When we talk about the Golden Thread in fire safety, we refer to the information on how a building is designed, managed and operated as well as how the management of that information remains accurate, accessible and up-to-date. As your contractor of choice, you will have the ability to access the software that we use during and after the completion of work so that you can maintain an accurate record of building safety data in line with the latest building and safety regulations.
Using an innovative software solution such as Bolster, all records and documentation are stored on the cloud based system giving you full visibility of the project from inception through to completion. Working through a mobile app, our FIRAS certified management team can upload reports, layout drawings, materials used and much, much more. After closing a job, a unique reference number is issued along with a compliance report encompassing a fully transparent audit trail including dates and time stamps, so you receive full traceability for each action taken.
In addition, all information is automatically uploaded to a cloud database for future use and evidence provision which you will have access to.
The system can be used for:
Passive
Fire
Fire
Smoke
Sprinkler Systems
After works are inspected, layout drawings are uploaded via a tablet or smartphone. Any compartment breaches are added to the drawings using a simple pin and up to 10 photographs showing its location.
The numbered pins show whether work is required, in progress or completed and location labels are printed using specially coded mobile printers.
Next, information regarding any required remedial work is recorded and all information is uploaded to a cloud database. Once the survey is complete, a report detailing all findings will be issued to you.
Finally, the app creates a robust management system providing our customers with peace of mind that fire compliance can not only be achieved but also maintained and documented to satisfy fire service enforcement officers, building control and external auditors as well as the golden thread of information.
From 2017, we have worked alongside Southampton City Council on a £45m project to upgrade their current passive fire protection across 17 high rise blocks, medium and low-rise properties, and managed accommodation within the city.
The project includes all fire protection works including the replacement of fire doors to flats and communal areas, compartmentation works and the installation of sprinkler and fire detection systems.
To complete the works, we utilise 45 directly employed trained technicians as well as specialist contractors. By phasing out the works across the sites we have been able to minimise disruption to residents. To date we have installed over 7,500 fire new doors, installed 14 Sprinkler Systems, and completed over 50,000 compartmentation seals, the works have also involved extensive enabling works such as asbestos removal and building upgrades and repairs.
With our innovative phasing of the works to minimise disruption, we are awarded runner up for the ‘Best Customer Impact’ award at the National Housing Maintenance Forum (NHMF).
In 2020, CLC also successfully tendered for passive fire protection works to all low and medium rise buildings across Southampton City Council’s housing stock. After successfully completing the first 3-year term to the delight of SCC and its residents, the contract has been extended to August 2024.
As part of the project, we are also undertaking remedial works to fire doors and passive fire compartmentation following inspection, in the first six months of this project we have completed 8,000 actions.
Southampton City Council are delighted with the positive and proactive manner in which CLC has worked to deliver this challenging project, working with all stakeholders, and ensuring minimum disruption to our residents.
- Southampton City Council spokesman
In 2020, we embarked on a pilot scheme to provide Passive Fire Protection works to NHS Property Services to Sheltered Accommodation and General NHS Buildings across the West Midlands. The success of the pilot scheme has since resulted in further works which are due to conclude in 2025.
The safety of staff and patients is paramount to the NHS and so the main scope of work involves upgrading and maintaining the fire safety of NHS buildings. Works include penetration sealing, cavity barriers, fire compartmentation including loft voids, cross corridor door voids, replacement intumescent strips, fire door maintenance, replacement fire doors and fire safety signage on public buildings including occupied hospitals, medical centres, doctor’s surgeries, and NHS administration buildings.
There is a particular need for transparency for public spending, and so to keep work within a strict budget, we strive to carry out work during normal working hours and keep out of hours working to a minimum. Our teams work closely with the estates team and hospital staff to segregate working areas and ensure our works have little to no impact on the day-to-day operation of the hospital. On site, works are controlled through daily site checks from the Site Manager and quality and compliance are checked in line with our internal governance processes. From mobilisation through to handover, we engage with the estates team and NHS staff so that we can proactively work together to complete the work as quickly and diligently as possible.
It is a pleasure to work alongside CLC on our Fire Compartmentation Project. We appreciate the knowledge and expertise that they provide us on each project and collaboration with them is effortless, making them feel like extended colleagues rather than contractors. The work is completed seamlessly in a live environment, with thorough care and consideration given at all times to building users.
