A Bit About Us
Leveraging Collaboration, Both in Industry and Community Thorlabs has always been enthusiastic about collaborating with the scientific community. In 1998, we developed a Strategic Partnership Program aimed at forming collaborations with researchers and organizations that facilitate the adoption of new ideas, technologies, and experimental techniques. Currently, we have six such partnerships. Similarly, since they are in close proximity to some of the world’s leading research campuses, our team in Ely, United Kingdom has also benefitted from collaborations and discussions with nearby scientists. Just as they have worked hard to leverage these partnerships to produce the innovative products featured on these pages, Thorlabs employees in Ely have also forged strong ties elsewhere in the community. For several years, members of our Ely office have participated in the raft race of Ely Aquafest, a community event organized by the local rotary club, and sponsored in part by Thorlabs, with all proceeds benefitting local charities and causes. To that end, the Thorlabs Ely racing team first purchased a raft that was no longer being used and then built their own from scratch, modeling it after the first. The two rafts were outfitted with Thorlabs logos, racing numbers, and four Ely employees each, and then set out on the River Great Ouse for a half mile rowing frenzy. Thorlabs reigned victorious in the 2014 river raft race, capturing 1st and 2nd place finishes, with recordbreaking 7 minute and respectable 9 minute race times, respectively.

In addition to their rafting adventures, the Ely team has also joined the community in fundraising through fun and engaging activities for a variety of other causes. These include the British Heart Foundation, the Addenbrooke’s Children’s Hospital, and a variety of organizations supporting cancer research.

Tabletop
Shelves span the width of the frame and are supported by stainless steel posts, which allow for height adjustment. Two shelves can be mounted on one set of posts.
Our Nexus™ tabletops provide excellent damping, thermal stability, and rigidity. We offer a range of sizes to accommodate a variety of microscope systems.
Instrument Shelf
Sample Prep Shelf
These smaller shelves provide extra space above the tabletop. They are installed without removing any other components.
Shelves rest on the upper rails of the frame creating a movable workspace.
Monitor Mount Articulating arm supports most types of flat screen monitors.
Side Shelf Shelves mount to the upper or lower side rails of the frame, providing extra space to the side of the tabletop.
Computer Shelf Specialized shelf conveniently holds a computer tower.
Keyboard Holder
Breadboard Mounting Brackets
Frame-mounted keyboard and mouse holder rotates 360°, allowing it to be ergonomically positioned.
Used to attach breadboards to the ScienceDesk Frame.
Tool Caddy and Magnetic Storage Tray
Heavy-Duty Casters Casters allow movement of the workstation within the lab. Leveling feet can be adjusted once the desk is in the desired location.
Tool Caddy for general storage and benchtop organizers. Storage Tray holds small tools, cap screws, and other fasteners securely. Attaches to any magnetic surface.
ScienceDesk Frame Specialized frame fully encloses the tabletop, protecting it from accidental movement and allowing placement of accessories. Two heights are available, allowing the user to sit or stand. We offer active ScienceDesk frames on the following pages. Rigid and passive frames are available online.
Under Shelf Adjustable Wrist Rest
19" Rack Chassis and Drawer
Designed to provide the optimal height and angle for delicate instrument adjustments on the tabletop.
ScienceDesksTM are high-quality ergonomic workstations with a modular system of optional accessories, making them ideal for use in imaging applications. The active-air, anti-vibration frame melds form and function to produce a portable industry-leading vibration isolation workstation. The tabletop is inset within the frame, protecting it from any incidental contact that may occur when working in a lab environment. Thorlabs offers a variety of stainless steel tabletops, with or without regularly spaced mounting holes, designed for use with our ScienceDesk frames. The honeycomb design and 5 mm thick top and bottom steel plates provide a durable and rigid working surface that will quickly damp vibrations created on the tabletop. The upper and lower rails of the ScienceDesk can be used to strategically place shelves and other accessories around an imaging system. This allows supporting equipment to be in close proximity to the isolated working surface without being on it.

This removable shelf is included with the table frame. It spans the entire length and half the width of the workstation, making it ideal for storing large power supplies or control modules.
Thorlabs’ Optical Table Workstations are high-quality, modular systems available with an array of ergonomic accessories, making them ideal for use in any demanding imaging application. Each frame is self-leveling with active-air vibration isolators for isolating a system from detrimental effects caused by vibrations in the lab. These workstations are available with heights of 23.6" (600 mm) or 27.5" (700 mm) for use with our 12.2" (310 mm) or 8.3" (210 mm) thick optical tables, respectively. This maintains a constant working surface height of 36" (910 mm) regardless of the thickness of table chosen. For these workstations, a Nexus™ Optical Table is paired with the active isolation table frame, creating a system that is ideal for any imaging application requiring sub-micron resolution. The tabletop features all-steel construction, excellent thermal stability, and broadband damping. The tables provide durable, rigid, working surfaces that will quickly damp vibrations created on the tabletop. With the addition of lean bars (shown above), various shelving options and accessories can be strategically placed around an imaging system. This allows supporting equipment to be in close proximity to the isolated working surface without being on it. A complete system with numerous accessories is shown above. Typical Applications Thorlabs’ Optical Table Workstations are the ideal support solution for any of Thorlabs’ Multiphoton Microscopes (see pages 2 - 35). The active, self-leveling vibration isolation system will dampen the worst vibrations created in the lab, while our stainless steel Nexus Optical Table has a rigid interior honeycomb structure that will quickly damp any vibrations created on the table surface, protecting sensitive equipment and setups. The modular design of the frame allows you to place supporting shelves, computers, power strips, light strips, or drawers around or on the work area for easy access to equipment or tools. An under table shelf, which is included with the frame, is ideal for holding large power supplies or supporting equipment. It will keep them out of the way but within reach, while also keeping them elevated off of the ground.

Thorlabs’ Optical Tables are the Ideal Choice for Isolating Our Bergamo II Series of Multiphoton Microscopes (See Page 2) from Sources of Vibrations in the Lab
Optical Table Workstations Optical Tables Tabletop Isolation
A complete optical table setup from Thorlabs is purchased as two separate components: the tabletop, referred to as the optical table, and supports. The supports are available with heights of 23.6" (600 mm) or 27.5" (700 mm) for use with our 12.2" (310 mm) or 8.3" (210 mm) thick optical tables, respectively. This maintains a constant working surface height of 36" (910 mm) regardless of the thickness of table chosen. Each support is self-leveling with active vibration isolation supports, which provide the highest level of vibration damping available. An air compressor is required for use with active isolation supports.

Thorlabs’ Free-Standing Instrumentation Shelves provide storage space or further mounting surfaces for instruments, power supplies, and other accessories. As a free-standing unit, the operation of the table’s vibration isolation system is not affected. Shelves are available for compatibility with 2.0 m (6.5') or 2.5 m (8.2') long optical tables. The shelf units can be used with either our optical tables (See Pages 378 379) or our optical table workstations (See Pages 368 - 377). Each system comes with two 598 mm (23.5") wide Melamine-faced MDF shelves that can each support up to 135.0 kg (297 lbs).

The PWA090 electronic, self-leveling, vibration isolation system provides a portable, lightweight, low-profile, vibration-control solution for sensitive benchtop equipment and experiments. The system consists of four pneumatic isolators that must be connected to a constant supply of air, either from an air compressor (see next page) or bottled air supply, and an electronic control box with keypad. Other isolator quantities are available upon request.
PWA090 Being Used to Isolate and Actively Level a Nexus Breadboard and Microscope System
This electronic sensing system removes the need for the mechanical linkage between the valve and the breadboard found on traditional systems and results in more efficient isolation. Manual adjustment of the level/height is achieved via a keypad. Once set up, the level is maintained and any further disturbances are corrected automatically. These miniature electronic isolation mounts are only 110 mm (4.33") in diameter and 71 mm (2.8") high, making them ideal for use with breadboards and small optical tables. The IsoPlate benchtop passive vibration-isolation system provides portability Âfor small-scale experiments, demonstrations, and vibration-sensitive instrumentation. The tabletop (available separately) sits on four rubber pads. The pneumatic system has four inflated cushions, of which two have a coupled
air reservoir and the remaining two are independently inflated. This arrangement provides stable, three-point dynamics to the system. Air suspension is achieved via three valves on the front panel, which can be inflated by our PTA127 foot pump sold below.
