A: I'm sorry you had to cancel your trip to Europe. You would think that your travel insurance would be refundable, but it usually isn't.

Allianz travel insurance plans offer coverage for any trips that are more than 100 miles from your home and occur during the policy’s effective period. So it would have also applied to your trips within the U.S. to visit friends and family during the summer and holidays. If you want to cancel your annual travel insurance, you can do so for any reason and receive a prorated premium refund.

It appears you asked for an extension of your policy. Allianz was offering extensions during the pandemic on a case-by-case basis, so it offered you an extra 90 days of coverage. But you told an Allianz representative you couldn't use the extra 90 days, which is totally understandable. Travel insurance companies have some flexibility when it comes to requests like yours. You could have appealed to Allianz online (I recommend a written appeal with any documentation). You could have also appealed <a href="https://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/allianz/">to an executive at Allianz</a>. I list their names, numbers and email address-

The Queen Of The ‘Algonquin Round Table’

One of America’s greatest writers and poets known for her wit, sardonic, and satirical wisecracks was Dorothy Rothschild Parker. Known to most of her friends and admirers as “Miss Parker,” she was born Aug. 22, 1893, and was a founding member of the Hotel Algonquin’s “Round Table.”

In 1917, she met and married Edwin Pond Parker II, but they were soon separated by his World War II service. She had ambivalent feelings about her Jewish heritage and later joked that she married to escape her name.

Parker's career took off in 1918, while she was writing theatre criticism for Vanity Fair. At the magazine, she met Robert Benchley and Robert E. Sherwood. The trio began lunching at the Algonquin Hotel on a near-daily basis and became founding members of what became known as the “Algonquin Round Table.” Parker began developing a national reputation as a wit. Here’s an example of her dry sense of humor: When she heard of the passing of famously “silent” former president Calvin Coolidge, Parker remarked, "How could they tell?" Parker became noted for her short, viciously humorous poems, many highlighting ludicrous aspects of her many (largely unsuccessful) romantic affairs. Some of Parker's most popular work was published in The New Yorker in the form of acerbic book reviews under the byline "Constant Reader." Her response to the whimsy of A. A. Milne's “The House at Pooh Corner” was "Tonstant Weader fwowed up.”

She had a number of affairs; her lovers including reporter-turned-playwright Charles MacArthur (who later was married to actress Helen Hayes). That relationship resulted in a pregnancy. Parker is alleged to have said, "… how like me to put all my eggs into one bastard.” In 1932, Parker met Alan Campbell, whom she married two years later. They moved to Hollywood and would eventually earn $2,000 per week, and in some instances upwards of $5,000 per week as freelancers for various studios. She and Campbell worked on

more than 15 films.

With Campbell and Robert Carson, Parker wrote the script for the 1937 Academy Award-winning film “A Star Is Born,” starring Fredric March and Janet Gaynor. The team was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Writing of a Screenplay. Parker wrote additional dialogue for “The Little Foxes” in 1941, starring Bette Davis. She received a nomination for an Oscar for the screenplay of “Smash-Up, the Story of a Woman” (1947), starring Susan Hayward.

During the Great Depression, Parker was among numerous American intellectuals and artists who became involved in related social movements. In 1937, she was a reporter for the Loyalist cause in Spain in the Communist magazine, The New Masses. Parker helped to found the Hollywood Anti-Nazi League in 1936, which the FBI suspected of being a Communist Party front. The Hollywood Anti-Nazi League's membership eventually grew to some 4,000 strong, later becoming a target for the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC).

The FBI compiled a 1,000-page dossier on Parker because of her suspected involvement in communism during the early fifties when Senator Joseph McCarthy, R-Wisconsin) was raising alarms about communists in government and Hollywood. As a result, movie studio bosses placed her on the Hollywood blacklist. Her final screenplay was “The Fan,” a 1949 adaptation of Oscar Wilde's “Lady Windermere's Fan,” directed by Otto Preminger. Back in New York, Parker occasionally participated in radio programs, including “Information Please.” Both Ilka Chase and Tallulah Bankhead used her material for radio monologues.

Parker died on June 7, 1967, of a heart attack at the age of 73. Her executor, author and friend was Lillian Hellman, but her ashes remained unclaimed in her attorney Paul O' Dwyer's filing cabinet for 17 years.

Parker would have had some great observations about life in 2019. “You can lead a horticulture, but you can't make her think.” “Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone.” “The two most beautiful words in the English language are 'cheque enclosed.'" “One more drink and I’ll be under the host.” “I’d rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.” “I require three things in a man: he must be handsome, ruthless, and stupid.” “To cut on my tombstone: ‘Wherever she went, including here, it was against her better judgment.’” And, an example of her poetry: “By the time you swear you’re his, Shivering and sighing, And he vows his passion is Infinite, undying Lady, make a note of this: One of you is lying." “Excuse my dust” for her epitaph -and it was.

The sheriff and his men entered the smoking mess but could find no remains of anyone.

They spotted the farmer plowing a field not too far away as if nothing had happened. They hurried over to the man's tractor. "Hank," the sheriff yelled, panting and out of breath, "Did you see this terrible accident happen?" "Yep. Sure did," the farmer mumbled unconcerned, cutting off the tractor's engine.

"Do you realize that is Air Force One, the airplane of the President of the United States ?" "Yep."

"Were there any survivors?"

"Nope. They's all kilt straight out," the farmer answered. "I done buried them all myself. Took me most of the morning." "President Biden is dead?" the sheriff asked.

"Well," the farmer grumbled, restarting his tractor. "He kept asaying he wasn't... but you know how bad that sumbitch lies." •••• The Brothel Parrot ...

A woman went to a pet shop & immediately spotted a large, beautiful parrot. There was a sign on the cage that said $50.00. 'Why so little,' she asked the pet store owner. The owner looked at her and said, 'Look, I should tell you first that this bird used to live in a house of Prostitution and sometimes it says some pretty vulgar stuff.'

The woman thought about this, but decided she had to have the bird any way. She took it home and hung the bird's cage up in her living room and waited for it to say something. The bird looked around the room, then at her, and said, 'New house, new madam.' The woman was a bit shocked at the implication, but then thought 'that's really not so bad.'

When her 2 teenage daughters returned from school the bird saw and said, 'New house, new madam, new girls.' The girls and the woman were a bit offended, but then began to laugh about the situation, considering how and where the parrot had been raised. Moments later, the woman's husband came home from work. The bird looked at him and said, 'Hi Keith.'

Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara Greetings Escondido,

I think most people know this but just in case, June is LGBTQ Pride month. Its genesis comes from the Stonewall riots in NYC in 1969. Today, I would ask you to consider a few thoughts about differences.

I’ll start with paraphrasing a minister friend of mine who said that we all know the words that separate us, and we all know the words that bring us together. It is up to us to decide which words we use. I think we should use the words that bring us together as a community. There are no shortages of differences among us. What do we gain by picking some and not others to be tribal about? We gain nothing. We create discord, that has the consequence of stripping our fellow human beings of their dignity and rights. That is not who we are as Americans.

The settlers who came here were people who were different. Their actions eventually created a country that committed to tolerance, equality, and respect. And while we are still on that journey, we should always remember what we are trying to achieve and that it will take work. So, during this month, I would ask you to recommit to our nation’s promise of equality. And for those of you who are persons of faith, remember we are all God’s children. Stay informed, Be Kind, Remember your neighbor, and Stay safe! Semper Fi, Mac Paul P. McNamaraMayor of Escondido pmcnamara@escondido.org

How Conner is saving the planet and America too

Well perhaps not all by himself but he is helping us do our share. Conner Bagheri came to us as an intern in 2020 and became a parttime employee this spring. Conner processes trade-in and “enterprise refurbs” by taking them through the same process as new PC builds. We install storage devices, RAM, load Windows10, then system test the entire computer. Conner also disassembles and separates computer components for salvage. Sheet metal, hard drives, mother boards, power supplies, heat sinks are donated to a local non-profit. RAM and CPUs are sent to foundries for

These efforts are important to the health of our planet and our American economy for several reasons. Every computer returned to active use eliminates the need for a new PC. Using existing materials instead of employing the energy and resources to mine and process new raw materials benefits the environment. Refurbishing and repurposing existing computers also keeps jobs and revenue in America. 70% of the worlds new PCs are Lenovo, HP and Dell and the vast majority of money spent on those computers goes directly to China.

There are good reasons to consider buying a new car. Every car has thousands of moving parts that wear. Eventually replacing those parts will exceed the cost of a new car. New car technology brings new comfort and safety features. Things like, fuel economy, GPS mapping, back-up cameras, proximity monitors, autobraking, safety alarms and rear seat entertainment are attractive and practical. Even if they don’t go any faster, new car features offer significant benefits. With computers it’s a different story for the majority of users. New PCs don’t go faster, last longer or have new features. We use our home, business and school computers mainly as an Internet connection tool. The fastest Internet and download speeds are easily handled by even a ten year old PC. Off-line tasks like office suites, inventory manage-

The Appraiser’s Corner The Typewriter

Anyone, who can remember, before the time that the Internet existed might recall names such as Royal, Remington, and Underwood. Throw in IBM as well, and you might catch on to the machine I am thinking about.

The typewriter. Yes, to all the young people today there was an instrument called the typewriter. I can tell you firsthand that authors who did not write longhand used a typewriter. At first there were only manual machines, then they were electric. To have an IBM Selectric was state of the art.

But who came up with the brilliant idea to begin with? Actually, the machine is not as old as you might think.

In 1714 an Englishman Henry Mill applied for a patent for a “machine or method for the impressing or transcribing of letters singly or progressively one after another”. Evidently, nothing ever materialized from the patent, because the first typewriting machine that was said to have worked was built in 1808 by the Italian Pellegrino Turri for a blind friend. Numerous inventors attempted to perfect the machine in the 19th century, including a Danish pastor

Rasmus Malling-Hansen’s “writing ball”. In the U.S. the first typewriter was manufactured by Sholes & Glidden in 1874. This typewriter typed only in capital letters, but did introduce the QWERTY keyboard, which is still used today.

The Sholes & Glidden typewriter was only minimally successful, but was followed by the Remington. The Remington soon became dominant in the field. Soon thereafter the Underwood became prominent as well. Its most popular model was the Underwood #5, which was produced by the millions, and used in businesses, and some homes, across the U.S., and the world. Typewriters, no matter the model, looked similar, with the QWERTY keyboard, the one shift key, the four banks of keys, the frontstroke, and the ribbon. As with most new machines when they are first introduced, the costs are generally much higher than what they are later. Such was the case with the typewriter, which sold for approximately $100 in the 19th century. Taking into account inflation, that was a tremendous amount of money. Of course, the machine was a novelty at the time, and served a useful function. The wealthy were willing to pay for the new machine, and of course, be one of the first to ever use it. Times never change.

ment, tax, financial, photo editing and ancestry tracing are handled in real time by older computers. With Windows10 installed, an old PC can do everything a new one does without any compromise. Ageing and wear are not a problem with computers because, unlike cars, they have no moving parts to wear out. The only moving part on a PC with an SSD is a five dollar fan. Since “refurb” PCs can do everything new ones can, and they don’t wear out, why would anyone buy a new PC? Power users do. With applications like high-end gaming, crypto currency mining, solids modeling, simulation technology, video and graphics editing these users do benefit from the latest and greatest in storage, RAM, CPU and video technology. With justification they are willing to spend thousands of dollars for the latest technology required to

manage their tasks effectively. But for you and I “refurbs” are far more cost effective and practical.

Businesses, schools and governments don’t purchase “retail” Lenovo, HP and Dell PCs as sold in the Big Box stores. As professionals they understand difference in quality and reliability between “retail” and “enterprise” PCs. Lenovo, HP and Dell “Enterprise” PCs are twice the price and triple the warranty period as compared to their “Retail” cousins “made cheap to price compete.”

Last week we helped Conner select a handful of Computer Factory PCs from among this Spring’s trade-ins. Restored with new SSDs, Windows10 and upgraded components. “Conner’s Classics” are fast, quiet computers with cool retro cases and full year warranty.

Connor’s Classics - From $150 to $290 Naturally, prices became lower as typewriters were mass produced. Soon they were affordable for the average business and family. As an aside note, trivia buffs will be interested in knowing that the first electric typewriter was the Blickensderfer. Also, George Anderson of Memphis patented the typewriter ribbon in 1886. And Pellegrino Turri, who manufactured the first useable typewriter in 1784, also invented carbon paper in 1808. Collectors, too, have not missed out on typewriters. Sometimes they even use the machines that they buy at auction.

In 2013, an IBM electric typewriter was sold at a Heritage Auction for $3250. That would seem like a lot of money for an electric typewriter from the 1960s, except for one small detail. The typewriter was owned by Elvis Presley. As mentioned, many authors typed their books. The Underwood manual (portable) typewriter that Tennessee Williams used for Summer and Smoke, as well as for Cat on a Hat Tin Roof, was auctioned for nearly $4500. The Smith-Corona electric typewriter, from the 1970s that was used by Orson Welles went for over $9000. However, one of the most famous typewriters was sold at auction for $12,000. Needless to say it has to be

a high-profile person, and it certainly was. It was the Royal Quiet Deluxe typewriter used by none other than the famed journalist Edward R. Murrow. In fact, attached to the typewriter itself is a plaque which read “For Outstanding service in reporting the first year of the Second World War for the American people”. There is also a picture of Murrow with the typewriter. What great provenance! By the way, the first author to submit a typewriter manuscript to his publisher was Mark Twain.

And Still More . . .

Tom Morrow is a seasoned reporter! No wonder he was an editor and head writer for the North County Blade-Citizen and a favorite columnist with the North County Times for years! The man is a Walter Cronkite of modern reporting and commentary! And a man who has known many of Hollywood's greatest icons in history and has shared those experiences with us! -Huge, huge Tom Morrow fans from the Maria Contreras family/friends, Escondido, San Marcos. A Bit of Sarcasm?

Hooray - Hooray. Ever Lopez walked out of Asheboro High School N.C with his diploma; probably with a smirk on his face.

What a load of Hog-Wash. This young lad thought he would make a statement to his peers by draping a Mexican flag over his shoulder for the lame excuse. “I did it out of pride for my Mexican roots.” On top of that the ignorant masses came out the woodwork to offer death threats to the Principal. I think a public flogging for this lad would have been more appropriate.

By the way, I have the same annual policy that you do. It makes a lot of sense for travelers who take multiple trips in a year. Unfortunately, the time for a prorated refund had already passed by the time you contacted me, and a 90day extension wouldn't have been useful. The terms of your travel insurance purchase were clear, but you were asking the company to bend a rule during a pandemic. I think that was a fair request. I contacted Allianz on your behalf. A representative said that as a "onetime consideration" it would refund your plan in full. Christopher Elliott's latest book is “How To Be The World’s Smartest Traveler” (National Geographic). NOTICE OF PUBLIC WORKSHOP (Administrative)

PROJECT: Ordinance Update-Permit Streamlining, TA21-0001 Date and Time: June 29, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. BACKGROUND: As part of the Planning Division’s ongoing discipline of looking to incorporate process improvements into day-to-day planning activities, staff recognized that certain permits, regulations and procedures can be updated to streamline the review processes of certain business types to foster economic development in the City and to better manage the Planning Division’s resources in an efficient manner. The evaluation of the City’s processing and zoning permit requirements found that a number of land use types, because of their inherent characteristics, have either low potential for impacts or can be limited in size, scope, or setting to eliminate potential impacts to surrounding properties. The evaluation determined that for a number of these types of uses, permit applications can be processed and permitted by a ministerial “Zoning Approval (ZA)” process rather than by the more burdensome discretionary process thereby simplifying and expediting permit approvals. Further is was determined that some uses requiring Conditional Use Permits, and Directors Permit could be down-tiered and effectively processed as a Directors Permit or permitted by right and still maintain proper land use oversight. The Zoning Ordinance is therefore proposed to be updated to implement the identified changes. The City will be hosting a virtual workshop to engage City residents, businesses, and other stakeholders in the Ordinance update process. This workshop will provide an opportunity to ask questions, learn more about the Ordinance update, and to provide input and feedback on its development. The City will incorporate input from the workshop in the Ordinance update to reflect the values and vision of the community. Please join us at the upcoming workshop virtually via GoToMeeting. You can join the meeting from your computer, tablet or smartphone. https://global.gotomeeting.co m/join/367523821 You can also dial in using your phone. United States (Toll Free): 1-877-309-2073 and use Access Code: 367-523821.
